Chapter Text
It was a nice winter morning in Dreamland, the ground still covered in a shimmering layer of frost, just waiting for the morning sun to reach down and thaw it up. It would still be a little while until the sun’s warmth could actually warm up the frozen ground though, as it was just now starting to peek over the horizon, dusting the dark sky with the first shades of color. A handful of puffy clouds dotted the scenery, looking like soft cotton candy with the way dawn illuminated them.
Galacta unfurled his wings, enjoying the slight breeze ruffling his feathers. Yet another nice day ahead – and knowing Dreamland, it wouldn’t be boring. The life had seemed mundane to him at first, but it was really growing on him now, with King DeDeDe and Kirby around times were hardly dull here.
Starting up a slight jog along the castle wall, he let his gaze travel down into a specific, slightly secluded corner of the courtyard below, immediately catching the speck of dark blue moving about in the shadows. Meta Knight was busy doing his morning training, it really was a shame Galacta couldn’t join him today. But for ocne, he had a strict timetable to keep.
The pink knight sped up his pace, simultaneously lifting his wings over his head, right before jumping over the balustrade. For an exhilarating split second his feet fell into thin air, then he gave his lavender wings a powerful flap, immediately shooting up and away from the castle wall. A few Waddle Dees turned heads when he lifted off, and he couldn’t help but give them a little show – he angled his wings, pulled up his knees and gave another mighty flap, rolling over in a sommersault before steadying his balance again, a few loose plumes getting carried away by the wind.
Galacta gave the Dees that were watching a little wave – they seemed all too excited about the display. Then he turned his attention over to the sleepy town downhill. On a usual morning, he would go for a little fly over Dreamland before dropping into the town, helping Melman with the mail deliveries – the Cappy was getting up there in age, and he appreciated Galacta’s help, especially when it was about some heavier packages. Gala himself had a lot of fun flying around town in the early morning, and he even got a small paycheck from Melman whenever the other could afford to. It saved Galacta from having to work for DeDeDe, while still being able to somewhat contribute to the household money the knights shared. There was no need to buy food or clothes – they got all that from DeDeDe - but ever since the pink knight had moved in with them, their already steep sugar expenses had gone through the roof.
He couldn’t help it, he just really had a terrible sweet tooth, just as bad as Meta’s. If not worse, even, considering his magic tended to drain his energy quicker than Kirby could down an ice cream tub.
Today, he steered off his routine path, veering over towards the little cliff where Kirby had her house. When he approached, he spotted the small bubblegum-pink whirlwind in front of the house, frantically waving. “Hey, you actually managed to get up on time!” Galacta yelled as he got close enough, spreading his wings to prepare for landing. “Incredible!”
Kirby’s sparkling smile briefly turned into a pout, tiny brows causing an adorable crease over her nose. “I can get up early if I have to!” She asserted with utmost sincerity. As if her own body was trying to prove her wrong, she broke into a yawn not even 5 seconds later. Chuckling, Gala ruffled her hair. “I know you can if you have to, Kirbs” he snickered, watching her turn red from embarrassment over the blunder. “Now hop on, we’ve got mail to deliver!”
That cheered the star child up again, and she eagerly ran around Gala to jump onto his back. With her added weight it took the pink knight a lot more force to get off the ground, but they were back on track for Cappy Town in no time.
When they reached the post office, the sun was just starting to reach the top of the houses, painting them a pretty orange. Melman was already bustling around inside, currently trying to carry a big box full of colorful letters over to the sorting counter. Kirby instantly rushed over to help him, grabbing the heavy box with one arm and snatching up a second with the other. “Oh, thank you Kirby! Good morning you two,” Melman smiled, rubbing his strained wrists as he turned to look at Galacta. “You brought help today, I see. I am guessing the amount of love letters we have here is your doing then?” A mischievous smile spread over Galacta’s face at that, but he didn’t get to answer, as Kirby immediately burst out, “Yes! We got everyone to write nice letters to each other for Valentine’s!!” The old Cappy let out a hearty chuckle at that, watching as the little girl energetically dumped the boxes onto the counter, eagerly starting to sort through them. “Kirby, we don’t sort the letters by color” Melman scolded softly, walking over to stop the tiny ball of energy from her self-imposed task. “Let me do the sorting, you just bring the next box over, alright?”
While Kirby zoomed to the back room, Galacta joined Melmat at the counter, helping to sort through the absolute abundance of mail on the table. All of the envelopes were colorful, some even had little decorations drawn on them, mostly hearts. “It’s nice to see so many love letters on Valentine’s, we haven’t had this many in years. How did you two manage that?” “Oh, I can’t take any credit for it,” Galacta chuckled, putting a letter addressed to Hana aside with the other out-of-town deliveries. It ended up right next to a letter to Len – they had written each other a letter? How cute. “It was all Kirby and the other kids,” he continued, “They ran all over town yesterday, talking their parents and other adults into writing their loved ones or friends a nice letter. I just gave them a bunch of stamps to sell and agreed to help delivering them on time.”
In that moment, Kirby came bursting into the room again, balancing three delivery bags on top of a third letter box. “I wrote all of the Cappies!” she bubbled cheerfully, setting aside the box to start filling up the cross-body bags. Yeah, Gala remembered that all too well, his wrist was still a bit sore. He had been the one helping her write all of them – Kirby couldn’t write very well, but she had drawn a little picture on each card. Of course, he had also been the one paying for her stamps, since the little girl was chronically broke, but he didn’t mind at all. It was for a good cause, and he had used the opportunity to sneakily write a card for both Kirby and Meta as well.
“You wrote to everyone, even King DeDeDe?” Melman asked, slightly bemused, hoisting up the last box and dumping the contents on the counter. Kirby nodded eagerly. “Yes, and Escargoon too! And Wadde Doo! But the Dees all get one card, because I don’t know how many there are and I didn’t want anyone to be left out…”
Galacta snorted at that, recalling the bout of panic that had hit him yesterday when Kirby had brought up the glorious idea of writing a letter to every single Waddle Dee at the castle. Thankfully he had been able to convince her that it would definitely be sufficient to write a generalized letter to the entire castle staff. Kirby had relented, but only under the condition that she would be allowed to write a longer letter and decorate it even more than the other cards. She had even drawn some extra pictures of the Dees and stuffed them into the envelope along with the actual card.
