All For One

Summary:

Ron has always believed that what adults say has to be followed. But then why the adults were not paying attention to the bruises on Harry’s arms? How could they ignore when the three students have consequently faced danger in two years?
Does this mean that adults don’t care or are they being blind?

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Chapter 1

Ron stares at Harry as he recounts his conversation with Dumbledore and his subsequent confrontation with Lucious Malfoy. He shook his head and said “Blimey Harry! You were bloody mad confronting Malfoy like that. What if he had actually managed to hex you? And all for a bloody house elf?”. Harry shrugged his shoulder. He said “All of this would not have been possible with Dobby Ron. I mean he did try to warn me although his methods were not that effective. And I did extract a promise from him not to try to save me again.” Ron snorted and said “I mean I hope he doesn’t have an opportunity again that’s true. Don’t know what measures he will take to save you next time?”. Harry punched Ron’s shoulder in gesture. Ron asked “So is Dumbledore informing the Ministry about the Diary?”. Harry’s brow came together in confusion. He said “Actually Dumbledore did not say what he will tell to the Minister.”

Ron said “But shouldn’t this Diary business be informed to the Ministry? I mean this is very advanced Dark Magic. And I don’t need Hermione…” Ron stopped as he remembers Hermione’s petrified body. Harry squeezes his arm in comfort. Ron shakes off and said “Someone has to pay for the consequences of this.” Harry shrugs and said “I don’t think Dumbledore will inform the Ministry about the diary. As far as I know, your parents may have a better idea on what is going to be done.” Ron nods and said “I will ask them later.” Ron then pulls Harry into a hug surprising Harry. Harry hugs him back. Ron said “Thank you Harry. For saving my sister.”

Harry breaking the hug, looking a little uncomfortable said “It was all a fluke Ron. If Fawkes did not come in time with the Sorting Hat, then we wouldn’t have been able to defeat Voldemort.” Ron shook his head and said “Charlie told me about phoenixes Harry. They told come to those who they consider worthy. And being considered worthy by a phoenix is the highest honour Harry.” Harry then puts his arm around Ron and said “Then you should also consider yourself worthy Ron. You came with me.” Ron said “No, I came because Ginny was my sister.” Harry said “You would have come with me Ron, even if Ginny wasn’t in the Chamber. I know that.”

Ron never had someone be so sure in him as sure Harry was that he would have been there with Harry step by step. Thinking Ron knew that even though a part of him was for to protect his sister, the major part of him was more about going to be with Harry. There was no Hermione to warn them, there was only him that had to protect Harry’s back. And he knew in that moment, that more than he considered himself a Weasley, he considered himself as Harry’s best friend.

Two days later,

Ron for the first time, felt normal. Hermione and Harry was sitting opposite him as they were having the feast. Exams were cancelled, and so Hermione was sad but not mad about it. Now the only concern remained was what to do about Harry’s living situation. He asked Harry “So mate, where are you going to say for the summer?”. Harry’s expression turns sour and he jabs his fork into his potatoes. Harry said “Don’t spoil the mood Ron. I have to enjoy my last meal before the Dursleys start the process again.” Ron and Hermione look at each other in shock. Hermione said in a gentle voice “Harry, did you inform Dumbledore about what the Dursleys did last summer.” Harry shook his head and said “It is no use Hermione, I asked Dumbledore during the first year, whether I can stay at Hogwarts for the summer also. He said it is necessary for me to go back to the Dursleys. He said it is for my own protection.” Ron and Hermione look at each other now in despair. Ron said “Which part of bars on your window and locks on your door, is part of your own protection?”. Harry just shrugged his shoulders and said “Dursley’s know now that you all are there for me. They know they also can’t stop me from coming to Hogwarts. Best is keep out of their way for the summer and we all can go back to pretending that neither of us exist. Its just two months. And I am sure after one month, I can come to the Burrow. Right Ron?”. Ron nodded his head mutely but Hermione could clearly see the storm in his eyes. And when Ron looks at Dumbledore, she could slowly see some cracks appearing in the trust present in his eyes. And to be honest, she started feeling those cracks herself.

Chapter 2

Ron paced from one side to another. Its been two days since he has come back from Hogwarts and he has just sent the letter to Harry. He looks towards the window again seeing if Errol was back. He knew, that It will take Errol at least a day to return back from Harry but he could not help but worry. Suddenly Ron felt a gaze upon him. Turning he saw Ginny sitting on the stairs staring at him. Ron stares back. He had not spoken to Ginny since he has been back from Hogwarts. She has spent most of the time in her room. Molly had forbidden everyone from entering her room. Ron slowly walks towards Ginny approaching her like approaching a petrified animal. Ron asked “Alright Ginny.” Ginny simply nods her head. Molly enters the room and seeing Ginny sitting on the staircase exclaims “Ginny what are you doing out of bed? I was just coming to give you breakfast.” Ginny stays silent but her pleading gaze tells Ron that she did not want to go back to bed. Ron said “Mom, why don’t I take Ginny outside for some fresh air? Its been two days and she maybe feeling cooped up.” Molly said “Nonsense, Ginny needs to rest. Now come on Ginny lets get you back to bed.”

Molly was going to take Ginny’s arm to take her back to bed but Ron steps in front of her. Looking at the resolute expression on Ron’s face, Molly is startled. But Ron said “Just for 10 minutes Mom. Ginny looks a little pale, she could do with some fresh air.” Looking at Ginny, she saw that her daughter is twisting her fingers on the shawl covering her but she made no move, in protesting Ron’s decision. Molly looks back at Ron and nods her head. Ron said “Keep Fred and George inside. Please Mom?”. Molly gives her consent. She sees Ron turn towards Ginny and put his hand out. At first she thought Ginny wont’ accept but is surprised when Ginny puts her hand in Ron and Ron leads her outside.

Ron leads Ginny outside and takes her beside the pond to sit. He knew that it was Ginny’s favourite place other than taking the brooms from the shed and flying around. He asked “Want to take a ride on the broomstick. You can take Charlie’s and I can take Bill’s.” Ginny looks at Ron and finally said “You hate using Bill’s. Said its too stiff and you never allow anyone of us to take Charlie’s broomstick. And how did you know that I know how to fly?”. Ron looks at Ginny with his eyebrows raised and said “Ginny, my bedroom window faces the broom shed. You are mental if you think that I did not pay attention of when you were using the brooms to fly. You know I wake up at the slightest sound of the broomstick flying.” Ginny replies “Or of the smell of the chocolate cookies and Mom bakes. Yeah, we know. You seem to have a big nose, when it comes to Mom’s cooking. That is why you always reach the table first.”

Ron replies “Hey I am a growing boy, I need food.” Ginny now looks at him with her brows raised and Ron begins to chuckle. Slowly, Ginny also starts to chuckle and soon the sounds of laughter is echoed across the pond. Ginny is the one to calm down first and soon Ron also follows his laughter now resulting in breathlessness. Looking at the pond, Ginny said “I am sorry Ron.” Ron looks at her puzzled. Ginny now not able to meet Ron’s gaze said “If I hadn’t written in that stupid diary, then none of this would have happened. Because of me, Hermione got petrified and Harry almost died trying to save me.” Ginny finally find the strength, looks at Ron. Looking at Ron’s stormy expression, Ginny realized that this is the moment that her brother will hate her forever. But what pops out of Ron’s mouth is “What do you mean Harry almost died trying to save you?”.

Looking at Ginny’s startled expression, Ron wants to calm down but could not find in himself to do so. He opens his mouth and demands “Ginny tell me everything that happened down in that Chamber?”. Ginny then recounts what happened down at the Chamber after she gained consciousness. Ron stares at her glumly and Ginny now fears the silence seeing in her brother’s expression. She has never seen Ron so serious about anything in her life. Ron was always either grumbling or joining in the fun with them. Ron then said in a calm voice that sent shivers down her arm as he said “The Basilisk fang came when it got stuck in his arm.” Ginny nods her head silently. Ron then said again “So if Fawkes wasn’t there, I would be attending my best friend’s funeral.” Ginny winced but nodded silently. Ron slowly got up and walked to the broom shed. Unsure what was going on, Ginny silently followed him. Ron opens the broom shed and takes out a broom that hardly anyone of them used.

Ginny knew when Harry came last summer, Ron had given Charlie’s broom. Other than Harry, Ron had never given Charlie’s broom to anybody. It was one of the things, no one could argue him with. Ron had used that broom, but did not make a sound of protest in front of Harry. Ginny’s thoughts break seeing Ron step outside with that broom. Ginny thinks Ron is going to go flying. But Ron surprises her again. He takes the broom to a tree. The tree was usually used by Ron and Harry to just sit underneath the tree and talk. She never knew what they talked about but she knew both her brother and Harry enjoyed spending time alone with each other and away from the family.

Ron stands in front of that tree, and glares at the place where Harry usually sat. The next second, he hits that place and said “Git.” Ginny felt the air around her grow heavier. Ron continues hitting that place and said “Stupid, Idiot, Made it seem like the rescue was a piece of cake, piece of cake my ass. You stupid, moronic, I could have lost you. But no, you heroic had to take that risk. Stupid, Stupid git, we should have gone to get the professor but no.” And when hitting the place wasn’t enough, Ron started hitting the broomstick on the tree. Ginny felt the air around her getting heavier and she knew that the atmosphere is becoming saturated with magic due to Ron’s emotions. Mom had taught them that technique, when they were feeling too emotional. Ginny ran back to the house and entering shouted “Mom.”

Molly, Fred, George and Percy came running hearing Ginny’s shout thinking something went wrong with her. But hearing, Ginny’s words about Ron, all of them were surprised and rushed outside and stood in shock seeing at the scene in front of them. The air sparkled in red, as Ron continued hitting the tree with the broomstick. Molly could see particles of magic going up the tree. Yet Ron continued hitting the broomstick against the tree. Molly hurries towards Ron but finds something stopping her. Putting her hand out, Molly could feel a barrier having interrupted between Molly and Ron. Molly shouts out but Ron does not seem to hear. Ginny, Fred, George and Percy hurry towards Molly and encounter the same barrier. They call out but Ron shows no indication of hearing. Suddenly, the broomstick in his hand breaks, as he strikes the last time on the bark of the tree. Ron looks at the broomstick in his hand with a furious expression, and the atmosphere around them clears and they could move forward. Molly followed by others hurry towards Ron. However, Ron just ignores them and angrily muttering to himself “Stupid Git, I will toss him in the pond when I see him. You watch out……….” And continuously muttering to himself, wanders back to the house showing no awareness of his stunned family. Molly turns to the tree and is shocked to see the mark of the broomstick carved into the tree. Molly turns towards the tug on her hand and looking down at Ginny, Ginny said “Mom, this is normal. Right?”. And Molly did not know what answer to give.

Chapter 3

Ron kept on stabbing at his food barely feeling hungry. Feeling someone’s stare on him, he looks up to see Fred and George duck down eating their food. Its been an entire day since he found out yet his anger shows no signs of abatement. Molly looks on worriedly as Ron takes a bite of his toast but barely touches anything. There was only one time when such a reaction had taken place. When the twins had turned his favourite teddy bear into a spider. Molly remembers the three days when Ron was completely silent and barely eating anything. Molly had scolded the twins for such a prank but even then her mind was occupied, with getting Bill and Charlie ready for Hogwarts along with managing Percy, Fred, George and Ginny. It was only when Charlie had come to her that she knew it was something serious.

Flashback,

Molly was busy making the breakfast, when she heard someone clear their throat behind her. Turning back she saw Charlie standing there shuffling his feet. The expression on his face said that he wanted to say something but did not know how to say it. Molly said impatiently “Charlie, has Fred and George done something again? I have told them to stay out of your Hogwarts things. Did they take something?”. Charlie silently shook his head. Molly waits but turns back to see the vegetables cutting is properly taking place or not. Charlie said when her back was turned “Its Ron.”

Molly looks at him startled. Charlie said “He barely goes out even to play Quidditch. He sits in his room and just stares out of the window. Me and Bill tried to coax him to play a game but he does not agree. Ginny tries to make him play with her but after sometime she gives up when he does not make those noises she likes. Fred and George have said sorry, but I don’t think they mean it because they have been ignoring him for these days. And he has passed half of his food to Ginny or to me. He did not even have the French toast you made today Mom and you know he loves your French toast. I am worried Mom. I think Ron is badly hurt by what Fred and George did. Even today Fred and George went in to talk to him but he just ignored them.”

Molly looks at him in shock, it is true that Ron usually loves her French toast and he always asks for second helpings. Today he did not ask for the second helpings. Molly leaves the kitchen and heads to Ron’s room. Since Charlie has been rooming with Bill, Ron has been rooming on his own. And as far as she remembers, he loves the room since it was Charlie’s room before he went to Hogwarts. Knocking on the door, she heard Ron’s voice said “Go away, I don’t want to talk to you.” Entering the room, she said softly “Ron.”
Ron looks up from his Chudley Cannon figures and stares at her in silence. Looking at his expression, Molly felt a sense of guilt arise in her. At a very young age, Ron has become the most self sufficient child. At this age, she always knew that other children get under the feet of their parents, looking to explore but Ron never went anywhere without any of them knowing. He used to sense automatically when she used to feel stressed and get about helping her in doing work something which none of her children did not do on their own.

But today, his expression shows that he has also developed a new ability which was unknown to Molly. An ability to hide his emotions, to suppress them. His expression was blank, which would have put an adult to shame. He looks down at his Chudley Cannon figures and continues playing with them. Molly sits down beside him, and said “What happened Ronnie? Why are you so down?”. Ron said “Mom, why did I not have another?”. Molly looks at him puzzled. Molly asks him gently “What another Ronnie?”. Ron points to himself “Another me.” Molly feels something inside her soften and said “Sometimes Ron, An another you may have been left somewhere else.” Ron looks at her, his gaze full of hope and said “Another me?”

Molly opens her arms and Ron goes in them. She hugs him to herself tightly and hopes that her next words does not become a lie. She said “Yes, another you will be somewhere out there in the world. Someone who makes you so mad, that you will hit anything but you will never harm him. You may hurt him, but never harm him. Another you, who you will be so loyal to you and he will be also very loyal to you. And you both will go on so many adventures and you will never even remember the life before him?. Ron said something but his voice muffled in her shirt. Molly separates him a little and said “What you said Ronnie?”. Ron said “Can we be three? Then we can trouble Fred and George also.” Molly huffs a small laugh and said “Yes, you can be three.” Ron said “Can I have both boy and girl friends?”. Molly removing the hair from his eyes, said “Yes, you can friends who are both boy and girl. But remember one thing Ronnie.” Ron looks at her expectantly as Molly said “Even when you find another you, you do not forget family. You do not forget that you have 5 brothers and 1 sister. As much important your friends are, that much important is family and you have to forgive the mistakes that family often makes in their ignorance.” Ron frowns and said with a frown “Every mistake?”. Molly nods her head. Ron huffs adorably but nods his head. Molly then rubs his hair and said “why don’t you go and play with Charlie and Bill? They are forming teams right now.”

Ron huffs but again nods reluctantly. He puts away his Chudley Cannon Figures and runs out of the room, shouting for Charlie to include him in the team. Molly looks on as her children play the game but wonders whether her words, may impact Ron in a good or bad way.

Flashback ends.

Molly’s thoughts clear on hearing the door open. Arthur enters the house announcing his arrival. All the Weasleys shout out the greeting but Ron just replies with a grunt. Molly admonishes Ron and said “Greet your father properly Ron.” Ron looks up at Arthur who was removing his throat and demanded “Dad, when is Lucious Malfoy going to be in Azkaban?”. Everyone’s movements stills. Arthur pales but asks “Why should Lucious Malfoy be in Azkaban Ron?”. Ron said “Because he was the one who put the diary in Ginny cauldron?”

All of them stare at him in shock. Percy breaks the silence by saying “How do you know this Ron?”. Ron looks at him with a duh expression and said “Harry told me.” Arthur clears his throat and said “Well Ron, maybe Harry is mistaken. There is no evidence stating that Lucious is behind this.” Ginny had gone severely pale and Molly is standing behind her holding her shoulder for her or Ginny’s support.

Ron’s eyes narrowed “At the start of last summer, Malfoy’s house elf came to warn Harry not to go to Hogwarts because he knew what Lucious was planning. Harry can get him to testify, he adores Harry. But which Auror does Harry have to take that house elf to? You can take us there Dad.” Arthur again clears his throat and said “Ron, Harry is a 12 yr old boy……….” Ron interrupts saying “Who went down the Chamber Of Secrets on his own, defeated a Basilisk and nearly got himself killed in the process just to save Ginny for me. So Dad, my question again, who is investigating the Basilisk attacks, Harry can provide evidence.” Arthur finally signs and said “Ron son, no one is investigating the Basilisk attacks of Hogwarts. If someone investigates then all evidence points Ginny to being to culprit which is bad for us Ron. And no one wants to investigate since it was only muggleborns………”

Ron stands up from his chair, his food untouched and said in a calm voice which send a chill down everyone’s spine “So you mean, no one is going to investigate the Basilisk attacks in Hogwarts because muggleborns were attacked. Me, Harry and Hermione made so much effort to stop the Heir, that effort was nothing. We broke so many laws, that law breaking was nothing. Hermione was petrified and Harry was nearly killed that effort was nothing. I nearly lost my two best friends, that was for nothing. And you do not want to even find justice for Ginny because you are worried that your reputation will be spoiled? That does not state any traits of Gryffindor Dad, that just makes you a coward.” Everyone stood up and shouted at Ron for saying something like this to Arthur. Molly’s voice was the loudest as she said “Ron, apologise to your father right now.” Ron looks at him with coldness present in his eyes and said “No Mom, what you and Dad are doing is wrong. You know maybe Lucious Malfoy is right. Maybe it is better being on the Dark side. Because it seems like being on the Light side, does not give us any chance of even having a small victory.”

And he storms out of the kitchen, leaving everyone stunned and scared.

Ron sits under the grove of the tree, his hands folded across his body. Seeing the shadows, fall upon him he looks up to see Fred and George looking down upon him. Fred had anger present in his expression while George’s expression showed some contemplation. Fred shouted to Ron “What you said inside was wrong Ron.” Ron replies back “But it was the truth. Dad is too afraid to take a step to even get justice.” George said quietly “Ron, things are not always easy as it seems. You know how we are considered in the wizarding society. If word gets out that a Weasley member was responsible for the mess, then we will be in big trouble Ron. Everyone will look at us in suspicion.” Ron looks at them and said silently “So if we were attending Hermione and Harry’s funerals, then would you have said this to me even then?”. Both Fred and George flinched. Fred said “they are not dead Ron. Stop pretending about something that is not going to happen. Ginny is family, they are not.” Ron looks at him with disgust present in his expression. George elbowed Fred and glares at him also. Ron said in a sarcastic voice “Thanks a lot Fred, for clearing out who is friend and who is family. But let me make one thing clear. Harry is family, just because he does not share the same blood as Ginny that does not mean his life should not be considered also.” Fred however scoffs and said “Oh get over it Ron!, you are just with Harry because of his Boy Who Lived reputation. We are the ones who know the real Harry. When it comes to knowing the Harry the Boy Who Lived and knowing Harry the Boy, I am sure we can list more attributes than even you can. I mean, you are anyway big on comparison. You always see yourself as unfortunate being a Weasley. You are just with Harry, because you want to be seen as doing something different.” The next second, a bone is heard being crunched as Ron’s fist hits Fred’s nose.

George is stunned as Ron raised his fists on Fred and kept on hitting. Reacting the next second, George calls out for the rest of his family as he pulls Ron off of Fred. Ron struggles against George’s hold, as Molly and Arthur rushes towards them and stands between then. Molly checks Fred’s face while Arthur looks at Ron and George with a serious expression. He said “This is not how we end fights boys, We do not use fists.” George said “Its not Ron’s fault Dad. Fred started it first.” Fred looks at George with a betrayed expression. Ron shrugs out of George’s hold and said to Fred “You don’t know Harry. You don’t how he flinches at the slightest touch from the back, how he wakes up sweating yet makes no sound making sure no one is disturbed. You just see Harry, as a seeker of the Quidditch team, the boy who lived etc. You were right about one thing Fred. You do know the Harry he portrays to everyone. But you were also wrong about one thing today. You do not know me at all not even a bloody bit. Thanks for proving to me today Fred, that Harry is more of a brother to me than any of you has been a brother to me.”

And Ron stalks off, leaving again a stunned silence.

Notes:

So, There are two reasons why I am making Ron question. First is he has lived the longest in the wizarding world, so he knows the rules and customs and how events such as the Chamber of Secrets should have been handled. So he should have been the most likely to question when something is not going right because his nature has also shown that he does ask good questions when he is bothered about something.

