Chapter 1: Hilda's Departure
Chapter Text
In the quiet town of Nuvema on the most southeastern part of the Unova region, a celebration was in full force. It was the eighteenth birthday of Hilda and Hilbert, a pair of twins who lived in Nuvema town with their mother. They had spent their entire lives together, laughing, crying, playing, and working with each other and their best friends Cheren and Bianca. And now that they had all turned eighteen, they were finally old enough to choose a pokemon partner of their own and go on a journey through the Unova region.
The four friends had gathered together after the festivities had ended and all but bolted for the Pokemon research lab, where Aurea Juniper, the Unova Region’s expert, on Pokemon worked. They were all ready to meet their partners and set out into the world after many years of waiting. But as they walked into the lab, they noticed the professor angrily staring at her computer.
“Oh you’ve got to be kidding me,” she seethed.
“Is something wrong, Professor Juniper?” Cheren asked, adjusting his glasses.
Aurea sighed in disappointment. “I’m afraid I have some bad news.”
“Does this have to do with our Pokemon?” Bianca asked quietly.
“Yes. It appears that there’s been a miscommunication with the Partner Pokemon Program. I submitted you four’s applications, but somehow only three were authorized. ”
“What?!” Hilda exclaimed. “One of us doesn’t get a partner?!”
“I’m afraid so. Hilbert’s name isn’t mentioned anywhere in the database. He was never approved for the program, and yet somehow I was told you both were approved.”
Hilbert froze. “I-I’m not approved?”
Aurea sighed. “No. I’m sorry, Hilbert. I’ve already called several times today and there’s nothing they can do. The earliest they can find another volunteer is six months.”
Hilbert just stared ahead, processing what she had said. He wasn’t approved for a partner pokemon. They had lost the paperwork, and now he had to wait another six months before he had another chance. All those years of training and preparing to be a trainer were all for nothing. He couldn’t join his sister and best friends on their journey, all because of an error in the processing of the paperwork.
He blinked and wiped the tears from his eyes. “It’s fine.”
“What? Hilbert, I can wait for another six months--”
“Hilda, no. You, Cheren, and Bianca go, okay?” Hilbert sniffed, fighting back the tears in his eyes. “I’ll be fine here with Mom.”
“Are you sure this is a wise decision, Hilbert?” Cheren cautioned.
“Yep.”
“Hilbert--” Hilda began.
“Don’t worry about me, Hilda. Let’s just go meet your partner, okay?”
Hilda stared back at Hilbert, taking his clenched hand. “I’m not going to be able to change your mind, am I?”
“Nope. Now let’s go meet them.”
Without another word, the four friends followed Aurea to another part of the lab, where three Pokemon awaited them. The first was a Snivy surrounded with an aura of superiority, who looked up from her nails when they arrived. The second was a Tepig who was busy pumping iron, but once she realized her future trainer had arrived, she sat up and waved. The third and final one was an Oshawott who bowed respectfully, standing ramrod straight as he waited.
“Why don’t we begin with introductions?” Aurea suggested. The Snivy stopped with her nails and curtsied elegantly.
“Greetings. I am Elizabeth, and I am delighted to meet you all,” she said with a practiced tone before sitting back down. Next, the Tepig wiped the sweat from her brow.
“Heya! I’m Amber! Pleased to meetcha!” she exclaimed excitedly, smiling widely.
“I am Hanzo. It is my honor to meet you,” the Oshawott greeted with a perfect bow.
“Alright! Now we have introductions done, I believe it’s time for you all to choose your partner!” Aurea explained.
Cheren and Bianca looked at each other before nodding. “Hilda, why don’t you go first?”
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Absolutely.”
“Okay…,” she trailed off. She seemed lost in thought, and after a minute of deliberating, she stopped in front of Hanzo and held out her hand.
“I choose you.”
Cheers erupted from the room as everyone congratulated the two, and continued as Cheren and Bianca chose Elizabeth and Amber respectively. Once everyone had calmed down, Bianca had the wonderful idea of having a Pokemon battle, and so everyone went outside.
Bianca challenged Hilda and Hanzo, her energy practically exploding out of her as she sent Amber into the field. “Alright! Let’s battle!”
“You’re on, Bianca!”
Amber and Hanzo stared each other down as they awaited their trainer’s orders. The silence was broken when Hilda gave the first order. “Hanzo, tackle!”
Hanzo lunged at Amber, trying to use his momentum to knock Amber over. Unfortunately for him, Bianca screamed out her order in panic. “Amber! Tackle!”
The two pokemon collided in midair, crashing into the ground hard. Hanzo scrambled to his feet as Amber did the same, and the two clashed together again, digging their heels into the ground.
“Hanzo, use Leer and follow it up with Tackle!”
Hanzo narrowed his eyes and frightened Amber, causing her to lose her balance. He used the opening to push Amber over and slam her into the ground, drawing the shell on his stomach and bringing it to her neck. Amber was dazed, and Hanzo sheathed the shell.
“Nice battle, Bianca!” Hilda congratulated.
“You too!” Bianca smiled, helping Amber to her feet.
“Excellent battle, you two. Now, here’s a Pokedex for everyone. It records the data of pokemon you’ll meet on your journey, and I’m entrusting it to you four to complete it!”
The four young adults agreed, and before they knew it, the time for their journey had come. As well as the time to say goodbye. Hilbert hugged his sister tightly, receiving a hug back. “I’ll miss you.”
“Same. I’ll call often, okay? Try not to get too bored while I’m gone, alright?”
“Sure thing!” Hilbert laughed. “You stay out of trouble!”
“No promises!” Hilda giggled.
“Hey, Hanzo. Take care of my sister, will ya?”
Hanzo nodded, and Hilbert waved goodbye with his mom and Aurea as Hilda, Cheren, and Bianca stepped together onto Route 1, beginning their journey. As they disappeared from sight, Hilbert sniffled.
“I miss her already.”
“It’s okay, sweetie,” his mother soothed, hugging him. “You’ll see her again.”
“I hope so.”
“Hilbert, if I know anything about your sister, it’s that she keeps her promises,” Aurea laughed. “Anyway, I have something to tell you.”
“Yeah?”
“I’ve been needing a new lab assistant for a few weeks now. I figure you’d like the chance to do something for the next six months while you wait, and you’ll learn about all kinds of Pokemon,” she explained. “If you’re interested, that is.”
“I’ll do it.”
“Okay! I’ll see you Monday to begin your training. Take care!”
“See you Monday, Professor!”
“Take care, Aurea!” Hilbert’s mother called. “Well, wasn’t that kind of her?”
“Yeah, it was.” Hilbert agreed.
“We should repay her some time.”
“Yeah…”
The work at the Pokemon Research Lab was a change that Hilbert welcomed with open arms. He started off as Aurea's errand boy, taking packages and delivering them to the Pokemon Center in Accumula Town, where a courier would take them to Striaton City.
It wasn’t much, but it was honest work. After a few months of busy work and menial yet well-paid work, something new happened to break the new monotony of Hilbert’s life. Aurea rushed over to him with the biggest smile he had ever seen on her face, bringing a mixture of excitement and apprehension to his face.
“Hilbert, I know you’re busy moving those boxes three inches to the left like I asked, but I have someone that I’d like you to meet!”
“Uh, okay?”
“Don’t just stand there!” Aurea exclaimed, grabbing Hilbert’s hand and pulling him along with surprising strength. “Let’s not keep her waiting!”
“Her?” Hilbert questioned, noting that they were heading into the Pokemon Partner meeting room. “Professor--”
“Aurea.”
“What?”
“Aurea. It’s my first name,” Aurea replied. “We’ve been working together long enough to drop the formalities.”
“I’ve been here for six months,” he pointed out, stepping into the room.”
“My point exactly. Anywho, I’d like you to meet your new Pokemon partner.”
Hilbert fell silent. “Pokemon… partner?”
“Hi,” a voice called out to him from across the room. His gaze moved to the source of the voice and his eyes widened when he saw a Larvesta waving shyly at him from the other side of the room. Shock and disbelief flooded his mind as realization crashed into him like a runaway Aggron. Fortunately, rationality came back to Hilbert as his brain quickly rebooted.
“H-Hi,” he shyly replied back. “I-I’m Hilbert.”
“Valentine,” the Larvesta replied. “But everyone calls me Val for short.”
