Chapter 1: Toxic Blood
Chapter Text
The name Fairmont was respected. Feared. When Juliette was a child, people would point at her family and whisper behind cupped hands, across the tops of magazines while getting a daily blowout, and everywhere in-between.
“Your mama sure is lucky to be married to such an intelligent, good-looking man,” Bunny had once remarked when Juliette was twelve and mindlessly sipping from a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade. Juliette had nodded politely. Behind his mother, Ben had made a face at her, causing her to snort-laugh lemonade into her white blouse.
“Not very becoming of a young lady,” Her mom had tutted at her after picking her up. “Not to worry, we’ll get it dry-cleaned.” In the passenger seat, Elinor locked eyes with her in the rearview mirror and sneered. Juliette had glowered at her, but kept her mouth shut. Like a good girl.
When she was fourteen, she had been cornered in a hallway after school one day by a group of girls, who had started taunting her. One of the girls – Alice? – had pushed her, calling her a ‘dyke’ and making crude jokes about her sister, then-seventeen at the time. Down at the other end of the hallway, Elinor had been passing by, her heels clicking against shiny linoleum. Her sister glanced over at them, met Juliette’s eyes, and simply smirked before walking away. The next day, Alice had simply vanished, and Juliette wasn’t surprised to later find the girl’s signature rose gold 'A' necklace tucked away into her sister’s belongings, while she had been searching for a hairbrush she liked.
So, yeah. Power followed them wherever they went. And now, as Juliette was running through the forest, twigs snapping beneath her feet, leaves rustling as she zig-zagged through the trees, she was sure she never should have been born into this family, nonetheless as a bloodline Legacy.
It was because of Calliope that she had been out this late. Calliope was the reason she hadn’t fed in a while, because her girlfriend, er, ex-girlfriend, was right – she was a monster.
And it was almost embarrassing how easily her guard had been letdown. How easily another Hunter had overpowered her, slashing her arms, legs, and torso with glistening silver weaponry. She obviously couldn’t be killed, but she did get hurt.
Bad.
Juliette slowed to a slow, dragging walk, only just catching a glimpse of herself in the window of a nearby shop. Shit. She looked awful.
“You lost to a Hunter, sweet little?” Juliette could practically hear Elinor droll in a bemused tone. “What a pity.”
Only under the dim, flickering glow of a street lamp, did Juliette finally pause to rest. Her own blood filled her nostrils and her stomach lurched.
Fuck.
Running in the dark was the only way Cal could think anymore. Not that thinking really got her anywhere. No matter how hard she ran, her mind would drift to Juliette. Juliette softly cupping the bee from her shoulder, her intoxicating scent wafting into Cal's nostrils, the hair on the back of Cal's neck raising in alarm. A strange juxtaposition of terror and tenderness roiling in her stomach. She was so cute. So earnest and shy. But it was just an act, she had told herself.
Cal's footfalls rounded a corner populated by parked vehicles and hanging trees, lit only by street lamps. Juliette in the pantry, the softness and desperation with which she kissed Cal, like she had never felt so good in her life. Cal had let her guard down then, for just the amount of time it took to leave Juliette absolutely breathless in that pantry, and then, the telltale pinpricks of teeth against her carotid. Fangs penetrating her skin, Juliette's lip softly resting into Cal's neck. Even now, after everything, after the whirlwind that was their violent delight in each other, Cal had a hard time remembering the pantry as anything but life-changing. Juliette had bitten her, yes, but there was a softness to her bite, an astonishingly earnest longing that had thrown Cal. So that even when she had lodged the stake in Julliette's chest, Cal's blood trickling from a fanged mouth, Cal wasn't ready to say goodbye. And when Juliette didn't turn to dust as Cal was expecting, she didn't have to.
She'd gotten to know a vampire, a monster. Gotten to love a creature she had been taught to hate and trained to kill. And after everything, after the softness of the bee, the sweetness of the bite, the violent protection of Juliette's first kill, and Cal's, after choosing Juliette over her family and giving up all that she had ever dreamed to take a chance on a beautiful monster, the creature she had always feared showed its ugly face.
When Cal had learned that Juliette had turned Theo, she had been too stunned to speak, watching Juliette giving her arm to her brother allowing him to drink from "the one who turned him". And then, like a dam that had just been waiting to burst, Cal had let out every single insecurity and fear she had been pushing aside since the moment Juliette had grinned at her and told her she could hear her heartbeat. Since that monster had used its powers to get in her head.
Juliette had sobbed, begging Cal to see reason, to see that they belonged together. But Cal knew she was finally seeing reason for the first time. What had she always been told? The ones who look human are the worst, the most monstrous of all. She had trusted Juliette. Trusted a monster. And now her brother was a monster too. And Juliette was the one she had to thank for the torpedo that had destroyed her family. The family she had only ever wanted to be a part of. A feeling she could only have if she became a skilled monster hunter.
On these runs, Cal sometimes went on unsanctioned trips to the graveyard just to fight something, just to feel something. She often took down ghouls since they tended to frequent the gravesites. But she especially reveled in killing vampires. Maybe she couldn't take on a Legacy… yet. But she could easily stake the feral ones. When she turned them to dust, they blew away in the wind and everytime she was back to the moment she staked Juliette. The betrayal written across her face as her eyes had glazed over and she had collapsed.
Vampires, monsters, didn't have feelings. They were creatures. Just dangerous feral evil creatures. They didn't deserve sympathy or fondness.
The telltale hiss of a vamp echoed through the graveyard and Cal got into position, stalking the sound. She heard the penetrating blows of a stake, but no sound of dust crumbling. Angry cursing sounded from the other side of the graveyard as she heard the hunter dragging the body. The vampire snarled in exhaustion and pain accompanied by a small whimper. Then a cry of agony and confusion filled the air and the slide of a body slumping onto the ground.
Cal followed the sounds and the blood trail with quick foxsteps, trying her best to remain hidden among the trees and the headstones. From behind the bushes, she could see the scene.
The hunter clutched his bloodied hand as he lay sprawled out on the ground, hissing and gnashing his teeth at the bound and beaten creature. Until even his jaw went slack. Paralyzed. The man was paralyzed. And the vampire caught in his tangled web of silver chains, a bloody chest wound already healing from the stake, was none other than Juliette Fairmont. The one vampire Cal couldn't kill, and not just because she didn't know how.
She was about to approach Juliette, a little loathe to threaten her while she was already down, but Cal reminded herself that Juliette was a monster, just like she was taught she was, and didn't deserve consideration any more than any other creature that preyed on humans. Then Juliette, singed by the silver, wiggled her bloodied body out from underneath the chains and ran as fast as she could given her injuries. Cal chased her down and found her leaning against the back wall of an old cafe, hidden from prying eyes despite the public location. And if Cal looked closely and listened, she could hear the sobs of grief and pain from the silhouette in front of her.
Juliette heard, no smelled, Cal before she saw her. But she told herself that she was still coming off an adrenaline high, and was simply imagining it. There was no way Cal had followed her. Right? The irony that Juliette, in this moment, was more wary of Cal than Cal probably was of her – after all, a human along with a monster on a dimly lit street was so ‘80s horror movie cliché – was not lost on her. Juliette got nervous when she didn’t study for a test. Her stomach had been an endless buzz of anxiety when she had come out to Elinor, but that was nothing compared to how Juliette felt now.
Juliette felt like she had swallowed a whole pound of pure silver. Her nerves cracked and her flesh burned in the cool night air. She wasn’t sure which was making her more nauseous – the fact that she hadn’t fed in over 48 hours or the fact that Cal’s sweat, mixed with her usual vanilla body spray, had caused a scent so intoxicating it was almost like being drunk. Juliette swallowed, willing her heartbeat to slow down. God, if Cal could hear it…
Her tongue ran over her teeth, subconsciously – consciously? – pausing at each fang. Don’t just stand here, stupid, her mind screamed at her. Say something! Anything!
As Cal made her way toward her, Juliette began to panic even more. She was acutely aware that Cal could have been working with that bastard hunter who had done this to her. But she wasn’t. Right?
“…Did you know that only half of a dolphin’s brain sleeps at a time?” Juliette blurted out. “More than what I’m getting.”
….Goddamnit.
Juliette Fairmont, ever the charmer.
Cal ducked under the cover of night, her heartbeat thrumming in her chest, her mind spinning with the possibilities of what it meant to once again be in the vicinity of this unkillable monster, this incredible creature who had once stolen her heart and, as she expected of a monster, ripped it to shreds. But her heartbeat, ever intent on betraying her in Juliette's presence, raced as she took in the frail whimpering shadow before her.
She could almost hear the sultry teasing of Juliette's voice, eyebrow raised in challenge.
I can hear your heartbeat. It races when you lie.
Instead the voice formed different words. Unexpected words. But words that were undoubtedly Julliette's.
An awkward fun fact only Juliette could bring up in such tense circumstances.
Across the street from that soft, small voice, Cal burst out laughing and came closer to Juliette. She was so endearing. How could something so freaking dorky be a monster? At that moment, all of the pain subsided for a second and they were Cal and Jules, reciting Shakespeare and talking about their favorite books, being their truest most deeply nerdy selves together. In a way that by virtue of their family Legacies could never be allowed.
Cal shook herself out of her reverie. And reminded herself yet again of the pain wrought by believing in Jules. She was a monster. A dangerous, evil, manipulative monster. A vicious, twisted, monstrous thing. A snarling, whimpering, bloodied creature. Who she couldn't help but follow the pull of as she approached Jules. Her small soft shadow giving way to light blue gentle eyes, glinting with hurt. A torso bleeding from the stake wound, burns covering her arms, singeing her face. Her fangs bloodied not from feeding but rather an injury to her mouth.
Seeing Julliette's terrible state in the light was too much for Cal to force herself to forget the way she cared about her. Cal's heart stuttered in horror at the sight before her and as Juliette lifted her head up she had the slightest sparkle of mischief in her eye. I can hear your heartbeat. It races when you lie.
Cal quickly cast her head down, not wanting to see the enticing smirk on the girl she still loved. Wishing her heartbeat wasn't so loud with its honesty. But as she looked down at Juliette's crimson-covered legs, she lost all resolve not to touch her. She reached out to place her hand tenderly on a torn shoulder and Juliette hissed in warning.
Cal's mind flung back to another time when Juliette had been bleeding. Eyes pouring red at a funeral, wiping the blood away and running to the hallway. She had looked so disheveled then, nothing compared to how horrifically marred she looked now. Following her down the hallway and fighting on the rooftop had been ill-advised to say the least. The consequence of Cal's right fist connecting with the jaw of a Legacy Vampire leaving her hand bloody and body paralyzed. It had worn off, but not before Juliette had run away, apologizing for paralyzing Cal when she had been the one to hit her.
It's not me. It's my blood. It paralyzes. And Cal was reminded of how she saw Juliette then, like an animal backed into a corner. A creature armed by nature with a mechanism for killing prey and attacking predators. Broken and covered in blood as she was, Juliette was still that dangerous creature she'd been warned about. She still couldn't touch her. And she most certainly couldn't hold her like she had desperately wanted to only moments ago.
Don’t!” Juliette croaked hoarsely, stumbling back. “I – I mean, you can’t,” she whispered, more to herself than to Cal. “You’ll be paralyzed.”
Juliette took another step back, then paused, one foot hovering above the cracked street beneath them. Then she took another step closer to Calliope, almost timidly. “You should see the other guy,” she tried to joke, instantly wishing she could take it back. What a stupid think to joke about. Why did Cal always leave her a bubbling, incoherent mess? It was so unbecoming of a Fairmont.
“…Did, uh, did you know that the only birds that can swim and not fly, are penguins?” Juliette shrugged her shoulders meekly. She could still smell Cal’s sweat and her goddamn vanilla shampoo. Cal’s heart was strumming rhythmically against her chest, and Juliette wanted to do nothing more than place her hand over it.
“You'll have my heart?”
“Forever.”
That moment between them had been playing in her head rent free on a loop ever since. It was really irritating. If she stood still and shut her eyes, Juliette could pretend to be back in Cal’s room. Her splash of neon colors, her bookshelves lined with everything from Romeo and Juliet to the Brothers’ Grimm. It wasn’t a surprise to her that both books looked like they’d been read a thousand times each.
“Did you ever play hide-and-seek as a kid?” Juliette asked quietly, glancing up at the full moon above them. It was a beautiful sight, and the faint glow made Cal’s skin sleek with sweat, shine. Fuck.
“Stupid question, of course you have.” Juliette mumbled, not giving Cal a chance to respond. She just kept talking and couldn’t stop. “When we were growing up, Elinor used to force me to play this super fucked-up version of that damned game with the neighborhood kids.”
A light breeze picked up and Juliette winced at the slight pain; her skin prickled uncomfortably from the deep burns embedded by fucking silver. “Usually in a game of hide-and-seek, there’s only one seeker, right?"
Juliette laughed bitterly and dared a step toward Cal. “Nope. Not in my family. Not with Elinor. See, Elinor always wanted to train me. Mold me into her little mini-me; her own doll, with which she could parade around like a fucking American Girl doll.”
Juliette shut her eyes, inhaling deeply. “She thought putting pressure on me would somehow force me into being a perfect, fierce little vampire. So, in her game. There were two seekers. Elinor and I would have to find our friends. But not together….”
Juliette paused momentarily, wondering why she was sharing this memory with Cal. It was something- a secret, naturally – she had never told anyone. It was one of the many twisted games Elinor would play with her.
“We would play in groups of twelve. Two seekers, ten hiders. Five for each of us. The race was on. We had to find all five of our teammates before the other did. It was sort of like that one game, capture the flag? Except the flags were humans.”
Juliette was now standing so close to Cal she could see the flecks of gold in her deep brown eyes. “But if Elinor found one of my teammates before I did?”
A bitter laugh escaped her there. It hurt. Partly because her throat was so dry, and partly because the memory was very painful to bring up. “Then I lost. Whoever found all their teammates first won. And what was the prize?”
Juliette threw her hands up. “Fucking blood, Cal. That was my motivation. Elinor threatened to drain my friends of their blood if she found them before I could. So, I made damn sure I won, every single time. Except one day I didn’t.”
Juliette’s eyes dropped. She could feel the tears building. Bile bubbling in her stomach, threatening to ooze to the surface. She blinked rapidly. Juliette would rather take another round of silver bullets than cry right now in front of Cal. “That was the day I truly realized how different I am from my sister. How different I am from everyone.”
A long stretch of silence passed between them, and Juliette crumbled, falling to her knees, taking her hands through her hair in choking, uneven sobs. “Fuck, Cal. I’m sorry, okay? I’m so sorry for changing Theo. I’m sorry for what Elinor did. For everything my family has done. I’m just — I’m sorry.”
If Cal had wanted to hold Juliette when she saw she was in physical agony, now she wanted to clutch onto her and never let her go. And if it weren't for the toxic blood still fresh in places, and the dried blood that wasn't the least bit wiped away, she would have thrown caution to the wind and held the girl she loved, willing all of her pain away with her arms tight around her. She wanted to kiss her head and her face and look into her eyes and see the truth of her heart wrenching apology, the depth of her tormented past written in those deep pools of blue.
So it was probably a good thing she couldn't touch her because it was happening again. Rendered helpless by this honest, sensitive creature, a creature that could kill her in a second but whose heart seemed so unendingly warm and earnest. She desperately wanted to, but she recalled the pain searing through her as her muscles had locked in place on the rooftop. Being privy to Juliette's darkest secrets and wanting to comfort her could not overcome the memory of what would happen to Cal if she did.
So she sat back and listened. Juliette moved closer as she vented the horrors of manipulation to which she had been subjected as a child. And Cal felt a tightness in her chest and a dark fury at how this soft and precious person had been treated in such a way by her own family, her own sister.
Not knowing completely what to say but wanting to respond with a semblance of the vulnerability Juliette had shared with her, Cal's head was downcast and her voice cracked as she spoke.
"Yeah. I played Hide N Seek, with my brothers, Tess, some of the other kids from The Guild. But instead of regular Hide N Seek, we played Hunt N Stake. We had to use our monster hunter training to stalk each other and then mime the action that would kill the monster. Sometimes, kids took it a bit too seriously and didn't exactly mime the staking. I got stabbed in the chest with a blunt stick a few times when I played as a vamp."
