Work Text:

Her boy was happy. She was laying on his lap, dozing after a long day of tomfoolery, when she felt it.

He radiated happiness, a sweet, pure energy pouring off of him. She was happy, because he was happy.

-

Her boy was nervous! A wreck with frantic energy, awaiting…. something.

She bounded to the door when she heard a knock.

NEW SMELL!

Her boy opened the door with a smile.

“Nellie!” THAT WAS HER!

“Boof!” she greeted the new smell.

He reached down to give her attention.

Good person, she decided. Good smell.

Cold! Energy! Happy! New smells!

She snuggled into her boy and new-good-smell boy. If only her boy could smell this joyous and free every day.

-

Her boy was sad. He was… confused. She pushed her nose into his stomach, and he gave her a pet. All she wanted was to take away his pain. She was there for him.

And when her boy is sad, she knows that just being with him will help him out.

-

Her boy smelled like new-good-smell-boy. She barked at him, and he smiled at her. He always felt happy after being with good-smell-boy.

-

Her boy was figuring things out, she thought. The confusion came less, and the joy came more.

Good-smell boy came on WALKS with them, and they lazed around in the park with her, throwing her balls as they laughed together.

“Boof!” She let them know that she approved. Her boy smiled.

-

Her boy smelt like danger, blood, fear, and sad. Good-smell boy was there too, but weaker. She did not like it.

She rested her head on his lap as they drove home, trying to make it better.

Back in their room, she pushed her nose into him. He didn’t give her a pet.

She whined, and reached up to lick his face. He barely reacted.

This was not good. Not good at all.

-

Her boy smelt sad, so sad. She couldn’t smell good-smell boy at all.

This was wrong.

She just snuggled closer to him, trying to take some of that sadness from him. He was her boy. And she would look after him.

-

And then finally

Her boy smelt at peace. He smelt like the sea, like salt air, like oily fish and chips, and like Charlie.

She snuggled up to him, and he pet her head.

“It’s all going to be okay, Nellie. It will all be okay.”

And it was.

Notes:

And they all lived happily ever after, and Nellie lived forever. No excuses for this one, just happiness.
