    Summary

After years of believing he was going to be alone forever, Ryland Grace is informed of a spacecraft drifting near Erid. The survivor he pulls aboard is Simon: younger, scarred, broad-shouldered, and carrying enough religious trauma to fill a spaceship. As recovery turns into late-night conversations, shared nightmares, and one very crowded bed, two men who have both been starved of human touch begin to realize that survival is easier when someone is there to reach back.

    or

Ryland Grace rescues a human he thought he’d never find. Simon is wounded, haunted, and convinced he doesn’t deserve saving. Ryland disagrees.

    Summary

He’s in heaven. If nothing else, he’s now certain that he’s in heaven because there’s an angel in his sights, separated by glass, presumably so that Simon wouldn’t infect him with his humanity. The angel is the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen: eyes as blue as what he imagined ice to look like, hair as yellow as a cornfield. Lips...the angel’s lips look to be as soft as the leaf he’d stolen from the tree of Eden, when he was but a child.

The angel’s stare is fixed on Simon, and he realises that this must be a test from God, because Simon is undeserving of the attention of a being as lovely as the one in front of him. The one looking at him as if he were the miracle.

Simon sleeps and dreams of rough, tanned hands with no red beneath the fingernails. They caress his face, soft and gentle, travelling up to his hair and suddenly he’s underwater, breathing in blood, dying as angels sing beneath the surface, their crooked smiles bringing him peace.

or, simon shows up on erid, vomits up blood, and grace fucks w it big time

    Summary

"The man in the airlock was too conscious.
Well, “man” might not be accurate, Ryland Grace thought as he tried to ignore the screams, his fingers shaking over the keyboards as erratically as his gaze jittering between readout screens. Big red letters announcing “DANGEROUS CONTAMINATION” flashed on half of them. He chanced another look through the tiny airlock window, where the humanoid covered in a red, blood-like substance rolled around on the floor writhing in pain. He hadn’t been writhing when they found him: he hadn’t been anything when they picked up the abnormal shape drifting in the Patrova line on their way to Erid."

Ryland Grace has never been great at making friends. Now that he has a mutated, traumatized, and possibly insane man in the Hail Mary's quarantine room, he wishes he would have practiced more. Rocky wishes they'd ejected the monster out of the airlock.

    Summary

During their journey back to Erid, Grace and Rocky find themselves in a starless void. At first they assume there must be a scientific explanation, but when they find a man welded into a submarine they realize things are far worse than they imagined.

    ---

Grace wakes to the sound of Mary and Rocky talking over each other. Blinking away the haze of sleep, Grace groans as he tries to focus on understanding what the heck is going on. Given Rocky’s voice is both closer and louder, his brain parses what he’s saying first.

“Grace, what’s that mean, question? What’s going on, question?”

Ok, not the most helpful. Sitting up, sleep properly leaves Grace’s mind as he listens to the message on the overhead.

“Forward star detection, lost. Aft star detection, lost. Starboard star detection, lost. Port star detection, lost. Ventral star detection, lost. Dorsal star detection, lost. Autopilot offline.” Mary says, repeating the message.

The exterior cameras on the Hail Mary use the positions of the stars around it to calculate it’s own position. That’s how the autopilot knows when to make course corrections.