Second, in the books, I have always felt that till the 7th book, Ron has been portrayed as a naive character which does not make sense for a person who is a chess master as seen in Book 1. He does not question Harry, because he believes that Harry is always honest with him even when decisions are not good. He does get clouded with emotions, which is reasonable but no one in his family never even take the initiative to find out about his feelings related to events happening in his life. I mean from Book 1- Book 7, Ron has been in constant danger, yet no one makes any effort to find out how Ron handled himself. Instead, Twins make fun of him, Ginny just ignores him and Percy just bosses him and Bill and Charlie show no involvement in Ron's life at all. Seriously makes no sense to me since Weasleys, is being portrayed as a close knit family.
Harry is seen as a very close friend of Ron, yet even he is able to spot the difference between the treatment of him and Ron in the Weasley family and even in the books somewhere a dialogue or a thought is seen noting this difference. Yet, through out the book, not a word or a thought from Ron's side. So now I want to explore on how the Weasley's family members react when Ron questions them on their behavior towards him and how this results in changes in Golden Trio's life. What when something is accepted by the Weasleys as normal is not accepted by Ron, how does this bring about a change?

Ignorance or Realization?

Chapter Text

Chapter 4

After Ron stalks off, Molly sends Fred and George to their rooms. After closing the door, George punches Fred’s shoulder and said “What the hell were you thinking Fred?”. Fred shouts “What the hell was I thinking George? What the hell was Ron thinking saying all those things to me and Dad? I mean, has he lost his bloody mind in the first place?”. George looks at Fred and said “Fred, you bloody idiot think, among all of us who had to suffer the consequences of all those actions. Yes, Ginny was a victim as she was influenced by that diary, but what about Ron? He had to live in fear for most of the year because one of his best friends was a muggleborn. You saw Harry and Ron after Colin Creevey was petrified, they rarely left Hermione alone. One of them was always there with her and both of them with her. Ron even willingly went to the library to be with Hermione. The library, Fred. Do you seriously think that Ron would have set a foot in the library if it wasn’t for Hermione. Then that incident during Christmas time which landed Hermione in the hospital. After that, Harry and Ron both became even more paranoid. You saw Harry, Fred, he used to run from the Quidditch pitch as soon as Wood blew the last whistle, just to reach the common room in time. How much ever late in the night it was, we used to see Ron with Hermione sit near the fireplace, and not leave until Hermione left for the girl’s dorms. And did you see their expressions when Hermione was petrified? They were devastated. And we know at the end of the year, something happened to Lockhart because of Ron’s wand. Ron, Harry and Lockhart were down in the Chamber. And there was a cave in. So obviously, Ron and Harry must have been separated because of the cave in. Now imagine, how would you feel when your best friend and your sister is on the other side of the wall, and you were bloody not able to do anything about it because an idiot wizard had broken your wand? And imagine, finding out after that your bloody best friend, the first friend you made on that train, was almost bloody going to die and no one was doing anything about it?.

Fred said “But what is Dad’s fault in this? Ron knows how the Ministry treats him?”. George replies calmly “Ron has always seen Dad advocate for the Muggles and the Muggleborns. Hell, we have all seen Dad pull some bloody miracles like the Bill he passed the last summer saying that they had the right to enter the house if it has suspected Dark artifacts. This shows that Dad is not as helpless as it seems. He has the brains and guts to gun for something if he wants.”

George continues “But Dad, has not pursued anything regarding what happened to us Fred? Nor did the Ministry? It is a good question that Ron had asked Fred, if it was purebloods that had been attacked then wouldn’t the Ministry have taken the action and closed down Hogwarts? And fearing for our reputation, Dad has also not pursued any avenue of investigation to say who influenced Ginny in the first place. But is our reputation more important than finding out who did this?”.

Fred replies “You think its Malfoy, don’t you?”. George said “I think, if for once, we bloody don’t care just about ourselves and see the consequences, then maybe we can prevent something even more worse from happening. I don’t want our family to break Fred, but I am afraid, if we continue to ignore, what has happened, it can lead to just that”.

Molly flutters around the kitchen as Arthur stares at the table. Silence reigned in the kitchen, where there is noise. All the kids are in their rooms. Ron did not come down for dinner. Everyone had ate in silence aware of the lingering tension, and went up to their rooms. Arthur looks up at Molly, after feeling her squeeze his hand. He said “I failed Molls.” Molly shook her head and said “No Arthur, you did not fail in anything.” Arthur said “How could I not see, that what happened in the second year, also affected Ron? How could I have been so blind to think that only Ginny is the victim here?”. Molly sits down beside him and said “No Arthur, I have failed, I never realized that Ron had such anger in him. I always assumed that Ron is able to handle everything and accepts everything we give him.” Arthur squeezes her hand and said “You know, I never remembered Ron ever asking for anything from us. He accepted Bill’s clothes, Charlie’s wand and Percy’s rat as if they were his. And he never came and complained about Fred and George.” Molly looks down in shame.

Arthur lifts her chin and sees her eyes fill with tears. Arthur said “Hey, what’s wrong?”. Molly burst in tears and said “Its all my fault Arthur. I was so used to forgetting Ron’s likes and dislikes. I know he hates corned beef, yet I always gave him corned beef sandwiches, I know he doesn’t like Maroon, yet I always made a Maroon sweater for him. I always failed him Arthur. I never ever asked him, how his Hogwarts year was, never asked about his books, nothing. Ron always seemed so sure in taking care of himself, that I always left him alone. I never felt that he needed me Arthur. But he did need me. And when he needed me, I completely failed him.” Arthur hugs Molly tightly to himself as he goes through so many feelings. He knows somewhere, he also failed as a father. When he and Molly planned for a big family after the war, he had promised to himself that he will be there for his each and every child no matter what. And yet in Ron’s case, he and Molly failed to be there for him.

Suddenly hearing a tapping of the owl on the window, Arthur looks up and sees the owl pecking the window impatiently. Recognising the own as the Ministry Owl, Arthur opened the window. Taking the letter from the owl, and giving him some owl treats before sending him off, he opens the letter and his mouth opens in an O shape in amazement. Molly looks at him and said “What is it Arthur?”. Arthur said “You know I had registered for the lottery a month back, so I have won the lottery Molly. We have 700 Galleons.” Molly wipes her tears and said “That is wonderful Arthur. We can make a trip to Egypt and spent the summer vacation with Bill. I will inform Charlie, he can join us there. Maybe this is what we need Arthur. A break from this place for sometime. It will do the kids some good to take some much needed break.” And as Molly bustles around the kitchen, muttering to herself the preparations that is needed for the trip to Egypt, Arthur wonders whether the trip will actually erase the animosity or will it lead to more worse consequences.

Chapter 5

Ron looks on in silence as everyone around him rejoices over the fact of getting extra money to go on a trip to Egypt. Arthur noticing Ron’s silence said “Ron, aren’t you happy that we are going to visit Bill?”. Ron gives a smile and everyone relaxes thinking that Ron has gotten over his temper. But the next words, out of Ron’s mouth drops everyone’s hope. Ron said “I think it is better if we save this money instead of spending it on a useless expense.” Fred’s temper immediately flared up and he said “Oi, visiting our brother is not a useless expense.” Ron shook his head and said “No, visiting Bill is not a useless expense. But instead of spending on Bill, we can use the money to get a Mind Healer for Ginny and a new wand for me. And the rest can be saved for our future Hogwarts expenses. I am assuming visiting Bill is a more important expense than Ginny getting healed?”. Fred glares at him while Ron calmly looks back. In order to break the tension, Molly said “Ron dear, you don’t have to worry about all this. We will get you a wand before we leave. And its been a long time, since all of us has visited Bill. Don’t you think it will a wonderful idea, for Bill to spent time with all of us?”. Ron gets up and said “Of course Mom, you and Dad know better. I am the idiot child who does not know how to handle finances. You and Dad have a better idea of how to run the household. Sorry, for interrupting your important responsibilities.”

Ron stalks off before anyone could say anything. He goes and sit under the tree bordering the forest. He removes the letter he got today from Harry. Harry describes almost nothing in the letter, just stating a typical summer at the Dursleys and how he is looking forward to come to the Burrow. Ron does not like the sound of the typical summer at the Dursleys. He wonders how he is now going to bring Harry to the Burrow. He thought about taking Harry to the Egypt trip with him but nixes it immediately, as he does not even know if Harry wants to go to Egypt. Ron knew that Hermione is on a trip to France with her parents that is why she had told Ron that after 2 weeks before Harry’s birthday, he should call him to the Burrow. But now with this Egypt trip, everything is messed up. If he goes on the Egypt trip, and Harry is in trouble then how will he be able to help him? How will he be able to reach Harry in time?

Ron thinks back to the second year, the circles under Harry’s eyes. He wonders how no one ever thought to investigate the Dursleys seeing Harry has malnourished body. At the start of the year, Harry’s bones could be easily felt. It was only through constant training in Quidditch and the constant classes they had to run through that Harry started becoming hungry and eat everything on his plate. Thinking back to the second year, Ron tried to remember the name of the house elf who had come to warn Harry.

Ron said out loud “Dumpy, no,Dusty, no, Dopey, no, no, What was that name? DOBBY”. Then a voice behind him said “You called?”. Ron jumps a foot in the air and let out a shriek that he will till his dying breath deny that it was a girly shriek. Ron turns around and scrambles back seeing the house elf before him. The house elf seemed typical, with big ears, big eyes and now a cloth than looks like a shirt covering his body with a pant covering his legs. Ron fell to the ground by stumbling on a tree stump and lands on his butt. The house elf looks like he wants to help him but then tilts his head as if he does not know how. Ron gets up and wipes the dirt from his pants. Taking a deep breath, he said “Dobby?”. Dobby nods his head and said in puzzlement “That is my name. but who is you?”. Ron not knowing how to explain himself, but suddenly startles when Dobby snaps his finger now an excited gleam in his eyes, as Dobby said “You is Master Harry’s friend. Dobby saw you, when Dobby tried to stop Master Harry from going to Hogwarts. You and Master Harry was very brave going in the flying car. Dobby does not like heights. No sir, No.” And Dobby gives a shudder but then tilts his head as he said “But why is Master Harry’s friend calling Dobby?”. Ron runs a hand through his hair as an insane idea is starting to strike his mind. Harry is going to kill him however, if he goes through with this, but he could not see any other way to protect Harry.

Ron clears his throat as he said “As Harry’s friend, I wanted to, wanted to thank you for trying to warn Harry about the Chamber Of Secrets.” Dobby smiles a big smile at Ron and said “Dobby tried his best Master Friend of Harry Potter. But Dobby could not warn Master Harry properly because Dobby was tied to Lucious Malfoy’s Magic, Master Friend of Harry Potter.” Ron clears his throat and said “Just call me Ron. Umm, Dobby how did you get over here, I mean I know the whole area is warded but you were able to break through?”. Dobby nods his head and said “Master Ron is right. Master’s home is heavily warded, but Master’s magic wards does not cover other magical creatures no entry. So Dobby was able to enter.”

Ron said “So how were you able to enter Harry’s home?”. Dobby said “Dobby’s intent was never to harm Mr Harry Potter but it was to save Mr Harry Potter. Wards then did not harm Dobby.” Ron clears his throat, now praying his crazy idea will work said “So, Dobby are you working?”. Dobby shook his head and said “Dobby is searching for work, Master Ron but Dobby cannot find Masters for long. Masters and Mistresses do not want Dobby because Dobby demands pay and clothes. Dobby does not want to tie itself to a family’s secrets completely so Dobby demands clothes also. Dobby decides that until he finds a good family, Dobby will continue to demand pay and clothes.” Ron clears his throat and said “I have some pocket money with me? How does one Knut and one pair of clothes sound?”. Dobby tilts his head and looks at Ron and his voice in puzzlement, said “Why does Master Ron want to pay Dobby?”. Ron clears his throat and said “Because I want you to protect Harry.”

Dobby straightens up, hearing Ron’s words, his head held high and said “Master Harry Potter in trouble, Master Ron? Then Dobby will save him.” Ron immediately shook his head remembering Harry’s words on how Dobby always tries to save him. Ron said “No, Dobby, not save him, I mean stay with him and protect him.” Dobby sits down in front of Ron, stares at him and said “Dobby does not understand Master Ron.” Ron clears his throat again and said “So you know the amount of trouble, we have been through the past two years?” Dobby nods his head. Ron said “And I am thinking you saw the Dursley’s treatment of Harry?”. Dobby frowns and said “Dursleys very meany to Master Harry Potter. Keep on giving less food and make him sleep in that room full of junk. Master Harry’s books also hidden under that cupboard. That Dursley boy very fat. And he keeps on taunting Master Harry with Master Harry’s parents death. Does Master Ron want Dobby to teach the Dursley’s a lesson?”. Ron shouts “No, not like that Dobby. Okay give me a second. Let me gather my thoughts.” And Ron got up and paced back and forth as Dobby watches on. Ron then sat down in front of Dobby, and taking a deep breath said “Well, here’s what I want you to do Dobby. You stay with Harry, and make sure he eats proper food and he has the time to complete his homework. And you take my and my friend’s Hermione’s letters to Harry and bring Harry’s letters to me. Don’t read the letters at all Dobby. You stay with Harry, till Harry reaches Hogwarts with me and Hermione. And if Dursley boy tries to harm Harry when he is outside, you distract the Dursley boy and make sure Harry gets to his room and not by disapparating.” And if something happens to make Harry leave the Dursley’s house, then you come and inform me and Hermione immediately. And if someone attempts to harm Harry at home, then you get Harry out of that home immediately and get him here. So, is that okay with you Dobby?”.

Hermione, comes into the cottage followed by her parents. They had just finished touring the winery of the countryside. While it was a fascinating process, to learn how wine is made, but it got tiring when it came to the tasting. Knowing that her parents were a little tipsy, she said good night to them and went up to the room. And lets out a small scream seeing what is on her bed.

Hermione covers her mouth immediately after the scream seeing a creature with big ears and what looks like Ron’s shirt and pant staring at her with big eyes. Hearing the knock on the door, Hermione is going to open her mouth to answer when the creature, takes a letter out and she sees that the name on the letter said it was from Ron. Hearing the knocks on the door becoming persistent, Hermione said “It is okay Mom, just stubbed my toe.” Her mother replies back in affirmative and Hermione hears the footsteps go away. The creature on the bed stands up and bows down to the waist in front of Hermione and said “Mistress Hermione, Dobby is pleased to meet you.”

Hermione for the first time is in a loss of words. She clears her throat and said “Hi. Nice to meet you too Dobby. Hang on, Dobby, Lucious Malfoy’s house elf?”. Dobby crings but straightens himself up and said “Dobby is not belonging to Lucious Malfoy now Mistress Hermione. Dobby now belongs to Master Ron.” Hermione exclaims “What?”.
Dobby hands out the letter to Hermione and Hermione taking the letter opens it

Dear Hermione,
I know we decided that Harry can come to my place after two weeks at the Dursleys, but I just got the news that my family has won the lottery. We are planning a trip to Egypt to visit Bill and the plan is to stay there till the 2nd week of August. Knowing Harry’s luck, he is bound to either get involved in something trouble during that time even if he does not want to. So I came up with a plan to keep Harry safe. Dobby can be Harry’s what was that term you used to describe, for people guarding people, ummmm body part, no bodyguard. At least until we get to Hogwarts safely. Don’t worry about the expenses, I worked out with Dobby how to pay him. With him keeping Harry protected, we can go on our vacations peacefully and if any trouble does come, then Dobby can inform us directly, since he has the magic to do so directly.”
I am experimenting how long it takes Dobby to travel from France to the Burrow, so I hope that this idea bloody works. Send your response with Dobby. And hopefully Harry can forgive us when we meet him next.”

Regards,
Ron

Ron paces back and forth at the edge of the woods. Its been almost 45 minutes since Dobby took his letter to Hermione. Hearing the pop sound behind, Ron turns and sees Dobby standing there and looking at him with exhaustion present in his eyes. Dobby said “Master Ron, Mistress Hermione has sent a reply in this letter.” And holding out the letter, he gives it to Ron.

Hermione’s Letter

Dear Ron,
The idea of using Dobby is brilliant. I cannot imagine, the power it must have taken Dobby to travel from England to France. My watch notes the time you had given and I would say that Dobby made the journey in half an hour. You are right. We can use Dobby to protect Harry. But Ron, I don’t want you to bear the expenses of Dobby alone. I will also pay him. Ask Dobby, how does 2 Galleons sound?”.

Regards,
Hermione

Ron looks at Dobby, who is sitting under the tree, looking exhausted. Ron clears his throat, and said “ Dobby, how does 2 Galleons and 1 Knut sound?’. Dobby’s eyes widen and he said “Master Ron, please don’t increase unnecessarily. Dobby is happy with what Dobby and Master Ron decided before?”. Ron looks at the letter and frowns. But looking at Dobby, he knew, he could not treat Dobby as he was treated before. Ron said “Dobby, the Knut is from me and the 2 Galleons is from Hermione. Since you are working for both of us, isn’t it fair that we both pay you?”. Dobby looks at the floor and scratches his toe on the forest floor. Ron feels impatient but keeps silent.

Dobby said in a low voice “Dobby does not know Master Ron. Dobby hasn’t been paid before.” Ron feels himself melting hearing Dobby’s words and a sense of fierce protection overwhelms him. Ron said in a firm voice “So it is decided, I will pay 1 Knut and Hermione will pay 2 Galleons. So that is fair pay for you. Okay?”. Dobby nods his head looking at the floor. Ron clears his throat and said “You look exhausted Dobby. Why don’t you go and sleep in my room for some time? I will bring some food up after sometime and you can have dinner.”

Dobby looks at Ron now with wide eyes and said “No, No Master Ron, Dobby can feed himself Master Ron. Dobby also know how to remain hungry without feeling hunger. Dobby’s maximum hunger record is 4 days.” Ron felt sick to his stomach hearing this.

He clears his throat to control his anger and said “That’s okay, when you are working for me and Hermione, you don’t have to remain hungry and you can sleep when Harry, I and Hermione sleep also. We won’t go anywhere without you knowing. Okay”. Dobby nods his head. He points out the window, facing the broom shed, and said “That’s my room. There is a cot underneath my bed with the pillow and the blanket. Use it for sleeping. I will call you when its time for dinner.”

Dobby said “Master Ron, can Dobby ask a question?”. Ron nods his head. Dobby asked “Why does Master Ron not tell about protection for Master Harry to Master Ron’s parents. Master Ron’s parents are very skilled in magic. Then, why does not Master Ron involve them in this plan?”. Ron gets out the words that have been stuck in him for so long, he never even realized it until Dobby’s question. Ron said “I don’t trust them with Harry. That is why Dobby.”

Chapter Text

When Harry woke up in the morning, it was a normal day, for him at least. Well, if you count the horrible diet Aunt Petunia is putting everyone through, because of a stern warning from the school’s nurse about Dudley’s weight. If not taken under control, they will be forced to put him on diet throughout the school year. When Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, read the note, Uncle Vernon screamed about how Dudley is not fat but fit to be a fighter like him and Aunt Petunia cried saying that everyone is trying to make her Dudleykins look skinny.

Dudley’s tantrum could not be even counted as one of the top 10 tantrums at least according to Harry’s list. When Harry trudged up to his room after finishing breakfast in preparation to go outside to finish Aunt Petunia’s list of chores, he almost bit back a scream recognizing Dobby on his bed. Dobby smiles brightly at Harry, as Harry scrambles to lock the door before any of his relatives see him and again lock him up. As soon as the last lock is put, Harry hisses, “Dobby what are you doing here?”. Dobby smiles brightly and said “Dobby has been given the responsibility to look after Master Harry.” Harry thought’s go in the line of who in the hell is mad enough to give Dobby responsibility. Harry knew that Dobby had the tendency to hit himself when shouted on and asked “Dobby, who gave you the responsibility to look after me?”. Dobby smiled with delight and said “Master Ron and Mistress Hermione. Master Ron gave Master Harry a letter also. Here Master Harry.” Dobby held out the letter, and Harry took it with disbelief. Opening the letter, Harry continued to grit his teeth, on why the hell would Ron and Hermione come up with such a great idea, but his heart softens reading the words written.

Mate,

I know you are going to be mad seeing Dobby but hear us out. Hermione said that you will understand, but I penned down the letter in the hopes of calming you down. Look, I know that you can manage yourself, but frankly me and Hermione don’t trust the Dursleys to not put a stunt like they did last summer. Our initial plan was to call you to Burrow, two weeks after, but I got the news that we are going to Egypt to visit Bill, because Dad won the lottery in the Ministry making all of us to see Bill. It will be a one month trip, and frankly it scares both of us to think what can happen? I mean mate, you luck regarding danger tends to make it seem of making you run towards danger not away from it.
So we got Dobby, who will look after you until all three of us reach Hogwarts, safely and without a scratch in sight. Regarding payment, don’t worry about it, me and Hermione are handling it.

Take care of yourself Harry, and don’t worry, Dobby knows what to do if danger comes to you again.

