Work Text:

The sky thundered heavily with rain, as if wringing itself of the last dregs of spring.

May had been a waterlogged and humid month; the kind of weather people in Detroit seemed to despise. “A shitty month”, Hank had called it. For humans, it was the tenuous issue of never wearing the right clothing: being too hot or too cold, or going out dressed for ninety-degree weather, only to get caught out by relentless rain showers like the one Connor was currently sheltering from. For androids, humidity and temperature at its current level didn’t really affect them. High temperatures, sure, that could potentially cause some damage. But the temperatures at present weren’t a problem. Generally this month hadn’t really been a problem for Connor, weather-wise. A problem emotionally? Absolutely. Deviancy was continuing to be a major obstacle for Connor to climb. He was still struggling a lot. Still didn’t understand things. Was still learning new facts and faults about himself. In this sense, May for him had also been ‘a shitty month’. Thankfully Hank seemed to understand. He gave Connor space when he needed it. Was close when Connor asked. Hank… had truly been a godsend for the android. He didn’t like to think about where he’d be if the lieutenant hadn’t been around to support him in these first few months of his life. Connor wouldn’t have made it without Hank. He knew that unquestionably. He wondered if Hank knew that too. There had certainly been a few specific instances that… might have brought the man to a similar conclusion.

Those days had been bad.

But…

Though Connor wasn’t sure why, he was starting to feel a little differently. Like… maybe things would work out. That he would be okay, eventually… This certainly hadn’t been a quick or instant realisation. It’d taken months for him to even begin thinking with the slightest notion of positivity, and he still struggled with it so much. Yet now and then, he would have a thought that… perhaps things were getting better. Very slowly, yes. But better. Usually these kinds of thoughts got pushed away quickly, or ignored all together: Connor didn’t want to get his hopes up after all. But sometimes he allowed himself to dream, just a little.

May hadn’t been a great month for him. But it hadn’t been the worst month either. Not by a long shot.

Stepping out from his shelter, Connor looked up at the slowly brightening sky. The rain was starting to pass.

Finally warm sunlight was beginning to peek between the clouds.