Cal looked up into Julliette's eyes and saw her wince at the story. Or maybe she was wincing at Cal's word choice. Not for the first time, she wondered how Juliette lived in a world that distrusted and hated her kind. Vamp was a word that Cal always heard her family use when hunting. But as she took in the discomfort written on Juliette’s face, she saw something familiar. A face she was used to making herself, when ignorant bigots said passive aggressive things about her based on the color of her skin. They always made Cal feel so small, disposable, like a nuisance to run out of town. Cal herself had never been the subject of angry lawn signs but there were symbols with which people adorned their homes that served as a warning to people that looked like her. Even some flags that were intended to be innocuous, overtime, became threatening, hatred spilling like poison from their patriotic displays. Cal swallowed and looked into Juliette’s eyes, the green swirling in the gentle blue more prominent under the glow of the cafe signage.
“Jules… I…” Cal huffed in frustration at how much easier it would be to hold her than to talk. “I hate that you were treated that way. And that…you have had to feel so… uncomfortable being… a vampire." As much of an identity crisis as Cal had experienced being in a family full of hunters but never hunting herself, she knew what it was like to want to fit in with your family. But based on what Juliette was saying… it wasn’t that she didn’t know how being a vampire worked like Cal had accused her, tears streaming down her face as she told the only girl she had ever loved this deeply to stay the hell away from her. Juliette didn’t want to do… what monsters did. She supposed that by virtue of her species, even a vampire like Juliette would have to figure out a way to feed. But the desperation in her voice as she apologized, as she had relayed her painful experience, told Cal that Juliette may be a vampire, something that Cal had been taught to hate and trained to kill. But she was not a monster. As she stared into Juliette’s eyes, shining with tears, she read in them what she imagined Juliette could do when she listened to Cal’s heartbeat. Tired and tearful as those brilliant eyes were, they were steadfast as they looked into Cal’s.
“A few times when I played as a vamp.”
The words cut deeper than Juliette thought they would. It was something she should have been used to – humans pretended to be vampires all the time. She and her family used to make fun of all the ‘vampire tropes’ in movies, like turning into a bat or having to stay away from garlic. It was ridiculous. Humans pretending to be vampires never used to bother her before.
Until now. Knowing that Cal pretended to be a vampire while playing a hunting game with her cousins and brothers and whomever else – that really hurt. “It’s not like I asked to be born as a bloodsucking daywalker,” she grumbled bitterly. “It’s not nearly as fun as media makes it seem.”
The edge in her tone was sharp; misplaced anger directed at a girl she still loved so desperately, she was punishing herself by refusing to feed, because she had betrayed her in the worst way possible.
For someone who drained people of their blood using her fangs, Juliette sure was doing a lot of backstabbing. It was almost humorous. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I know that’s not enough, but I -I don’t know what else I can say. All I know is that — “
Bam!
The breath had been knocked out of her and she had hit her head so hard she almost blacked out. It took a few seconds for her vision to focus and when it did, she found herself staring up at the night sky. Her arms and legs were pinned to her sides and a familiar scent of perfume wafted up her nose.
Oh. Oh, shit
“Sorry to break up your little date, sweet little, but we need to talk,” Elinor sneered. She looked down at Juliette struggling underneath her with disgust. She wasn’t nearly as injured as she was hoping. Fucking human, she thought. “Never send a human to do a vampire’s job, especially not a man.”
Juliette stopped struggling and she went very still. “You sent that hunter after me?” she asked incredulously.
“A silly mistake,” Elinor shrugged carelessly. One hand shot to Jules’ throat and she relished in the fact that her pulse was racing against the pads of her fingertips. It was delightful. “One I won’t make again.”
“Get off,” Juliette choked out. It was only then that she noticed her sister was wearing thick leather gloves. But why would she —
No.
“E-Elinor, please don’t.”
But of course her sister didn’t listen and instead Elinor’s response came in the form of burning flesh as she pressed a handful of silver coins against her cheek, dragging them down and stopping at her collarbone. Her hand had moved from Juliette’s neck to her mouth to cover her screams, and Juliette could do nothing but thrash underneath her as her skin seared with pain, wounds burning into her flesh and blood oozing out.
And then it was over. But only for a brief moment, as her head was forcibly jerked up and her eyes met Cal’s. Elinor was daintily pressing a silver coin to Juliette‘s throat, hovering just a hair’s width above her skin. Her other arm held her in place.
“Cal,” Elinor said cheerfully, as if they were old friends meeting up after a long time apart, “your little girlfriend here is quite something, isn’t she?” Elinor ho-hummed, lazily twirling the coin between slender fingers. “I can’t believe she would turn your own brother,” she simpered, fake sympathy oozing from her tone. “I would be furious. However…”
Elinor pressed the silver into her sister’s skin, her smile widening when Juliette shrieked in pain. “I can help you with that. After all, I do know how to kill a Legacy. How about it? I tell you how to kill sweet little, and you do it. And in return….”
Elinor smirked and sat back against the lamppost, dragging her sister a few feet further away from the human. “I can turn Theo back into a human.”

Chapter Text
When Theseus Burns came into Cal's life, she had barely been born. But he was her brother, through and through. And when Calliope was old enough, they spent their days playfighting with Apollo, dreaming of the Guild Academy and what it would be like to finally take down a monster. When she was 5 years old, Theo got his first kill, a nargacuga, a furry winged fanged creature with unbelievable strength and an even worse temper. Cal had run to hug him after his hunt and found him a bit shaken but also overcome with adrenaline.
"Aw Cal," Her big brother said excitedly "I wish you'd have been there. He was in my face and I was terrified but I shot anyway! I could see right through to the other side!" He adjusted his glasses and put his hand firmly on her shoulder. "You're gonna get there someday, Baby sister. You got this." He said with a wink.
After everything that had happened, Cal didn't even get to tell him about her first kill, beheading a zombie that was attacking her girlfriend. He would've been so proud! Cal winced at the realization that she couldn't tell Theo anything anymore, her mom had hidden him somewhere away from Cal's father and besides, he was a monster now. He wasn't her brother anymore. That's what her dad had said, that's what she had been taught. That's what her relationship with Juliette had her starting to question and what her mother refused to consider a possibility. Thinking about what happened to Theo, not even the betrayal by Juliette, but what happened to her brother, his pain, his almost death, his transformation, always made bile rise in Cal's throat. Her brother had survived a vampire attack before he came to live with them, an attack where a Legacy vampire drained his mother in broad daylight. It wasn't even just that he had been taught to hate them. Cal's hate was taught. Theo's hate was lived.
When she had seen him at the dinner table, friendly and chatty, she had no idea how to proceed. On the one hand, she had seen Apollo, holding Theo's bloody, lifeless body in that bathroom stall, reciting the stupid Guild Creed just to stay afloat. They had recited it together, Juliette's hand resting comfortingly on Cal's back as she let out shrieking sobs. And on the other hand, there he was, smiling, eating, teasing Apollo, just as he always did. It was so tempting to just try to forget what had happened to Theo, especially since no one remembered anything about it. But then, the gut-wrenching screams coming from his bedroom. Giving up her phone and a line to Juliette at her parents' insistence had seemed a small price to pay to figure out what was happening to her brother. Seeing him thrashing on his bed screaming for mom. Not his mom as he often tried to delineate. But Talia. He yelled desperately for Talia, his fangs coming in dripping with the blood from ripping into his gums, his eyes pouring blood from the unmet desire to feed. Cal couldn't ignore what she had seen. Somewhere between whatever went down with Apollo and Theo in that restroom and the moment Talia cradled Cal's big brother sobbing into her arms, her brother had been turned. Talia hadn't wanted Cal to be around to see her brother like that, and sheltered her, taking her upstairs as Cal heard the deeply earnest screams of her name in her brother's timbre. Everything she had been taught told her that a monster had overtaken her brother's body. But everything she had learned with Juliette had her wanting to believe otherwise.
And then the betrayal. When she got some space from the intensity of the moment, Cal had understood why Juliette had turned Theo. But she also didn't care. There was no way in hell her brother had asked for this and Juliette didn't know him well enough to make the choice for him. And then she had had the audacity to try to keep Cal under her thrall. Appealing to her romantic side, even saying she loved Cal through tears and sobs that would haunt Cal for weeks. Seeing right through to Cal's heart as always and knowing that Cal loved her too. But everything was too much. There was too much anger and violence and confusion for Cal to ever admit that fact to Juliette. Her heart boiled with rage as she had directed a silver spear at the creature who had done this to her wonderful, strong, gentle, kind, big brother. Poison spilling out of her mouth in absolute anguish at the pain of losing her brother in two different ways, and losing her girlfriend because, in effect, it was she who had killed him.
Cal leveled a haughty Elinor with a stare. "If you tell me how to kill her... and I do it... you can...un-turn my brother?"
Elinor smirked at a soft and sullen Juliette. "I heard you liked to kill monsters. It shouldn't be too hard. I'll tell you how and you'll finally be rid of this dangerous and hurtful creature." Elinor pouted her lip exaggeratedly at the last few words.
Cal loved Theo, he was the only one who made her feel like a part of the family even when she hadn't made a first kill. And she couldn't forget the earnestness in his pleas when he had turned. He sounded human. As human as Juliette. It was Juliette's smile that drew her in. She had felt the stare of someone while she read her book in the cafeteria, and when she raised her eyes to the source, Juliette had stared back with an almost knowing grin, encouraging her and making her feel wanted, known, soft. Cal felt soft when she had first looked into those blue eyes, Juliette's slight and gentle smile settled and earnest. And once they'd met, Cal had known beyond the shadow of a doubt that she was dealing with a monster, a daywalker to be exact. She was just so invested in appearing kind, it had been hard to spot. But once Cal was tracking the beast, she knew it was only a matter of time before her first kill. Before the pantry, Juliette's energy had seemed odd, nervous. Not self-assured and suave like she had believed vampires to be. But once she made sure she went first into the pantry at the party, she readied herself for an attack. And she was met with a sudden, impossibly gentle, searching kiss. The stuttering and earnest reply that followed her shock and incredulity was a salve to the intense burn of her murderous intent. Kissing Juliette felt like freedom. Cal threw caution to the wind and kissed a vampire. Beyond kissing, she made out with a vampire. She held that small and beautiful creature against her own body as the vampire rolled her hips into hers. She sucked on the vampire's neck with desperate kisses, felt the vampire's heat against her own leg, gripped the thighs of that gorgeous creature and went to the other side of her neck, gently biting. In hopes of coaxing the intensity of her lust. Whether that was her vampiric bloodlust or lust for Cal, she didn't care, all she had wanted was Juliette.
And in the days that followed, all she still wanted was Juliette. She wanted Juliette when she saw her absolutely disheveled in the hallway, her hair sticking out in odd places, her sleepless night drawing dark shadows beneath her eyes. She'd wanted Juliette when she chased her onto that roof, bleeding eyes, toxic blood and everything. With everything in her body, Cal longed to have her again. She rolled her eyes at the self-satisfied smirk of a vampire who knew how to read heartbeats. Knew that if she hadn't been bitten, Calliope Burns, monster hunter, may never have stopped kissing Juliette Fairmont, a dangerous vampire. When her family had given her "the honor of killing Juliette", Cal had known instantly she couldn't do it. And maybe if she hadn't have told Tess her misgivings, she might have been able to whisk Juliette away and run away with her before everything had gotten nasty and messy between their families. Instead she was left with Cook leering at her, goading her and trying to get in her head. She had knocked him out easily only for him to follow her next captor.
It was a vague remembrance for Cal, arms and torso tied to a tree by rope, a strange stinging in her arm where a fresh wound seemed to be responding to the cool breeze of the night air. Juliette hovering over her, whispering her name, blood on her lip and a small swipe of it on her chin, eyes blown wide in hunger, arousal and terror. As Cal had awoken, she wanted Juliette safe above all else. Despite her hoarse pleas for Juliette to get out of there, she was too late and the noise they used to disorient monsters had Juliette clutching her head in surprise and agony. She had done everything in her power to protect her, so when Juliette set her free, she had run the opposite direction. She'd wanted to stay and nurse Juliette out of the madness the sirens overhead were causing. But, as she considered going back for her, she ran right into Cook. He duct taped her mouth and all but revealed to her that the Guild was no longer on her side, shutting a truck door in her face once he'd forced her into the backseat of his vehicle. She had tried to scream but the duct tape was strong and muffled her cries.
With a sudden slam, Cook's face was pressed into the window, instantly bloodied, with a small body in a golden dress, twisting his arms around and pointing a knife at him, opening the door for Cal. Juliette had saved her life. The way that the Guild functioned, Cal hadn't been sure that anyone would have ever found her since Rogue agents were often wanted dead or alive. And she supposed that beginning to fall for a monster had taken its toll on her reputation within the Guild. After taking out Cook with a move Theo had taught her, Cal joined Juliette in going to Ben's house to figure out what to do with the body. But the body was missing and when the "creepy dead guy" returned, all it took was a punch to his face and Juliette had him on the ground, hands gripping his head, pushing down to stop him fighting, a hiss as she let her fangs come in, and then Juliette fed. And Cal watched in awe as this girl, face covered in blood, unbelievable ecstasy emanating from her face after experiencing the taste she so craved, drained the man who had put Cal and now Ben in danger. Watching this intimate moment, this point where Juliette chose her nature endeared Cal to Juliette and made her feel deeply interested in feeling Juliette against her again. Everything that Juliette had done was to protect Cal.
Pint sized as she may be, Juliette was formidable but as Cal gazed upon the body of the girl she loved, littered in silver burns on her face, her chest, her throat, everything became clear to Cal. When Cal was vulnerable, even at Elinor's torment, Juliette stood firm against her and against her own nature to protect Cal. She took down Cook in two seconds flat, his face deflated and grey the instant she'd had her fill, to protect Cal, to protect Ben. Juliette was a vampire true, but she was also human. And not just in the biological sense given her father's residual humanity. Juliette had resorted to violence and her nature as a vampire only when coming to the rescue of those she loved. That softness she'd felt, that genuine yearning, that wonderful knowing smirk when Cal was lying, it wasn't a facade Juliette wore to draw in her victims. It was the person that she was. Which meant, Theo was also probably still the person he was, but now with bloodlust and relative immortality. And getting him back as a human was not necessarily what he wanted anymore. What Juliette had taught Jules more than anything was that a monster deserved sometimes to be heard.
Cal turned her attention on Elinor, the truly monstrous monster before her and glanced at Juliette. Juliette's head hung low at first, but when Cal started to speak, her eyes terrified and heartbroken, met Cal's. Cal recalled her brother and everything he'd been to her. Recalled Juliette and how much she'd changed Cal's life.
A tear fell from her eye as she spoke in a tortured whisper low and sure. "I just want my brother back." She hung her head as the tears fell, her heart racing.
“See?” Elinor sneered. “I told you humans were weak, Juliette. She just agreed to kill you in exchange for getting her brother back. That has got to feel like a gut-punch.”
And then she was on her feet, yanking her sister up by her neck, nails pressed deep into her skin, “I would be absolutely delighted to tell you, Calliope. Or…”
Elinor tilted her head to the side and studied the two girls between them. It was just like her sister to fall for a human. A hunter, no less. Juliette was no better than their pathetic mother. “or Juliette, you can feed off your precious chew toy.” Elinor’s fingers curled around Juliette’s wrist and she shoved her forward until she almost grazed Calliope’s hand, before roughly yanking her back. “You feed from this –“ Elinor glanced at Calliope in disgust and pursed her lips, “— human, or I tell her how to kill you.”
Elinor’s hands moved Juliette’s shoulders and she gripped them tightly, relishing in the fact that her little sister was shaking under her fingertips. Her lips found Juliette’s ear, and she dropped her voice to a low, throaty whisper. “We both know she’ll do it. Kill or be killed.”
A long beat of silence passed and Juliette swallowed thickly, eyes darting nervously between Cal and her sister. There was no way Cal would actually go through with it. She tore her gaze away, focusing on a discarded bottle of Jack Daniels someone had failed to properly throw away. There was still some dark, sticky liquid in the bottle, and Juliette envisioned herself downing the last bit of it – liquid courage, after all – before smashing it over her sister’s head.
