Chapter Text

Feet and talons scrapped against wooden walkways, passing many other rito headed towards their homes for dinner you ducked between them. Your body was sore and tired, but you had to make it to the general store before it closed for some goat butter and some sunshroom to combine with the rock salt and hylian rice you had on hand for dinner. It made a lovely mushroom riotto, it was far from your favorite but it was a warm meal to eat before you had to go home from this small little break. Luckily you got there just before the bird was about to move from behind the counter to leave, she smiled at you.

"I suppose you want some goat butter and the sunshrooms?" She asked with a gentle kindness that was a relief from the days worries

You nodded, "Yes ma'am, I only need one of each."

The bird nodded with a smile moving out from behind the counter to gather the items, she was an old bird but had a passion for what she did her memorization of what you buy. She placed the items she gathered on her counter, four sunshrooms and three goat butter. You were about to protest as you only had enough rupees for one of each, but you got playfully shushed by the older rito.

"Don't worry too much about it little fledgling, it's the last of the stock for the night that would get tossed out anyway." She chuckled gesturing to your satchel, "Besides I don't mind, I want you eating after all."

You were quiet for a moment shifting on your feet swallowing a little, "I... Thanks, but I hope this isn't because of who my parents are.."

She shook her head, "I hardly see them in my store, but..." She drawled scratching her chin before pointing at you, "I am talking to one of my favorite regulars."

Involentarly your feathers fluffed up, you panicked a little in an attempt to smooth them causing the older rito to laugh. The rest of the transaction was quick, she gave you the items for the price of one each, that being discounted even. Packing the things neatly in your satchel you started to a landing before taking off into the purple dusk sky. You closed your eyes for a moment enjoying the slight chill of the air around you ruffling your feathers.

If your parents could see the way you were flying, more gliding, with no flare or precision like that has been drilled into your head. It was just how they were, they were quite famous for the way they flew, well technically more danced. Sky dancers, rito who moved with grace and beauty with movements both on the walkways and the air, your parents were some of the best most respected of these dancers. Thus why you spent most of your time at home dance training, leaving you sore and achy.

Landing the snow crunched beneath your feet quickly you jogged between the cold gray rocks towards the flight range, it wasn't somewhere you had gone often but you hoped you would get some alone time to eat while listening to the updrafts whistle against the rocks. Quickly ascending the ladder you found the cooking pot resting above a dwindling flame you quickly got to work making your little meal. The fire warmed your front and feathers and you closed your eyes to enjoy the feeling of the warmth for a moment before beginning to cook.

Tossing in the ingredients you winced a little at the smell but regardless you stirred them together and left them to simmer and cook together. You watched the pot humming a soft little peppy melody as it did its thing. The pep soon left you as you pulled your legs to your chest, wings encasing you from the outside world nuzzling your beak between your knees you frowned as you wished your parents would sit down and have a nice meal with you once in awhile. They just, it was hard to explain, you know you had your place between them and a heavy lineage to keep up but it would be nice for once in awhile to take a break and have some happier moments of just peace.

The sound snow crunching caused you to jerk your head up and stare at the end of the ladder it didn't take long for the hand of a prussian blue wing to press against the floor followed by the owner of said hand who stiffened in surprise seeing you sitting there. So it was a standoff, two young rito staring at one and other as though not expecting the other to be there. Slowly you reached for your spoon as your meal had began to hiss as it was close to being done, so again you slowly began to stir the food.

"So..." You started darting your eyes to the side before back at him, "Are you here for the... Updraft?"

The blue rito nodded a little and climbed the rest of the way up. He was a scraggly looking bird with ruffled and dirty feathers and thin he held a clearly makeshift bow that seemed ready to snap at a moments notice. You watched as he padded his way to the bridge leading to the open air, he leaned forward a little judging the drop only to have his head feathers sharply smoothed back. He took a step back a little shocked at just how strong the updraft was, turning to look at your food you spoke.

"It's not as bad as it initially feels," You hummed stirring the food a little more, "It does take a little while to get used to it."

"I-" He heaved a breath, "The ones by the village aren't as powerful..."

"Yeah," You scratched the back of your head, "But didn't your parents take you here to teach you how to fly?"

There was an awkward silents behind you causing you to turn quizzically as the blue rito shifted on his feet, "My mother... Forgot to teach me?" He offered, "So I had to teach myself, and I'd say I'm pretty good!.... Hopefully."

You blinked in surprise staring at the other bird before shaking your head, "Do you want... help? Cause you need to be able to fly before you can shoot..."

