Nothing wrong with asking for help

Summary:

A What if! type of story about how Derek Morgan and Spencer Reid's relationship evolve into something deeper then just a friendship, Derek struggling in his new life, and a near death experience bringing the two men close together again, causing their selves to get wrap up in a chaotic, spiralling state of affairs, all takes place soon after Morgan “permanently” leaving from the team/BAU unit.

This is a slowburn!

I don’t really know how long I’m going to make this book… and the update timing will be shitty but heyyy give little old me a chance en? Promise it’s not as boring as it sounds… hopefully:) lol

Edit 2026. Hi, just to make a little statement to bring awareness that the early chapters are under construction. The grammar is shitty so I’m doing lazy housekeeping on them and fixing that, i’m doing it in real time so the chapters are going to change a little— from chapter 1 up to chapter 10 is kinda edited for now.

Chapter 1: Pilot. Part1

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It's been almost 10 weeks since the last time Spencer have seen Derek or have a decent conversation with him, but hey he gets it he have a family of his own now, a new baby.... a Wife, Spencer just have to understand that Derek don't have all the time in the world anymore but it is somewhat weird not having Morgan around almost every day, talking to him and having him help taking down the bad guys, calling him a dork or a genius every five seconds, It's like a unnatural, alternate universe, when he walks into the bullpen everything is the same, his desk and how he do his paperwork, going on cases, seeing Hotch, JJ, Rossi, Emily, Penelope, Alvez and Tara when they were rarely around, but no Morgan, it was like he had the whole puzzle but missing the piece for the middle.

It's wasn’t like he's not a part of Derek life anymore, Derek every once in a while will send him a picture of baby Hank and they try to talk on the phone as much as possible, doesn’t matter if only the calls lasted a few minutes as it usually get cut short, because Hank is crying or needs a diaper change or need to be fed or savannah needs this or that and Derek always have to go, It was always a “sorry man, i’ll try calling tomorrow" and before Spencer even had a chance to reply he was hit with the call ending.

It's been 9 days since the last call between him and Derek, but it might’ve been for the best as Reid became too busy with a case in New York, a  middle-age man was running around, kidnapping young girls, College students in fact from NYU in their early 20s and 3 days after the kidnapping he will dispose their bodies, heads missing and have the  word slut carve on their backs, it was done by a pocket knife, from what Spencer could make out with the look of incision.

It took the team some time but they finally find out why he done it. The guy was reliving his mothers death and trying to duplicate it out on poor, innocent woman, just because of the simple fact he went crazy and develop a obsession after seeing his mother lifeless body laying in the middle of a alleyway somewhere in Brooklyn as a kid in the same state as he did to the woman later in life, his mom she was a prostitute.

Spencer came to the conclusion, of whoever killed her, clearly did it in the heat of passion, a past John of hers? Maybe a so called lover? Perhaps?

After Garcia give the information they need about the guy to finally hunt down the bastard and closing the case, they jump back onto the jet heading straight back to Virginia.

Spencer didn't get home until 6:00 am. he was understandably tired, despite that he desperately still needed a hot shower, so he drag himself to the shower, turning on the water waiting for the temperature to rise as he takes off his clothes.

He scrub himself head to toe, after rinsing his hair free of any lingering shampoo, Spencer step out the shower, running the towel over his wet hair before wrapping around his waist.

When he make it back to his room, Spencer couldn't even bother putting on more than two articles of clothes, after sliding on a clean pair of boxer shorts and a old tee that had a fading picture of Doctor Who on it then Reid  crawl into his bed, under his sheets and covers.

It was a relieving feeling to close his heavy eyelids, just like that, Spencer was out like a light. It was black, nothing, no odd dreams, no nightmares, just sleep, something Reid is very grateful for, it been a while since him being able to sleep without a black cloud hanging over his head.

For once he was sleeping peacefully, until he heard a loud repeating knock on his door that woke him up from his slumber.

Spencer woke up with a groan as he stumble out of bed trying to smooth down his mostly dry, bed hair, he grab a pair of pants, quickly putting it on before he sleepily walks his way through his apartment, stopping mid way to look at the clock, he hum to himself as it was 8:30, Reid did good for himself, getting more than a hour of sleep. Once again he was brought back to reality by hearing the firm knocking on the door "coming!" He yells as he undid the locks on his the door open, forgetting to look through the peep hole as he opens the door.

Spencer try to keep himself together as he stunningly sees who’s waiting on the other end of the door. Derek Morgan, holding a baby carrier in one hand and what he assume was a baby bag slang over his shoulder, a yellow colour.

"Hey, long time, no see" Say the tall, tan man in front of him, Derek have a smile on his, it didn’t match well with is tired eyes, Spencer didn't quite know what to say he was shocked, a bit confused by why Morgan was here and his still foggy, just woke up brain didn’t help with him trying to process anything at the moment.

After a few long seconds, Reid finally somewhat comprehend what's going on and somewhat able to spit out and say "Hey, come in" with a tight smile as he move away from the door to let  the older man inside his apartment.

Derek rubs anything off the bottom of his shoes on the floor mat Spencer have outside his door before walking inside the apartment, he sits down the baby carrier next to the couch onto the floor, then tossing the bag onto the couch before coming face to face with Reid again.

"So, um what have brought you by?" Spencer asked with curiosity in his voice, “Oh, well you know I was in the neighbourhood, haven't seen you in a while and thought it was a great idea for Hank to spend some quality time with his godfather" Derek say, his tone ease as he gives Spencer another smile "Is that so?" Spencer said as he went over to the kitchen, starting a pot of coffee "You remember what I do for work, right?" He said as he slightly turn his head to look Derek in the eye "Yeah?" The older man raise a single eyebrow, leaning against the small kitchen island that sits in the middle of the kitchen.