“Well?” Elinor’s fangs peeked out from her lips and she grinned cheekily at her sister. “I’m waiting.”
“Go fuck yourself, Elinor,” Juliette finally spat out, hoping she sounded more courageous than she felt. “I will never hurt Cal.”
Elinor smiled placidly. “Such foul language, sweet little.”
In a flash, Elinor surged forward, grabbing Calliope around her waist and lurching her back. Her hand snaked around Cal’s wrist and she wrenched her arm up, shoving it in front of Juliette’s mouth.
“Do it,” Elinor hissed. She could hear the way the human’s heart quickened. It went from a slow, steady beat to fast-paced and uneven. Heart palpitations? How fickle.
“No, Juliette croaked, taking a quick step back.
Elinor rolled her eyes and, with one hand still in a vice grip around Calliope’s waist, tugged Juliette back by her hair, smirking when her sister cried out. She shoved Juliette forward once more, ensuring that the girls wouldn’t quite touch. “Sweet little,” Elinor deadpanned. “Must we have a repeat of Barcelona?”
"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" Cal yelled in horror. The angle was odd with Elinor's sharp nails digging cruelly into her back.
"I'll give you some foul fucking language, you insane bitch. This wasn't our plan. I guess this is just what to expect from a monster, no follow through, no integrity. No fucking spine."
Cal tried and failed to pry off the talons encircling her waist, wincing at the pinched grimace Juliette now had from the way Elinor had lurched her backward, her hair in a vice as Elinor both pulled her hair and pushed her forward.
Cal could see the fangs starting to come in, an apologetic look spreading across Julliette's face, settling softly as she leaned into her resolve not to feed. Juliette was so strong and this horrendous creature had tormented her in so many upsetting and evil ways. Even as Juliette's fangs nearly came to scrape at her arm, Cal wanted so desperately to hold and protect her and figure out some way to bring this sadistic bitch down.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
And then Cal was spewing words of hate, of disgust at her sister, but Juliette couldn’t comprehend what Cal was saying, for Elinor’s words were much louder in her head. A constant ringing.
Barcelona.

Chapter Text
A loud, uneven gasp left Juliette’s throat and she used the last bit of her strength to wrench away from her sister and Cal, completely oblivious to what was happening next to her.
Barcelona.
Juliette stumbled back, nearly tripping over the damn bottle of Jack Daniels, and took long, wheezing breaths. Her hands pressed against her temples as her head started to pound. It felt like someone had clocked her in the chest with Thor’s hammer. “No, no, no,” Juliette moaned.
Elinor opened her mouth to reply, but stopped when she caught sight of her sister, practically tripping over her own feet. She knew what was happening. Elinor was no stranger to her sister’s panic attacks.
“Are you seriously having a panic attack right now?” she asked incredulously. Not that Elinor was surprised. Her sister had always been so weak. So pathetic.
Seizing the opportunity, Elinor lunged forward and roughly grabbed Calliope’s cheeks, forcing her to look at her. “Don’t get cold feet on me. You have one hour to make up your mind, Burns,” she growled. “Have fun with – “ Elinor jerked her head toward her sister, “— that,” she smirked. “It helps if you literally pin her down, but seeing as she’s covered in her own blood…”She shrugged and mockingly pinched Calliope’s cheek. “Isn’t life a bitch?”
And then Elinor was gone as quickly as she had shown up, leaving behind a whirlwind of chaos that was typical for her, and so very Elinor.
“ Martina ,” Juliette whispered, walking around in a frenzied circle, suddenly hyper-aware of every snapping branch, every flutter of the owl’s wings that was circling above them.
“ Hugo ,” Juliette sputtered out, her fingers tangling themselves in her knotted hair, caked with sweat and dried blood.
“Come on, sweet little, it’ll be fun. ” Elinor’s sickly-sweet tone reverberated around in her eardrums, swirling around in the recesses of her memory. Synapses fired; a rush of dread filled the pit of her stomach.
“Ricardo, and…”
The buzzing in Juliette’s ears grew louder and she gritted her teeth together so hard she could taste blood . “ Carla .”
Martina.
Hugo.
Ricardo.
Carla.
Their names slammed into her brain over and over until they were a jumbled mess of incomprehensible letters.
Juliette shut her eyes and willed herself to calm down, digging her nails into her palms.
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
Over and over.
Only, it wasn’t working. Juliette could smell the saltwater of the ocean. She could hear the soft cries of the kids; hear Elinor’s snarky remarks.
“Are you sure you don’t want to play? It’s great.”
“No,” Juliette croaked out loud. “No, no, no.”
“Wanna go to Barcelona, sweet little?”
Juliette felt like she was going to throw up
“—-see, only a bit of blood.”
A shriek of pain. Hugo begging Elinor to stop . Martina pleading with her sister to just let them go.
“ Go ?” Elinor had cackled . “ Where exactly are a bunch of worthless street kids going to go?”
Slowly, the children’s cries faded. Elinor’s room slowly melted away, and she could no longer smell the ocean.
When she opened her eyes, Juliette realized she wasn’t back in Barcelona, but standing on a quiet, empty street with —
“Cal,” Juliette rasped, falling to her knees, not daring to even glance at her …her what? Girlfriend? Ex-girlfriend? Enemy , her mind taunted, in a voice that sounded so much like Elinor’s, Juliette could have sworn they had suddenly developed telepathy.
“Cal?”
As suddenly as Elinor had entrapped Cal and Jules and all but forced them to choose to kill or be killed, in a flash, Elinor was gone. Juliette left reeling after Elinor had snidely commented about a panic attack.
Julliette's eyes were blown wide, holding back tears, chest heaving from the effort of breathing. And after she was done gazing wildly around her, her gorgeous panicked blue eyes landed on Cal and said her name. The way Juliette said Cal's name was like the whisper of a soft warm breeze enveloping her.
When they had met that first day when, Juliette had awkwardly asked her why she went by Cal, Juliette had said her full name with such soft reverence. Calliope. It was a strong name, a name her mother chose for her, befitting of a person of untold regality. Cal secretly loved her name as she loved the Greek mythological tales from which it came.
She lifted her head to look at Juliette once more. To really look and see who she was, what she meant to her, all the epiphanies of the evening culminating in a desperate internal cry. Damn the people who said they weren't supposed to be together. This wasn't just love, fleeting and firey like that of Romeo and Juliet, doomed to separate sides of an ancient grudge. This was deep, abiding, adoration that wouldn’t leave.
Just as she had found from the moment their lips first touched, their eyes first met, Juliette made her feel like she could do what she wanted to do instead of what she was expected to do.
And what she wanted more than anything was to wrap this wonderful darling person in her arms and feel her against her chest. Show her what her heartbeat felt like when Juliette was around. So, she steadied herself after the blows dealt by Elinor and took the one thing that was healed and not bloodied of Juliette's, her left hand. Slipping her fingers between Julliette's caused Cal to let out a deep sigh of contentment. And she gently walked Juliette, beaten and bruised, torn and burned all over, to the next street and the next street and the next street. Until finally they were back at the school like that fateful night where they had first intentionally chosen each other, running across town trying to fight their fate marred by the expectations brought on by the fact of their legacies.
Juliette was used to going through the motions. In the darkest days of her depression, when she felt like she was swimming through murky waters, she kept her head high and her smile bright. Until she met Calliope and they’d had their fiery, whirlwind romance of teen angst and feuding families, only Ben saw her for who she is. Well, who she pretended to be, anyway.
So that’s what Juliette did now. She went through the motions. The motions of being led to the girls’ locker room and into a shower. She went through the motions of washing her hair, her body. She went through the motions of pretending her body didn’t scream in pain from the cuts, burn marks, and deep gashes left by silver.
At the hands of her own sister. It was like some mashup of The Twilight Zone and those cheesy LMN movies Ben liked to watch. Dark and sinister, with hidden undertones of forbidden love and betrayal.
And Juliette was only faintly aware of being led into the auditorium after she had lazily pulled on the spare clothes she kept in her locker. Someone had left a singular stage light on and it beckoned her forward. The stage was theirs.
“Thank you,” Juliette finally allowed herself to speak after the girls had sat down on the makeshift prop bed. Her throat was raw with pain; her voice soft like she was speaking in conspiratorial whispers behind cupped hands. “I — did she hurt you?” She reached out to touch Cal’s cheeks, but quickly withdrew her hand like she was a child who had touched a burning stove. “I mean, are you okay?”
Taking care of Juliette had come so easily to Cal. Her heart lurched and her stomach dropped when she got her undressed and into the shower. Juliette was covered head to toe in blood, oozing burns from the imprints of the coins on her skin. There were gashes on her ankles and her arms, and the stake wound where the hunter had attacked was like a fading memory on her skin, the hole it left closing up before Cal's eyes. Juliette was limp in her arms as she held her up in the shower, once the blood had been washed away. Her healing had made it so that no new blood came from the wounds.
So that once Cal got Juliette dressed and onto the bed, Juliette looked scarred and broken still, but the blood was wiped away. She barely had the energy to sit up but Cal could tell she was struggling to do so anyway. Especially when Juliette inadvertently went to touch Cal's face and pulled her arm away like the strike of a snake played backwards.
Her murmurs checking on Cal, voice gentle and whimpering, as she tried desperately not to touch Cal without her permission, even in the state she was in, had Cal's heart settling in contentment and pulling Juliette into her lap.
Finally she had her. Finally she could hold her.
Cal let her hands trail gently up and down Julliette's arms as she softly pulled her back against her chest, placing cherishing kisses on her head, reveling in her intoxicating smell once more.
She hushed Julliette's anxious murmurs again and began to bring her head down further to Juliette's neck, the place her lips always found. She kissed the nape of Julliette's pale neck, pressing her lips purposefully onto her skin, down to her back, riddled with healing scars.
Being here with Cal was intoxicating and she allowed herself to relax; allowed for her body to melt against Cal’s tender, delicate touches that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Goosebumps peppered her skin and when Cal’s lips found that sweet spot on her neck, Juliette let out an airy breath she hadn’t realized she had been holding.
It was only when she felt Cal’s soft hands reach for her right hip, that her eyes snapped wide open. “D-don’t!” Juliette grabbed Cal’s hand and scrambled away from her so fast she nearly toppled off the bed. “I - I mean,” Juliette swallowed thickly and moved closer to Cal, bringing her hand up to her lips to kiss gentle kisses on each knuckle. “I - um, I have….something. On my hip.”
Cal drew back in alarm as she watched Juliette attempting to separate them as quickly as possible. Did Juliette think this, them , was a bad idea? But then Juliette had assuaged her worries with tender kisses to her hands which she had grabbed and pushed away so forcefully only moments ago.
"Something?" Cal said, eyebrows raised in inquiry. She took in the fear etched on Julliette's face, looking like the beginnings of a panic attack she'd seen less than an hour ago.
She brought her hand up to cup her face and looked at her with all the adoration she felt within her. "Jules, you can... You can tell me anything... You know that?" She looked around at their surroundings, remembering the last time they were settled on this bed.
When we're together, all we have to be is Jules and Cal.
The memory whispered in the auditorium, wrapping them in its simplicity.
Cal spoke with measured breaths, her hands holding Juliette's in hers and resting under her chin as she had done that night. "Juliette, ancient grudges, dueling destinies, none of that matters. Remember. When we're together, all we have to be is Jules and Cal."
Anything ? “It’s —“ Juliette paused, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. The faintest hint of vanilla was still present on Cal’s skin, and the smell made her dizzy. She placed her left hand over Cal’s and sighed with content. Juliette wanted - needed to tell Cal about Barcelona. Six people knew what happened that night just two years prior. Six people knew. And four of them were dead.
Juliette had tried so hard to keep those awful memories at bay, to push them down far into the crevasses of her mind like she would crumble up an old paper in her backpack at the end of the school year. Talking about it meant acknowledging the depravity.
“All we have to be is Jules and Cal…”
The words were spoke with such sincerity; such love and tenderness that it made Juliette want to cry. It was then that Juliette knew she could talk about it. She could tell Cal her deepest desires, her most well-guarded secrets (besides the obvious), and that everything would be OK. They would be OK.
“I know,” Juliette swallowed. “ I — okay. You heard Elinor mention Bar —“ The word became stuck in her throat and Juliette felt like she had to reach inside her own mouth and yank out the word itself, as it desperately clung on. “—Barcelona, right?”
When Cal nodded silently and looked at her with earnest, Juliette took a deep breath and continued. “I – Elinor has this really sick obsession with me. She treats me like I’m her property ,” she spat the last word out with so much malice it surprised even her. “Two summers ago, she told me we were going on a trip together. To Barcelona, at our family’s summer home.”
The feeling of dread had already started to fester, and Juliette could feel her heart begging to race. “It wasn’t exactly a summer of exotic sightseeing and tourism.”
Cal let out a huff of exasperation. Of course anything to do with Elinor was not a regular vacation. Cal gathered Juliette into her arms again, but this time with Juliette facing her. "I can imagine." Cal said softly. "Well... I can't...but... Go on."
“She’s such a bitch,” Juliette scowled. Before she could second-guess her decision, the story came spilling out. Juliette talked about Carla - a beautiful, dark-haired girl she’d met her first week there - who had quickly become something more. Juliette told Cal about meeting Carla’s friends - Hugo, Martina, and Ricardo one hot night as the two got gelato. “I was really happy,” Juliette spoke quietly. “And Elinor couldn’t stand that.”
“So, one night, I went out to the market for supplies and….” Juliette shut her eyes, the memory easing its way into the forefront of her mind. “When I came back, she made me follow her into this…this underground basement lair, like she was fucking Batman or something.”
A pause. Juliette licked her lips. “And Carla. Our friends. They were…tied up in a row, like some trophy showcase, you know?” She huffed and gripped Cal’s hand. “She….she wanted me to feed from Carla. But I wouldn’t.” Tears prickled at the corners of Juliette’s eyes. “S-so she tied me to a chair using silver chains, and…forced me to watch as she drained the blood of every last one of them.”
Juliette’s tone had darkened by now, and she tightened her grip on Cal’s hand without realizing it. “She killed them all. A-and she collected their blood, in these small vials, like she was collecting samples for some research project..”
She exhaled through her nose, bile burning the back of her throat. “And then she - she used this….” Juliette pulled her hand away to touch the jagged scar on her hip. “- a red-hot, silver branding tool, to - to mark me. Four tally marks she somehow made to look like an ‘E.’” Juliette opened her eyes. “We threw the bodies in a canal. She told me that I belonged to her, that if I didn’t start living up to the Fairmont name, I’d be sorry. You saw how she tortured me with silver earlier. I - she did that a lot.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “I think she gets off on it,” she added darkly. “So, t-that’s what happened in Barcelona. Elinor still has those vials. She talks about it when we’re alone, like it’s something I need to be constantly reminded of.”
Cal had been staring wide-eyed at Juliette for the entire story, her hands squeezing tighter around Juliette 's anytime Juliette 's grip got stronger.
"Juliette. That isn't-- that isn't okay-- you know that right?" She drew Juliette 's head to her chest and let out a heavy sigh. "Jules, I want you to listen to me, okay. I want you to let me hold you right now while I tell you this. You did not deserve any of that. Your sister... Is a cruel and dangerous monster and she would be even if she were human. And I am so... so damn sorry you had to experience that." Juliette curled her head into Cal's chest and broke out in relentless sobs.

Chapter Text
Cal pulled Juliette ever closer. "No matter what happens, I'm here now. I know I'm supposed to be with you." Cal thought then of all the people she had been with, how nobody seemed to be her person until Juliette, a tiny traumatized feisty vampire. Let it never be said that love didn't have a sense of humor.
Then she thought of people that Juliette was not supposed to be with... Ben, that was obvious. But also this... Carla. What had drawn Juliette to her, she wondered? Would their love have been easier to keep afloat if Elinor hadn't callously cut it short?
Certainly it would have been much less complicated than a vampire and a monster hunter. She swallowed the tinge of jealousy in her throat and brought her hand to wrap around Juliette 's back.