“I can imagine that was a lot of work,” Melman hummed, giving Galacta a knowing look, his smile ruffling the old Cappy’s moutache upwards on the sides. Gala just winked at the old man, handing Kirby the out-of-town stack to put into a bag. “Be prepared for more kids showing up later today, they all wanted to help with the letters. But obviously most of them weren’t willing to get up before sunrise for it,” the pink knight stated, grabbing the delivery bag that Kirby held out to him. “We’ll go take care of the first batches, you just keep prepping the bags!” Melman nodded, his gentle smile deepening all the wrinkles on his face, giving them a wave as the two star warriors walked out of the post office.
Slowly, the town seemed to be waking up – Kawasaki was bustling around the entrance to his restaurant, while Chief Bookham set his rocking chair onto the porch in front of the station. Tuggle was opening shop as well, putting up this week’s new advertisements in the windows.
“Operation Cupid Service is a go!” Kirby cheered, almost yelling, startling the poor Chief who had just started to nap off in his chair. Grinning, Gala gave his little helper a high five before spreading his wings, preparing for lift off. “See you later at the celebrations!” Kirby saluted as Galacta shot off the plaza, her own smile radiating enough energy and brightness to rival even the glow of the rising sun.

Chapter 2: DeDeDelivery (DeDeDe POV)
Summary:
DeDeDe gets a special delivery!
POV: King DeDeDe
Chapter Text
„This day sucks!“ DeDeDe yelled at nothing in particular, slouched over on his throne. “Why’s there gotta be a day about loving other people! They should all just love me instead!” Even Escargoon wasn’t here today to listen to his angry rambling, leaving the king to feel awfully lonely. Not that he’d ever admit that to anyone, least of all to himself. “Ugh, I outta cancel this stupid holiday…!”
What was the deal with love letters anyways? He’d never gotten one himself, so he didn’t really get it. It’s just a stupid letter, like any of the others that he never opened, mostly because they were bills. He still had an entire stack of the eNeMeE bills somewhere in his storage, forever to be left unpaid.
Hah, he had really showed that stupid Customer Service guy! He had gotten so many monsters for free, because they blew up their base before he could even pay his credit!
…
Too bad that he now had pretty much nothing to do anymore. He let out another frustrated yell towards the ceiling, when he was abruptly interrupted by the throne room’s double doors being thrown open with a loud thud. His voice choked in the back of his throat when he saw who was standing in the open doorway – it was none other than that blasted feathered menace who liked pointing weapons at him.
DeDeDe flinched as Galacta Knight wordlessly strode across the carpet towards him – with any other person, the king would demand them to stop and bow at the foot of the throne, but he was alone right now and even if he couldn’t see that stupid sharp lance anywhere, he was well aware that the knight could just summon a weapon out of thin air if he so pleased. Or maybe he had one in that bag he was rustling through right now-
The magenta monster came to a stop right in from of the throne, making DeDeDe wish he could fuse together with the backrest. “Wh-what is the meaning of this intrusion-“ he started, cursing his voice for stuttering like that. He sounded so whimpy! He was the king of Dreamland, and even if this flying pest could decimate him in a blink, he still didn’t have any right to be so rude, walking in like he owned the place! Sadly, without Meta Knight around he didn’t have any leverage against him, but he’d pay him back for this-
The king’s thoughts came to a skidding halt, as Galacta Knight pulled a few envelopes from his bag, holding them right under DeDeDe’s nose. “Mail delivery for you,” he stated blankly, but there was a mischievous spark in his pink eyes as he fixated them on the king. Quite obviously, he was aware of the impact he had on the other, and he was enjoying every second of it.
Blasted pest. Just you wait, I’ll just order Meta Knight to duel you later!
Not that that had ever worked out because those two sparred a lot anyways and would just blow up half of the castle when they got serious. Still, he’d do it, even if it was just to spite the pink knight. It had worked with the smaller pink pest too!
…DeDeDe was really starting to hate the color pink. Begrudgingly, he took the envelopes from the horned man, noticing with a sour expression that half of those were pink, too. They were all addressed to him – he could read his own name at least – but he couldn’t see a sender anywhere on them. “Oi, who’s all this junk from?!” he yelled after Galacta, who was already halfway across the room again, apparently in a bit of a hurry. The pink man stopped and looked over his shoulder, the look on his face surprisingly somber. “Valentine’s cards can be sent anonymously, your majesty.” Somehow, the pink knight had a way of making the title sound like an insult. How anyone could put so much venom into two small words like that was beyond even DeDeDe. “And before you call them junk, I suggest you read them. It seems there are a surprising amount of people here who actually like your presence. You’re also invited to the celebration at the town plaza tonight, but I’d recommend behaving yourself if you want to join.”
With that incredulous statement, the knight left the throne room, double doors falling shut with a loud bang behind him.
DeDeDe stared at the colorful paper in his gloved hands. Valentine’s cards? Someone had… actually written him messages today? A sickly sweet feeling bloomed in his chest – he wouldn’t be getting sappy now, would he? No, that wasn’t for him. But still…
He studied the letters closer, noticing that one of them was definitely adorned with Escargoon’s handwriting, something he could recognize at first glance. Another one also seemed oddly familiar – he had seen this precise lettering before, but he couldn’t quite recall where. Maybe it was Meta Knight’s? Yeah, that’s right, it was the way the knight would write on those blueprint drawings of his. A third letter was covered in a scrawly handwriting, making his own name almost unrecognizable. That was probably Waddle Doo - DeDeDe didn’t see the captain’s notes often, but the sheer messiness of the lines was pretty unique. Though it seemed Waddle Doo had actually put some effort into making the scrawl at least halfway readable this time.
The writing on the remaining three letters weren’t familiar to him, but one of them had what looked like a hammer drawn with crayons on it. It was one of the pink envelopes. Kirby.
His face felt unusually warm, and he wasn’t sure whether he liked or hated the happiness that was bubbling up inside of him right now. There were people who thought about him on a day like this, without him having to threaten them into including him? And he was invited to the town celebration, too? Usually nobody invited him to anything, mostly because they just expected him to show up anyways.
