Chapter Text
UB Black swatted, knocking Gladion to the ground.
"Gladion!"
I jumped off Garchomp and ran over to him.
"G-gladion..."
Lillie flew over and over to us, holding a med kit.
"Hang on, Big brother...w-we got you..."
Gladion groaned slightly and turned to look at Lillie.
"H-hey...l-look at me..."
Gladion glanced over at me.
"Y-you're gonna be f-fine..."
He smiled, weakly and a small drop of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
"A-ash...I-I have to t-tell you something..."
"Y-yeah?"
"I-I love you...no matter where I am..."
"Don't say that! Y-you're gonna be fine!" I cried, tears streaming down my cheeks.
He smiled and brushed my tears away.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
"A-ash..."
I opened my eyes and glanced at Lillie who had tears in her eyes.
"H-he's..." She broke off.
I looked down at the blank look on Gladion's face.
"N-no...no! No! No! T-this isn't real! This c-can't be happening!"
I shook Gladion's shoulders, trying to wake him up.
"Ash...i-it's no use...he's gone..."
"NO!" I screamed, tears welling up in my eyes.
I lay on top of him.
"PLEASE! Please! P-please..."

Chapter Text
"Ash...you have to eat..."
Burnet placed a plate in front of me, but I pushed it away.
"Not hungry..."
I stood up and walked over to the loft, placing my hand on the ladder.
"Bre..." I looked down at Umbreon, who looked up at me with concerned eyes. "I think she wants to go with you." I glanced at Burnet, then back at Umbreon, who pawed my leg and rubbed against me.
"I guess so..."
I placed her on the loft floor and climbed up after her. I walked over to the couch and laid down.
"Breon..."
Umbreon jumped up after me and curled up next to me. I stroked her and she purred, the gentle rumbling soothing me to sleep.
"Ash...it's time for school..."
I blinked and opened my eyes, staring up at Burnet, who smiled and rested her hand on my thigh. "Mhmn..." I sat up and pulled my knees up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them and resting my chin on my arms.
"Do you want to stay home?"
Umbreon nudged me with her paw and I gently rubbed her back, the coolness of her soft fur felt like a comforting breeze.
"I'll tell Kukui that you're staying home today."
Burnet wrapped her arms around me, squeezing me tightly. She smiled at me and stood up, climbing back down the ladder and into the kitchen.
I sighed. "Why did you have to leave me...?"
Umbreon looked up at me and gently licked my face. "You miss him too...don't you?" Umbreon rested her head in my lap, and I could feel the sadness radiating from her.
"Bre..."
I sighed and leaned back on the couch, closing my eyes to hide the stinging tears that were forming in the corners of my eyes. I curled up in a ball, willing the tears away, but they started to fall as I replayed the moment I lost the person I loved the most over and over again, wishing there was some way I could bring him back.
But I knew that it wasn't possible...he was gone...and I was never getting him back...
The tears started to come faster now, but I didn't have the energy to wipe them away. I lay there, in silence, wishing my pain away. I pushed myself up, startling Umbreon with the sudden movement. "Breon?!" She looked up at me and jumped down from the couch, following me when I started down the ladder.
{Skip if you are not comfortable with}
I walked into the kitchen and over to the knife drawer. I pulled it open and grabbed one, holding it up to the light.
"Umbreon!" Umbreon pawed at my leg, but I nudged her away with my foot.
I gently placed the knife on my wrist, grimacing slightly at the sharp sting of the cool metal. A small red line welled up from the cut and a small drop of blood fell to the floor, splashing onto the rug beneath me.
Umbreon kept pawing at me, but I ignored her as I continued on, leaving small lines all down my forearms.
I reached under the sink, grabbing the med kit and pulling it out, setting it down on the counter. As I wound the bandages around my arms, I thought of what Gladion would've thought of what I had just done, and I felt a small pang of guilt.
{Okay it's done}
I sighed, my arms coming down to rest by my sides. Climbing back up the ladder, I winced at every little sting of the cuts, but I brushed the feeling aside and walked back over to the couch.
I crawled back under the blankets and Umbreon curled up beside me again. I closed my eyes, and soon I fell into a restless sleep, full of painful memories and recurring nightmares.