“It’s the Fairmont way,” Juliette scowled, tone heavy with disdain and disgust. Juliette pressed a gentle kiss to Cal’s collarbone and shut her eyes. In this moment, the slow, steady beat of Cal’s heart was the most soothing sound in the world. “One time when I was nine, Elinor locked me in her closet for three hours because I —“ A disbelieving laugh escaped her lips and she shook her head. “— accidentally broke her favorite bottle of perfume. She was pissed. Wouldn’t let me out until I named every element in the periodic table. I was nine, Cal.”
Cal increased the pressure on Juliette 's shoulders as she held her close and rubbed her back. This poor girl needed a massage with all the weight she was carrying. She softly whispered against her ear, her lips brushing the edge of her earlobe, stopping to place an almost imperceptible kiss there.
"Shh, Baby, it's okay, you're safe now. I've got you." Juliette melted further into her, her lips coming to rest against Cal's chest where her heartbeat thrummed her not so hidden secret. She was beyond in love with this girl.
Juliette raised her head up to meet Cal’s eyes and brought a hand up, brushing soft locks of hair off her cheek. “Calliope Burns, I have never been more in love with anyone than I am with you. You know that, right? I love you. I am hopelessly, recklessly, and undoubtedly in love with you.”
Cal brought her hand to her face, pulling Juliette closer and taking the hand Juliette had rested there. "Juliette Fairmont, I know you can hear my heartbeat, you can tell when I'm lying and I'm willing to bet that you can tell... What you make me feel. But in case there is any doubt, come here." Cal stood up and pulled Juliette off the bed with her. "I want you to feel something." Cal enveloped Juliette in a hug so that Juliette 's face pressed close to her chest, not only able to hear her heartbeat, but to feel it. Not even just to feel it but to know it.
Juliette felt warm and soft against Calliope's chest, like she was home. Known and loved so deeply she could barely breathe with the joy that came from knowing how much this girl loved her. But it wasn't enough for Cal to know that Juliette loved her. She had to make sure that Juliette knew beyond the shadow of a doubt, Cal desperately, earnestly, undyingly loved her too.
"I know that things have been... hard," Cal began. "And I haven't been ready to face what happened. But when Elinor gave me that ultimatum, you or Theo, it was so clear to me. What you did to Theo wasn't... What I thought had happened. And maybe Theo doesn't want to stay a vampire and maybe he does. And I do, I do want my brother back." Cal fought against the tears beginning to form in her eyes.
"But Jules, I can't, I can't ever lose you. You are so much more important to me than you can imagine. I used to buy all that crap that I was bitten and you poisoned me to love you. Or well... I... tried to buy it... after we broke up." Cal sniffled against the sob trying to erupt from her throat.
"But Juliette, there is nothing poisonous about you. Nothing monstrous or cruel or even unkind. You are the most genuine person I have ever known. I want you in my life more than I care about duty or The Guild or my family's expectations. I need you, Jules. This isn't over. Not for me. Maybe, maybe it never was or even could have been over." Cal held Juliette tighter against her, her arms locking firmly against the small soft body that was nuzzling into her chest. "Because I love you. I love you so much more than Romeo loved Juliet or Calliope loved Apollo. So much more than the muses could ever dream of capturing in prose. And I will never stop loving you, Jules. Exactly. As you are.”
Juliette bit down hard on the inside of her cheek to keep her tears at bay. Ever since she was old enough to understand this whole vampirism thing, she had felt like a huge disappointment to her family. A shame to the Fairmont name. She didn’t fit in with her peers, except for Ben, and it was so hard. Calliope made her feel safe. Calliope made her feel cherished and loved.
I’ll never stop loving you either,” she croaked. Juliette wiggled out from under Calliope. “One second,” she murmured, pressing a quick kiss to Cal’s cheek. Juliette bounded over to a props chest and rummaged through it until she found what she was looking for. “I’m coming back!” she hollered over her shoulder.
As Juliette was making her way back to Calliope, she didn’t see the stray stool someone had left out, and tripped over it. Strong arms wrapped around her waist and jerked her upright. “S-sorry,” Juliette giggled. “I, uh, I’m not the most graceful person..” Juliette shook her head and opened her palm, where two, sloppily made rings constructed by the metal shop department. “I —“ she shrugged weakly and slipped one of the rings on over her left hand, before gently slipping the matching pair over Cal’s hand. Blue eyes burned into deep brown pools. “I know it’s nothing fancy, and these are super cliche, but I - I love you. Consider this a promise ring. I will always love you with my whole being. For an eternity.”
Cal raised an eyebrow at the cheesiness but her heart eyes belied how sweet she found the gesture to be.
"For eternity," she responded as she slid the other ring onto her own finger, softly pushing over the ridges of her knuckles down the bottom of her finger where it rested like it had always belonged there. "Hey, I've been meaning to ask... Is that ... is that like literally? Cause I have this pesky human lifespan and I was just curious... How long do I get to stay to love you? I mean... How long will you get to have me, will you be like a centuries old vampire pining over a long dead girl you met when you were 17? I want to love you forever but is that actually a thing for you? Cause... I gotta admit... I'm a bit jealous if it is."
“It’s a thing,” Juliette answered solemnly. “Ghosts can marry vampires. I mean, it’s not common, but it happens.” She grinned and pressed her lips to Cal’s in a brief, but loving kiss. “I have a question for you now.” Juliette leaned back and grabbed Cal’s hands, swinging their arms back and forth as she led them over to the bed. “Now, I might be wrong, but aren’t we supposed to consummate this?” Juliette sat down on the bed and patted the spot next to her. “Aren’t hunters supposed to always finish what they started?”

Chapter 5: Only One Way This Can End
Summary:
Maybe it was because Juliette was a vampire and some bite or be bitten concept had lodged itself in the back of her head. She certainly hadn't cared to neck with Tess. But Juliette's soft but angular slope, the muscles taught beneath her teeth, had her almost understanding why a vampire would want to bite a neck in the first place. Her heart thundered as she brought her lips to the other side of Juliette's neck, she let her teeth bite down softly and then a little firmer, making a desperate and delicious moan come from Juliette's open mouth, her head thrown back in complete ecstasy. When Cal licked a messy hungry stripe up the place where she had bitten, Juliette rolled her hips into Cal again, this time more firmly and with more urgency.

Cal giggled with the intensity of emotion that swept over her at Juliette's teasing lilt. She rolled her eyes good naturedly and let Juliette lead her to sit on the bed. "I've told you you're a bit bossy in bed, haven't I?"
"But you're right, Juliette. I'm a hunter. And there is only one way this is gonna end." Cal felt a sudden flutter of nerves at her own bravado and instead of going for it like her body had been begging her to every damn day since they had kissed in the pantry, she shyly pressed her lips to Juliette's and reveled in the softness and the sweet taste of her smile. Then she pulled back and just looked at her. Her eyes staring lovingly into Juliette's, with the same awkward smile she had shown her when Juliette had kissed her the first time. All desire and determination and hopes for consent. Cal took Juliette's hand in hers, splaying her hand across Juliette's then closing her fingers around each digit, and pulled Juliette in closer.
"Hi." She said in a nervous stutter. Remembering what it felt like for her when Juliette had looked her in the eye with that incredible smile and so soft and awkward said that exact same thing. "I've umm been wanting to do that for awhile now." Cal chuckled. "Really... For this entire time. All I've wanted was to kiss you, even when I was throwing things at my wall with all my pent up anger and pain, I just wanted to slam you against the wall and make you mine again."
"But. Now that you're here... I just want to feel you, to touch you absolutely everywhere.”
Juliette cracked a smile. Of course Calliope would throw things at her wall. She made a mental note to take Cal out on a date to one of those ‘rage rooms’ she had heard about. It would be good for Cal to let out some pent-up anger. It was a great idea. And not at all because Juliette knew, undoubtedly so, that Cal would look hot as fuck while doing so. “Everywhere? Juliette repeated, pursing her lips in mock thought. “Like where? I’m much more of a kinesthetic learner than an auditory learner, so you’re going to have to really show me what you mean..”
Cal smirked at Juliette's sexy tone. She was so damn cute it was ridiculous. "Well, I thought a lot about touching you here." She started, her hand coming up to cup Juliette's jaw, bringing her in for a kiss. Juliette chased her lips when she pulled away but Cal held up a finger.
"And I thought about touching you... Here." Cal teased as she moved her hands to feel the contours of Juliette's back, pulling her closer, her lips near Juliette's ear. She took it in between her teeth and breathily gave a soft tug, the hands on Juliette's back coming to rest firmly on her ass. "And of course here."
Juliette almost whined at the loss of contact, but it was swallowed completely by a groan emitting from her lips. Cal’s teeth on her ear sent shivers up her spine. “A-anywhere else?” Juliette breathed, inwardly cursing at the way her voice cracked. She ghosted her fingers up Cal’s back and around her shoulders, before slipping the tips of her fingers under the hem of her shirt. God. Juliette buried her head in Cal’s soft tresses and she inhaled deeply. “If there’s one thing that could kill me, it’d be your goddamn shampoo,” Juliette murmured in Calliope’s ear. “Your hair was the first thing I noticed about you. I really wanted to grab you and slam you against your locker.”
Cal smirked at Juliette's confession and leaned in to kiss her, feeling Juliette's lips move against her own put Cal in a bit of a daze. "Oh really, is that so? Well, the first thing I noticed about you was your smile. And even when it wasn't directed at me, I was mesmerized. I would've let you do anything you wanted to me, Juliette Fairmont. From the moment I laid my eyes on you."
"Even slam me against your locker and kiss me cause you liked my hair so much. Even practically fuck me in someone else's pantry. Even–"
“—fuck you on the prop department’s bed?” Juliette crashed their lips together, shoving Calliope back against the pillows and pinning her down with her legs, disappearing under Cal’s shirt. She pressed her hands flat against her abs. “Calliope Burns, I do believe you were sculpted by the Gods,” she mumbled against her lips. Her hands traveled up Calliope’s back and she paused at her bra strap, heart in her throat. “Can I?”
Having Juliette full force against her was something Cal never thought she'd have again and while she did have something else in mind for her sentence, she didn't mind Juliette's change. "Please." She answered timidly through ragged breaths, her lips desperately crashing back into Juliette's. She shrugged her shoulder in Juliette's direction, suddenly needing Juliette to do exactly what she was offering.
Juliette smirked and broke their heated kiss to discard Cal’s shirt and remove her bra. Her fingers trembled and she swallowed thickly, her gaze drinking in Cal’s torso. “I - wow,” she blushed, ducking her head. “You are so beautiful.”
Once again shy under Juliette's appreciative gaze, Cal brought Juliette into her lap, her hand splayed on Juliette's soft, strong thigh, thinking of the last time she had held Juliette's thigh so intimately. She lifted Juliette and brought her body closer so that her center was against Cal's torso. Juliette rolled her hips against Cal and let out a stuttering breath. A phantom crash of cherry jars came to Calliope's conscious. And she pulled desperately at Juliette's jacket, wanting to see her in the same vulnerable way Juliette could now see her.
"Jules, I-- can this-- all of this--come off?"
“Your wish is my command,” Juliette whispered. She made quick work of her clothes, fully aware of Cal’s eyes watching her every move. When she was fully nude, she sat back apprehensively on her heels. “I, uh, I think you’re overdressed,” she said teasingly, hoping - but knowing otherwise - that Cal wouldn’t pick up on the nervous tremor in her tone.
"Oh really?" Cal said with more confidence than she felt. "I guess I should do something about that." Cal slipped off her shoes, and slid her pants and underwear off as she brought a gorgeous naked Jules to the bed with her. Now they both could feel the recycled breeze of the auditorium and as Cal looked around at an overhead spotlight that had been turned off for the weekend, she couldn't help but think it was directed at the most beautiful thing in the room. Following its gaze, her eyes landed on Juliette's wonderful form. The soft slope of Juliette's breast had her heart doing somersaults and she knew that Juliette could absolutely hear it.
Juliette smirked. Cal’s heart was beating so fast and knowing it was because of her, was….enthralling. “Your heart is racing,” she said, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She would state the obvious. “I wonder what I can do to really get it going.” Juliette’s hands dropped under Cal’s breasts and she tentatively touched them. “This?”
Feeling Juliette's hand against her breast had Cal letting out a soft whimper that echoed through the auditorium. Of course now there would be an echo. Juliette smirked at Cal's noises and pulled her closer, her hand gently cupping her other breast, her nose coming to rest at Calliope's sternum. Cal's heart was definitely going. Especially since everything they were doing wasn't hidden by any clothes, or the tragically dim light of a stranger's pantry or a moonlit tree. Cal could see all of what Juliette was doing, her head nuzzling down to her breasts, experimentally taking a soft nipple between her teeth, so that Cal had to drop her head at the sensation, her head resting on Juliette's pronounced clavicle. Cal pressed her lips softly to the skin she'd settled into. Trailing kisses up Juliette's neck and finally doing what she had missed the most. Cal loved the taste of Juliette's neck, which she understood was an odd preference given that she was certainly not the expected neck biter of the relationship. But, oh she loved biting Juliette's neck.
"You really like when I bite your neck, don't you, Juliette?"
“Yes,” Juliette croaked throatily. She had only imagined Cal kissing her neck a dozen times while alone in her bedroom. There, she allowed her mind to wander and give way to her dirtiest fantasies. The reality of Cal kissing her neck again was so much more than she could have ever dared dream. Juliette brought one of Cal’s hands between her thighs, rolling her hips forward. “Please touch me,” she begged. Needing to keep her hands busy, Juliette cupped Cal’s breasts in each hand, thumbs swiping over taut nipples. Cal’s sharp moan in her ear only encouraged her, and Juliette gently pinched her nipples before rolling them beneath her palms. “You’re very excited, aren’t you, Miss Burns?” Juliette teased.
"Y-yes" Cal let out softly, the combined sensation of her nipples hardening beneath Juliette's fingers and of her own fingers touching Juliette's soft wet heated core causing her to stutter. She slid a finger into Juliette and was delighted to have it go right in. Juliette's walls clenching around her finger had her losing her breath at how wonderfully wet Juliette had gotten. How ready for her, just from how much Cal wanted Juliette. Cal felt a light trickle down her own thigh and pushed into Juliette with her fingers. Pumping in and out gently but firmly, her thumb coming to rest on Juliette's clit. This was nothing like the tree where she had last gotten to feel Juliette like this. The tree had been sudden, desperate, frenzied. This was slow, building, and so intimate.
The pure ecstasy coursing through Juliette’s veins was too much, and she threw her head back, hissing in pleasure as her fangs peeked out from beneath her lips.
“Fuck,” she growled, her voice low and almost animalistic. Haughty. “Calliope, you feel so fucking good. I need more.” Juliette’s words came out in a desperate, needy plea as she raked her sharp nails down Cal’s bare back, her fingernails leaving crescent-shaped marks in their wake.
Seeing Juliette's fangs in the light, so vulnerable and naked a representation of Juliette's passion had Cal wanting to finish the sentence she had started before. Juliette's clenching core getting wetter with each thrust, her moans becoming pitcher and hungrier. She drew Juliette's head to her neck and said what she had intended to say through shuddering breaths.
"Juliette... I... I want you to bite me."
Her memory flooded with the unbelievable sensation of Juliette sinking her fangs into her neck in the pantry, the smell of maraschino cherries in the air. It had followed a gentle hiss and Cal had been so distracted by Juliette's incredible lips and rolling hips that she didn't know it was happening until a fanged Juliette was sucking on her collarbone. But now, she wanted it, wanted it desperately.
“Mmhm?” Juliette mumbled, her eyes glazing over as Cal drove her fingers deep inside her. Then it clicked. “You want me to do what?” she gasped. “No, I can’t.”
The light in the auditorium was dim, but damned if Juliette couldn’t see the veiny pulse in Cal’s neck. It was like a shining light; blinking - pulsing - rapidly.
"Yes, Baby. You can." Cal responded in earnest. "I don't want you to do anything you're not comfortable with. But Jules, look at me." She lifted Juliette's chin so that their eyes could meet. Juliette had fear in her eyes, fear and hunger, and a soft sheen of lust.
