Love Won't Let You Get Away (Old/Abandoned)

Summary:

It's been years and the only thing on Redd's mind other than money, cons, and surviving, has been Tom Nook. Will a chance encounter let them makeup and start over? Or will history repeat itself?

I have started reworking this series and it can be found at the link below!

Love Won't Let You Get Away
Chapter 1
Love Won't Let You Get Away

“Phew, the Summer heat never gets easier…” Redd said to himself as he waved a fan in front of his face. Redd usually liked the heat, it might have to do with how skinny he is but he loved things like heaters and hot springs. But Summer heat always felt different though. He sat on the deck of his dingy boat on top of a repurposed milk crate. As sweat dripped off his brow, he looked over the vast ocean in front of him, at the islands that dotted the horizon, and at the clouds that lazily drifted across the sky. Needless to say, the kitsune was bored out of his mind.

“Aargh! I’m so friggin hot and bored!” He shouted to the universe, “There's nothing fun to do while I’m workin’!”

Despite what it seemed, Redd was in fact working. He was docked on the “secret” beach over on Island Avalon waiting for people to cover over and buy his wares. Of course, he would be much busier if he didn’t have to hide his boat, but being a notorious conman has its downsides. So, from island to island, town to town, Redd has to keep his business dealings discrete.

Suddenly, something out of the corner of Redd’s eye caught his attention. A lone human rested a ladder against the short cliff face and began climbing down it. Redd knew this human all too well, in fact, he might as well be his favorite customer. Although with Redd’s usual clientele, any customer who didn’t try to beat him up because of a bad deal will always be his favorite.

“Well if it isn’t my favorite Cousin!” Redd shouted at the human as he stood up to greet him.

The human casually walked up to the boat with a smile and a wave. Redd thought about how in all the years this guy has been a repeat customer, not once has he heard him really speak. He figured he might even be mute, that was fine by Redd though, as far as he was concerned he could do enough talking for the both of them and then some, “Come on in! Got some new product to show you!”

They both entered the boat through Redd’s make-shift plastic curtain and headed below deck. Below in the dimly lit room was where the magic happened, where people either walked out happy or as suckers. Nine times outta ten they wouldn't realize they were suckers until Redd was long gone. What the Kitsune mainly dealt in is art. He would mainly sell forgeries but would often steal the real pieces from people worse than him and sell them along with his own forgeries. That way he had SOME sort of a positive reputation. This kid though, this human always managed to find the authentic pieces. Redd always wondered if he was some major art collector. It’s been forever since Redd had tried to run legitimately in those circles and he hadn’t had internet or TV in all that time too. He felt it possible this human was some big wig art aficionado that he just didn’t know about.

Redd had 3 paintings and a statue on sale today along with some furniture. The shaggy-haired human leaned in an inspected each piece and sniffed out the three paintings as forgeries right away. He then looked the statue up and down and gave the fox yokai a thumbs up signaling he would buy it. Redd was certain this human had some sort of cheat sheet or something. He worked so hard on those pieces, so much so that even he almost got them mixed up with the real deal. Still, Redd wasn’t about to strong-arm someone into buying a fake, despite what some people thought he did have some semblance of a conscience.

“You have a very good eye cousin! This right here is the, uhh,” Redd always had a bad habit of forgetting the names of the pieces he was selling. He didn’t have too much time to check their names while he was busy relieving them from the hoarding hands of the rich or stuffy museums that didn't let them be seen by the general public, “Beautiful statue! That’s it yeah!” Redd looked upon the goddess-like appearance of the woman and felt that was a fitting enough title, “Normally I would charge you an arm and a leg, hehe, get it, cuz she doesn’t have any arms? But for a cousin like you, I will let you get away with it for a mere 4,980 bells!”

The human smiled and nodded his head. He reached into his pockets and pulled out a sack of bells. The jingle-jangle sound they made was always music to Redd’s ears. With a snap of fox’s fingers, a small puff of smoke appeared in front of the statue, and as it dissipated a small sign with the word “sold” written across it appeared.

“Don’t worry cousin, I’ll have it shipped to your house as usual! Discreetly and safely of course! Wouldn’t want it being damaged or some crook seeing it in transport and try to steal it! It’s so easy to do” Redd realized he might have said too much and quickly tried to change the topic, “I don’t know why someone would though, personally I think she would look better with a necklace haha! Anyways it was good seein’ ya again cousin! Until next time!” Redd said trying to hurry the human out the door.

The human smiled and waved good-by as he happily trotted up the stairs. Redd let out a sigh when he heard the plastic curtain flap, signaling he had left. Redd looked at a clock he had hanging up, its hour arm had long broken off but Redd was always too lazy to get another one.

He looked up to the statue and sighed, “Might as well get started on gettin' you ready.”

Before he could start though, Redd saw something on the bottom of the stairs. A small magic leaf was resting just on the last step. Red picked it up and pressed his thumb against it. From it came a puff of smoke and a small music box.

This must have fallen out of his pockets…” Redd thought to himself as he looked at the small wooden box in his hand.

Redd thought about taking it for himself and trying to sell it, but the human wasn’t some snobby rich kid hoarding what he can. Redd knew he was donating the art to museums, mainly the one on the island but what it didn’t take he gave to others. Redd examined the music box closer and saw just how intricate the design on it was. Every curve and braid of the design was carved right into the wood. He lifted the lid up and the box immediately began playing a soft melody. Redd swore it sounded familiar but he couldn’t quite place it. Hearing it stirred up an unknown feeling deep in his chest. Redd didn’t know if this was important to the human but either way the thought of keeping it left a very unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach. He knew he had to give it back. He transformed the music box back into its leaf form and began making his way up the stairs.

Redd left the security of his boat and stepped onto the beach. It looked like the human was already gone as the ladder was no longer there. A small cliff like that didn’t stop a kitsune like Redd and he quickly scurried to the top of it. He looked around and saw the familiar human walking further ahead, he was glad he didn’t lose him. Redd had never actually been to the rest of the island so he would have been super lost if he went around looking for the kid.

“Hey cousin!” Redd shouted as he ran towards him waving his arms, “Hey cousin you dropped somethin'!”

Hearing Redd shout got the human’s attention and he quickly stopped and looked back as Redd was running toward him. He got a puzzled look on his face when the fox caught up with him.

“Y’know kid, yer a lot faster than ya look!” Redd said in between his breaths, “You left this at my place.” Redd held the leaf out.

The human look surprised them smiled. He took the leaf from Redd and put it into his pockets. He then took out a small piece of candy and placed it in Redd’s hand. Redd looked at it a bit dejectedly, he didn’t figure he was gonna get anything as thanks for returning it, hell if anything he thought he might accuse him of stealing it. He was hoping if he did get something it would have been bells. Still, Redd wasn’t about to not take the candy, it was still candy.

“Thanks cousin!” Redd said as he stashed the candy into his own pockets for later. The soft melody popped back into Redd’s head and his curiosity grew again, “Mind if I ask what song that music box plays? I swore I’ve heard it before but I can’t quite place it.”

The human opened his mouth and it was as if timed slowed down, was Redd actually about to hear him finally speak? Before the human said anything though at all to familiar voice interrupted them both. From behind the human came heavy footsteps and the sound of someone flipping through paper.

Redd was a bit taller then the human in front of him so he could see clearly who was approaching them. A rather tall and rotund-looking brown raccoon, although Redd knew him to be a tanuki. Tom Nook was walking toward them. If it felt like time slowed when the kid was about to speak it might as well have halted to a snail’s pace for him now. With each step their shared past shot through Redd. The highs, the lows, the love, and the heartbreak. It all hit him at once, and to top it off it looked like Tom had yet to even notice him. He was in some green Hawaiian shirt with his leaf logo all over it, Redd couldn’t get over just how cute he still looked.

“Jay I’ve been looking for you, Chief told me you went this way,” Tom said as he continued to flip through papers on his clipboard, “Now, about the placement of the bridge. Are you sure you want it over the river bend and not the-” Tom casually looked up toward what he assumed would have just been Jay but he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw who was next to him. A skinny orange kitsune in a blue hapi coat and some loose-fitting slacks. His clipboard dropped to the grass below.

“...Tom?” Redd said hesitantly. Redd quickly began mentally berating himself, he had long thought of the day they would see each other again, what he wanted to say, what he wanted to do, and all he could say was Tom’s damn name.

“Redd? I-Is that really you?” Tom looked at the man in front of him as his own memories flooded back.

There was a lingering moment of silence as the two locked eyes, the only sounds were the breeze flying over the grass and Jay’s awkward shuffling as he didn’t know quite what to do or what was going on here. As they stared into each other’s eyes, Redd found that his tail began to gently wag as a smile began to form across his face. Nook however found that his brows began to furrow and a heat quickly built up inside him.

“Get off my island!” Tom loudly demanded and he pointed to the fox, “Get off my island right now you shifty-eyed crook!”

Redd appeared to be unfazed by this as his smile only grew wider, “You do remember me Nook!”

“How could I ever forget you!”

“Aww you’re still so sweet!”

“That’s not something you should be happy about!” Nook quickly got into the fox’s personal space and glared him dead in the eyes with a look that could have bore holes into a mountain, “Get off this island now Redd!”

Despite the fact he was looking at someone which murder in their eyes, Redd couldn't help but be happy, in fact he hadn’t been this happy in a long time, “There is no way I’m leaving now! Not after I finally found you!” Redd said as he opened his arms wide and went in for a hug only to be stopped by Tom who pressed his fist against the fox’s cheek to stop him from getting any closer

While all this was going on Jay was at a loss for what to say or do. He just fidgeted back and forth looking between the two of them. He had never seen Tom angry like this before. Redd however seemed like he had never been happier. Jay was so confused about what was going on.

Redd still had his arms out and was at this point, playfully leaning against Tom’s fist, “Nookie baby there is no way I’m leaving this island now that you're here!”

“Don’t you dare call me that!” Tom shouted as he stepped back from the fox who quickly fell to the ground due to the sudden loss of support. Redd quickly gained his composure and got onto his knees to look up to Tom.

“Nook, please give me another chance!” The fox pleaded, “I’ve changed!”

The tanuki rolled his eyes and let out a sigh indicating just how familiar he was with that statement, “How many times have I heard that before? This is just another one of your cons and I am not falling for it!”

Redd inched closer to Tom as he clasped his hands together, “I know I’ve said that before, a bunch. But I’m serious this time Nook! I’ve actually been making progress!”

“You’ve already tried this on me before, do you seriously think it’ll work again?!” Nook asked, the vitriol in his voice was so thick it was as if it could be cut right out of the air.

“I’ve made progress! I’ve stopped stealing innocents! I only steal from criminals and people who deserve it! There is still a con or two here and there, but even that has been dying down! It's only when I need the money but I make sure I don’t target people who can’t afford it. I’ve even been paying off my debts to people, hell I’m almost done!”

