Work Text:
They’re at a bar celebrating Yuuji’s birthday and Mai wants nothing more than to go home. The bar is crowded and reeks of body odor and alcohol, she grits her teeth because she knows she’s going to wake up with a headache from all the noise. It doesn’t help that they are all cramped into what seems like the tiniest booth to exist in a bar ever, the lights are too low and she’s sweating in the satin dress she decided to dawn tonight. She’s irritated to say the least.
Mai doesn’t celebrate things, much less celebrate other people yet there she is, in a gross bar commemorating Itadori of all people. She hates to admit it, but Mai has grown quite fond of him as well as the rest of the Tokyo students, so when he asked her to come have a couple drinks with the group, she rolled her eyes but marked it in the calendar of her phone anyway.
They’re sat in a booth at the back with a clear view of the rest of the bar, Itadori is sat in-between Fushiguro and Todo both doing an amazing job at keeping him entertained. Miwa, Momo and Nobara are to her right talking about God knows what and Maki is sat to the left of her chatting idly with panda.
With nothing better to do she decides to watch her other half. She leans forward, chin resting in her palm and circles the rim of her glass with her finger as she watches Makis features, she’s calm as usual despite their obnoxious environment, her lips are pulled back in a slight smile as she waves her hand to accentuate whatever it is she’s talking about. She’s wearing a black turtleneck with a leather jacket on top, her dark ivy hair is pulled back, and her signature purple frames adorn her face. It’s so casual, so very Maki.
Mai’s captivated as she traces a strong jaw with her eyes, watches as Maki takes a sip of her drink, she follows the movement down a slender neck that dips into the high collar of her shirt. Despite Makis usually stoic demeanor she’s always been the friendlier one of the two, offering those around her patience even if it was accompanied by a self-assured smirk. It pissed her off but she also loved it, Mai bit her lip at the thought, Maki was charming. It really was no wonder Kugisaki took to her sister right off the bat. Maki had that effect on people, the ability to draw anyone in with her seemingly mysterious aura all while keeping them hooked with her unapologetic spirit and kindness.
She was also gorgeous.
So it absolutely should come as no surprise when she lifts her head and catches a woman from across the bar practically drooling at her sister. She follows the woman’s gaze and it seems that Maki is none the wiser to the strangers ogling, she doesn’t know whether to be thankful or roll her eyes at her twins obliviousness.
It’s rare for either of them to be approached by suitors, both intimidating in their own right but that doesn’t mean people don’t notice them.
She knows it’s silly, to let something like this get under her skin especially because people noticing Maki is virtually inevitable. Maki is beguiling, she’s intriguing and fascinating not to mention she’s built like a fucking Olympic athlete. Hell, Mai would be more concerned if people didn’t notice her. Regardless, that doesn’t stop the frustration that grows in the pit of her stomach the longer the woman stares.
She swallows the remainder of her drink in hopes of quelling her annoyance and slams the empty glass on the table with a little more force than necessary. This garners some attention; Maki raises an amused eyebrow in her direction and Mai wants to slap (or kiss) the smirk that’s on her face.
“You okay?”
Mai rolls her eyes, “I’m fine.”
“Then why do you look like an angry toddler?” Maki chuckles while reaching over to pinch her cheek. Mai growls and swats her hand away, Maki unfazed by her attitude wordlessly wraps her right arm around Mais’ shoulders and pulls her closer so that their bodies are flush against each other. Mai tries to ignore the pleasant feeling that blooms in her chest but releases a content sigh despite herself.
“s’hot in here” Mai mumbles leaning into the embrace, Maki chuckles. Realistically if she were hot the last thing shed want is to be pressed up against Maki’s body in the back of a bar because everyone knows Maki Zenin runs warmer than a normal person should, she’s practically a human furnace but Mai just wants to complain because Maki is sweet enough to humor her. She also just doesn’t want to voice what’s actually bothering her.
Without saying anything else she bends her head back a little so that her face is obscured by Makis neck. She smells good and Mai has to stop herself from poking her tongue out and licking at the pale expanse, instead she lets her lips graze the skin there and revels in the shudder she feels from the body pressed against her. Mai smirks, thoughts of the woman nearly eye fucking her sister pushed to the back of her mind because no matter what, Maki is hers.
Her left palm rests on Makis jean clad thigh and she’s so warm and solid under her hands it helps make her feel grounded, she smiles a bit at the thought but is pulled out of her reverie when she notices Maki looking down at her. They hold eye contact, and it isn’t until several seconds later that she realizes Maki is talking to her.
