Work Text:

The stage was theirs, there was no one else.

They were surrounded by clouds of dirt and smoke that got kicked up.

A hand in hand, holding it up about shoulder height, Vox’s hand on Alastor’s lower back, while his was on Vox’s shoulder.

It was as if they couldn’t hear a single sound, and honestly, they couldn’t. They didn’t know the state of the territory, didn’t know how their companions were holding up, they were tuned into one channel.

There was a mesh of radio static, as well as tv on the outside, the sync of their channels could be heard halfway across the pride ring.

No radio.

No tv.

It was like Hell was dealing with a power outage.

When electricity could be heard, and the sight of green fire came out, everyone knew.

They took a few steps together, their steps in sync as if they practised this dance. The both were looking into each other’s eyes, wide grins on both sides.

“I have to admit, you did pretty good Bambi.”

“I could say the same to you, you piece of shit television.”

They both laughed.

No words were spoken, it was only through their connection.

Vox swung them around, gently leaning in, both of his hands around his waist. Alastor bending backwards a little, his hands now on Vox’s shoulders. Their gazes never left each other, Alastor’s remaining as dials, and Vox’s were dim, but they were still there.

“Don’t trip up now Bambi, you wouldn’t want to fall~”

That’s when Alastor pushed back up, and their waltz continued.

“Says the one tripping over his own feet.”

They laughed again, there wasn’t any fighting, simple banter now.

It was shocking to say the least, at least to Alastor. To Vox, it was a piercing feeling.

Every one of their footprints were red, as if they were coated in blood.

“I know you’ve always been watching, every corner I turned, you were always there. Couldn’t make it seem any more desperate?”

“You know, I wouldn’t have done it if I knew your eyes wouldn’t be on me”

“What makes you think you’d ever have a chance?”

Another spin, a low music starting to play for them. It was soft, mostly to help them keep on the same page. They were moving as if they were one person, holding each other close, especially when Alastor wrapped his arms around his.

“That tone in your voice, it’s almost the same when you’re broadcasting.”

“Oh? So you do listen?”

“Of course, that voice, so passionate, loving every second you spoke. I get to listen to it, even if it was angry.”

“I suppose we are both rather pathetic then, hm?”

Vox chuckled softly, taking a few steps back, Alastor following before stepping back, turning a bit as he followed.

“We really are. I mean look at us, your eyes have never looked away, not once.”

“Guilty as charged I suppose, but your eyes have never swayed either.”

The fire was starting to go out just a little bit, but the electric sparks did too. They were both meshing together and dwindling out as one.

“Who would have guessed, demons like us could have such feelings.”

“Indeed, we were meant to be enemies, yet I feel something in my cold dead heart. Could this simply be adrenaline?”

“Maybe, but I can feel everything in my processors, almost like it was buzzing. Maybe it is adrenaline, but I wouldn’t give it up. I want to remember this.”

“How do you plan to remember it, hm?”

“Well, I didn’t think that far ahead okay.”

Alastor laughed softly, and Vox smiled a genuinely happy smile.

“You never think that far ahead, darling.”

“I do too.”

“You really don’t, you live on impulse. It must be a nice change to planning every movement.”

This time Vox laughed.

“You just need to let loose, grandpa.”

“Oh? How has that worked out for you?”

“Looks like we are both wrong, huh?”

“Seems rather fitting though, does it not?”

Vox pulled back, taking Alastor’s hand and creating an arch so the radio demon could twirl before they went back to their original positions. The dance however was slowing down, they were now just swaying, holding each other much closer, but those eyes still didn’t part.

“This was always how this was going to end, you and I both know this. We’re equally matched, equally determined, equally stupid.”

“We truly are, if only we weren’t so different, we could have dominated Hell, with everyone at our mercy.”

“Think of all the shit of each other we wouldn’t have broken.”

“I don’t know how many times I had to replace my microphone.”

“Your microphone? Do you know how much fixing my screen costs?”

“If you didn’t have a screen for a face you wouldn’t have that problem you know.”

“Haha very funny, like I got to choose this.”

“It suits you though.”

They both smiled softly to each other.

The longer the dance went, the deeper the connection got. They were in what looked to be a void, an unfamiliar one. This wasn’t Alastor’s doing, so where would it lead them?

“You know, I’ve always wondered something.”

“And what might that be?”

“Your hair… Are those like actual ears?”

Alastor chuckled softly and nodded.

“It is why my hearing is as good as it is.”

“Now that I think about it, it really is.”

“You know, for the great media demon, you’re not very bright.”

“You know what, you never let me touch them. I almost did that one time and you bit me.”

“Ahh yes, what a fun day.”

Their clothes were starting to fade to their human versions. Both with white dress shirts, suspenders, their shoes remained the same, but the only difference was Alastor had a bow, while Vox had a tie.

“The song is almost over…”

“It is… It’s quite unfortunate. I would like to stay here just a little longer.”

Vox chuckled softly.

Around them, the fire and sparks had stopped, the cloud was settling, and everyone was waving the dust out of their faces, coughing. Both sides, halting their war to see what was about to happen.

“I love you, Alastor.”

“I’ve always loved you, Vox.”

They were in their human forms, leaning into each other, and just as their lips touched, the void consumed them.

Alastor and Vox’s bodies hit the ground at the same time.

Vox had a large hole in his screen, as well as his chest.

Alastor was covered in burn marks, some of his clothing sliced open or melted to the skin. All of the media, every radio stayed down.

Hell was quiet.

As they lay there together.

Together until the very end.