An awkward silence descended on the room. Val looked at Hilbert, and Hilbert looked back, not really sure what to say. Thankfully, Aurea decided to step in for the two of them. “Hilbert, Val has been very eager to have a Trainer Partner for years. Unfortunately, she’s been unable to get a partner due to other, more popular candidates.”
“Aurea, please. Spare the boy the trouble of my life’s story,” Val laughed. “I’m just glad I have the chance to have a partner after all this time.”
“Wait. Sorry, you’ve been waiting for how long?” Hilbert asked.
“Well… let’s just say that I’ve been enrolled in this program since my early twenties.”
“You don’t look a day over 20.”
“Well aren’t you a considerate gentleman. Thank you, Hilbert~.”
“Uh--”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Hilbert. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship!”
Hilbert nodded slowly, not sure what was happening. However, his doubts were now eased by the fact that now he had a partner, and he could finally start his journey.
Right after he moved those boxes three inches to the left.

Chapter Text
When Hilbert arrived back home with Val in tow, he was understandably worried about his mother’s reaction to his new Pokemon partner. While he knew that his mother had worked as a nurse in a Pokemon Center before he was born, he didn’t know how she would react to him being an admittedly attractive girl home.
“Thank you,” Val giggled. “Such an honest young man.”
“Wha-- Val, I--”
“It’s quite alright. I appreciate the compliments, especially after so long without a partner,” Val smiled. “You know how to make a woman feel young again.”
Young? Hilbert thought to himself. He looked over to Val again, now noticing that she did look older than what he thought a young woman would look like. Well she still looks amazing, even if she older than she looks.
“Hilbert?” his mother called from the kitchen. “Dinner is almost ready, I just need help setting the table for three people.”
“Okay, Mom,” he replied before suddenly stopping. “Wait, how did you know about Val?”
“We’ll talk over dinner,” she replied, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.
Hilbert quickly set the table, taking a seat with Val as his mother came in with three bowls of steaming spaghetti, complete with garlic bread. She sat down and smiled at the two of them, spreading her arms in an inviting gesture. “Bon appetite!”
“Thanks Mom!”
“Anytime, Hilbert. Once you’re finished, why don’t you introduce me to your elegant lady friend?”
Hilbert nearly choked on his food as a blush flashed across his face. Val watched patiently as he slowly set down his food and cleared his throat, preparing himself. “Uh, well… you see… uh…”
“I’m Valentine, but you can call me Val. Professor Juniper finally got in touch with the Pokemon Partner Program and Hilbert and I were matched.”
“Oh really?” Hilbert’s mother asked with genuine interest. “I knew she was still working on the whole application process, but I had my doubts about when it would happen. So, you’re Hilbert’s first Pokemon partner?”
“That’s right.”
“Oh that’s a relief. It’s been just the two of us living here ever since my daughter Hilda departed on her journey with her best friends. She does call, but I wish that she would call more often and tell us how she’s doing.”
“Mom, Hilda called this morning and told us she was on her way home.”
“I know, sweetie, but I’m your mother! Let me be worried about the two of you. Especially with that battle where she fought the leader of Team Plasma! She could’ve been seriously hurt!”
“Fair enough.”
“Anyway, enough about my children. Val, tell me a bit about yourself. Aurea mentioned earlier today that Hilbert’s partner had been in the program for a while. If you don’t mind me asking, why was that?”
Val paused.
“Well, I’m a Larvesta. Statistically speaking, there are much better options for a trainer’s first partner. Of course, most usually pick a Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott, but occasionally the odd Purrlion, Pidove, or Patrat gets a partner. No one ever picked me as a partner because to them, I’m not worth the investment.”
“What kind of bull--” Hilbert started.
“Langauge, young man.”
“Sorry.”
“Anyway, most applicants decided they’d rather have someone who can grow with them and quickly. I signed up when I was at the bright and chipper age of nineteen. It’s been ten years, and now Hilbert is my partner.”
“I see.”
The silence that followed was extremely awkward. Finally, Hilbert’s mother broke the silence. “Hilbert, I expect you to treat Val with upmost respect. Poor girl’s suffered enough.”
“Mom!”
“And if you two ever do get to that point in your relationship, well… try to use protection. I’m not quite ready to be a grandmother.”
“MOM!”
“I mean it. The centers give out free condoms and birth control.”
“Mom, we literally just met!”
“To be fair, you have been unintentionally smooth talking me,” Val added.
Hilbert went bright red as Val and his mother laughed. “I-I’m going to do the dishes now! Can I take your plates?”
He grabbed them without waiting for an answer and all but bolted into the kitchen, the clatter of dishes failing to cover his embarrassed screams. Once the sound of running water drowned out Hilbert’s cries of anguish, his mother turned back to Val.
“I worry about Hilbert. He puts on a brave face for me, but I know that he really misses his sister and it hurt him so much to see her go. The two of them had been talking about going on a pokemon journey ever since they could talk. I could never separate them, and now that Hilda is out in the world with her friends, well… I can tell that he’s lonely.”
She took a moment to compose herself.
“I know this is a lot to ask of you, considering that the two of you just met, but… please take care of my son.”
Val stared her dead in the eyes with determination.
“I promise. Even if we do end up leaving here, I’ll keep him safe.”
“Thank you.”
Suddenly, the front door flew open, followed by a declaration of triumph.
“I’m back! And I brought the Unova Championship with me!” Hilda shouted at the top of her lungs. She marched into the living room with her team of pokemon in tow, barely fitting into the room. Hilbert came out the kitchen and his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. A Samurott, Whismicott, Chandelure, Gigalith, Galvantula, Mandibuzz, and--
“HILDA?! IS THAT ZEKROM?!”
“Hey bro! I’d like you to meet my team!” Hilda waved, gesturing to the seven pokemon behind her. “You already know Hanzo, but this is Freddy, Charles, Goliath, Lucas, my Billie, and Zekrom, respectively.”
Hilda’s team waved politely. Her mother’s jaw dropped and she stared at the hulking behemoths in her living room. Goliath and Zekrom could barely fit in the room. Both were squatting, and yet their heads were almost brushing the ceiling. Val, Hilbert, and his mother finally tore their eyes away from the legendary dragon blushing like a boy meeting his girlfriend’s parents for the first time .
Finally, the twins’ mother broke the silence. “How many of you are currently in an intimate relationship with my daughter?”
Slowly, every member of Hilda’s team raised their hand. Her mother furrowed her brow. “Alright. I expect you all to treat her with respect. I hope I won’t have to have any further conversations with you all, understand?”
All of them gulped. “And Hilda?”
“Yes, Mom?”
“For Arceus’s sake, why do you have the God of Ideals on a leash?”
“Because he likes it.”
“Save the pet play for the bedroom, young lady. Now, come, eat! Tell us all about your journey!”
“Alright, alright…”
Hilda recounted her tale over another round of celebratory spaghetti, telling her family all about her adventures across Unova. Epic gym battles, clashes with Team Plasma, meeting new members of her team, and finally the final battle between Reshiram and Zekrom, culminating in a battle against the true leader of Team Plasma, Ghetsis.
To say that Val, Hilbert, and his mother were shocked was an understatement.
“You fought the Goddess of Truth with the God of Ideals, defeated the King of Team Plasma, and then the true leader of team plasma all within the span of the same evening?!” Hilbert’s mother said in disbelief.
“Yeah, Mom. And I uh, I hate to say this, but…”
“But what?”
“I’m going to leave after we finish. I want to find N.”
“You WHAT?!”
“Hilda, you just got back!” Hilbert exclaimed.
“I know, but I made a promise with him,” Hilda explained. “I promised I’d help him find his truth.”
“But--” Hilbert stammered, trying to understand. Unfortunately, he knew his sister. “There’s nothing Mom and I can say to convince you to stay longer, is there?”
“Nope. I’ve made up my mind. I just came back to check in before I disappear again,” Hilda admitted. “I don’t know when I’ll be back, so I figured now was better than never.”
Silence fell over the table.
“Well, at least give us the courtesy of a proper goodbye, Hilda.”
“I’m afraid this is it, Ma. I’m getting up before sunrise.”
“I see. Come here.”
Hilda obeyed, and she crushed in a hug by her mother and brother, tears streaming down their faces.
“Goodbye, Mom. Goodbye, Hilbert.”
“Goodbye, Hilda. Make sure to actually call this time.”
