Summary
Sitting on the floor beneath her feet Tim Drake listens to his mère sing their shared families prestigious history. Her voice rings with echoes of witches and fires, of drinking and wrathful seething, of beatings and endless pleading. It all seems so never ending, but before he can even think to slump his shoulders. His mères voice sings of shedding that transforms those women's soft skin into hardened scales and from their lungs comes fire. The women dance in firelight, they jump and twirl and sing from their soul in the pale moonlight. They're witches, it's what they were burned for.
“Do you want to know what those fires burned within you and me,” his mère whispers, “dragons, and while they don’t live now we still thrive as the closest thing living and what's that ma vipère?” she hummed.
“Snakes,” he whispers back.
She gives him a rare soft smile.
“Soon enough you'll know what they don’t.”
