Adrian Has Sensory Overload

Summary:

You know that feeling when everything around you is ten times louder than it usually is? Or when the way your clothes touch you sends you into a complete panic because something about it isn’t right. The way your skin crawls because everyone around you just won’t stop. Adrian used to get these days a lot when he was younger but as he grew up he became better at managing it, but sometimes there were days that just completely fucked up his routine.

~

As someone who is autistic, I wanted to write this because honestly, I relate to Adrian a lot in this way. The way people treat him like he's crazy is because he doesn't process emotions in the same way they do. The way he acts around others and presents himself is something I struggled with greatly growing up. So here we have autistic Adrian, enjoy!!

Notes:

This one is dedicated to my friend Scotty, he knows why :)

Work Text:

You know that feeling when everything around you is ten times louder than it usually is? Or when the way your clothes touch you sends you into a complete panic because something about it isn’t right . The way your skin crawls because everyone around you just won’t stop. Adrian used to get these days a lot when he was younger but as he grew up he became better at managing it, but sometimes there were days that just completely fucked up his routine. Getting out of bed felt like more of a chore than it usually did, the bed just felt safer. He didn’t want to leave the safety of his blankets but he knew some things needed to be done. Sometimes he thought about letting the others know about days like these, not like it wasn’t noticeable, but it’s hard to bring it up. They think he’s a sociopath or whatever but he’s not, he’s just a bit different than they are. So the best thing for him to do was get up and get ready to be a participating member of society.

Adrian had taken almost an hour to get ready. He was slow-moving and he had spent the night with Chris so he didn’t have the comfort of his apartment. Walking out of the bedroom he instantly went over to the couch to lay down, trying to slow his mind enough to think.

“What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you just lying there?” Chris asked, staring at him from the small kitchen.

“Chris it’s a bad day and my thoughts are too loud so shush,” Adrian replied from his curled-up position on the couch.

“I don’t know what that means dude,” Chris said but he wasn’t going to get anything out of Adrian until the other was read.

Adrian could hear Chris sigh but he needed to gather his overwhelming thoughts and shove them in a box before they went and met the others. After a few more moments of lying on the couch, he sat back up and saw Chris watching him with a confused expression but shrugged it off.

“Are you going to eat before we go?” The older man asked.

Adrian stood up and bounced his way over to Chris, pressing a kiss to the other's cheek, “I’m not feeling hungry, maybe we can pick something up for lunch?”

“Whatever you want but you slept in this morning so we gotta head out,” Chris replied, smiling as his boyfriend responded with a nod.

The ride was torcher. Too many sounds, the way his pants were touching his legs, and the fact that Chris was dead silent was killing him. Getting out of the car was worse but honestly, he didn’t think he could be pushed further obviously, he was wrong. Stepping into the shitty office they have was like walking into a club when you have a blinding migraine. Without thinking he brought his hands to his ears to block out as much sound as possible. He felt Chris behind him, gently placing a hand on his shoulder as support. Eventually, he removed his hands and went to the center table, sitting down unnecessarily hard.

“What’s wrong with him?” Harcourt asked Chris, pointing towards Adrian.

“I don’t know, he said it was a bad day,” Chris shrugged.

“Okay, then why did he come?” She asked.

“Why would I know? It’s not like he would have listened to me if I told him to stay home.” Chris responded, sounding aggravated.

Adrian wasn’t sure when he started to tune everything out but eventually, the talking turned into white noise. Everything felt slowed down and he knew he was hyperventilating but he couldn't stop. There was too much happening, too much noise, and too many feelings. It was so overwhelming and he felt that he would start crying. The talking must have stopped because there was no longer any white noise, just blissful silence. He knew he looked crazy, an almost thirty-year-old sobbing because there was too much happening in his head. Feeling a hand on his shoulder sent him into overdrive. Suddenly he was up from his seat and swinging towards whatever was touching him.

“Don’t touch me!” Adrian all but shouted, breathing heavily as he did.

“Adrian calm down, you’re okay,” He could hear someone say.

The pressure in his ears just kept getting worse and he felt like his head was going to explode. Instead of trying to calm down and focus on breathing like a normal person would Adrian sank to the floor and burst out into tears, this time he could tell he was crying. It wasn’t the normal crying, it was the type of cry where you couldn’t catch your breath. Now, most people get embarrassed by crying in front of their coworkers but it felt so good to get off of his chest. There was shuffling around his and a tense atmosphere but he could care less.

“Adrian, are you okay?” He once again heard someone talking, this time he knew it was Chris but he couldn’t respond so he just shook his head no.

“Okay, that's all right. Do you want to go back home?” Chris asked softly.

All Adrian could do was nod his head, yes, tears still streaming down his face.

“Then let’s go home,” Chris responded, tugging Adrian to his feet.

Adrian simply followed Chris’ motions. He didn’t feel real and he just wanted to get back into bed and pretend he never left the house for the day. Maybe he should have stayed home was a thought that was on a constant loop. Something was said before Chris was pulling Adrian out of the office and into their car, they were finally going back home.

By the time the two men were able to get back to the house and inside, Adrian was exhausted. His first thought was to go into Chris’ room and lie down and that’s exactly what he did. After a few moments of silence, the younger man heard the other shuffling into the room and sitting down on the bed next to him. The older didn’t talk and touch Adrian, not knowing how he would react, he just wanted to be there to support him.

“Thank you for bringing me home,” Adrian whispered hoarsely.

“You’re welcome,” Chris whispered back, trying not to break the peaceful atmosphere.

“I love you,” He said, snuggling further into the covers.

“I love you too Vig,” Was said back, you could hear the smile as it was.
