Chapter 1: now, run.

Chapter Text

It has been two months since you left everything from your previous life behind. You are now staying in a small cheap apartment, away from your family. At least for once in your life you finally found your peace. Escaping from your wealthy and toxic family will always be your best decision. So far, no one you know has known your location and that’s a good thing.

Born in this world as a quirkless, you are grateful for that but also you hate that. Your parents often called you useless, a burden, and many more insults aimed for you. It hurts you a lot to be honest, you were abused, but you couldn’t fight them back, they were right. You were useless without any quirk, but now you’re happy with your job as a barista in a small coffee shop in this small town not far from the main city but also not so far from a forest park. You’re grateful you could find this place because it helps you with your anxiety, panic attacks, and depression you got from your old home. It is calming, peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sometimes when you have enough free time, you will walk from your workplace to the nearest forest park just to chill, and that is exactly what you are going to do today. It is almost dawn when you finish your work, since it is not too crowded because it’s weekdays, you are allowed to go home early. Taking off your apron and cleaning some mess, you are now ready to leave your work.

“Going home?” asked Arima Yukie, the one and only close friend you have right now, she’s also working with you at the same place.

“Forest Park. Maybe.”
“It’s getting dark, you know.”
“Yeah, I know but you know that this town has low crime rates right? You don’t have to worry, I have my taser with me right now, I’ll be in my apartment before 8.”
“Hmm okay.”
“Bye. See ya.”

Walking step by step you finally arrived at the nearest crossroad from your workplace. You took the right way as you began walking straight for three blocks ahead until you finally arrived at your destination.

The sun is starting to set, the street light next to the bench you are sitting right now already on. The light from the street light is bright enough for you to see your surroundings in case there was someone stalking you.

Honestly, living in this world without any quirk where the majority eighty percent of the whole population has quirks kinda sucks, you feel helpless. What if someone with a quirk suddenly tries to jump or rob you here? You can do nothing but accept the fate that you precisely could easily get killed without even trying to open your mouth asking for help first.

When you finally feel safe enough, you take a book out from your bag and start reading it. This is how you usually spend your free time alone by reading books. Being drawn too deep into the book you’re reading, you almost lose track of the time. It’s been 7.48 pm when you don’t realize you have been sitting on that bench for almost 2 hours. You had to get back to your apartment. You finally sit up, and leave, as soon as you arrive at the nearest road, you see a car. That car is running but it doesn’t move, just stays there, waiting for something.

You ignored it as you walked across the street and passed the car. Suddenly, the car starts to move, approaching you until your eyes meet the driver’s eyes. Three seconds of glancing at him, you don’t need more time to realize something. You got to run.

You ran as fast as you could and the car kept following you until you turned into a dark alleyway. The car stopped right in front of the alley from the highway. Exploring the alley, you turned to the left, still running until you took a right way. Shit. You were stopped by some men, standing there with their plague doctor mask on. You were panting and your heart was pounding fast. You were scared, so damn scared that you think you’ll die from a heart attack.

The man with a black shirt with a matching trouser, a pale grey tie and white lace up sneakers tilted his head looking at you. His golden eyes were meeting with your eye. You were frozen, not knowing what to do, you bowed towards them, apologizing for the sudden bump. Right before you were trying to turn around to find yourself another way to run, you were surprised by a big palm, hitting your throat and pushing you off. Your back hit the rough surface of the wall behind you, you groaned in pain. You tried so hard to fight back and made this big guy’s hand off your throat but it was all useless. His grip on your throat was too tight until you couldn’t even manage to breathe. Your sight becomes blurry as his grip on your throat tightens.

“You better not interfere.” said the other guy with a low voice who you know as one of your family’s men, then one who drove the car. “Leave us alone and let’s pretend that this has never happened.”

Instead of leaving you there, dying, the golden-eyed guy walked towards him, taking his glove off and once he touched the guy’s skin, his body shattered into pieces. Bloods spread everywhere. The big guy’s grip on your throat loosened, you finally breathed some air. Coughing, you didn’t pay much attention to the big guy who just disappeared. You fell on your knees, eyes became red as you managed to stop yourself from crying, you panic attack rushed all over your body until your sight went blank. You passed out...

Chapter Text

“Are you sure you want to keep that child?”
“She’s worthless.”
“She has no quirk at all.”
“She’ll be a burden.”

---

You finally woke up from your dream. Sitting yourself in the bed, you feel all of your body aching. Checking all of your surroundings, you realized that this wasn’t your room. This room didn’t have so much furniture inside, only one bed that was pinned to the walls with a drawer next to the bed and a big tall white wardrobe in front of the bed. You started to panic as you couldn't think clearly, you thought your family got you, but a voice stopped you from panicking.

