Chapter 6: The apocalypse is rotting

Summary:

-Author's note-
Word count: 1,242
Sorry, it's not my usual amount of words. This chapter is not my favourite and the ending is a little bit fast, but it's still a good one. Alternates gonna be here next chapter. :D

I am trying to post all my fic every month from now on. (But warning there may be times I can't post (like exams and if school is a bit too much. Other than that expect monthly updates)) :)

Chapter Text

(Scout’s pov (Zombietale sans))

Life has always been unfair for me, for my brother, and for my kind. I mean look, us, monsters have been stuck in the underground for centuries, and heck, That's not all. We had to collect 7 human souls in order to be free, And it doesn't help that over the years, fewer and fewer humans were falling and taking longer by the second. Once a human falls, it would take another 10 years before another one would. We were doing pretty good with souls at the start, having 3 souls within 20 years, but the other three souls took at least 160 years altogether. The last human that we needed came 20 years after the last, But it was different. The human kid, Frisk started to befriend everyone. Warming everyone's heart, even Asgore.

They were 8 when they fell and stayed with us for 16 years until monsters started realising we were quickly running out of resources in the underground. Asgore announced to the public that we only needed one more human soul in order to be free. Everyone knew what that meant, Frisk knew it too. Undyne didn't like the plan, but it was the only hope they had, without it, everyone would eventually die. Undyne wanted to be the hero that everyone believed in. Frisk didn't mind the monsters taking their soul, they knew this was the only option, but that didn't stop them from warning us, that the surface was a lot worst than the underground and they all can try finding resources somewhere else. (They knew that there was nowhere else to find resources but they really hated the idea of the monsters going top side) (And we really learnt that the hard way) All monsters understood the message that frisk was giving completely wrong (including me), and, I wish, we thought about it more. Cause after they died, everything went oh-so-wrong.

Frisk was papyrus' best friend, they did everything together. It was lovely seeing papyrus happy, but the moment Frisk died... Papyrus' soul cracked. It was the scariest sound I'd ever heard. I can't ever hear that sound again. I won't let it happen again. I'm not letting Papyrus die, no, never. I thought that was going to be the only bad news today, but woah-ho-ho, as soon as we broke the barrier, I knew what Frisk meant. The surface looked horrible.

"Brother, I think I know why human Frisk was so headstrong regarding to leaving the underground."

I looked at my younger brother's distant gaze, he looked so heartbroken, it made me heartbroken. That expression should not be on Papyrus' face.

"WHAT THE FUCK! ARE THOSE DEAD CORPSES COMING OUR WAY!"

"Z-zombies... T-that should b-be i-impossible!"

"Undyne! Help me protect our kind, we have magic, they got nothing over us."

"Yes, Asgore! Stay back, everyone."

"Why are there so many... Z-zombies was it?" (Toriel)

"Y-es."

"Why are there so many zombies coming our way."

"I... I think it's the barrier. Couldn't you guys feel it? There was a huge influx of magic when we broke the barrier and it probably travelled miles... Wait I think the zombies are influenced by the magic." (Sans)

"O-oh, oh no. T-that means... U-Undyne! Asgore! G-get away from t-the zombies! Magic-"

"AHHH, why is my magic not working on them!"

"There... Absorbing o-our magic... Everyone run! Magic doesn't do anything to these dead corpses!"

And that's when all hell broke loose, everyone was running, and Undyne and Asgore were trying to stop the horde as best as they could. Toriel went to help the little ones from running off. It was chaos. No one knew what to do. Some went back to the underground, some tried to leave the mountain (a few succeeded, many didn't) and the royals guards helped with pushing the zombies back.

One look at Papyrus, I knew what I needed to do.

"Paps, we need to go."

"But what about the others? We need to help them."

"It's dangerous paps and we really need to go, I'm sure the others can handle themselves."

Papyrus didn't answer for 2 minutes, I was starting to get worried but he faced me.

"Ok sans. Let's go."

I smiled and took papyrus' hand and teleported out of the scene.

We had escaped the zombies and I felt so relieved. I can see how relieved paps was as well.

"Hey, sans. W-what do we do now?"

"Heh, well we can't go back to the mountain, So the only thing we can do is keep travelling. Our priorities right now are to find shelter, food, how to deal with zombies, protection from the zombies and find what happened with the surface."

"Oh, that is a lot of priorities. Then what are we waiting for let's go. We have a lot to do.

"Yes, we do."

And that's when, Paps and I set off, to start our new future.
---
(10 years since monsters were free from the underground)

Today has been too long for my taste, and heck, it's not even night yet, and I already dealt with 15 zombies that crashed down pieces of the fence that papyrus painstakingly made a few years back. I had to reconstruct and attach the missing pieces of the fence altogether and gosh, that was so tiring. We really need to upgrade the fence, the job I did was mediocre at best, and it will probably last us 2 more days. Welp looks like another thing to add to my and pap's list of things to do. Speaking of Paps, he's been out all day, collecting supplies, doing runs for traders, and getting the parts I need for the machine. This engine, sigh, it's taking me forever to build. It's already been 7 Years since I started this project and it's only 3/4 done. I built this machine to, hopefully, help us to get out of this fucked up world. I really don't want Papyrus to live like this for the rest of his life.

But no worries, I don't have to wait long, a couple of months more and this darn thing will be ready to go. Just thinking about it made my eyes water. We can finally live a normal life again and experience the surface normally. Sniffing, I wiped my tears on my sweater and got up. I've been working on the machine for 7 hours today, I think it's time for a break. Leaving the garage, I went out and started to patrol and see if there were zombies or any intruders around. Papyrus should be coming back in 4hr, gosh, as soon as he comes back, I'm going to sleep, I haven't slept for at least 3 days. Hahaha, I got really busy. Nowadays people and monsters don't really sleep for long, there is like no time for sleep. There are so many things to do, even at night. It's just the norm now.

Heh, I remember there was a time when I would sleep until 1 pm, and I still wouldn't get out of bed. Papyrus would have to drag me out every time. Heh, those were good times. Now you can't be sleeping in, be lazy or be picky because you can end up dead by having these traits. It will be over soon.

Little did I know, I was going to eat my words in an hour or two. (Sorry Scout, you ain't getting that sleep too)
