The Pools

Summary:

During the day, omegas are shinobi who serve Konoha. At night, however, they return to The Pools, underground caverns where they serve Alphas. And when they are in heat, omegas born to clans are sent to the omega heat barracks, where they are bred by Konoha-approved Alphas in the service of their clans.
Hatake Kakashi, a jōnin, a teacher, and an omega, has always managed to avoid the heat barracks. But he cannot avoid every Alpha. Nor can he, ultimately, avoid the truth of his own life and experience in Konoha.
Now, he must find a way to forgive, to care, and to accept the precious connections in his life. No matter how hard it gets.

OR, in which K tries to write an actual summary instead of just lifting a passage from the story, and the summary is just not as cool as the story. Sorry, everyone; I tried!

Updates Wednesdays (~16:00 UTC, depending on my personal schedule): updates may be sporadic until I get my new meds/life/everything (and setting up a silversmithing studio!!) worked out.

A significant departure from my normal (relatively fluffy?) writing style...

Notes:

Tagged Graphic Depictions of Violence because let's be real, these be ninjas. Tagged Rape/Non-Con because that's quite honestly a huge theme in this story. Tagged Underage for events which are mentioned briefly in the narrative in chapter 229. Tagged Dead Dove, Do Not Eat for events beginning in chapter 275 due to... just... everything. (The Dead Dove, Do Not Eat portion is well-marked, and the story should make sense even if you skip that part. Narrative Dead Dove, Do Not Eat content is mostly/essentially resolved by chapter 341, though characters continue to discuss Dead Dove content topics thereafter.)

Please mind the tags, which are updated as I post.

Although a huge part of this initial story was something I experienced one night in a dream, I alo want to credit You Feel Like Home (and i don't know why) by Vulcanhighblood as being an inspiration for the premise as well as inspiration to help me make my dream more cohesive when I started writing it out. Go check out Vulcan's work(s!)!

(See the end of the work for more notes and other works inspired by this one.)

Chapter 1: The Pools

Notes:

Part of Chapter 1 is somewhat graphic and quite unpleasant in the last bit, particularly after the phrase, Akadō Yoroi, genin, 23 years old. The rest of the story is, generally speaking (other than the final arc, which is clearly marked and may be skipped), far less so, but Chapter 1 establishes the world and certain rules and expectations held within the world. There is dubiously-consensual intercourse and omega subjugation. If you prefer to skip that portion, I suggest resuming reading at, "Kakashi collapsed down to the mat, his whole body throbbing." (Click the asterisk (*) to skip to that portion.)

In other news, most of the first half portion tiny bit (this story got way bigger than I thought it would!) of this story was lifted almost directly from a dream I had. The graphic/unpleasant part was only a small part of my dream, and I found the overall setting and concept interesting (and beautiful!) enough that I wanted to revisit it to write this story and to discover the ending.

I hope you find it as intriguing as I did!

With love,
~K

Chapter Text

Kakashi woke languidly, water lapping comfortably at his bare back and side, pleasantly warm even compared to the warm, humid air of his hidden little cavern.  Somewhere far away, the sound of water crashing echoed pleasantly.  Water spilled out of sight from one pool, over stone, and into another pool in crystalline falls.  Even this pool, where Kakashi woke, overflowed into a pool down below in a lullaby of water.  He particularly liked this pool not just for the white noise of its falls but also because it was high up in the caverns, tucked out of the way, and most of the Alphas didn't seem to know about it.  Or perhaps they simply didn't care to climb this high to seek their fix.

Whatever the reason, Kakashi found that he was typically left alone when he dozed here, lying in the warm, shallow water that made him feel just a little bit weightless.

He stretched pleasantly and reached up with one hand to tousle his own hair.  The hair at the nape of his neck was damp from the water despite the fact that his head had been elevated on a smooth rise of stone that acted as a surprisingly comfortable pillow.  The mask around his throat had, as usual, wicked water up into his hair.  He hardly took notice.

He stood in a single graceful movement and dived into the pool with barely a splash, moving like an otter, swimming through crystal-clear water almost playfully.

He came up from the water and shook his head, spraying water hither and thither.  Once his hair was at least no longer dripping water into his eyes, he swam back to the edge of the pool to climb out of the water.

He ignored the water running in streams down his body.  The temperature in the caverns was not unpleasantly cool on even wet skin.

His ANBU training allowed him to move almost silently over smooth, damp stone.  Chakra in the soles of his feet — not much, but enough — kept his steps sure even as he descended down the vertical side of the wall.

