Tall and sturdy, capped off with barbed wire, Maria's walls stretch out as a stronghold where the unwanted crawl away from the world's eyes. Within, time warps, minds rot, and madness thrives.
Levi has been in too long to remember the ever-changing blues of the seas beyond. Inside the walls, nothing ever changes; it is always the same schedule, the same stench of piss, the same madness on different faces. Every day, the line between self-preservation and insanity stretches thinner. Every day, the hopes of seeing the vastness of the seas again withers. Because the walls of Maria’s Insane Asylum, Levi knows, are unbreachable.
But order built upon such wretched foundations is bound to collapse at the slightest ripple, and sometimes, all it takes is a sharp-witted newcomer for the tide to crash over the walls.

"Things aren’t that complicated. He wants what he already has with Erwin, but... more.
Maybe Erwin can be tender, the same way he remembers his mother's embrace, warm and soothing. Maybe Erwin will be as gentle and patient as he is when he guides Levi on the cello, when he tended to his injuries. Maybe he can leave Levi as blissfully spent and aching as then. And maybe that’s what Levi wants – Erwin and everything that encompasses him.

"All there is left is the stinging reminder that Levi will never be any of what Erwin sees in him. His mistake had been to let Erwin coerce him into believing he was better than himself. Levi is no virtuosic musician, he is not studious, not clever, loving or funny, and he’s definitely not put together. His broken bits scattered here and there may have been quirky at best, but he’s not a man who’s ever been proper enough to be called that. Erwin had told him it was charming. Quirks and charms are adjectives for people who laugh around flutes of expensive champagne and don’t scrub toilets for a living. They’re not things for Levi. No, down where he’s from, it’s called annoyance and means of survival."

Summary
France, 1986 - The last time Erwin was in Paris, he had it all. Youth, love, success, and his place in some of the most prestigious orchestras of the world. His cello had been his faithful companion through it all, and many said Erwin was the most talented cellist of his time. With such a bright future, it was easy to pretend everything was perfect.
But a lot had changed in ten years.
Now, all he had left were ghosts in his shadows, blurred memories of what used to be, and a body broken beyond repair.
He hoped going back to where it all started would be enough to recover what he’d lost: his ability to hold a cello, to feel, to love. He’d been wrong so far. But there may be another soul just as broken as his, someone who was also wandering in search of their own missing pieces.

Summary
Levi's never been good at giving comfort - the good kind. He doesn't know how to do it any other way than the little services he usually provides.
So Levi thinks, and the only conclusion he can draw then provides no comfort at all. Foolishly, he thought that by feeling and hurting for Erwin, he'd take some of the weight on his own shoulders. And whilst Levi still does, it however does nothing to alleviate the way Erwin's shoulders sag. The weight doesn't get passed onto Levi, it only grows and expands and becomes heavier and heavier, crushing not only Erwin but Levi too.
He doesn't know what to do to counter that.

"It only takes a sultry tone dressed in a grin and the feline sweep of slender limbs for the papers to be forgotten. It’s easy to coax him into bed nowadays, Levi thinks. Erwin’s hunger grows daily and pushes him down Levi’s arms further and further each time. He feels almost like a charlatan, using ploys he’s observed his whole life to draw Erwin closer in, but Levi’s becoming insatiable, and he wouldn’t mind if it’d trick Erwin into forgetting that men have never been the main subject of his desire."
