    “Fanged,” the midwife cheerfully crowed with her gloved fingers prodding into the pup’s mouth. “And a boy!”

    Excitement quietly builds through the room at the announcement. “Congratulations, my love,” her mother kisses Yuuji’s sweaty temple as the child is placed back in her open arms. “And happy birthday.”

    Yuuji purrs in contentment, exhausted down to her bones, but she happily takes her child—her son and looks over his little body. Well, little doesn’t seem right, considering he weighed in at nearly twelve pounds. Yuuji counts all ten fingers and toes and checks over his neck and ribs for any bruising or odd marks, delighted that she finds none.

    Her son begins to whimper, so Yuuji hurries along. It’s then that she notices a strange bump on his privates. She waves over the nurse, only to be startled when the elderly midwife falls to her knees, crying in prayer. Everyone’s unsure what drives her to behave this way until one word pushes out all the air in the room.

    One that hasn’t been spoken in over a hundred years.
