“Morning, Lieutenant.” I say.
His head rolls towards me pointedly. Those damned eyes again. I shiver.
“It’s a beautiful sunrise, isn’t it?” I say with forced brevity.
He grunts. Oh, lovely.
I’m not giving up. “I like your mask.”
“Watch yourself, soldier.” His voice rolls like thunder. I rise to the challenge in his tone.
“I mean it. Prefer a gaiter myself, though. The balaclavas mess with my peripheral vision.” I point to the mask on my own face.
Silence hangs between us for a moment. I’m surprised when he speaks again. “You ever take it off?” As he asks, his eyes drift away from me, towards the airfield.
I shake my head. “Only when I’m undercover, Ghost.”
“It’s Lieutenant or Sir to you.” He says harshly.
“Yes, sir.”