Okay, maybe he would reconsider cancelling Valentine’s Day, at least for now! He hopped off his throne. “Escargoooon!!” He yelled at the top of his lungs as he went to open the heavy double doors again. “I need you to read something for me!”
Chapter 3: A Well-Deserved Break (Kirby POV)
Summary:
Kirby finished all the deliveries and goes to give her best friend her card!
POV: Kirby
Chapter Text
“I’m back! All the in-town letters are delivered!” Kirby bubbled happily, waltzing into the post office right around noon. At least that’s what her stomach told her the time was. It had taken quite a while to get all the letters out to the right people, and sometimes she had forgotten someone and had to double back around to get everything where it was meant to be.
She was greeted by Tiff and Melman, who were busy cleaning up the empty letter boxes. The other girl had stayed in the office to help Melman sort everything out while Kirby, Galacta, Tuff, Iro and Honey had run around Cappy Town as delivery service. It had been so much fun – every Cappy had gotten at least one letter, and they were all so happy about it! The thought of the entirety of Dreamland being cheerful today made Kirby incredibly giddy.
When Mable had received her cards – a very sweet poem had been written on one of them, the fortune teller had even read it out loud for Kirby – she had immediately run off to look for Samo. How she knew who had written the letter was a mystery to Kirby, though Tuff said that it was obvious… Samo had gotten a kiss from Mable then, and the two had gone on to walk down to the plaza, hand in hand, blushes on their cheeks and smiles all around.
Curio had received two letters, one of them Kirby’s, which he had been very happy about. But when he had opened the other one, his face turned the shade of red Kirby knew from the inside of a watermelon, and the old Cappy immediately asked her who had sent it. Sadly, since there wasn’t a sender on the card, she couldn’t help with that. Seemed that Curio had a secret admirer! Kirby would really love to know whom it was, maybe she could set them up for a date sometime!
When she had gone to deliver the cards for Mrs Bookham, the chief had stopped her at the door, sheepishly handing her and Tuff a bouquet of roses and instructing them to please deliver the flowers along with the card he had written. The elderly lady had been so delighted, and there had been more kisses, and a cherry red chief!
All in all, everyone was being so nice to each other – this was the best idea they’ve ever had!
“We’re all done here too!” Tiff smiled, handing Melman the last box. “Galacta Knight just went to deliver the last batch of letters up to the castle as his last run,” she added, before Kirby could even open her mouth to ask. Every single time Kirby had come back to the office to refill her bag she had asked about the pink knight, but he hadn’t been there, always busy delivering stuff somewhere on the outskirts of Dreamland. Kirby was a little disappointed, dejectedly setting her now empty delivery bag aside. She had hoped to spend just a little more time with the knight today. They hadn’t done a lot together lately, because both Galacta and Meta had always been busy with something.
“I didn’t do anything wrong, did I?” she burst out loud when sitting down on the counter, making Tiff turn to her in surprise. “What do you mean?” the older girl asked, puzzled. “Well both Galacta and Meta Knight haven’t spent any time with me lately when I asked them, they’re always busy… are they avoiding me? Did I do something wrong?” Her voice actually went up a pitch at the end, tears starting to prick at her eyes. Tiff came over to sit next to her, putting an arm around her shoulders. “I don’t think you did, Kirby,” she smiled gently, tone reassuring. “I haven’t be able to catch either of them lately either. They’re just busy. Also, Galacta said we’d meet them both at the celebration tonight, so you can see them then!”
That lifted Kirby’s spirits immensely. She hadn’t actually expected Meta Knight to come, since the blue knight was usually one to avoid social gatherings like DeDeDe avoided bills. Especially when it was mostly about dancing – which tonight was! Mayor Blustergas had made arrangements to host a Valentine’s dance at the plaza during sunset, and while the kids’ Cupid Delivery Service had been busy bringing people Valentine’s cards, the adult Cappies were preparing decorations for the evening.
A lot of them were readying pretty clothing too! Kirby had actually gone shopping with Tiff and her family a few days ago to get something nice to wear as well, she couldn’t wait to finally put it on tonight! She didn’t have someone specific to dance with tonight, but neither had Tiff, so they would just be going together. After all this dance wasn’t just for couples, but also for family and friends! Everyone got to be happy!
Oh, right, about that-
“I almost forgot to give you your card!” Kirby burst out, pulling the card she had saved for her best friend from her pocket where she had kept it safe. It was pink and green, which were Tiff’s favourite colors, and Kirby had carefully drawn some books on the outside of the envelope. The other girl’s face lit up as she took the card from Kirby, studying the little drawings on it before opening the card and reading through it. On the card was a little thank you for being the bestest of friends, along with a quote from Tiff and Kirby’s favourite book! The blonde girl gave Kirby a big hug, which Kirby happily returned. “Thank you so much, this is so sweet of you!”
In that moment, Melman resurfaced from the back room. “We’re all done here,” he smiled, “I got all the delivery bags stashed away except for Galacta’s, but he has the keys anyways, so that’s okay. Let’s go get some lunch – you two must be starving!” Kirby jumped to her feet in the blink of an eye, her stomach starting to rumble at the sole mention of food. Looking at her excited expression, Melman startend laughing. “That’s what I like to see! Come on, I’ll treat you two to lunch for all your help today. Let’s see what edibles are on Kawasaki’s menu today,” the old man chuckled. Tiff thanked him politely, and the three made their way out of the post office together.
The plaza was already starting to look real festive, with lanterns and garlands decorating the big tree and all houses around. Some of the Cappies were putting little paper hearts on the branches of the big tree, some of them signed with couple’s initials. Slowly but surely, the plaza turned into a festive wonderland, and it would certainly be even prettier at the dance when the sun went down and the lanterns would be lit.
Tonight would be awesome!
Chapter 4: A Knight's Worries (Meta Knight POV)
Summary:
Meta Knight has too many things to think about.
POV: Meta Knight
Chapter Text
Tonight was going to be horrible.
