    Summary

Ask her if she reads. No, dumb—she clearly reads.
Say something about the weather. What are you, eighty?

“Here you go.” Vi set the coffee down gently, voice a little hoarse. “Black. No sugar. Same cupcake as last time.”

Cait looked up at her with that soft, surprised smile again—like Vi had done something remarkable just by remembering.

“Thank you,” she said, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re very kind.”

    __________

As December nears, Cait arrives in Zaun, hoping to find a sense of home—something to anchor her through the harshness of military training. She finds it in a quiet café, and in the girl behind the counter who takes her breath away. Truth is, they leave each other breathless.

Neither of them is prepared for what fate has in store for their tragic, yet beautiful story.
