Chapter Text
Chapter 1: Welcome
In this world, everything is regulated for the greater good. Or at least, almost everything was regulated – there were a few cracks here and there to allow things to slip, but for the most part, society was regulated.
Heroes were given permission to use their quirks to keep the public safe. They had licenses and positions and agencies to allow blessed individuals to make a living out of their genetic gifts.
In a similar fashion, alphas and omegas were kept a close eye on.
Hundreds of years ago, society was rampant with savage alphas who sat on top of society as elites. But when you had so many alphas running around, there was violence and political disputes bound to erupt.
That was history though – overtime, society evolved. Alphas and omegas weren’t as common. In fact, betas made up about 98% of the world population now. The genes present in alphas and omegas just weren’t as common to pass down. Sure, quirks evolved like CRAZY (hey, people could make a living out of them), but alphas and omegas?
Nope. They only represented about 2% now.
This had its own pros and cons.
People didn’t have to worry about alphas always running into each other, trying to assert dominance. Omegas were no longer constantly in danger because a vast majority of people they saw were betas. And betas? Well, they could live as peacefully as one could imagine in a world of quirks.
That’s why here in Japan, everything was regulated for the greater good. Society always came first, even if it meant a few hardships for some.
For their safety, once they presented, omegas were required to live in government funded dorms. It was essentially a community that provided them with everything – schooling, food, extracurricular activities, etc. This way, they wouldn’t have to worry about being forcefully claimed by an alpha.
Alphas were free to roam as they pleased once they presented, never put in contact with an omega unless they were already claimed. They still held the same power that they held hundreds of years ago, normally as an elite within society with all the riches you could imagine. But when it came time for an alpha to possibly find an omega, it was a rigorous process.
Lots of ridiculous paperwork and an approval process that required both physical and mental health checks, and even an overall “character psychological audit” to ensure they wouldn’t end up abusing their future omega.
Once all of that tedious labor was done, alphas would be able to enter a community supervised. They were given files on all the omegas present and were allowed to meet and interview them until they found their mate. For most, it was a quick process – alphas typically knew the moment they inhaled the pheromones who the right one was.
Whenever an alpha was onsite, it would be an absolute frenzy. Omegas panicking as they made themselves as approachable and presentable as possible. After all, they could be meeting their mate for the very first time! First impressions were HUGE and they’d gone through so many lessons about being the perfect omega. It was time to put all of that to practice because who knows how long they’d have to wait before they found their perfect mate.
And that’s why, you had holed yourself up in your bedroom.
As soon as news came in that an alpha would be here, you ran as fast as you could.
This whole process made you queasy, but it bothered you to no end how gullible people could be. Why on earth would they just stand around like fresh produce, waiting to be chosen by an alpha as he shopped the aisles?
Sure, the idea of finding a mate sounded nice, and these regulations were here for a reason. But the idea of not having any say and just allowing an alpha to sweep you up and take you home after a simple “hello” really bothered you.
Over the years, you’d said goodbye to so many friends who’d been chosen. Most of whom, kept in touch and were absolutely ecstatic about their new lives, but for some odd reason, this whole situation just wouldn’t settle in your stomach.
You’d been given enough lectures from teachers and mentors and seniors, but fuck it.
Who cares about knowing how to sew or making sure the sheets are folded correctly? If you were somebody’s soulmate, wouldn’t they love you regardless of how good at chores you were, or how docile and timid you could be?
You rolled your eyes as you heard a commotion outside – omegas squealing at whoever must’ve entered the premises. They were normally famous or rich, after all, alphas still sat at the top of the hierarchy.
Trying to distract yourself, you plopped onto your chair and opened up your laptop to keep yourself busy with the online courses you had signed up for. You’d already finished all the required education for Japanese citizens, but with being stuck in the omega community and not being allowed to work, you had to find some other ways to keep yourself busy. College was pretty cool – at least you got to choose what courses you wanted to take. No more of those silly little literature classes where you had to dissect some haiku that was written while dinosaurs still roamed the earth.
You were completely lost into this week’s readings when a knock on your door startled you. Looking up warily towards it, you realized that the commotion outside your room had gotten louder and louder. Why were people coming your way?
Before you could reply, the door opened, revealing the manager of your dorm unit.
“[Y/N] is the last one, you’ll have to forgive her manners. She’s always hiding in her room,” the old lady chuckled. “Oh, there you are dear!”
“Takamura-san, what’s wr-“
You froze, staring at the sweet old woman as she entered your space with a tall, muscular man. He had a mess of blonde hair, narrowed carmine eyes that were just as intimidating as you had seen on screen. Instead of his usual costume, he had on jeans and a black t-shirt, but you still recognized him easily.
Ground Zero.
The Ground Zero was in your room, inspecting the general vicinity before his eyes landed you, hunched over your desk and frozen in fear.
“[Y/N]! This is Bakugou-san. He’s here for a quick visit.”
“Uh…” Your eyes wavered between the two, unsure of how to approach the situation. The alphas that came to the community always found their mate, never having to bother meeting you. There were a few times where you’d been out and crossed paths with one, but you must’ve smelled off to them because they never approached you.