He shifted the bow to hide it more behind himself, "Yeah... But I don't want to you to bother, after all aren't you-"

"Yes," You sighed turning back to the food, "But I don't really get to fly much, it's a lot of footwork. Come eat and then I'll help you out."

It took the other rito a few moments to accept your offer, after all it was one of his favorites. He plopped himself down beside you and blinked when you handed him a plate. You began to eat quietly staring at the empty pot, you were glad you had made a little extra.

"I'm sure you probably know my name is (y/n) but I haven't seen you much around the village, so what's your name." You asked between bites glancing at the other rito for a moment

He had already finished his dish by the time you asked, "Oh, My name is Revali, but it's nice to meet you in person, I've heard a lot about how..." He trailed off trying to find the words, "Special you are?"

You shook your head a little, "I'm not that special it's just my parents reputation." You sighed and stood up, "But it's nice to meet you as well Revali, are you ready to get started?"

"I um, yeah, I am." He said standing

"Okay show me what you know."

"Huh?"

Chapter 2: Baby Flutters

Chapter Text

After that first night where you had run into Revali you started to eat your dinner at the Flight Range every night. And slowly but surely you helped the rito grow more confident in his flying, it was a nice respite from your home. Something that you had began to look forward too.

"You seem distracted." You paused mid motion but quickly resumed

"What do you mean, father?" The question was quiet as you slowly turned wings moving in tandem

You jerked a little at the strike of a stick against a misplaced foot that you quickly moved into its proper place, "You've been making more mistakes than usual, a clouded mind does not a dancer make."

Your reply was simple a nod gaze remaining low as you finished the set, with along with a few more strikes from the rightening stick. The review of the days performance was poor and your dismissal was curt and disapproving, it didn't matter though as you ran off to take off for the Flight Range and Revali.

Landing neatly you jogged through the soft snow you rubbed at a spot where your wing had been struck, it still stung but it was far from intolerable. Clambering up the ladder you were pleasantly surprised to find the blue rito already there, with something cooking away in the pot as he tinkered away at his bow. He looked up at your approach, he looked more ruffled than usual but he seemed happy upon seeing you. The warm smell of what he was cooking drew you in close so you took a seat beside him with a tired sigh.

No words were exchanged as the two of you sat there together just watching the food cook. That was until you felt a handle cloth on the stinging wound on your wing, surprised you turned to look at Revali who blinked at you for a moment as though embarrassed lowering the cloth a little.

"You... You should clean this.. so it doesn't get infected..." he mumbled glancing away and offering you the cloth

A warmth spread over your chest as you gently took it, "... Thank you Revali."

Finally facing the rito boy you took notice of the shine under his left eye you subconsciously reached up to touch it but he flinched away from the touch and you hesitated before deciding better and placing your wing down. Instead to turned your gaze to his bow instead and noticed just how beat up it was, you've never seen him shoot it but it just looked like it wouldn't last long.

"Do you... Do you plan on being a part of the guard one day?" You asked hesitantly running your fingers along the uneven edges of the bow, "Cause this is an.... an interesting bow did you make it yourself?"

Revali perked a little at the question and gently lifted the bow so you could study it a little more, "Yeah... Kinda. Pieced together from a swallow and falon bow, though I'm still working out some of the kinks..." He mumbled tightening the string, "It doesn't shoot straight on, and the body is kinda wobbly."

You nodded a little as you ran a few feathers down the string strung nicely between the two ends, "Well I think it's still super cool, I could never make something like this." Humming you shifted your gaze to the targets attached to the rocky outcrops, "Have you tested it in the air?"

"What? No, it's much to flimsy for that yet." Revali said fiddling with the hand-hold of the bow

"Well you should try it, because that's the best way to test things isn't it?" You said standing up, "Besides you're getting pretty good at flying and you'll have to shoot and fly at the same time."

Revali stood with a soft chuckle, "I guess, I've watched the guards train so I've kinda gotten it."

"Yeah! You'll need to practice anyways!" You chirped, "Because to be the best takes a lot of dedication and time!"

Revali stared at you for awhile eyes wide, "I.. Um..."

Blinking you rubbed the back of your head with a soft chuckle, "Well you don't have to be the best now... but someday in the future!"

