Retweet for ‘Yes’

Summary:

Chris hadn’t tweeted in months. He was notoriously bad at social media. So, really, Miyuki was only helping when he tweeted:

Send me pictures of your dogs.

or

Miyuki gets a hold of Chris' phone...and his Twitter account.

Notes:

This fic was written for Daiya no Ace Rare Pair Week 2020 for the 'Swap' prompt.

Shout out to Aargle who pointed out that Chris is a Yadier Molina fan. I'm going to use this information forever. XD

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Miyuki knew as soon as he unlocked his phone that it wasn’t actually his phone.

His phone background was the same plain boring stock background that came with the phone. This phone background was a picture of Yadier Molina.

Miyuki huffed a laugh because only Takigawa Chris Yuu was such a big dork.

He opened up the text messenger and sent a text to his own phone.

It’s Miyuki. Please tell me you have my phone because I have yours.

He then set aside Chris’ phone and went back to making breakfast.

Last night had been one of those rare instances where most of the old Seido team had been in town and an impromptu reunion had been thrown together. Which had been unsurprisingly rowdy and surprisingly fun--mostly because Miyuki and Chris had gone through their usual song and dance of flirting, but not flirting, but totally flirting and yet not actually doing anything about it.

Though something had happened. They obviously mixed up their phones.

It was easy to see how the mix up had happened. Their phone cases were exactly the same. Simple and black. Well rated for strength and durability while still being practical. Miyuki had bought his based on Chris’ recommendation afterall.

Miyuki finished up breakfast and out of habit snapped a photo of it. There was just something satisfying about cooking and plating something perfectly. He texted the photo to his own phone before sitting down to eat.

Halfway through breakfast the phone lit up with a string of messages.

I have your phone. I can’t meet up till later to swap.
Does 7PM work for you?
Why are you sending me pictures of your breakfast?

Miyuki laughed as he set down his chopsticks and picked up the phone.

7 works for me.
Save the photo to my phone for me will you?

Sure.
Why do you have a whole album dedicated to pictures of food?

I find it aesthetically pleasing. What do you take photos of?

Dogs.

Miyuki almost spit out his miso soup. “What?”

He opened up Chris’ photos and, sure enough, there was a whole album dedicated to dogs. Miyuki laughed as he scrolled through the photos of what must have been every dog Chris had ever come across.

You really like dogs.

I do. My dad is allergic so I could never have one as a kid.

Your dad is named ‘Animal’.

I know. The irony.

Miyuki smiled through the rest of breakfast. He cleaned up and then because he thought it was funny he opened up Chris’ Twitter app. Chris hadn’t tweeted in months. He was notoriously bad at social media. So, really, Miyuki was only helping when he tweeted:

Send me pictures of your dogs.

---

Miyuki stretched and put his earbuds in. Normally, he would have listened to music on his phone while he ran, but since he didn’t have his phone…

Miyuki found Chris’ music and skimmed through it. Most of it he had never heard of because it was all in English. He found one playlist labeled ‘Running Mix 1’ and figured that was a good enough place to start. He hit shuffle and took off.

Turned out, Chris listened to pop music. And honestly, that shit was catchy.

And it didn’t matter that Miyuki wasn’t well versed in English. The lyrics didn’t really matter. All that mattered was that the songs were upbeat and he was able to zone out as he ran. He paused halfway through in order to drink some water, take a screenshot of the playlist and post to Chris’ account:

Rec me some songs.

---

Miyuki was working on putting together a ‘Miyuki Saves the Day’ playlist for Chris as he walked back to his apartment. It was made up of nothing but songs recommended by Twitter. He was also retweeting his favorite dog photos--because this dog playing fetch had three legs and this dog had found the largest stick at the park and this dog had fallen asleep funny on a sofa--

And Miyuki was starting to see why Chris had so many dog photos on his phone.

---

Miyuki balanced Chris’ phone between his ear and his shoulder and he walked through the aisle of running shoes. He had noticed his were getting a little worn out and would probably need replacing soon.

His dad picked up on the third ring, “Miyuki Steel.”

“Have you ever considered getting a dog?”

There was a long pause. “Who is this?”

Miyuki laughed. “Your son.”