“Ah...You’re awake.” A man with a long white coat with a plague mask all over his face suddenly came in, handing you a glass of water. You awkwardly took the glass from his hand and drank it immediately since you were exhausted. Eyes still looking up at the man who was literally just standing there in front of you.

“Uh sorry, does this mask scare you hahah.” Taking off his mask, you could finally examine his face. He has thin, dark eyes, and pointed eyebrows, pale chin-length hair that forms an arrow-shaped at the end of his hair. “You passed out yesterday, after uhm… you were almost dead, so we brought you here.” He explained.

“Oh, yesterday… uhm, thanks.” you sighed, eyes looking down at the glass you handed. “For saving me.”

“No problem.” He moved from his place, approaching the opened door. “Actually.” He stopped then turned around facing you again. “Don’t thank me, it was the boss himself who brought you here.” Putting back his mask on, he proceeded to walk out from the room.

“Huh, the boss?” You halt for a second until you realize you should’ve gone to work by now. “Uhm wait! Sir!” Right before the man completely went out of your sight, he turned towards you who were attempting to get up from the bed.

“Yeah?”
“Can I go now, I should’ve gone to work by now.”
“Oh, yeah sorry to keep you waiting here, of course you can go, I’ll take you to the gate, you can order a taxi from there.”

“Uh okay.” Finally get up from the bed you’ve been sleeping all night, you gathered all of your stuff and fixed some mess from the bed. Before you were completely ready to go, you asked for a toilet.

You were finally back, taking all of your stuff and you’re ready to go. The man was still there waiting for you to get ready. “I’m ready to go.”

“Okay follow me.” You followed him all the way from your room to the end of the corridor. You both were silenced until he started a conversation.

“Anyways, I’m Kurono, Kurono Hari, you can call me Chrono.”
“Oh okay, Chrono.”
“What about yours?” Chrono turned to the right and met a long corridor. You were still following him from behind.
“I’m Y/n.” You were half jogging since chrono walked too fast just to keep up with his steps. You can tell that this house is quite big, they must be rich after all. This place looks like an ordinary Japanese office building. But once you turn to the last turn, it is still a long corridor but the furniture looks more like a traditional Japanese residence. “Uhm, by the way, about the boss, can you send my thanks to him?”

“Oh, sure, the boss is out right now, maybe I can do that.”
“Thanks.”

You finally saw the main entrance. You passed the door, met with a large courtyard with a pathway that leads to the gate. The gate was also decorated like a traditional Japanese residence. You were about to just take a walk from that place, but Chrono wouldn’t let you, he ordered you a taxi instead. Thanking him once again, you finally hopped into the taxi. You decided to go home first since it was still nine in the morning so you still got time to get ready for work. All the way from that place to your home, you were still confused.

What was that place?
Why is he wearing some kind of doctor plague mask?
Who are they?
Who is the boss?
Why would he help me?

You finally arrived in your apartment building. Anxiety rushed into all of your body as you remembered that your family’s men had found you yesterday. Damn. They probably already knew your location by now. You stepped into the lobby and rushed to the elevator. Once you were inside the elevator, you tried to calm yourself, hoping that no one had found your apartment yet. Once the elevator arrived at its destination, you immediately went out of the elevator and headed into your room.

Your heart was pounding faster when you found out that your apartment wasn’t locked. They’re here, you thought. As you began to push your doorknob open, someone from the inside suddenly opened the door at a quick pace.

“Y/n!” You sighed when you saw your friends, yukie, right in front of you.

“Holy shit, Thank God, It’s you.”

“Where the fuck have you been?” pulling you into her embrace, your heart began to calm by itself.

“Uhm… It’s a long story I’ll tell you later, now, let’s get to work.”
“Wait, are you sore you’re okay?”
“Yeah I am.”
“No, I mean, are you really okay? Did something happen to you?”
“Told you I’ll tell ya later, I just want to shower now.”

You took a quick shower while your friend was waiting on your couch, watching the TV. Right after you were done showering, you went to your closet, searching for clothes. You decided to wear an oversized palm sweater and paired it with long light blue jeans. Taking all of your stuff you needed, you are ready to go.

Walking on the sidewalk, you both remained silent. It was actually weird for you to be this quiet, Yukie didn’t want to ask you about what happened yesterday and why did you look so nervous, she wanted you to go tell her by yourself. Taking the last turn to the left, you were getting closer to your workplace.

You both finally arrived at your workplace, at a cafe where you both work precisely. Yukie went inside first then you followed. On that day, it was just you and Yukie who would go to work. Your boss, the owner of the cafe himself, is on his trip to his hometown and the other staff, Kayano will be starting her shift at 4 p.m, replacing you. Right after you closed the door behind you, you started to speak up.

“Yukie, I told you about the reason why I moved here right?”
“Yeah, what’s wrong?”
“They found me yesterday.”
“The fuck.. What?! Are you serious? So what are you going to do right now?” you didn’t expect her to react as surprised as she was.