He reached an outcropping of rock and leapt from it, diving the distance of several stories.  He plunged like an arrow into the deep pool at the bottom of the rock, shooting through the water before effortlessly kicking back up to the surface of the water.

A handful of people, men and women alike, lounged around the edge of this pool, waking up, barely registering the presence of one new person in their midst.  Only a few people spoke to one another in low, calming voices, creating a lulling murmur that echoed softly through the cavern.

Kakashi climbed out of the water, nodding in silent greeting at a young woman sprawled across one of the couches, and whose crimson-eyed gaze had snagged, briefly, on his own.  But he passed her without a single shared word between them.  He rarely spoke to the others down here, though they would converse easily aboveground.

He, like most of the others, ignored the couples who openly fornicated on the couches or rush mats scattered around the caverns, some in shadowed niches and some out in the open.  Some, he recognized as pairs of omegas.  He saw one Alpha already buried deep in a moaning, panting woman.  Early start to the day, Kakashi supposed, but it hardly mattered to him as long as he wasn't the one providing service to the Alpha.

He made his way down the worn stone path to the falls that were used for bathing.  The roar of water grew louder as he descended further into the cavern, to the bottom of the springs where everyone knew to do their washing and not their drinking.

His first stop was at the toilets, to relieve himself of the silicone plug buried in his body and of his body's waste.  He grabbed his hygiene kit from the cubby in the wall, flipped the little sign on the handle to indicate it was in use, pulled open the door, and stepped in.  With focused effort, he stuck his palm to the door with just enough chakra to pull it closed behind him.  It had no handle on the inside, nor did the door lock, but he was used to that.  Everyone knew that you didn't disturb someone in one of the stalls.  Even Alphas usually respected that rule.

A sink and tap — the only artificially-running water in the lower caverns, other than in the kitchen and the toilets — provided him space to wash the plug without contaminating the water of the caverns.  He pulled out the plug with the faintest wince, dropping it in the sink to deal with later, and relieved himself.  Only then did he wash the plug, thoroughly, using the mild, scentless soap beside the sink.

He stuck out one foot, heel on the floor, holding the door closed with another focused swirl of chakra in his toes.  It was the closest he could come to locking the door, and to wash his mask, he felt the extra energy expenditure was worth it.

He pulled the mask off, sliding it out from beneath the collar around his throat and over his head, and washed it in the basin.  Once it was clean, he took the time to brush his teeth and shave before he pulled the wet thing back over his head, tugging the bottom with difficulty back beneath the collar and keeping the wet fabric over his nose and mouth.

He made a mental note to pick up soap on his next trip to the surface; the calendar etched in the stone wall indicated that he would be one of the people expected to refill the soaps, toilet paper, lubricant, and other necessities this evening.

He slid the plug back into his body before leaving the toilet stall, putting away his hygiene kit, and going over to the falls.

He stepped beneath the crashing water, shivering — the water was coldest here, at the bottom of the caverns — reaching into the niche cut into the stone for scentless soap and a chunk of porous volcanic rock, ignoring the porous stones floating in the pool around him, ignoring the many others who also bathed in the falls.  Everyone was getting ready to go up to the surface for the day.

He washed his hair before scrubbing his body gently with soap and the lightweight stone, throwing his head back to feel the water striking his masked face and bare body, beating away tension and tiredness from his limbs.

Finally feeling mostly awake, he began making the ascent up the path to the gateway to the surface.

A male Alpha was descending from the surface as Kakashi walked the path.

He barely caught the flash of predatory hunger in the Alpha's scent before the man crowded Kakashi through one of the archways toward another one of the pools.

Akadō Yoroi, genin, 23 years old, Kakashi's brain supplied dispassionately as the Alpha's mouth descended onto the port wine stain at the juncture of Kakashi's neck and shoulder.*

The Alpha sucked, painfully hard, on Kakashi's mark, drawing out scent and flavor and Kakashi's arousal.  Kakashi groaned, feeling his flesh twitch and grow firm at the sensation on his shoulder, and he automatically tipped his head back to give the Alpha better access to the mark.

He put his hands up, though, pressing back against the Alpha's clothed chest, trying to respectfully create space between them.

"I apologize; I need to report in to the Hokage, Alpha-san," Kakashi breathed softly, deferentially.  "I'm sure there are many omegas who would be happy to serve you this morning, though."

He didn't expect the hard backhand across the face, splitting his lip beneath the mask, and he stumbled backward, his natural eye going a hair wider.

"Alpha-san," he tried again.

"Disrespectful omega," the Alpha growled.  "You'll go to the surface when I say you can go to the surface."