“I will, Mom,” Hilda said, finally noticing Val. “Sorry for not introducing myself, but can you please take care of Hilbert?”
“It will be my pleasure,” Val assured her.
“Alright. Well, it’s been nice seeing you all again, but I best be going now. Bye!”
“Bye, Hilda!” Hilbert and his mother called as Hilda stepped out of the door, her team following her out.
“I hope we hear from her soon,” the twins’ mother sobbed, leaning against Hilbert for support.
“Me too Mom. Me too.”
Two Years Later
Hilbert sat alone on the roof of his house, watching the sun set over the horizon. He sighed, and laughed to himself somberly.
Two years.
Two years had passed since Hilda had left to find her friend N.
It felt like she had left yesterday, but Hilbert knew that it had been longer than that. At first, Hilda had called at least twice a week, talking with her family about her progress in search, which had so far been fruitless. Eventually, those calls had dropped to once a week, then stopped altogether.
That had been fourteen months ago. A lot had happened between that time. Cheren had gotten a job as a Gym Leader when Lenora, the leader of the Nacrene City Gym had retired, and he had moved halfway across the country to a new city called Aspertia City. Bianca had become Professor Juniper’s second assistant, and had also moved in with Cheren, leaving Hilbert alone with his mother and Val.
“Where are you, Hilda?” Hilbert wondered aloud. “I miss you. Mom misses you. Heck, even Val misses you, and she only knew you for two hours. I know you’re out there looking for your friend N, but please, come back when you can, alright?”
He knew he wouldn’t get an answer from the setting sun, but he hoped that somehow, somewhere, Hilda had heard him.
“Y’know, moping about like this isn’t what Hilda would want you to do, right?” Val asked, sitting down next to Hilbert.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. Hilda wouldn’t want to be sad, but I just can’t help but worry about her, y’know? What if something happens to her and we never hear from her again?”
“We both know that she can take care of herself, Hilbert. Besides, she’s got Zekrom on a leash. I doubt anyone would pick a fight with her when her boyfriend is a literal god.”
“Fair enough,” Hilbert laughed.
Both of them laughed as the sun finally dipped into the horizon, setting the sky ablaze with orange light. Hilbert smiled and sighed, feeling much better now.
“Thank you.”
“Anytime, Hilbert. I’m your partner, after all. We look after each other.”
Hilbert’s phone rang, and he looked at to see that Aurea was calling. “Huh. I wonder why the Professor is calling so late,” he remarked, missing the knowing look on Val’s face.
“Hello?”
“Hey Hilbert! Listen, I know it’s late, but I have some research on Human-Pokemon Relationship effects on Evolution that I need both your’s and Val’s assistance. Can you come to the lab please?”
“Uh, sure. Right now?”
“Yes, right now. It’s urgent.”
“Okay, uh, Val and I will be there in five minutes.”
“See you then! Bye!”
Aurea hung up, leaving Hilbert a bit confused and Val looking smug.
“That was weird. I wonder what kind of research the Professor needs our help with this late.”
“Well, I imagine it’ll be physically taxing. We shouldn’t keep her waiting, Hilbert.”
The two quickly made their why off of the roof into Hilbert’s room, then out of the house and into the lab, which was surprisingly quiet. Hilbert was extremely confused now, and he began to search for Aurea.
“Professor? Where are you?”
“I’m in the back room!” came Aurea’s reply. Hilbert followed her voice into a back examination room and found Aurea in her lab coat. However, it was buttoned up, which struck Hilbert as odd. Normally, Aurea liked to wear it open.
“There you two are,” Aurea cooed, motioning for Val to close the door as they entered. “Hilbert, please have a seat on the table. There’s a few things we need to go over before we begin.”
“Okay…” Hilbert relinquished, taking a seat on the examination table. “Professor--”
“Please, Hilbert. Aurea.”
“Sorry. Aurea, what’s this all about?”
“Well, I think I’ll let Val start.”
“Val?” Hilbert asked. “What does Val have to do with this-- umh!”
Val silenced him with a kiss, drowning his questions out with her tongue. She easily took charge and dominated the kiss, pulling back as her their breath ran hot across each other’s faces.
“Val…? Do you…”
“I’ve loved you since the day you took me as your partner, you dense boy.” Val laughed, already throwing off her shirt. “How could I not love you for taking me in without question when so many others wouldn’t give me a second glance?”
“Val, I--”
“Just be quiet and let me love you, silly bottom.”
Val gently pushed Hilbert onto the exam table, tossing her pants and panties aside. Next, she got to work on Hilbert’s clothes, quickly ridding him of his clothing. Now in the nude, Val ran her hands around Hilbert’s body, caressing his muscles, which weren’t anything to write home about but were still defined by the two years of physical labor he had done for Aurea.
At the head of the table, Aurea unbuttoned her lab coat and revealed that she was wearing nothing underneath it. She seized Hilbert’s lips in her own, frying the poor boy’s brain further as Val began to stroke his throbbing cock.
“Oh, did I do this?” Val teased, lining her glistening slit with the head of his penis. “I didn’t realize you could use Harden~.”
“I-It’s hard not to when a beautiful woman wants to make l-love to me.”
“I love you, Hilbert,” Val cooed.
“I love you too, Val…”
Val leaned down to kiss Hilbert, dropping her hips down and spearing herself onto his cock. Blood dripped down onto it, and suddenly, her entire body glowed in bright white light. Her body morphed and changed, shifting into a bigger, greater shape. Six wings sprouted from her back, and a ring of fluff surrounded her neck. The light faded, and Hilbert found himself underneath a newly evolved Volcarona.
She opened her eyes and the piercing blue met Hilbert’s, and his breath was stolen away.
“You’re breathtaking.”
“No, you’re breathtaking,” Val countered.
“You might want to save your breath, Hilbert,” Aurea laughed, helping Val sit up. “I’m about to sit on your face.”
Aurea pulled herself onto the table and planted her dripping pussy on his face, grinding on. “Hilbert, take your tongue, and lick between the folds-- ah! Ohh, just like that-- YES!”
Val lunged forward and kissed Aurea, both women moaning into each other’s mouth as Hilbert licked and thrust. Pleasure built up in their cores as Hilbert’s very enthusiastic thrusts began to rush them towards their climaxes. The energy of her evolution had left Val feeling extremely sensitive, and her pussy grew warmer and warmer still.
Hilbert couldn’t handle the heat and came deep within Val, triggering her own orgasm. In his spasms, Hilbert latched onto Aurea’s clit and sucked, causing her to scream in delight as her legs clamped down on his head.
Eventually, the orgasms faded, and Aurea sighed. “Hilbert, get up, I’m laying the table now and you are going to plow my mound.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Good boy~.”
Aurea laid on the table, and Hilbert inserted himself into her, thrusting away happily as Val took a seat on Aurea’s face, moaning with delight.
“Oh Arceus! Aurea, where did you learn do thaaaaaaaaaaaat?!”
“College,” came her muffled reply.
They fucked like horny lopunny for a solid ten minutes before Hilbert fetl his balls tighten again. He gripped Aurea’s hips tightly, to which she wrapped her legs around his hips and refused to let go. Hilbert came with a grunt and pumped the professor with his pearly spunk as she hit her climax and sent Val over the edge as well.
The three of them were exhausted, so Aurea pulled out a large futon. Hilbert was sandwiched between their breasts, sleeping peacefully as his new girlfriends held him tight.
Back at his home, Hilbert’s mother sneezed, the sudden thought of grandbabies entering her mind. She shrugged and rolled over, quietly dozing off to sleep.

Well. I think there's a criminally low amount of good Juniper smut, so I have added to it. (I hope.) See you all next time!

Hilbert awoke to the ever-irritating noise of his phone alarm, grumbling fiercely. He wormed his way out of Val’s multiarmed grasp to find the damn thing and shut it off before turning around and snuggling back into his moth mommy’s grasp, sighing contently as her breasts pushed up against his back.
His eyes shot open as he realized where he was and what he had done the previous night, and the movement of Val’s hands on his midsection towards his crotch.
“I fucked my partner,” he whispered in disbelief. “I had sex with my partner and the professor.”
“And you were a good boy~,” Val chittered in delight.
Hilbert blushed, turning the same shade or red as Val’s wings. He gasped as two of her hands wrapped around his rapidly hardening member, the other pair caressing his body as she began to stroke. He let out a soft whine, leaning back into the soft fluff of Val’s body, becoming putty in her hands.