Love,
Ron and Hermione
(Well just me, Ron actually)

Harry wanted to be mad, but he knew his friends and their hearts are usually in a good place. Hearing his stomach grumble, Harry groaned knowing that it won’t be till lunch for him to have something. Hearing a snap in front of him, Harry looks at Dobby in astonishment, when Dobby holds a platter of ham sandwich with fries on the side. Harry looks at Dobby in amazement and Dobby said “Don’t worry Master Harry, Master Ron and Master Hermione said to make sure that you have proper food and to take good care of you. Harry smiles tightly, thinking what the hell would good care in Dobby’s terms mean although the ham sandwich with fries does look really good.

Ron stumbles as his feet lands on the ground. Travelling through Portkey was one of his least favourite methods of wizard travel. And he often wonders, how is it to travel in an enclosed vehicle that Hermione calls an aeroplane. Seeing everyone, dust themselves off, Ron also begins to dust himself off and peers over the crows spotting his big brother with his earring.

Bill looks thoroughly like a resident of Egypt should, wearing a earring with a haircut of making his hair stand and dressed a jeans and shirt, grinning at them as he walks towards them. Everyone on seeing Bill, exclaims in delight and rush towards him. Charlie was going to arrive in the evening, through a different location.

Reaching the family, Ron was the first person Bill saw. Bill clasped a hand on Ron’s shoulder, squeezing his shoulder in acknowledgement and reaches behind sweeping Ginny up in a hug. Ginny lets out a squeak of delight, but saw that Ron gives a tight smile to Bill’s back. Her smile fades away and she squeezes her eyes shut to fight the nausea away at the thought which has been gnawing at her ever since. Bill breaks the hug and seeing Ginny’s eyes close, cups her faces in his hands and said “Her Ginny- Winny, what’s the matter?”. Arthur and Molly gather around Ginny, with Fred, George and Percy all crowding around close by, but all Ginny could see was Ron, standing a little behind Bill, looking at her with concern in his eyes yet some distance, as if he is slowly losing himself and not being a part of this family. Ginny swallows but said “Nothing Bill, just some nausea from the Portkey travel.” Everyone heaves a sigh of relief, and disperse picking up their luggage. Ron quietly sidles up beside Ginny, and asked “Are you okay Ginny?”. Her throat closed still with her fear, she nods her head. Ron nods an okay, and without her prompting takes her luggage from her walking behind Fred and George, arguing about what to do with Percy. Feeling her hand on her shoulder, she looks up at Bill. Bill is startled to see her eyes fill up and said “Hey, what’s up Ginny, why are you crying?”. Ginny hitches and said “We are losing Ron.”

Bill watches Ron after Ginny’s words and for the first time considered himself idiotic. Bill as the eldest brother of the Weasley family, always knew that he had the responsibilities of raising his brothers and sister along with his parents. When Percy, Fred and George, Ron and Ginny were small, Bill and Charlie used to end up taking care of them when Molly and Arthur were too busy with work or running a household. Even though there was always financial concerns, but Bill and Charlie always made sure that those concerns were not felt by their younger brothers and sisters. Yet, in the case of Ron, they always end up failing.

Even when Bill was in Hogwarts, and came to the Burrow for the summer vacations, Ron always ended up demanding the least of time. He never played pranks for attention like Fred and George, whined like Ginny for attention or came to him for doubts like Percy. For Ron, Bill always remembered that he used to be able to entertain himself. From early on, it seemed that Ron always made himself be as silent as possible to not cause trouble for his parents and his brothers. The only major incident of Ron’s tantrums was two as far as Bill remembered. One, when Ron’s teddy bear turned into a spider by the twins. Bill knew it wasn’t the spider itself that caused the fear, but the sudden change. When the twins changed the teddy bear into a spider, Ron was still at the age where he was not able to comprehend the use of magic, and that sudden change terrified him greatly.

Bill was able to calm Ron down, but after that incident was never able to quell the fear of Ron with spiders. Whenever, Ron used to see a spider then, he would clam up his body stiff, his breath coming in shorts and his posture that of hiding oneself. The next incident, Bill wasn’t there but he heard it later from Charlie.

Charlie had told Bill about how Ginny had by mistakenly broke his Chudley Cannons figure and Molly was not able to fix it, even though she fixed Ginny’s Holyhead Harpies figure. Later on, Ron refused to share any of his toys with Ginny, Fred and George and Percy. When Fred and George pranked him with support from Ginny for not sharing, he went to complain to Molly. Molly supported Fred, George and Ginny and scolded Ron for not sharing his things. That was the time when Ron’s first accidental burst of magic happened as he shouted at Molly for always give him old things and wished that she had aborted him when she found out he was a boy and not a girl. Everyone was shocked at Ron’s words and in that shock, Ron ran away. For the next two days, they had searched the entire forest for Ron, but could not find him. And after two days, Ron walked back into the Burrow as if nothing happened even with bruises and scratches on the feet. He never said, where he was for the two days and they never asked after that one time. Molly paid attention to Ron for one week, but after Ron showed no indication of doing the same thing again, Molly started paying more attention to Ginny again.

Bill couldn’t blame his parents for wanting a big family especially after the war, but he had often wondered whether having a big family was the right choice to make just to fill the hole of family in his parent’s lives. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door and hearing the word enter, he enters seeing his parents arrange their things in the hotel room. Molly smiles and said “Bill did you need anything?”. Bill said “Mom, what is going on with Ron?”. Arthur and Molly stiffen hearing the question.

Notes:

So, A Very Happy New Year to All Of You. Hope you all have a prosperous year, and as a world, we will be able to move on from this pandemic.

So, A note regarding Bill. Bill, as a character always seemed to me as the most level-headed character and the most underused also. I mean, he is the eldest child of the Weasley Family, yet he has no clue on what is going on in Ron's life and just joins the war blindly. Did not mesh for me. And what about the finances? Bill's finances seem to be strong enough to at least take on the financial burden of the family, yet the Weasley family is still struggling to make the ends meet. Ya, not going to agree with that also. For a family that claims, to be so together, it has often been portrayed in the books as if they are living separate lives coming together only when there is danger. So, I am going to make the two eldest brothers of the Weasley family, more involved with the family as a result also more involved with Ron.

Chapter 7: Chapter 7

Summary:

Bill makes a backfired choice and Ron makes a decision that has disastrous consequences.

Chapter Text

Arthur and Molly stiffen on hearing the question from Bill’s mouth. Arthur turns to face Bill while Molly continues to fold the clothes laid out. Bill has often seen his parents do such a thing where Arthur would step forward to deal with whatever crisis and Molly takes a step back when both are in the room.
Bill steps around Arthur and said to Molly “No, Mom you have been with both Ron and Ginny, you tell me what is going on with Ron?”. Molly hesitates looking at Arthur and said

“Nothing is wrong Bill, Ron is just fine.” Bill looks at Arthur who is unsure about Molly’s reply and said “Just fine, if Ron is just fine then why Ginny is scared out of her mind about losing Ron?”. Molly gasps and said “We are not going to lose Ron Bill. Like I said, everything is just fine.” Arthur looking doubtful said “Molly maybe Bill is right.” Molly and Bill look at him in shock. Arthur rubs a hand over his face and said “Look, The Chamber of Secrets traumatized Ginny but it also traumatized Ron. He was down there with Harry to save Ginny but he got stuck behind because of a landslide and well Harry had to go on his own.” Bill gasps and said “Ron went down to this Chamber of Secrets? What the hell was he thinking? There were teachers, you are supposed to go to help for a teacher.” Arthur shrugs his shoulder and said “It seems they went to their Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher but we don’t know what happened. We tried to get the whole story out of them, but they just said that Lockhart got blasted with Ron’s wand. How and why he had Ron’s wand, they are still not answering.”

Bill looks at Molly and said “And he did not say anything to you, Mom? Ron always comes to tell you everything Mom.” Molly shook her head and said “Since he has started Hogwarts, he has hardly shared anything with me Bill. In fact, half the time, I get the news about him from Percy and sometimes George sends a letter. But since he has started Hogwarts, he has never sent a letter to home.”

Bill is now feeling overwhelmed. His 13 year old brother, is not supposed to be involved with saving anyone. He should be involved in Quidditch, something silly like Fred and George and even like Percy. Hearing a sound, he turns to see Ginny enter. Molly goes towards her and starts fussing about her roaming outside without a coat on since it is cold during the Egyptian nights.

Stepping outside, he takes a deep breath of the air filled with sand particles and adventure. When Bill started working in Egypt, he loved it and still loves it. Here, there was no assumptions about him being a Weasley and there was only the expectation to give his best. Bill never realized how freeing it is to be removed from the burden of the family name, until he was finally there. Yet, he knew how all his brothers had always felt. Being one of the pure blooded families, the tag of blood traitor had brought its own set of troubles both in Hogwarts and outside in the wizarding world. If they had the wealth, even then it was fine since one of the hallmarks of status like money, but during the war the death eaters had made his grandfather empty their vaults with the threat of the families’ lives hanging over their heads. And till now, they were not able to get a single cent back, because the ministry had refused to believe their tale and just suggested that their grandfather had spent the money away in gambling.
Bill snorts, thinking about their grandfather. His dad resembles his grandfather in terms of his family values and his heart but when it came to money matters, he used to fall short. And given that one of the death eaters who had falsified the documents, that his grandfather had a debt and they paid it back, was Malfoy, then no wonder there is enmity between them.

Reaching his tent, he ducked underneath seeing Ron stretch out reading a book of chess. Most people think that his brother does not like books, but that is not true. What was true, is that Ron’s has a capacity to strategize and analyse the knowledge at a greater extent than anyone of them. If you ask him the calculations at the end of the day sales, Ron is able to calculate just as quickly as one of the calculators that Bill had bought for Arthur. But because of this capacity, Ron often ends up being restless as a result of which he does not bother completing his work. Arthur and Molly had thought to take him to a Mind Healer to gauge his capacity but the Ministry was not willing to cover their medical expenses.

Bill stops at Ron’s bedside and nudge his foot. Ron looks up at him in annoyance and said “What?”. Bill said “Fancy a night out? Just you and me.” Ron’s eyes lit up and Bill feels a pang as he could not remember the last time, he and Ron had a night out. For every brother that came, Bill had always sworn to himself, that he as the eldest make sure no one feels as if they had to prove something. Yet, by the time Ron came, Bill was so caught up in his Hogwarts education that when he was only able to pay attention to Ron during the summer holidays. Ginny was small and loud when expressing her displeasure so he and Ron devised a nightly activity just for the two of them. Their night out consisted of butterbeer, chocolate frogs and Bertie Bott’s every flavor beans and they would point out to the stars and imagine what it would be like. Bill remembers how, he shared his aspirations to being a curse broker for the first time with Ron and the only question Ron ever asked him when he said the first time was when he was going to do it?. Never questioned, never berated him for the choices he made.

Bill knew Ron saw him and Charlie as his heroes, and many a time Bill took advantage of that fact. But Ron was never blind to his faults either.
All these thoughts ran through his head, when he felt a tap on his shoulder and sees Ron shouldering a pack containing everything with a bright smile on his face saying “I am ready.”

As they both step outside, Bill sees Fred and George walking with Ginny and Percy. Feeling a tug on his arm, Ron said “Don’t tell them Bill.” Bill looks at him in confusion. Going to question, what not to tell them, he hears Fred said “Oye, what’s going on?”. Bill explains what he and Ron was going to do. Everyone’s face light up on hearing it. Ginny face shows excitement after a long time. After they scamper off, to get more food for the night out, Bill turns to face Ron and is startled to see the disappointed expression on his face.
Sadness evident in his voice, Ron said “Why did you tell them? It was supposed to be just you and me Bill.” He said “Ron, come one we all can spent time together without Mom and Dad. I will even tell the stories about what curses I have learnt. You can sit beside me also Ron. It will be a sibling night out. Wont’ that be fun.” Ron turns back towards the tent and said “You all go, I am tired. Its been a long way from England.”

Bill said defensively “Come one, Ron I barely get the time to spent with any of you. Come and enjoy.” Ron said “And I never ever saw you Bill. So it won’t make a difference if I don’t spent time even now. I will be fine.” And he goes back inside the tent leaving a heavy feeling of dread in Bill.

In the dead of night, Dobby sneaks into the kitchen, to prepared food for Master Harry. His nose wrinkles in disgust, as he wonders about the big fat oaf, his oaf son and Harry’s Aunt and how small they are feeding Master Harry. Master Ron and Mistress Hermione will be most displeased hearing about this. Dobby nods his head in acceptance of reporting all this to Master Ron. He will make sure Master Harry will eat properly. Till then Dobby will make sure that Master Harry has good food. He is very thin even thinner than Master Draco. Dobby feels a pang in his chest for Master Draco. Master Draco was a kind person. He never punished Dobby very much, only when he wants to show his father that he is very strong. Dobby could not understand the difference in behaviour displayed by Master Draco at home or at school. At home, only former mistress Narcissa used to talk with master Draco, about his school. Master Lucious used to just ask him about his grades, that’s it. Dobby never understood, why Master Draco strive to please Master Lucious. He hoped Master Draco is having a proper sleep without Dobby.

Hearing a noise, Dobby snaps his fingers and makes himself invisible. The noise gradually forms into footsteps and that big oaf, and his wife enter and sit on that comfy chair. The big oaf said “Are you sure?”. Master Harry’s aunt said “Dumbledore said that Sirius Black will be dangerous. And now he has escaped and no one knows how. The letter said that it is important that we keep Harry close to us as much as possible. What do we do Vernon?”. Big oaf snorts “I am not going to listen to a word that lunatic headmaster said. I don’t want that boy anywhere near the house. Let him continue avoiding. We won’t tell him anything.” Harry’s aunt whispers “But what if he is really dangerous? And he comes to kill Harry.” The smile that big oaf gives makes chills run down, Dobby’s body as he said “Then I hope to god he succeeds. I will do anything to make sure that blight is no more part of our lives.” And no protest was heard from Master’s Harry aunt.

Ron feels something tapping his face and hits the hand away, turning to the other side. He does not want to talk to anyone, why won’t they understand. But he continues to feel the tap on his face. Feeling irritated, he opened his eyes and jumps back seeing Dobby’s face so close to his own as he whispers “Master Ron.” Ron immediately looks to the bed beside him, to see Bill is still fast asleep. Seeing Dobby opening his mouth to speak, Ron quickly shushes him and gestures him to go outside. Dobby nods his head, his grave expression apparent and Ron wearing his coat quickly follows him. Steeping outside the tent, Ron takes him a little further away and asked “Dobby, why are you here? Is everything okay?”. Dobby shook his head and quickly recounted what he heard from Master Harry’s Uncle and Aunt.

Ron’s face quickly paled and he sat down heavily. Sirius Black escaped. Just one year, one year they wished for no trouble but it looked like a self fulfilling prophecy always. And what the hell is his Uncle and Aunt thinking? They would not even attempt to protect Harry. Dobby seats down as Ron jumps back and paces up and down thinking what to do next. His next thought is inform Hermione, but Ron knew that the journey that Dobby took now, would have exhausted his magic. He would only have enough for one more journey and it is important to get back to Harry. Considering, his Uncle and Aunt wont’ do anything, it is important to think again what to do, if Black reached there.
Suddenly, an idea forms in Ron’s head, it is a risky idea but something that would be worth to follow. And he will be in big trouble with everyone around him. But no one is there to protect Harry, and Harry has the tendency to believe that he should face all the dangers along. Even in his first and second year, Harry always ended up facing danger with no help from anyone around him. But this cannot happen again, it has to stop. Someone has to take some responsibility. Ron then looks at Dobby and said “Dobby, I have some work for you to do.”

Harry slowly shuffled, feeling himself getting restless. He shuffled around turning to get into a better position to sleep , when suddenly the hair in his arms stood up and he could feel someone in the room. Harry instinctively knew that it is not Dobby and gropes for the wand hidden under his pillow. As soon as the footstep is kept on the creaky floorboard, beside the bed, Harry turns around and immediately froze. Ron sheepishly smiled at him and said “Hey mate.”

Summary:

Confrontation with the Dursleys and what do the Weasley's Find?

Chapter Text

Ron for a moment wished he had Colin Creevey’s camera to capture Harry’s expression. Harry stares back at him, his hair still in the morning mess, signs of drool present on the side of the mouth. Yet an alertness was present in the steady hand pointing the wand at him. Ron holds his hand out in a gesture and said “Mate, you may want to lower your wand now.” Harry snaps out of shock and jumps out of bed, standing in front of Ron. He looks up and down, to see a bag seating near Ron’s leg with a rolled-up mattress beside it. Ron was still dressed in clothes that seemed for hot weather but with a jacket thrown on top of it. Harry immediately opened his mouth but Ron put a finger on his lips pointing to the door. Harry then whispers screamed “What are you doing here?”. Ron looks at him with a “duh” expression and said “What would I look like, I am doing here? I am here to get you out.” Harry stared back in puzzlement and said “But Dursley’s didn’t lock me up this time. In fact, I think their only crime as been that diet that Aunt Petunia is forcing upon all of us.”

Ron sometimes felt like hitting his head or smacking someone’s head against the wall. Harry said in such a matter-of-fact manner, as if he could not think of any other reason that someone would come for him. Taking a deep breath and remembering Hermione’s words of not scaring Harry, Ron said “Mate, I know. But I didn’t think that you would be so attached to the Dursleys to endure their diet plan. That’s okay, I will go back.” As expected, Harry wrinkled his nose and screamed his disagreement. This time, his voice was loud enough, that Ron winced. Harry flinched and shrugged in apology. Next moment, both of them jumped as there was constant knocking on the door and Uncle Vernon’s voice said “Boy, what is going on? Haven’t I told you to keep your yap shut at night?”. Harry looks at Ron with desperation in his eyes and said “You have to leave.” But Ron just shook his head and turned to face the door. Harry could not help but notice, how Ron positioned himself in front of him and his wand was already present in his hand.

The door finally opened, revealing Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley standing behind them. On seeing Ron, Uncle Vernon expression became red in colour remembering how Ron helped Harry escape from that very room. Aunt Petunia let out a gasp, seeing Ron and Harry standing there. Uncle Vernon screamed “Boy, didn’t I tell you no more freaks this summer?”. The next instant, all Dursley family members took a step back in fright, as 2 wands pointed at them, with no hesitation. Ron said “Call Harry a freak, and I will see to it that you will be the one who suffers.” Harry in turn said “Call Ron a freak and I will bring Dudley’s tail back.”

Uncle Vernon, licked his lips mustering his bravado and said “You cannot perform magic outside school. Its forbidden.” And the next instant, his bravado fails as both Ron and Harry’s eyebrows raise up and they gave him an identical smile which promised nothing good. Ron sweetly said “Did you hear Harry? He thinks magic outside school is forbidden. He believes, we follow rules. How many rules did we follow in these 2 years Harry?”. Harry looks as if he is in deep thought “I believe only one rule Ron. The rule is never back down when there is trouble. Looks to me, there is trouble Ron, should we back down?”. Dudley whimpers and Aunt Petunia hugs him a little tightly to herself.

Ron continued as if he didn’t notice the Dursley’s reactions “I believe Harry, this is enough for now. Hermione will murder us if she misses all the fun. And I do not want any more of her lectures. Why don’t you pack up? We have a trip to make.” Harry nods his head and indicates that the Dursleys go out of the room. He looks at Uncle Vernon and silently puts his hand out. Uncle Vernon first opens his mouth, but seeing Ron’s wand, he shuts it and takes out the key. Ron guides them out of the room and into the master bedroom. Hearing Harry go down, Ron knew that he would take the time, to get his things. This gave Ron plenty of time to speak with the Dursleys. He looks straight at Uncle Vernon and said “It seems that you have made plans to remove Harry from your life by colluding with Sirius Black.” Vernon and Petunia’s eyes widen as they realize what Ron meant.

As if he is just holding a conversation, Ron said “You know my family has always told me that Muggles are the luckiest, because what they achieve is made of their efforts and hard work. But I am sure my family will agree when I share with them, that muggles have one common instinct with us. That they have the capacity to plan the murder of their nephew by not taking the measures needed to protect him. I wonder what would Dumbledore say when he finds out that you have been deliberately sending Harry out to be murdered by a mad man. A man who was responsible not only the murder of your sister and her husband but also of 12 other muggles?” Ron noticed that Dudley looked shocked at his parents and felt slight relief at the fact that Harry’s cousin was not involved in this.

Uncle Vernon spluttered out and said “We never asked for Harry. He was saddled upon us. We have to deal with that freak for 13 years….” But before the next words came out, Ron’s wand points at Vernon’s face. Petunia clutched Vernon’s arms begging him to stop. Dudley’s voice seemed to dry out, but taking a deep breath, he said “Please, they are my family.” Ron looks at Dudley and for the first time, Dudley noticed the sadness in Ron’s eyes, not for himself but for his cousin. Ron said to Dudley “So is Harry.”