It wasn’t all that surprising when his dad hung up on him. His dad could probably use a dog. Like this one that someone had just tweeted at Chris. It was so fluffy. It was difficult to be grumpy around something so fluffy, right?

Miyuki was so preoccupied with picking shoes, adding songs to his playlist and dogs in general that he almost walked right past the mannequin in tight, bright red skinny jeans. He paused and doubled backed. Studying the pants for a moment before stopping an employee and saying,

“I’m sorry to bother you, but could I try on a pair of these pants?”

---

Miyuki was a little bit shorter than Chris, but besides that they had a similar build. Really if you couldn’t see his face...who was to know that it wasn’t Chris trying on bright, red skinny jeans?

It took some doing, but Miyuki sat down on the bench in the dressing room--seriously, how did anyone move in these things? Miyuki’s thighs looked amazing in them, but was it worth it?

Obviously there was only one way to find out:

Should I buy these pants? Like for ‘No’. Retweet for ‘Yes’.

---

Miyuki bought the pants.

The Internet seemed to think it was a good idea and the Internet was never wrong, right?

---

“Miyuki Steel.”

“Dad, it’s me. Don’t hang up.” Miyuki took the following silence as confirmation. “What if I got a dog? Would you look after it while I was on the road?”

“Can I hang up now?”

“That’s not a ‘no’!” replied Miyuki cheerfully.

His dad may or may not have heard him. It was hard to tell when exactly he had hung up. Which was fine because Miyuki needed to pay attention to the TV anyway.

Turned out, Chris wasn’t free til later because he was being interviewed. It was one of those fluff pieces that Miyuki was always asked to participate in and his agent always turned down. Probably because he had a low tolerance for silly questions and wasn’t nearly as charming as Chris was as he walked down the street with the reporter. He was showing her where his favorite bakery was while talking about the upcoming season.

It was pretty boring. Until it wasn’t.

Until the reporter turned towards Chris with a slight blush as she told him,

“I ‘retweeted’, by the way.”

And it was so very obvious that Chris had no idea what she was talking about but he still politely ducked his head and said, “Thank you.”

Miyuki laughed until he cried. Even more so when Chris texted him later with:

What did you do?

Miyuki didn’t bother responding. He needed to go grocery shopping. Which reminded him--Miyuki took out Chris’ phone and tweeted:

What should I have for dinner?

Miyuki put the phone back into his pocket and grabbed his jacket.

And besides, Chris was smart. He’d figure it out sooner or later.

---

Miyuki was pushing a shopping cart and thinking about dinner when Chris’ phone buzzed. It was a text from Tanba. And normally Miyuki would have just ignored it except that it said:

Why is Miyuki tweeting love songs at you?

Miyuki came to a complete stand still in the middle of the grocery store. “Miyuki is doing what now?”

Chris didn’t have any notifications set. Not even when Miyuki tweeted. Rude. Miyuki fixed that before looking into what the hell Chris was doing with his account.

Not that he hadn’t believed Tanba...but, yeah, Chris was tweeting love song recommendations. They were all in English, but if the accompanying music videos were any indication, Chris had chosen the cheesiest, most ridiculous love songs from the 80’s.

And Miyuki laughed because...what the hell?

Chris was also, apparently, requesting hamburgers for dinner.

Miyuki snorted and tweeted back jokingly,

What kind of wine pairs with that?

Miyuki was in the middle of choosing a hamburger bun when Chris tweeted back:

Beer. Obviously. Don’t forget the french fries.

“Bossy,” muttered Miyuki as he tossed a bag of buns into the cart and headed back to the produce section for potatoes.

---

“Miyuki Steel.”

“Dad--”

“Kazuya, get a dog. Don’t get a dog. You’re an adult. Make your own damn decisions. Besides don’t you have a date you need to get ready for?”

Miyuki laughed and then realized, “Wait. Dad. Do you follow me on Twitter? Dad, seriously? Dad? Hello?”

---

Chris showed up at seven o’clock sharp. Holding a six pack of beer--

And wearing the bright, red pants.

“We match!” declared Miyuki before almost falling over because he was laughing so hard.