Unfortunately, their personal time was cut short by Aurea clearing her throat. Hilbert yelped and sat up suddenly with Val joining him soon after. Both were red in the face and blushing as Aurea chuckled and took a sip from her morning coffee.
“Morning, sleepyheads. I hate to ruin your morning fun, but it’s about time y’all got up. Hilbert, your mother called asking when you were coming home. Apparently you’ve missed several calls from her as well as texts.”
Hilbert paled.
“Oh, and she said to hurry back. She’s making chocolate chip waffles.”
That did it. If there was one thing that Hilbert would never miss, it was his mother’s chocolate chip waffles. She made the best waffles he had ever tasted in his life. They were always light and fluffy, a golden brown tasty treat that always went well with maple syrup. He sprang out of the futon and scrambled over to his clothes, hastily pulling them on as Val grumbled.
Damn you, promises of waffles made with unconditional love!
Less than ten minutes later, Hilbert was gorging himself on waffles with not a care in the world. A look of pure bliss and content spread across his face with every bite, and Val watched with a mix of disgust and fascination.
“Hilbert, please. Slow down before you choke!” His mother scolded. “This isn’t the wilderness!”
“Sorry,” Hilbert sheepishly apologized before going back to his waffles in a more dignified manner.
“How do you do it, Hilbert?” Aurea asked. “I could barely finish two of these waffles, let alone eight!”
She laughed, and the room seemed to brighten for a few moments before an awkward silence set in. Aurea’s phone rang, and she excused herself to take it. Hilbert’s mother sighed and looked across the table, looking between her son and his partner.
“So,” she began, “I trust that if there's any little ones running around in nine months, you’ll let me know?”
Hilbert choked on his mouthful of waffle, with Val immediately clapping him on the back to dislodge the lethal delicacy. He looked to his mother with a wide eyed look of shock. “MOM!”
“Yes?” She asked with an amused smile on her face.
“How did you know that I- that we--”
“You went to the residence of a woman late at night and did not return until this morning. I’d say it’s fairly obvious, along with the fact that Aurea and Val here seem more interested in you than my waffles. Frankly I’m unsure if I should be impressed or insulted.”
Both Val and Hilbert stared slack-jawed at his mother as she smugly took a sip of her coffee. She looked so proud of herself, like a Liepard who had purposely knocked something off a high shelf just to piss their partner off.
“MOM!” Hilbert screeched finally, his face now redder than a tomato.
“It’s not my fault you forgot to wear a condom, young man.”
Val shivered, rubbing her belly as she looked down hopefully. The thought of having little Larvestas running around brought her much joy. She fluttered her wings in excitement, unconsciously glowing bright like a miniature sun.
Hilbert squinted against the bright light, still horribly embarrassed. His red face only deepened in color when Aurea returned with a mischievous look on her face.
"Oh? Is someone getting a lecture for raw dogging two mature women last night?"
Hilbert’s mother furrowed her eyebrows. "Aurea, while your statement is correct, please refrain from using that vocabulary in my presence."
"But it's so fun teasing Hilbert!"
"True, but there are other ways to do it. That being said, if I am to be a grandmother within the next year, I expect you to be there for your partners, Hilbert. Understand?"
"Y-Yes, Mom."
"Excellent. Now run along, dear. Spend some quality time with my future daughter-in-law."
"O-Okay."
"Care to join me for a walk along Route 1, Hilbert?" Val asked, a sultry look on her face.
Hilbert blushed again and nodded. "Absolutely, Val."
He gathered his things and gave his mom a quick hug. Then he joined Val at the door and stepped outside into the cool midmorning air. It was a beautiful day for a walk. The sun was shining, flowers were blooming, birds were singing, and somewhere genocidal kids were burning in Hell.
"Come along, Hilbert~," Val purred, taking Hilbert’s hand in her own as she led him to the open road, sputtering all the way.
"Yes, dear," Hilbert obeyed, still blushing.
Route 1 was only about 50 feet long. Despite its short length, many couples came here from Nuvema and Accumula. Route 1's beach consistently made it onto the top 10 romantic locations in Unova, and with the Sun beaming overhead, both Hilbert and Val could see why.
They walked hand and hand along the shore, enjoying each other's company as the sunshine glistened off the waves. Hilbert leaned against Val, enjoying her warmth.
"You know," he began, "two years ago if someone had told me I would be in a relationship with the region's Pokemon Professor and a gorgeous sun moth goddess, I wouldn't have believed them."
Val laughed. "It does sound pretty Farfetch'd, doesn't it?"
"Yeah. But I wouldn't give it up for anything."
"Aww. You're a hopeless romantic, you know what?"
"Yep."
Val giggled. "Alright then. Come here to Mommy~."
She extended her arms for a four-armed hug. Hilbert leaned into, allowing himself to be enveloped by his lover's tender embrace. As they stood there enjoying the company of the other, a sudden snicker broke the silence.
"Heh. Get a load of these two Luvdiscs, Bravo!"
"Too engrossed in their canoodling to notice us, Alpha! Get 'em!"
"Wha--"
Before either of them could react, a fine powder was sprayed over them. A wave of lethargy fell over the duo, with both falling unconscious in a matter of seconds. The last thing Hilbert saw before sleep took him was Val’s frightened expression gazing at him, followed by her body going limp as she too fell asleep.
Hilbert awoke with a groan, clutching his head. He sat up and surveyed the situation, finding himself in what appeared to be a holding cell. That wasn’t good. His anxiety only grew when he realized that his bag and phone were missing, along with Val.
“Hey, you. You’re finally awake.”
“Wha?” Hilbert replied. He turned to see a lone Wishiwashi leaning against the cell wall. Like most members of her species, she was short and appeared to be weak, but Hilbert knew better than to mess with her.
“Walked right into that Plasma ambush, same as me and that Gardevoir they took to the labs.”
“Wait, Plasma? I thought Team Plasma disbanded!”
"These guys apparently didn't get the message," the Wishiwashi sighed. "Name's Lanta."
"I'm Hilbert. You happen to see a Volcarona come in with me?"
"Can't say I have. A pair of grunts dragged you in here by yourself. They did mention something about the scientists paying them extra for their 'big catch.' I suppose that's the Volcarona you're looking for?"
Hilbert grimaced. "Probably. Do you know how to get out of here?"
Lanta shook her head. "I've been in this cell for maybe a month. If my school members were here we'd be out in a heartbeat."
“Your schoolmates?”
“Yep. Damn proud of them. There are five of us; starting with me, Lanta, Pacifica, Artoria, Inara, and finally, Susie. I hope they’re alright.”
“Damnit!” Hilbert kicked the wall out of frustration.
"Easy, buddy." Lanta reasoned. "Now that you're here, I might just have an idea."
Hilbert looked down at her, eyebrow raised. "Do tell."
"You ever heard of 'Get Help?'"
"Why do we always get the boring job of watching the prisoners, Charlie?"
"Hey, I'm not the one who spilled coffee over Dudley's notes, Delta."
"True, but you were the one who didn't put his coffee in the usual place!"
"How was I supposed to know where to put the coffee?! I've only been here for a week!"
"You could've asked!"
“It’s coffee! Normally all you need to know is which desk to put the coffee on!”
Charlie opened his mouth to respond, paused, and wisely decided not to waste any more time arguing. "Fair enough."
They went back to standing in front of the cellblock, staying nothing and staring at the wall ahead.
"What do you think Dudley was working on anyway?"
"I dunno. Something about reviving that project the former king vetoed."
"Really? He must be overjoyed."
"Judging by how pissed he was about the notes, yeah. I wonder why the former cut that project anyway?"
"I don't know. Honestly, I'm more interested in that rock Yankee and Zulu secured from the ruins of N's castle."
"Yeah, what's up with that?"
"Probably above our paygrade."
"True."
"You see that Volcarona Alpha and Bravo managed to snag?"
"Yeah. Heard she's going to lab to help with whatever Dudley's up to."
"Oh boy."
"Yep. Glad it wasn't me though--"
"Help!" Lanta's voice called from the cell block. Both Charlie and Delta turned around. "This man is dying! Please, get help!"
Charlie looked up at Delta. "Should we call somebody?"
"We're just guards. It's not our job to treat prisoners. Not to mention Whiskey and X-Ray are still out on a mission."
