Work Text:

Izuku was excited to go home for the weekend with Todoroki. The last two and a half weeks had been hellish since the class found out his did was Midori. H. While they were very nice about it, he was getting tired of all the questions they’d been asking.

He barely knew the man for pete's sake!

Kacchan was actually pretty good about it though, and tried to get his crew to stop asking questions. Or threaten them. Ok, so he was constantly threatening them, but it was his way of showing he cared.

Or something like that.

Todoroki already knew, sort of, but also was just more interested in finding out more about Izuku himself. They’d started comparing stories of growing up, and conspiracy theories about anything and everything.

He didn’t want to jinx it, but he wondered if this was what it was like to have a best friend again. Or, he thinks best friend? Maybe something else.

Anyway, shaking that thought aside, he was taking Todoroki back to his place to watch some Unsolved Mysteries. He would’ve done it at the dorms, but his classmates were making a habit of knocking at his door at inopportune times.

Besides, the internet at his place was better.

“It’s a really cool show, Todoroki! You’re gonna love it!” Izuku grinned, motioning wildly.

“I’m sure it will be fun, Midoriya,” Todoroki hummed, looking amazed.

“It’s more than fun!” Izuku countered, opening the door, “Mom! We’re here!”

Izuku was silent for a moment, waiting for the typical response from his mother. But when he turned to look towards the living room, he jumped back.

“All Might?”

Said man jumped in turn, looking rather uncomfortable.

“Hello Young Midoriya, Young Todoroki,” he spoke in a near whisper.

Both boys tensed.

“Is something wrong?” Izuku had a hundred different scenarios playing in his mind, racketing up his anxiety, “Where’s Mom?”

Toshinori nodded his head towards the kitchen, “I wouldn’t go in there.”

Izuku’s eyes widened. What could have frightened the retired number one hero? It must be something awful.

“How long have you been standing here?”

“Half hour? I think?” Toshinori stroked his chin, “It...isn’t my place to interfere. For this, at least.”

Izuku, now confused,  gave a quick look towards Todoroki, who shrugged, before he moved ahead anyway.

Toshinori let him tiptoe past, but stopped beforeTodoroki could follow.

Todoroki raised one cool eyebrow before Toshinori whispered, “Family issue.”

Before he could reply, both boys had jumped from the loud shout of Inko.

“What the hell were you thinking?!”

Izuku gaped. His mom never used this tone before! Who could have caused her such distress?

He peeked his head into the kitchen threshold. There was his mom, sweater and all, pacing back and forth in front of a laptop. On the screen, was a skype video.

There, on the other side of the camera, was Midoriya Hisashi. Bags were under his eyes, and it looked dark. It must have been at least midnight in his part of the world.

“It’s not the end of the world,” his father yawned, “just ignore them.”

“I can’t ignore them Hisashi!”

“Inko, honey-”

“You do not get to call me that!”

Izuku winced as his mother's voice raised another octave, and a small spoon from the sink floated towards her. He had never seen her be so mad that her quirk lost control.

“I’m sorry!” Hisashi raised his hands, “You know I didn’t mean to. Just...I don’t know what the big deal is?”

“You don’t know?” Inko huffed, more silverware floating around, “First, I get a phone call- at work!-- from in-laws I’ve never met demanding to meet my son. And when I tell them to talk to you about this, they tell me that you’ve blocked all contact!”

“Of course I did! They told people I died!”

“And then! After I’m trying to decide what to do about mess one, Endeavour shows up at my door asking if I was aware my husband was cheating on me!

“First off, what the fucking hell did you do to Endeavour? And second, why didn’t you tell me you were dating again--and for some reason it would come back to bite me?”

“I’m not dating Rei!” Hisashi hissed, “She’s my friend! Endeavor can go fuck himself. I’m sorry he bothered you, at home, but there’s nothing I could have done to prevent that!”

“A warning would have been nice, Hisashi. For god’s sake, you’re here one week--One fucking week--and the chaos you cause is astounding!”

Izuku was shocked. He had never heard his mother curse. Ever! And Endeavour was here? And in-laws? What was happening?!

Hisashi seemed like a nice guy. He was cool and listened, but this...this was a lot. And his mom just yelling was not helping.

“Hey, I thought you said I did the right thing,” Hisashi asked.

“You did, but why is this now all on me? You can’t come in and out like this. The least you can do is talk to your parents. I don’t know how to respond to them, and they’re your parents.”

“Tell them to screw off and never bother you again.”

“Hisashi!”

“Inko!”

“Hisashi, this is about Izuku,” his mother sighed, “You can’t just let him head right into the wolf’s den. What if Endeavour had come up to him? Or what if your parents tried to reach out?”

“He’s a good kid, he’ll know how to respond.”

“He is a child! This is not his responsibility--It’s yours!”

“Stop!” Izuku finally shouted, tears streaming down his face, “Just stop!”

Inko and Hisashi both jumped and looked at the boy. Inko lost color, looking close to fainting, and Hisashi just looked so tired.

“Oh...hey, Kid,” Hisashi groaned, “What’re you doing here?”

“Honey, I’m so sorry, how much did you hear?” Inko clutched her chest and seemed to shrink in on herself.