“I don’t believe you!” Tom quickly shot back, “I’m not repeating myself again! Get off this island!”

Redd stood up, still unmoved. He felt the moment he has been dreaming of is finally close at hand and he wasn't about to let it pass him by. Finally, him and Tom could be happy again, like they used to be. He wasn’t about to let this slip through his hands now, “No, now that I know you’re here Nook I’m going to stay! I’m not losing you again! I won’t rest till I show you how much I’ve changed and how much you mean to me!”

Nook blushed a bit but it wasn’t clear if it was from what Redd was saying or if he was getting so angry the blood was rushing to his cheeks as it looked like Nook somehow found a way to furrow his brows even more, “Red, this is my island, literally MY island. I own this island! I have the final say on who stays here and you are so n-”

“Um...”

Tom was cut off by Jay. Both the yokai looked at the human standing next to them like they both forgot he was even there. Jay reached into his pockets and pulled out a small leaf, as he pressed on it a puff of smoke was released and the leaf showed it’s true form, a small poster. It was the notice Nook had put out announcing this island project. The phrase “ALL APPLICANTS WELCOME!” was typed put along the bottom in bright yellow text. Tom stood in disbelief that not only Jay held onto this but he actually pulled it out here and now.

“A-Are you seriously suggesting I let him stay here?!” Nook was beside himself that Jay was even considering this. He had no clue about Redd and who is he. But Jay also rarely even spoke up about anything.

“See even cousin here wants me to stay!” Redd said victoriously, “Look Nook, I’ll do whatever it takes, I’ll sign paperwork, pay rent for the dockin' of my boat, I actually have the money and I’ll pay you on time for once!” Redd’s posture suddenly grew less confident and he let his hands fall to his side, “Nook, I’m serious. I know you’ve heard this all before from me but, I don’t know what else I can do except show you just how serious I am.”

“What makes you think I should even give you another opportunity! You’ll just create havoc here then run away at the first sign of trouble like usual, that’s all your good at.” The tanuki stared directly into Redd’s eyes.

“I-I know I deserve that,” Redd straightened his arms and closed his fists. He looked away from Tom, he knew what he had to say, a deal not even Tom could refuse, it was just hard to get it out. Redd took a deep breath as he readied himself, “Nook, if you give me this chance and I blow it. I won’t come back, ever. I’ll leave you alone and fuck off to some distant country and stay as far away from you as I can possibly get. You won’t hear from me, ever again.”

Tom looked at the kitsune with a silent scowl. He knew every trick he had, every dashing smile he rehearsed, every glance he would give to leave intrigue. Tom could tell Redd was being serious, that or his game has gotten better after all these years. Either way, seeing that dejected-looking expression on the fox was enough to stir up memories. He looked to Jay, the human just gave him a silent stare and a stern nod. Nook has known Jay for many years; since he first gave him a loan for a house all those years back.

“Jay, I know you like giving people the benefit of the doubt, but you don’t know this guy like I do.” Tom said, trying to talk some sense into his friend.

“You may owe this island Mr. Nook, but you trusted me to be the island rep. As your island rep I am asking you to give Redd here a chance. Regardless of the past you two clearly have, you started all this to give new horizons to people so they can start a new life. I think everyone deserves that shot. That's why I’ve been pouring my soul into making this succeed just like you have been.”

Tom was positive that was the most Jay had spoken in all the time that he’s known him. And he said all that with an expression that just screamed how earnest he was being. Redd just looked shocked at hearing Jay say anything at all.

Tom groaned and turned around, “You get, one chance and that’s only because my island rep is vouching for you.”

Redd looked so happy Jay swore he saw stars in his eyes, “Does that mean?”

Tom sighed, “You can stay on this island provided you do the proper paperwork and pay docking for your boat. But Redd?” Tom looked over at Redd with a scowl, one that made even Redd look a bit hurt, “We are still through, you will be nothing more than another resident on this island. If there is even a HINT that you're up to your old tricks; you’re out of here. Are we clear?”

“Y-Yes.” Redd said, actually sounding dejected.

“Hmph,” Tom began walking away, “Come to the Resident Services building tomorrow around two to sign all of the paperwork. You better not be late!”

Redd watched Tom as he walked away. He felt he was on the right path, he would prove to Nook was a changed man and they can be happy again. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but this? This all hurt. Jay picked up Tom’s clipboard and began following after him, turning around to wave bye to Redd as he did so. Usually, Redd would do something hardy and full of bombastic energy, but all he could muster was a small wave. Once they were out of sight, Redd let himself feel the emotions he was bottling up throughout that entire ordeal. What had to have only been around ten minutes felt like an eternity.

All this time Tom was always in the back of his head. His feelings for Tom, his love for Tom, love wouldn't let him get away. It held him down and forced every bad memory onto him alongside hopeful what-ifs. This wasn’t at all how he imagined seeing Tom again. Tears began to well in his eyes but he just let out a sign and wiped them away.

“C’mon Redd,” he said to himself as he began walking toward his boat, “Pick yourself up, your new life begins tomorrow, hopefully...”

Love Won't Let You Get Away
Chapter 2
Somebody That I Used To Know

It was another bright and hot Summer day but luckily for those in the resident services building, it was a crisp and cool 71°. Normally it would just be Tom and his assistant Isabelle, along with any incoming resident who needed to use the ABD machine or the recycle bin. Today was different, today the Island Representative Jay has been in the office basically all morning. It was only yesterday that he helped convince Tom to allow his old business partner Redd to become a resident on island Avalon. Today the kitsune was supposed to come in at 2 PM, Tom asked for Jay to come in with Redd since they had discussed a special circumstance and he needed to be there for the meeting, but Jay was too nervous and just hung out at the office. He was worried Redd might try to show up early, or worse he might even ditch the meeting altogether.

The room was awkwardly silent all this time. Isabelle and Jay kept to themselves with their own work, occasionally glancing over to their boss out of a mix of concern and curiosity. Tom had been pounding cups of coffee and glaring at the front door, almost daring it to open. Tom couldn’t imagine Redd actually showing up, yesterday's performance was just another one of his shows to worm his way back into his life, take what he wanted, and leave. Tom wasn’t having it this time however, he now had the boys to look after. The tanuki eyed the digital clock on his computer screen, 1:55 PM, five more minutes until he either can finally relax or, Redd did show up and he had a massive headache on his hands. Tom took another sip of what had to be his sixth or seventh cup of coffee so far.

Suddenly the bell on the front door jingled as someone began opening the door. Isabelle and Jay both held their breaths and Tom furrowed his brows. They all let out a sigh of relief when it turned out to just be one of the residents, Chief, coming in to drop off something at the recycling bin. Just as Chief was making his way back outside the front door suddenly shot open again. A lanky, shifty-eyed kitsune was in the door frame, it was Redd. Tom’s brows immediately re-furrowed themselves.

“Honey I’m home!” Redd joked as he strode in, Jay banged his head on the desk as he was at a loss for words upon hearing that, more so than usual anyway. Chief, sensing the immediate tension, quickly scurried out of the office.

“Take this seriously,” Tom said coldly, not giving recognition to the “joke” but clearly voicing his disapproval, “I agreed to give you a chance but you still have to be professional.”

“I am being professional!” Redd rebutted, “See? I’m wearing my nice clothes.” Redd gestured down to his outfit, it was hardly what one would normally consider professional though. It was a simple button-up shirt and some jeans. His shoes were still the dusty slip-ons he normally wore. The shirt itself wasn’t all the way buttoned up either as the first three buttons were left undone. This allowed a small tuft of chest fur to poke through.

Isabelle was already miffed, Tom wasn’t just her boss, she considered him a good friend, and she hated seeing others make her friends mad. She knew she had to be a responsible adult here, but she couldn’t stop herself from saying, “Hmph, I would hardly call that professional.”

“Honestly this is probably the best we will get out of him,” Tom groaned as he rubbed his temples. Tom looked up at the fox in front of him and took in a deep breath in hopes of gaining back his composure. Honestly, he was surprised Redd showed up at all, let alone on time. Still, he wasn’t about to give Redd the benefit of the doubt, he’s done that too many times before, “Alright Redd let’s start. Yes yes.”

Tom and Redd began going over all the paperwork in detail. Tom gave very formal introductions to Jay, Isabelle, and their titles, he went into an in-depth discussion on what life on the island is like and what was expected of him. Surprisingly to Tom, Redd was actively listening and filling out the forms. He signed the no litter agreement, the noise pollution act, he even didn’t have any disagreements on how much monthly docking for his boat was. Jay looked on with wonder, he admitted to himself he didn’t know Redd too well, at least not as well as Tom clearly did, but he was surprised about how Redd was behaving. Isabelle, for her part, just kept up her glare.

Both her and Jay have heard stories about this Kitsune from Tom. While she could tell Jay was hopeful, she was just worried about Tom getting hurt.

“I cannot stress this enough, you cannot sell your forgeries Redd,” Tom said as they began going over the finer details, “Not on this island! Not unless you’re upfront about exactly what they are. If you are to be a resident here you cannot continue to scam people here as I am sure you’ve done in the past.”

“Rodger.” That was all Redd said. Jay and Isabelle both looked at each other, shocked. No jokes, no arguments, just acceptance.

Tom was unconvinced. He leaned in and said, “I mean it Redd. If I hear about even ONE scam or con, I’m throwing you back on that boat and shipping you out to sea myself. Do we understand each other?”

“Perfectly so,” Redd said plain-faced, “Tom, I told you before. I’m serious about this and showing you how much I’ve changed. I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Tom looked at Redd, at that genuine expression he had, he rarely saw it before so he knew he was being serious, still, he wasn’t going to lose the upper hand here, no matter how much that face stirred up emotions in his heart.

“Alright then,” Tom said as he began stacking the papers in front of him, “There is one last condition,” Tom looked Redd dead in the eyes, “You cannot go to Nook’s Cranny. You are banned from it.”

Redd actually looked a bit upset by this, within good reason, “Wait, you’re banning me from the one store on the island? How is that even fair?” The fox was starting to sound upset, “I can’t just live off of the fruit you guys grow on the island! What am I supposed to do for supplies or food I can take with me when I have to sail around?”

Flashes of all the instant noodles Redd liked to call “dinner” ran through Tom’s mind, “I’m not saying you can’t shop, but you can’t go in.”

“Then how am I supposed t-”

“Jay here has agreed to pick up any supplies and things you made need. You will be getting a NookPhone, you are to message or call him with what you want, you will pay him upfront,” Tom added extra emphasis on the upfront part, “And he will pick up what you need.”

“How is that fair to me or even him?” Redd shot back, “At least give me a good reason!”

“No, you don’t get an explanation, you either agree to this or you leave this island. Jay understands my reasoning and has agreed to help. He will be compensated for his time. Though, I doubt you were worrying about that but keep it in mind. He isn’t just doing it for free.” Tom knew this was unfair to both Redd and Jay. But he will not allow Redd to meet Timmy and Tommy, at least not anytime soon.