"Yeah, but--"
"Please, somebody! He needs help!"
"Delta, the boss will have our hides if this guy has useful info and he dies."
Delta rolled her eyes. "Fine. But if we get in trouble for leaving our post I'm blaming you."
The two grunts headed into the cell block and saw Lanta cradling Hilbert in her arms with a frantic look on her face. "Please help!"
"What's the problem?"
"I don't know! I need help!"
"Alright, jeez!" Delta fumed, pulling out her keyboard and unlocking the cell door. The second that it took her and Charlie to step into the cell was all Lanta needed.
"Gotcha."
"Wha--"
Lanta hurled Hilbert at the two grunts. He crashed into Charlie and Delta with a mighty thud, sending them crashing to the floor and knocking them out. Lanta let out a loud cackle of delight as she did a victory dance.
"IN YOUR FACE!"
"Owww…"
Lanta paled. "You good, Hilbert?"
“I’ll live,” he groaned, standing up and brushing himself off. He looked over at the unconscious forms of Charlie and Delta and scoffed. “I’m surprised that actually worked."
“Honestly? I am too.”
“What?!”
“Don't worry about it. Let's go find your lady friend!”
Lanta rushed out of the cell, leaving Hilbert to scrabble for Delta's keycard and dart after her.
“Do you have any idea where you're going?!”
“Nope!”
“Then why am I following you?!”
“A very good question, and one that only you can answer!”
Hilbert sighed. He ran after Lanta as they navigated the surprisingly empty corridors, eventually coming across another door. Hilbert used the keycard and opened the door, revealing what appeared to be a storage room. Lanta disappeared inside for a moment, then reappeared with a bag.
“Is this your stuff?”
“Yeah,” Hilbert replied, taking it. He opened it and found that all his supplies were still safely secured inside, including his phone. “Thanks.”
“No problem. Always good to help others right?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“HEY! YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO BE HERE!”
Hilbert and Lanta whipped around to see Alpha and Bravo rushing towards them, Patrat and Swoobat in two.
“Oh crumps.”
“Hilbert, run!”
The two took off running down the hall as the two grunts chased after them. They turned the corner, and immediately jumped into the first room they saw, crashing into a scientist who was taking a sip of his coffee. The resulting impact sent the drink spilling all over his notes.
“NOOO! MY NOTES!”
“Lanta, can you seal the door?”
“On it!”
Lanta blasted an Ice Beam from her mouth, freezing the door solid. Once they knew that they were safe for now, the duo turned around to see their refuge.
“Oh, my Arceus.” Hilbert gasped, slackjawed.
“What-- holy shit.”
They were in a high-tech lab. Machines whirred and hummed, while the fluorescent lights overhead bathed everything with sterile white light. Before the human and Wishiwashi were a line of three suspension pods, all but one hiding their contents from sight.
The one pod that had its shielding lowered held Val. She appeared to be unconscious, but alive. Several wires and electrodes were connected to her, pulsing with energy. Hilbert beat on the glass of the pod, stirring Val from her slumber. She gazed at him in a daze, not sure where she was.
“Val!” Hilbert screamed, banging his fists on the glass. “Hang on, I’ll get you out of there!”
“You will do no such thing!”
Hilbert turned around, seeing the scientist straightening his glasses. He cleared his throat and glared at Hilbert with contempt and anger. “I will not have my life’s work taken from me again!”
“Life’s work?! What the hell are you doing to them?!”
The scientist laughed. “That Volcarona is providing power, and the Gardevoir is awakening the consciousness of my magnum opus, Team Plasma’s ultimate weapon! Behold!”
He pressed a button, lowering the shielding of the other two suspension pods. The second pod held a Gardevoir, but Hilbert’s eyes widened as he realized that rather than green, this Gardevoir was blue. The Shiny Pokemon’s eyes fluttered open, gazing into the room ahead. Like Val, several electrodes and wires were connected to her, leading to the third pod in the center of the room.
“This is my finest work!” the scientist cackled. “Cower in fear at the creation of I, Dudley! The ultimate weapon of Team Plasma, Genesect!”
Hilbert stared at the still form of Genesect, gulping at the sharp claws and large cannon on its back. Luckily, it didn’t seem to be active at the moment. He looked back over at Dudley, who was frowning and pressing buttons on the console.
“Sorry, that was meant to be more dramatic. It appears that Genesect hasn’t fully powered up yet--”
“You get Val and that Gardevoir out of the pods now!” Hilbert ordered.
Dudley scoffed. “And why would I do that? In case you haven’t noticed, you’ve locked yourself in here, and my associates are currently working on getting the door open.”
The sound of repeated impacts on the other side of the lab door further emphasized the scientist’s point. Despite that, Hilbert marched forward and raised his fist.
“Ah ah ah! If you hurt me, you’ll never be able to get your friends out of the pods!”
Hilbert grit his teeth, wanting nothing more to beat the ever-loving crap out of the shit-talking scientist in front of him. Reluctantly, he lowered his hands, glaring daggers at Dudley.
“That’s what I thought. Now go wait in the corner while I continue my work-- urgh!”
Dudley doubled over in pain, falling to the ground as he nursed his genitals. Lanta glared at him, fist still clenched in anger.
“I hate people who run their mouths forever.”
“Agreed,” Hilbert nodded. “But how are we supposed to save Val and the Gardevoir now?!”
I am called Azura.
Hilbert and Lanta both went wide-eyed and looked over to the pod containing the Shiny Gardevoir. “You’re awake?!”
Yes. I have been awake since you came into the room.
“Then why didn’t you help us sooner?!”
I would’ve gladly. Unfortunately, the shielding on the pod prevents me from broadcasting my telepathy. Thanks to Dudley lowering the shields, I can speak freely.
“Oh.”
You must hurry. The grunts are currently crafting a makeshift flamethrower.
“How are we supposed to get you out, Azura?” Lanta asked.
Dudley was bluffing. You can easily release us by pressing the ‘Empty Pods’ button on the console.
Hilbert ran over, located the button, and pressed it. The pods began to drain. Once they were empty of liquid, Hilbert caught Val as she stumbled out. She was unable to walk and barely able to talk, but her hand reached up to caressed her boyfriend’s cheek.
“Hilbert?”
“Yes, Val?”
“When are we going ring shopping?”
“As soon as you’d like, my dear.”
“Hey, I don’t want to ruin the touching moment, but I found this cool rock!” Lanta interrupted. Said rock was about the size of a basketball, with three indentations equidistant from each other on the spherical white stone. “That Dudley guy was trying to sneak towards the door with it, so I kicked him in the junk and took it! Here, you take it.”
Without waiting for an answer, Lanta shoved the stone into Hilbert’s backpack. At that moment, the ice surrounding the door melted. Azura knelt down and held out her hands, urgency clear in her voice.
“Quickly, take my hands.”
“What? Why?” Lanta asked.
“I’ll teleport us out of here, but we don’t have much time. Hilbert, hold tightly to Val and take my hand. Lanta, take my other hand.”
They did so without argument. Azura closed her eyes and focused, using her psychic power to pick a place far, far from where they were. The door opened, and the four teleported away in a flash of bright light, leaving the Team Plasma lab far behind them.
“Dudley! Are you alright?” Alpha asked, helping the scientist to his feet.
“I’ll be fine,” he groaned. “They may have gotten away with the stone, but Genesect is almost completely powered up. Inform the boss that they won’t get away for long.”
“Yes sir.”
“And get Whiskey and X-Ray in here. I need a medical examination.”
The grunts left the room, leaving Dudley to sit at the console. He checked the vitals, and once he was satisfied, he pressed the activate button. Genesect’s eyes with a red light, and she gazed at her creator, waiting for orders.
“Find that boy and his Volcarona. They can not be allowed to hold onto the stone!”
Genesect nodded, stepping out of her pod. She reviewed her mission as she reconfigured into High-Speed form, flying out the room in the blink of an eye.
Primary Objective: Locate and Recover Stone.
Secondary Objective: Peg Twink.
The Nurse Joy of Aspertia City was no stranger to unusual occurrences in her Pokemon Center. Incidents ranging from broken fingers to strained pelvises were more common than one might expect. However, when Hilbert, Val, Lanta, and Azura suddenly teleported into her lobby, she nearly spat out her coffee.
“Arceus above! Kid, what the hell did you do?!”
“I’ll explain later! Can you please help!”
