Work Text:

There never seemed to be any end to this foolishness.

Her job description had been very clear. She tracks down criminals all over the world, she prosecutes them in court, and she moves on to her next case. Nowhere in that was written that she had to attend these foolish parties.

Every year there had to be one that she had to go to. It was the same end of the year celebrations that annoyed here to no end.

It always started off respectable, going over their successes over the year and their accomplishments, but without fail it ended in drunken fools all getting herded into their rideshares as if they were all college age children once again. Regardless of that, she had to endure it or else she would have her arm twisted by the one other sober person in the room that she didn’t stay the whole time.

“Ziska! Have you tried these deviled eggs yet?” Maya asked, grinning widely as she found yet another poor server tasked with running around and bringing snacks and other assorted appetizers to the guests who for the majority would be too drunk to appreciate them.

Aside from Maya, who looked adorable in the outfit they had picked out for this event. They had picked it out earlier, and it was a nice and simple dress to look nice for the occasion. Purple truly was her colour, and Franziska wasn’t about to leave her side and let any fool walk up and talk to her. Much like herself, Maya Fey was far too important to talk to any of these drunkard fools that could act perfectly respectable the rest of the year.

She stepped forward, to close the gap between them as to keep any foolish thoughts from any of the foolish guests around them. “I haven’t. I take it they’re good?”

“They’re amazing! This makes me think of the last party I went to at the Gatewater,” she beamed, before wilting a little.

“I doubt there’s anyone as foolish as to pull a stunt like that at an InterPol event, and I have no intention on leaving your side this entire evening.”

Though her original reason was far more about foolish drunks, kidnappers were just as valid of a concern, she supposed. She would like to claim that the two events were nothing alike, but regardless Franziska could still feel that pain in her shoulder.

Just because it was a mark of pride didn’t mean it was exempt from hurting.

“Right! And I’m not going to accept any phone calls tonight either! If it’s important, they can text me and I can get back to them later.”

“Or they can call me. I don’t know if that fool Phoenix Wright’s phone can even manage texts,” she snarked, proud of the laugh that got out of Maya.

“Yeah, he might be the one person under sixty who’s just as bad as my sister was.” Maya laughed, and forced up memories of that archaic machine in Phoenix Wright’s office the few times Franziska had visited. .

“Your sister had a reason, Phoenix Wright does not.”

“I dunno, Sis was down here for a while when she got that old computer,” Maya paused. “Do you think that’s why Nick rides a bike everywhere? Because that’s too advanced? Can we rule out that he’s a time traveller?”

Franziska had to laugh. “Are you taking his strategy for solving mysteries? Making wild accusations without any basis in reality?”

“But how often is he right? He may not know how email works, but he’s pretty good at crazy cases,” she beamed proudly. “But it is nice to know I’m the most tech savvy in the family.”

“I’m guessing you’ve forgotten that my baby brother knew him when they were children?”

“Well…” Maya pouted a little. “Well that doesn’t change the fact that he could’ve briefly been in our time, been sent back to the past, and then came back in time to go to college!”

“I think that might be the most ridiculous thing you have said yet, Ms. Maya Fey.” she kissed her cheek.

“I’m still gonna ask him later.”

“Just be careful or else you’ll confuse him with your modern technology.” she said, knowing that the odds of this being forgotten by the time they headed back to their hotel room.

“See you get it.”

Franziska shook her head. It was a mystery as to how she could manage to make being foolish endearing. Perhaps that was why Franziska chose ther for her partner.

“You were telling me about the deviled eggs, right?” Franziska asked, seeing as how the waiter had wandered off at some point in their conversation.

“Right! You gotta”- she turned to where the waiter once stood, her cheeks puffing out adorably. -”Oh shoot. We let him get away…”

“I doubt he’s going anywhere. If the eggs are truly as noteworthy as you made them out to be, then I’m certain there’s going to be more. If he’s not around then perhaps he could be in the kitchen, and won’t be too much longer.” Franziska wasn’t what one would call an excellent chef, or even a passable chef, but how long could it take to make a deviled egg?

“I guess that’s fair. But I guess that’s gonna add to the fun!” she beamed, clapping her hands together.

“And what exactly do you intend to do? You’re not proposing that we go into the kitchen ourselves and make our own.”

“Of course not. Why bother making it when there’s already people making it.”

That was very close to one of the things she was taught growing up, and still one of the things she believed in to this day.

“So what exactly are you proposing, Ms. Maya Fey?”

“We’re gonna hunt him down through the party and take his eggs!”

Hunting him down might’ve been phrased a little more dramatically than she would’ve used, but nonetheless Franziska found it delightful. Perhaps this could be a good way to “live a little” as Maya had been often to encourage her.

“There won’t be a single place where he can hide from us. We’re both excellent investigators, it shouldn’t be too hard to find him.”

Even if they did all look alike, they would most certainly find him. And if they found that waiter with the bread that she liked, then there were worse things in the world.

Perhaps she would come to more parties of this nature, if for no other reason give her girlfriend a wonderful opportunity to try all sorts of treats.

But those parties could wait. Right now Franziska had eggs to find.