“I don’t know… I almost got killed yesterday, but then these people, they wore some weird plague masks, saved me, I was unconscious all night so that’s why I haven’t texted you since yesterday.” You halted for a second, opening your mouth, trying to say something. “I was thinking about moving again.” You continued to walk, putting your bag on the counter and began to prepare some things before opening the cafe. Yukie was just standing there, both hands crossed in front of her chest, thinking.

“But I haven't decided, I might just stay here a little longer, I just don’t want them to catch me, I don’t wanna go back there.” Yukie hummed in response. You both continued preparing stuff and once you both finished everything, you opened the cafe.

You didn’t have to wait for a long time, someone already entered the cafe. A man with a black mask on his face, black long sleeve shirt with a matching trouser, a pair of white sneakers and gloves on both of his hands. Your eyes met with his golden eyes, both eyes locked with each other. Your eyes widened and from that moment, you realized that it was the same guy you encountered yesterday.

He was the man who saved you.

Chapter Text

Before you could react furthermore, Yukie had already gone to him in case he wanted to order something. You wanted to go to him but you weren't sure. That guy looked like a total mess, you could tell since he suddenly appeared at your workplace.

"Hey, you see that guy?" Yukie suddenly hopped onto you and whispered to your ear.

"Yeah, why?"

"He's so fine"

"Oh, goodluck." You rolled your eyes. Yukie left you to prepare for his order. You were still standing at the cashier when someone suddenly rushed in.

"Welcome to- huh? Chrono?" You were about to greet him but you recognized that face, it's Chrono.

"Oh, hey, I know you! what are you doing here?" Asked Chrono.

"Uhm apparently, I work here.”

"Is that so... Sorry, I'm in a hurry right now, I just need to get to the boss."

"The boss? So he is the boss?" your eyes were pointing right into the golden eyed man in the corner.

"Yeah, and I don’t have much time to talk right now so excuse me.”

You were left hanging, mouth opened, thinking. Still wondering why that man even cared to help you. Not long from that, Chrono and the black-masked, golden-eyed guy stood and rushed to get out of the cafe without even saying goodbye (since you know the Chrono guy) or even wait until their order is done. Seemed like they were in an emergency situation, not even hesitate to leave some money and tip since they didn’t even have a chance to taste the coffee that Yukie had already made. You saw them leaving and entering a car, which was parked across the road, not far from your place. A black sedan car drove so fast and in a matter of seconds was lost from your sight.

“Hey, where is the guy who just ordered-”

“He’s already gone…” your eyes wouldn’t even look away from the side of the road where the car was parked. Yukie besides you went confused. She even thought that the previous guy looked so damn fine that you couldn’t even look away. The next minutes went silent.

You were still puzzled. Why would all of this happen? One of your family’s men suddenly found you, people wearing weird plague masks, the golden-eyed man who turned out to be your savior and the boss. Boss of what? Are they running a business? You quickly realized that they are no ordinary people. The place you woke up this morning was no ordinary building. It was weird. These days feel so weird. And one thing you are sure that the golden-eyed man, the boss, or any alias you called him, is no ordinary person, more likely a dangerous person, the one who destroyed every inch of the guy you encountered yesterday, himself is a dangerous person.

“Hey! You okay?” Yukie broke the silence.

Back to reality, you wake from your thoughts. You were feeling a little bit dizzy, so much happening in one night.

“Oh, I’m okay. It just… everything feels so weird.” Tears started to flow down your cheeks. You were scared, confused, it was all such mixed feelings. You were scared that what if you went back to your family which was a hell for you. You didn’t want that to happen and that means you have to run again and again.

Yukie began to pull you into her embrace, guiding you to take a seat, calming you down, reassuring you that she is here for you, and of course she will be there for you too.

“That guy, the one who is wearing a black mask, he was the one who saved me yesterday,” You sobbed after finishing your word. “And I don’t know what to do right now, I want to run again but I’m tired. Why does it have to be like this? Why is it happening right now? Right after I almost found peace.”

Yukie just sat there beside you, still pulling you to her embrace. Stroking your back and shoulder, hoping it would make you feel better and not lonely.

“Yukie… Is life even worth living? I have never felt peace, even since I was just a kid. My parents hate me. I’m quirkless, I am not worth living.”

“Y/n, hey, it’s doesn’t matter okay, everyone has their own path, being someone who has a quirk doesn’t really mean they’re special, there are a lot things you can do out there. Trust me, everything will be fine, after today’s shift end, let’s talk about what are you going to do next.” Hughing you tighter, you were so grateful that you have her on your side right now. On your previous life, you didn’t even have any friends to rely on, you were all alone, until you met Yukie.

“Thanks, Yukie. I really am grateful to meet you.” You took a deep breath as you wiped the tears that left on your cheek. “Let’s continue our work!” You smiled at Yukie, you could see her eyes worried about your condition right now.

