    Summary

Stede Bonnet was seven years old the first time he saw a mermaid. Well, the first time he remembered seeing a mermaid, that is. Stede had daydreamed about mermaids for years, indulging the childish fantasies that sustained him through the difficult days of school and home.

But he was seven years old the very first time he met a mermaid.

It was cold - for Barbados anyway - and Stede had fled from the taunting and the bullying to the quiet, deserted dock at the edge of the Bonnet property. It was hardly used, mostly forgotten about, jutting out into the sea and rotting in the salinity.

There was still a spray of blood across his face from his father, the coppery scent making him feel sick with the intensity. The nausea only increased when he tasted the metallic tang on his lips, gagging a little when he realised he had tasted it. Lying on his stomach, he dipped his small hands into the warm surf and splashed it over his face, washing away the hot splatter of animal blood. Red strands spiralled out into small eddies, washed clean and away by the unfathomable largeness of the ocean.

    “Some would call that pollution.”
