Returning to the land of the living after being in stasis for any given amount of time is hard. But this time it was especially disorienting since he had no recollections of the events leading up to his beauty sleep in the coffin-shaped glass tube. His eyelids fluttered for a moment then he found a set of beautiful blue eyes and a familiar smile staring down at him.
"Captain," he said, his voice hoarse and groggy. Making it clear to him that this must have been his longest stay in the tube to date.
She lay a hand on his chest and he placed his hand over hers. The act of moving was a struggle as every muscle in his arm felt stiff and weak. "You gave us quite the scare there mister," Kathryn whispered, frightening back tears.
Chakotay caught sight of her clothing and noticed she was not in her command red jacket but in a green medical gown. "Are you alright, Kathryn?" He asked, always more concerned for her then himself.
She nodded and began puffing out short bursts of air.
Panic shot through Chakotay, something was off about her. He tried to sit up but his muscles would not obey. All he could do was lay there and watch. "Kathryn, what's wrong? Please tell me!" He croaked.
A painful moan escaped her lips and her fist clenched under Chakotay's. "What's wrong is…" she hollowed, doubling over in her seat. "Our baby is coming. She is coming now!"
"Our baby? Spirits Kathryn, did we?"
"Well I didn't do this to myself," she retorted, her facial muscles relaxing as the contraction finally passed. She stood from her seat to show Chakotay her massive belly.
"Spirits, I don't remember anything," he replied awestruck.
Kathryn's hand slid from his and she placed it on her back as she walked back and forth. "Too bad, that was the fun part, I guess you will just remember the not so fun part." She chuckled before her breathing started to shorten into timely puffs.
Waking from stasis was always jarring, but waking to find his captain in labor with his child he had no recollections of conceiving surely took the cake. He might have missed the last 9 months or so, but he was going to be there for Katheyn and the baby for the rest of his life.