Redd looked at Jay who just nervously chuckled as he scratched the back of his head. Redd looked to the raccoon in front of him. He remembered how controlling Tom could be sometimes, it was one of the reasons for one of their many breakups. But this? This is a brand new level. Redd seriously considered walking out right then and there. But looking at Tom’s face, how handsome he looked even when angry at him made his kitsune heart flutter. Redd crossed his arms and slouched in his chair, a bit like a child who was told no might do.

“Fine.” Redd agreed bitterly.

Tom raised an eyebrow, he expected more of a battle from Redd, “Fine?”

“Yes, fine,” Redd huffed, “I don’t know what your deal is with this, but I know even you get this is messed up. If you can look at me like that and make this demand, then fine. Something is clearly going on there you don’t want me to see. Despite what I know you think about me, I’m not a moron.”

Tom’s demeanor managed to crack as it appeared he was a bit hurt by that, not that Redd noticed, “I-I never said you were a-”

“I know you well enough that you don’t do things like this without a good reason. So fine. I’ll agree. Are we done here now?”

The room fell deathly silent, there was no sound, it was as if the universe had it’s eyes on this exact moment. As if the next words someone spoke would be broadcast to everyone in the world. Jay looked over at Tom. He expected to see him look relieved or even keep up the cold face he had been putting on for this meeting. But when he looked at Tom, all he saw was the tanuki looking unsure, maybe, even a bit sad.

“Yes, that is the last of it,” Tom said as he broke the silence that had been choking the room, “I’m going to go to my office and finalize everything in the system. Please see Isabelle for your NookPhone.” He got up, and quickly turned around, as if he couldn’t bear to look at Redd anymore, but he didn’t appear to be angry anymore. If anything he looked a bit, guilty. Redd glanced up to see the portly tanuki walk into his office and shut the door behind him with a loud slam.

Jay and Isabelle were at a loss for words. The meeting itself was over but the crushing weight it brought still hung in the air.

Isabelle worked up the nerve to speak, “Here let me get that NookPhone for you,” She said as she opened her desk drawer and pulled a boxed NookPhone out and set it on the counter in front of her, “I’ll make your new resident announcement tomorrow morning, Jay, would you mind showing Redd here around the island?”

Jay gave a smile and a firm nod as he stood up from his chair and lifted the divider that blocked off the work side from the customer side. Redd stood up, grabbed the box and the two exited out of the building together. Jay stretched as the warm sunlight hit his face. He looked over to Redd who was being surprisingly silent.

“He really doesn’t trust me, does he?” Redd asked, Jay had a feeling the question was more to Redd himself than to anyone in particular.

Jay grabbed Redd’s wrist, the fox looked up to find Jay giving him a warm smile and pointing to something in the distance. It was a large classical looking building. Redd guessed it was most likely the island museum.

“Alright alright, yeah,” Redd smirked, “Let's get this tour started. By the way, how do I set this thing up?” Redd asked as he held up the NookPhone box in his other hand.

The two stood in front of the resident services building as Jay guided Redd through setting up his new Nookphone and how to use the different apps. He went into detail about Nookmiles and what they can be used for, the whole thing made Redd roll his eyes. Jay then showed him how to open the map. They used this to walk around the island and start their tour. They popped into the Able Sisters clothing store since that was one their way to the museum. They almost would have kicked Redd out if it wasn’t for Jay explaining what was going on. They weren’t too thrilled but they let it be, although not without letting Redd they would have their eyes on him.

Next, they went off to the museum. Redd was a bit worried about meeting the curator as he was positive they would know about his, dealings. To his relief and somewhat surprise the curator was standing straight up but somehow fast asleep. Jay explained that's just how he is during the day, Redd found that answered none of the questions he had and if anything only raised more. Jay offered a tour of the museum’s different sections but Redd declined, they did stop by the café, The Roost, for a cup of coffee. Jay introduced Redd to the owner, a pigeon named Brewster. It was hard to see the pigeon’s eyes but Redd had never felt a more imposing energy in his life. This man could probably take down crime bosses with a glare if he felt like it.

After that, Jay then began introducing Redd to the other residents, most were already acquainted with the kitsune as he scammed them in the past. Needless to say, they weren’t too happy with the idea of Redd now being a resident. They seemed to actively listen to Jay when he did speak up and tried to dispel their worries, they all clearly trusted him quite a bit. Finally, Jay pointed out Nook’s Cranny, obviously not getting too close.

“Right, shouldn’t be too hard to avoid I guess,” Redd sighed. With that last bit of the tour done, Redd noticed that the sun was begining to set. Redd’s stomach let out a small growl, he figured it had been a while since he actually ate something, “I got like, two-thousand bells on me. Do you mind going in there for me and grabbing like, five bowls of instant ramen? Maybe some chicken breast or fish if they have it?”

Jay nodded and smiled. He quickly took out his phone, most likely to message Tom, and then took the sack of bells. Redd stayed put as he watch the human walk right into the store. After about ten minutes Jay walked out carrying several bags of groceries.

He walked up to Redd and tried handing him his change, “You keep it,” Redd said. He felt bad Jay had to do this at all. Jay swiftly shook his head and forced the sack into Redd’s hand, “A-alright then.”

Jay handed Redd about half the bags, clearly adamant about helping the fox carry his groceries. They made their way over Redd’s boat and Jay handed over the bags he was carrying. The human waved goodbye and began running off. Redd walked up the plank to his boat, unlocked the door, and turned on the light. The dim and dying bulb barely lit up the room as Redd made his way over to the small kitchen. He opened up the fridge and slid the meat inside, it was always such a weird site to him, having things actually in the fridge. He was so used to it being empty most of the time. He then put most of the ramen bowls away, leaving one out for his dinner. He tore off the lid, filled the bowl up with water, poured in the little sauce packet it came with, and popped it in the microwave.

Redd stood there and watched as the bowl turned around and around inside. He began to zone out as thoughts of the day filled his mind. He wondered if this was the right thing anymore. He expected some pushback from Tom but it was becoming more and more clear to Redd that it was like Tom would prefer him dead. Memories once again began playing out. He remembered when they first started dating, when they first moved in together. They were so happy back then. Before he could drift too deeply, the loud beeping of the microwave dragged Redd out of his own mind. Redd grabbed some chopsticks that he believed to be clean off the counter and opened the microwave to get his dinner.

The next morning, Isabelle’s melodic voice rang out over the island PA system, “Good morning everyone! Right now on Avalon it’s 9 o’clock AM on Friday, July 2nd. I have, um, exciting news for you all!” She sounded rather hesitant when she said the word exciting, “Today we have a new resident living here on island Avalon! I’m sure some of you already know him but for the foreseeable future, Redd will be living here! Make sure you give Redd a warm welcome! That’s it for the daily announcements! I hope you all have a good day and remember to stay hydrated! It’s gonna be a hot one out there today!” Isabelle finished with a smile and turned off the intercom.

“How was that Mr. Nook?” Isabelle asked, “Maybe I should have actually warned everyone about Redd?”

Tom didn’t look up from his computer screen, “No, th-that was fine Isabelle, good job as always.” Tom’s voice was distant, Isabelle wasn’t even sure he was actually looking at anything particular on his computer as more more just staring at it.

The next few weeks went by without any sort of issue. Tom hadn’t heard anything about Redd, except from Jay when he went to get groceries for him and kept Tom in the loop. Tom hadn’t even noticed Redd walking around the island. It was usual for Tom to look out his window throughout the day and see the different residents hanging out in the courtyard or going about their day, but he hasn’t seen Redd at all since that initial meeting. If it wasn’t for Jay’s occasional updates, Tom would have assumed Redd ran away again.

Is he even leaving that boat?” Tom thought to himself, “Is he ok cooping himself up like that?” Tom shook his head and steeled himself, “No, I’m not worrying about him. He isn’t my concern. At least, at least not anymore...”

Redd had been staring at his phone for the past hour now as he waited for an update from Jay. Redd was getting ready to sail out to visit other islands, beaches, and even a few cities to sell his wares. Everything else was in place but he needed supplies from Nook’s Cranny, at least enough to get him by till he can go to a store he could actually go into. Jay however wasn’t responding, none of his texts were being answered. In truth Redd was a bit concerned as it was unlike the human to not respond, he took his job very seriously. He figured Jay might just be busy, too busy for a conman like himself. After five more minutes Redd decided he couldn’t wait any longer. If he didn’t leave by sundown he is going to miss his chance and will have to sail out next week. Redd wasn’t sure if he had enough funds to last another week. He had no clue why Tom would ban him from the one store on the island, he tried to work with him to prove he could be trusted, but why should he play fair when Tom clearly wasn’t. He needed supplies and he needed them now.

Redd quickly typed out a message and sent it over to Jay, “Sorry Cousin, but I can’t wait any longer. I need to get this done so I can sail out tonight. I’m heading to Nook’s Cranny. Tell Tom he can chew me out when I get back in a week.”

Redd had no clue why Tom felt it necessary to bar him from the one store on the island, perhaps Tom was worried he might try to sell his art there, or maybe he just didn’t trust him not to steal. Either way, Redd felt it was utter bullshit. Redd grabbed a handful of candy from a bag he had Jay get him from his last shopping trip and put them in his pocket. Redd didn’t care too much for sweets but even he liked them now and then, and right now he needed something to munch on while he walked over to Nook’s Cranny. Redd walked down the planks to his boat and began walking. Luckily for him, the boat was actually rather close to the store. As Redd approached, he felt a small twinge in his chest. He was a bit nervous about finding out what the big deal was. From what he could see of the inside from the windows and the glass door, it was just a normal-looking shop.

As Redd approached the front door he heard rushed footsteps behind him. He turned to find Jay panting as he tried to catch is breath.

“There you are Cousin! I was worried about you! If you want to apologize or something don’t worry about it. I know you're busy running around. I’ll just stop in real fast, grab my supplies, then you can see me off! Just don’t miss me too much while I’m gone haha!”

Before Jay could say anything to stop him, Redd turned around and opened the door. The bell on the door rang out in the seemingly empty store. Before Redd could even question the lack of workers, two small voices spoke at his feet.

“Welcome to Nook’s Cranny!”

“...Welcome!”

Redd looked down at what appeared to be to kid versions of Tom, they looked so much like him they almost seemed like little clones. Redd couldn’t believe what he was seeing; it felt like he was just shot in the gut. No, he’s been shot in the gut before and this feeling was worse. He finally knew why Tom didn’t want him in the store. Jay looked on in worrying horror, he had no idea what to do here. He couldn’t rush Redd out, that would make the twins ask questions. He thought about calling Tom but what would he even say?

As Redd peered downward at the mini Toms in front of him, he smiled and knelt down so he could talk to them in a way that didn’t make them crane their heads up at the tall fox.