“Of course! Audrey, help me with these patients!”
An Audino stepped from behind the counter and helped Hilbert get Val and Azura onto stretchers. They then got them to rooms in the back where Joy began her diagnosis. Audrey looked over to Hilbert with an eyebrow raised.
“Kid, why are your friends wet?”
“Um, you see… we were kidnapped by Team Plasma, and Val and Azura were put into suspension pods--”
“You were kidnapped?!” Joy all but screamed. “Okay, I’m going to call Officer Jenny, and you are going to have to explain everything to her. I need to make sure these two are okay. Go wait in the lobby.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Hilbert and Lanta stepped into the lobby and took a seat. Officer Jenny joined them shortly, and the two of them explained their stories, much to Officer Jenny’s disbelief.
“You mean to tell me that you came all the way from Nuvema?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Kid, you’re in Aspertia.”
“Aspertia?!”
“Yep. Unfortunately, this is out of my jurisdiction. I’ll have to speak with my counterpart in Accumula. I’ll file a report, but I doubt there’s anything out there. You probably just ran into a local gang or something.”
Hilbert sighed. “Alright.”
“I’m sorry I can’t help the two of you. In the meantime, I’d advise keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior.”
“Yes ma’am.”
As Officer Jenny left to go make a call, she nearly bumped another woman on her way into the center. She was blonde and wore red-rimmed glasses, a green hat with an orange jacket with a white shirt, finishing off her outfit with green shorts and orange shoes. The woman apologized for her clumsiness and straightened her red-rimmed glasses, looking around the room. Her gaze flicked over Hilbert before snapping back to him, and her eyes went wide.
“Hilbert?”
“Bianca?!”

Chapter Text
Route 1
Approximately 10 Minutes after the P2 Lab Incident
Genesect configured into normal mode and landed on the mainland of Route 1. Her red eyes began to scan the surrounding area for any traces of “the boy,” as her creator had called him. She didn’t like how arrogant and narcissistic Dudley was. The conversations she had with Azura while in suspension had painted a rather unflattering picture of the scientist, but unfortunately, her programming forced her to obey.
Her scans stopped suddenly on a group of footprints. Her database matched two of them to the boots of Team Plasma’s grunts, while the other two matched the foot of a Volcarona and Unova’s most popular pair of Running Shoes. Her heartbeat increased, a repressed moment of excitement rising in her chest.
Genesect had found the first step in locating the Twink.
“Oh my God, Hilbert?!” Bianca exclaimed. “What are you doing here? Who's this?”
“Uh…” Hilbert looked over to Azura, who had fallen asleep after all the excitement.
"I thought your partner was a Volcarona? Unless you've got another teammate or--" Bianca gasped, a scandalous, shocked look on her face. "You aren’t cheating on your partner, are you?!"
“What? No!”
“Oh. Well, that's a relief,” she sighed. “Anyway, what are you doing here?”
“It’s a long story.”
“Well, I’m waiting for someone, so you can tell me while we wait!”
“You’re waiting for someone?”
“Yeah! Remember how I became Professor Juniper’s assistant? Well, it’s about time for the next group of Trainers in Aspertia to begin their own journeys!”
“Oh, like you, Hilda, and Cheren?”
“That’s right!” Bianca beamed. “I have the Pokedexes and three Pokémon waiting for their new partners right now!”
“That’s great!” Hilbert replied. He raised a hand to shield his eyes from the blinding light Bianca’s smile emitted. “How’s Cheren? I haven’t talked to him for a few months.”
“Oh he’s great! He was a little stressed after Lenora retired. Filling a Gym Leader’s position isn’t an easy process. But, with enough guidance and from Elisabeth and I he’s been taking it in stride. You should come visit! It’d be nice to see you after so long!”
“I’d like that,” Hilbert agreed.
“Hilbert?” Nurse Joy interrupted. “Val’s stabilized. She hasn’t suffered any serious injuries, but she is suffering from malnutrition and exhaustion. We’ve got her on an IV until she stabilizes, but it shouldn’t be more than a few minutes. May I have your contact information to inform you of any updates?”
“Uh, sure.”
“Thank you. As I said earlier, Val is quickly recovering, and it shouldn’t be more than a few minutes.”
“Thanks.”
Nurse Joy bowed curtly and returned to her station, leaving Hilbert and Bianca to continue their conversation.
“Anyway, you should totally come and see Cheren! He’d love to see you!”
“Likewise, honestly. I haven’t battled yet, and I feel like he’d be a good training partner. Remember how he’d spend hours running battle simulations and strategies with us?”
“Mhm! I wouldn’t have made it that far outside of Nuvema without his help. Hilda was a little bit more capable than me, but I still think that Cheren overprepares sometimes.”
“He’s still a stick in the mud? I thought being engaged to you would make him more flexible.”
“Well, he is, but he still makes plans for an event, and then back-up plans, and back-up plans for those plans.”
“Are we discussing fiancées?” a familiar voice asked. Val walked into the room, a bit damp from a shower. Strutting in on shaky legs and clad in a hospital gown, she nonetheless commanded the presence in the room. Nurse Joy followed her in, a clipboard in hand.
“I hope my Hilbert hasn’t caused you any trouble,” Val joked.
“Not at all. Hello, I’m Bianca, one of Hilbert’s best friends.”
“A pleasure, Bianca. I’m Valentine, Hilbert’s partner. You can call me Val.”
“Oh, you’re the Volcorona Professor Juniper mentioned!”
“Only good things, I hope,” Val chittered. “Aurea can be a bit of a handful sometimes. Isn’t that right, Hilbert?”
“Yeah. Are you okay, Val? How are you feeling?” Hilbert asked, already standing next to his all but wife.
“Much better, now that I get to see you,” she hummed, wrapping her arms around her all but husband. She leaned down and kissed him, her lips radiant with the loving warmth of the sun. Hilbert basked in her embrace like a lazy Liepard sunning itself, happy to see her again.
“I’m glad you’re okay. Any weakness? Is there anything I can do for you?” Hilbert fretted.
“If I may,” Nurse Joy interjected. “Val, you should be all set. The healing machine here at the center fixed you right up. No major injuries were noted. I will give you a clean bill of health and release you from care.”
“Thank you, Nurse,” Hilbert replied.
“My pleasure. Thank you for waiting. We hope to see you again!” Nurse Joy bowed, turned on her heel, and returned to her station, helping a few youngsters.
Val turned back to Hilbert, her ambient body heat dying off the last of the dampness. “Honey, let’s wake up our friend. I want to thank her for getting us out of danger.”
Hilbert nodded. He gently nudged Azura, who mumbled something under her breath. Her orange eyes fluttered open, and she gracefully levitated from her seat to her feet. The Gardevoir sighed and blinked the sleep from her eyes.
“How long was I out?”
“About 15-20 minutes,” Hilbert replied. “This is Bianca, she’s one of my best friends. Bianca, this is Azura. Val and I rescued her from Team Plasma.”
“Pleased to meet you!” Bianca beamed.
“Hello again, Azura,” Val greeted.
“Greetings, Val. I trust your recovery was swift?”
“Yes. And I hope that you got the rest you needed.”
“Likewise,” Azura hummed. “Hilbert, while I would love to continue this conversation, I am currently in the middle of an air-conditioned building wearing a soaked medical gown. I am
freezing.
I humbly ask that we move to a less frigid location, perhaps where one might acquire some clothes?”
“What an excellent idea, Azura. Do you know any shops nearby, honey?”
“Uh…”
“Oh, you need clothes?” Bianca chimed in. “There’s a new boutique in town, down the street from here called ‘Le Hex Boutique.’ The name is a bit on the nose if you ask me but I think it’ll have what you’re looking for. Follow me!”
The blonde bounced out of the room with a spring in her step, almost leaving her companions in the dust. They followed her down the street past a few houses, turning a corner past a home with a fenced-in backyard and a little pond nearby. Approximately two blocks down from that was a black boutique that gave off a faint, ominous aura. The windows displayed dresses in a Gothic style, featuring deep blues, purples, and blacks, which created a somber atmosphere surrounding the shop.
“Here we are! Let’s go in--” Bianca’s phone went off, and she answered it. “Hello? Oh, hi Nate! Yes, I’ll be over at the lookout in a moment. I’m excited to meet you as well, and I’m sure your partner Pokémon is just as excited as I am! See you in a few!”