"I want this. I know you won't go too far. You can't. It's impossible that you could ever hurt me. I know that now. You are not a monster. And you never will be. The things that have been done to you happened because you are good and people... they punish you for it. None of it has ever been your fault. Not Barcelona, not Hide N Seek, not even Theo.
You are not evil. I want you to bite me because I trust you with everything in me, Juliette.
And honestly, it felt amazing when you bit me in the pantry. And now that I know you, now that I trust you, I just know it will be incredible."
Juliette swallowed hard. She would be lying to herself if she said she hadn’t thought about it. “I love you so goddamn much,” she whispered. She stared at Cal for a second, silent consent surging between them, and dipped her head down, finally sinking her bare fangs into the warm - hot - flesh of Cal’s neck. To say that Cal’s warm blood gushing into her mouth felt like an orgasm of its own would be an understatement. It was an incredible feeling, and her eyes rolled back into her head as she sucked gently at the skin. She suddenly grabbed Cal’s hand, urging her to push her fingers into her deeper, harder as she thrust her hips toward, still suckling Cal’s neck. But she couldn’t stop. She craved every inch of Cal. Groaning, she pushed Cal flat against the bed, her own hand disappearing between Cal’s legs. Her fingers slid into her girlfriend as easily as her fangs had, and Juliette bit down a little harder. Not enough to cause pain, but enough to absolutely leave a reminder. “Fuck, Cal. Fuck, fuck, fuck.”
The duality of pain and pleasure swirled around Cal's head leaving her absolutely delirious. Nothing compared to this. Juliette's lip was soft against her carotid, her teeth piercing, her tongue wet and gentle. And when she sucked the place where her teeth had latched, Cal let out an insatiable moan. Juliette took the lead, pushing Cal onto the bed, grabbing Cal's hand and pushing her into her. Cal's thrusts went deeper and stronger into Juliette. Having Juliette's fangs suckling at her neck almost made Cal cum right there. But when Juliette slid a desperate finger into Cal, she lost all sense of the world around her. All she could feel was her walls fluttering against Juliette's long gentle fingers pushing harder into Cal, stroking her clit, her neck beginning to pulse even more strongly at all the sensations. Her world zeroed into Juliette and the incredible way she was worshiping Cal's body. In a way only she could.
Cal’s wet, slick folds pulsing against her finger, in time with her vein throbbing in her mouth, were almost too much to bear. So Juliette added a second finger. And then a third, rhythmically pumping in and out of her girlfriend. The mixed sounds of sultry moans, grunts, and wet suckling bounced off the auditorium walls. “Baby,” Juliette groaned. She pulled her head back, fangs disappearing back in her mouth. “I love you,” she murmured, pressing soft lips to her lover’s delicate skin. She licked her fresh wound, eyes fluttering open and shut. “Cum for me, baby. Please I need to taste all of you"
Once Juliette had added two fingers to the already intoxicating one, Cal could feel that she was close. But once she had said in that incredible sultry voice that she wanted to taste all of her, she couldn't have held back if she wanted to. The heated rush through her entire body was stronger when she looked up at Juliette through hazy post-orgasm eyes, Cal's blood leaking from her lips through an impish sexy smirk.
Juliette’s fingers were sleek with Cal’s orgasm and she slowly pumped her fingers in and out of her, easing her into riding out her orgasm. Then, without warning, Juliette dipped her head between Cal’s legs, dragged her tongue through wet folds, and back up again. She kissed her hard, sliding her tongue in her mouth so Cal, too, would taste all of herself, just as Juliette had. And it was easily the hottest, most erotic thing Juliette had ever seen. Or done. She lay against Cal’s chest, panting, but still kissing her, as if she were afraid to lose any sort of contact.
“Fuck, you’re so hot,” Juliette gasped against her lips. The ache between her legs was almost ravenous, and Juliette rocked her hips into Cal’s thigh, desperately seeking friction. “I’m so close, Cal. Please don’t stop.” This would be what killed her - a lack of physical release from the one and only person who made her feel intoxicated whenever she so much as smiled at her.
Juliette's head between Cal's thighs, her naked body spread out before her, was one of the hottest things Cal had ever seen in her life, until two seconds later when Juliette was kissing her with the taste of Cal's orgasm and blood on her tongue. The coppery taste of Cal's own blood coupled with the salty sweet taste her own orgasm, from the lips of the girl she loved made Cal absolutely ravenous. Keeping up her rhythm between Juliette's folds, she brought her head to rest between Juliette's thighs, placing a gentle but firm kiss on each of them as she brought her tongue to Juliette's center.
Juliette’s back arched off the bed. At some point during their lovemaking, one of them had tossed the blankets and pillows aside, and so Juliette found herself desperately digging her nails into the wooden bed frame beneath her. “Goddamnit,” she moaned, wrapping her legs around Cal’s head to hold her in place. “D-don’t you dare stop. I’m so close.”
"Wouldn't dream of it" Cal said slyly, bringing her tongue through Juliette's folds, relishing in the desperate pressure Juliette was putting on her head, her thighs squeezing tight against her, as Cal curled her fingers inside of her, placing feather light and then firm sloppy kisses all over her clit and down her dripping center.
And then Juliette was coming undone, her orgasm hitting her hard. She arched her back and brought her hips down full-force, Cal’s name erupting from her lips, echoing around the quiet auditorium. For a fraction of a second, there was the slightest creaking noise and then they collapsed into a pile of splintered wood and messy blankets. It took a moment for it to process and when it did, Juliette burst into hysterics, pulling Cal up and placing a lazy, tired kiss on her lips. Cal’s forehead was sleek with sweat. “I - wow. That was….wow. I think I literally felt the earth shift.”

Cal carefully took Julliette's hand, gently extricating her from the mess of the broken prop bed and sitting against the wall, bringing Juliette to lay her head against her chest while they sat in the afterglow of what had just happened.
Juliette nuzzled against Calliope’s neck. The faint scent of sex was still present in the air, and Juliette could feel Cal’s slowing heartbeat. “God, you can do such wondrous things with your mouth.”
"Oh you liked that, did you. I couldn't tell with your ridiculously loud screams of pleasure." She looked lovingly into Julliette's eyes and smiled cheekily.
Juliette rolled her eyes and propped herself up on her elbows. “Yeah, well…are you good to go again?” she asked. “I don’t think I was loud enough. I can do better.”
Cal suppressed a snort at Julliette's eagerness. "Jules, as much as I would love to do that again, shouldn't we deal with... Your bitch sister?"
Juliette groaned and flopped on her back. “God, I am so sick of Elinor,” she grumbled. The light above them was bright, and someone had left a pair of shoes tied to a raft. “She ruins everything,” Juliette continued, bile beginning to prickle at the edge of her throat. “When I was eleven and she was fifteen, do you know what she did?” Juliette didn’t wait for Cal to respond, instead she sat up, eyeing her girlfriend’s messy locks. A significant amount of hickeys lined the valley between Cal’s breasts, and Juliette had to suppress a smirk. “We were doing this training regimen one day, right? Hand-to-hand contact, sparring, hunting, all that stuff.”
Juliette blew a lock of hair out of her eyes and scrunched up her face. “She made me stand on one of those giant blocks of ice until my feet went numb. Said it would help to strengthen the soles of my feet so I could hunt barefoot. It’s quieter, you know? Anyway, I told her that I couldn’t feel my feet anymore. That I wanted to stop, and do you know what she said?” Juliette cleared her throat, “Oh, sweet little. The Fairmonts don’t give up. What a ridiculously stupid human notion,” she mimicked, capturing the snootiness of Elinor’s tone almost perfectly. “I wish she would die. But even then, I would never be rid of her. The only way to —“
Cal lifted her hand to Julliette's face and held it in a soft caress while she told her another traumatic thing that had been forced on her by her horrendous excuse of a sister. Much as all she wanted to do was figure out how to kill a Legacy, kill Elinor, she knew that Juliette would still be heartbroken even if all they'd had was dangerous trauma bond. Again, this wasn't Cal's choice to make.
"--What if-- what if we turned her human? Is that something that's even... possible?"
The realization hit Juliette like a freight train. Oliver. “Cal, you’re a genius. Oliver can turn Elinor into a human!” She surged forward and pressed a chaste kiss to Cal’s lips. “Thank you,” she mumbled before scrambling to her feet and dashing off, snatching her phone up as she did (and nearly tripping over her own feet in the process). “Oliver?” she said, as soon as her brother had picked up. “Oliver, we need to do something about Elinor. I have an idea.”
As quickly as Juliette had gotten up, Cal had barely been able to feel the softness of Juliette's quick kiss to her lips before she had already started the phone call with Oliver. Oliver gave her the creeps to a degree but she trusted Juliette and for whatever reason, he had answers about turning a vampire human? Seeing Juliette so excited after going deep down into her trauma yet again, was a welcome juxtaposition. This was apparently a very important moment. And Cal realized that Juliette having her best friend around could go a long way towards keeping up the momentum. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and found his number, which thankfully, she had never erased.
Ben was surprised, to say the least, when Calliope Burns’ name flashed on his screen. Juliette had cried to him for weeks after their breakup Even though Ben was all the way in California, he could practically feel the pain his best friend was in. For a while, he hated Calliope. But then, Juliette had texted him hours ago, saying something about how she and Cal had been talking again. And speaking of…
“Well, if it isn’t Calliope Burns, Georgia's very own Medusa. If looks could kill, babe.” He paused, noticing the background of the school’s auditorium. “Are you at the school?”
Cal settled a smirk on her face as she listened to Ben through FaceTime. But it slid off as soon as he questioned the background of their conversation.
"Uhh, yeah. We decided to crash here for a bit." Cal stuttered hoping that she was doing a good enough job hiding the splintered prop bed she and Juliette had passionately broken just moments ago.
Ben started to ask why the hell they would choose to sleep at school, but knew better. Feuding families be feuding. “Let me guess,” he groaned, walking through his kitchen to get a snack. “What’d Elinor do this time?”
Mouth agape, Cal just stared at Ben for a second. Jules had said they'd been best friends for like forever. She shook her head, bringing herself back to the moment. "Damn, how did you-- you know what... Nevermind. Elinor...well she..." Cal seethed and pushed her next words through gritted teeth.
"Asked me to kill Juliette and then she could turn my brother human?" She replied with an air incredulity that such a thing had been asked of her and by Juliette's *sister* no less.
“Oh, hell no,” Ben sank into a kitchen chair and propped his phone up. “That bitch needs to go down. She’s made Jules’ life hell for as long as I’ve known her.” At that moment, Cal shifted her camera and Ben caught sight of the now-broken prop bed. It looked like someone - or two someones - had been jumping up and down on it. “Sweetheart,” Ben jabbed a finger behind Cal, raising an eyebrow. “What happened to the prop bed?”
A flood of embarrassment heated Cal's body when she unthinkingly pointed her camera at the stage. She responded to Ben with a startled stutter that gave way to an attempted smirk as she tried to swallow her anxiety about someone, anyone finding out about the broken prop bed, especially with her and Juliette being there as the clear culprits.
"Juliette... Doesn't know her own strength. Recently accepted vampirism, you know?"
Ben opened and closed his mouth like a fish. No way had little Juliette Fairmont bedded her longtime crush at school, after hours, and had broken a damn bed. “Where is she? Let me talk to her. Now.”
"Well actually she's talking to her–"
“Now, Calliope!” Ben said, waving his hand in dismissal. There was a quiet muffling sound, and suddenly Juliette popped into view. “What, Ben? I was talking to Oliver about - why are you looking at me like that?” Meanwhile, Oliver waited impatiently on the phone until another voice was in his ear. “Cal. It’s nice to hear from you again,” he said earnestly.
"Hey...Oliver. Sorry I guess Ben really needed to talk to Juliette." Cal fidgeted with her fingers, picking at her nails. "For...whatever reason..." Cal trailed off, knowing damn well the reason Ben was demanding to see his bestie but also not the least bit interested in sharing that reason with Juliette's brother.
“Jules told me about Barcelona,” Oliver stated, getting right to the point. “I —“ His voice caught in his throat. “If I had just came back sooner. If I had checked in more often….” There was a pause, followed by the sound of glass breaking, and a resounding “fuck!” from the other Fairmont. “I’ve already spoken with my girl. We can turn Elinor into a human and finally take that shrew down. But I do need something from you, Calliope.” There was no playful edge to his tone, no words laced with dry humor. “My sister trusts you with her whole heart, so I do, too. Will you help us?”
Cal didn't miss a beat. "Absolutely" she said, her voice ringing with resolute confidence. "What do you need?"
“Elinor and Juliette’s relationship is…..complicated. It’s really fucked-up. Juliette hates Elinor as much as I do, but she still sees Elinor as her big sister. I know Jules has a lot of rage toward Elinor and I can absolutely understand why, but at the end of the day, they’re sisters. If Elinor tells Juliette to jump, Juliette will find a trampoline.” There was a brief pause on his end as he threw things together in a tote bag. “This is going to be difficult for her. I need you to get Juliette out of there for a while. Make sure she feeds. Do something to keep her distracted until we get there.”
Cal obviously wasn't going to share the something with Oliver that came to mind for his suggestion. Juliette's insatiable desire for her that she had expressed just before their respective phone calls was going to be difficult not to succumb to. But first, she'd have to make sure Juliette fed. Much as Cal had enjoyed Juliette's delectable bite during their incredible lovemaking, it hadn't been feeding exactly. And her body could handle some intensity, just not that intensity right now.
When Juliette finally hung up with Ben, who insisted on having to hear every last detail, she set her phone down and turned to see Cal watching her carefully. “What?” she asked, arching an eyebrow. “Ben is nosy. He needs details.” She sauntered forward and wrapped her arms around Cal’s neck, nuzzling her face against her chest. “Oliver is going to help us. Can we have sex again now?” Juliette glanced up, meeting Cal’s eyes. “I promise I won’t break any more furniture,” she giggled.
"Somehow I don't believe you." Cal responded, her voice low and sure as she brought her head down to Juliette, their lips meeting in a soft, deep kiss. "But, I would absolutely love to have sex again."
Juliette grinned and hiked a leg around Cal’s waist, her hand disappearing between her legs. Her fingers traced lazily circles on her inner thighs. Suddenly, a wave of nausea overcame her and she frowned. “Whoa,” she mumbled. She blinked rapidly and her vision refocused. “I - sorry. Got a bit dizzy. Now, where were we?”
Cal's breath hitched at Juliette's touch but when she seemed to be very hungry and not in the way a quickie would require, she pulled her up onto her feet and looked her in the eye. "Jules, please baby, you really need to eat."
Juliette smirked. “I’m trying, if you’ll let me,” she whispered, crushing their lips together in a bruising kiss. “I’m absolutely famished.”
Cal could feel the determined vampire about to collapse in her arms, and let out a good natured chuckle. "Juliette. Go feed, you dork."
“Fine,” Juliette groaned, sounding much like a child who had been told to go to bed. “I’ll go feed, but you owe me.” She reluctantly broke away from Cal and hastily pulled on her clothes. “Wait,” Juliette paused with one leg in her jeans. “You want me to go feed?” She eyed her girlfriend cautiously, pulling up her jeans fully and shrugging into her shirt. “Why?”
"Because you're falling over, Juliette." Cal said emphatically, her hand coming to rest firmly on Juliette's shoulder. "And I understand. This is what you need, Baby. It's who you are. And like I said, there is nothing wrong with who you are."
Juliette sighed. “You’re a really empathetic asshole, did you know that?” She slipped into hers-but-really-Ben’s varsity jacket. “I’ll be back. You want anything?” she asked with a wry smirk.
"You know, I do have a strong preference for one specific neck but am not all that interested in trying any others. But you do you, Babe. Get your fill, I know you'll do what is safe and good. Just make sure you bring yours back for me. I want to see if I can leave some good marks sometime. I'd like to... Return the favor." Cal said as she gestured at her chest, covered in soft red hickeys against her dark skin.
Juliette raised an eyebrow, studying Cal carefully. She knew she was right, after all. But there was the tiniest tinge of nervousness to her tone. Indiscernible to the human ear. “You’re acting weird,” she said, her tone much more of a statement than a question. “Your voice lowers, like, a centimeter of a pitch when you’re nervous.”
