Chapter Text
Keith sits on the worn floral couch in the designated green room, leaning into Lance partially because the cushions naturally sink that way, but mostly because he can. Other pairs of musicians have taken up arm chairs, stools, or pacing (as much as the small room allows) and the faint sounds of music drift down the staircase from the main show above.
Keith and Lance still have a few more performances to wait through before they’re up. Performance order was chosen for them or Keith absolutely would have taken his usual first slot. Lance’s long fingers flit along the frets of his guitar, warming up while also soothing Keith’s nerves with his quiet strums.
Their song is good. Keith knows it is. And finally having the Dear Friend business out in the open has only made him and Lance closer as partners, both in their music and in everything else.
Since finally coming clean to Lance, Keith’s life has been on another level. He never thought he could have so much, feel so much. It’s like he’d been living without one of his senses and Lance accepting him as K allowed the sensations to come rushing in.
It can be overwhelming at times, if he’s honest. Part of Keith wants to hold back, to protect itself from the inevitable crash from flying this high. He trusts Lance though. Keith knows he’s not flying alone, and Lance wouldn’t let him fall. Keith would never let Lance fall.
Above them, sitting in the audience is their family. Keith probably shouldn’t have been surprised by how well Hunk and Allura blended with his chosen heathens. Shiro, Pidge, and Adam will hear Keith’s music for the first time tonight. Well, his and Lance’s music. He’s not as nervous as he thought he’d be for that. Keith usually felt like his music was always missing something, never quite living up to what he hoped it could be. He thinks now that Lance is what was missing.
The trickle of applause drifts down the stairs, suddenly louder as the door opens and a voice calls, “Keith and Lance, please make your way to the stage.”
Lance turns to Keith, a cocky grin on full display.
“Ready?” Lance asks, and leans to press a quick kiss to Keith’s temple.
“Ready.”
Keith feels the fire in his veins as he follows his partner up to the stage. He doesn’t know what will come next for him and Lance. But whatever it is, he’s ready for it.

Keith and Lance’s song lyrics
Lance Verse:
I know the edges of your soul
I know the secrets of your heart
I'd recognize you in the dark
But in the light I fall apart
Lance's pre-chorus:
And I would give everything to you
Is everything I have worthy dues?
Lance's Chorus:
My head is spinning, spinning, spinning
Thoughts are spilling, spilling, spilling
Can’t stop feeling, feeling, feeling
Losing my mind at the thought of you.
What if I fess up, fess up, fess up
What if I mess up, mess up, mess up
If I can’t dress up, dress up, dress up
My imperfections and you leave too.
Keith Verse:
You know the edges of my soul
I know that yours fits right with mine
I know that one day we will find
Our hearts were meant to intertwine
Keith's pre-chorus:
And I will give everything in kind
You're everything I was meant to find
Keith's Chorus:
My head is spinning, spinning, spinning
Thoughts are spilling, spilling, spilling
Can’t stop feeling, feeling, feeling
Losing my mind at the thought of you.
Time that I fess up, fess up, fess up
Know we can't mess up, mess up, mess up
No need to dress up, dress up, dress up
Everything I am was made for you.