“Oh don’t just sit there, dear! Come here,” she crossed over and quickly grabbed your forearm, pulling you to your feet. You stumbled on the way before you were forced to stand in front of Ground Zero, choosing to stare at his feet. “I doubt you’ll be interested in her though, she’s not got the best grades when it comes to housework and-“
“Look at me.”
Your head turned so fast you felt dizzy. The blonde man hadn’t even commanded you but you couldn’t stop yourself from looking into his eyes. He crossed his arms as you kept the stare, unable to look away. You knew Ground Zero was attractive, but seeing him up close like this? His sharp jaw line and the faint stubble on his chin, he was beautiful.
You felt like you were staring at him for eternity before he finally spoke up again.
“What’s your quirk?”
“Huh?” Your brow furrowed in confusion.
“Your quirk,” he grunted again.
“Um…” Your eyes lowered to stare at his neck. Maybe that’d be less intimidating. “It’s called Sun Stealing… I can emit bright light or heat like the sun. It’s stronger when I’m in direct sunlight.”
“You know how to use it?”
Your eyes snapped back up to him, bewildered at where this conversation was going. “Yes? It’s my quirk, of course I know how to use it. I’m not stupid.”
“Oh dear,” Takamura brought her hands up to her face, embarrassed at your rude words. “I do apologize for her behavior. She’s always been such a tough cookie in school.”
Bakugou didn’t say anything. His eyes waved up and down as he seemed to be inspecting your form before finally grunting, “Let’s test it then.”
“W-what?” You gaped. “Test what?”
“How good you are with your quirk,” he didn’t even glance back as he started walking out of your room. “Come on, let’s go to that shitty field outside.”
Takamura looked equally as flabbergasted at the man’s behavior. This was a first for her, but she couldn’t exactly deny the request from such an important client. She grabbed your shoulders and steered you straight out. You were too in shock to even fight it, not able to recognize the hordes of omegas who had gathered outside to try and listen in, but were now following you all out to the recreational fields.
Before you knew it, you were standing outside on the soccer field. Everybody had chosen to watch from the sidelines as you stood in the middle facing Bakugou a few feet away. When Takamura had tried to question his actions, he simply waved her off before you saw him take a stance that you’d seen millions of times on TV – he was getting ready to fight.
“W-wait,” you took a step back, fear flooding your veins. Was this some type of public humiliation? “What’s going on?”
“Try and stop me,” he grunted, his eyes narrowing as he placed his arms behind his back. You didn’t have a second to react before you heard the loud explosion. You automatically brought your hands up to protect your ears, but the sight of him flying towards you but your body in auto drive. Before he could reach you, you yelped and channeled heat straight down your legs and into your feet, blasting hot hair and forcing you straight up into the sky.
He raised an eyebrow at you but came following with the help of another explosion.
‘What the fuck is going on?’ Your heart was beating rapidly as you ungracefully kept shooting hot air out from your feet, trying to fly away from this alpha with a crazed look in his eyes. You easily cleared distance away from him and away from the soccer field, but you were having trouble keeping a straight route. There’d been plenty of times when you’d practiced flying with your quick, but it wasn’t something you did a lot.
Plus, he was a pro fucking hero. Of course he’d be able to catch you!
Zig zagging through the air, you headed towards the baseball field hoping he would just give up the chase. Unable to get a proper landing, you somersaulted into the grass of the outer fields and landed on your back. You could hear his explosion as he stopped right in front of you, arm reaching out towards you.
Not knowing what his intensions were, you let out the brightest light from your body, blinding him as you stood. Without thinking, you immediately brought your hands up and shot a blast of hot air at him in an attempt to get some distance between you two. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.
Bakugou stumbled backwards slightly before regaining control and holding himself up right. You winced, realizing that you’d just attempted to hurt the man, but who could blame you? You had no fucking idea what was going on.
You waited patiently for his reaction, but all he did was stare at you with those narrowed eyes again. He looked angry and it scared you knowing that such an intimidating alpha was cornering you like this.
After a moment, as you heard the others finally running to catch up to where the two of you had gone, he stepped closer to you. Your body froze like stone, as he started leaning down. Down until he was eye level, down until his eyes stared at your lips for a moment, before he turned his head and his face was right next to your neck.
Scared that he’d try and bite you, your arms trembled as they landed on his chest, trying to push him away. He didn’t budge though, instead he grabbed your wrists and held them still. You heard him take a deep breath. At the same time, you could smell the calming pheromones he was letting out.
You couldn’t believe how you had missed it before – but he smelled like… burning caramel. It was such a strange scent to associate with an alpha, but it helped calm you a bit as he took one more breath before finally getting up and letting go of your wrists.
You stared up at him awe, unable to form thoughts in your head. He kept your stare for a moment, his eyes softening at the slightest before he resumed his usual angry scowl. He turned away to acknowledge Takamura who was catching her breath from running so far.
“I’ll take her,” he said clearly, his arms crossing his chest. He had spoken the words with such finality, the others were silent while Takamura simply turned to look at you with a blank stare, unable to register what had just happened.
You blinked. Staring back at her before your head shakily turned to look up at him again.
What?