Chris was trying not to smile and failing as he used Miyuki’s shoulder for balance in order to take off his shoes.

“Oh my God. Take your fucking phone back and give me mine.”

Miyuki was still giggling as they swapped phones. Chris shoved his into his back pocket. The pants were so tight the phone was half hanging out. And Miyuki watched Chris walk into his apartment with an appreciative sigh.

“You know, the Internet was right. These are great pants.”

Chris snorted. “These pants are awful. They just make our butts look good.”

“I’ll drink to that,” said Miyuki with a grin. “Play your playlist while you’re at it. Dinner is almost ready.”

---

Dinner turned out amazing, if Miyuki didn’t say so himself.

He snapped a photo of it and tweeted it with the caption:

Ask and you shall receive.

It didn’t take the Internet long to remember what Miyuki had already forgotten. He had asked for dinner recommendations from Chris’ account.

“Ah, whoops.”

Chris paused in raising his beer to his lips. “Do I even want to know?”

Miyuki locked his phone and set it back down on the table. “That depends...how much do you care about the Internet thinking we’re dating?”

“This wasn’t a date?”

“Oh. It totally was.”

Chris shrugged. “Then I don’t care who knows.”

---

They learned later that night that the pants were impossible to take off.

Miyuki laughed as he lost his balance and tumbled off of the bed. “These pants are the worst!”

Chris collapsed onto the bed after a failed attempt to shimmy out of his own pair. “Seriously, do you have a pair of scissors?”

“I mean...maybe...somewhere…”

“Nevermind. Just get back up here.”

And that Miyuki could do. He crawled over Chris. Propping himself up on his elbow. “Whose brilliant idea was this?”

Chris chuckled as he arched up in order to say against Miyuki’s lips, “I believe it was yours, genius.”

Miyuki hummed as he rolled his hips. “Better take responsibility then.”

Chris sucked in a sharp intake of breath. “Miyuki Kazuya, I swear, if you make me come in my pants like a fucking teenager--”

“Well, there’s one fantasy I can check off the list...”

Chris barked out a laugh. “Oh my God.”

Miyuki swallowed his laughter with a sloppy kiss made even more sloppy by the fact that they kept smiling.

---

Miyuki was still half asleep when he answered his phone. “Moshi, moshi.”

It was not his phone.

“MIYUKI KAZUYA! WHY ARE YOU ANSWERING CHRIS-SENPAI’S PHONE?!”

Miyuki held the phone away from his ear as he glanced at Chris. “It’s for you.”

Chris laughed. “Oh no. You started this.”

“Fine,” grumbled Miyuki as he placed the phone back against his ear. “Sawamura, when two people love each other very much--”

“GAGH! NO! I DON’T WANT TO KNOW!”

Miyuki chuckled as Sawamura hung up and he tossed the phone back on the nightstand. “That was surprisingly easy.”

“So...you love me?” asked Chris in a feigned casualness.

Miyuki snorted as he curled back up with him. “I mean, I’ve almost convinced my dad to take care of our dog when we’re on the road, so…”

Chris sat up, suddenly and instantly awake. Jostling Miyuki off of him in his excitement. “You got me a dog?”

“Our dog,” laughed Miyuki. “And no. Not yet. Keep up.”

“Ugh, fine,” replied Chris as he resettled back into the bed. “When do you want to go pick one out?”

“Is the second date moving too fast?”

Chris yawned. “Naw.”

Miyuki scooted closer and placed a kiss on Chris’ jaw. “Then it’s a date.”

He could feel when Chris smiled. “We’re doing great at this dating thing so far.”

“Yeah, we are. High five.”

Chris huffed a laugh but he still held up his hand and Miyuki slapped it with all of his early morning coordination.

It was Miyuki’s turn to yawn as he buried his face into Chris’ shoulder. “You really love me?”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t hand my Twitter account over to just anyone,” mumbled Chris as he wrapped an arm around Miyuki. “I’m not getting that back, am I?”

“No way.”

“Why mess with a good thing?”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“Because nothing says, ‘I love you’, like a shared social media account.”

“I’m glad we’re on the same page.”

“Obviously,” said Chris as he held up his hand again.

Miyuki grinned. And high fived him.