"I um really do like your neck. And I don't understand you know, the blood thing myself. But Juliette, I've, I've seen you feed. You looked like you'd had your thirst quenched after a thousand years of being entirely parched. And... You did it to save my life and Ben's. I may not ordinarily be chill about any other vampire feeding, and maybe I need to learn more to get to a point where I do... But you have to feed. You'll need your strength, at least to take down Elinor."
"And if sex is gonna be on the table later, you're gonna need some stamina. Though, careful babe, if we do it on a table, you might break it too. New vampire strength and all."
“You’re so annoyingly smart,” Juliette huffed. Her lips spread into a smirk. “Sex is definitely on the table later. I’ll be back, okay?” Juliette gave Cal a quick kiss before dashing out of the auditorium and out a back door.

Chapter Text
Cal breathed a sigh of relief when Juliette was finally out the door. Now she could proceed with the plan.
Ten minutes later, Oliver bounded into the auditorium, his girlfriend trailing lazily behind him. “Calliope!” He threw his arms up and enveloped her in a quick hug. “Nice to have a hunter on our side.” He nodded to his girlfriend, who began pulling various potions and bottles out of the tote bag. “Now…”
Oliver walked around the stage, briefly glancing at the broken bed, but deciding not to comment. Good for you, sis. He motioned for Calliope to follow him. When they were far enough from listening ears, he turned to Calliope and gently gripped her hands. “Theo is well,” he smiled brightly. “He sends his regards. He’s adjusting well. You know, he’s one of the few human-turned-vampires who has retained quite a bit of his humanity. Talks of you often.”
Cal felt the pricks of tears starting in her eyes. She hadn't even considered that Oliver would know anything about Theo, that anyone would. "That's really ... amazing." She choked out. The thought of Theo, vampire Theo retaining his memories of her, of dad, of Apollo, of Mom had Cal trying to stealthily wipe away tears. "Oliver, when this is all over, can I -- can I see him?"
“I insist on it,” Oliver smiled, gently patting her hand. “Now, this is a lengthy process. It’s not fun. It’s very painful. It’s irreversible. So, once a Legacy is turned human, they can never be turned back into a vampire.” Over at the table, what’s-her-face was mixing up a thick, smoky potion. “Did you ever see Disney’s Hercules? Same idea. Elinor has to drink this entire potion, and poof! Her vampirism will be gone as easily as my parents forgot they had a son.”
Cal winced when she heard that the process was painful, glad she had decided to defer to her brother about using it on him. There was only one being in the entire universe she wanted to experience that level of pain. Elinor fucking Fairmont.
“Babe, almost done?” When Carmen nodded and winked at him, he rubbed his hands together in delight. “Oh. Er, one more thing. You and my girl over there will have to physically restrain Jules. I know Jules. You know Jules. When she sees how much pain Elinor is going to be in, she’s going to have this emotional turmoil and want to stop it. But….” Here, Oliver’s tone turned sharp. Firm. “She cannot get any of this on her person. She certainly can’t drink any of it. If this stuff gets on her skin, Jules will get very sick. It’s like antifreeze poisoning for vampires.” He placed a steady hand on Calliope’s shoulder. “Juliette can’t get near this stuff, okay? Especially as a newly-feeding Legacy who hasn’t been bitten by the damned snake. We don’t know what else it can do to her. I can’t go near it. Keep. My. Sister. Safe. Okay?”
Cal nodded solemnly. Her jaw clenching at the thought of what could possibly happen if she failed. "I'm trained to wrestle vampires." Cal said seriously. "I won't let, can't let anything happen to her. I will always, always protect her."
“I know,” Oliver replied earnestly. “Jules really loves you, you know that, right? She really does.” He stooped down a little so their eyes would meet. “And you’re family now, alright? No matter what your parents say. Definitely pay no mind to what my folks say. You’re family. And I got you.”
At this point, maybe she should've been used to being loved by Juliette Fairmont, but the novelty of that truth still didn't fail to amaze her. That this kind gentle person wrapped up in the body of a cute and snarky vampire wanted her, loved her, was a kind of wonderful irony of which Cal could never grow tired of being reminded.
Maybe it was the freshness of learning that Theo was alive and well, and asking about her, or the beautiful fact that she and Juliette were together again, but Cal was feeling a bit sappy. "Thank you, Oliver, for everything. For being such a good brother to Juliette, for taking in Theo." Cal spoke through gentle sobs. "For everything that's about to happen. I really love your sister, like deeply, truly, I tried hating her when she turned Theo. But, I never stopped loving her. And, I never will."
“Careful, dear brother. You’re starting to sound nauseatingly human..” Elinor’s voice rang out from the auditorium doors. Oliver turned, clearly surprised to see her. Shit. He had been so focused on comforting Cal and making sure she understood the ramifications of what they were about to do, that he didn’t hear her come in.
“Dearest Elinor.” Oliver tilted his hands up in a faux welcoming gesture. “Cal here was just catching me up on what Juliette has shared with her. A girls’ trip to Barcelona and you didn’t invite me?” He pursed his lips, moving to stand protectively in front of Calliope. “I’m hurt.”
“Yeah,” Elinor’s lips twisted into a sly grin. “Wanna see what I found outside?”
Oliver was of course no stranger to Elinor's mind games, he had had his own run ins with her terrifying levels of calculating and manipulation. Losing Mr. Green, at his own hand, and at Elinor's prodding had never left his mind for long. He had loved that turtle. And like everything Elinor deemed unworthy of her attention, a thorn in her side, she had gotten in his head, whispering about its worthlessness, and convinced everyone that he had killed of his own volition. Not one to scapegoat, Oliver did recognize his hand in all of the violence. But Elinor was at the center of all of it. Learning what she had done to Juliette in Barcelona was the last straw. Elinor needed to pay for her cruelty.
He gently touched Cal's arm, looking her in the eyes in hopes of communicating that he had her back. And when she responded with determination and trust in her eyes, he strategically placed her behind him and nodded solemnly at Elinor. Following her out the door, winking and gesturing to Carmen to continue the work. She would have done it anyway, Oliver knew. But her eyes said she understood and that she loved him. Honestly, Oliver could drown in those eyes. Mysterious, vibrant, sexy. In all his life he had never known love could feel so right.
The chilly night air felt cool against Elinor’s cheeks. The bright light of the moon almost illuminated the tattered, shredded jacket on the ground. Soaked in blood. “Think Ben will be upset?”
Cal's eyes widened at the sight of Ben's jacket drenched in blood. What did this even mean? Where was Juliette? Elinor looked so menacing with the smirk on her face. Had she figured out a way to kill Juliette herself? The thought made Cal's stomach lurch. No, no, she reassured herself, if Elinor could have killed Juliette, she never would have asked Cal to, unless that was one of her games. Knowing how to kill Juliette and being capable of it but asking the girl Juliette loved to do it instead? One last twisted evil thing to fuck up poor Juliette's psyche. The thought infuriated her and she clenched her fists, leveling Elinor with a glare.
"What exactly are we looking at?" She asked tersely.
"What is your angle, Elinor?" Oliver eyed her incredulously, his heart in his throat at the thought that once again his evil twin had bested him.
Elinor smiled placidity. “Who said I had an angle? I’m kind of insulted, Oliver. I thought you had put your silly accusations behind you. She turned to Cal and met her eyes, surveying her carefully. “You know that deep down, Juliette is a monster, don’t you? She will never be normal. Never really be able to love you. At least not in the way you want.”
This bitch. Honestly Cal didn't even understand what Elinor was getting at. Couldn't love her the way she wanted? No one had ever loved her as deeply, as earnestly, as unendingly as Juliette Fairmont.
To hear Elinor, a monster herself, indicating that Juliette couldn't love? It would've been laughable if it didn't piss Cal the hell off. But, she knew this was a game to Elinor. And she had to play.
"You think-- you think I want her to love me? That creature turned my brother, used me and broke my heart. She is a special kind of monster. Not like you, Elinor. You're exactly what it says on the package. Strong, fierce, cunning," predictable, Cal thought to herself. "You are the type of creature I was taught to hunt, the powerful creature I was taught to kill. Juliette, Juliette seems a pathetic excuse for a monster, but she still managed to turn my life inside out and upside down with her monstrous behavior." Cal almost winced at her own words. As she let out the poison that had sat in her heart since she and Juliette had broken up. She didn't believe these words anymore, not even a little bit. But she had to play this game. She had to make Elinor believe she was on her side. Heart racing, she continued to inflate Elinor's ego, hoping that she wasn't quite as attuned to her heartbeat as Juliette always was.
Oliver watched silently as Cal sang his twin sister's praises by deriding Juliette. It would've hurt if he had believed she meant it. But he had seen the glow in her eyes when they had talked about Juliette. It was the same look he got talking about Carmen. This girl was gone for his baby sister but, like the hunter she was, she was also cunning and clever. He made sure to keep his face stony, then a bit more disbelieving as Cal derided his sister and their kind even further, heaping praise on Elinor's head despite their natural orientation as enemies. But the fact was, this was the girl he had heard about as Theo collapsed on the couch after merciful hunts (Oliver had taught him how to feed without draining) night after night. Regaling Oliver and Carmen with tales of his resourceful, brilliant sister Calliope.
Well then. Elinor hadn’t been expecting this. At least, she hadn’t expected Cal to turn so easily against the supposed love of her life. “Tell me, Calliope. Did Juliette whine to you about Barcelona? Did she play the victim card?” She crossed her arms over her chest, eyes flittering between Calliope and her brother. “Neither of you realize how manipulative dear Juliette is. She has both of you wrapped around her fingers, doesn’t she?” She paused, tilting her head to the side in thought. “Let it never be said that Juliette Fairmont didn’t act like a victim every chance she got.” Elinor reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, circular item, dangling it in front of Cal’s face like a fisherman dangled a worm to lure it to its line. Juliette’s ring. “I bet she sobbed while she told you about Barcelona, huh? Did she weep and shudder? Did she tell you that she begged me to get rid of those bastard kids, because she couldn’t do it herself?”
Everything Cal knew about Juliette told her Elinor was lying. But was there some way that she had been, even slightly, complicit? The only way Juliette could do something like that was...as a mercy killing, that she couldn't do herself.
Oliver knew both his sisters quite well, much to Elinor's chagrin. And, despite his hatred for his twin, he knew it wasn't as simple as Elinor being the cruel manipulator to Juliette's powerless victim. He narrowed his eyes at Elinor and raised an eyebrow. She had tells when she was lying and he didn't see any of them.
Elinor dropped the ring into Cal’s palm, eyes never leaving her face. She could practically smell the fear prickling; the uneasiness crawling in. “Did Jules tell you her favorite part of Barcelona?” She leaned in until she was so close to Cal she could see the moon’s reflection in her eyes. “It was when her sweet little Carla died. When the life drained from her eyes. It was almost….unnerving. Like something had awakened inside her. Something of which you will never comprehend.”
Cal let her mind drift back to Juliette, the scar Elinor had given her for that day. How deeply upset she had seemed over the whole thing. That was a panic attack and it was about losing those lives. Cal had seen it in Juliette's eyes. Juliette was terrified over Barcelona. But, No matter what misgivings Cal had about things with Elinor's revelation, she had made Oliver and Juliette a promise. She would keep Juliette safe no matter what. She could not let her facade crack in front of Elinor.
“That’s not what happened and you know it,” a voice from the shadows said. All three of them turned to see Juliette standing there. There were twigs in her hair and a smear of blood on her right cheek. She looked frazzled, like she had been running nonstop. She took a step closer, her gaze bouncing back and forth between her siblings and Cal. “I - I’m sorry,” she croaked, her eyes finally stopping on Cal. “I - I didn’t - i was so afraid that if you knew —“
“Sweet little, I never knew you could be so incoherent, but I guess that’s what happens when you spend all your time around humans.”
Juliette didn’t bother to glance at Elinor, but she did respond by holding up her middle finger. Her eyes never left Cal’s. There was a silent understanding between them. Juliette felt so connected to Cal that she knew Cal would understand. Words didn’t need to be spoken. “—but now I’m glad you know the truth. Part of the truth, because…” she broke off, glancing at Elinor. “You were right,” she whispered. “It was stupid of me to fall in love with a human.”

Chapter Text
Cal took Juliette's words like a lance to the chest, her stance still ready for a fight. Did, did she just hear Juliette right? But then she caught Juliette's eyes and saw the safety in them, the gut-wrenching earnestness of her beautiful gaze. Juliette had a plan. She had to.
“Well, you finally pulled your head out of your ass long enough to see the truth, huh?” Elinor tut-tutted. “What have I always told you?” Juliette sighed in resignation. “That you’re always right. I’m sorry. I won’t question you again, okay? Let me get my stuff and we can go. It’s in the auditorium”. Juliette stalked past her brother and Cal, sparing the briefest of glances at Oliver, and just barely grazing the tips of her fingers across Cal’s left hip.
If there was anything Oliver knew about Elinor it was that she was a haughty and manipulative person who had one blindspot. Her siblings. As viciously cruel as she was towards Oliver, towards Juliette, it never ceased to amaze him how incredibly convinced Elinor seemed to be that she was untouchable. Powerful parents and and even more powerful vampiric abilities had a rather spoiled Elinor thinking she was above consequences for her actions. Oliver, however, knew better. Though his own actions had been somewhat compelled, Oliver had tasted the pain of consequence and the crushing realization that there was a limit to what he could do and still have the love of his family. Elinor had once again forgotten that her siblings were formidable when they were angry. And, as resigned as Juliette's words seemed, the glimmer in her eye told him she had something more up her sleeves. Good for you, Baby Sister, you're far more than Elinor knows is coming.
Juliette just giving up and going with Elinor threw Cal at first. But the small reassuring brush of Juliette's fingers on her waist reminded her that Juliette was stronger than she often let on and Elinor, as always, was very... predictable in her backstabbing and cruelty. Cal and Oliver followed the two sisters into the auditorium and awaited an inevitable showdown.
Inside the auditorium, Carmen sat drinking a glass of wine. In fact, two more glasses of wine were perched upon a table. She had long since put away her materials and simply sat. When the group marched into the auditorium, Carmen met Oliver’s eyes over the rim of her glass, taking a long, slow sip. For months, Carmen had heard nothing but horrid things about Elinor Fairmont. How she treated Oliver as kids growing up, how she was a manipulative, cunning, and admittedly so - smart - bitch. When Oliver had told her, words dripping with absolute disgust, about Barcelona, the two had concocted a plan to bring Elinor Fairmont down once and for all, in a fate worse than death. “Carmen,” Elinor raised an eyebrow. “Pleasure. At least one of my siblings has a little bit of common sense, and is dating a much more comparable partner. “
Juliette bristled, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. “Elinor, can, for once, just not?”
She sauntered up the stage steps and sank into a wooden chair, pressing her fingers roughly against her temples. “I can’t believe now naïve I was,” she said slowly, opening her eyes and fixing her gaze on Cal. “I trusted you. I - I gave you everything.”
Cal eyes widened in fury at the accusation, but something in those soft blue eyes remained so trustworthy and real that she knew Juliette couldn't think that. Staring into her eyes was becoming Cal's own lie detector to Juliette's ability to read her heartbeat. She whirled around rather theatrically but her voice was steady and firm.
"Everything? You gave me everything? What about what you took away? What about Theo, Juliette?"
Oliver sidled up next to his girlfriend with a slight grimace. The girls needed to hash out their issues. And who better an audience than his gullible twin sister who truly believed she was unable to be overcome by their weak younger sibling. He shook his head lightly. Oh, Elinor. You just never learn do you?
Ouch. That had stung a bit. “Maybe Theo is happier being a vampire,” Juliette snapped. “Did you ever think of that? Theo doesn’t have your stupid human limitations anymore!” She shot to her feet, nostrils flaring. “And yes, I did give you everything.” Elinor leaned back against a wall, crossing her ankles. Well. This was fun. Unexpected, but oh so fun. “I told you never to trust a human,” she chimed in flatly. “And now look. She broke your fragile heart. Poor baby sister.”
"Happier?" Cal spat. "How could he be happier when he is exactly the thing he was taught to hate, Juliette? Trained to kill? A creature just like you killed his mother. Do you understand the grief and brokenness that happened to him from that? Are you even capable of feeling anything?"