“Hi, I’m so sorry I haven’t been in the store yet, I’m the new resident, my name is Redd. What are your names?”

“Oh then welcome! We’re happy to have you here! My name is Timmy!” The first little tanuki said confidently.

“...Tommy.” The second one added.

“My my you two are so professional! You two should be proud!” Redd said, the compliments made the two beam with delight. Redd pulled out two of the sweets he had in his pocket and held them out, “Would you two like some candy?”

Timmy shook his head, “Sorry sir, but we’re not supposed to take candy from strangers, even if they are a resident.”

“...Resident.” Tommy repeated.

Redd smiled and stashed the candy back in his pocket, “Ah, right you are. You two are very smart boys!” Redd stood back up and stretched, “Well I got some shopping to do, hope you boys don’t mind me walking around the store while I do so.”

“Of course not!” Timmy smiled, “Please take your time!”

“...Your time.”

Jay stepped in and began chatting with the boys himself. Jay made sure to always look after them, they were like little cousins to him at this point. He also kept his eyes on Redd, he watched as the kitsune grabbed a small basket, and began walking around the store grabbing what he needed. Jay understood why Tom didn’t want Redd being around Timmy and Tommy, even Jay didn’t know how he would react. But watching how Redd talked to the boys, and was acting like nothing was going on, he was being very mature. Jay felt relieved as his worries eased. When Redd was done shopping he walked right up to the checkout counter and the twins rang him up.

With the causal niceties any stranger would give to employees at a store, Redd smiled, “Thank you for your help today, have a good one!”

Timmy and Tommy both smiled, “Thank you for shopping at Nook’s Cranny!”

“...Thank you!”

With bags in hand, Redd walked by Jay without a word. Jay didn’t want to leave Redd alone so he followed him as he made his way back to the boat. They walked in silence, if Redd didn’t want Jay to follow him, he gave no indication of it. When they got to the small cliff separating the beach from the rest of the island, Redd hopped right down. A jump like that was nothing for a yōkai like himself. Jay, on the other hand, took out his ladder and began climbing down it. As they walked up to his boat, Redd stopped right in front of the planks and looked up at the sky.

“So, Tom has kids now, huh?” Redd said finally breaking the quiet, “They look just like him, got his work ethic too.” Jay stayed silent, “How much do you know about me and Tom? I’m sure you can make an educated guess from that night he agreed to let me stay, but has he talked about me at all?

“...He’s talked a bit about you before. Nothing too in-detail and I never liked to pry, but, I know enough.” Jay admitted.

Redd chuckled, “Of course, I’m sure he would rather forget I ever existed…” Redd grew silent again, a lump formed in his throat, “Y’know Cousin, part of me, deep down, always hoped Tom was thinking about me like I do him… That he never moved on, like I didn’t. But those two are the proof he moved on, the living, breathing proof. He got himself a wife and had some kids. They're both so sweet too, he must be proud.”

Jay felt his own heart hurt hearing this, he wanted to say that Timmy and Tommy were just Tom’s nephews, that Tom never married again, that Jay was starting to think Maybe Tom did think about Redd as much as Redd did about him. But he didn’t know if it was his place, he didn’t know if he had the right to say anything.

“It was selfish of me to think any of that. Of course he would have moved on. He’s always been so handsome and kind, ever since we first met, even now after all this time and tall that weight he put on. And of course all he has to do is talk to you for one evening and just like that, you want nothing more than to be with him forever,” Redd clenched his fists, “It’s what happened with me, and I’m sure it’s what happened with her. People may like to call me a thief, but Tom has been the only one to steal my heart,” Redd grew quiet again, “Some much time has passed, can we even say we truly know each other still?”

Redd walked up the planks to the deck of his ship. He turned and with one hand, he lifted up the mass of wood and rested it on the deck, “Sorry about talking so much there Cousin, you’ll have to forgive me!” Redd was speaking with his normal bravado but Jay could clearly tell he was forcing it, “I’m sure you’ll have to tell Tom what happened, if you don’t his kids will. I would prefer if you were the one who did it. Let Tom know if he wants to chew me out and kick me off the island he can do it when I get back. If I don’t sail out now I won’t be able to sell my stuff! See ya later Cousin!” For a second there, Jay could have sworn he saw tears in the corner of Redd’s eyes. Redd opened the door to the bridge of his ship and walked in. Jay stood there and watched as the ship began to withdraw its anchor from the seafloor and soon started sailing away.

Once the boat was in the distant horizon, Jay took out his phone and hovered his thumb over Tom’s number. Mustering his courage, he pressed call.

“Hello Jay,” Tom’s voice said on the other side of the line, “It’s rare for you to call so late. Whats wrong? Is everything OK?”

“Tom, we need to talk about Redd.”

Rain On Me

Redd looked out the window of his ship’s bridge. He stared at the small little beach on island Avalon that he always anchored his ship off of. The last week away hasn’t been easy for Redd. He hadn’t gotten any messages from Jay regarding what happened and what Tom said. Granted, it wasn’t like he was trying to get in contact with anyone but still, the silence just added to things eating away at him. The biggest thing was the fact that Tom, the man he considered to be the love of his life, found love in someone else, so much so that they had kids together. There was no way those kids weren’t his, they looked almost identical to him. Redd and Tom never talked too much about things like sexuality when they were together. They were in love with each other and that's all that mattered. Redd only ever liked guys, but maybe Tom liked men and women? Or maybe, he mainly liked women and Redd was only a distraction. Maybe he was just a long-term experiment? Redd quickly shook that thought out of his mind. The years they spent together can’t be just chalked up to Tom figuring himself out.

Once Redd had anchored off the shore and set up his planks on the side of the deck, night had fallen. The moon and stars were shining brightly in the night sky. Redd walked down to the beach and found himself looking up at the stars. He only ever really knew the night sky of light-polluted cities. So to see a bright night like this, where every single star and galaxy shined so brightly as if they had just recently been painted there, was a rare treat. Redd was so lost in the sight and his own thoughts that he just sat down on the beach without realizing it. He promised Tom that if he messed up he would leave him alone forever. He wasn’t even sure if he wanted to be around Tom anymore, it was too heartbreaking to be around someone you loved who only loved someone else. Redd and Tom may be considered young by yōkai standards, but even he knew they were too old for things like love triangles. Especially considering that Tom and his mystery wife now had kids. Redd knew he was many things but even he wouldn’t stoop so low as to be a homewrecker.

Redd began to think on just how out of his league Tom was now. Redd always felt Tom was too good for him but the years apart had only made this more apparent. Tom had always been handsome and incredibly smart. Granted he wasn’t a saint, but neither was Redd. Nook Inc. had also become a worldwide brand thanks to Tom’s smarts and savvy business practices, he had to be one of the richest people in the world. Redd knew Tom donated most of that money too, he’d read articles about Tom whenever he saw magazines mention him. He kept every single one in a box on the boat. Redd realized he would have to get rid of all that stuff now, they would just bring up painful memories now. It was finally time for him to move on, or, at the very least move on as best, he could.

Redd didn’t know how long he sat there, taking in the stars and the sounds of the shoreline. It must have been hours, just by himself, alone. Redd had grown accustomed to being alone since he and Tom divorced. Normally he could stand it, but tonight? Among the stars and galaxies? Among the symphony that was the waves gently crashing into the sandy shore. He found himself wishing for Tom to be there with him, sharing the moment.

Redd heard footsteps shuffling in the sand behind him. He figured it must be Jay, he was always the first person to notice when he arrived somehow, “Cousin, if you’ve come to let serve me eviction papers from Tom just leave them on the beach. Put a rock or something on them so they don’t blow away. I just... I just want to enjoy this night sky for a little bit longer.”

The footsteps didn’t stop however, in fact, Redd noticed they sounded much heavier than Jay’s normally did. Redd did his best to hide his surprise when he saw nice-looking dress shoes, designer socks with that dumb leaf logo on them, and khaki shorts standing next to him. Tom stood beside Redd, hands in his pockets looking up into the night sky himself.

There was a moment of quiet between the two. Neither one had the courage to speak up and say the something both knew had to be said.

“It’s uh, nice night huh?” Tom said, chastising himself mentally for saying something so cliché.

“Yeah, it is.” Redd couldn’t believe he said something so simple. To prevent another silence from strangling the conversation Redd decided to rip the bandage right off, “I guess I should say congratulations.”

“Umm, for what?” Tom had no clue what Redd was getting at but he felt it couldn’t be anything good.

“Oh you know, getting married, having kids,” Redd crossed his arms and buried his cheek into them, “They look just like you.”

Cogs began turning in Tom’s head, “Wait, Redd, I think you have the wrong idea. They’re no-”

All at once Redd’s anger and sadness hit him. He shot straight up and looked the tanuki right in the eyes, “Tom I saw your kids, you’ve clearly moved on from me, wifed up, had a couple of kids and you’ve come to kick me off the island. Well that's just fine. Perfect even. I’m not gonna stay here and fight a battle I’ve already lost. And you know what. I know I’ve changed! That's all that matters to me. So go one, kick me off it’s fine, I-”

“Will you stop talking for one damn second Redd!” Tom interrupted, “You’re always so quick to jump the gun without ever thinking!” Tom closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He looked away from the kitsune, “I… I didn’t come to kick you off the island. I came to lift your ban from Nook’s Cranny.”

“What?” Redd looked back at the man in front of him, unable to process what he just said, “But I broke your rule, the one you clearly had in place so I wouldn’t talk to your kids.”

“You’re right, you did, but it was also unfair of me to put such a burden on you and Jay, of course, there would have come a time when he was unable to get back to you right away. After you sailed away, Jay called me and told me what happened,” Tom scratched the side of his head and let out a sigh, “I was worried about you interacting with Timmy and Tommy, I thought you would start telling them about us or try to use them against me or something.”

“You trust me that little?”

“Hey I have good reasons not to trust you,” Tom quickly shot back, staring at Redd with a look that made the fox’s ears and tail shoot straight down, “We both know that. You’re also impulsive and don’t always think things through!… But I can also be controlling. I know that. I had no idea how you would react when you saw them. I just didn’t want anything to happen, I have to protect them, their my kids.”

Tom sighed again as he looked away again, “Jay told me how you talked to them though, acted like they were just like any other kids. They even mentioned you, said you were “a really nice weird guy who tried giving them candy.” So as long as you behave, you can go to the store. But if you even try to sell any art to them, they have Jay on speed dial and he will be there to inspect everything.”

Redd chuckled in an attempt to hide just how much that comment hurt, “Relax Tom. I’m not gonna scam some kids, despite what you may think of me.”

Tom recognized he might have been too harsh again, “You’re right, I’m sorry. As much as I don’t trust you, I know you're not a monster. I should have allowed myself to accept that.”

“It’s gotta be hard to do that when you clearly think I’m the worst person ever, and that I’m better off dead.” Redd said, sitting back down onto the sandy beach.