Meta Knight was leaning against a wall on the balcony just outside the throne room, his unfocused gaze resting somewhere on the hills beyond Cappy Town. A few minutes earlier, Galacta had burst out of the throne room somewhat akin to a meteorite, followed by DeDeDe only a short while after. The pink knight had zoomed off into the sky, headed for the horizon, magic causing him to glow like a shooting star as he used it to propel himself faster through the air. Meta wasn’t quite sure where he was going exactly, but his course had been somewhat in line with where Kit Cosmos’ island was. Someone maybe had written the old soldier a card, too. Kirby definitely would’ve.
King DeDeDe meanwhile had left down the hallway, yelling for Escargoon to come read the Valentine’s cards for him. So he still couldn’t read… Meta Knight sighed silently, hoping the card he had written to the king wouldn’t come back to bite him. He had figured he’d just write him a polite little letter, more to keep him included in today’s events than anything. DeDeDe could get insufferable when he wasn’t included in something after all, so the blue knight was merely practicing damage prevention here.
Alright, maybe it wasn’t just out of pity. DeDeDe had gotten a lot more tolerable lately, apart from his constant bickers with Galacta – apparently the pink knight had taken to “number one annoyance” in the king’s perspective, as even Kirby was less of a target for the man lately. But due to Galacta’s obvious superiority in any sort of physical or verbal fight, those arguments were usually nothing more than annoying at most. Rather tame, really.
Well, sooner or later DeDeDe would probably find something new to annoy everyone with, but until then, Meta was quite happy with the situation. The other had even shown good faith by correcting Kirby on her stance in her hammer ability – and for some reason, after that one time, DeDeDe had just happened to walk by her whenever she was training. Maybe the old grouch was actually growing to like the bubblegum pink child, even if he definitely wouldn’t admit it.
“You’re one to talk.”
Galaxia’s voice had an unusual snippy ring to it when it spoke up out of nowhere. Meta Knight chose to ignore the sword’s input on the matter, instead returning to the thought that was plaguing him for two weeks now. The dance. He actually did have suitable clothing for such an occasion, yet he still wasn’t sure he really wanted to go. It wasn’t that he couldn’t dance, either – dancing wasn’t much harder than swordfight to him. Not to mention that he and Galacta had actually been practicing lately, mostly because the pink knight suggested it might help with his indecisiveness about the matter. Gala really just wanted him to go.
Truth to be told, Meta Knight didn’t actually know what he was nervous about in the first place. He had an outfit, the skills, a dance partner even, but he rarely ever participated in social events with the Cappies. They liked him just fine – Galacta had handed him something you could only describe as a tower of cards earlier, which was admittedly rather sweet – but something about imagining himself in a crowd of happy townsfolk seemed utterly alien to him.
“You’re just shy.”
Galaxia spoke up again, sounding rather amused, reiterating exactly what Galacta had told him again and again over the past few days. Again choosing not to answer his nosy sword, he instead pushed himself off the castle wall to go see where DeDeDe was running off to. You never knew, maybe he would start a plot to ruin the festivities – and while Meta still was undecided about participating himself, he surely wouldn’t let the king ruin the fun for everyone else.
Maybe he’d even find some time to read through the cards again – a lot of them were from the kids, and some read almost like fanmail, but Galacta and Kirby had both written him very sweet messages. He’d have to remember to put them up on his pinboard later. Couldn’t hurt to have some positive reminders up, right?
Smiling to himself a little, he slipped into one of the hidden tunnels next to the balcony, heading roughly for the direction of Escargoon’s rooms.
Chapter 5: A Lovely Announcement (Waddle Doo POV)
Summary:
Waddle Doo reads the Waddle Dees the card that Kirby sent them.
POV: Waddle Doo
Notes:
Chapter 5 & 6 are uploaded simultaneously because they're so short!
Chapter Text
„Attention everyone!“ Waddle Doo called out, standing on his small pedestal in the guards’ dining hall. Sometimes he really loathed his short height – his job would be so much easier if he were tall like most of the other Dreamlandian species. Oh well, at least he had the pedestal.
The Waddle Dees that were currently eating their lunch turned to look at him curiously, at least most of them. “I have a letter that I need to read to you guys – I know not everyone’s here at the moment, so please tell your colleagues about this when you see them. I’ll also put up the letter on the board, feel free to read it again if you want to,” Waddle Doo instructed, using his free hand to sign out the words he was speaking for the Dees in the back. His other hand was clutching a pastel pink piece of paper, which was covered in stickers and little drawings of what he presumed were supposed to be the Dees. Even if Kirby hadn’t signed the card, it would’ve been obvious whom the letter was from.
The noises of cutlery on plates died down, food temporarily forgotten, with everyone’s undivided attention now on the captain. The Dees didn’t usually get personal letters or anything even remotely close to this, so they seemed rather excited. He cleared his throat, looking at the paper, while still using his other hand to sign. “This letter is for all the Dees working at castle DeDeDe,” he began, trying to keep his tone neutral. It didn’t help that he could mentally hear Kirby bubbling these words in her cheerful tone. “I want to tell you all that you are awesome and you work so hard! You protect the castle and my friends who live there, and you make sure all the chores get done, and you make amazing food in the kitchen. Thank you so much for everything you do, you are the best! Happy Valentine’s Day, Kirby. PS: I’m sorry I couldn’t write you guys individual letters but I don’t know how many of you work at the castle, so please don’t be sad!”
When he looked back up, the Dees stared at him, eyes sparkling. It was a really nice message for them, even if it came from whom was pretty much DeDeDe’s archenemy. “There’s also a bunch of drawings for you guys attached to this,” Waddle Doo continued, holding up a handful of colorful papers that had been included in the envelope. “They’ll be on the board as well, check them out when you have time. That’s all.”
He hopped off the pedestal as the Waddle Dees clapped their hands together happily, making his way over to their big pinboard, adding the card and the artworks to a free spot at the side. The colorful drawings felt oddly out of place next to the timetables and work-related announcements, though at the same time it looked rather nice to have something this bright and friendly there. A few of the Dees already started shuffling over to the board to take a look, so Waddle Doo slipped away before he could get caught in the crowd.
Kirby had actually written him a cute card too, telling him how much she admired his work, which was really nice. It wasn’t easy juggling an entire colony of Waddle Dees, especially not with DeDeDe’s shenanigans having him run all over the place. Not that he was complaining, he was perfectly fine with things as they were, but the compliment still made him fluster a little.