She hung up the phone and sighed. “Sorry, it looks like a rain check on catching up. Duty calls! Text me when you can. Cheren and I would love to have you over for dinner! Bye!”
“Bye!”
Bianca raced off, leaving Hilbert, Val, and Azura alone.
“Two years later, and she’s still the same girl who wanted to get out of her hometown. I still can’t believe that she and Cheren are getting married.”
“What makes you say that, Hilbert?”
“Cheren’s the kind of guy to be careful and calculated. He’ll plan out things weeks in advance and takes his responsibilities very seriously. Bianca, on the other hand, is a free spirit. She
hates
being confined in one space and being coddled. Her dad almost didn’t let her leave Nuvema Town to go on her journey with Cheren and my sister, Hilda.”
“I see. Bianca and Cheren seem to complement each other very well. Cheren helps keep Bianca organized, while she provides spontaneity in his life. They will make a wonderful couple.”
“Yeah…”
“Do we know when the wedding is or if we’re invited?”
“No, actually. I haven’t heard anything on that front.” Hilbert replied.
“Not to change the subject, but shall we enter this establishment? I require some new clothes after mine were disposed of.”
“Oh, right. Here, after you,” Hilbert said. He held the door open for Azura and Val. Val stepped through, but Azura motioned for Hilbert to proceed.
“Please, I insist,” Azura smiled.
“Alright,” Hilbert shrugged. He followed Val inside. The ambient temperature immediately dropped. Even with Val right next to him, Hilbert shivered slightly, noting that it was also much, much darker in this building than it appeared outside. Besides the light from outside, the only light came from ghostly, pale purple flames atop candelabras, casting an eerie glow into the room.
“H-Hello?” Hilbert called, his voice hitching in his throat.
The door suddenly slammed shut behind Val and Hilbert. Their stomachs turned leaden when they heard the deadbolt click into place. Hilbert immediately went for the handle, only to find it jammed.
“Hibert? Valentine?!” Azura frantically cried from the other side of the door. “Open the door!”
“We can’t! The door’s jammed!” Hilbert screamed. The latch refused to yield.
Val reared around, her hands glowing with ambient flame. “Azura, get this door open right now or so Arceus help me--”
“There’s some kind of psychic barrier on the door! I can’t get it open!” Azura fussed back.
“WELL, DO SOMETHING!” Hilbert yelled, banging on the door.
“Y…o…u…”
Hilbert and Val froze. Very slowly, they turned around, seeing nothing but the eerie purple glow of the candles. The flickering flames cast shadows into the room, forming dark, foreboding shapes. No one appeared to be in the room with them, but the two knew otherwise.
“W-Who's there?!” Hilbert demanded, trying to sound brave.
The room remained silent. The trainer huddled next to his Volcorona, the two of them looking around the room at the shadows that shifted, forming twisted, sinister shapes. A shadow with a crooked grin sneered at them, while another appeared as if it wore a witch’s hat, and a third appeared to be a poor imitation of a Pikachu.
“You…”
“Show y-yourself!” Val commanded, weakly creating an Ember.
The shadows slithered away, and one by one, the candles went out. Darkness filled the boutique, with only the faint light of Val's prepared Ember providing any illumination. Hilbert took one of Val’s hands, and the two took a tentative step forward, nearly screaming as the floor creaked under their feet.
“H-Hilbert?” Val whispered very, very quietly.
“Y-Yeah?” Hilbert replied, his heart pounding in his chest.
“Whatever happens, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Hilbert suddenly felt a cold breath on the back of his neck. Hands as cold as the grave latched onto his shoulders. He froze, his entire body rigid as a voice whispered into his ear.
“Yes… You are the one!”
The screams of Val and Hilbert filled the boutique. He ran forward, wheeling around to face whatever was behind him. The candelabras flared to life, filling the room with purple light. A pale woman with long, unruly dark hair that reached the middle of her back, and a dark purple headband. She wore a dark purple dress with a black turtleneck and a spiderweb pattern around her torso. Her eyes had spirals and were manic and crazed, matching her deranged expression.
“Kehehehehehehehe…” the woman cackled, her gaze never leaving Hilbert.
“Who are you?! What the hell is going on?!” Hilbert demanded. He raised his hands, ready to defend Val.
“KEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE!” the woman cackled again, taking a step forward. Hilbert summoned all of his courage, feeling Val preparing for battle behind him.
The electric lights in the boutique suddenly switched on. The candles relit, and the windows cleared, letting in light from the outside. The strange woman stopped laughing and cleared her throat, bowing slightly. “Welcome to
Le Hex Boutique.
My name is Helena. Can I help you two find anything?”
Hilbert and Val stared at her, absolutely flabbergasted.
“Is something wrong?” Helena asked.
“I think you stunned them into silence,” another, more mature voice replied from behind the stunned couple. They turned around to see two other women who looked very similar to Helena. The first looked like her, but shorter, and wore a dark purple-grey button-up shirt with a matching skirt. Her hair was cut in a short bob. The second was taller than the others, her greying dark hair flowing over her shoulders. Similar to her companions, she wore a gothic dress, but hers had open-ended sleeves and a corset around her middle. A bow was tied around a large button on her chest, and she wore two lavender ball earrings and lavender lipstick.
They were accompanied by a Gengar woman dressed in punk attire, many piercings with black eyeshadow and lipstick, a Mismagius dressed like a sexy witch, and a Mimikyu clad in a cozy-looking patchwork off-yellow Pikachu onesie.
“It’s been a while since you’ve scared customers this badly, Helena,” the smaller woman said. “I’m surprised they haven’t knocked down the door yet.”
“Will someone tell me what’s going on?” Hilbert asked. “I came here to buy clothes, not to get jumpscared! Just who are you people?!”
“I am Amelie,” the tallest one said, regaining her composure. “And these are my daughters. You’ve already met Helena, and this is my younger, Belle.”
“Hello,” Belle waved politely.
“And these are Grendel, Morgan, and Mimi,” Amelie gestured at the Gengar, Mismagius, and Mimikyu, respectively. “They help around in the shop. As my daughter said earlier, welcome to Le Hex Boutique, owned and run by Hex Maniacs . I offer my most heartfelt apologies. Our greeting can be a bit eccentric at times. Might I offer you a discount of 15 percent and complimentary Moo-Moo Milk as a recompense for your inconvenience?”
“Whoa, whoa, slow down. Can we go back to the ‘knocking down the door?’ Does this happen often?” Val asked incredulously.
“More often than we’d like,” Belle replied. “Mom, why do we still do the ‘haunted ghost boutique’ bit?”
“Belle, it is a haunted boutique.”
“Well, yeah. But do we
have
to turn off the lights, darken the windows, and have Grendel, Morgan, and Mimi be spooky shadows? I think it’s a bit much.”
“Wait,” Hilbert interrupted. “If it was you turning off the candles and having your Pokémon be spooky, then who was messing with the door?”
Helena cocked her head in confusion. “The door?”
“It wouldn’t open when I tried it.”
“That shouldn’t be an issue,” Amelie replied. “We don’t lock the door unless it’s needed.”
“Then why did Azura say that there was a psychic--”
The door unlocked and opened. Azura stepped through, wiping tears of laughter from her eyes. “That was me.”
Val’s expression darkened. “You scared us half to death.”
“I know!” Azura chuckled. “I love pulling this trick. Amelie can attest to that!”
“Wait, you know her?” Hilbert asked.
“Mhm. Amelie and her daughters are old friends of mine.”
“Azura!” Amelia cried happily. She met the Gardevoir with a formal Kalosian greeting, kissing each side of her cheek. “It has been too long, ma cherie.”
“Likewise,” Azura replied. She opened her arms wide, immediately swarmed by the Hex Maniacs and their Pokemon in a group hug.
“Lady Azura, it is a pleasure to see you again. The spirits told me you would visit soon,” Helena mused ominously.
“Helena, as eloquent as ever. And Belle! How have you been?”
“Honestly, business has been booming here in Aspertia. We’re just having a slow day today.”
“Azura, you sly bitch. How are you?” Grendel asked.
“Language,” Morgan corrected.
“Let Azura speak, Morgan,” Mimi fussed.
“Well, I found a very nice young man and his almost wife. They saved me from Team Plasma,” Azura explained.
“Team Plasma?” Belle asked. “I thought they disbanded two years ago.”