He nodded a little silent as he placed his bow across his back. Taking a good couple steps down the walk way you leapt and dove into the quick moving air, wings opening your feathers caught the wind and sent you skyward. You laughed as you passed Revali still on the walkway steeling his nerves for the jump, shifting a little to stop rising in the and hover a little and wait for the other rito to join you. The loud yelp that was quickly followed by the flailing prussian blue bird, it took him a moment to gain his bearings and righten himself.

"Still not used to it?" you chuckled floating closer to the bird just trying his best

"Y-yeah, it's always a lot-" He mumbled focusing on ruffling his feathers a little the wind picking up a few loose feathers and sweeping them away

You simply giggled in reply and closed your wings and arched yourself backwards to descend once again, twisting yourself giving a slight spin on your decent. Enjoying the feeling of the quick wind whipping through your feathers, before you reached the water at the bottom you opened your wings once again and shot practically straight upwards almost knocking against Revali. Your laughter followed as he looked up at you as he hovered a little in one spot.

As the sun settled down behind the mountains and the flight range grew dark you both finished the last of the delicious creamy meat soup that Revali had made. Said blue rito was adjusting his bow, he only hit one of the targets, but hey, one is better than none. Humming contently you placed the empty bowl down and pat your stomach a little.

"You should make dinner more often Revali that was delicious!~" You laughed glancing at the boy

"O-oh? You liked it? It's not really my favorite dish, but it's the only one I can make." He mumbled not looking at you, "But I'm glad you like it at least."

Nodding a little you rubbed your face and glanced towards the exit of the range, looking back towards Revali you smiled a little at his focus on the bow. This was nice, you wish you could stay here forever like this, block out the real world and remain in this peaceful moment with your new friend. Bringing your knees to your chest you watched Revali tinker away with the bow no sound other than the faint crackle of the dying fire and the low howl of the wind.

"How come you don't eat with your family?" You perked when Revali suddenly spoke

"What do you mean?" You asked sitting up a little straighter

"Like," He started smoothing some of his neck feathers, "You always come here and make food and stuff, I just wanted to know why?"

Sighing you glanced away, "I.... Mmm. I don't..." Closing your eyes a little frowning deeply before looking up, "My parents want to eat dinner together without me around. I'm used to it though." You shrugged and looked at Revali, "What about you? You only come here to train and not eat?"

"I... No, my family.... Doesn't want me hanging around them too much.." He placed his bow down, "Especially after my father died my mom kinda pushed me from the nest to make room for her husband and new kid." He plucked a few loose feathers from his arm, "They'll let me in occasionally for a place to sleep, but they want me gone by the morning." He shrugged a little, "It doesn't bother me too much, I'm more focused on becoming a guard and maybe making them proud."

You were quite for a moment before giving the boy a smile, "And I'm sure you will, I can see it now, you partoling the front bridge keeping the village safe!" You lightly punched his arm, "And I'll make sure you're eating and keep you up on your flying!"

Revali chuckled, "I'm sure you will, and I'll always be around if you ever want to hang out, but I'm sure you'll be busy doing sky dancing and stuff."

You cringed a little at the statement, you could barely imagine yourself in the path laid down before you, "Yeah, maybe we'll see.." You chuckled a little rubbing the back of your neck, "As long as we can stay friends."

"We're friends?" Revali asked surprised

You blinked just as surprised, "Yeah? I like hanging out with you! And want to get to know you better!"

The prussian blue bird's feathers shot up making him look twice his size causing you to laugh loudly fluffing your feathers in amusement, "Revali you're so amusing, well I should get back home, see you same time tomorrow?" You asked offering him a hand to help him up

"Y-yeah of course!" Revali quickly grabbed your hand to stand beside you just glowing with joy, it was just infectious

With that you took off towards home for the night, it was chilly but your heart was warm and happy. An excitable chick had just hatched within you and you just couldn't wait to get to know your new friend more.

Chapter 3: Feather Plucking

Chapter Text

"Ow! Stop it!" Revali cried out dramatically as you plucked out a feather from his back.

"Stop being dramatic! If you don't want people to think you are a dirty vagabond, you have to at least not look like one!" You replied searching for more of his crumpled ill kept feathers to pluck so they can grow back in properly.

You have known Revali for years now at this point, growing up with him and helping him become a stronger and stronger flier. The two of you are far from grown up, but that doesn't mean your friend should look like a messy child!

"Stop plucking my feathers so rough!" The prussian blue rito snapped his head turning to glare at you over his shoulder as you pulled another feather out.

Rolling your eyes pushed yourself away from him with a huff, "Fine then look like you fell down the mountain."