Though, it didn’t make him fluster quite as badly as the thought of that anonymous card he had sent out himself. He had written one to DeDeDe too, but there was another one that he had thrown into the post box in town. He just prayed to the stars that the person receiving the letter wouldn’t be able to recognize who had sent it, or he might just turn around and jump off the cliff behind the castle.
Waddle Doo turned to stare out of the window to keep his heated face away out of sight from the Dees. At least tonight would be a quiet evening – surprisingly, the king hadn’t ordered anything regarding the celebrations in town later, so he just assumed there wouldn’t be trouble. At least he hoped so. He really wanted to drop by the library tonight and read a little, something that the captain sadly rarely had time to do.
Chapter 6: Mailman Bootcamp (Galacta Knight POV)
Summary:
Delivering a letter to an ex-drill sergeant isn't exactly an easy task.
POV: Galacta Knight
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Galacta ducked under an arrow that came flying at him from the bushes, using flicks of magic to deflect two more. “Hey Kit, I got you a letter-“ he started, when suddenly an entire tree came barreling at him from above, attached to the surrounding branches in a complicated rope system. Blasted stars-
He really should’ve brought his lance, or at the very least his shield. Magic energy flying to the palm of his hand, he summoned a crackling light blade before him, slicing the wooden trap in two clean halves, edges sizzling and smoking from the heat. The tree’s remains fell down to either side of him, while he still stood in the same place, unharmed, making no move to get out of the clearing he was in.
“You form is terrible!” came a yell from one of the bushes. Oh, really? Gala summoned a weak sword projectile, nothing more than a harmless but painful little gimmick, shooting it in the general direction of where the voice had come from. There was a surprised yelp, then the former sergeant dropped from the branch he had been standing on like a sack of potatoes. “Said the one who just gave away his position to yell at me,” Galacta snorted, studying the man in front of him. “And that was not exactly a prime landing, either.”
Kit jumped to his feet at that, eyes blazing with irritation. “Some of us actually age up, you feathered menace!” he barked, rubbing the arm he had fallen on. “And watch it with that blasted magic of yours, it almost singed my moustache!” “Good riddance I’d say,” Galacta frowned, looking at the untamed jungle that was growing in Kit’s face. “And you’re the one who threw an entire tree at me, first.” “Not like that would kill you,” the older man argued back, putting his hands on his hips in his signature stance. “I simply wanted to test your reflexes!”
“Well, newsflash, but I’m not here for bootcamp. I just want to deliver a letter.” Sighing, Galacta handed Kit the green envelope – Kirby had drawn on it to make it look like a camouflage pattern. Kit was one of the very few people who could actually match galacta’s own energy in arguing, and usually the pink knight would love nothing more than to go on and on and see how far the older man could be pushed. But today sadly wasn’t the time for that, as Galacta still ahd to get back and take a shower before the dance.
The sergeant snatched the letter from him, looking at the writing. “From Kirby?” he asked tersely. “Oh, so you can read?” Galacta jabbed, not able to stop a smirk from crossing his face, which he knew irritated the other to no end. Kit had seen that particular expression often enough back at the GSA, when he had been unfortunate enough to be the drill sergeant for Galacta’s squad.
Safe to say the other really hated lightning strikes now, especially intentional ones.
As Kit took a breath to undoubtedly start up another yelling match, Galacta raised a hand, interrupting him. “I’d love to bicker some more, but I have a party to attend tonight, so I better get going. Happy Valentine’s you old grouch.” With that, Galacta unfurled his wings again, an obvious sign that he wanted to cut the conversation short. Kit huffed. “Fine then. Tell the crew I said hi, and deliver Kirby my thanks, mailman.”
Snickering at the jab, Galacta gave a mock salute before taking off the ground, quickly gaining distance to the army veteran, who was genuinely saluting him as a goodbye.

Chapter Text
„Isn’t this a lovely evening?“ Lady Memu smiled, arm locked with her husband‘s as they went to sit down on a bench together. The couple had just returned from dancing, now taking a little rest at the side where their kids and Kirby were sitting, playing a card game together. The kids had been dancing earlier too, with Kirby and Tuff trying to see who could breakdance better, not caring that the music didn’t really fit that style of dance. Tiff had shown Kirby how to dance with a partner too, which had been really fun, albeit a little complicated!
Everyone wore such pretty outfits too – Kirby herself had put on a nice short-sleeved shirt with a cute bow, suspenders with star-shaped buttons and matching red shoes. Tiff had even given her a pretty red bow to put in her hair! The older girl herself was donning a soft pink dress with a white belt around the waist, which made her look really mature. Tuff was wearing suspenders just like Kirby, though he had taken off one of them like usual, much to his parents’ displeasure. At least nobody thought to berate him on it today, everyone’s mood was way too nice to ruin it with something small like that.
And yet Kirby’s own mood was dulled a little, as she had seen neither Galacta nor Meta Knight so far, and the sun was already close to disappearing behind the horizon. The party would continue even after sunset, but the music was starting to go from slower songs to something a little peppier, and the Cappies were just dancing however they felt like, barely anyone still doing traditional dances. In a nutshell: it was late.
“Do you think-“ Kirby started for the umpteenth time tonight, only to immediately get interrupted by Tuff mid-sentence. “Yes we still think they’re gonna show up Kirby,” the little boy rolled his eyes, throwing down a 7 on the pile of cards between them. “You gotta draw 2, sis!” Tiff muttered something that probably shouldn’t be said out loud under her breath, begrudgingly doing as told. “Galacta Knight said they’ll be here, so I’m sure he’ll show up,” Tuff continued, looking at Kirby again. “He’s a knight after all and knights stick to their word, right?” Kirby nodded, but Tiff gave her brother a little smirk. “Look at that, do you have a new idol? Weren’t you bashing Galacta Knight for wearing high heels earlier this week? And you said something about pink being girly too if I recall correctly?” Tuff seemed to shrink under the accusations, lips pressed together in a thin line. “Well yeah but he’s really strong just like Meta Knight and that’s cool…” he muttered, the words almost getting swallowed up by the music. The kids’ parents just chuckled at that, having listened in on the entire conversation.