“I’m going to grab us some drinks.”
Mai watches as Maki sets off to the bar, however the content smile on her face is immediately replaced by a scowl when the woman from earlier intercepts her path. She watches to her utter chagrin as the woman starts chatting up Maki. She feels her face grow hot as she watches the stranger touch her arm and has the audacity to keep it there as if they’ve known each other for years.
Her twin for her part remains polite, keeping her distance but still entertaining conversation, it’s when the woman leans in and whispers something into Makis ear that Mai has to physically refrain herself from stomping over and grabbing Maki by the collar like some sort of dog. She wills herself to calm down but can’t help grinding her teeth when she notices the woman laughing, what the fuck could they possibly be talking about she thinks. She knows she’s being irrational and normally would berate herself for behaving like some sort of neglected housewife, but her bodily reactions betray her sensible mind and she’s overcome with fierce possessiveness and…she hates to admit it…..jealousy.
She glances back up and the look on the woman’s face is enough to make her nauseous. The woman’s eyes are predatory, filled with intent and desire as if she thinks she could actually take Maki home and Mai wants to punch the bitch in the face because hello, she’s right there.
It isn’t until Maki starts making her way back to their table with their drinks that Mai breaks her gaze, making a feeble attempt at composing herself.
Maki slides into the booth with a small smile on her face as she places the drinks on the table, Mai gives her an incredulous look as she watches Maki sip the alcohol casually as though she wasn’t just molested in front of her very eyes.
“What?” Maki asks when she feels her hot gaze on the side of her face, brows furrowed as if she genuinely doesn’t understand what the problem could be.
“Who was that woman?” she asks, and it’s a stupid question because she knows Maki doesn’t know the woman, but she’s irritated and can’t help but be petty. Maki shrugs “I don’t know, she was nice though and even offered to buy me a drink.” She replies with her mouth around a straw, she’s looking at Mai through her eyelashes and over the glasses that sit low on the bridge of her nose.
Mai refrains from scoffing because of fucking course Maki is clueless. For someone so smart she was dumb as hell when it came to people flirting with her. For those who didn’t know her well enough, they could write off Makis response as nonchalance, even indifference but Mai knew her sister, the girl could be as dense as a brick wall.
Mai downs her drink in one go and Maki just stares at her, her eyebrows raised in question.
“She didn’t have to touch you..” she mumbles more to herself than anything, Maki must’ve heard her though because she puts her drink down and looks at her as if she’s grown two heads. Mai ignores her in favor of looking around the table. Itadori and the boys have gotten up and are playing pool or at least attempting to play pool really, he’s just swinging the pool cue around as if it’s some sort of long staff while Megumi shakes his head. Nobara, Momo and Miwa are huddled together at the bar and she swears she can hear Kugisaki giggling from where she’s sitting.
That leaves her and Maki alone in the booth.
She doesn’t know if it’s the alcohol or the image of the woman touching Maki that keeps replaying in her mind but before she knows it, she’s swinging her leg around and adjusting herself to sit on Maki’s lap. Her hands fall onto broad shoulders with her knees bracketing two strong legs, Maki looks up at her with wide eyes but makes no attempt at moving her.
“Mai, what are you doing?” is whispered into the space between them but instead of answering Mai simply lowers her head so that their noses are almost touching, she closes her eyes and feels warmth stretch over her body when two hands land on her hips, there’s uncertainty in those hands she can feel it, but she stays where she is.
She brushes their noses together, foreheads touching while they share another breath. Without opening her eyes she leans in and kisses Maki so slowly it hurts, it feels far too erotic and inappropriate given their location but Mai really doesn’t give a shit. She blames the alcohol.
Mai has never been one for public displays of affection, but she guesses watching another woman touch what belonged to her might’ve set something off in her because she’s sticking her tongue in Maki’s mouth and grabbing the back of her head like nothing else matters.
They break apart about a minute later, foreheads pressed together and panting to reclaim whatever breath was lost. She opens her eyes and to her delight sees Maki’s skin completely flushed, she looks up at her through heavy lidded eyes and she looks so entranced that Mai has to bite her lip to keep from kissing her again.
“Not that I’m complaining but what was that for?” Maki asks breathlessly, her lips are plump, and her cheeks are pink and all Mai can think is that she looks fantastic like this. She tangles her fingers in the hair located at the nape of Maki’s neck and pulls her head back gently so that she’s looking directly into her eyes.
“To remind you who you belong to.”