Harry calls out “Ron, I am packed. Can we leave now?”. Ron looks back at the Dursleys and said “Any moment, they will come and ask where is Harry. You will just tell them, that Harry is with me and he is safe. I will contact them, when I have assured that.” All the Dursley’s nodded their head mutely. Ron lowers his wand and closes the door.
Coming down the stairs, he smiles as Harry looks at him speculatively. Ron asked “What?”. Harry asked “What did you say to my uncle and aunt?”. Ron smiled and said “That Chudley Cannons will reach the Quidditch finals this year.” Harry rolled his eyes and Ron could see from his expression, that Harry was just humouring him. Next moment, Harry became serious and asked “Where are we going to go?”. Ron just said “Somewhere that will be safe for you.”

Fred and George tried not to make any noise, as they entered the tent. They slowly creep towards the slumbering lump and is going to take the blanket, when their hand is held. They look up to see Bill and Charlie looking furiously at them. They turn back to see Percy and Ginny also standing behind them with a furious expression. Ginny whispered “What are you doing?” And Percy added “What are you holding?”. Both Fred and George reveal, their hands showing miniature figures of spiders. Charlie thumped both of their heads and said “Are you insane? Do you want to scare Ron?” Fred said “We just wanted him to stop sulking.” Bill said “And when he gets furious, then what will you do?” Fred rolls his eyes and said “Come on, its Ron. He is never angry for so long.” Ginny whisper screamed “And you think he will forgive you like the last time? He is not a little kid anymore.”

The tent flap opens and Arthur enters. Looking at everyone in the tent, he said “What is going on?”. Everyone whispers screamed and Arthur raises his hand in a stop signal. Everyone stops at once. Arthur said “Take it outside, we will sort it out. Its already lunchtime. Your Mom is waiting.” Everyone is going to walk, when Bill said “One second, lets just ask Ron if he is coming for lunch. Mom said that he did not have anything in the morning also.” Arthur nods his head and everyone turns to at least look at Ron’s face.
Bill called softly “Ron, Ron wake-up.” But seeing no reaction from the blanket, Bill let out a hand to touch his brother’s shoulder. Suddenly the blanket moved startling everyone and it opened revealing a being with pointed ears and small size, staring at them rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He looks at them and said “Hello, Dobby iz sorry that, Dobby feel asleep. Master Ron said that Dobby could rest in his bed, but Dobby did not intend to fall asleep for so long.” Everyone just looks at him with no thought in their mind except one. Where is Ron?

Chapter 9: The Escape

Where do Ron and Harry go?

Chapter Text

Ron and Harry drag their bags down the street. Standing on the footpath, Harry looks at Ron and asks, "What's the plan?" Ron shrugged and said "Well, I kind of thought only till this part. I did not plan ahead." Harry looks at him in shock and closes his eyes taking a deep breath. Ron always had that tendency. He takes impulsive decisions and forgets to plan the next step. Or he carefully strategizes and accounts for every possibility. But there is always a reason behind his actions.

Harry asks "What's going on Ron? I was fine at the Dursleys. Dobby was tending to me and frankly making really good food. I was not getting starved also. Dudley was also not bothering me. So why the sudden change in plan? You know that I could have managed for the next one month, right?" Ron became serious and says "Yeah, but that was before Sirius Black came into the picture." Harry stares at him blankly and asks "Who?"

Ron stands in the middle of the road and takes his wand out sticking it in the middle of the road. The street was empty and the next second, a bus appeared in the middle of the road. Harry stares at the bus open mouthed until Ron says, "Come on". The door opens but before the conductor could say anything, Ron says "Take us to Behemoth street." The conductor nodded his head and stepped aside letting Ron and Harry hustle in with their luggage. Sitting themselves on the seats, Ron looked around, his eyes now hyperalert. Feeling his paranoia, Harry also became hyperaware of his surroundings, keeping his eyes peeled for anyone suspicious.

The bus started and Harry had to hold on to the iron stand to prevent being thrown to the back of the bus. Ron was seated comfortably, showing his expertise in the bus travel. Harry glares at him while Ron smirks. Before long, the conductor calls out their destination and they step down with their luggage. The second their luggage touched the ground, the bus disappeared leaving no trace of it being there in the first place. Harry looked around and asks, "Where are we?" Ron points to a house right in front of them and says, "Hermione's place."

In Egypt,

The Weasleys stare at Dobby and in the next second there was complete chaos. Bill tried to question Dobby, but Fred and George were making over huge ruckus over what they viewed was a prank from Ron. Ginny was standing in the corner frightened, while Arthur and Charlie tried to corral everyone. Molly came into the tent to see what the noise was. Seeing that situation was out of control, Bill blew a huge whistle causing everyone to settle down. He looks at Dobby and asks, "Where is Ron?"

Dobby straightens himself out and says "Master Ron says not to tell. It is for Master Harry's safety." Molly shouts "We command you to tell us. We are your masters." Dobby stares defiantly at Molly and replies "You is not my mistress. Master Ron and Mistress Hermione are my masters. I follow their orders only." Molly is going to hurl herself at Dobby to wring his neck but Arthur catches her around the waist. Bill closes his eyes and curses himself for enlightening Ron last night about elf magic. When Ron came to him, he thought it was just curiosity because of what happened in the second year. But now he knows that Ron was preparing his strategy on how to use Dobby.

Bill looks at Dobby and says calmly "We are Ron's family. We care for him. Right now, he and Harry might be in danger. Until we know where they are, we can't protect them." Dobby nods sagely and says "Dobby understands what Master Ron's elder brother is saying but Dobby has orders. No telling anyone until Master Ron and Master Harry get to safety." Molly looks at Arthur in helplessness.

Dobby straightens up the next second, simply saying "Master Ron is calling." And with a snap of his fingers, he disappeared from the tent without a trace.

Mr. and Mrs. Granger look at each other in puzzlement, as their intelligent daughter was even more energetic at night. She was barely able to stay still on her seat in anticipation, as she keeps checking the streets to see if they have reached closer to home through the taxi window. Before Mr. Granger could say anything, their taxi reaches in front of their house. Hermione jumps out of the taxi with a squeal of delight as the adult Grangers stare in shock at the two boys standing on their doorstep with their luggage and hugging Hermione.

Chapter 10: The Reaction

Summary:

How do the parent Grangers react?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Hermione, Ron and Harry stand in the middle of the Granger living room. While Hermione remained calm, comfortable over her parent's confusion, Ron and Harry were shuffling their feet. Harry whispers to Ron "This was a bad plan." Ron whispers back "This was the only plan. There was no other way." Mr. Granger after discussion with his wife, clears his throat and straightens his shoulders under the stares of 3 nervous children.

He said "While I understand the urgency you took Harry from his home Ron; I still do not know the reason behind it. Hermione also is not able to confirm anything. So why don't you tell me what happened that made you worried for Ron's safety and bring him here?" Ron stares open mouthed at Mr. Granger. For the first time, someone has asked Ron's opinion about his decision. Not even in his family, Ron's opinion usually counts. They brush it off saying that it was pointless, or they dismiss it as childish. Feeling the importance of his explanation, Ron said "Well Mr. Granger, it started with Dobby."

The next second, the air was interrupted with a crack, and everyone yelled on seeing a small elfin creature with huge ears stand in front of them. Looking at Ron, Dobby said "Master Ron called." Ron said to himself "I have got to revise the rules of elfin magic." While Hermione and Harry were not surprised, Mr. and Mrs. Granger were shocked to see the small creature. Dobby turned around and on seeing the parents, bowed saying "Mistress Hermione's parents, Welcome back. Dobby will get right to cleaning the house. Dobby is sorry, to miss your entry. Dobby would have prepared snacks after your return home. Dobby will just clean your bedrooms in one minute." And with a crack of his fingers, he disappeared but not before Hermione said in fact yelled "No touching my desk Dobby. I have arranged the books chronologically. They cannot be disturbed." Everyone now stares at Hermione in surprise. Hermione shrugs her shoulder and says "What, I value his work. And you do admit, he does clean very nicely."

Dobby yells from the upstairs bedroom "Thank you for the compliment, Mistress Hermione." Hermione yells back "Welcome Dobby." Mr. and Mrs. Granger sat down on the sofa weary and confused. When they found out that their daughter was magical, they were excited at first because it finally explained all of their confusing things that their daughter does. Then when they realized that they are most likely going to be kept out of this world, they made sure to take every precaution, so that their daughter know that they will be there for her. At first Hermione's letter was full of the detailed history of Hogwarts, but by the midterm of her first year, her letters barely covered the details other than her classes. That struck them first as suspicious, but they wrote it off as teenage years. In the 2nd year, they were horrified to find out their daughter was petrified for half of her year, but the school authorities did not even bother to inform them. When they wrote to the Headmistress about this, she duly assured them of the school's safety and that because they were Muggles, they were likely to be kept out of loop over a few things.

Even when they made Hermione sit down and asked her to explain what happened over the last 2 years, she was resistant. She played off the stories as if they were just magical accidents. But looking at her two friends, sitting her with their things packed in the middle of the night, with no forewarning, the Grangers were beginning to realize that their daughter may be in far greater danger than they know. And now, if the kids were worried about the safety, that they were willing to take a change on the Muggle's house for it, then the danger maybe more serious than imagined. Making the kids sit down on the sofa, the Granger couple looked at each other. The silent agreement in both of their eyes, was the signal that it is time to remove the blindfold of their eyes. Looking at the children, they singled out Ron knowing that he will be the most likely to answer. Mrs Granger asked in a soft voice "Ron dear, please tell what has happened in the last 2 years that was so serious that you haven't even reached out to any adults in your own life and instead risked trusting us to protect the 3 of you?"

Notes:

So, it occurred to me that no parent would want to keep their child in school, after finding out that they were petrified for 6 months out of an entire year. Yet, the Grangers continued to send Hermione to Hogwarts, risking her safety every year which really doesn't make sense when it comes to parenting. So either Hermione hid information which is fine, but what about the time when exams were cancelled in the second year? How would Hermione explain that to her parents?

So I am making the Grangers the first responsible adults in the Golden Trio's lives. Let's see how that works out.

Thank you for your comments. I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Chapter 11: Dawning Realizations

Summary:

The continuing education of the wizarding world.

Chapter Text

Hermione, Ron and Harry stare at Mr. and Mrs. Granger nervously. To be honest, for the first time the 3 of them have no clue when it comes to these 2 adult's reactions. Even as their daughter, Hermione was able to categorize her parent's facial expressions based on the various twitches, tics they show. But none of the tics, twitches or any other identifying features were present now on her parents. It was as if they turned to statue, on hearing all 3 of their descriptions of the last 2 years.

Ron glances at Harry and Hermione from the corner of his eyes and sees the same confusion he feels mirrored on their faces. Even Hermione who was usually all intelligent looks absolutely clueless when it comes to her parents. All 3 flinch when Mr. Granger gets up and starts pacing from one end of the living room to another. Seeing Hermione's expression turn pale, Harry and Ron understood that the pacing was a very bad sign. Mrs. Granger looks to be taking a couple of deep breaths as if she was trying to bring her feelings under control. Finally, she says "Hermione, why did you not tell any of this to us as soon as it happened?" Hermione and Ron gulps at the voice tone while Harry looks on confused. The tone was the Mom tone, and it was a sign that a significant doom is going to fall upon the 3 of them. Scrambling on how to justify her actions, Hermione says "Mom, we were able to handle it. And even Dumbledore said that we did good...." Mr. Granger shouted, "SO IS DUMBLEDORE's WORD MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR PARENTS, HERMIONE JEAN GRANGER?" Hermione flinched while Ron and Harry turned furious glances at Mr Granger. Seeing everyone's glare and hearing a pop sound behind him, Mr. Granger took a couple of deep breaths, to calm himself down but was unable to find the peace. His little girl, the one which his wife and he nurtured and encouraged, was facing so many dangers in an unknown world and they had freaking no clue. They were so blinded, by the newness, by the magic, by the uniqueness, that they forgot to see the lurking danger beneath it. And because of their ignorance, not just their daughter but other children, had to suffer for it. And it isn't just Ron and Harry, but looks like there were kids like Neville also, who should have been removed from their home environment as soon as he was in danger.

But the reality of the wizarding world, is now intruding upon their lives. And in order to protect their daughter, they had to find out more. Making a decision, Mr. Granger turned to Dobby and said "Mr. Dobby, why don't you take a seat?" While the kids looked on in confusion, Mrs. Granger's eyes show a sense of dawning realization, as she understands what her husband is trying to do. Dobby sits on the tea table, confused as the kids are. Mr. Granger asks "Dobby, how long have you been working for the Malfoys?" Dobby says "All my life Sir. I been working since I born. My mother working for the Malfoys before that." Mr. Granger says, "So you know who is trustworthy in the wizarding world?" Dobby nods his head and says, "Dumbledore most trustworthy." Mr. Granger closes his eyes, at the surge of anger with that man's name. He grits his teeth and asks in a barely restrained calm voice "Other than Dumbledore, who else is trustworthy?"

Dobby thinks for a moment, going through his memories on who were the most irritating individuals, when it comes to Malfoys. There were a lot of rants in the Malfoy households that was done by Lucious Malfoy. Even Master Draco had his fair share of rants when it comes to children. Thinking back, Dobby remembered the name that used to occur in frequency second to Dumbledore. He said "Lady Augusta Longbottom."

Chapter 12: The Confrontation

Summary:

How does Augusta react?

Chapter Text

There are very few things that manage to surprise and disappoint Mrs. Augusta Longbottom. The biggest surprise was when she got the news that her son and daughter in law will never recover from the Cruciates curse. That was when her surprise turned into her biggest disappointment. People believe that her grandson Neville was often compared to her son Frank. They are right. She has often unfairly compared Neville to Frank. But it was the only way to teach the boy to stand up for himself. She was very fearful during his first 10 years, because the boy barely showed a trace of magic in him. It was only with the help of Ernie, that Augusta was able to see a modicum of magic from Neville. (She refused to consider the way the plants in the greenhouse always seems to grow faster and stronger, when tended by Neville's hands as magic.) Its just common sense that the plants will be able to survive better when taken care of. So, imagine her surprise when she got the summons from a house elf of all, who proudly declared himself to be the servant of Master Ron Weasley and Miss Hermione Granger. While the Weasleys were a known family, but the Grangers were a mysterious lot. Her surprise and confusion further deepened, when the house elf took her to a dwelling that looked like a Muggle House on a Muggle Street. She had woken Neville up and had gotten the confirmation that Ron and Hermione were indeed his batch mates.

She looked down at Neville, who was standing beside her, staring curiously at the dwelling in front of them. The house elf Dobby, seemed to have disappeared to announce their presence, because the next second the door opened, and a man in his late thirties, stepped out to greet them introducing himself as Hermione's father. Taking the both of them to the living room, Augusta felt a wary caution on seeing the air of danger all around the kids and the adults in the room. Refusing the refreshments, Augusta waited till Neville were sitting beside the 3 kids, looking as if they were chastened by something wrong.

Augusta says "I must admit Mr. and Mrs. Granger, your message got me very curious. Your house elf said that you wanted my help, to figure out the workings of the wizarding world, when it comes to children protection. But as far as I understand, you seem to have built a comfortable home environment for Hermione. So why do you want to enquire into unsuitable environments?" Mrs. Granger said "It's not for our home Lady Longbottom. It's a way to get you to come here. Actually, we needed your help with something else."

And then she began a fantastical tale of Harry Potter's introduction to magic (Shudder) via Hagrid, his first ride on the Hogwarts Express where he met Ron, Hermione and Neville. And then her astonishment grew, as she found out what happened in the 1st and 2nd year of Hogwarts, which led to the 3 kids running away for safety. Turning to look at Hermione, after the tale got over, Lady Longbottom said in a sweet poisonous manner, "Young lady, do you know that you can get 6 months of prison in medium security at Azkaban? Or that I have access to the jail in the first place?" Hermione gulps at the steely resolve and the dangerous intent in Mrs. Longbottom's voice.

Chapter 13: The Surprise

Summary:

A surprising revelation from an unexpected individual.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

For the first time, she heard her grandson say in a firm voice "Grandma, that's enough." Everyone stared at Neville in surprise whereas Neville only had eyes for his grandmother. He knew that his grandmother had the tendency to be strict with him, did not see his qualities. But over the last 2 years at Hogwarts, Neville had seen how Harry, Ron and Hermione stood up for what's right even at the cost of their own safety. They didn't have to brew the Polyjuice potion, because everyone in Gryffindor knew that the rumors about Harry weren't true. But even then, they did brew. Even though Neville felt bad that Hermione cast the Petrific Totalus curse on him, but later he found out about how the professor Quirrell was possessed by Lord Voldemort. People think that Neville is invisible, but they never realized that being invisible had its advantages. And it was an advantage, that he was there at the right moment, when Professor Dumbledore informed Professor McGonagall, what happened with Ron, Hermione and Harry.

He had visited the 3 of them in the first year, saw the scars and burns. And he realized that Hermione, Harry and Ron were in the end trying to protect all of them at their cost. There was no guarantee, in both the years, that the 3 of them would have survived. But they did survive. And during that time, Neville had grown slowly disenchanted with the adults around him, who just could not see the struggles, the nightmares, the sleepless nights, the 3 of them spent down in the common room. So, when he faced his grandmother, his patience at the end of the tether, he bit out "You weren't there when the entire school was living in fear of the Basilisk? When I send you the letter, telling you about the petrified students, instead of taking some steps to protect us, you shouted on me for being scared? You started comparing me with Dad saying how he wouldn't have been afraid in the face of danger? How could he not be afraid in the face of this? It's a fucking snake who kills with their eyes. If Harry and Ron hadn't gone down the secret chamber to save Ginny, then who knows how many families would have lost their kids. You could have lost me also. How long are you going to stay blind Grandma? I am not Dad, I get that. But how could you unsee the dangers that we all have been facing in Hogwarts for the past 2 years. None of you take any steps to protect us. It always falls up to us kids. No wonder, Voldemort could hold on to his power. If there are cowards like you, who are always going to lay down and let others walk over them, it's a wonder that it takes a baby to defeat him in the first place."

When Neville finished his rant, he realized that he was standing up, his hands fisted, his entire body language showing his defiance towards his grandmother. And his grandmother showed no reaction. She stared at him blankly, as if she was watching one of those muggle movies, that Hermione keeps talking about. Neville then looked around and saw Harry, Ron and Hermione stare at him with open mouth expressions. Ron was going to move his hands to clap, but seeing Lady Longbottom's thunderous expression, Hermione immediately put Ron's hands down. Looking at his grandmother, Neville gulped seeing the thunder now in her eyes. But the rest of her body language conveyed nothing of her emotions.

She looked at Mr. and Mrs. Granger and simply said "Well, it looks like we have a lot to talk about. Why don't you all come to our home, and we can discuss further over there. Its late, and everyone is frankly tired. There is no point in making plans in a tired manner. It's better to do it, when one has a fresh mind, so why don't we all take a day and rest? You all can join me for breakfast tomorrow. Neville let's go." And before anyone could say anything, Lady Longbottom swept away in a regal exit. Feeling a nudge from Hermione, Neville came to his sense and rushed after her, afraid that she is going to apparate without him. As they hear the popping sound, signaling the apparition, Ron said "I did not dream that Neville stood up for himself, right?" But no one could find the energy to give the answer to his question.

Notes:

Hi everyone,

So some have commented that the updates are short. Like I mentioned before, I am working within a time crunch. So either, I can give short updates but with more frequency, or long updates with less frequency.

I tried the 2nd option, but it didn't work out for me. So, I am sorry that the updates are short, but I am keeping it short for now.

Thank you all for your continuing support for the story.

The only spoiler, I can give you for further chapters, its that there is going to be a confrontation. Take a guess between whom?

See you on Monday soon.

Chapter Text

Knowing that Neville's grandmother was right, the Grangers, Ron, Dobby and Harry retired for the night. Luckily, Dobby was able to manage to get the house set up, in sometime so the Grangers didn't have to do anything else. As Mrs. Granger prepare for bed, she notices her husband staring at the wall, seemingly lost in his thoughts. She knew what he was thinking, but still felt compelled to say, "Dan, mulling over lost time does not bring it back. You were the one who always said this to me."

Mr Granger aka Dan replied, "But finding out that those who I entrusted with my precious daughter's care were incapable and incompetent about this, is going to be one of the thoughts that haunt me at night." He turned to face his wife, as she settled herself on their bed. Mrs. Granger aka Jane questions "What else are we supposed to do? We are literally flying in the blind here. We have no clue on what is going on. I feel somewhere even the kids have no idea on what to do next." Dan gave a sigh and says "Well first thing in the morning, we have to at least send Harry's owl to the Weasleys to tell them that their son is safe. Otherwise, I shudder to think of the consequences that can come on those who dare to mess with the Weasleys." Jane replies "I spoke with Ron about this. He said that there was no need to inform his family because they already knew that he was Harry Potter. And as long as he is with Harry, they don't care where he is." Dan gives a glare at Jane, even though she knows that it is not directed at her. He says "What kind of family, doesn't care when they find out that their youngest son went against a Dark Lord and barely survived? Instead, they are happy with the fact, that his house won. What kind of family would prioritize winning over safety. They should have taken him out, the moment that bloody troll entered the castle grounds."