“Look at that, speak of the devil,” Sir Ebrum perked up in that moment. “Seems like at least one of them showed up!” Kirby jumped to her feet, dropping her cards, trying to follow Ebrum’s gaze. “Where?!” she squeaked, jumping up and down in an attempt to look over the crowd. When that tactic yielded pretty much no result, she resorted to hopping onto the bench next to Lady Memu in an attempt to get a better look. “Over there, he’s hard to miss,” the woman chuckled lightly, pointing across the plaza towards Kawasaki’s restaurant.
Sure enough, Kirby could spot Galacta over there, leaning at the side of the building, golden horns shining prettily in the glow of the lanterns. He was wearing a frilled, light pink shirt with a Boloro tie that bore the sigil of his 4-pointed star on it, a dark, gold-rimmed vest and white pants, topped off with shoes that matched the vest. He looked so beautiful!
But Meta Knight was nowhere to be seen, and Galacta was sort of standing outside of the crowd, almost in the shadows of the small side alley that ran from the plaza behind the restaurant. Why was he just standing there? Didn’t he want to dance? He seemed to be… waiting for something.
Kirby hopped off the bench, having decided that she would go over there and talk to Galacta. She still had to give him the gift she had bought for him, too. She had one for Meta as well, but since the blue knight didn’t seem to be around she’d have to give it to him later…

Chapter Text
Galacta watched the Cappies merrily dance along under the tree, the music just now starting to kick up to something one could actually dance to. Sure, partner dances were nice and all, but they were mostly just incredibly boring, the traditional music just not really being able to make his heart thrum the right way to dance to it.
Due to this, he wasn’t even disgruntled by the fact that his dance partner had apparently gotten a bought of stage fright or something, still not having shown up in town. He had briefly seen Meta at the castle earlier, with the blue haired man mumbling something about not trusting DeDeDe to actually be good today, although the king hadn’t shown any signs of malice the entire evening. In fact, he was just a few steps away from Galacta right now, munching down on some of the sugarcookies he had gotten from Kawasaki – Galacta himself hadn’t been quite brave enough to try those himself yet, but if DeDeDe ate them they couldn’t be half bad? The king surely wasn’t the type to pretend he liked something just to be polite.
To cut the other some slack, it wasn’t like Galacta was much better in that regard himself.
Suddenly, there was a tug on his sleeve, making him bolt off the wall, the feathers on his wings jolting every which way as he turned to face- “Kirby?” Galacta burst out, looking for all the world like a feathered pufferfish with the way his wings were poofed up. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to sneak up on you!” the little girl squeaked, half-yelling to be heard over the music. She looked adorable in her new getup – her facial expression however was a little unusual. She seemed a bit put off, almost worried. Galacta decidedly did not like that look.
“Don’t worry, it’s my fault for being distracted,” he reassured her, shaking his wings a little to get the feathers back down. “Are you okay? Was there a problem with the deliveries earlier?” Instead of giving an answer, Kirby just suddenly started inspecting her shoes, squirming around, her hands balled to little fists. Galacta watched the display for a moment, frowning, before lowering himself into a crouch to be on her eyelevel, making Kirby jump. “Hey Kirbs, what’s up? You look awfully unhappy.”
The little girl’s mouth was a thin line, wide blue eyes looking almost panicked, like a deer caught in headlights. “I’m… I wasn’t sure you were gonna come here…” she burst out, voice stammering a little. “And we didn’tspendmuch timelatelyandIwas-ImeanIwaswondering-“ Galacta interrupted the sudden waterfall by snipping her against the nose, earning a little surprised squeak. “Breathe, Kirby. You’re barfing words again,” he chuckled, though it was a little forced, considering he was now even more concerned about the little girl’s mood.
Kirby paused, startled, looked down at her hands, which were still tightly balled into fists, then she abruptly shoved one of her palms into Galacta’s face, revealing little golden hairpin. It was adorned with a small heart at the tip, shimmering prettily in the light of the lanterns. “I got you a Valentine’s gift!” she declared with determination, her eyes still big like she was scared of his reaction. A pang of fondness came over Galacta as he gently took the offered piece of jewelry. “Thank you,” he said quietly, not quite sure how to react. He hadn’t expected a gift like this, and Kirby was still acting off… he’d really have to do something about that.
“Can I put it in your hair?” the little girl asked sheepishly, pointing at the hairpin. Galacta nodded and handed it back to her, the little hands carefully placing the hairpin next to his ponytail - there really wasn’t enough space for hairclips in the front due to his horns. When she was done she attempted to step back, but Galacta caught her in his arms before she could move, wrapping his wings around them almost like a tent as he did so, and Kirby let out yet another squeal. “And now you’re gonna tell me why you’re walking on eggshells around me like that,” he hummed, holding the little girl close to his chest. The lavender feathers of his wings blocked out most of the light from outside, the shade underlining the glow from Kirby’s big eyes – there were so many shades of blue in them, dotted with countless little specks of white and yellow, almost like stars.
There was a moment of silent staring, then Kirby smacked face-first into him, hugging him tightly, and almost causing him to fall over backwards – he was still crouching, and this wasn’t exactly the most stable position. “You were so busy lately and then today you were never at the post office when I came around I thought you wereavoidingme!” The words kind of slurred together at the end, but Gala was still able to make them out just fine – and the guilt stabbed him just fine too. Had they really been that busy lately? He had been spending a lot of time with Meta, and they had done their best to keep everyone’s noses out of their business. The blue knight wouldn’t have been the biggest fan of people knowing that they were practicing dancing out of all things.
“Ahw, no Kirbs! Don’t worry, it’s not like that,” Galacta hurriedly reassured the little bundle of starshine in his arms, giving her a little peck on the forehead. “You didn’t do anything wrong, we were really just busy – please tell me earlier next time if you think that!” Kirby mumbled something into his chest that got swallowed up completely by the music, but it sounded happy. A moment later, Kirby abruptly let go, and Galacta raised his wings so she could get out. “We match now!” she smiled up at him, pointing at her own head. “We’re both cupid!” Her mood seemed to have done a complete 180 – mildly concerning, but apparently just the usual for her.