“I-I don’t think you’re the worst person ever,” Tom admitted, blushing slightly, “but you can’t expect me just, act like things between us didn’t happen the way they did.”

“I never asked you to do that…” Redd huffed as his ears fell, “None of this matters anyway. You’re married and have kids, I’m not going to stay here while you’re busy being a family man.”

“Um, that's something I want to clear up. I’m,” Tom paused, “I’m not married I haven’t been with someone since we… y’know,” Tom grew flustered as he tried to leave part of his feelings bare.

“Really Nookie!” Redd stood straight up. He was practily glowing with excitement, his ears perked straight up and his tail was wagging, “Not sure why a guy like you couldn’t get it again but if that's true then I’m staying!” Redd said, arms out wide trying to hug Tom who once again held him at bay by pressing a clenched fist into the fox’s cheek.

“Ugh, don’t call me that! Just because I haven’t been with anyone since we got divorced doesn’t mean I’m gonna hop back into your arms the first chance I get! I also refuse to believe I am the only reason you’re staying!”

“It’s true though Tom! I won’t leave until I win you back!” Redd admitted while making a kissy face. Tom didn’t know it was from his fist on the fox’s cheek or he was just trying to be “cute” but either way it was annoying.

The tanuki’s cheeks blushed scarlet as he groaned, “You’re still so hopeless!” He glanced away from Redd in hopes he wouldn’t see his blushing face.

Tom felt the pressure ease off his fist and he looked toward Redd to see what happened. The fox wore a serious expression, “Alright, so if you’re not married, why do you have kids that look exactly like you?”

Tom gazed downward, he bore a face so sad Redd didn’t think the tanuki was even capable of it, it pained his own heart, “After we split I stayed in the city. Had no other real choice since you ran off with our money. I was clocking out of that horrible convenience store job, and I just found them. They were out back, by the dumpsters, scavenging for food.”

The horrible image of seeing such two little kids dumpster diving for scraps to eat upset Redd in an all too familiar place in his heart, “Fucking Christ...”

“Yeah. They couldn’t have been more than five. When they saw me they started crying. They were worried I was going to shoo them away. I knew I had to do something, if I didn’t, who would? So I took them in, gave them their first full meal I think they had in a while. I tried to call child protection services but you know what a shithole that city was,” Tom allowed himself a sad chuckle, he hated thinking about that place, that time. But he kept going, for some reason he felt Redd had a right to know, “They basically told me if I couldn’t adopt them they would most likely have been separated in adoption services.”

“Tom...”

“I-I couldn’t bring myself to let that happen. CPS came over, did the inspection and I somehow passed everything. I signed the paperwork and just like that it was official, I had kids. Although they don’t call me their dad, I asked them to call me their uncle.”

Redd didn’t know what he should do. He wanted to hug Tom, put a hand on his shoulder, and comfort him. But he knew that wouldn’t be OK, not right now, “T-Tom I’m so sorry. I can’t believe all that happened so soon after,” Redd trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. You c-could have called me.”

“Redd you left me nothing, I had no clue where you were or if your phone even still worked. Even if we were still in contact, we both know I couldn’t have called you Redd have.” Redd didn’t know how to respond, before he could say anything Tom added, “Everything was so crazy, we would have just fallen into old habits again, I needed people around me I could trust one-hundred percent, for the boys.”

“And we both know that just ain’t me,” Redd awkwardly chuckled, the frown on Tom’s face showed just how much that statement rang true, “What happened after that?”

“Had to get a second job, it was one of the hardest times of my life. There were nights where I didn’t eat so they could, but seeing them smile made it all worth it.”

Redd chuckled and smiled softly at Tom, “I’m glad that part of you hasn’t changed. You’ve always been so protective and caring.”

Tom felt a bit of heat rush to his cheeks, “Yeah, well, I’ll do anything for those boys. They gave me the strength to pull us out of that gutter and find better lives.”

Another moment of stillness overtook the two. Tom didn’t know what to say, and Redd was standing there, realizing just how much happened. Neither one knew what to say so they both just stared at their feet.

“Something else I wanted to bring up to you Redd.”

“Yeah?”

“I want you to stop anchoring your boat here. Bring it over to the dock. That’ll give you easier access to the rest of the island so you can start enjoying your time here. I never see you outside with everyone else”

Redd snickered, “So you admit you look for me,” Tom blushed again and grimaced at the fox, “It's fine I’m used to hiding her from prying eyes. Most docks don’t want her weathered charms alongside the other boats.” Redd said as he sat back down.

“She looks like she hasn’t had a proper anything in years. But I’m serious Redd. Start anchoring her by the docks, but, clean her up while your there.”

Redd rolled his eyes as he laid down on the sand, “Ughhhh so demanding as usual. Fine fine, Mr. Nook. I’ll get her over to the docks and start cleanin’ her up tomorrow.”

“Good, yes yes,” Tom pulled out his phone and took a look at the time, “I have to get back to the boys now. Tuck them into bed and whatnot.”

“Yeah yeah I got you. They seem like the kind of kids who get mad at you for not reading them a bedtime story.” Tom chuckled at the fact Redd didn’t know how right he was.

Tom began making his way to the cliff to hop to the top, before he did though he paused and looked back at Redd. The kitsune was still laying on the beach, looking up at the stars. The glow of moonlight caressed his features making him look handsome. Redd grew concerned after he didn’t hear the large tanuki jump up to the cliff. He looked up and found Tom eyeing him.

“Ahhh, caught you staring Nook!”

“S-Shut up! It’s not what you think!” Tom lied as it was exactly what the kitsune thought it was. There was one more thing Tom wanted to say. He clenched his fists and ready himself, “I-I wouldn’t prefer it if you were dead. I’m glad you're still kicking.” Tom said unable to look at the fox. If he did he would have seen Redd looking back at him with bright red cheeks and starry-eyed wonder. The rotund tanuki quickly jumped up the face of the cliff and Redd heard him walking away once he reached the top. Redd looked back up at the night sky, not wanting to even move. He just wanted to stay in this moment for just a little bit longer.

Notes:

I apologize for the re-write of the section where Tom talks about Timmy and Tommy. For some reason, I thought they were blood relatives but I learned they weren't so I did some revising. I'm actually happy with this version. Less tragic and more hopeful in terms of Tom's story.

Chapter 4: Scrawny

Love Won't Let You Get Away
Chapter 4
Scrawny

Jay was running rather fast as he dashed his way through the island. He still made sure to give his fellow residents a wave and a smile as he passed by them. Jay didn’t want to stop though, he wanted to book it for Redd’s boat since he should have gotten back last night with new merchandise. Jay was really hoping for a new piece of art he could donate or some rare furniture the twins would have had a harder time getting ahold of. When Jay got to the north shore however he saw a distinct lack of Redd’s seedy-looking boat. The island rep immediately began to panic as he thought perhaps Tom really did kick Redd off the island.

He began to frantically look around the north shore in hopes of seeing the smoke that always came from Redd’s boat. Maybe he docked it more off to the side? While he looked and turned this way and that, he managed to spot the smoke but it was much farther in the distance. By the looks of the direction it was coming from, the boat appeared to be over by the pier. Jay groaned, upset with himself for not noticing sooner, and then began making his way southwest to the pier.

The second as Jay reached the boat, he practically fell to the ground from exhaustion. So much running on such a hot Summer day, he really should have paced himself. The dock wasn’t the most comfortable place to catch his breath but he felt it was better than the sand. As Jay laid back and watch the clouds drift by, Redd poked his head over the side of the boat.

“I wondered when you were gonna come by today Cousin!” Redd laughed as he looked down at the human below, “Why are you layin’ down on the dock? Don’t tell me you ran all the way from the north shore!” To which Jay nodded, “And you probably ran all the way from your house to there too!” Redd laughed again, “Haha, Cousin you're a riot! C’mon, get off that gross-looking dock and up here to my slightly less gross ship! I’ll get you some water.” And just like that Redd’s head vanished from sight.

Jay stood back up and made his way up the planks and onto the ship's deck. He quickly took a seat on one of the upside-down milk crates Redd had scattered around for sitting purposes. He began looking around and noticed something off, there were a few buckets and sponges placed around the deck. Resting against a railing was a mop, and it appeared to be wet, as if someone recently used it. He looked down at the deck and noticed it appeared to be less dirty than it normally was. In fact, Jay had never seen the deck of the ship look this clean! Granted, it still needed a lot of work, like a lot. But this was clear progress!

A bottle of water was quickly shoved in front of Jay’s face. One of Redd’s surprisingly sturdy-looking hands held it up.

“There ya go Cousin! Remember to take slow sips!” Redd said rather cheerfully.

Jay took the bottle from Redd and took a nice long and slow sip of the cool water. He then watched as Redd grabbed the mop and began running it to and fro along a finite area of the deck. Jay tilted his head and looked puzzled.

“I can tell by your expression you want to ask what's going on!” Redd said to which Jay gave a firm nod, “You’re too easy to read sometimes Cousin! Although, I guess that’s a good thing, given the fact you don’t like talkin’ too much. Tom said I could stay on the island. He even wants me docking my beautiful boat off the pier.” Jay gave the fox a wide smile as he practically radiated happiness upon hearing the news, “But he wants me to clean her up. Can you believe that? She looked fine before! Because of this cleaning I have to close shop for the day!”

Upon hearing this Jay clearly looked dejected. A thought then crossed his mind and a smile grew on his face. He stood up, trotted over to a bucket of water and a sponge, then got on his knees and began scrubbing.

“What are you doin’, you tryin’ to help?” Redd asked looking over at the human who only gave him a smile and a nod, “...You just want to help me clean so I can open up shop sooner, don’t you?.” To which Jay gave a smile and nod. Albeit, slightly more hesitantly.

Redd wanted to say something but Tom didn’t mention anything about him not being able to get help, just that it had to be clean. Redd decided to keep that tidbit in his back pocket in case Tom tries to say anything about it to him.

Redd smirked, “Tell ya what Cousin, we finish before five and I’ll give you a bigger cousin discount!” Hearing this flipped a switch in Jay’s mind and he started working in overdrive. He began dashing back and forth in straight lines over the deck. It grew cleaner and cleaner with each pass over, “H-Hey Cousin, don’t overdo it.” Redd said but the words didn’t reach Jay’s ears.

An hour or so passed with the two working diligently on the boat. The deck itself was basically spotless now.

“This ship’s lookin’ better than the day I bought her! I knew she was a steal!” Redd hummed, “Maybe there is something to this regular cleanin’ Nookie was also harping on me about!”

As if on queue, the tanuki began walking up the planks to Redd’s ship. They creaked a tad under his weight

“Wow Redd, the deck is practically spotless! I figured it would have been at least a day or two before you finished this much u-” Tom, looked over past Redd and noticed Jay. He stopped mid-scrub and looked back nervously, “Redd, what is Jay doing here cleaning your ship? You better not have scammed your way into making him do all the work for you.”