Kakashi narrowed his eye and exhaled, torn between suppressing the killing intent that would activate the collar around his throat and just giving into a resigned sort of acceptance of what he knew was to come.  "I have an appointment with the Hokage, Alpha-dono."

"Shut up," the Alpha hissed, striking Kakashi again, sending Kakashi stumbling backwards a step.  "You'll address me with -sama, insolent omega."

Kakashi felt his hands curl into fists, and he had to remind himself to hold himself back.  Fighting back against this Alpha simply wasn't worth the debilitating pain and paralysis the collar would inflict on him.

"Yes, Alpha-sama," he said, turning his face down, ignoring the throbbing in his cheekbone.  It might be broken, he observed without feeling.

Instead, he obediently backed up until his foot hit one of the rush mats scattered everywhere, and he laid down, opening his body to the Alpha standing over him.

"On your hands and knees," the Alpha said jeeringly.

Obediently, Kakashi turned and got onto his hands and knees, presenting his plugged hole to the Alpha.  Behind him, he heard the Alpha pull down the uniform trousers he wore.

The Alpha yanked out the plug, and Kakashi couldn't hold back the soft cry at the violence of the removal.  The plug was tossed aside carelessly.

"Good," the Alpha growled, his voice feral and predatory.  "Let me hear you scream."

The Alpha plunged, dry, into Kakashi, and he was so big, tearing Kakashi's insides, and Kakashi did scream at the sudden, shocking pain, collapsing to his elbows on the mat.  He had been taken like this, violent and dry, only a few times in the past.  It never got easier.

"So tight," the Alpha was saying, "so good, omega, you feel so good, you sound so good when you scream—"

Kakashi could barely hear the Alpha over his own choked-back screams and sobs as the Alpha pulled out and drove violently back in, over and over, nails cutting into Kakashi's too-bony hips.  All Kakashi could do was press his forehead to the rush mat, his eyes squeezed closed against tears of pain, as the Alpha beat into him relentlessly.

He felt the slide become easier and knew that it was his own blood lubricating his body for the Alpha.  Add a quick trip to the medical nin to get the tissue repaired before he went out on his mission—

Brutal minutes passed as the Alpha continued gleefully drawing out Kakashi's cries of pain with stabbing thrusts that tore tender, sensitive tissue.  And then he felt the Alpha pull out for a brief moment, and he couldn't hold back the sigh of relief.

He chanced a look between his legs and saw, with growing dread, that the Alpha was putting a ring on himself to extend his own pleasure at Kakashi's expense.

The Alpha slammed without warning back into Kakashi, and Kakashi screamed again, hands scrabbling at rush and smooth stone as the Alpha pounded him into the ground and his body tried mindlessly to flee the tearing pain.

He cried out and yelled and heard his own screams ricocheting off wet stone, echoing back at him mockingly.  He sobbed, biting down into the rush mat, and felt it torn from his mouth.

"I said I want to hear you," the Alpha snapped furiously, slamming into Kakashi again, and Kakashi obediently screamed with the sharp pain that never got easier to endure, and it was all he could do to pray that the Alpha didn't want to knot him, because just the thought made tears run from Obito's eye to soak into his mask.

The Alpha pulled himself free of Kakashi and slid his erection between Kakashi's buttocks and onto Kakashi's back, and he leaned down over Kakashi's back and bit down, hard enough to draw blood, at Kakashi's neck just below the collar.  Kakashi yelled as teeth ground painfully down on his spine and hot fluid spurted over his back.

Kakashi collapsed down to the mat, his whole body throbbing.

"Thanks for a good time, omega," the Alpha said with a smirk, wiping himself clean on Kakashi's body.

"Your service is my pleasure, Alpha-sama," Kakashi managed to force out in almost a normal tone of voice, despite his gritted teeth and the tears of pain still burning his eyes.

Kakashi heard him pull his trousers back on.  Kakashi didn't move until he heard the Alpha leave.

He kept himself from vomiting from the pain through sheer force of will.  Even with the plug that kept him stretched and prepared to serve an Alpha, this particular Alpha had been too painfully large.

Kakashi had enough of a mind to be grateful that the Alpha had chosen not to knot him.  The mere thought of serving an Alpha dry and then receiving the honor of the Alpha's knot sent a shiver that he refused to identify as fear through him.

Shaking, he forced himself to stand up and collect his plug.  Without a sound, he lubricated the plug with the contents of the nearest bottle of lubricant and slid it — excruciatingly — back into himself before limping back down to the falls to wash once more.