Jane sensibly asked "And where will they put him? Come on Dan, the Weasleys are somewhere in the same position as we are. We are stuck because of ignorance, and they are stuck because of lack of resources. We do not know anyone who can give us an alternative for Hermione. Similarly, they had no alternative other than continuing to put their kids in Hogwarts because that was the only school, who was willing to offer scholarship without any conditions." Dan says "But was the scholarships without any conditions? The entire family was willing to turn a blind eye to Ron's safety because they were trusting the headmaster Professor Dumbledore. I get that Professor Dumbledore, is the man in charge, someone who is always willing and striving to work for good, but my question is whether Dumbledore is becoming someone we should fear as well. If he is willing to disregard the wizarding world's savior safety for his own benefits, how is he going to guarantee our kids safety? I think it's time, we start searching for alternatives Jane. It's not just about Hermione anymore, it's about Harry, Ron and Neville also. We have to research before we take any step of course, but I cannot blindly trust the wizarding working anymore." Jane agreed. Both the Grangers fell asleep, unaware of someone who was outside the door and heard everything about their conversation.

In the next morning,

Ron enters the kitchen, rubbing his eyes closely followed by Harry whose tousled hair and droopy eyes, confirmed that he had very good sleep last night. The Grangers were already seated on the table. Hermione and Mrs. Granger got up to arrange breakfast for Ron and Harry. Still sleepy, both of them sat on the chairs, their hands on their laps. Ron felt someone put something on his lap, in the shape of a head. Figuring it was Dobby, Ron patted his head until he heard a low growl. Looking down, he yelled in surprise and fell from his chair, his eyes wide with shock. He said "Bloody hell, why is there a Grim in the house? DOBBY."

Chapter Text

"You talk as if it's all Ron's fault. He is a 13 yr. old child for God's sake. How do you expect him to have the maturity of an adult, when you don't have the same?"

"Neville is not his father. You have to stop comparing the two, otherwise you will never realize the joy of a family member."

"What do you mean Sirius Black is good? If he is so good, why did he not set out to prove his innocence as soon as he was jailed?"

"I understand you not wanting to trust me, but I am asking you to take a big chance on me. Please do Harry and I promise that I won't let you down."

Notes:

Hi,

I know I said small updates, but I was really short of time today. So, I posted spoilers, because I wanted to hear your thoughts on where the story is heading. Looking forward to reading it.

Chapter 16: The Weasleys

Summary:

The Weasleys reactions.

Chapter Text

The Weasleys very rarely had cause to be taken seriously. Even being the sacred 28 wizarding families, didn't give the importance that was required to be taken. One of the reasons can be contributed to money and power. When the Malfoys rose to power becoming the close confidants of the current Minister of Magic, they made sure to ensure that the Weasleys were always taken as joke, never seriously when it comes to important stakes. The second reason can be taken as their thinking. They were one of the few families, who supported working alongside Muggles. No one wanted their superiority to be challenged, but the Weasleys never had any superiority to begin with. Which made them more open to alternative ways of avenues. And lastly, their blind loyalty to Dumbledore. Because for the Weasleys, once they trust someone, they trust them with full heart, mind and soul and will go to any extent to protect the ones they love even at the cost of their own self esteem.

Molly and Arthur Weasley, always thought of loyalty as one of the noblest traits that had to be embodied. Even if they are not taken seriously when it comes to money and power, but they should be taken seriously when it comes to matters of righteousness and equality. They always believed family above all, and no matter what, they lived by that motto. When Harry Potter, became Ron's best friend, they were delighted. Their son befriended the hero of their generation, someone whose stories they have told to their kids for god knows how many years. But now looking back, the Weasley parents realized that in their excitement of friendship with Harry Potter, they lost sight of one very important person: Ron.

Molly remembered the silences that Ron had after coming back to Burrow during the first year. She remembered the nightmares also, how he woke up screaming at the sound of being hit by the McGonagall's chess pieces or learning that their efforts had failed, and Voldemort reigned in the world. Some nights, it was only because of the Dreamless Sleep potion, that Ron was able to sleep. But they ignored, disregarded it as a sacrifice for the greater good. If Harry Potter was able to endure it, then why not their child? But now they realized, that maybe was not as rosy as they thought. Maybe they shouldn't have disregarded Ron's declining voice, the way silences were often heavy with depressing memories. Even with Ginny, they were able to understand, when she was on the edge of the nightmare. But with Ron, there were no signs, they could see. And that is the story Molly and Arthur are sticking with.

Fred and George were burning with twin anger. How dare does Ron try to upstage them? But behind the anger was the fear. How could Ron take such a risky step without informing any of them? Not even Bill. Bill meanwhile was pacing from one end of the room to another. His magic felt barely restrained now, and he could feel the reins of control slowly slip out of control. The magic wanted to target those who hurt his youngest brother, who forced him to take this risky step. Bill knew that his magic was attracted to danger, that is why he chose to work with goblins in dangerous tombs, to fulfill his craving of adventure. But now, his magic was only holding on to anger as an emotion.

Looking at his parents, Bill gritted out the words with barely restrained anger "What happened recently? Something changed. And that something is related with Harry Potter. Ron wouldn't take such a step, until he felt that Harry was in danger. So, what the fuck happened that prompted Ron to take such a step?" Molly admonished Bill for his language, but Arthur looked at Bill with a serious expression and said, "Sirius Black has escaped." Gasps from all around the room. Everyone knew who Sirius Black was, except for Harry Potter. Bill closed his eyes, comprehending the possibility, he guessed "And you trusted Dumbledore's word that Harry is safe wherever he is?" His parents' guilty expression said everything. Bill for the first time realized, what the blind loyalty was causing his family. He felt like strangling someone preferably Dumbledore.

Trying to regain control of the situation, Molly said "Dumbledore has everything well in hand. Ron just overreacted; I am sure he will be back soon." Bill snorted saying "No wonder Ron overreacted. As a 13 yr. old, he has shown more maturity than any of us. How do you expect Ron as a 13 yr. old to act maturely, when you as adults are not doing the same Mom?"

Chapter 17: The Confrontation

Summary:

Bill reaches the limits of his patience.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Hearing the derision in Molly's voice, Bill felt his patience snap out. He said "Seriously Mum, you are talking about maturity. As a 13 yr. old, Ron has shown more maturity, then either of you have ever shown. For the past 2 years, my youngest brother has been literally fighting for his life and you could not see it. He sacrificed himself on a chess set with a strategy that even stumped adults double his age. You just appreciated him for beating McGonagall's game? For the last one year he has lived with fear that his best friend may end up getting petrified. And lo and behold, it did happen. What did you leave him with? A broken wand. What were you both thinking? You knew that a broken wand is not just harmful for the caster, but also on the castee. Ron could have injured himself and anyone else around him at any moment, unknowingly. And you also knew that it takes a lot of energy, to make a broken wand. Which Ron did? FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR, WITHOUT YOUR HELP. Yet you are blind to him. I don't know what happened, but ever since Ron was born, you both have always been blind about him. You cared more about Harry than your own son, Mum. And Dad, you did not even care to check if Ron was okay or not after crashing your car on The Whomping Willow. You only cared if your car could fly. Seriously, I can't believe, I am saying this. But I am honestly glad that Ron chose to run away. If there are adults like you, who claim to take care of us, but fail, who else but kids have to take up the responsibilities?"

After Bill finished his tirade, and the only sound in the room is his heaving breaths, Molly said "Charlie, take Bill out for fresh air. Maybe he will remember his manners and how to talk to his elders." Charlie quietly said "No." Everyone looked in shock at Charlie. Charlie was never the one to scream and shout. He was always the one to strategize calmly. While Bill was known for his calm temperament, even he had his moments of hot blooded Weasley temper. But never Charlie. Charlie used to always think first, strategize and execute. But there were no flaws in his plans, and it was 100% guaranteed success. If he wasn't so interested in magical creatures, everyone knew that till date, he would have become one of the closest aides of the Minister of Magic.

So, when Charlie refused to follow, it was with good reason. He said with his quiet temperament "What is going to happen, is we all are to pack our things and go back to the Burrow. Then Fred, George and Ginny, are going to sit down and give us a list of friends, Ron would have most likely contacted. We are then going to check out Hermione's place, because she is Harry and Ron's touchstone. Wherever they are, they would let her know. And then once we get that information, we are going to go and promise Ron that now no matter what happens, we will be there for him and Harry. You are going to go Amelia Bones and confess everything that happened in the second year. You are going to file a case of attempted harm against Lucious Malfoy, and under that new Bill, get a warrant for a house search. If he had one dark thing, then it is always possible, that he may have many more. Bill is going to go with you Dad, because he is the best when it comes to dark objects. Percy and I are going to search for Ron and pray to God, that when we find him, he will forgive us for all the lapses that has happened till now. Everyone packs up now." And without a second glance at his parents, Charlie and Bill led their siblings out, leaving their parents alone in the tent.

Notes:

So, I have posted an OS regarding Ron's upbringing. I don't know how much traction it will follow, but I would like to know your thoughts. You all can check out the OS, in my works.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, and please continue to do so.

Chapter 18: Siriously?

Summary:

How did Sirius find them?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Sirius was never one to believe in Fate. He felt that if everything was left up to fate, then he should have been just as evil as the rest of his no-good family members. But instead, he got sorted into Gryffindor and spent the next 7 years having some of the greatest friendships, he had ever experienced. He thought that this was the good life, the life everyone wanted, sacrificed for. And he was ready to do so. Ready to stand against the Dark Lord himself, just to ensure that his family, his people stayed safe. He thought everyone felt the same. But then he suspected the wrong person. The wrong friend. And that one night, that one assumption changed everything. Made him lose everything. Sirius never knew that if James was alive, what would he feel more betrayed about: that he failed to recognize Peter as the betrayer or that he failed to protect Harry. And Lily, God she would have been pissed off that she never saw the signs before. They all should have. When Sirius confronted Peter in the middle of the Muggle Street, he was uncaring about Peter's words, blind with rage, consumed with revenge. But you know what they say. Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. At least it made his world blind. No one believed his innocence. Like he judged Remus because of werewolf, they all judged him because of his Black family heritage. And he failed to deny it, too consumed in his guilt to make sense, to fight for himself.

That fog of guilt stayed with him for 12 years, until the picture in the Daily Prophet pierced it. Peter's face was recognizable even as a rat. He always loved to preen himself even in front of the camera. And Sirius knew that he had to get out. Because Peter was on the shoulder of Harry's best friend Ron. He knew very well that he could escape Azkaban as a dog, and so he did. The Dementors had no clue how he did so. No one did. When he reached Privet Drive, it was done luck played its part. He saw Harry and Ron get out of Petunia's house and stand on the street. He was however too far to reach them. By the time he did, they had already climbed the bus and left. But Sirius was lucky that the Daily Prophet also mentioned Harry's best friend Hermione Granger. There were not a lot of Grangers, and definitely not those who had a daughter named Hermione. Sirius tracked down the information, by using the Muggle method of investigation with yellow books. He got lucky that the 2nd house, turned out to be Hermione's. How did he know? Because he spotted Augusta apparating with what looked to be her grandson. Sirius's plan was to stay outside, but surprisingly the elf spotted him entering the boundary.

Sirius knew that elf magic had the ability to detect malicious intentions, so he disguised his intentions in the form of a dog's instinct for hunger, which was true for him. The elf misunderstood his intentions for food, and now he was staring at Harry's best friend Ron. He had heard the entire conversation of the Grangers last night, and in that moment, he thanked Lady Luck, for providing Harry with 2 sensible friends, even if one of them is looking at him horrified.

Ha, Sirius in the picture now. What do you think is going to happen next? Do share your thoughts and keep commenting.

Chapter 19: The Grim

Summary:

Confrontation between Ron and the dog.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Ron stares warily at the Grim dog who is staring up at him with what he could swear were laughing eyes. He didn't know why but he felt that if he broke the stare with the dog, he would lose. He told the dog "I am not giving you another bacon piece." The laughing eyes instantly transformed into puppy dog eyes on a dog's face. Ron shifted his gaze to see Harry's pleading ones. But this time, the pleading was not because of fear but the inability to say no to cute eyes belonging to a dog. Ron saw from the corner of his eyes, how Dobby is sneaking towards the dog. He said simply "No Dobby." Dobby looked conflicted between following Ron's order and making sure the dog is fed. The good news is that Dobby did not start hitting himself again for disobeying Ron's orders. The bad news is that Dobby added the power of his puppy eyes to Harry's and the dog's.

Ron looked at Hermione who was muffling her snorts of laughter by bending her face down the cereal bowl, so low, her nose was almost touching the cereal. Glaring Ron said, "This is your fault." Hermione narrowed her eyes at Ron, who was now so used to ignoring her narrowed eyed tempered expression, that he is almost become immune to it. Hermione said in a saccharine sweet voice "Pray tell, how this is my fault?" Harry hid his face in his bowl, while Dobby became busy cleaning the utensils with hand which could have been easily done by magic and the dog was scratching his behind. Ron said, "You were the one who allowed Dobby to keep the dog in the first place." Hermione snarked back "Have you met the dog? Who wouldn't want to keep it?" Ron looked to the dog, who had now started to stare at him again with his cute doggy eyes. Ron sighed "Fine, but just one piece of bacon. If you have more, you are going to get an upset stomach. Do you understand?" The dog seemed to look at Ron with wise eyes and nodded his head solemnly. Ron fed him the piece of bacon. After that, the dog had settled down in one corner of the room, his gaze on the 3 of them unerringly focused. It was almost as if, the dog feared that if he blinked his eyes, they would disappear. Which considering the dangers in their life recently, wasn't so far-fetched in the first place. So, Ron couldn't fault the dog for his cautious nature.

After finishing their meal, Ron looked around and finally noticed the missing adults. He asked, "Hermione where are your Mom and Dad?" Hermione casually said, "They have gone down to the Dursleys either to give a good lashing or to make sure that they are arrested." Harry and Ron screamed "What?" Hermione looked up and was caught up by the surprise present on her two best friends face. Hermione said sarcastically "What did you think was going to happen after my parents found out the incidents over the past 2 years. There is a reason that I kept it a secret from them till date. You think that they are just going to let us handle this silently. No way. My parents are going on a full bulldozer mode. You think that you saw me in bulldozer mode. But that was mild. My parents leave no rubble in their wake, only dust." Ron, Harry, Dobby and the dog's mouth were open wide on hearing her description.

The Dursleys opened the door, to see two ordinary people standing on their doorstep. The man calmly introduced himself by saying "Good morning, I am Mr. Granger. This is my wife Mrs. Granger. We are Hermione's parents. May we come inside?"

Notes:

I know, but I really wanted to build some light moments between Ron and Sirius. I always felt that Sirius would have been in a better position to understand Ron's feelings unlike anyone else.

Hope you like the chapter and do comment.

Chapter 20: The Confrontation

Summary:

What happened with the Dursleys?

Chapter Text

The Dursleys love to believe that they are very normal, thank you very much. They have built a reputation at least in their minds of good working-class family, who survives (and thrives) in their daily life. The only blight of their perfect life, again in their minds is their damn nephew belonging to that damn world. If only, their nephew was as normal as them. Inspite of them trying to stamp out that thing (it's their duty and right- in their minds at least) he was able to make it into that world. And ever since then, the Dursleys have lived in fear of anyone finding out about them. What would happen to their lives? Their reputation? Their poor Dudley. That is why they glared at the parents who have a child just like their nephew, and instead of supporting them, they are judging them for being in the wrong. Well not anymore.

Petunia hissed (literally), "I don't want to know what were you thinking coming here. We want no involvement of any part in that godforsaken world. If it was up to us, we would have stamped that thing out of that freak years ago." Vernon roared "What did you expect from that boy? Hero of the wizarding world, my foot. He is no more than a blight of existence that should have been wiped out with his parents. We are not taking part in any court case. You can count us out." The Dursleys expected the Grangers would rise to the bait. Then they would have reasonable gratification and justification to make noise. But they didn't Instead Mrs. Granger took out a simple tape recorder and stopped the record button. The Dursleys paled on hearing the playback of their voices echo in the room. Vernon tried to lunge, but Mr. Granger simply blocked him and forced him back to his seat.

Mrs. Granger took out a bunch of papers and said, "Sign this." Glaring at the papers, Petunia asked "What is this?" Mrs. Granger looked at her watch and said "You have one minute. You can waste it asking me the wrong questions. Which means we will call the police, charge you and your husband with child endangerment or you can sing the paper and we will quietly disappear into our lives while you disappear into yours". Petunia hesitated looking to choose the first option, but Vernon nudged her and gestured to sign the papers. Petunia glared but relented and signed the papers. After giving it back to Mrs. Granger, Petunia asked "What were those papers for?". Mrs. Granger replies "Access removal to Lily Evan's share of trust fund and property access, and remuneration of 150,000 as remuneration for 13 yrs. of child endangerment." The Dursleys stared at the Grangers in shock. Mrs. Granger said "Do you know what an Obscuras is Mrs. Dursley? My daughter tells me that an obscuras is someone whose magic as so suppressed that it had no choice but to eat its host's body to survive. And the final stage, is when its form is disintegrated so much, that finally it has a violent outburst, which destroys everything and everyone in its path. So, Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, by trying to stamp out Harry's magic, you had basically signed your family's death warrant."

With these parting words, the Grangers left the Dursleys dumbstruck and afraid.

Chapter 21: What's next?

Summary:

The decision

Chapter Text

Mr. and Mrs. Granger entered the household coming into the living room to find a very weird scene. Dobby was walking with his hand on his forehead and his hips moving dramatically if there was any while Ron, Harry and Hermione were in peals of laughter. Dobby said in a high-pitched voice "Where is my gel? I need my gel." Dobby said in his squeaky normal voice, "I will get the gel mistress." Dobby acted as if he was hurrying, taking a bowl. He then looked around suspiciously and immediately spit into the bowl and mixed the gel with it. All the kids along with the dog went into hysterical laughter again as Dobby acted as if he was in a hurry to reach his mistress and begins applying the gel with his spit on her face. On seeing Mr. and Mrs. Granger, Dobby stopped bringing everyone's attention to the two arrivals on the door who were silently amused.

Ron hurriedly got up from Hermione's lap blushing for unknowingly putting it in the first place. Harry straightened his hair or at least tried to. The dog calmly walked up to them, his tail wagging. They patted his head and said "We ought to think of a name for him. We can't keep calling him the dog forever." Hermione said "It could be her you know. We also have to do a vet visit, to check if she needs any vaccinations and sterilize her also, to avoid the chances of pregnancy." The dog on hearing the word sterilize, immediately went to Dobby and hid behind him, folding his legs to protect his private parts. The dog glares at Hermione. Ron chuckles and said "I think it's a definite him, Hermione. No girl would get so scared at the word sterilization." Everyone looked at Ron weirdly.

He shrugged his shoulders and said, "What Fred and George told me so." As if that always justified everything. Hermione unable to control her excitement said "Well, is it done? Can Harry live with us now." All 4 hopeful eyes looked at the Granger. But Mr. and Mrs. Granger looked at all of them with a regretful expression and says "Sorry dear, but it won't be easy to get the Dursleys to give up Harry's custody. At least not without having any backup custody arrangements or alternatives. If we do get the Dursleys to give up the custody, it is possible that Harry will end up in an orphanage or in a much worse position than before. If the Dursley's lose custody, then it will be an open war in the wizarding world to gain Harry's custody."

Chapter 22: Intermission

Summary:

Neville's perspective

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Neville knew far more than anyone thinks. That was the advantage of being clumsy. People always gave you more information than required because they wanted to caution you against potential dangers. From an early age, Neville knew that while clumsy is one of his weaknesses, but it can also turn into one of his strengths, when the situation demands it. Another advantage, Neville had was knowing the secret spots of his manor. From an early age, being bored with his loneliness, Neville developed a method of building imaginary treasure hunts where he was a hero just like his dad. This was because he understood that the only reason, his Grandmother used to always compare him with his father was because she had a deep seating resentment and anger about what happened. From what nuggets of information, he could glean no one expected the Death Eaters to attack after Voldemort was defeated the first time. Everyone expected them to either raise arms or to quietly surrender. Another reason that flamed his Grandmother's anger was the reason why his mom and dad was targeted. He had broken into his Grandmother's study and had found transcripts of the trial. The Death Eaters during that time was firmly convinced that the Dumbledore had captured Voldemort and kept him imprisoned. They had tortured his Mom and Dad for the information that his parents had denied having over and over again. But that very reasoning had confused Neville. The torture had lasted for 2 hrs. His Mom had sent the beacon of help, when she had hidden him in the cupboard and placed the charm of Disappearance on him. Why did it take over 2 hrs. for help to arrive from the Aurors? And why did the Death Eaters torture for 2 hrs. in the first place. From childhood, Neville had heard the torture stories of the Death Eaters as a cautionary tale. And the torture was always over within half an hour. Even with the earliest call, the Death Eaters always used to prefer killing than torture. So why his family was specifically targeted and tortured? And why would his Mom and Dad know where Dumbledore kept Voldemort. They had quit the Order of Phoenix before he was born. His Grandmother explained as to ensure his safety, but he could see that it was actually more.