“I heard enough,” Izuku sniffled, “I came home to hang out with Todoroki. But that’s not important right now. You shouldn’t be arguing like this!”

Both seemed to deflate.

“I’m so, so sorry, Izuku,” Inko swallowed, “I didn’t want you involved. This is grown up talk.”

Hisashi snorted, “Oh yeah, real grown up.”

“Quiet you!” Inko hissed.

“Stop, stop,” Izuku grabbed his mom’s shoulders, trying to force her to step back from the camera, “Mom, I’m almost an adult. If something’s bothering you--and involves me--you should tell me.”

Inko looked away, guilty.

“And Hisashi,” Izuku turned to the screen, “I know this is difficult, and you’ve been away. But please understand Mom does a lot. I don’t think it’s fair to her that you can’t help with your parents--my grandparents.”

Hisashi sighed, and ruffled his own hair, “I know, I know. Look, Inko, Izuku, I’m trying. I really am.”

“Hardly,” Inko huffed.

“Mom,” Izuku frowned.

“Anyway,” Hisashi rubbed his face, “I am sorry that Endeavour came over and gave you a hard time. I didn’t think he’d bother you--especially since we’re divorced and all--so I’m sorry he spooked you. But, as for my parents...Inko, what do you want from me?”

“Talk to them!”

“No!”

“Hisashi!”

Izuku held up his hands, trying to placate...well, he guessed his mom since Hisashi couldn’t really see much with this angle of the camera.

“Mom, I know you don’t want me involved, but I am an adult, and if they want to talk to me...ok. Fine, I’ll talk to them.”

Inko frowned, “Oh Honey, no, you don’t have to.”

“She’s right,” Hisashi said, gaining their attention, “Just ignore them. They’ll get bored, eventually.”

Izuku scowled, “No, that’s not right either. Hisashi, I know they’ve been awful to you, but they’re your parents. Don’t they deserve a second chance?”

Hisashi raised an eyebrow, “No. Not really?”

Izuku gaped.

“Izuku, I know you believe in good in everyone, and I think that’s wonderful. You’re great, and have a great outlook on life,” Hisashi sighed and looked away, “But I’m old, and I’m fairly set in my ways. I don’t have good memories of my parents, and I honestly don’t feel the need to reach out. You grew up with your mother, in a very loving environment. I don’t expect you to understand, and I’m grateful you don’t.

But, I refuse to initiate contact again. I’m ok with not speaking to them, and have come to terms on our relationship. If you want to answer them, you’re free to do so. But my parents...they’re old fashioned, cold, and cruel to others. That’s my warning.”

Izuku swallowed, and nodded. He knew of terrible childhoods. Hell, Todoroki still won’t go into detail as to what his father had done. But...he guessed he could understand Hisashi point of view. He didn’t agree, but he didn’t want to push him. Not if he didn’t know what happened.

“Ok,” Izuku let out a breath, “I’ll contact them and decide if I want to continue to reach out.”

Inko frowned, “You don’t have to.”

“No, it’s ok,” Izuku gave a small smile, “Maybe they’ve grown. It’ll be...interesting.”

Inko sighed, but nodded, “Alright. I’ll give you the number they reached out to me on. But please tell me if they do anything, cause I swear, I will deal with them if I have to.”

Hisashi chuckled, “I’d pay money to see that.”

Inko glared through the camera, “I’m still mad at you.”

The other shrugged, “Not much I can do here at 2am. Should I get Toshinori to come over instead, to make it all better?”

Izuku cringed, “He’s in the other room.”

“Oh good, maybe I can just yell to him,” Hisashi mused.

“Ok, no,” Inko shook her head and reached for the laptop lid, “Goodnight, Hisashi.”

“Night Inko, Izuku,” Hisashi waved.

“Night,” Izuku waved back.

There was a moment of silence, where neither Midoriya wanted to speak. Inko fidgeted with her hands, while Izuku bit his lip and couldn’t meet the others eye.

“Uhm,”

They were both snapped out of it by Todoroki and Toshinori standing at the door.

“Is all well?” Toshinori asked.

“Yes,” Inko sighed, “I think so,” she turned to Izuku and gave a small smile, “Or, it will be. I’ll text you their number. If you want to call...just...tell me how it goes?”

Midoriya nodded, “Yeah, ok.”

“Uhm, can we watch the unsolved thing now?” Todoroki shifted uncomfortably.

“Yes! Of course!” Izuku grinned, “You’re gonna love it!”

Izuku and Todoroki sprinted off, Inko guessing to his room, and waited for the door to click shut. After, she turned to Toshinori, walked over slowly, and just...fell into the others arms, who quickly caught her.

“Tell me I’m doing the right thing?”

Toshinori patted her head, “Of course you are.”

Inko hummed, “That man will be the death of me.”

Toshinori gave a small laugh, “I would hope not.”

She couldn’t help but grin, “Well...the boys will be hungry at some point. Shall we make lunch?”

“I think we shall.”

Notes:

Here's my idea of angst. Sorry if it doesn't live up to the hype. I was really excited when I first started writing this cause, 1, I don't write angst often, and 2, I feel like...i gave Hisashi too much credit? Like he was too nice? So, yeah, here he is being more stubborn.

Let me know what you'd like to see next!