Sure enough, Kirby was donning golden heart-shaped hairpin in her own hair, albeit it sat a little askew. Without really thinking, Galacta bent down to readjust it, a smile tugging on the corners of his mouth. “You’re right, we even have the matching wings,” he hummed, gently patting his left wing against Kirby’s shoulder, right next to where her own tiny feathered wings were. The only difference aside from the size was that hers were more a soft shade of pink, and not lavender like Galacta’s.
Her tiny wings fluttered happily at that, face now lit up with a bright smile, eyes sparkling. “Yes!” Then she paused for a moment, looking over to the crowd, then back to Galacta. “Is Meta Knight not coming?” she asked, brows furrowing in a tiny frown. “Oh, he’s just running late. I think. Want me to come get you when I see him?” Kirby nodded energetically, almost bouncing up at down on the spot, her former joyfulness returning.
In that moment, Tuff appeared from the crowd, a full bag of sugarcookies in hand. “There you are Kirby! You want some cookies? Kawasaki is giving them out for free to kids!” Galacta hadn’t though it possible for Kirby to get even more excited, but now she actually did a little jump from happiness, darting after Tuff, barely managing to say goodbye before the crowd swallowed her back up.
Such a happy little whirlwind.

Chapter Text
From above, the plaza of Cappy Town looked almost like a miniature galaxy, full of little sparkling lights. Meta Knight angled himself slightly around it to make sure he wouldn’t be seen by any of the townsfolk as he crossed. Wings beating silently, he lowered himself down in an alley behind Kawasaki’s restaurant, adjusting the collar of his shirt. Instead of a tie he had opted for a simple black band with a metallic latch, embellished with his signature emblem. It wouldn’t get in the way as much as an ordinary tie, and it was a little less stiff too.
The evening breeze gently tickled the rim of his wing membranes, making him shudder a little. Usually he would immediately turn his wings back into their cape form whenever he was on the ground, but today he hesitated – they looked quite nice with the purple vest, and it was comfortable to have them out sometimes. On the other hand, he knew how much the Cappies always stared at them... Sighing dejectedly, he gave the limbs a mental tug, and a blink later he could feel the compforting soft fabric of his cape brushing against his back. It was bad enough already that he had left his mask at the castle, making him feel ridiculously vulnerable today – Galaxia was safely attached to his belt, which gave him some reassurance, but it was still an alien feeling for him to run around so… exposed. He shook his head, trying to shake off the nagging feeling, it was no use to think about it now anyways, there was no turning back at this point.
Now he’d just have to find Galacta.
But as he turned the corner, he paused. So much for searching. The pink warrior was right in front of him with his back turned, waving to Kirby, who was just now disappearing in the crowd with a bright smile on her face. The blue knight took a moment to stare at the other’s winged back - he was wearing that pink ruffled shirt he liked so much, though today he had actually put a gold-rimmed vest over it to make it a bit fancier. After admiring his husband a bit longer, he decided to make himself noticed, as Galacta seemed blissfully unaware of his presence, looking around the crowd contently.
“You look gorgeous,” the blue knight commented softly, causing Galacta to let out a yelp, feathers on his wings standing on end as he spun around. “Really, can people stop sneaking up on me to…day…“ the magenta warrior’s sentence trailed off at the end as he stared at Meta, face turning a light shade of pink, matching his hair. A little flutter went through his lavender wings, making the limbs fluff up yet again.
Shoving aside his inner introvert – who was admittedly screaming bloody murder right now - Meta stepped out of the shadow of the building, extending a hand towards the other. “You want to dance?” he asked, knowing full well that this was what Galacta had been giddily looking forward to ever since the event had been announced by the mayor two weeks ago. “Yes,” Galacta burst out, without even a moment’s hesitation, allowing Meta to grab his hand and pull him over to the dancefloor.
Adorable.
Galacta was usually Meta Knight’s exact opposite – loud and expressive, and if someone snooped in his personal life he’d just turn around and tell them more on purpose. But even the pink warrior had a soft side, and Meta Knight loved seeing him flustered, with the little wing flutter he always did as the red in his cheeks spread over to the tips of his pointy ears.
“You’re fluffing up,” Meta Knight chuckled, noting that the lilac feathers were still noticeably bigger in volume than usual. “Shut up hot man,” Galacta almost grumbled in response, shooting him a soft glare. Meta snorted at the nickname, doing his best to ignore the fact that some of the Cappies had noticed the two men’s appearance on the plaza, trying – and gloriously failing – to keep their staring discreet.
Apparently his nervosity wasn’t going quite as unnoticed as he had hoped, because Gala leaned over, an almost infectious smile on his face. “Music, Meta. Not people.” he hummed, elegantly turning towards him, hands still touching. A smirk crept up on the blue knight’s face as he studied Galacta’s posture – it resembled the pink warrior’s fighting stance, but just a touch lighter, more elegant in a way. Meta brought himself in a matching position, temporarily forgetting about the Cappies around them, focusing on the music’s flow and the man in front of him instead.
They gave each other a court nod, then they started moving, circling around their hands that were still touching at the fingertips, matching their steps to the beat of the music. It didn’t take long for them to get lost in the rhythm, the entire world falling from view, except for these bright pink eyes that focused Meta’s own amber ones with an intensity that could set fire to an iceberg.
They moved around each other in perfect sync, twirling, but never touching, much how when they fought. In a duel, the only thing between them would be the metal of their weapons, but now, that space was created by their own volition, skin barely grazing the other with every step they took.
At this point, there was ample space around them, the Cappies trying to give the two knights more room as they mixed dance moves with various stances of close combat, always missing the other by just an inch. Meta watched how Galacta elegantly moved his wings along to the dance – the pink warrior immediately caught his gaze, a devilish smirk appearing on his face as he suddenly gave a little flap, just enough to make the next dance step in midair before touching ground again. A challenge? You’re on.
With the next whirl backwards, evading one of Galacta’s kicks, Meta gave his cape a tug, wings unfurling. His partner’s eyes started to shine excitedly at that, a faint ripple going through his lavender feathers. The Cappies around them uttered a few surprised noises, but their faces were all but a blur as the two knights moved in on each other again, faster now, wings seamlessly joining their movements. Their steps transferred into the air more and more often, soft feathers grazing past silky membrane harmlessly, not knocking into the other, despite often coming so close their noses almost touched.