And then came Hogwarts. When Neville met Harry for the first time, he was enamored by the boyhood stories of Harry Potter. He had always imagined Harry to be larger than life, someone who was extremely confident. But when he spent time with Harry, he realized that Harry was not that. He was much more than that. He was sensitive, known to fumble through conversations with unknown people. He was confused about the fame, as if he knew that he didn't deserve it in the first place. And he was closed off. Neville had observed, how only Ron and Hermione became Harry's closest friends, and how they always looked after Harry in their own little ways. Hermione made sure that Harry learnt by discussing with him. Neville realized that Harry preferred listening more than reading. Hermione was the first one to recognize Harry's learning strategy. And Ron, he was the Mum of Harry well pseudo-Mum. Even with his own bluntness and sometimes awkwardness, Ron made sure that Harry was never discriminated. In fact, sometimes Ron himself made foolish mistakes just so Harry's mistakes are not seen and pointed out. Neville was never close with the three of them, but he also knew that they always tried to include whenever possible. They had just an awkward way about doing it.

And then the end of the first year came, and Hermione petrified him. Neville was horrified at the same he felt betrayed. But later when Percy freed him and went to search for McGonagall, Neville never forgot the sight that greeted him when Dumbledore came to McGonagall's office followed by Ron and Hermione. Ron had a bleeding forehead, which he was trying to stem with his sweater. His hand showed marks of being bruised and bitten with something. Neville could identify the mark where the Devil Snare must have wrapped around his arm holding him tightly. Hermione's hair was messed up and the edges looked like it was burnt. She was no less hurt, compared to a lesser degree of Ron. The way she was supporting Ron showed that he took the worst of the injuries. And Harry was nowhere to be seen. Professor McGonagall rushed the both of them to the Hospital Wing, followed by an anxious Percy. Neville was rooted to the spot with the dawning realization that Hermione may have petrified him, so that he does not stand in their way of running into danger. And that's where he realized that something was going to change in his Hogwarts years.

Hermione apologized and explained why she did so. He got 10 points for standing up to friends and that led his House to winning the House cup. That should have been the end of it. It wasn't. Second year again started with a bang, with Harry and Ron getting detention for taking a flying car to Hogwarts. Their whispers in the dorm made Neville realize, that it was because a house elf had come and warned them regarding a danger coming to Hogwarts. And it did. Mrs. Norris was petrified. Ever since then, Neville saw Harry and Ron unconsciously taking the role of Hermione's bodyguards when they realized that the target was the muggleborns. Then something happened over Christmas, and Hermione ended up in the Hospital Wing. After that, all 3 of them looked graver than before. But then Hermione got petrified. Neville still remembered the expression of Harry and Ron, when they entered the common room. They were devastated. And then it ended. Ginny was rescued and everyone became better. It should have settled down. It did, but the nightmares that haunted two of his dorm mates increased. There was not a night, when Harry or Ron did not have nightmares. Ron ended up muffling his sounds into his pillow to make sure no one was disturbed, but Neville knew. Harry thrashed throughout the night not waking up until Ron shook him. Neville knew that the 2nd year, would also haunt 3 of his housemates for the rest of their lives.

And now this, Neville knew as he settled down to listen to what his Grandmother and the Grangers are discussing, that this year will also have its own set of adversities. Now whether it will result in hope or nightmares, only time will tell.

Notes:

Okay, I had a plan. But my chapter ended up too long. And I felt Neville's perspective deserved its own chapter first, because there are unanswered questions, in his past also which also shows a certain relevance. I will try to post the 2nd part as soon as possible.

Thank you and keep commenting.

Flashback

The Grangers stepped outside not at all surprised to see Augusta Longbottom standing at the end of the driveway, staring distastefully at the house. As they walk down the driveway, they hear the Dursleys stand at the doorstep. Augusta gives what looks like a deadly smile, seeing which the Dursleys quickly hurried inside. When they reached her, Augusta simply said "Shall We?" The Grangers looked at each other with hesitation for a second and then gave a firm nod to Augusta. Augusta caught both of their arms and the next second, the Grangers found themselves in the living room where the house elves weren't even surprised at the appearance of them. Augusta guided the Grangers to the chairs and herself sat down in a big fluffy armchair that had frankly seen better days.

The Grangers and Augusta sipped their drinks for a couple of seconds, letting themselves settle down. After a few minutes, Augusta said "You know, I should thank you for yesterday. It was the first time; I have seen my grandson stand up for himself and his friends." The Grangers looked at each other surprised. Augusta gives them a tight smile and said "Oh, I knew Neville has the capacity to stand up. You haven't lived this long without developing listening ears everywhere, especially at Hogwarts. I remember when I heard the first time, about Neville standing up to his housemates. I had first thought that it must have been foolishness, but then I realized that my grandson is a lot of things, but never foolish. In fact, his intelligence surpasses his observation skills. But yes, I do admit when Neville first came to me, I was very overwhelmed with grief. The Wizarding War does that. I have survived two wars Mr. and Mrs. Granger. The first one, was where Grindelwald had almost risen to power. I was just a child, but I remember the losses. Even though, it was mostly Muggle losses, but Grindelwald's ideology was slowly catching up, with all of the wizarding population big or small. My uncle almost became one of Grindelwald's followers, if it wasn't for my father threatening to cut off his inheritance. I sometimes see my father's qualities in Neville. He was a quiet man, but when he spoke his words held its meaning. I sometimes suspect that there must have been a powerful seer bloodline in our history. But yes, even though Grindelwald was defeated, his ideology lived on. And when he burst upon the scene, no one expected that Voldemort will be this ruthless. You see, Voldemort studied Grindelwald's ideology and realized that he had focused on discrimination, the feeling of unfairness. Voldemort in contrast focused on ego, on dominance. He knew that the wizarding world resented the fact that the Muggles had gone miles ahead of them, and he wanted to use that as his source of conditioning. It worked. Many of the powerful wizarding families, who wanted the times of taking advantage of Muggles supported him. And so, he burst on the scene with his group of Death Eaters. Those members were given complete freedom, to do whatever they wanted without any fear of consequences, as long as they did Voldemort's bidding. And well, when you give someone freedom with no right and wrong lines, it doesn't take long for the people to turn into monsters."

Augusta put her cup on the table, her expression now weary and showing her age. She continues "None of us expected this. Dumbledore suspected sure, but I don't think even he realized the impact, the power an ideology can have over the population. Even ordinary wizards and witches who were Muggle supporters, often questioned if Voldemort was right in his stance or not. And that questioning, became our greatest weakness. It wasn't long before people from Dumbledore's side started to spy for Voldemort and overpower us. We were losing members by thousands; they were losing only by hundreds. Some had turned due to fear, for themselves and for their families, some for the taste of power. We had trained our children for peace, not for war. And then one day, my son and James Potter's families found out about the prophecy. The prophecy that our next generation would be involved in the war. And then on Halloween night, something happened, and Voldemort disappeared. And today, we are standing here again, trying to bury our memories in coffins that should never be buried in the first place."

Augusta looks at the Grangers and says "The reason, I am giving you this information is to make sure you first understand how Harry is being perceived in the wizarding world. He is not seen as a hero, but the hero. The entire wizarding population has forgotten to see him as a child, as a person who should not be involved in the war in the first place. They have minimized his parent's sacrifice and put him on a pedestal. And that is why, if you take over Harry's custody, you will face attacks from the wizarding world. In fact, I would give you both lifespan of 6 months, before someone kills you both."

Notes:

So, I am going on a little pre planning mode here so indulge me. I have 3 possibilities, right now in front of me and I wanted to hear your thoughts. When it comes to Harry's custody, as I was writing the chapter, I realized that the politics of the Wizarding World, would inevitably need some external assistance. If I need to strengthen the Granger's foothold in the wizarding world, I need to bring in someone influential. So the 3 possibilities, in front of me are:

1. Tony Stark.
2. Nick Fury.
3. Anyone else, who you can suggest.

I am still growing the storyline, but I would really like to hear your opinions. I am leaning towards Tony Stark, because I would love to see the chaos he would inflict in the wizarding world. But should I include only him or the Avengers in general.

Do comment and share.

Chapter 24: Intermission Note

Summary:

Answering the questions.

Chapter Text

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your frank feedback in the comments. So today, I am going to answer some questions that appeared in the comments and I hope you lend me your eyes and your patience for this. I am planning to post a chapter either by tomorrow or day after.

1. Am I going to make this fanfic a crossover?

Not yet. I still haven't answered the question of Harry, Ron and Hermione's questions about who is going to be responsible. The Grangers are likely candidates, but you saw them panicking at the thought of Hermione being involved in so many adventured. What do you think will happen, if they are responsible for all 3 of them.

2. Why not keep it in the wizarding world?

Its a good idea, but it is not a direction I prefer. The reason is because I want to bring more non magical influence in the Golden Trio's lives. When I read the books now, I felt an isolationist perspective was adopted, where everything was happening within the British wizarding world only. So, the question that always appeared for me, was how Voldemort came to have more fear in everyone's hearts than even Grindelwald. So, I am going to include both non magical and magical influences in their lives.

3. What is my focus now?

My focus is in answering the question, of how adults can be responsible. I felt JKR, made a lot of adults become lax in their responsibilities. So primary focus on this fanfic, is to make the adults realize their responsibilities and plan the next steps. So, there will be a lot of useful realizations down the line, starting with the Weasleys (You know who is first?) and hopefully ending with Dumbledore.

4. When will this fanfic be completed?

Most likely by Mid-January. I will be going on a one month break due to personal reasons, but not before completing this.

5. Final Question, will Tony Stark or MCU verse be considered in the crossover?

I am still considering the possibility, but I must admit I am leaning towards the MCU verse. But there is still time for that.

Till I post next, keep commenting and wherever you are, I hope that you are living good moments.

Chapter Text

Mr. Granger put down his cup on the table and says, "That is hell of a way to say you want Harry's custody Mrs. Longbottom." Augusta shook her head and said "Believe me, when I say this, I am not interested in Harry's custody. I am sorry for insulting you and Mrs Granger, but before you take any further step, you first have to understand the importance and its danger. During Frank's time, there were only 3 families that had the strongest influence on the wizarding world: The Potters, The Blacks and The Longbottom's. When James Potter and Sirius Black became friends, it motivated and scared most of the people around them. Because friendship also increases one's magic. You have to understand the role of emotions in one's magic and society. When James and Sirius came together, fought together, they became unstoppable. No one could defeat them. But Sirius never wanted the credit. For a person who creates attention for himself, Sirius never craved it. The only reason Sirius was judged guilty was because of his family's support for the Dark Side. And then there was us. We were neutral, never involved in the war. The only reason Frank and Alice became involved with the Order of Phoenix, was because Frank's father was killed by Voldemort for refusing to fund his campaign. This was our time. Today, the only existing and legal descendant for Potter and Black family line is Harry."

Mrs. Granger said "Wait, are you telling me that Harry belongs to two wizarding houses?" Augusta shook her head and said "No Mrs. Granger. I am saying Harry comes from the bloodlines of two powerful houses. The Blacks and Potters have had long history of hatred and friendship. In fact, Harry's grandmother was a Black family member. The reason why I am giving you this dire warning is even though I do disagree with Dumbledore's actions, but I also see his position. After Voldemort disappeared, there was complete chaos everywhere. On one hand, people were celebrating already glossing over the sacrifices of James and Lily, on the other hand there were people whose grief still had not been resolved. And Harry, who was just a one-year-old child, was suddenly elevated to the hero. People did not want to understand how Voldemort disappeared. They did not want to dwell on whether he will come back. They just wanted to put their heads in the sand and celebrate their undeserved victory. Any of the wizarding families would have welcomed the opportunity to raise Harry Potter, but they would also take advantage of this opportunity, to ensure that their power standing in the wizarding world becomes stronger. Shamefully, I must say that would have included me also. I would have used my position as Harry's guardian, to ensure that the criminals of Frank and Alice are given the Dementor's Kiss. And the long-term impact, on Harry would have been catastrophic."

The Grangers now look at each other with uncertainty. They never considered the politics that came with Harry. He is a child, not a toy to be played with. But his world does not agree. They finally see Augusta's point when she gave the warning. Mr. Granger asks, "So what should be our next step?" Augusta said "Right now, assuring the children that they can trust us. Hearing their adventures over the last 2 years, I wouldn't be surprised if they have already planned the next step. And then we find allies. Allies who see Harry, Ron and Hermione as the children they deserve to be. And then we wage war."

The Grangers nodded their head, seeing no option but to go along. Augusta said, "And I have more news relating with Ron."

Flashback ends

Ron shouted "THEY WHAT?"

Chapter Text

No Weasley slept the entire night. All of them tossed and turned in their cots, worried about their youngest sibling or Ginny's case, elder sibling. Arthur had sent an alert to the Ministry, to keep an eye out for Ron in the usual places. But till now, no information has come forward. Molly facilitated between anger and embarrassment over what is happening. If anyone found out that her child ran away from home, what will they say about her, about their family? Arthur felt weary with Molly's priorities. Their child is missing, and she is concerned about their image.

In the morning, the owl came delivering the Daily Prophet. When Bill opens the paper, the front-page headlines blow his mind wide open. He shouted "DAD" Hearing his shout, all the Weasley rush to his side. Their eyes open at the headlines 'RON WEASLEY AND HARRY POTTER KIDNAPPED BY SIRIUS BLACK'. They look at each other with pale expressions and hurriedly started packing up their things. Within one hour, all of them were back at the Burrow including Bill and Charlie. Molly was hyperventilating but Arthur said "Molly, I can't go to the Ministry, if you cannot handle yourself." This statement of Arthur snapped Molly out of her panic, and she steeled herself to handle the household. After all this was their agreed upon roles. Arthur would earn and Molly would manage the household.

Reaching the Ministry, as soon as they stepped in the lobby, everyone around started gathering in a circle, surrounding Bill, Charlie and Arthur. Arthur had to deal with the consoling and assurances that Ron will be found soon. Giving everyone thanks, Arthur, Bill and Charlie managed to push themselves through the crowd and reach inside. They were directed to the office of Minister Fudge. His secretary informed the Minister who gave the permission to send them inside. Inside the office, Arthur was not at all surprised to find Lucius sitting on the armchair opposite the Minister. What was surprising to see Madam Bones staring at both of them with an annoyed expression. He had personally sent a request to her in order to find Ron.

Arthur said "Madam Bones, is it true? Did Sirius Black kidnap my son. Why wasn't I informed earlier? I had to find out from the newspaper, that my son was kidnapped. What kind of department are you running?" Bill put his hand on his father's shoulder to calm him down while Charlie acted as a guard glaring at the 3 of them. The Minister chuckled nervously, while Madam Bones glare increased by 10x intensity on the Minister and Lucius Malfoy. The Minister said "Now, now Arthur, lets calm down. Amelia is doing her best to find Harry Potter and your son." Madam Bones said, "And I would have pursued that possibility thoroughly, if Rita Skeeter hadn't published that possibility in the newspaper."

Charlie and Bill glance at each other while Arthur looks on in confusion. Bill said "Hang on, possibility. So, you are saying that my brother is not kidnapped?" Minister Fudge glances nervously at the Weasley and then looks at Lucius for guidance. Lucius clears his throat and says, "Given the evidence, the possibility has a very likelihood of being true." Madam Bones rolls her eyes and says "Unless you have personally trained as an Auror Mr. Malfoy, I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself. There is always a difference between possibility, probability and the truth. So, unless, you can spot the difference between the three, as an investigator, I suggest that you continue to only advice on matters of your expertise." Lucius narrows his eyes dangerously while the Minister snaps "Madam Bones, don't forget I can remove you from the position as Head of Auror Department."

Madam Bones looks at him calmly and says "If you want the entire Auror department to quit, sure you can absolutely do that Minister Fudge. But the point is you screwed up, first by making Rita Skeeter the writer of the article and second by giving the information to the Daily Prophet without any verification from our side."

Bill bursts out "Will someone please tell us, what the hell is going on without going around in circles? Is my brother kidnapped or not?" Madam Bones looks at the Weasleys and says "Actually William, we spoke with the Dursleys. They told that Ron had come to collect Harry at midnight. Around the same time, we also saw traces of Sirius's magic in the area. But whether they intersected or not, we do not know. It looks like Ron came to collect Harry out of own free will, but we are also considering the possibility that he was under the Imperio Curse. Again, these are all just theories."

Arthur looked at the Minister and Lucius and said in a dangerous voice "You both used my son's disappearance to further your agenda of getting Sirius Black the Dementor's Kiss?". The Minister and Lucius gulped in silence at the anger in Arthur's eyes. Charlie wiped his hands over his face, groaning "Oh, Ron is going to definitely kill us now."

Chapter 27: Ron

Summary:

Charlie is right.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Ron glares at the Daily Prophet, as if that would be enough to scorch the newspaper into pieces. Mr. and Mrs. Granger had bought the Daily Prophet from the Longbottom's manor and the glaring headlines at the front page not just shocked all of them, but also kind of stunned them into the ridiculous lengths the Ministry would go to. Hermione said "I... what.......how........I don't understand. If Sirius Black kidnapped the two of you, why wouldn't there be any trace of evidence for that?" She looks for the authors name and says "Okay, so the article is written by someone named Rita Skeeter." Ron groaned. Rita Skeeter was the devil that everyone knew to avoid. She had the tendency to twist even the most innocent of actions, into a formidable event or a very bad cause. Everyone knew to avoid her, yet no one dared to confront her. 80% of the profits of Daily Prophet, comes from Rita Skeeter's articles that is why no one dares to fire her also. Another rumor says that Rita knows the dirty secrets of all the staff members of the Daily Prophet, that is why they don't fire her. How she knows? No one knows.

Ron felt someone put their head on his lap, and he started scratching behind the ears of the dog. He knows that they have to name the dog, but right now he has no mental capacity to handle that. Harry puts his head on the table and says, "This is a mess." Ron muttered "I am going to kill my family. What sort of idiotic theory is that Sirius Black kidnapped me, when I haven't even met him. Or spoken to him. or recognize him? Hey maybe, he is on beaches and enjoying the company of naked ladies." Mrs. Granger sternly said "Ron, I will not have you using this language." Ron suitably looked chastised, while Hermione glared at him.

Mrs. Granger sat down on the opposite sofa and said "Mrs. Longbottom told that she will check with individuals who she considers as her allies. But till then, we have to be careful, not just from the Ministry, but also from Sirius Black." Harry quietly asked "Mr. Granger, did he really kill my parents?" Everyone including the dog became silent, because no one knew how to answer that question. Taking a deep breath to center himself, Mr. Granger said "Harry, to give you an honest answer, I do not know. But when we spoke to Mrs. Longbottom, she herself sounded doubtful about this possibility. But if Sirius was innocent, the question comes up about why didn't he protest his innocence and demand a trial in the first place?"

A voice from the doorway, "Because I did consider myself guilty." Shocked everyone turned around to see Sirius Black dressed in ragged clothes, standing with his hands up in a surrender gesture.

Augusta appeared in front a cottage that looked like it needed either a severe storm to blow it away or a very strong foundation to hold on to. But after all, this was a reflection of the individual residing in the cottage. Augusta was so lost in her grief, that she never reached out, even though once upon a time they were close comrades. Sometimes, when she used to get fed up with Frank's antics, he was the one she would complain to, because she knew that her son would listen to him. All of them, always did. Yet, in his hour of need, everyone abandoned him. They lost family members; he lost his entire world. Knocking on the door, Augusta heard the weary footsteps. His surprised expression, on seeing her bought a smile on her face. She greeted by saying "Hello Remus. It's been a long time."

Notes:

A Very Happy New Year to all of you. I hope wherever you are, you had a prosperous last year. And I hope that this year will be filled with wellbeing moments for you, and your dear ones.

Yes, Sirius Black has finally revealed himself. How is everyone going to respond to that now?

Chapter 28: Lupin

Summary:

Augusta and Lupin have a very long conversation.