Later on that day, you finally finished your shift. It was less busy than usual, even the road or the sidewalk was quieter than what it should be. A few cars with sirens, which you thought could be an ambulance or a police car, seemed to be passing the road. This didn’t usually happen since the place that you’re staying in probably has the lowest crime rate. You assumed that they were on their way to another town because an incident had occurred so they were sending help to them.

Once your shift was over, you began packing all of your stuff, clearing the area of the cafe since there were no more customer insights. You made sure that everything had been cleaned up and left no single dirt. Except for Yukie, your shift ended at 4 p.m., she was taking a full-day shift today that would end at 10 p.m. Kayano, the other staff would be replacing your shift today.

After you had done packing and getting all of your stuff, the door opened. Kayano had arrived to begin his shift. It’s your time to go. Before leaving, you said goodbye to both of them and told Yukie that you will be waiting for her at your apartment.

Today went so fast. You decided to visit a supermarket to get some of your needs. Then peacefully walk to your apartment.

On the other side, at the cafe.

04.34 p.m.

A black car parked right in front of the cafe. The door opened, revealing two big men, both wearing long black coats, black pants, and black shoes. Entering the cafe, their eyes were observing every corner in that place. Both of them are intimidating.

Yukie was all alone when they entered the cafe. Kayano, who was supposed to accompany her today, just went out to buy some supplies because you guys were running out of stocks.

Yukie nervously but still professionally, approached and greeted them, asking if there was any favor that she could help. But they just ignored her as they continued to look around the quiet place. Once again, Yukie asked them.

“Excuse me, sir. Is there anything that I can help you with?”

Still no answer from them, instead they took out a photo from his pocket, showing a photo of yourself, sitting all alone at the park yesterday. “Tell me where she is!”

“I- I don’t know her.” Yukie tried her best to not look panicky. She knew them. She knew these guys were the one after you for some reasons she didn’t understand, and didn't need more time to realize that these guys were dangerous. The one that your family sent to hunt you down.

“Well, I don’t wanna cause any scene here, so I will ask you once again, politely. Where is she?”

“Told ya, I don’t know her!”

“You’re not helping.”

The other man took out a gun and pointed it to her. Yukie slowly stood back, she had no choice just to be standing there, waiting for Kayano to arrive.

“I truly have no idea what you guys are talking about. So please… leave me alone.” Tears began to well in the

“Not until you tell me where the fuck she is!” She could no longer walk away, the back of her hit the cabinet behind her. The guy with a gun jumped into the cashier area, pointing the gun closer to Yukie.

“Kenjiro… don’t be too harsh to her.” The other man responded. “Listen, I am not here to cause any scene, I just want to politely ask you where she is! I know exactly that she works here. Don’t make it difficult for us, darling.”

Yukie’s phone buzzed. Revealing y/n’s name on the screen.

Both of the men looked at each other, then looked back at Yukie who was still leaning on the cabinet behind her.

“Answer it!” told the man. The sound the gun clicked, signaling her that there were nothing she couldn’t do instead of answering your phone call. She reached the phone slowly with the gun still pointing at her, hand’s shaking until she finally swipe to answer the phone. “Put it on speaker.”

Y/n: “Hey, Yukie! Are you still at the cafe? I think I left my wallet there, so can you please keep that for me?”

Yukie: “S-sure!”

Y/n: “Okay, thanks! Uhm- are you okay? Why do I feel like your voice is shaking?”

Yukie didn’t want to reply, but the man who referred to Kenjiro's glance to her is getting sharper.

Yukie: “I- I’m okay.”

Y/n: “Ah… okay, by the way, I’ve decided what I’m going to do next, maybe I need your little help with that, tell me when you are done with your shift.”

The first man abruptly took away Yukie’s phone and spoke to her.

“Good luck with that… Y/n.”

Yukie immediately activated her quirk, blowing a medium rain of spider lily, just to distract those men. Her quirk was not really helpful for combat style, but at least she could distract them to get away.

But it is no use.

She immediately ran to the back door, but these men were fast. She almost reached the doorknob but unfortunately, one of the men pulled the trigger and hit right through Yukie’s upper hand. She fell to the ground, it was her first time encountering something like this. It was different from the training she had once she was still in highschool. It truly is painful.

Hopefully, Kayano arrived, opening the front door, the scene he was witnessing was a total mess.

“Kayano, run!” Yukie commanded him. But he was too slow, too slow to realize what just happened in front of him. The gun, which was first pointed at Yukie, now is pointing at Kayano. Pulling the trigger off, he was about to dodge the bullet but he was too late. The gun had already been shot, hitting Kayano’s right shoulder.

The phone call was still on.

“I bet you don’t want to see your lovely friends die without even saying goodbye for the last time.” And then he hung up the phone call.