Redd clasped his hand to his heart and feigned being hurt, “Oh Tom, how your words wound me so.” Tom kept a deadpan glare that would have made a normal man buckle under the pressure. Redd just rolled his eyes, “No I didn’t trick him into helping me. He started helping me because he wanted me to open a shop sooner. Isn’t that right Cousin?”

Jay stood up and nodded in agreement.

“I even offered him a discount on top of his normal cousin discount so it’s not like he isn’t doing this without some kind of compensation. Happy?” Redd asked as he crossed his arms and flicked his tail.

Tom looked Redd up and down for his usual “I’m lying my ass off” tells but found none. He shot Jay a worried glance as if asking him to confirm the story just through a look. Jay gave the raccoon a soft smile and a nod.

“...Alright, as long as you aren’t taking advantage of Jay and he’s OK with it. I do however suggest you two take a break. I don’t know how long you both have been working but you guys look exhausted. “

Redd pulled out his Nookphone and frowned at the time. Hours had flown by and it was well past noon.

“He’s right Cousin,” Redd said looking over his shoulder to Jay, “It’s well past lunchtime, you should grab some grub. All I got here is ramen.”

Jay pulled out his own phone and sighed. He was so driven by that discount he totally got lost in his work. It would have been bad if he didn’t eat at all and got woozy. He waved goodbye to the two yōkai in front of him and ran off to his house to make some food.

Tom looked off the side of the ship and shouted to Jay, “Slow down or else you’ll trip!”

It was just Tom and Redd now. The tanuki felt more than a little apprehensive about the idea. He agreed to give Redd a chance but there was no way he fully trusted the fox, at least not yet. The lack of conversation would be awkward and any forced topics would be just as awkward too. He expected to turn around to find Redd staring at him, snide remark or flirtatious advance at the ready, but to Tom’s surprise, the fox had already gone back to cleaning. The kitsune was running a sponge up and down the outer walls of the bridge trying to scrub the caked-on grime.

Tom had to remind himself not to stare, no matter how odd it was to see Redd work so diligently, “Aren’t you going to eat too?” He asked, trying to say something so they wouldn’t sit in silence like usual.

“Naw, I’ll eat when I’m done. Not hungry anyways.”

“Redd I know I told you to clean this ship, but not at the cost of your health. How long has it been since you ate?”

“Aww Tom, if you keep this up and people might actually believe you care about me!” Redd said sarcastically as he looked over his shoulder to the tanuki while puckering his lips, “I don’t want to lose this momentum. I can go for a while without eatin’ anyways. I have a question now, why are you here?”

“Oh,” Tom was caught off guard a bit by how direct Redd was being. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small notepad and a pencil, “I’m here to do an inspection. If you intend to sell out of your ship I have to make sure it’s safe for the residents.”

Hearing this made Redd roll his eyes again. He always hated that word, “inspection”, it always felt so official. Which meant he hated it even more coming from Tom.

“Really? Now? Like right now? Can’t you wait until after I’m done cleanin’ my girl up?”

Tom shook his head, “I need to do it before you have a chance to hide any possible safety violations.”

Redd wanted to say something in his own defense but he probably would have tried to hide things like the loose screw on the railing, or that leak in the bathroom. Tom really know him, “Fine, but you’re gonna have to wait until I finish this wall. Like I said, momentum.”

It was Tom’s turn to roll his eyes now, “Yes yes that's fine, I have all day.”

“All day huh? Remind me to go slow then. I want to be with you for as long as possible!” Redd said with a wink. Tom just groaned as he grabbed the one actual chair on the deck and sat in it.

After a little bit, Redd was almost done with the first section of the wall. He wiped the sweat off his brow and sighed, “You mind if I take my shirt off? It’s hot as hell out here.”

“Sure, go ahead I don’t care.” Tom could clearly see the bait and he wasn’t biting. There was no way he would fall for such an obvious setup.

If Redd was upset by the lack of a catch on Tom’s part, he didn’t show it. He quickly took off his sweat-drenched shirt and tossed it onto the deck. Without missing a beat he went back to work, at least not before stealing a glance over to Tom who was busy looking into his phone to pass the time.

As soon as he felt enough time had passed, Tom let his eyes wander over to the shirtless fox in front of him. Even though Tom has his issues with him, and they were massive ones, he still admitted to himself that Redd was very attractive.

Right away Tom began comparing the sight before him to the multiple memories he had of seeing the fox shirtless before. The biggest change Tom saw was that Redd was much more skinny now than when they were together. It was easier to see his ribs and hips now. The thought of Redd barely eating or only eating instant ramen came into Tom’s mind. He wanted to say something but he quickly reminded himself he doesn’t have to worry about Redd. They weren’t together and Redd was capable of making his own choices, for better or worse. Now it was only Tom’s job to get involved when it affected the island and its residents, that’s it.

Tom allowed his eyes to drift lower. Redd always had a great rear and that certainly never changed, neither did his habit of wearing tighter fitting pants that left little to the imagination.

I wonder what he really thinks of me after all these years?” Tom thought to himself as he looked down at his paunch. Tom knew he packed on the pounds over the years but he always put it in the back of his head. Work and the twins were always his focus, they had to be. And if he had to eat cheap, less healthy meals at his desk or grab some fast food after work, so be it. Now though, Tom realized he didn’t have that excuse too much anymore, sure he was still busy, but even he knew he had the time to exercise a bit more often, “I really should go on a diet.

Tom had enough of focusing on his own body and just decided to look at his phone till Redd was done. He looked up at Redd to make sure he didn’t notice the glance Tom gave his own stomach. Any person would have been able to notice Tom was comparing their bodies. Tom wasn’t ashamed of his but it was still embarrassing to be caught making such an observation, no matter how private. Redd was busy still scrubbing the walls of the bridge. If he did notice he clearly wasn’t going to say anything.

Tom tried turning his attention back to his phone but found his eyes drifting once more. Seeing Redd work so hard was rare, but seeing him be so focused AND shirtless? It was like a fantasy straight out of younger Tom’s mind. Too bad it didn’t do as much for him now. Too much had happened, too much had gone wrong. With Tom mentally souring the moment for himself he decided enough was enough and to commit to his phone screen until Redd finished. As he tried glancing back down, something managed to catch Tom’s attention. Tom had noticed a scar that was slightly hidden by Redds’ fur, it rested just under the nape of the kitsune’s neck. Tom reexamined Redd’s back and spotted another scar, then another, and another. Tom’s eyes widen as he took in a myriad of scars dotting Redd’s back that he was too distracted to notice before.

Tom stood straight up with such speed and force it knocked the chair off balance and it clattered to the ground.

The sudden noise shocked Redd, who looked over to the Tanuki, “You alright Tom? Is everything o-” Redd stopped once he noticed Tom’s expression. A mix of shock and confusion. He immediately realized his mistake. He felt his heart begin to pound when Tom uttered his next words.

“Redd, w-what are all those scars?”

Redd quickly turned around and pressed himself into the wall he had been working so hard to clean. He froze, he didn’t know what to say, he just wanted to hide the scars and get them out of Tom’s sight. He pushed himself harder into the wall praying to whatever god or gods that were out there to let him meld into the wall.

Redd watched as Tom’s eyes darting back and forth, clearly noticing the other scars on his shoulders and chest now too.

Shit!” Redd thought to himself as he tried to cover his shoulders by grabbing onto them, “Don’t look!

“Redd, talk to me!”

Redd laughed nervously as he glanced away, unable to look Tom in the eyes. He knew one day he would have had to show Tom the scars if they were to be together again, but Redd wanted more time. He cursed himself for getting caught up in the back and forth with Tom earlier, for being so distracted by him that he managed to forget the markings that littered his back.

“Haha, what are you talking about Tommy boy? Scars? What scars? Who has scars? I certainly don’t!” That was all Redd could manage to say, “What the hell kind of excuse was that?!” He thought to himself.

Tom clearly didn’t buy it and stepped forward. Redd steeled himself and managed to look into Tom’s eyes. Tom bore an expression and Redd immediately knew what it was, it was a pity. He felt like the wall behind him was actually managing to swallow him up now. He began feeling trapped by nothing but his scar, his own mind, and Tom’s eyes.

“Who did this to you?!” Tom asked, “Who hurt you?” It just was then that he noticed just how, afraid Redd looked. The kitsune clearly didn’t want to be there at this moment, “S-Sorry…”

Hearing Tom say sorry felt like another stab in whatever this moment was. Redd hunched over, grabbing his shoulders again, was he shaking? It felt like he was shaking but he had no clue. He did in fact just want to run, every fiber of his being was telling him to run away so Tom doesn’t find out. He usually would listen to that instinct, or tell a lie or do some redirection again but he already blew that. He was a hot mess of fear and anxiety, flight or fight. Redd’s legs gave out and he slowly slid down the bridge wall. Redd knew he had to tell the truth, but he was so worried about how Tom would react. As drastic of a jump Redd knew it was, he really didn’t want Tom kicking him off the island.

Redd took a deep, shaky breath in hopes of regaining some semblance of his composure, “I’m sorry too, I-I just didn’t want you seeing ‘em. I got so caught up in having you here I completely forgot about ‘em. You’ve always been good at distracting me Nookie!” He gave a nervous chuckle that clearly didn’t work at lightening the mood like he had hoped, judging by the sullen expression on Tom’s face, “Just please don’t be mad.”

“Redd…”

“A lot has happened over the years Tom, we both know that. You managed to find work legitimately and built from there. I… I couldn’t. I tried so hard to make it on my own like that but no one would hire me. They got a good look at me and closed the door in my face. I had to do what I could after a while. The fastest way to make money I found was stealing what I could and fencing what I could sell. And of course selling my forgeries alongside it all” Upon that admission, Redd buried his face in his arms. Redd often viewed himself as a type of Robin hood like figure, expect he never gave to the poor. He was the poor. But his past of conning and stealing anybody and everybody hurt to think about. Sometimes he found himself thinking maybe he should have just let himself waste away instead of stealing from people who were basically in the same boat as he was, “Sometimes though I stole more than I should have and got caught. Some people were upset I sold them fakes. Most of the time all I had to do was return what I took or give them their money back and they would let me go. But some, some didn’t. Some wanted to teach me a lesson.”

Tom was lost, he had no clue what to say, what he could say. All he found himself able to do was listen to Redd as he told his story. But seeing how upset Redd looked, clearly pained by the memories, a small voice in the back of Tom’s mind said “Do something, stop being a coward.” This is wa sdrove him to finally speak up, “Redd, stop.”

Redd looked up to the Tanuki who was handing him the shirt he tossed aside earlier.

“You don’t have to tell me the rest if you don’t want to, I-I get the picture.”

Redd silently slid his shirt back on as Tom sat down next to him. He tried to glance over to Tom, but couldn’t bring himself to do it.