“Oh, cry me a fucking river,” Juliette snorted, taking a careful, measured step toward Cal. “Poor Theo lost his mother. Because he’s the only one in the whole fucking world who has ever lost anyone, right?” Juliette dug her nails into her palms. She was so angry. But not at the person she was screaming at. She could hear Cal’s panicked heartbeat. In reality, all she wanted to do as rush forward, cup Cal’s face between her hands, and pepper her with kisses. “I’m a lot more capable than you think. Poor little Juliette, always needing to be rescued, isn’t she?”
Elinor let out a low whistle of approval. Damn. Sweet little had finally cracked, and she was absolutely thrilled she could bear witness. But alas, she had things to do. “Are you two done?” she pushed herself up off the wall with her foot. “This kind of drama can only be amusing for so long.”
Cal knew now that Theo was safe but that didn't mean she wasn't angry about the words being sent her way. If Juliette had meant them, that is. But when Elinor had the audacity to interrupt with her bored tone and bitchy attitude, Cal had had enough. "Sit down, bitch." She said through gritted teeth, her eyes filling with furious fire from the boiling rage Elinor was stoking. "This is between me, and your sister. You need to butt the fuck out." She exclaimed, punctuating each word with a firm finger to Elinor's chest.
Elinor glared at Cal, rage slowly seeping through her veins. “What did you just call me?” she spat. “My hearing is excellent, but I know you didn’t just call me a bitch.”
“Sounds like she did,” Juliette piped up, eyeing her sister and Cal carefully.
"You heard me, bitch. Loud and clear." Cal leveled her eyes at Juliette, making sure Elinor was watching. "But you, you're this bitch's pet. And you will always answer to her because you are too weak to make your own damn decisions." Cal took a breath to say her next words. *Even turning Theo wasn't your decision. According to you, he asked for it. What a ridiculous excuse for a vampire. Theo is turned because you have no backbone." She lowered her voice and her gaze, heart racing. "Barcelona wasn't just Elinor you know. You're not clean and blameless. You are the pet to a monstrous bitch and I'll bet... You just did what she told you to do. Like a fucking little lapdog."
Juliette felt like the air had been sucked out of her lungs. A tiny part of her knew that there was some truth to Cal’s words. She wasn’t blameless. Maybe she was a little weak. Her heart dropped into her throat and she opened her mouth to speak when Elinor beat her to the punch.
“Wow,” Elinor snickered. “See, Juliette? I told you Cal wouldn’t understand. I do like her comparison though. A lapdog. Maybe I’ll even get you a collar, so you will really be my bitch.”
And then - just like that, all of the anger, hatred, and pure rage Juliette had been harboring for her sister came undone. She forgot about their plan as she rounded on Elinor. Shut the fuck up!” she snarled. “Just shut your goddamn mouth for once in your life. I am so sick of hearing you talk!” Juliette took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself down, but she was so enraged her hands were shaking. “I am not your fucking lapdog! Ever since the day I was born, you have made my life a living hell!” Juliette grabbed the closest thing to her - which happened to be a wooden framed picture of the school’s cast - and hurled it at the floor. It shattered at her feet, glass shards scattering across the floor. “Juliette, do this. Juliette, do that. I am so tired of being told what to do, all the time!” Her hands flew to her hair and she raked her fingers through it, willing herself to just calm down. But she couldn’t stop. The rage just kept coming. “Remember when you locked me in the closet when I was nine!” Juliette let out a disbelieving laugh. “I was nine, you sadistic bitch. You wouldn’t let me out for three goddamn hours”
A fake plant was flying out of her hands before Juliette had even registered that she had grabbed it, nonetheless thrown it. “When I was seven, you thought it would be hilarious to hold me over the bannister until I begged for you to put me down.” Juliette was painfully aware that four pairs of eyes were on her. She could hear the racing pace of Cal’s heart; Carmen’s shallow breathing caught in her throat.
“And Barcelona?” Juliette shook her head, throwing her hands up. “Barcelona was the icing on the goddamned cake, wasn’t it?” She took a careful step toward her sister, adrenaline coursing through her veins. “I am so tired of you. You’re a sadistic, remorseless little cunt who will never, ever even have an ounce of empathy for anyone but herself!” Juliette was breathing hard. Her hands were shaking so bad she couldn’t control them. Her eyes snapped to the wine glasses on the table and darted forward, grabbing one around its neck and throwing it in Elinor’s direction. “You think I’m some fucking plaything, don’t you?” she snarled, charging forward with a shard of glass. “You think you have some hold over me? That I’ll bend to your every whim?” Juliette shoved Elinor back against the wall. “What is it with you? You’re obsessed with your own sister,” she spat, shoving her again. “You’re disgusting. If I didn’t know any better, I would say that you’re in love with me, but we both know you’re incapable of loving anyone but yourself.” Juliette took a step back, swallowing hard. She was so angry she couldn’t see straight. “Fuck you, Elinor. I wish you would just fucking die.”
Watching Juliette's violent hatred towards her sister had Cal's heart in her throat. She knew, didn't she? She knew everything she had said was an act? A blown up version of emotions she had once felt? But when she began throwing things and accusations at Elinor, Cal knew this was long overdue. Oliver had watched the argument with rapt attention from the start, his face settled in a bored and annoyed grimace. But once it got to the level it had, he knew he needed to step in finally.
He gently wrapped his fingers around the bottle Carmen had hidden under the table in her hands, brushing her fingers softly and stepped over to his sisters, ready to break up any fight ready to break out.
"Enough!" Oliver hissed, his fangs pushing down from his gums. "Elinor, you just never know when to quit, do you?" He wrapped his arm encouragingly around a frazzled and angry Juliette, her fierce hatred not remotely soothed by his touch. He stealthily switched the bottle into her hand, patting her back gently and looking into her eyes in an attempt to at least let her know he still had her back, even if she absolutely lost it. The Fairmonts may not have known how to choose family over stature but Oliver did and he loved his baby sister more than anything.
Elinor shrugged carelessly, her eyes fixated on her little sister. It took nearly eighteen years, but the dam had finally broken. “Oliver,” she said, her tone curt. “This doesn’t concern you.” Elinor eyed the mess Juliette had created in amusement. “See, Cal?” Elinor’s eyes snapped to Calliope. “See all this rage sweet little has inside her? You should have taken her out when you had the chance.”
The bottle pressing into Juliette’s hands did nothing to stifle the rage that continued to build inside her. “Don’t talk to her.'' She growled. “Don’t you dare breathe another word in her direction, you got that?”
"What," Elinor guffawed, "the hunter? Oh Sweet Little, she is literally trained to hunt and kill you. You always go for the unattainable don't you? Always have to be so special. You need to be loved. Need to be different. You won't feed from humans, which is what you literally have to do to survive, you fall all over yourself to please our parents. But Sweet Little, you dumb little nobody, don't you see nobody gives a shit about you. You almost got our dad killed, if it wasn't for my cunning. You are reckless and stupid and absolutely dangerous for our family and our way of life. And you need to be put down. Humans don't give a shit about you. Least of all, Cal. She hates you, Juliette. Hates our kind. Isn't it obvious? You should be able to smell the fear on her but you always were the weakest vampire alive, of course you never tuned in to some of our more efficient abilities. I use it to track my prey. Because that's what humans are, Juliette. They only are and will ever be, prey. You are a predator, Juliette. And if you don't start acting like one. I will have to put you out of your misery.”
All Juliette could see was red. The only sound she could hear, even above Cal’s heartbeat, was the blood rushing in her ears. She wasn’t even aware she had leapt toward Elinor, until she had slammed into her and brought the two of them crashing to the stage floor. “You fucking coward,” she snarled forcing Elinor’s mouth open and trying to shove the tip of the bottle down her throat. “Choke on this, you soulless wench!” And then she was shoving the bottle as far down Elinor’s throat as she could. The thick, black-colored liquid gushed from the bottle and down Elinor’s throat. “DRINK IT,” she screamed, pushing Elinor’s head back so the liquid would be forced down her throat. Juliette was so enraged, she didn’t notice some of the liquid had seeped out and was trailing down the neck of the bottle, dangerously close to her hands. All she cared about was making Elinor suffer for all the shit she had put her through for the past eighteen years. “I hate you,” she seethed. “I hate you, I hate you. I hate you.”
Cal had seen Oliver slipping the bottle to Juliette from behind Juliette's back. He stepped away, giving her a nod. It was almost time. She was on high alert for the moment she would need to protect Juliette from the liquid as she had promised Oliver. As she had promised herself. But that moment came so much faster than anticipated as Juliette flew into an absolute rage and shoved the bottle literally down her sister's throat. The trickle on the bottle caught Cal's eye and she didn't allow herself time to imagine if Juliette was human. Remembering the pain Oliver had described if it were ever to touch a vampire. She lunged for Juliette like a hunter for its prey and grabbed the bottle from Juliette as swiftly as possible, the drip falling onto her own hand as she gripped it, taking it away.
When Oliver had slipped the bottle to Juliette, he had anticipated a bit more of a slow approach for her attack on Elinor. But his little sister was always full of surprises. And apparently so was Cal, even though he had trusted that she was invested in this, in protecting his sister, he had been terrified, and given their ruse he hadn't been able to tell Juliette to be careful with the liquid. He was kicking himself for giving it to her on a whim like that instead of the way they had planned, when Cal lunged for the bottle and stole it from Juliette's hand.
“Let go!” Juliette screamed, thrashing about in Cal’s strong arms. The liquid - whatever it is - was working, because Elinor let out a scream so horrendous, so full of raw pain, that the sound of it caused Juliette to go limp in Cal’s arms. She hated Elinor. She really, truly hated her, but…. Juliette’s eyes darted from the smashed wooden frame to the broken plant and back to Elinor thrashing, practically convulsing, on the floor in agony. The rage. The anger. Juliette hadn’t been able to stop herself. Hadn’t been able to think. “E-Elinor?” Juliette struggled to get out of Cal’s grip. Maybe she really and undoubtedly was a monster at heart. “S-stop!” she rasped. “I- changed my mind! Stop!”
“Jules,” Oliver’s voice was firm, but a tinge of fear leaked through. He hadn’t expected the act to be so brutal either. “I-It’s okay. Just let it happen.” He nodded to Carmen and together, they held Elinor down, Oliver at her feet, and Carmen at her head.
Cal replaced Juliette's hand with her own, shaking off the sting of the liquid. She winced as it flew onto Elinor, making a dark mark against her face. Elinor's scream at the contact was gut churningly anguished. As she held the bottle in Elinor's shuddering mouth, the tears falling down her face mixing with the elixir, she held Juliette, collapsed and sobbing over Cal's other arm. Elinor clawed desperately at Cal's hands, trying to wrench the bottle from her own mouth for at least some semblance of relief from the excruciating searing agony she was experiencing with this betrayal by her sister.
Finally, Elinor went still, her thrashing feet coming to a stop. Her head lolled to the side. Then, silence. “I-s she —“ Juliette started.
“No,” Oliver interrupted. “She’s just knocked out from the pain. She’ll be out for a few hours.” He barely glanced down at his twin, instead crushing his baby sister in a bear hug, and holding her face between his hands. “Breathe,” he instructed. “Look at me. Right at me.” Juliette could feel the panic bubble in her stomach, worming its way up her throat. “No, no!” Oliver moved to block his youngest sister’s view of their sibling. “No, look at me. Right at me. It’s okay. You’re okay,” he said evenly. “E-Elinor will be fine, you know that. She deserved this, Juliette. Okay? You know she did.”
“I — but —“ Juliette swallowed. Elinor’s screams still echoed in her head. “It’s….she’s going—-“ It was like she couldn’t form the words. Her brain wouldn’t cooperate with her mouth. Oliver motioned for Calliope. ‘She’s in shock,’ he mouthed over Juliette’s shoulder. “Get her out of here, okay? Take her home. Do not let her out of your sight.”
Cal gathered a trembling Juliette in her arms and kissed her forehead. "Juliette, look at me. I am here. I've got you. Feel my heartbeat, I'm still very yours. I'm worried about you, okay. I'm going to take you home. But Jules, you don't look so good. So I'm going to need to carry you, okay?"
“Okay,” Juliette mumbled. And she felt herself being lifted up and carried. They were at her house before she knew it, and Juliette was placed carefully on her bed. She allowed herself to be enveloped in Cal’s arms. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I dragged you into this. Into my fucked-up family.”
Juliette looked so soft and small in her bed, and Cal climbed in behind her, adjusting her body to align with Juliette's and wrapping an arm around her stomach, rubbing soft reassuring circles as she spoke. "Juliette, I want this. I want you. Everything you come with. Your fucked up family, my family's disapproval, everything that you are. I choose you. You haven't dragged me into anything. I came here willingly, eyes wide open. And I'm not going anywhere."
Juliette shut her eyes and snuggled against Cal. God. She didn’t know how she had gotten so lucky. “I didn’t mean what I said,” she said, trailing her fingers up Cal’s arm and tracing her collarbone. “I was so angry, but not at you. I - couldn’t take it anymore. I couldn’t hold it in..”
Cal caught Juliette's hand in her own, clasping them together. "I... used to feel those things. The things I said. But I don't anymore. It wasn't about you either. You are beautiful. And Elinor, she's not gonna be a problem anymore. Well, at least not the same kind of problem."
Juliette giggled. “She’ll be really annoying, but….she knows I’ll kick her ass if she tries anything.”
"I have no doubt," Cal said softly into Juliette's ear.
Juliette grinned and pressed her lips to Cal’s in a warm, burning kiss. “I love you so much. Can - can I show you just how much?”
"Woah, someone's eager." Cal said with a raised eyebrow. "Not that I'm complaining. And Oliver did ask me not to let you out of my sight. So, I am...good with whatever you want to show me." Cal smiled, leaning into the kiss. Moving her lips softly against Juliette's.
Juliette climbed on top of Cal, pushing her back against the pillows, arms snaking around her back. “I’m always eager to be with you,” she murmured. “Don’t forget that.”
"Never." Cal sighed, mesmerized by the sight of Juliette straddling her. She reached for her neck and brought her down for a strong and cherishing kiss. Feeling Juliette's body against her made her feel so comfortable and happy and seen. She had missed this. Missed their closeness, the ease they had with each other. Juliette's cute little smirk when she was being sexy. And oh my god was she sexy, rolling her hips against her core, knowing, always knowing what she did to her.
Juliette twisted a lock of Cal’s thick, luscious curls around her finger as they kissed. “If you think we had fun earlier…” She reached up and fumbled for her bedside lamp, throwing them into the dark. “Just you wait.”

Chapter Text
Cal's eyes fluttered open, both of her arms around a softly snoring Juliette. She couldn't hide her heart eyes if she tried. Damn she loved this girl. She knew that it was very likely that her family was looking for her now, worried she'd been taken down by a monster, always underestimating her. But she didn't want to face the world, didn't want to look at her phone or get up from Juliette's gentle body heavy on top of hers. So she didn't, she curled her head back into the nape of Juliette's neck, placing soft kisses down her back and fell asleep.
"Juliette." Margot's voice rang through the mansion. "Juliette!" She'd had a long day dealing with lawyers making sure that Elinor would be dealt with humanely, though she so rarely had given humans the same courtesy. Of course the news that Elinor had simply left the police station, having compelled every police officer in the vicinity to let her out, meant that all of Margot's hard work had been for nothing. But also meant that the police didn't have to stay involved. And she had less misgivings about Elinor's strange power than Sebastian. Whatever this meant for the Legacy Council, she worried more than they would find out that the beloved serpent literally resided in her husband, granting him an apparent power to eat Legacy Vampires. Like... Her mother.
“Juliette!” Sebastian hollered up the stairs. He sighed when he received no response. Again. Oliver had been blowing up his phone with text after text. But Sebastian didn’t have the energy to deal with his son. At least not until he had some coffee. As he headed up the stairs, the doorbell rang. “Honey, just go wake her up. I’ll see who is at the door.”
