Amenadiel looked around as the music stopped. All the families were back in their own little spaces in the park and Linda was standing in front of him looking confused. Lucifer had told him that if something like this happened she likely wouldn’t remember, which was a shame all things considered.
“Hey, when did you get here?” She offered a polite smile that still held a bit of tension from their previous argument. “Worried we lesser beings might lose our way home?”
“No, I-“ He saw a flash of cashmere out of the corner of his eye as God approached them. “I was bringing Father over, he wanted to see Charlie.” He said loudly so that hopefully the creator would take a hint and go along with his story.
“Hello Linda” She waved. Being on a first name basis with a deity still wasn’t getting any easier. “Are you feeling a bit better now?”
“Did you tell him?” Linda accused Amenadiel. “Oh, or is this an omnipotence thing.” God stood there smiling, he wasn’t going to be proving any answers, as usual.
“Um Father, can you take Charlie for a few minutes? Why don’t you go ahead down the path, we’ll be right behind you.”
“What a wonderful idea son” God took his grandson out of the stroller “I can tell you the story of those trees over there. Tricky things trees.” He started telling the story and quickly outpaced the parents walking in awkward silence behind them. After a few minutes, Amenadiel cleared his throat.
“You know how you say that sometimes what we come up with first isn’t the real thing that is upsetting us?” He kept his eyes on his father and son but glanced briefly at Linda to make sure she heard him.
“That sounds like something I’d say.”
“Well, I don’t think I was upset about Charlie not being an angel because he couldn’t fly. Or because I think angels are better.” He took a breath as the fear sunk into him again. “I think I was upset because that means he’s mortal.” Linda slowed herself to the point of stopping and turned to face Amenadiel head on. He sighed heavily. “When we made the decision to live together and be a family, I knew that as a human I would eventually have to watch you go through a life cycle. That I would at some point lose you.” He put his hand over hers on the stroller handle and squeezed. Linda squeezed back. “But I thought-“
“You thought you would have Charlie forever.” Linda finished the sentence. Amenadiel nodded, his emotions coming to the surface. “But what about after? I mean, You aren’t banned from the Silver City. You’ll see us again.”
“Not before I see you go through a lot of pain.” He sighed. “And that’s why I was upset.” Linda nodded. She could see now how the news, while it would simplify raising their son, would be hard for Amenadiel to process. A particularly boisterous laugh from the creator of the universe caught their attention. It was followed quickly by a cheerful baby giggle.
“Well,” Linda repositioned herself to control the stroller once again. “Guess we should make the best of the good parts then.” She started walking towards God and Charlie before turning back to see her coparent stuck in place by his thoughts. “Coming?”
Amenadiel looked at his family, a feeling of lightness and warmth rushing through him. He smiled and with a nod and a little jog was on his way.
