There are many factors in this decision; none of them Katsuki’s opinion, but she thinks if she had to boil it all down to one reason, it would be this: he is only a little older than her, and Mei has never had a friend aside from Xiao Mei.

    He does not look completely Xingese—his hair is lighter than anyone else’s, and Mei is much paler than his tan, and his eyes are a ferocious, unique red, but they slant like hers and isn’t there that light-haired, red-eyed desert nation to Xing’s west?—but he does not speak Xingese like a second language.

    He does, however, use a wholly different dialect that seems more honorific-based and he still manages to sound ruder with than anyone Mei has ever met.