“They did,” Hilbert replied. “My sister was the one who defeated their leader. You haven’t happened to have seen her, have you?”
“The Lost Champion, Hilda? No, sorry, I don’t think anyone’s seen her for two years.”
Hilbert sighed. “Thanks anyway. Now, I came here to get clothes for my wife.”
“We’re not married yet, honey,” Val corrected. “Keep your horizons open~.”
“Anyway, Val and Azura need new clothes, and I was hoping that you three could help us select something nice.”
“‘Nice’ is putting it gently, cher,” Amelie laughed. “I know what my old friend Azura wants, but as for your partner, I will need to see what she wants. Madame, if you don’t mind, please follow me.”
Val chuckled. “Oooh, my own little trip into gothic Kalosian fashion! Hilbert, take a look around. I’ll be busy.”
She followed Amelie, Azura, and Morgan to another section of the store. Hilbert stood there awkwardly, unsure of what to do as the ladies did their shopping. Belle sat at the register, eyeing Hilbert from her station. Helena turned to Hilbert and bowed.
“Thank you for rescuing Azura.”
“Oh, right. I meant to ask, how do you know her?”
The Hex Maniac paused. “Azura… is a friend of my mother. She’s more or less our aunt.”
“Oh, so she’s your mom’s partner?”
“No, not in either sense. She’s… well, she loves our mother, but in a platonic way. Anyway, Azura and my mom, Amelie, have known each other for a very, very long time. She’s lived with us for as long as I can remember.”
“I see.”
“Azura’s been missing for quite some time.”
“How long was she gone for?”
Belle interrupted, “I wanna say a year and a half? We filed reports with Officer Jenny, but there was only so much we could do. We’ve been worried sick.”
“It sounds like she’s more than just a friend.”
“You would be right. She was not frightened by the spirits that followed my mother, nor the spirits that dwell with our family now,” Helena replied. “Her presence has been most welcome in this family, and we hope that she will remain.”
“How did your mother and Azura meet?”
“An occultist convention when they were both young, I believe.”
“Cool.”
“Yeah, it was cool as hell,” Grendel replied.
“Indeed. Anywho, may I interest you in a bottle of fresh Moo-Moo Milk?”
Helena presented a bottle on a tray. The bottle was decorated with a Miltank and looked delicious. Suddenly, Hilbert was aware of how thirsty he was.
“How much?”
“Nothing. It is my apology for frightening you twice.”
Gingerly, Hilbert took the bottle. It was still warm, which was really odd because Hilbert was sure that the nearest ranch was a half-hour walk from Aspertia. Shrugging, he popped the lid and drained the entire bottle in a few gulps. The milk was incredibly refreshing, warm, and soothing as it slid down his throat. Hilbert let out a satisfied sigh and wiped his upper lip.
“Delicious. Thank you so much.”
“My pleasure,” Helena blushed. Hilbert didn’t notice the look that Belle was giving her sister. Grendel snickered under her breath, trying not to say anything.
“Hilbert! You have to see this outfit!” Val called.
“Excuse me, my partner needs me,” Hilbert said. He placed the empty bottle down on the tray and headed over to another section of the boutique. “What’s this outfit-- Oh. My. Arceus.”
Val was dressed in a stunning white gown. The front had a black stripe down the middle with blue stripes on either side. The blue stripes were segmented and had a black dot in the middle. The gown was sleeveless, allowing each of Val’s four arms to maneuver easily. The back was open, allowing her wings to be unfurled in all of their glory. The fluff from her body accented her neck and shoulders, acting almost like an organic scarf. Her horns and piercing blue eyes gleamed at Hilbert with mischief.
“I’d ask how I look, darling, but I can tell that you’re already stunned by me~,” Val purred, closing Hilbert’s agape mouth with a single hand.
“Val, you look radiant.”
“I should certainly hope so! Come here, handsome~.”
Val kissed Hilbert, wrapping her not-husband in a multi-armed embrace. They kissed deeply and passionately, not caring where they were or who was watching. The only thing that mattered was that they had each other.
“Oh my,” Azura observed. “Pardon me. I hate to interrupt your reunion.”
The couple split apart and turned to look at Azura, who had dressed herself in a black gothic dress, complete with a wide-brimmed black sunhat and parasol.
“Oh my Arceus, you look amazing!” Val gushed. “Black really complements the blue and orange. Is this how you normally dress?”
“Yes. Normally, it’s a bit fancier than this, but I think this is more practical for long journeys.”
“So soon, cherie?” Amelie butt in. “You just got back!”
“I know, Amelie, but I have a feeling that these two are going to get themselves in a lot of trouble. They’ll need my help.”
“Wait, what’s happening?” Hilbert asked.
Azura smiled at him. “If it’s not too much trouble to ask, I’d like to join you and Val on your journey. If you’re looking for your sister, the Gym Leaders might know something about her whereabouts. You’ll probably get an audience with them if you manage to beat them in a battle.”
“...you want to help me find my sister?”
“You rescued me from Team Plasma. It’s the least I can do to repay you.”
“I mean, all I did was press a button to open a tube…”
“You also helped with an escape and stole vital data from their lab. They’re going to be looking for you.”
“Azura’s right, Hilbert,” Val interjected. “I’m only one woman. I can’t always be there to protect both of us, and frankly speaking, neither of us has been outside of Nuvema Town for quite some time. Azura might know more about the area than us.”
“I do. Unfortunately, my knowledge ends once we get to Castelia City. We’ll have to pick up other allies then.”
“I see. Val, are you okay with this?”
“Absolutely! It’ll be nice to have another woman around to talk with.”
“Okay. Azura, how do we formally make you a member of my team?”
“Technically, I’m a ‘wild’ Pokémon. I do not have a Trainer, nor have I had one. You’ll need to ‘catch’ me, so get your Poké Balls and just let me tap it.”
“That’s how that works?” Hilbert asked, confusion evident on his face. “Cheren mentioned something like that when we were kids, but that was years ago.”
Azura paled. “...you don’t know how to catch Pokémon?”
Hilbert likewise paled. “I never got to go on a journey before now, and I see that I am severely underqualified.”
“Do you even have any Poké Balls?”
Hilbert rummaged in his bag, finding his Pokedex, a few Potions, his wallet, and the weird stone that Lanta had shoved in there the day before, but no Poke Balls. “No, I don’t.”
Azura turned to Val, looking her over as well. “Did he ever catch you?”
“No,” Val sighed. “The only thing he captured was my heart. I don’t know how we both missed that. You would think that working with Professor Juniper would expose one to how Trainer-Pokemon relationships worked, but she was busy with research most of the time. Not to mention that she sent Hilbert and I on a short walk to visit Accumula Town, and that’s when we were kidnapped.”
Azura pinched her nose. “Okay, this is bad, but it’s not terrible. We’ll just have to go to the Trainer School and do a crash course.”
“Shouldn’t I pay for the clothes first?” Hilbert asked, desperately trying to change the subject.
“Oh! Yes, monsieur. Right this way. Belle! Ring this young man up! And throw in the elemental stone promotion!” Amelie hollered to the front of the store.
The new ramshackle party assembled at the front of the store, where Hilbert paid for Azura and Val’s outfits. He winced, realizing that he had little to no money left, but he knew it was worth it. The Hex Maniacs also threw in a package of a Water Stone and a Sun Stone free of charge as thanks for returning Azura to them, as brief as the reunion was.
“Come back anytime,” Helena said. “You are the one, after all.”
“What does that mean?” Hilbert asked.
“Don’t worry about it,” Belle shrugged. “Safe travels!”
“You’re welcome to visit! Come visit often!” Amelie said one last time as she hugged Azura. “Goodbye, Azura. Hopefully your next visit will come sooner,
oui?
”
“I promise, Amelie.”
“Thank you. And you, Hilbert?”
“Yes?”
“Please take care of my friend. She means a great deal to me and my daughters.”
“Of course.”
With that, the trio set off towards the Trainer School as the Hex Maniacs waved after them. Hilbert was a little embarrassed that he wasn’t prepared for a journey, but that was okay. He had Val and now Azura to help guide him. Together, they’d find out about what happened to Hilda and bring her home.
Notes:
I wasn't sure how Poke Balls worked in this universe either until right now. Still figuring it out.
Oh, right. Belle is based off Beta Hex Maniac and Amelie is based off the Z-A design for Hex maniac or as I call her the hag maniac.