“Look,” Redd said, “I hate of these scars. They were from a stupid time when I was dumb and made rash decisions. Scammed and stole from people who were just like me. I’ve put that life behind me, tryin’ to anyways. Can you just pretend you didn’t see this? That you don’t know about this? That I’m still the same person I’ve always been?” He asked, trying to convince himself just as much as Tom.

Tom looked down, “Redd clearly this is hard to talk about. I’m not gonna force this out of you. I don’t have the right to pry into your life anymore,” Tom hesitated, but managed to put a hand on Redd’s shoulder, “You said you put that life behind you, I believe you. I know when you lie Redd and I know you weren’t when you said that. I do want to say, as a resident of Avalon, I hope you feel comfortable enough to come to the residential services building or even one of us on the island if you’re ever hurt or in some kind of trouble.”

Redd smiled, if anyone else told him that he would have felt those words came from someplace of obligation. But with Tom, he knew they were genuine. That was enough to provide some sort of comfort.

“Thanks…”

The two just sat there, listening to the waves and the breeze. Tom thought about how different of a path the two managed to walk. Part of him felt guilty but Redd was the one who left, taking the only bells the two of them had at the time, leaving behind the furniture in the apartment and signed divorce papers. He was certain Redd was thinking something similar at the moment.

“I still need to do that inspection,” Tom said, trying to mask his guilt. He knew Redd didn’t want to dwell on the issue but he still felt bad just moving on from all of it.

Redd looked over to Tom then began laughing. Tom may be able to read him like an open book but it worked both ways too, at least some of the time. He asked Tom to treat him like normal and he is, despite how bad it was making him clearly feel moving on from such a topic, treating him like normal.

“What’s so funny?” Tom asked, scratching his cheek a bit, clearly flustered.

“You,” Redd smiled.

Before anything else could be said the sound of someone walking gently up the planks could be heard. The two quickly moved further apart so it didn’t look like they were casually sitting next to one another. Jay soon popped into view, as did the large covered silver platter he was holding,

“Hey ya Cousin! Bout time you got back! What's in that fancy platter? Did you come with something for us to eat too?!” Redd asked excitedly.

Jay smiled his usual quiet affirmation of a smile and sat in front of the two. He gave careful consideration towards the platter and made sure he placed it down delicately. This only built up the anticipation in the other two and they both eyed the platter. Only then realizing that that moment just how hungry they each were.

As Jay lifted the cover, steam had begun billowing out, letting a savory robust smell fill the air. The cover had lifted to reveal what had to be a picture-perfect pizza. Herbs rested along with the thick layer of cheese. Red sauce peaked out near the edge of the thick crust and through small gaps in the cheese.

“So this is what took you so long? It looks amazing. May we?” Tom asked.

Jay simply gestured to the pizza as if saying “go ahead” before grabbing a slice for himself. The cheese pull looked like something out of cartoons. Redd and Tom both grabbed a slice for themselves. Tom was waiting for the pizza to cool down a bit as it was clear hot steam was still coming off the slice. Before anyone could even warn him, Redd bit right into his slice and quickly regretted it. Yelping from the pain of a burnt tongue.

“It’s still hot,” Tom said, stifling his laughter.

“Yeah, I noticed!” Redd said as he stuck his tongue out in hopes that the breeze would help cool it off.

Jay got awfully quiet and still, “It’s almost, Redd hot.”

Tom and Redd looked at Jay in disbelief that he just said a pun. Quite possibly his first ever pun. All three men laughed, not at the pun itself but how stupid it was.

Notes:

It's Redd's turn to talk about his heavy back story. I feel kind of dumb for making such heavy themes and backstories for animal crossing characters. Like it's a cute game where you fish and have fun, what if I gave two of the characters homosexual tension and angst. But I'm having fun and enjoying fleshing out the characters in my own way. I guess it's only natural for wanting a series you grew up with to grow up a bit too. Either way, I'm sorry, gonna try to give these two some fluff.

The song used for this title and inspiration is Scrawny by Wallows.

Love Won't Let You Get Away
Chapter 5
Wanderer's Lullaby

Around a month has passed since Redd became more or less a permanent resident on the island. He was still gone for a week or two every now and then to not only resupply on new goods but to also sell his more illicit stuff on the side. Tom said nothing to Redd about no longer selling his forgeries and remaining stolen goods, just that he couldn’t sell them on the island. A workaround Redd was currently all too eager to use. He was operating more honestly though. He no longer was stealing stuff no matter how easy the marks would have been. He didn’t want to risk any possible retaliation against him being used as an excuse to target the residents of the island, especially Tom and his kids. Because of that, he was also being honest about his forgeries. He was surprised by how many people actually still bought his paintings and sculptures even though they weren’t the real deal. At least his art was worth something, even if he wasn’t.

Redd thought about how back when they were together, Tom always tried to convince him to make his own art and try to open a gallery. The fox chuckled to himself, Tom always tried to point out anything good he saw in him, even if he was totally wrong about it. Redd knew no one would be interested in anything original by him. He was fine with repainting the greats’ works, it’s what pulled in the bells after all. Redd looked up at the night sky and the stars painted across it. He leaned back into a lawn chair he recently bought for himself to make sitting on the deck a bit more relaxing. The smell drifting from his cigarette coated the night air. The only thing that would make this night better would have been some sake. He did have some on the ship but he knew better to drink onboard a ship he was manning. A cigarette and the stars would be his only company tonight.

Redd pulled out his Nook Inc. branded Nookphone to check the GPS. The Nook logo on this thing always maybe Redd’s eyes roll. He tried not to use it too much since he found it to be distracting but even had had to admit the thing was beyond handy. His favorite apps were the real-time weather and GPS ones that came preinstalled. It made navigation a lot easier than using star charts and a compass. It was also nice to not have to have the radio fluctuating between the different local weather station signals that he passed in and out of. Now he could just turn on a station playing music he liked and just relax.

Redd finished his cigarette and got up to stretch. He wanted to call it a night and go to sleep but according to the GPS he would be at Avalon within the hour. The ocean was clear nor was there any storm cloud blocking out the night sky. But Redd knew he was a heavy sleeper and he didn’t want to risk anything happening. He hated the idea of waking up underwater, or worse crashing the boat into the island. Tom would be furious with him if he ever did that. The thought of the tanuki yelling at him did put a smile Redd’s face however. He was always cute when he was mad.

The sun was just starting to rise once Redd finished docking his boat and making sure everything was secure. He was exhausted but he still had things to do. He had to go drop off rent at the resident services building and then set up shop afterward. He still wasn’t exactly popular on the island by any means, but some of the residents other than Jay were coming to his boat more often to buy things. By how heavy his limbs were though, Redd knew today was going to be a long one. As Redd made the trek to the services building he pulled out his phone to check the time. Never had he hated “6:07 AM” more than he did right now. It was as if the numbers were taunting him that he should go to sleep. The old him would have agreed and let all his responsibilities for the day be left for tomorrow. If he really wanted to commit to this new him he was so adamant about, Redd knew he couldn’t do that. Being a responsible person meant that sometimes you didn’t get as much sleep as you wanted, or any at all. Redd gave a tired chuckle to himself, it seemed Tom’s work ethic was finally rubbing off on him after all these years.

Redd’s limbs hung like weights and he was slouching heavily. He wasn’t so much walking as he was more shuffling around. He somehow managed to make his way to the front door of the resident services building without any issues though.

“’Bout damn time,” Redd said quietly to himself. He was hoping seeing Tom would perk him up enough to get through the day without a hitch.

Redd opened the door and the bell on it jingled loudly, he didn’t remember it being that loud before. The cool air-conditioned temperature was a quick shock to his senses but it wasn’t near enough to wake him up fully.

“Welcome to the resident services bu- oh it’s you,” Tom stopped his usual greeting once he saw the kitsune standing in the doorway. He never bothered with the usual niceties he gave other residents, Redd didn’t earn those yet, “Here to pay rent? Yes yes?”

“Aww Tom, you should quit your job and become one of those grocery store greeters!” Redd smirked, he may be tired but one was never too tired to deal out sass. Tom just narrowed his eyes at the comment and decided to leave it be. Even he felt it was too early for this, “Yeah yeah I’m here to pay rent. Wanna knock this outta the way, where’s girly?” Redd said before letting out a loud yawn.

“She isn’t in yet, just leave your rent money with me and I’ll make sure she puts it away properly,” Tom said before taking a sip from his coffee mug.

As Redd began approaching the service desk Tom noticed he was moving oddly. He was walking like he had lost the strength to actually move his legs in a normal fashion. Tom noticed heavy bags under Redd’s bloodshot eyes.

“You look like crap,” Tom said to Redd once he managed to get to the front desk.

“Hey,” Redd paused, clearly trying to think of a witty comeback, “So do you.” That was a lie, even this early in the morning Tom looked handsome.

“That’s… it?” Tom asked raising an eyebrow at the “jab” Redd managed to throw out.

“OK clearly I’m not on the top of my game here today Nook. So go ahead get all your barbs and jabs in while you can.” Redd smiled as he leaned on the counter.

Tom just rolled his eyes, “Why do you look like you haven’t slept at all?”

“That’s because, get ready for this amazing mind-blowing secret,” Redd leaned in a bit closer to the raccoon, “I haven’t slept all night!” he said with an overdone smile and jazz hands.

“Then why are you here?” Tom turned his attention back to his laptop screen, “You know we don’t close until later in the afternoon. Go take a nap or something.”

“Can’t! Still gotta set up shop for the day. I’ll sleep tonight.”

Tom looked up and narrowed his eyes again, “Even you know how stupid that sounds right?”

Redd laughed, “Says the king of all-nighters! You pulled so many of those back in the day, no matter how much I told you to get some sleep. Hell, I bet you built your empire off all-nighters! Oh, how the turn tables.”

Tom knew he didn’t have any ground to stand on with the no sleep thing. Redd was right, he was guilty of pulling one too many all-nighters back in the day, and even now. Still, he wasn’t about to let this go. Normal Redd was a handful but tired Redd was worse. He was a bit quick to snap at people, and his jokes went past playful and just verged on plain insulting. Tom didn’t want a loose cannon like that running a store right now. Even if he wouldn’t admit it openly, he didn’t want to see Redd look so disheveled. He knew he needed to trick the kitsune into just sitting down. Once he did that it was only a matter of waiting him out.

“You know, this is your first rent payment. I assume you still don’t trust banks so you have a big bag of bells with you, correct?”

Redd reached into his pockets and pulled out a sizable bag of bells which he promptly placed on the counter, “Of course!”

Tom figured this but he knew he had to put on a show so he rolled his eyes, “Yes yes, of course. Well I’m going to have to count it then.”

“What? That’s gonna take too long! I know for a fact I have the correct amount. Can’t you just trust me?”