Chapter Text

People would describe Remus as a simple man. Looking at him, no one would say he was capable of making rash decisions, making mistakes. He was elected as Prefect and it was only because of well his moon problem, that prevented him from becoming Head Boy. During the war, Remus gave his full attention, to ensure that people could be protected or at least brought back to the Light side. And then one night, everything was shattered. His entire world went up in smoke. Two of his friends were dead, and one was a traitor. From then on Remus saw everything through a numb lens. Even with the blatant discrimination in the wizarding world, against his furry problem, Remus made no noise of protest, only survived. And that was his only goal. To survive as much as he can, until he is ready to join them again. Remus couldn't even take the courage to go out to Azkaban to speak with his former best friend. And his friend's son, their first Prongslet, Remus believed that he was better off without him because he knew that he was too lost in his grief, to take good care of Harry. But he did try to at least have visitation rights. After all, as James and Lily estate executor, he needed to see if Harry was okay. But the Ministry refused to recognize the terms of James and Lily's will. They accused him of conspiring against The Boy Who Lived and was ready to put him in Azkaban. It was only with Dumbledore's interventions, that Remus was saved from being jailed. And so, he focused on survival.

But today, when Augusta Longbottom, appeared at his doorstep, Remus believed that it was because of some help he could provide or some long forgotten debt to Frank. But no, Augusta came with the story of what happened to his cub over the last 2 years. And Remus felt the wolf within him, someone who he tightly controls slowly slip out of his grasp, as he imagines Prongslet enduing so much over these 2 years. He felt Augusta, put her hand in his without any fear, and say "Remus, you need to control." Remus closed his eyes and calmed his wolf down. His wolf was calm, barely. And he knew that even he didn't have the strength to hold him back. Not after hearing what happened. Opening his eyes, he looks at Augusta and asks "No offense Lady Longbottom, but what prompted you to take action after all these years? As far as I understand, Neville is a pretty decent although nervous child." Augusta chuckles and says "True, but that nervousness, and clumsiness came because of my mistakes, Remus. Day before, I saw my grandson stand up for his friends, asking me where was I in these 2 years over what happened? And I realized that my grandson was right. It's not normal, that over these 2 years, a child is facing against the Dark Lord and barely survives. Harry's luck is going to run out sometime or other, and during that time my grandson will stand by Harry and ensure that he will give his best for even the slightest chance to win, even with guaranteed results of failure. But I am afraid also, Remus. I don't want to repeat the mistakes, that I made 12 years back. When the Dark Lord disappeared, we made the mistake of thinking that everyone would stand down. I never realized that anyone could penetrate our defenses, or even be motivated to penetrate. But someone did. And my son, his wife had to bear with the consequences. So now, I need your help, to figure out a way to make sure we are prepared. Because these children have shown that war is on the horizon. And very soon, we will be caught off-guard and wonder what happened."

Remus questions "But with these 2 years, wouldn't Dumbledore be well aware that war is on the horizon?" Augusta answers "Dumbledore would be aware, I am sure, but the question is would we believe him? We have developed the habit of putting our head in the sand. That was the only way, a misogynistic Minister like Fudge was even appointed in the first place. We want to go back to a simpler way of life, where politics are only played on the basis of whose blood is more important. And Dumbledore is not stupid. He knows that even the whisper of Voldemort being alive, would send the entire wizarding population into panic. Some will be immediately drawn to the Dark side for survival, for power. And some will struggle to stay neutral. And frankly, until Voldemort himself comes and says he is alive, none of us will believe him."

Remus then asks the dreaded question "Did Dumbledore tell Harry about the prophecy?" Augusta shook her head and Remus sighs in relief. But his relief disappeared with Augusta next words "But I wouldn't be surprised if Dumbledore is indirectly training Harry to sacrifice himself, when the time comes. That is the only reason, I can think of for Dumbledore's stupid decisions over the last 12 years." Remus looks at Augusta, and asks "What's the next step Augusta?"

Augusta took a deep breath, as if bracing herself for this and says, "Getting Sirius a trial." Remus's reaction was immediate and visceral, "NO." Augusta says "We need someone who looks at the best interests of the children. And Sirius has always been a tad emotional and dramatic, when it comes to children." Remus says "He betrayed James and Lily. Where is that in the best interests of Harry?" Augusta asks in a serious voice "Remus, I want you to clearly ask yourself, without any emotional significance and with intelligence. Do you really think that Sirius could have betrayed Lily and James? Do you really think that Sirius would put James in harms way?" Remus opens his mouth to say yes but something stops him. He remembers the times, when Sirius always made sure that he was the last one to get out, always puts himself in harms way so that James can escape. He remembers James rants over Sirius recklessness, but he also knew that Sirius just wanted to ensure that his family stays safe. And that was inevitably what James was to him, his family. And Sirius can go to any extent for his family.

But Remus couldn't entertain such thoughts, because if he did, he would drown in guilt for not believing in his friend. Remus asks "Why do you want to get Sirius a trial now, Augusta? Because he is Harry's godfather?" Augusta says "No, because I think we have missed something, or someone I should say. I know that Sirius could have betrayed James and Lily, but he couldn't have betrayed Frank and Alice. There was no way." Remus asks, "Why not?" Augusta says "Because I was the Secret Keeper for their Fidelius Charm and Peter was the secondary Secret Keeper. If it comes down to betrayal, the only people who could have betrayed was me or Peter Pettigrew."

Chapter 29: The Story

Summary:

Sirius starts explaining.

Chapter Text

Ron often considered himself as stupid. He had to be if he was not able to measure up his family’s expectations. Whenever he did something that he considered it as proud, his family always looked at him with an unsurprised expression, as if this was already done by one of his brothers. So Ron stopped believing that he could be someone worthy. But when he met Harry, the thrill of knowing Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived, quickly turned into Harry, his friend. From that moment on, Ron only cared about Harry’s life. Call him paranoid, but Ron always believed that Harry was a magnet for bad luck. Whatever circumstances Harry picked up, it somehow or the other turned against him. Well today proved him right.

Seeing Sirius Black, standing in front of them, Ron immediately stepped in front of Harry, while Hermione stepped in front of her parents, both of their wands raised. Harry had left his wand upstairs, because he felt safe. Sirius Black destroyed that notion of safety, and Ron could never forgive him for that. Dobby suddenly appeared behind Sirius and snapped his fingers. Coils of rope, curled around Sirius’s body. Not for one second, Sirius resisted looking at all of them with a calm expression. Ron and Hermione kept their wands raised until Dobby had suitably tied Sirius up. When Dobby nodded to indicate that everything was okay, Hermione lowered her wand but Ron didn’t. He glared at Sirius, for making sure his plan was a failure. Ron demanded “How did you get in? Dobby had put defenses around the house, so that no one with harmful intent could enter.”

Sirius smiles and says “True, but Dobby didn’t account for the good intentions also. That is a drawback of the boundary spell. You have to make sure, to set up an alarm first so that the individual’s presence can be recognized, and then his intentions.” Dobby closed his eyes as he realized Sirius was right. He berated himself for forgetting that part, and wanted to hit himself with something, which was a go to method. But his Master Weasley and Mistress Hermione need him now, and they also forbid him from harming himself in any form.

Sirius then says, “And regarding my intentions, well if elf magic which is the truest form of magic, sees that my intentions are not harmful, then I am sure that you can give me a chance to say my point.” Ron, Harry and Hermione look at each other. They then turn to look at Mr. and Mrs. Granger. Mr. Granger was glaring at Sirius, while Mrs. Granger looked at him with contemplation in her expression. Mrs. Granger says “You are one of the strongest families in the wizarding world, aren’t you?” Sirius grimaces but nods his head. Mrs. Granger then asks “Then how come you didn’t ask for a trial, when you knew that you were innocent? And feeling guilty is frankly not an answer.”

Sirius takes a deep breath and says “I understand you not wanting to trust me. Frankly I wouldn’t trust me also. But I swear on my magic, that whatever I say right now, in this room is the truth and only the truth. And the truth is that yes, I felt very guilty. But I also felt very stupid and responsible over what happened to James and Lily. I have to explain first what happened during those years. I am sure that you knew that Voldemort was slowly growing powerful in that time. He was ruthless with his punishments and not even his followers were spared from his wrath if they failed. That was the story whispered everywhere. That he was impossible to be defeated. When Voldemort first came to be known, James, Remus and Peter were just in our 2nd year. We had no clue who Voldemort was. We were kids. But that day changed everything.”

Chapter 30: Minerva

Summary:

Flashback

Chapter Text

Flashback

Sirius quickly wolfed down his breakfast, giving a worried glance to Remus. He had ended up in the hospital wing again. James was now planning to use his Invisibility Cloak, to follow Remus wherever he went the next time. Sirius was beginning to have suspicions, but he just could not voice it. Because he had been taught that such individuals were just dark creatures. But not Remus. Remus was sweet and often exasperated with their tricks, but he was also the person who created backup plans so that they won’t get caught by Minnie. Sirius smirks as he calls Professor McGonagall, with that name in his mind. He has seen her hide her smiles when it comes to their antics, even though she is pretty strict in her demeanor. He glances towards the High table with a worried glance. Professor McGonagall did not look happy today. In fact her gaze was looking downright frantic, even worried.

Sirius was never exposed to the fear of worry, until he met James parents in his previous summer. He made the excuse of building connections to his parents, so that they can let him shift to James's house for one month. He tried to take Regulus along, but he refused, because he did not want to leave their mad mother, with the bloody elf Kreacher alone. Luckily, his mother always favored Regulus over him, so she would not do anything to harm her precious child. But just for safety's sake, Sirius decides to send off a coded letter to Regulus, so that he is aware that Sirius is asking about him.

Suddenly the Great Hall doors opened, and a group of solemn looking wizards entered. Sirius heard gasps. He was also shocked. These were the Auror wizards. And one of the Auror wizards was James's father. James stood up excitedly, but seeing his father’s solemn expression, he sat back down, his expression now confused. Sirius follows the movement, as they walk towards the High table. He then sees McGonagall. It was only due to years of his training before Hogwarts, that he was able to recognize the signs of despair in McGonagall’s eyes, but her body language was still and straight, as if she was just teaching a class. She walked down the High Table, Dumbledore following closely behind her. She stopped in front of the group of Auror wizards, who had their heads bowed down, whether it was in shame or in solidarity, Sirius couldn’t tell. Dumbledore quietly said, “Let's take it to my office.” All of them walked out of the Great Hall. Sirius, James and Remus looked at each other and in the next second scrambles out of their chairs. Peter follows after them, as they quickly ran down the corridor to where they knew they could hear the conversation. They finally reached behind the corridor and slid into the room, bordering Dumbledore’s office. They knew that there was a secret space, which the professors often used to converse with each other without any eavesdropping. And when the space opened, they were able to listen to the conversation clearly, as if it was happening right in front of them.

James' father had said “I am sorry Minerva; we weren’t able to reach on time.” McGonagall, her voice betraying her unsteadiness but staying strong asks “My daughter, did she die in peace?” James' father silence was deafening to all of their 12 yr old ears. They heard the sound of Minerva sitting heavily on the chair. Dumbledore quietly asks “What happened? How was he able to capture them?” James' father said “From what we could glean, Isabella was responding to a routine information check. And Arthur, had got a call from an old friend, David. Turns out the friend had joined the Dark side and to prove his loyalty, he betrayed Arthur and Isabella.” Minerva said in a broken voice “David did this? How could he? He was Arthur’s closest friend. How could he betray them?” There was only silence to that answer.

James' father said “Minerva, I am sorry I couldn’t reach there in time. You followed what I said and I…………” Minerva now said in a ferocious voice “Don’t you dare say the next sentence, Lord Potter. Even if you had recommended not to fulfill their demands, I wouldn’t have done it in the first place. No decent person would trade children for the safety of their family. Your son and other children are safe in Hogwarts, as long as I am alive.” Dumbledore quietly said “So will I Lord Potter. I promise you, Lord Potter, no child in my care will be harmed as long as they are confined to the rules of Hogwarts.” A rush of sound that sounds like a breath seems to come from Minerva’s side.

Sirius heard the trembling in Minerva’s voice as she said, “When can I bury my husband and child Auror Potter?” There was silence for a moment, before Potter said in a broken voice “I am sorry Minerva, there is nothing left to bury of Arthur and Isabella. They destroyed them through Fiendfyre.” And the next second, the dam over Minerva’s control was broken, as her wails resounded the room and its surroundings. It broke the Marauder’s heart to see their House Mistress, cry out in pain and unresolved conclusions. They all knew that Fiendfyre left no trace of the individual whatsoever. And they knew now that it was the biggest torture, this Voldemort could have given. Looking into each other eyes, all 4 of them resolved that no matter what they will make sure that Voldemort is brought down.

Flashback ends.

For the first time in 13 years, Sirius felt the teardrop roll down his cheeks. Looking up, he saw Hermione and Mrs. Granger try to control their tears but failed to do so. Dobby was crying openly and wiping his nose with his shirt. Mr. Granger, Harry, Ron’s and Mr. Granger hands were tightened into fists. He took a deep breath and continued with the story “We were naive during that time. We never realized the cost until we were actually a part of it. But by our 5th year, the lines were clearly divided. Gryffindors vs Slytherins. Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs used to stay neutral but very often they used to end up getting caught in the crossfire. And in the 7th year, we all joined Dumbledore’s army Order of the Phoenix. For the next 4 years, we fought with every possible method we could to defeat the Dark side. But no matter what, Voldemort never used to be defeated. If we injured him severely, in one encounter, in the next he looked just as fine as before.”

Chapter 31: Fidelius Charm

Summary:

Sirius explains what happens afterwards.

Chapter Text

Sirius rubbed his forehead, his head hurting at the losses they sustained. Marlene, Doris, Doreen, so many of them lost over the years. He tries to smile but it comes out as a grimace as he said “When we all were 21 years old, Voldemort started targeting us vigorously. In fact, even the most secretive plans were known to Voldemort, and he was prepared for it. That’s when we realized there was a traitor amongst our midst. Your Mom and Dad had to go into hiding because she was pregnant with you. Frank and Alice Longbottom also did the same. I was the Secret Keeper for your parents. But then the attacks on me specifically, started to increase drastically. It was as if Voldemort knew that I am the Secret Keeper. I was paranoid. My only priority during those days was to keep your parents and you safe, Prongslet. I started distrusting our friends, even our teammates. I became so paranoid, that the only person I could trust with your parents' safety, was Peter Pettigrew. Because I knew that he adored me and James. I counted on that adoration with his motivation to protect James and his family. I was wrong.”

Sirius closed his eyes this time in pain. He knew this was the part that would be the most painful to Harry, but he needed to tell this story. He needed to let it out, so that Harry and his friends would know the truth. Sirius said “I was supposed to spend 31st October, Halloween with your parents. But I was so tired from the night shift on the 30th, that I just wanted to spend it alone. Your Dad was disappointed, but he understood. That is what I always remember to this day. He looked at me, with a sad expression. James was never one for idle sitting. If he thought that there was any chance that he could fight without putting you and your mom in danger, he would have jumped at the chance. He longed for planning sessions, where we all sat together. But in the month of October, the losses in the Order were so heavy, that even I couldn’t tolerate being in your dad’s presence. Seeing him being so happy with you, I felt jealous that everything in his life seemed okay. He had you and your mom. Whereas I only had everyday trauma to face. So, I begged off his company on that day. But when the wards of your house were breached, I immediately went to the house. But I was too late. When I reached, your cottage was in complete shambles. Hagrid had you in his arms, and he told me that Dumbledore wanted Hagrid to take you to him. The only thing I could think of was what I would tell Remus. Because there was no way Voldemort could have reached James' location without Peter giving it up. But when I reached Peter’s house, I expected destruction with the Dark Mark over his house. Instead, I found a neat house, with dust gathered in all the rooms. Peter hadn’t resided over there for a long time.”

And finally, the alternative sprang to me. The only way Peter could have given up James' location, is if he was willing to do so. The charm we set up worked only on that basis. The Secret Keeper had to be willing to give up the location of the confidants. No threat, coercion or torture could have enabled him to sell the information out. If that happened, his magic would have immediately worked against him. Peter willingly forgot all of our friendship and gave up his friends, his family to save his life. And finally, the entire year made sense. How Peter started wearing long sleeve shirts, how he tugged nervously at the sleeves and kept glancing at his arm, when he felt very nervous. He was the spy that Dumbledore warned us all about. He betrayed and sold the information of every Order member, causing their deaths and the torture of their families. I think that was the moment I truly lost my senses. The next thing I only remember was being in Azkaban prison, with Bellatrix Lestrange howling with laughter over the sheer coincidence.”

Chapter Text

He looked at Harry, straight in the eye “You asked, why I didn’t ask for a trial. Because inevitably I became selfish during these years. I believed that this was my penance, for placing my needs and wants more priority, over my brother’s family safety. If I had been at your house on Halloween, I could have maybe given James, Lily and you more time to escape. Maybe they both would have been alive if it wasn’t for my selfishness.”

Sirius looked down to the floor in shame, when he felt a soft, hesitant hand on his shoulder. Looking at Harry in surprise, who was awkwardly patting him, he gave a trembling smile. Harry said, “To be honest, if I knew my dad, he and my mom would have smacked your head upside down for even thinking like that.” Sirius laughed, tears in his voice, as he said “You would be definitely right. But I would have still felt the same.” Ron clears his congested throat, trying to hide his feelings. He said in a gruff voice “So, why did you break out of prison? Because you realized that Harry would be in danger again.” Sirius looked at Ron, giving a tiny smirk and said “Actually, I broke out of prison, because of you Ron.” Ron stared at him gob smacked.

Ron spluttered “What? You broke out of the prison to kill me. What in the bloody hell did I do to you?” Sirius for the first time, in a long while let out a genuine laugh. He knows that he is being scary, but it is kind of funny that in spite of his story, people still assume. Sirius chuckles fade away and he sees everyone eyeing him warily again. Sirius said “Ron, I did not kill Peter Pettigrew and those 12 Muggles all those years ago. The Peter Pettigrew who is supposedly dead, has been living as your rat for the last 12 years.” Everyone stared at Sirius in shock. Now serious, Sirius said “The biggest secret that all of us carried together was that we were all unregistered Animagi. I am not going to tell you the reason because it is not my secret. But all I can tell you, was that it was not just because of adventure. This was our pact, our unbreakable oath, that no matter what under no circumstances willing or otherwise, we would reveal this secret to anyone. That is why, I was 100% sure, that there was no way Peter would have told the Dark Lord that we all were unregistered Animagi. After finding out Peter had betrayed James, yes, I did confront him on that street. But Peter must have had contingency plans, because he yelled out about how I betrayed James and Lily. Before I could do anything to counteract it, the streets were destroyed with the Bombardo charm. I was hit by the Confundus spell, I think because it was only after that I forgot everything. The next thing I know is that Azkaban cell. I did not demand a trial because I truly believed that I did not deserve it. But looking back now, I can say that maybe the remnants of the Confundus spell on my magic. It only took consistent exposure from the Dementors, for 12 years to remove the spell from my magic. It was only when I saw Peter’s picture as your rat in the Daily Prophet that I felt that I was able to think clearly for the first time.”

Hermione and Mrs. Granger narrow their eyes suspiciously at Sirius, who marvels at the stark familiarity between mother and daughter. Mrs. Granger asked “How do we know, that you are telling the truth?” Sirius shrugs his shoulders and says “I am standing here with no wand, my magic core almost depleted, and completely vulnerable. You have the contact of one of the most powerful voices in the Wizengamot, Lady Longbottom. You can ask her to perform the Animagi detection spell. But before all of this, let me ask a question to you Ron. Your rat survived as a pet, first to your brother, then to you. Rats typically should have only survived only 8 years after their birth. So what made your rat survive over 12 years?” Ron opened his mouth to reply and closed it the next second. His eyebrows scrunched together in a frown as he realized the potential consequences of Sirius’s questions. If anyone had asked him, Ron would have immediately defended his rat, Scabbers. But here a serial murderer is willing to surrender himself completely, simply based on the assumption that a pet rat was actually an Animagi. If Ron sees it from an analytical perspective, he could also see the ingenuity in Peter’s plan.

Peter must have been the type of person, who everyone assumes hangs on to more powerful people. And Sirius himself admitted that Peter was smart enough to make successful plans. Being perceived as a weakling, would be a great advantage because no one would assume that the weakling would betray them for power. After all, Ron himself was exposed to the whispers about how he was only Harry Potter’s best friend because of his influential standing.

And since Peter would be seen as a weakling, no one would suspect him of being capable of betraying anyone. And anyone would give him information, trusting his mediocrity to make sure that he doesn’t share. Ron grimaces because it sounds too much like him. Ron feels horrified at the thought of betraying Harry. But he wonders, if Peter, who had strong friendships for 10 years, could betray them without a thought, then why couldn’t he? Ron shakes his head to clear his thoughts, when he hears Sirius say, “You are nothing like Peter.”

