“I’m asking you to be honest with me!”
This complicated dance they‘d been locked in for months only served to confuse Lucy even more. She’d once thought, maybe, when she became a full-fledged P2, things would be different. She considered Tim a friend, though he seemed reluctant to admit either way.
The back and forth had quickly become rather exhausting, coming to a volatile head one evening after Lucy suggested a round of drinks.
“Why won’t you get a drink with me?” Lucy pressed.
Tim looked agitated, more so than she had ever seen him. He was always like stone, unflappable and unyielding.
“Tim--”
“Because I’d want more!” Tim replied hurriedly, as though the words pained him to speak.
Lucy blinked, stunned. “What?”
“I would want more than just a drink,” Tim sighed, looking at her as he had done in the parking garage their last shift together as TO and rookie. But it wasn’t until this moment that Lucy could put words to the emotion. Tim looked at her like she hung the moon and the stars in the sky, like she was his lighthouse in a raging storm. “I would want dinner. Hand-holding across the table. A walk on the beach. And then later...”
Tim trailed off, forcing himself to not utter another word. Lucy closed the distance between them, took one of his shaking hands in hers.
“I want that,” she admitted softly. “I want all of that with you. And more.”