Tom shot Redd a glare, “No. I can’t,”

Tom grabbed the bag of bells and pulled it toward him, “Grab a seat and sit down, this will be a bit.”

“Uuugh fine!” Redd hissed, crossing his arms and pouting as he sat back in the chair closest to him. He slouched too far back into it for it to actually be comfortable.

Time passed as Tom was counting. Every so often he would look up from the coins to Redd to see if he was drifting off yet. He did manage to sit more normal in the cushioned chair but he looked far from asleep.

“Nook can I get some coffee or somethin’? I need somethin’ to keep me awake while you do all this boring countin’.” Redd grumpily said.

“Sorry, coffee is for resident services employees only.”

“Aww c’mon! Just one cup!”

“Nope, rules are rules.”

“Yeah but their rules you made!” Redd leaned back in the chair and huffed, “Well you got any applications?”

Tom let out a chuckle before he managed to catch himself and stop it, “Yes, but I can already tell you aren’t qualified for the job.”

Redd smirked, “Harsh Tom, that's just plain harsh and you know it.”

Tom smiled, he looked down at the coins and realized he was almost done counting. He was so close to getting the bastard asleep though. There was no way he was going to let him go now. He had to play hardball.

“Crap, you distracted me and I lost count.” Tom lied, hoping Redd would be too tired to realize that he never once lost count of Bells.

“Oh c’mon!” Redd whined, “How can you lose count? You never do that!”

“It’s what happens when a certain loud fox refuses to stop talking.”

“Are you saying you find me distracting?” Redd slurred with a toothy grin, "Am I that much of a charmer?"

This actually caught Tom off guard a bit and stumbled to find his verbal footing, “I, no I mean-”

“Ahhhh gotcha Nookie!” The kistune flashed another dumb smile. Tom looked away and felt some heat rush to his cheeks.

“Will you just stop talking so I can count? Just lay back in that chair and be quiet so I can focus.” Tom turned his attention to his laptop and began playing one of the songs he had saved on there. One that he knew Redd would find utterly boring and force him to zone out while it was playing, “I need to listen to something so I can concentrate. If you have any objections I suggest you keep them to yourself.”

A soft jazzy piano and brass section came from Tom’s computer, followed by a deep alluring voice.

“No, noooooo,” Redd did his best to look displeased at Tom but he wasn’t sure how much of a good job he was doing, “Not friggin’ jazz Tom, please anything but that. You know I can’t stand jazz. It’s so lame!”

“Well I like it, it’s relaxing but keeps your attention,” Tom said as he mentally kept track of the coins he was pretending to recount.

Redd snickered, “I know what you’re doing Tommy-boy. You can’t pull one over on me, Crazy Redd.” Redd said as his neck muscles finally gave out forcing him to rest his head against the cushioned headrest, “You’re trying to make me go to sleep.”

“I have no clue what you’re talking about. You’re not my problem anymore, remember?” Tom said trying to be as nonchalant as possible.

“Ha! So you like to say. I know you well enough to know you can’t stop caring about people, even when it's a guy as worthless as me, heh." Redd smiled, "And you have that need to want people to do as you say and listen to you,” Redd quipped, the slurring of his words more prevalent now. The music dancing in his ears was making his eyelids heavier than they already were.

Tom sipped his coffee, “Mmm, so you’ve told me before.”

“Well, you may think you’ve won this round Tom,” Redd said, no longer able to keep his eyes open, “But this isn’t your victory. I’m choosing to go to sleep!,” he chuckled as he began drifting off, no longer able to resist the call of sleep and dreams, “You’re so relentless y’know that? You’re so cute when your... determin…”

Tom looked up, Redd’s eyes were shut, his breathing soft, hell it even looked like he might start drooling any second.

“‘Not my victory’ my ass,” Tom said. The tanuki got up and walked around the service desk to the other side. He stood next to Redd and gave an exasperated sigh, “I wouldn’t have to do this if you just learned to take care of yourself. You never change… but I guess I haven’t changed much either since I’m still doing stuff like this.”

With that, Tom reached down and scooped up Redd in his arms and slung him over his shoulder. Most people would be shocked at such treatment but this wasn’t the first time Tom has had to do this. He knew once Redd fell asleep there was basically no waking him up. He’ll sleep through everything and anything.

Tom was surprised at just how light the fox is. Even with how skinny Redd was a normal person would struggle to lift the tall fox with such ease. Not Tom though, he is a yōkai after all. Being strong came with the territory. Tom thought about how when they were younger, Redd would love to give hugs that lifted him up in the air. Although he thought Redd would have a much harder time doing that now with the weight he gained over the years. Not to mention he’d punch the fox so hard he’d be shot into the atmosphere if ever even tried.

Tom walked past the divider gate and headed to his office in the back where he had a much more comfortable chair and even a blanket for the colder months. He slowly opened the office door so it wouldn’t make any noises. Even with Redd’s heavy sleeping, Tom still wanted to be careful. Once inside he plopped the kitsune down in his extra cushioned chair. He grabbed the blanket he kept in the closet and placed it gently over Redd. Tom rubbed his temples as gazed at the fox sleeping soundly. He knew he would never hear the end of this from Redd. But Tom really didn’t need the line of complaints and headaches a sleep-deprived Redd would bring. And despite everything, Tom knew that as much as he didn’t want to admit it, somewhere deep down he didn’t want to see the fox suffer if he could help it.

Tom noticed that Redd looked somewhat adorable when he’s asleep, just a bit. Something inside Tom said “Go on, kiss him!” but he ignored it. Tom sighed softly as flashes of their many fights and break-ups ran through his mind.

“Tom…” Redd mumbled in his sleep.

With that Tom left the room, not before quietly shutting the door. He walked over to the service counter and took out a piece of paper from one of the drawers. Using a marker Tom wrote on it and then grabbed some tape. He cut off a piece and taped it to one side of the paper. Tom calmly walked over to the front door, opened it up, and taped his makeshift sign to it. He hoped the warning he put on the door would be enough to keep people quiet for the time being.

A FEW HOURS LATER

Tom had continued working through the day, managing Nook Inc. issues and whatnot. Isabelle, who was all caught up on her work, had been spending the day cleaning. She always hated sitting around when she was on the clock. Tom was glad he got an assistant as driven and kind as her. He really should give her another raise sometime soon. Although she wasn’t too pleased to learn Redd was sleeping in the back office and she had to keep quiet for him. Tom knew if it was anyone BUT Redd she would have been all smiles. They’ve developed a sort of, rivalry, Tom guessed was a suitable word. He noticed that sometimes Redd would come in to annoy Isabelle just as much as he would come in to give him a headache. Isabelle didn’t know it but that basically meant you were in Redd’s good graces, for better or worse.

Suddenly the door to the back office flew open. Isabelle almost jumped out of her chair, Tom just slowly turned around as if he knew this was going to happen. Redd stood in the doorway looking like he was completely lost.

“Holy crap where am I? How’d I get here? What time is it?” The fox said panicked.

Tom sighed, “The resident services building, you came here to drop off rent then fell asleep, and it’s” Tom paused to look at his laptop, “10:42 AM.”

“I don’t even remember coming here. Last thing I remember was docking my boat.” Redd put one hand on his hip and scratched the side of his head, “Well it doesn’t matter! Thanks for letting me crash here Nookie!” Redd said with gleeful abandon.

“Don’t make this a habit Redd. You have a bed on that boat of yours. Please actually use it from now on. Also, don’t call me that.” Tom sighed.

Isabelle groaned as she collected her freshly shattered nerves.

“You just woke up! How are you already so energetic?” Isabelle asked as she gave a glare Redd was all too eager to return. He knew she wanted to add “and annoying” at the end there but didn’t because she would have felt too guilty for being so harsh.

“Well it just so happens little miss girly, I’m so energetic because I had an amazin' dream! A big strong guy picked me up and whisked me away into the sunset!” Redd said.

“Maybe that's a sign from your subconscious you want to leave the island!” Isabelle said with fake enthusiasm. Tom smiled a bit. He knew part of her really enjoyed the back and forth. Redd was the only one who managed to get her to say quips like that.

“Nooooook your assistant is being mean to me again!” The kitsune fake cried, “I want to file another complaint!”

“Another complaint?!” The Shih Tzu remarked, “Redd, do you know how many complaints the residents made when they heard you were moving in?”

“Ooh let me have them! I’ll put them on the planks to my boat so people can walk right on them!” Redd smirked as he leaned in closer to Isabelle.

“Enough you two, you giving me a headache,” Tom groaned as the two sheepishly looked to the floor, “Redd go home and rest for the day. People already came by asking where you were and I told them you needed a break. Stop by the Cranny, gets some actual food, and go home, eat, and sleep! And don’t think I’m doing this just because it’s you. I would do this for any resident on the island."

Redd perked up, clearly happy Tom was showing some interest and care about his well-being, despite the protests. Well, at least it seemed like it. Redd figured it could also be that Tom probably just didn’t want him messing up his sleep schedule and causing mischief on the island at night. He decided to believe it was more about Tom being nice.

“So demanding Nook!” Redd said with clear euphoria. Ignoring Isabelle’s protests, he hopped over the service desk and said, “Alright later losers!” before walking out the front door and shutting it behind him.

Isabelle huffed as he straightened out the front desk. She then grew quiet and peered towards Tom with a knowing glance, “You catch that part about his dream? A big strong guy picked him up and whisked him away into the sunset? Y’know, how did Redd get into the back office? I’m sure you didn’t take his rent payment back there…”

Tom nearly spat out the coffee he was drinking, “I-I have no idea what you insinuating here Isabelle.”

Her eyes narrowed, “Don’t you lie to me,”

Redd managed to make his way back to his boat after picking up some food at Nook’s Cranny. The twins were always so pure and wholesome, they were like living serotonin. As Redd was unpacking his groceries, he took out a small frame from one of the bags. He reached into his pockets and pulled out a folded-up piece of paper. After popping the glass out of the frame, Redd gently unfolded the paper and placed it inside. He pressed the glass back in and smiled. Inside the frame appeared to be a hastily scrawled note in Tom’s handwriting.

“PLEASE BE EXTRA QUIET WHEN ENTERING AND WHILE INSIDE THE SERVICES CENTER. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. - TOM NOOK.”

Chapter Text

Hello, thank you to anyone who has been reading this series so far! As stated I have been reworking this series and instead of just editing the chapters I have decided to just repost the new and reworked chapters separately! Link below!

https://archiveofourown.org/works/38569401/chapters/96410418

I am doing it this way because I felt I was too far into this angst-filled cluster to warrant just replacing the chapters. I might even just delete these old ones but I am still on the fence. Either way, I will keep this notice up for a week or two if I do decide to delete and I hope any people following this series will enjoy the re-writes! I personally like them a lot more. I Have finished Chapter one and am finalizing chapters two and three right now. Once I finish rewriting and reorganizing the existing chapters I will then start putting out new chapters.