"Ash...it's time to wake up..."
Soft fingers gently traced circles on my cheek, and I blinked, tilting my head to look at the person. Burnet smiled. "Good morning..." She whispered and I sighed, shoving my face in the pillow.
"Ash, c'mon...you have to wake up."
I blinked away tears. "No."
"Ash..."
"Leave..." I hesitated, biting back a sob, "leave me alone..." I whispered.
"Alright. I'll give you some space..." She stood up, but not before giving me a gentle kiss on the back of the head. "Also, there's something I need to tell you..." I pulled my face out of the pillow and glanced at Burnet. "Gladion's funeral is in a few days and..." She broke off, clearing her throat, "Lusamine and Lillie have asked that you attend..."
I blinked again, a fresh wave of tears bubbling up inside of me.
"I know that it will be hard for you...but would you think about it? Please?" I swallowed and slowly nodded, trying to keep the tears from bubbling over. Burnet smiled sadly. "Thank you, Ash..."
I nodded again, and Burnet started to leave again, but she glanced back at me one last time. "Maybe you should go for a walk, see your friends, maybe have a Pokemon battle."
Bile rose in my throat as I thought of battling without Gladion around, but I swallowed, pushing it back down. "I-I'll...I'll think about it..."
She smiled again. "Good..."
I decided to take a walk...maybe it would help clear my head...make me feel better. Umbreon walked beside me, occasionally brushing against my leg, keeping in step with me.
"Ash!" I turned to see Lillie standing behind me, holding Snowy in her arms.
"H-Hey Lillie..." I mumbled, not meeting her eyes.
She smiled sadly. "You look tired, Ash..." I wrapped my arms around myself, wincing slightly at the sting of the cuts. "H-Haven't really been sleeping lately..." Umbreon looked up at me, bumping her head against my leg.
I bent down, running my hands through her soft fur.
"I miss him too..." I looked up.
"What...?" Lillie nodded. "I miss Gladion too, you know...and if you ever need to talk, I'm here. Okay?" I nodded. "Okay...I-I gotta go...see ya' 'round Lillie..."
I slowly walked up the steps to the Professors' house, gently opening the door.
"M-Mom...?" Mom turned around, smiling sadly at me. "Hey Ash..." Mimey stuck his head around my mom's legs, waving at me, but I didn't wave back. "What are you doing here, Mom...?"
She glanced at the Professors before looking back at me.
"I was wondering...if after the funeral, if you wanted to come home to Kanto with me? A friend of Professor Oak just opened a research center in Vermilion City and I thought-"
"I'll have to think about it..."
Mom blinked. "Oh...okay...but first. There's someone I want you to meet." I raised an eyebrow. "Who?" A boy around my age, walked into the room. He had black hair with red streaks on one side and was carrying a backpack.
Mom smiled. "This is Goh! Goh, meet Ash." He waved at me, a small smile on his face.
"I thought you guys could be friends."
I bit my lip slightly. "Okay..."
Goh smiled at me. "What is your dream Ash?" "My dream...?" Goh nodded. "Yeah! What's your goal in life?" I stared down at the floor. "I-I don't really know anymore..." I mumbled.
My mom walked over to me, setting her hand on my shoulder. "Ash wants to be a Pokemon Master, right Ash?" I shrugged slightly. "I guess..."
Goh grinned. "My goal...is to catch one of every single Pokemon! Including Mew!"
Mom laughed. "What an ambitious goal, Goh! Right, Ash?" I shrugged again. "That seems like a lot..." Goh laughed. "Yep! But I'm going to do it! I know I can!" I wrapped my arms around myself, hugging my arms to my chest. "Cool..."
Kukui glanced out the window. "It's getting late. Goh, Delia, let me help you get settled."
"I'll get started on dinner! Ash, do you want to help?" Burnet asked and I shook my head. "I'm pretty tired...I think I'll turn in..." I walked over to the ladder to the loft and climbed up, laying down on the couch.
"Are you sure?" She called up. "Don't you want to eat dinner?"
I closed my eyes. "Not hungry..."
She sighed. "Okay...but if you do get hungry, there's food in the fridge!"
"Okay..."