Ron glares at Sirius, while Harry and Hermione look on confused. Mr. and Mrs. Granger get an understanding expression and settle back to let a stranger handle this test of friendship before. Sirius said “If you were anything like Peter, you wouldn’t break out of your family’s safety just to ensure that your best friend stays safe. You wouldn’t have convinced your brothers to break your best friend out of his home during 2nd year. And you would also not be standing here, comparing yourself with an individual like Peter just to feel horrified over the thought of betraying Harry.”

Ron feels a little better but glares at Sirius, for revealing his feelings in front of Harry and Hermione who look like they would start any moment with the reassurances that they did not think such a way about him. Ron knows what Sirius meant by now. It is easy to find similarities between oneself and the worser version of oneself. Like Harry refuses to use his parseltongue believing that it is an evil skill and should never be used. But Ron knows that skills actually depend on purpose. If the purpose makes the decision, then the tools are used as good and bad. That is why Ron knows that he will use his analytical skills for good and not bad. Ron then saw the chess pieces move in his head and he could see the plan forming like a chessboard game in his head. His plan, though only based on half heard ideas, was still able to make sense. He told “We can use Sirius as a bait to draw out Peter.”

Notes:

I know I said that I would complete the chapters in the month of January. I am so very sorry for the one month delay. My only justification is that real life got in the way, at the same time my health had to be given more priority. That is why I focused more on completing the story, than posting the chapters. We are now in the final stage, and this stage will set the backdrop for further events.

So, please do comment and thank you for your patience.

Chapter 33: Let the Adults Begin

Summary:

Augusta and Remus have no clue regarding the ride they are in for.

Chapter Text

Remus and Augusta walked down the long Ministry hallway. They received a mysterious message from Ron, who told that they have to be present in the Ministry at a particular time. They knew that there was a larger picture at play here, but the letter gave them no clues as to what it was. As they walked down the hallway, Remus felt uncomfortable with the stares that he and Augusta garnered. It was like they never expected that the head of a powerful house, would be accompanied by a werewolf. Remus felt his defense mechanism of avoidance rise up again, as he began entertaining the thoughts of making an excuse and escaping from there. But from what Augusta told him, Harry needed him. If there was even the slightest possibility that Sirius is innocent, then he would need him also. If Remus's defense mechanism was avoidance, then Sirius's defense mechanism was self-flagellation. Sirius always took the losses harder than the rest of them. When Marlena and her family were killed, Sirius went on a wild rampage so violent that the Death Eaters began to run away at the sight of him. He invoked fear in even Dumbledore's mind. Because Sirius carried death in his eyes, after that.

That is why it might have been easier to believe that Sirius joined the Dark Side. But based on Augusta's observations, Remus now began to wonder whether the violence was a mask for his underlying grief. Because if James was the heartbeat, Marlena was his heart. And Remus knows the feeling of living with a numbed heart all of these years. But he still could not shake off his suspicion of Sirius being a traitor. Because he was the only possibility of being James Secret Keeper. The other option was Peter and even James knew that it was a bad idea. But when he looks back, Remus could see how Sirius could have persuaded James to take Peter on as a Secret Keeper. In the end Sirius saw Peter, as someone easily malleable, controllable. He could have believed that Peter could be easily hidden, and he would be free to go on his revenge rampage.

But even Remus couldn't shake off the question: If Peter was the Secret Keeper, then why would he confront Sirius about being the Secret Keeper? Why would he blame Sirius for the deaths of James and Lily? Unless Peter had made the plan to throw the blame of their death on Sirius. But then this would also mean that Peter had actually wanted James and Lily to die. But why? Why would he break so many relationships just to gain power? Just to become more powerful. Was it all really worth it?

Remus's head hurt with all the questions. He felt that he was going around so many circles that there was no way out. On top of this, how would a werewolf handle Prongslet? How would he justify his absence all these years? But is any justification good enough for Harry's appeasement?

Suddenly shouts resonated down the Ministry hallway prompting Augusta and Remus to share a mystified glance with each other. They rushed down the hallway to see multiple wizards get their wands out and pointing towards the fireplace. Both of them stared in shock as they saw Ron Weasley and Harry Potter, supported by Sirius black, their faces pale and bruised.

Bill, Charlie and Arthur immediately rushed to the Ministry Atrium. Their hearts were beating with fear when they came to know that Ron and Harry were both in the hands of Sirius Black. Their worst fears came true. Reaching the Atrium, Arthur shouted the authority strong in his voice “Don't shoot. That is my son and the Boy Who Lived.”

Till now the entire atmosphere was on the verge of casting the Killing Curse but being reminded that there were children, that too the Sacred Families heirs made most of the wizards and witches hesitant. Bill could see that some of the wizards and witches' wands still twitched. Making eye contact with Charlie, Bill gave a nonverbal signal to handle them. Charlie's eyes grew cold and he turned his fearful stare on those wizards and witches. When Arthur stepped forward, Sirius Black said in a strong voice “Arthur Weasley, Head of the Weasley House, under the Sacred Family Law, on account of the rescue of the Weasley and Potter Heir, I claim Trust Vote.” In the Atrium, all the wizards and witches including Augusta and Remus's faces paled.

Chapter 34: Trust Vote

Summary:

Sirius considers Ron seriously.

Chapter Text

Trust vote was a right that can only be claimed between Sacred Families. Even muggleborns and ordinary wizard families couldn't claim this right. Under this right, when a Sacred Family performs an action that would ensure the future of another Sacred Family, they can claim the right to claim loyalty, and trust over the original Sacred Family. The Sacred family can give their trust and loyalty to the rescuer as long as the trust is not abused.

If at any point the trust has been abused or misused the Sacred Family can claim withdrawal of trust. But this withdrawal can only be done after a certain number of days. When it comes to the saving of Heir, the number of days before the trust can be withdrawn is 30 days.

Many of the wizarding community members believed that the Weasley family are blood traitors and are thus powerless. What they failed to realize is that the Weasley family is part of the 28 Sacred families who are the foundational members of the community. No matter how dire a Sacred Family is, when they want to claim any rights, any properties from anyone, they can do so with full liberty and no restrictions. The Weasley family had full authority to claim the property of anyone who dishonored them. This was the only reason why Arthur Weasley was a continuous thorn in Lucius Malfoy's case, but no one could do anything about it.

Arthur straightened up, reminding himself that right now Sirius Black was not standing in front of him like a criminal, but as the heir to one of the most powerful families in the wizarding world. And the only way to save his son Ron, was to give Black his due respect. He said, “I accept.” If he had paid more attention to his son and Sirius facial expressions, he would have noticed the triumphant glint in Ron's eyes and the surprise on Sirius's face.

Sirius realized that Harry's friend was more intelligent than he is given credit for. An individual who is able to predict people's reactions accordingly in a natural capacity is considered as a rare talent in the wizarding world. Sirius finally understood the value Ron holds in Harry's life not just as his best friend, but also as a valuable advisor. But right now, the primary importance was to get Peter to take center stage.

Sirius straightened his shoulder even though his next words are going to sound ridiculous. He said “I want a Wizengoat trial for your family pet.” And everyone from Arthur to the Ministry members stared at him in shock at his stupidity. Arthur said in an incredulous voice “You what? How does Scabbers figure into all of this? And wouldn't he be with Ron?”

Sirius looked at Ron, reluctant to say the next words. He knew the extent it can damage Ron's reputation. But this was the only viable way, to make sure that his allegation is taken seriously. Sirius said “I want a trial for your family pet because he has cast a Confundus curse on your son and instructed him to get Harry Potter to him.” Arthur looked at Ron horrified and could see the unfocused expression on his face.

Minister Fudge said “It is obvious that Sirius Black has gone mad. How can an animal cast a spell on your son? You seriously can't be allowing this madness Arthur.” Bill glares at Minister Fudge. He thought since the Minister would recognize that 2 kids are involved, he would immediately sanction a trial for it. But no, the Minister seems to be concerned with the schematics and optics of putting a house pet on trial.

Bill opens his mouth, when his father calmly said “Sanction the trial now Cornelius, or I will make sure that no department works according to your orders again. You will be a Minister without power.” Cornelius pales while everyone stares at Arthur startled. Bill gives a slight smirk to himself. Everyone thought that his father was a layover. He will follow who he believes in. While that is true, Bill also knows that when it comes to family, his father always follows the instincts. He never trusts any information given by anyone. And inevitably, he will go to any extent for his family.

Fudge stared disbelieving at Arthur and said “I don't know what you think about yourself Arthur. But whatever your illusions are about my position, I would like you to dispel it as soon as possible.” Arthur narrowed his eyes at Fudge. Arthur said “Under the sacred charter of the 28 Families Act, I Arthur Weasley, Lord of the Weasley house, Guardian of the Prewett house, hereby charge Cornelius Fudge, who under the post of Minister of Magic, failed in his duties to protect my heir. He has put the secondary heir in grave danger and failed to take any measures to mitigate this. Mother Magic, hear my words, Strip the Minister of his post or so he will bear my wrath.” The room's atmosphere had grown thinner with Arthur's words.

Fudge felt his magic respond to the danger posed to itself. He panicked and looked at Lucius. “Do Something”, he screamed. But Lucius himself was helpless and unable to frame any sentences or manners to dissuade Arthur from his anger. Finally, Fudge said “Okay, Okay I will conduct a trial of your pet. I promise in front of Mother Magic that I will ensure the rat gets a trial.” And everything in the room calmed down. Arthur went from the room, followed by a smirking Bill and Charlie.

Chapter 35: The Trial

Summary:

Sirius, well Peter's Trial Begins

Chapter Text

The Wizengamot filled with members of the ruling wizarding families, as they settled themselves in their seats. Many of them were surprised to see Arthur with a thunderous face. The Weasley family was known to not participate in the trial, for lack of wealth to do so. They also were more eagerly interested in Muggle centric measures which often led to disapproval among the Wizengamot members.

Ron and Harry entered first followed closely by Sirius Black. Even though Remus and Augusta were with the Wizengamot seats, Remus acting in the role of Augusta's guest, they both could see the slight smirk on the children's face. Seeing the desperation in the Weasley's family face, Remus wonders whether this was the only way in which this situation could have been sorted.

Ron by now was too nervous. Even though he felt like smirking at the success of the plan, but the next moments were absolutely crucial for his plan to succeed. It was now completely out of his hands. It was now in the hands of adults. And Ron was too nervous about the chances that the adults would screw up.

Fudge reluctantly proceeded to the Minister of Magic chair. He knew that what he is going to do would look absolutely foolish in front of everyone and would definitely hurt his chances of reelection. In his mind, he vowed to do anything to get Arthur Weasley out of the Ministry as soon as possible. The one thing to look forward to is that Sirius Black is within his grasp. So, he can entertain at least partial chances of getting into the good books of the Council.

Raising his voice with a sonorous charm, he said “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Wizengamot, we gathered here today for the trial of heir endangerment of the Sacred 28 family heirs. Do proceed with caution. All the members whispered in shock with comprehension dawning over them of what Arthur Weasley stands for.

Most of the Wizengamot members forgot about the clause in the Sacred 28 contracts, which states that even with the loss of wealth and prestige, the members will retain a seat in the Wizengamot Court. As several members begin to recall the clauses, their faces pales as they finally realize the power that the Weasley family wields over all of them.

Fudge finally brings the words out “We stand here as trial members of the Weasley family pet Scabbers, who has been accused of casting the Confundus charms over the Weasley heir Ronald Bilius Weasley and the Potter heir also known as the Boy Who Lived, Heir Harry Potter. The charges were brought by the Black Heir Lord Sirius Black.” Everyone stared at Fudge in dubious shock.

Lord Greengrass said “You can’t be serious Minister Fudge.” Before Fudge could say anything, Arthur looks at the Lord straight in the eye and said “He is absolutely serious. And I would suggest you sit down Lord Greengrass, right now or so help me God I will bring those charges of Muggle baiting across 3 generations of your family members on your head.”

Lord Greengrass sat down silently. Arthur gestures to Fudge to continue. Fudge gives the sign to open the doors. From one side, Ron and Harry enter with Sirius Black, their heads held high to the audible gasp of the members. From the other side, Bill brings in Scabbers who is shaking terrified in the cage followed by the rest of the Weasley family members. Molly makes a move towards Ron, but Charlie holds her back and shakes his head.

Sirius tries to look fierce, but his heart beats in sympathy. He knows what he feels, when family members are in danger, the terror. But right now, this was the only way, to sort it through. Bill brings the rat to the center of the arena, while Sirius comes from the other side. There are 2 chairs, placed next to each other. On one chair, Sirius sits with a straight back, his head held high. He could not show any weakness right now, or the entire plan will definitely fail. Bill glares at him, from the other side and places the cage on the other chair. Sirius looks at the rat and gives a smug smirk. The rat glares at him from the cage. Everyone’s breath held in anticipation, for no one knows what can happen next.

Fudge clears his throat and gestures for Arthur to continue. Since, the trial was called by the Sacred 28 family, they will be the presiding High Council over the trial with the other members acting at witnesses, to ensure no mistrial will take place. And this counter measure also ensures no trial fixing takes place.

Arthur glares at Sirius and states “We gathered here today, to make a judgement on Lord Sirius Black’s accusation that my heir Ronal Bilius Weasley and the heir Harry Potter were kidnapped by the family pet Scabbers who is actually Peter Pettigrew in disguise.” Sirius clears his throat politely and gives a little flinch at Arthur’s glare.

Sirius says “Actually, I am here to accuse Peter Pettigrew of 13 years of spying on the Light Magic family through his Animagus form as a rat and conspiring with his Master Lord Voldemort for his resurrection process, by subjecting my godson Heir Harry Potter and your son Heir Ronald Bilius Weasley to 3 years of dangerous tasks which would have resulted in the death of both of the heirs.”

Fudge paled as he realized what is going to be revealed. And Arthur gritted his teeth by saying “Explain.”

Sirius said “In the first year of Heir Ronald and Heir Potter, there was a conspiracy of stealing the priceless artifact Philosopher’s Stone. 2 attempts were made: At the Gringotts vault, right on the day Heir Ronald and Heir Potter visited Diagon Alley. And finally at Hogwarts, under Dumbledore’s supervision, during the end of the year, Heir Potter and Heir Weasley, along with their associate, Heiress Granger were injured in the confrontation with Voldemort’s servant Professor Quirrell, who had entered Hogwarts under the guise of being their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. During that confrontation, they found out Voldemort had possessed Quirrell’s body making him the channel in the execution of their plans. All 3 had to spent 10 days in the Hospital Wing, as recovery from their injuries. If this was not enough, in the 2nd year, there was repeated attempts on their lives, even before the start of their school year. Heir Potter, had to use magic to protect himself, as a result he got notice from the Department of Underage Magic as a warning. And both the heirs were photographed driving your car, to escape from the attempt on their lives at King’s station.”
Sirius took a deep breath and continues “Muggleborns who were all in the vicinity, of both the heirs were petrified included Heiress Granger. Now, how would this have happened if the attacker was not looking for both the heirs? And finally at the end of the 2nd year, they found out that there was a soul piece of Voldemort in a diary, which had possessed Heiress Ginerva Weasley. In the rescue, all 3 heirs had barely escaped with their lives. Heiress Ginerva Weasley had to undergo medical treatment, to remove all signs of possession. Now Lord Arthur, if this is not specific targeting, then what is it? Who has consistent access, to Ron, Harry and Ginerva even in the most secure place of Hogwarts? Headmaster Dumbledore had put in counter spells, to prevent adult encroachment even in the dormitories of students. So how does both of our heirs seem to consistently find themselves in danger. Ergo, someone close to them, has been planning to sacrifice them in the pursuit of their master’s resurrection. I didn’t realize this until I saw the picture of your family trip to Egypt, where the rat was clearly present. I remembered Peter Pettigrew’s form in my school days, and I immediately broke out of Azkaban, to rescue my godson. But I didn’t realize your heir was also in danger, until I confronted him for taking my godson, out of the safety of his home.”

Everyone stared at Sirius in shock. There was spellbound by the story had woven. Sirius had to control himself, to whoop in delight. But his intention to whoop in delight faded, when Arthur asked him in a trembling voice, “How do we know that story you told us right now is true?”

Sirius shrugged and said “You can cast the Animagus detection spell and find out.” Arthur looked around and sees Augusta Longbottom. He said “Lady Longbottom, as witness to Lord Black’s accusation, I ask you to cast the spell of Animagus detection, to see what he told holds true or not.”

Augusta nods her head regally, marveling at the genius of the plan. She comes down and looks at the trembling rat in disgust. Whispering the spell, Augusta takes a step back. For a moment, nothing happens. Everyone is beginning to turn accusing eyes to Sirius, when the next second the rat begins to tremble, and his squeak converts to moans, as his legs and hands begin to change. Bill hurriedly removes the rat from the cage, but the rat doesn’t notice as it groans in pain of transforming to human. As others watched in horrified fascination, the rat’s head slowly transforms into a man, who has held the famous place in the halls of martyrs. Yet, he is nothing like the picture, as his full hair is now half bald, and his teeth is shaped in the form of a rat and his fingers are dirty with long nails and he is dressed in clothes that was 13 years old.

All the Council members now had their wands out and facing this old yet unfamiliar person, now occupying the chair next to Sirius Black who is staring back at the individual’s glare with a smug expression.

Fudge gasped “Pe…Pe….Peter Pettigrew.” Peter stuttered “Ye.Ye….Yes. I am Peter Pettigrew.” And the entire court who till then considered the trial a joke, sat down this time with serious consideration over what just happened then and what could happen now.

Chapter 36: Epilogue

Summary:

The End?

Chapter Text

Epilogue:

Hermione paced from one end of the room to another, rubbing her hands together and peering out of the window second by second. Mr. and Mrs. Granger were little calmer, but their fidgety posture indicated that they too were waiting over what has happened. Dobby was humming a little tune to himself, simply content with his duties and the fact that all was right in his world again.

A pop sound came, and Hermione immediately opened the door, to reveal Augusta Longbottom. Dobby hurried to make tea, while Hermione fired off her questions “Are Harry and Ron okay? Why aren’t they with you? Is Sirius getting a fair trial? When will they come back….” Mrs. Granger said firmly “Hermione Jean Granger, what sort of manner are you showing to our guest. Let her in now. Excuse my daughter for her lack of manners, Lady Longbottom.” Augusta smiles while Hermione looks ashamed of her loss of control.

Augusta said “It's okay. I understand the terrible anticipation and restlessness when you send your two best friends in danger and there is no clue over what is happening. Well, I would say that I have good news, better news, bad news and very bad news. So, which would you like to hear first?” Hermione sat down, heavily on the chair with a huff. Mr. and Mrs. Granger grimaced, but they didn’t reprimand her for the bad posture. Considering the news they were going to receive, it might be better to give their daughter some leeway, before her next explosion.

Mrs. Granger said “Why don't you start by telling us what happened in the trial? It was a big risk, that Ron and Harry took over the chances of success.” Augusta seated herself in a regal manner and accepted the cup of tea from Dobby. Taking a sip to steel herself or to increase the anticipation who knows, Augusta said “Well the trial if I do say so, went splendidly. Ron and Sirius were able to paint a picture, of Peter being a spy for Voldemort, who activated himself when he found out about Ron and Harry becoming friends. If I wasn’t half aware about their plan, I do say it would be an utter delight to watch how they played everyone around them. Right now, Harry, Ron and Sirius are in St Mungos under the supervision of Remus getting treated for curses and well consistent exposure to Dementors for 13 years.”

Hermione slowly framed her understanding in slow words “So the good news is Sirius already got a trial, and the very good news is that Peter has been caught. Right? So if these 2 are good news, what’s the bad news?” Putting the cup down in a grimace, Augusta looked at Hermione and said “Well the bad news is that due to idiocy of the Minister of Magic who did not put Anti Animagus cuffs on Peter, he was able to escape when he was taken away.” Everyone blasted Augusta’s ears by screaming “What?”

Mrs. Granger said in a wary voice “And the very bad news?” Augusta deliberated for a second, whether to reveal this information or not. But in the end, it is better to be safe than blind. Augusta said “A prophecy has been made that Lord Voldemort will be brought back with the help of Peter. It has also said that you 3 will either die or will succeed in destroying Lord Voldemort.”

Notes:

Okay, Okay Dont' hit me yet. I know this is a weird epilogue to end the story in, but please understand that this is just phase 1.

My basic intention of phase 1, was to see and yes, explore about what Ron, Harry and Hermione would do when they realize that the adults need to protect them. So, that is Phase 1.

Phase 2 will now be based on some Sirius adults, figuring out how to ensure that all children (yes that includes Slytherins) also, are protected from Voldemort. And we see some serious Dumbledore contemplation here (no bashing).

I didn't really had the plan of splitting this story in two phases. But this ending seemed to be appropriate for this story. I am still busy with real life, but I will try to post at least once a week around 2-4 chapters. Till then, stay positive, and continue commenting.
