Chapter 1: Rumors

Chapter Text

Canary was born but not fully raised in Gotham, Because of this her star city mindset prevents her from knowing more than she should. She walks around ,head held high, some old Gothamite watch her fly way to far from her nest, he turns to his grandson.

“tha ol heada hers gonna get her drag down all the way from flyin high with robin to amusement ally withda joker”

“But pops why she acting like she own the place”

“That women’s names is Dinah, used ta live near the nice parts way back, went to star for a couple years now she’s to good for us, she don’t even know who da joker is.”

“But if she from Gotham why does she not know who da joker is, she a fake thats for sure”

“Nah kid,it’s not her fault she doesn’t know who da killer clown is, she ,like tha rest of the world think we are lying about our spirits be them good or bad, now come on we got places to be boy.”

The women, Dinah, was oblivious to the conversation about her, she watches her surroundings, to her she is being smart she holds to small pocket knife and walks in the light to be seen so no one would jump her, but to gothamites she’s nothing more than an idiot, what would a small, noticeable and predictable knife do against a killer, and everyone in Gotham, be it children and adults, stay in the shadows where the bats protects them.

Canary or Dinah stops in front of the building , she grimaced at the sight, the apartment complex was covered in mold, it seemed to be leaning more towards the right and the door before her looked close to falling off, schooling her face she walked inside.

A women sat behind the desk reading a newspaper, when the other women didn’t bother looking up Dinah Decided to make her presence known.
“Hello I was wondering if you could help me” Dinah tried and failed to bring back a Gotham accent.

The women, didn’t bother looking up, blabbed out “yea no I’m not helping a dam tourist why ya come here in da first place hmm now if ya here for someone in da apartment for business all I ask is ya don’t get blood on my carpet got it.”

Dinah kept calm “it’s not for that type of business, I’m here for my old friend you heard of him, David Bradley, he lives on the fourth floor”

“Yea yea I know ‘em, here just go up already why botha me”

Dinah, who’s gotten use to gothamites rude attitude, walks up the stairs to the highest floor, walking down the hallway she stops in front of the second door towards the left and knocked.

“Damnit Molly if your here to complain again I’ll shove this remote so far up your as-“ stopping mid sentence when he saw who was behind the door.

“Well hello Dinah been to long why ya here all the way to Gotham? this isn’t something illegal is it?”

“No it’s not David it’s more a gathering of information, by the way how’s the kid”

“Oh Dinah she’s great, she got one of those Wayne scholarships and is now in college, smart girl that one, but I know you don’t wanna hear that, you want info so tell me what type of info you want”

She leans in, “I’m a consultant of the league because of my knowledge of Gotham, they sent me here to first try to establish a potential place for the league so they could make Gotham safer, and second learn more about the stories of the ‘Batman’”. She said the last part with obvious sarcasm without her meaning to.

After her speech she expected him to start talking but he didn’t, after a moment of uncomfortable silence she finally broke.

“Come on Davy don’t you want the league here to protect you”

“Now look here Dinah, me and the rest of us gothamites don’t need your league to protect us, the world abandoned of us a while back, you don’t getta come here looking like ya own the place, and claim ta come and save us from our own damn city, you don’t even believe about da bats or da joker or any of our spirits, now get your fake Gothamite looking self outta me apartment before I tell one of the bats.”

With that she got up and left in shock.

Walking down the street, she finally notice how out of place she looked, she stood the light while everyone stood in the shadows, the more she notice the more other things popped out to her, like how everyone was most likely whispering about her.

Now hiding in the shadows like she would as Canary she slipped from shadow to shadow looking with a new perspective, no longer did her eyes see herself as a women bringing hope and light to a poor innocent community, she than saw herself as what she was, an outsider, an invader who claims to know better but was really just forcing ideas onto a already developed community.

Looking around she started to get the feel of Gotham, she started to slowly understand the fear of spirits by the rumors she heard she would fear the spirits too.
She listens to chatter and whisper of a spirit hero, it’s family, and the monsters that dwell deep in Gotham underbelly. However she was still skeptical about the spirits part so she decided to stay way past planned and well into the night.

Night hit fast in Gotham, a chilly breeze flew past her while she stayed on the roofs of the buildings, now hidden behind her canary mask she look upon the empty and dirty streets, she knows gothamites are hiding away in their homes and the shadows, it scares her, she watches and waits, the more she stayed the more she felt watched and observed, as if a creature was deciding if she would be a tasty snack.

“BOoM”

A explosion near the harbor pushes her from her thoughts, she runs towards it in hopes to help any civilians caught in it.

She saw a couple people running away but they acted as though this happens a lot, this worries her.

She hides on a building near by, but she heard sickening laughter that bounces of the walls from building to building like a warning a predator coming near, she couldn’t move.

Than she saw it, a clown, probably the same from the rumors, dancing around in the flames laughing.

She notices movement from the building next to hers, looking up to the much taller building, under the moonlight was a shape of a humanoid Bat, the bat flew down towards the clowns attacking it, she took out a camera in hopes to capture the supposed spirits to show the league later on.

She only got one blurry photo of the to mythical beings before she felt a presence beside her.

Jumping she makes distance from the creature next to her, getting a full look, the creature had strips of bright blue, pale skin, you could see dark blackish red blood that flows down its body, it smiled what would seem like a gentle smile if it didn’t have shape deadly teeth, it started to chattering like bird.

Deciding she had enough of Gotham she turned and ran away.