Turning away from him you stood up stretching with a soft groan, walking over to the cook pot you stirred the meal simmering away. You tried not to giggle at the grumby grumbling from the rito behind you, complaining about the fact that you stopped preening his feathers leaving him looking half kept and a little crazy. Soon the other bird joined you by the food glaring intently.

The two of you allowed the silence to hang comfortably in the air, the loud howl of the wind echoing through the rocks of the flight range. Winter would soon be arriving, causing a even colder chill to sweep over the village. Along with the winter performance the Sky Dancers will do. You had been performing for years now with sweeping wings and beautiful movements. Soon you would be expected to lead a performance and properly take your predetermined path, the one your parents had planned for you ever since you were young, what you were training for.

"What are you pouting about?" You jumped when Revali spoke turning your head to face him.

"What do you mean? I don't pout!" You said defensively feathers ruffling in annoyance.

Revali laughed shaking his head, "You're a lot easier to read than you think! It's always easy to see how your feeling from your eyes, so tell me what's wrong or just stew in it." He shrugged a little reclining back in an attempt to mask his worry for you.

Sighing you shook your head a little, "It's nothing major, just thinking about the Winter Solstice performance..."

"You mean the one you called 'Stupid easy' and 'You could do it in your sleep'?" He asked with a smug chuckle, that caused you to laugh softly at his words calling back to what you had said on several different occasions, "Why are you worrying so much about it anyways? The Winter Solstice performance is easy and short."

"It's... It's hard to explain... Cause the Winter Solstice performance, then after that the spring prefromacne, and then on and on and on..." You turned your gaze back to the food bubbling away at the food, "I just... I dunno it's dumb, just an infinite number of performances in a never ending loop. Feels like that is my only value... I'm just being ridiculous is all."

"I don't think that's ridiculous." Revali spoke softly leaning closer a little gently stirring the food in the pot, "I mean I get wondering and thinking about your value and where it is. So I guess it's really about finding where your value lies and pursuing it. Like me and the pursuit to be the best guard, that's where my value will be, if yours isn't with Sky Dancing? Why keep should you keep doing it?"

His words surprised you, no one has ever suggested that you don't have to be a Sky Dancer. Your entire life has been entwined with it for as long as you could walk you were working on being a dancer, everyone around you always said and encouraged you down this path. Laughing softly you leaned against him gently pressing shoulder and shoulder to him.

"What book did you steal those words from?" You teased playfully, forcing down the rush of emotion of the idea of not following the path your parents so carefully, it has just given you something to think about and unpack for later.

"Ack! How dare you assume that those words are not from the heart! I pulled those out for my friend in need, to guide her!" Revali squawked indiginently at you his feathers ruffling at your taunt about his kind words of wisdom.

Giving him a cheeky look you raised an eyebrow narrowing your eyes playfully, "I can't take you seriously with your feathers only half preened."

The rito glared at your words, though you weren't wrong, he did look a little ridiculous. Even under all those ruffled and unkept feathers he was growing up to be quite handsome, his baby feathers had began to molt out, leaving a beautiful dark blue feathers framing a strong slim face. It was stunning, seeing your friend grow and change over the years, it was truly an honor to know him. Lifting a wing you stroked your feathers along his cheek, his expression lifting in surprise at the touch, leaning into the tender action.

Until you plucked a crumpled feather from his cheek causing him to squawk out in surprise and pain.

"Ow hey!"

"Don't be such a baby."

Chapter 4: Future Roosts

Notes:

Heyy uwu. Bird romance.

Chapter Text

"C'mon Revali..." You murmured in a hushed voice watching him skillfully move about flight range.

Very arrow nocked with quick precision, every shot perfectly timed. This had been his best ever run of the course, body and bow one. The way he moved was like he was made to be doing it, made to be in this moment right now. So you watched from the platform with baited breath as each arrow snapped into the targets, sending the pieces upward with the winds of the updraft.

As he nocked the last arrow, aiming at the final target. He drew the string backwards, taking aim-- Before the bow snapped under this grip sending the arrow sputtering pathetically down. With a cry of anger he tossed the remnants of the falcon bow down Revali landed hard on the catwalk.

"Great Hylia! I have never seen any of the guards struggle with these bows in the same way I have!" The blue bird yelled at the pathetic shards of the bow on the ground, before he kicked them into the fire below the cook pot simmering your meal away.

"The falcon bow lasted longer than the sparrow at least." You pointed out watching as he dropped down sitting beside the cook pot.