One of Galacta’s feet touched the earth for a second, just so the pink warrior could jump back up in an elegant side sommersault, using his wings to propel himself even higher up than what should be possible – Meta, who was still in midair, gracefully avoided the other’s legs with a twirl, allowing them to shoot narrowly past his head. As soon as Gala was upright again, Meta grabbed the other’s hand to pull him back up into the air, practically whirling him over his head in a dizzying spin, before both of them landed on the ground with an audible clack of their heels, fingers still intertwined and the tips of their noses brushing against each other – from this close, Meta could feel Galacta’s sped up breath on his skin, and a few pink strands were stuck to the other’s face with sweat.
Their eyes locked, sparkling pink stuck on glowing amber, and Gala moved the slightest bit closer, prompting Meta to lean in as well – but the moment was abruptly interrupted by a cheer, followed by many more, causing them both to jerk away from each other in surprise, though Galacta refused to release the iron grip he had on Meta’s hand. Some of the Cappies around them even started to applaud, the little bubble of space around the knights collapsing as their onlookers moved in to bombard them with a mixture of comments and questions. Apparently they had drawn a little more attention than anticipated, as Meta could even spot DeDeDe sheepishly applauding all the way in the back, though the king immediately stopped in his tracks when he noticed him looking.
This was decidedly too much attention for the blue knight’s taste, but unfortunately Gala’s hold of his hand was still somewhat akin to a jaw vice, so disappearing wasn’t an option. He tried to brush off the nagging feeling of discomfort that always overcame him in a crowd, attempting to mask it with his usual calm demeanor, but that proved to be a little difficult without his mask on.
Something brushed against the sensitive underside of Meta’s right wing, causing him to jump at the sensation – looking down, he was faced with none other than Kirby staring up at him with wide, sparkling eyes. “You were so cool!” the little girl squeaked, while Meta mentally ordered his wings to transform back into a cape so people would stop bumping into them. A second later, he could feel one of Galacta’s wings brushing around his shoulders, shielding him from the crowd behind them, and gently nudging him forwards.
Most times, Meta would mentally curse Galacta’s ability to read him like a book, but right now it was actually a good thing.
The pink warrior smoothly navigated through the crowd, happily chatting with some of the Cappies as he did so, but interest seemed to be dying down already as the townsfolk started to go back to their own dancing again. By the time they were off the dancefloor, the only people still with them were Hana and Kirby, and the Cappy lady was just now saying her goodbyes to go back to her husband. Before she left, she briefly turned to Meta Knight. “I’m really glad you decided to come by! It’s been a while since I’ve seen you at a festivity, you should join more often.” she smiled, having to raise her voice a little so it would carry over the music. “Thank you, I’ll keep it in mind.” the blue knight replied with a polite nod, and Hana happily scurried off into the crowd again.
“Dirty liar.” Galacta snickered next to him, a stupid grin on his face. He almost looked like a cheeky devil with the horns on his head and his fangs shimmering in the light of the lanterns. “I wasn’t lying,” Meta shot back, one eyebrow raised. “I just said I’d keep it in mind, not that I’d consider actually coming again.” “Ahw that’s a shame though!” Kirby suddenly spoke up, causing Meta to jump yet again. Stars, his nerves were really a bit frazzled right now, he had almost forgotten the pink haired girl who was still kind of standing under his cape. “You two dance AMAZING! I want to learn how to do that too!” Kirby’s enthusiasm was endearing, really. Her little wings even fluttered from the excitement, shaking loose the tiniest of pinkish-white plumes with the movement.
Galacta laughed at that, using one of his own wings to gently boop Kirby on the back of her head. “You’re gonna have to wait until you can fly for that one Kirbs. But maybe we can teach you once you’re old enough, huh?” She nodded excitedly, her blue eyes glowing with happiness. Then she turned to look up at Meta Knight. “Right, I wanted to give you your gift too!” she rummaged around her pockets for a second, pulled out something pink, then proceeded to stuff it into Meta’s free hand before he could even reply.
A gift?
Surprised, Meta looked at what she had handed him – it turned out to be a mechanical pencil, which was very pink and glittery, and covered in a candy-themed pattern, with little lollipops and cupcakes all over. “I didn’t know what to get you, but you like candy and you write a lot so I thought I’d get something that’s both?” Kirby said sheepishly, avoiding Meta’s gaze. “I hope it’s not too pink…” A very warm feeling bloomed in the blue knight’s chest as he looked from the gift to the little girl. He usually didn’t get a lot of gifts from anyone but Galacta, and this was easily one of the sweetest things he had ever recieved.
Smiling, he put the pencil into his pocket so he could ruffle Kirby’s hair, causing her to turn her head back towards him. “Don’t worry, it’s not. Thank you, Kirby.” The little girl’s unsure expression immediately turned into a cute, bright smile, and she wrapped her arms around his legs, burying her face somewhere in the side of his leg. “That reminds me, I got interrupted by the crowd earlier,” Gala hummed, moving a bit closer on Meta’s unoccupied side. “My gift is very cliché and not as cool as that pencil though.” With that, the pink warrior used his free hand to cup Meta’s chin and pull him close into a sweet kiss. When their lips parted, his face was dusted a pretty shade of pink, but he kept his hand on Meta’s face nonetheless. “Cute,” Meta hummed, causing Galacta to bristle a bit at the remark, mouth twisting into a mock pout. “Look who’s talking Mr. Purple Eyes,” the other remarked snappily, pinching Meta’s cheek. Rolling his eyes, the blue knight brushed off Galacta’s hand, only to turn the tables around and grab him by the chin instead. “Let’s just agree that we’re both being sappy,” he chuckled, before drawing in the pink warrior for another kiss, ignoring the little high-pitched giggle that came from somewhere underneath his cape.
Maybe coming here hadn’t been such a bad idea after all.
Notes:
And that's it! I hope those of you who stuck around this long enjoy the ending <3
It is very sappy and very gay, and got even cheesier courtesy of CrybabySapphire's lovely ideas! You never fail to amaze me with your creativity, thank you so much with your help on this <33
