Sledding with Shieds

Summary:

People always think I'm sweet and innocent. It's a mistake I don't bother correcting. I am my father's daughter after all. I am a trickster, a prankster, and I can cause my fair share of mischief. How do I get away with it? Easy. People never think the sweet 'girl next door' can be the cause. Even when all the evidence points to me, they still won't believe. In the beginning I always had Dad, Bucky, or Uncle Clint to help me. The time I took Uncle Steve's shield to go sledding all three helped. It was also the first time I think Uncle Steve really noticed me. Not the kid Loki took pity on and brought to the tower, but me, the kid who could sneak out of orphanages, beat a spy at hide and seek, and cause just enough mischief to keep all of our lives interesting. That day it all started with one simple little sentence.

Notes:

Were back to sickening sweetness, the darkness has past. Well for one story at least.

Disclaimer: I own nothing. Really, the kids took it all.

Work Text:

“Daddy, I want to cause a little bit of mischief.” It had been about a week since the pool party. Dad had moved us to the avenger's training facility upstate. There had been a rotating group of heroes coming and going between the tower and facility since we moved in. This weekend Uncle Clint, Uncle Steve, and Bucky were in the facility with us. I still hadn't gotten a chance to really meet the adult who said my words. I was curious about him, and still a little scared of his friend Steve.

“I'm listening.” Dad had a twinkle in his eyes. It was rare that he would tell me not to do something.

“Mr. Captain Person is kinda mean and doesn't share his sled, I think its too small for him anyway. Since we have snow, Uncle Clint said he'd take me sledding and I was hoping to borrow the sled.” I looked into dad's eyes. Dad took a moment to process what I said.

“You want to take Rogers' shield and use it as a sled? Oh my sweet, sweet child, what a marvelous idea. Go gather your coat and things. FRIDAY have Barton come down here please. Also can you have Rogers meet in gym. Ask him to bring his boxing things. Tell him to leave his shield, he won't need it.”

“Agent Barton is on his way. Captain Rogers will meet you in ten minuets.”

“Thank you FRIDAY.” There was a knock on the door. I ran and threw it open.

“Hey kid, your dad needed me for something?” I grabbed Uncle Clint's hand and pulled him inside.

“Uncle Clint you're a spy right?”

“Yeah, I'm retired but I was a spy. Why?”

“Barton we need your help... procuring an item. Marionette can give you the details, I'm on my way to distract Rogers. I'll join you both outside in half an hour.” Loki smirked as he passed us on his way out.

“Procuring an item? Marionette, what's going on?” Uncle Clint knelt in front of me.

“You promised to take me sledding and Mr. Captain is kinda mean and scary. I wanna borrow his shield. Its the perfect size sled for me!” Uncle Clint blink at me a few times.

“Rogers is 'mean and scary'?... so you want to steal his shield... to go sledding? I'm not sure I follow the logic here but I'm in. Let's go get that shield.” I skipped along the halls as Clint led the way. He stopped before a door kneeling before the door he took out a small kit. I watched in wonder as he picked the lock. He slide the door open and raised his hands. His eyes were on something in the room beyond that I couldn't see.

“Wow Uncle Clint that was amazing! Can you teach me? … Hi Mr Bucky! Why do you have a gun?” I rounded the corner and stopped when I saw Bucky aiming a gun at Uncle Clint. Bucky's harsh expression melted into confusion and finally shame. Slowly he put the gun away.

“Hey, kid what are you up too?” he backed away and let me enter the apartment.

“We're going sledding!” I gave Bucky a brilliant smile and looked as innocent as I could. Uncle Clint huffed.

“Don't let her fool you, it was her idea to use Rogers' shield as a sled.” he muttered. Bucky looked stunned before laughing. He turned from us and walked towards the back of the apartment coming back with the shield. He was still laughing as he handed it to Clint

“And she convinced Loki to act as a distraction?”Uncle Clint nodded.

“Yep.” I popped the 'p'.

“You're trouble kid but I gotta see how this sled idea works. I'm invested now. Let me grab my coat and I'll join you guys.” I grabbed Bucky's metal arm and smiled up at him. I saw the wonder in his eyes. I didn't know that my simple acceptance of his metal arm would help remind him on his bad days he was still a person.

XOXOXOX

“Barton. Where. Is. My. Daughter.” I heard dad long before I could see him. I laughed as I flew over their heads still riding the shield. I lost my grip and squealed in delight as I went one way, the shield went the other way. With an echoing thunk the shield hit a tree bouncing into a nearby snow drift. I was pulled from the air and twirled before I could suffer a similar fate. I laughed as I wrapped my arms around Bucky's neck.

“That ramp was great Bucky! Can I do that again?” I could imagine dad's eyebrow twitching at that, but he wasn't in my line of sight so I'll never know for sure.

“You're gonna need a helmet. I know right where we can get one too, it's blue has some wings on the sides. Might be a little big though.”

“Barnes.” There was warning in dad's voice.

“Bucky?!? Were you part of this too?” Uncle Steve pulled his shield from the snowbank. When he stood up I got a good look at his face, a bruise was forming around his eye.

“Mr. Captain Person did you get hit with a ball?” I was sure my eyes were wide. I had seen a few scuffles before, and their aftermath, but he didn't need to know that. I silently hoped dad clocked him good for scaring me.

“Did I get hit with a ball?” Uncle Steve looked confused. He reached up and touched his eye wincing a little at the contact. “Um... yeah. That's what happened... Your dad and I were playing ball and I ...uh... missed.” Bucky started snickering and I tried my hardest to look innocent.

“Stevie you're wasting your breath. Marionette's a bigger troll than you are. And she is most definitely as mischievous as Loki.” Innocence fell off my face as I smirked at Uncle Steve.

“Marionette, now would be a good time to stab Barnes. You never want anyone to expose you, your tricks or your pranks.” Dad called at me. I turned to him slowly.

“But daddy, I like Bucky. He said my words.”

“I know little one, I know. And the dear Captain has yet to apologize for that.”

“Sorry pal, sounds like you're dead.”

“Jerk.” Bucky leaned down and whispered in my ear. I nodded and turned to Uncle Steve.

“You're a punk Mr. Captain Stevie Person.” Bucky and Uncle Clint were rolling with laughter. Even dad laughed at my statement. Uncle Steve's face turned bright red.

Notes:

Please review. Or leave kudos. Kudos are nice too.

I have a bit of news. There are only two more stories left in this series. There will be a time jump between now and the next story. We will see an adult Marionette in the next story, and then the finale will explain why she's been telling this story.