The younger man scoff as he start moving around the kitchen, going into the cabinet to pull out two plain, black mugs. "Then tell me what's really going on then, the tired eyes? Your whole demeanour is different, you seem a bit drain? To the point you can’t even properly hide your true appearance” Spencer ask. "Wow doctor Reid, what happened to the no profiling each other rule?" Derek say trying to pass it off in a joking manner, not wanting the mood to get too serious.

Once again Morgan's words stop Reid in his tracks, Spencer close the fridge raider door, the small container of half and half in a hand as he turn around to face his friend again. "Your not FBI anymore so technically I can profile you, if I want to" the young agent said before turning around again.

Derek doesn't know what else to do, clearly Spencer was giving him the cold shoulder, Morgan keeps it quiet, not moving from his spot. A few minutes past, the coffee was done brewing, “Thanks” Derek said when Spencer give him a mug  of plain, hot, black coffee, Reid simply nods, grabbing his mug that was full with sugar and some half-and-half, he walked out the kitchen over to living room sitting on the couch, soon Derek follow after him in the living room, sitting next to him on the couch.

"Are you going to tell me why you're really here?" Reid ask again.

Derek let out a sigh, "I did, like I said I was in the neighbourhood” Reid rolls his eyes at that, “No, Derek you wasn't, we live 30 minutes away from each other, 45 with traffic, I live in a apartment building that’s sit in the middle of town, it’s early in the morning and you have a infant with you, so no, i’ll like a reasonable true explanation for why you are here?" The young man asks again now facing the older man.

"Ok ok fine, I'm going crazy, all right you happy? I'm fucking losing my mind Spencer" Derek says as he run a hand over his face. "I haven't sleep for a full 2 hours ever since Hank came home from the hospital, yeah sure he's quiet now and he looks cute but it get ugly, really fast, if I don’t feed him fast enough then he’ll be screaming off his head— like also don't get me started about the weird things that fly out that kid ass too, like I never see somethings so small that can spit up so much and like at night he never wants to for too long and sometimes it feels like I can do everything and Hank still wants more from me and I haven't fuck in also 6 1/2 months man... 6 1/2?" Morgan say with frustration .

Spencer immediately soften at the sight of Morgan, never really seeing him like this before, not really knowing what to do but moving closer to the older man and pulling him into a hug, Derek accept it, hugging the younger man tight.

Spencer melts in Derek arms, painfully remembering how much he missed this, being so close to Morgan.

"What about Savannah, she helps right?" Spencer mumble softly, the tips of his fingers messing around with the sleeve of the dark green tee Derek haves on. "Yeah... you know when she can, if she’s not asleep or heading off to work, Savannah been swamped lately The hospital had her, asking if she could come back early because they were understaffed in the emergency room, she agreed to go back, her mood… it's not the greatest right now, she been a bit… intense, irritable— well you know me I don't like that type of stuff so I leave it alone for now, I just do what I can" Derek explain.

"So, you basically been taking care of Hank by yourself? For how long?” The brunette ask. "Uh about 3 weeks now?” Derek reply.

"And you thought that was great idea? Doing this by yourself?" Spencer question.

"Yeah? What else I was supposed to do Reid?" Derek ask back helpless.

"You could have called me... Penelope You know she loves you, she’ll do anything for you and Hank, you have your mom and sisters, you got people man" Spencer say back softly.

"I didn't want to bother anyone" Derek shrug shoulder.

"No you didn't wanna ask for help… because of your ego" Spencer corrected.

At that Morgan fully pull away from the half hug him and Spencer were in, staring, deep into Spencer eyes. "What you mean my ego? I don't have a ego... I just don't want to mess with anyone, I know how busy y'all can be— my mom and sisters are back in Chicago. They have their lives” Derek said, his dark brows knitting together.)

"Yes you do Derek... you have an ego and in my professional opinion a Superman complex as well" Spencer explain.

"What the hell? No I don't" Derek say back in defence.

”Uh, yes you do” Spencer say, straighten himself up on the couch "Think about it Der, the definition of A Superman complex is an unhealthy sense of responsibility, or the belief that everyone else lacks the capacity to successfully perform one or more tasks. Such a person may feel a constant need to "save" others and, in the process, takes on more work on their own. That's you man l-like how many times you almost got blow up? Or how many times you was ready to sacrifice yourself for a stranger that you don't even know? you got shot more than ten times… like hell you still doing it, your basically taking care of Hank all by yourself… when you know deep down inside you can call one of us for help but you can't... that's just who you are Derek."

Spencer says finally done with the conversation placing his hands he was eagerly moving around as he was talking in his lap.

Derek couldn't really say anything but nod putting his head down sheepishly for a second, Spencer was right, Morgan know he's not the best at asking for help all the time.

"…Yeah— your right Reid" Morgan said, looking Reid in the eyes.

"Yeah well I'm here... the team is still here... we'll all be happy to help, we’re still your friends, you know" Spencer said, a soft smile on his face.

"Thanks man..." Derek replies, smiling back to the younger man.

After that, the two of them ease into conversation, talking about everything and nothing all the same. Spencer telling Derek about the latest case he and the team have been on in New York and how the young doctor was re-reading The Lord of the rings book, Derek talking about the small few minutes, he get to himself, how he been browsing online for auctioneer homes, wanting to do more of his favourite hobby of fixing homes, but then along the way, the both of them got cut off in the middle of their conversation by soft panting and dreamy sighs from the blanket cover baby carrier.

“Look like the king have finally woken up…” Derek smiles, chuckling softly.