You joined him sitting neatly beside him with a sigh, you reached up and carefully pulled some loose feathers out as he continued to rant about the bows. Your touch was gentle as you rifled though his feathers, preening your friend up. His feathers really had filled out nicely, he looked more adult despite his short stature.

"If I can't figure out this bow situation I don't think I will be successful in the guard scouting..." Revali grumbled shaking his head a little, "Who wants a guard that breaks every bow he shoots?"

A small frown pulled on your lips as your brows furrowing slightly as you leaned against him, "Hey c'mon now. They've let in folks who can't shoot half as good as you. You'll get in no problem."

"What what if they don't?" He asked his head turning slightly towards you, gazing at you down the slim shape of his beak, "What if all of this really is for nothing? All this work and they don't want some mangy runt?"

Your gaze softened a little hearing his concern, he put up an incredibly brave front, a grandiose facade. A display to show others around the village that he is more than just that poor fledgling kicked out of the rest to early. It really was an honor to get to see this side of him, offer care and comfort.

"You're over thinking it, Revali, it's not like the guards haven't seen you practicing during the day. Heh, I've heard murmurs that they're excited to get you on the squad." You assured gently nudging his hand with your beak as he reached out to preen a couple of your feathers.

He paused gazing at you for a long quiet moment, his hand cupping your cheek gently, stroking just under your eye with a thumb.

"I can't just be on the squad (y/n). I have to be the best." He said his voice low, heavy with implication. Weighed down by something he wasn't quite ready to admit yet, "I have to show them that I am the best. That I am not the worthless baggage they assumed."

"You were never baggage, Revali." You corrected eyes narrowing slightly at the statement

Revali simply chuckled faintly, the sound gentle, amused. His eyes moved from you towards the path leaving the Flight Range as he spoke.

"I want a home in the highest place in the village. Where I could see everything, sorta like being in the air all the time." He said his expression a little wistful as he talked about future things like that.

You tilted your head slightly at the topic change, brows lifting a little at the statement, "That would be neat, seeing the rest of the village like we do when flying... It would be a good way to get any chicks you have used to being up so high."

Revali chuckled faintly as you pointed that out, "Yeah, I guess it would... What about you? What kind of home do you want?"

That was an excellent question, one you weren't really sure how to answer you never really had a preference. Despite your lineage you never had a taste for opulence.

"I dunno... I really like the carvings on the entrance of the chieftain's home... So something with carvings I suppose." You chuckled softly tilting your head back as you thought, "I guess I would just hope my partner had stronger preferences." You added with a small shrug

Revali hummed in acknowledgment nodding slightly to himself.

"What are you gonna do about the Winter Solstice performance? After that it'll be pretty hard to do anything else." Revali commented giving you a sidelong look.

You sighed and closed your eyes shrugging slightly, "I'm not really sure... It's not like I have many other applicable skills. Heh. I could try being a chef."

The Prussian blue bird beside you scoffed, "And poison the whole village with your cooking? maybe something else."

"My cooking is not that bad you ass!" You laughed smacking him on the shoulder for the comment, Revali of course released a loud laugh at your reaction.

Chuckling slightly you shook your head and reclined back slightly looking out over the snowy visage of the land, "But I don't know what I'm going to do Revali... I don't want to be a Sky Dancer, but my options are pretty narrow. And it's not like I wouldn't be good at it... I just wouldn't be happy."

Revali hummed in acknowledgment heaving a heavy sigh. He too was working hard for the slim chance of grabbing at that slippy thing known as happiness. It really was ridiculous the amount of effort needed to be put in for just a glimpse of that joy.

"Well I'll be here for you no matter what happens, be that cheering during a performance... Or sampling your food." Revali said with a dramatic shudder at the thought of your cooking, it made you roll your eyes and smack his shoulder again. He could be a dick.

"Well I'll be here for you even if you aren't the best guard that wows the village with his sheer presence." That got you a playful punch in the shoulder which made you laugh and shake your head, "Anyways I should get going. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Yeah.." Revali said sounding almost longing.

The trip from the Flight Range back to the village was a short flight, even shorter back to your home. Though as you entered you paused seeing both of your parents still up clearly waiting for you.

"Mother... Father." You greeted awkwardly

"(y/n). It's time we talk about the company you're keeping... The quality of said company."

Notes:

Here I am, writing about romance between birds. Hey it makes me happy at least lol. The AU mostly has to deal with the blights/champions and won't be a big part until later in the story, but feel free to ask about it regardless lol. I hope you guys like it!