Margot climbed the stairs to her daughter's room, hearing her daughter's soft snores brought a slight smile to her face. But another snore blended in, almost imperceptible and Elinor raised a perturbed eyebrow. Was that? No. It couldn't be? She swung the door to Juliette's bedroom open and sure enough, there Cal was, wrapped protectively and sleepily around Juliette, who had wrapped herself into Cal's chest. Oh shit. So much for her promise to Talia to keep the girls away from each other. The girls were young and in love of course. And if Juliette was anything like her, she would fight like hell for love. She pursed her lips with pride and went to gently shake Juliette awake.
Of course. The Burns family . Who else? “Yes?” Sebastian eyed Talia and Jack curtly. “We need to talk,” Talia said, gesturing behind them to where Oliver stood. “Your son has shared some….very upsetting information with us." Sebastian eyed his son suspiciously, but stepped back to allow everyone into his home. He led the group into the family room. “Please. Sit.”
Juliette groaned. “No, I don’t want to get up,” she mumbled. She cracked an eye open and felt her heart stop in her chest. “Mom!” she squealed, gently pushing Cal off her. “I - we - Cal was,” she stumbled over her words in her haste to offer a quick explanation as to exactly why she was not only naked in bed with another girl (she was forbidden to shut her door whenever she had girls over - it was hilariously human of her parents), much less the Burns girl. “….I’m not going to apologize,” she said finally. “Cal and I are in love. If you can’t accept that, it’s your problem, not mine.”
Cal moved around behind Juliette, waking up to Margot Fairmont had not been something she had anticipated and she clutched Juliette's arm in anticipation for the kind of passive aggressive cruel bullshit Juliette had been subjected to when she had last been to the Fairmont home. Cries of "Bring her out!" Screaming from the front lawn as she threatened Margot Fairmont. Shit, her grip tightened on Juliette's arm, the last time she had seen this formidable woman, she had threatened her. And now, she was entirely in the most vulnerable position possible, naked in bed with her daughter.
Margot hadn't known the two girls were naked, otherwise she might have granted them some privacy before waking them. She flung her hand over her face and turned around. "Juliette Anastasia Fairmont, you are never supposed to have a girl in your room with the door closed, let alone without clothes on." She shoved a random outfit from Juliette's closet at her and tossed Cal her own discarded one. "Get some clothes on, you two. I don't know how I'm going to explain this to Talia. You're both supposed to be staying away from each other." She hid a smirk behind her hand as she read them a theatrical riot act. Complicated as this made things, she was honestly glad to see Juliette going for what she wanted. She felt a sense of pride coupled with dread at the consequences similar to the feeling she had gotten when she had talked to Juliette before her ceremony. Juliette had needed to feed. But her choosing to do things her way, it made Margot's heart swell with gratitude that her daughter was so kind and headstrong. Though compassion could sometimes be rather draining and human, she did not hate the trait in her daughter. It just made her worried for her safety and survival.
“—and she’s been doing this to Juliette for how long?” Sebastian asked incredulously.
“Basically since Jules could walk,” Oliver ran his fingers through his long hair, casting an uneasy glance at Talia. “But you know her. She wasn’t going to say anythingShe wouldn’t have dared said anything.” When Oliver had first shown up at the Burns, he had expected pushback. Anger. Hate. And then the story was spilling from his mouth and before he had known it, he had told the Burns family almost everything. Barcelona. The dry ice. The closet. He told them how Elinor had threatened Juliette and how Cal had jumped in without a second thought to save her. He explained to them, a little reluctantly, that Juliette had starved herself for weeks, thinking she had to punish herself for what she had done to Theo. Oliver had told them about how Juliette had lost it on Elinor when the former had insulted Calliope and her family.
When was done, there was a collective, stunned silence from Jack, Talia, and Apollo. For a moment, he worried he had gone too far, but then…
“I will kill this bitch myself,” Talia had snarled, grabbing a weapon she kept by the fireplace.
“I’ll beat you to it,” Jack had said, shrugging into his jacket and up a silver spear he had retrieved from underneath the coffee table. Even Apollo looked disgusted. Oliver was expecting the anger, but what he was not expecting was…an apology.
First, from Jack. He had explained that it was all he knew. It was how he grew up. His hatred of monsters - vampires - had been instilled in his head the way his childhood neighbors were taught to hate him for the color of his skin. He was taught the same way his elderly relatives were taught to hate people for loving the same sex. And all of it, all of it was shrouded in a lack of education; a lack of empathy. A lack of simply talking to and understanding, your fellow man. And he vowed, then and there, to try his best to understand . To break the cycle. If there was anything he had taught his children, it was to fight for what you believed in. Stand up for those who had trouble standing on their own. There was a reason his daughter had been named Calliope. And she damn well held up to the origin of her name. And for that, he couldn’t have been prouder.
“—Yeah, yeah,” Juliette grumbled, scrambling into the outfit her mother had tossed at her. “I - wait. You’re not….mad?”
"About what, Darling?" Margot tried to hide her smile. But once Juliette and Cal were clothed, she wrapped Juliette in a hug. "I want you to make your own choices, Juliette. And you certainly have."
Cal stood awkwardly to the side but was surprised when Juliette wrapped an arm around her and brought her into the hug. If you had told Cal she would be surrounded so closely by two vampires without a stake nearby before she had met Juliette and the Fairmont family, she probably would have laughed in disbelief. She used to dream of stabbing monsters, especially vampires, dusting them left and right. It was odd that now she was enveloped by two unstakeable vampires and she felt very safe.
Juliette met Cal’s bewildered stare, mirroring exactly how she felt. She pulled away slowly. “Mom, I, uh, have something to tell you. About Elinor..” She moved closer to Cal and interlaced their fingers.
"What about Elinor?" Margot asked cautiously. Of course she was causing problems, she really just had no concept of decorum, as much as she behaved as if she understood the importance of blending in, all Elinor had ever wanted was power. And she had never been shy about expressing it.
“Uh….” Juliette swallowed thickly. “She’s, uh, she….you guys shouldn’t buy her that Range Rover she’s been wanting for Christmas…”
Margot raised a quizzical eyebrow "Why, not?"
“Yeah, dad!?” Juliette called out, answering to no one. “Okay! Be right there!” She tugged on Cal’s arm and shot her mother an anxious smile. “Gotta go. Dad’s calling.” And with that, she was gone, dashing down the grand staircase. She skidded into the family room and was so surprised to see the rest of the Burnses that she came to an abrupt stop, only to have Cal crash into her from behind.
Ouch! Cal rubbed at her nose and looked up at what had stopped Juliette so suddenly. Her eyes came to rest on a pair of dark skinned hands that were very familiar, calloused and cut up from decades of monster fighting. Oh shit. Jack Burns sat eyes forward at the Fairmont table, Talia at his right, and Apollo at his left. If Cal ducked away quickly enough, maybe they wouldn't see her.
“Calliope Antigone Burns,” Talia pointed at the chair across from her. “Sit down. Now.”
Juliette smiled feebly. “Uh, wow. You know, I totally forgot. I promised Ben I would call him, so I’m just gonna…” She turned and tried to make a break for it, but was met with the stern gaze of her mother, who pulled out another chair and gestured for daughter to sit down.
Reluctantly, Juliette sat down, not daring to glance at Calliope’s parents or her brother. Oliver, on the other hand, looked very amused. “Is this your first rodeo?” he snickered.
Margot may not have known why exactly the Burns family was now sitting at her dining table but she did know Juliette was not going anywhere if she had anything to say about it.
Cal reluctantly sat down beside Juliette, their hands still clasped together, awaiting whatever scolding was sure to come from all of their parents.
Talia reached across the table and clasped her daughter’s free hand between her own. “Are you hurt?”
Cal wasn't expecting the level of tenderness from her mother, especially when she had been caught literally glued to the side and holding the hand of the vampire her parents forbid her to see any longer. She softly held her mom's hand and nodded earnestly, her eyes sparking with the newness of this dynamic. Could Juliette and Cal actually be together without Cal losing her family? The thought brought a tear of relief to her eye and a grin to her face.
Margot also was surprised by general lack of animosity around her dining room table. If she ignored centuries of violence between Hunters and Legacies, she even felt like it could have a pleasant experience. As such, she was somewhat delighted to see Talia so even keeled in the face of their daughters' disobedience and staunch belief that they belonged together. She had never stopped wanting to enjoy a nice glass of Rosé alongside Talia's Pinot and had meant it in their first encounter that she had liked her. Of course Sebastian almost dying at Talia and Jack Burns' hand was a definite sore point. She could still feel the life beginning to drain out of him, his blood not enough to sustain him, and hers barely enough to keep him alive as he had fed on her. But it had been years now, bygones.
“Margot,” Sebastian reached across the table and grabbed her hands. “We need to talk about Elinor.”
Juliette swallowed, reflexively squeezing Cal’s hand. They were going to talk about Elinor now? “Uh, actually, Cal and I have a chemistry test, so we’ll just be —“
"Darling, you've tried that too many times in the last few minutes for us to believe you. Now, we are not upset at the moment, but if you keep making up excuses, that could change." Margot cut her daughter off with a huff. And turned back to her husband. "Now, Dear, what about Elinor?"
“Elinor is a nasty piece of work,” Oliver cut in. “Something must be done!” He slammed his fist on the table in mock debate. “I vote her off the island.”
Margot rolled her eyes softly at her son's antics. As dangerous as he had made things for their family, she had deeply missed his sense of humor and his laugh. "Of course you do, Oliver. I would expect nothing less. But what is this about? What has she done this time?" Margot of course knew of Elinor's escapades with her special gift, but had no idea what the Burns family had to do with that revelation.
Juliette swallowed heavily. “I, uh….” She glanced at Calliope nervously. “Help me,” she mouthed.
Cal saw Juliette's pleading look and decided to jump in. Squeezing Juliette's hand tighter in her own. "What she's done is manipulate and abuse Juliette for years. She is a horrendous monster and I'm not even talking about her being a vampire. So I... Well... We... Took care of it." Calliope kept her shoulder's back and looked straight ahead at Margot.
Margot stared bewildered at this headstrong girl who held her daughter's heart and then turned her gaze to Sebastian, or really anyone willing to give context to what had happened. Cal kept her eyes level with Margot, still unsure of Juliette's parents, least of all Margot, even despite their strange group-hug reunion in Juliette's bedroom. "Jules, Baby," she spoke softly so only Juliette could hear. "I think they need to hear it from you. I'm here with you. If it gets to be too much, say the word and we'll run. And never look back if we have to. I've got you, Baby. You hear me? You don't have to do this alone."
Juliette squeezed Cal’s hand so hard she was worried she would break it. Cal was everything to her. She loved her so, so much. “Okay…” She took a deep breath and averted her eyes to the table, not wanting to see her mother’s face when the story came out. “Elinor has - she’s put me through a living hell for as long as I can remember. She tried these really horrific methods to, to break me of my humanity. Said I was too weak. One time she made me stand on a block of ice until my feet went numb. Another time, she locked me in her closet for three hours because I broke her bottle of perfume. She —-“
“Honey, it’s just a bit of sibling rivalry,” Sebastian interrupted. At first, he had believed the Burns account of what had gone on between Elinor and Juliette, but as he heard his youngest daughter explain what had happened, he had realized it had been out of proportion. “All siblings get picked on. It’s perfectly normal.”
“I wasn’t being picked on,” Juliette snapped.
“Elinor is a sadist, old man!” Oliver said at the time time.
Sebastian rubbed his temples. He was used to his children’s bickering, but bringing another family - hunters - was absurd. “Okay, enough! Clearly, Elinor is a little boisterous, but she that’s how she is. I’m sure these were all misunderstandings.”
“A misunderstanding?” Juliette screeched. “Oh, really? Was it a misunderstanding when Elinor tortured me with silver from the time I was eight until last fucking night? Was it a misunderstanding when she held me over the bannister and threatened to drop me? Remember when we went to Barcelona?” Juliette could feel the anger seeping through, but she was so fed up she didn’t care. “Yeah, real fun times there. Watching Elinor torture four kids to death because I wouldn’t feed off them, must have been a misunderstanding!” Before she knew what she was doing, Juliette had leapt up on her chair and yanked her shirt up enough to show her parents - and subsequently, everyone else in the room - the jagged, crude four-line tally mark Elinor had smashed to look like an ‘E.’ “Your favorite child is a conniving, remorseless, sadistic sociopath!” She dropped her her shirt and sat back down. Her eyes met those of her father, then her mother’s. “Which is why we —“ Juliette gestured toward herself, Cal, and Oliver, “turned that little bitch human. Thanks to Carmen.”
Oliver had known already that his little sister had been branded by Elinor's cruelty. But seeing the jagged indelible burn into Juliette's unmarred skin made him sick. It wasn't easy to scar a vampire, much less a Legacy, and it could certainly never be an accident. As always, Sebastian's excuses for Elinor set his teeth on edge. "Come on, Old Man, even you can't sweep that under the rug. Elinor is a dangerous and vicious sadist and I'm surprised how much you never noticed how much she loves to manipulate people. Ever think that maybe you're under her thrall? Her special powers? This is about how she treated Juliette but she is adept at turning you against your kids. Remember me Bash, your son? Killing those people, and M--Mr. Green gutted me. And she just sat there smirking. Are you really so blinded by her that you would also not believe my soft, compassionate little sister?"
Margot shuddered at her son's words, her daughter's words. Much as Sebastian did tend to try his best to ignore Elinor's behavior, both of their other children had always been sensitive. Did he really think this was his blood? That by bringing together a Made and a Legacy, he had created dangerous and evil children? Margot placed a reassuring hand on Sebastian's arm, her eyes meeting with Oliver's across the table. Then sliding down to the mark that meant that she and her husband had gotten everything wrong. Branding a Legacy was a special brand of torture because unlike all other forms, it never went away.
She took in the desperate face of her son, the broken face of her daughter, the astonished faces of the Burns family and the gaping, scared and crushed face of her beloved husband. Elinor had needed to face consequences, and though it was a bit late given how Oliver had been treated, Margot was a bit relieved that her daughter could apparently no longer wreak havoc. Human? Elinor a human? She'd claw her own skin off rather than exist as something she deemed so beneath her. Whatever had happened, she knew she and Sebastian needed to see their eldest daughter, to protect her from herself and the inevitable ire of others and to deal with what had been done against their other children.
"Where is your sister now?"
“Hopefully getting electrocuted by a toaster,” Juliette grumbled. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Cal suppress a smirk, and lightly squeezed her hand. God, she loved this woman.
“ Juliette ,” Sebastian sighed. “Where is she?”
Oliver grinned. He so admired his baby sister’s sass. It was something that always managed to get under Elinor’s skin. “At my place. Carmen has her. She’s still sick. Should wear off. In a week or so.” He shrugged his shoulders as if to say "Whoopsie Daisy."
Cal was glad Oliver had jumped in with Elinor's location since she and Jules had no idea of her whereabouts. "I truly hope the both of you understand what you have in this girl," she fondly tucked a lock of Juliette's hair behind her ear, her heart skipped a beat when Juliette nuzzled her cheek into her hand, the softness of her skin and the loving gesture almost making her lose her train of thought. "If you can't see that she, that no one deserves this, you truly don't deserve her. Like look, I know you're all monsters-- well, vampires-- but I hope you realize that Elinor was a danger to all of you. And it's not like Juliette killed her. She could never. I'm just glad we did it to Elinor before she could figure out how to do it to Juliette. Your daughter is better than every single monster in existence and honestly, you better know that. If you don't, I just don't know how to help you. Creatures that blind get staked before they even know what's coming." Cal glared at Margot whose eyes met with Talia's.
I told you this was young love Margot communicated with her gaze.
I can see that now. Talia glared back, on edge.
They're not actually hurting anyone Margot stared.
Nothing that isn't caused by our own prejudices Talia conceded, nodding sagely.
"Juliette, we are sorry for how you've been treated, Darling. And I--" She clasped Sebastian's hand in her own, his callouses bringing her back to earth where she too had chosen a human against her parents' wishes. Her eyes met Sebastian's. It isn't you, Darling. Her heart cried. He tried so hard to be the stoic and concerned father, but that was a hard tightrope on which to balance and this news of Elinor had plucked the taut cord upon which he was balancing and if he didn't get out of his head and listen to their children, she feared he would go careening off the edge.
"We," she stated meaningfully "believe you."
Juliette felt her heart soar hearing Cal speak. Cal’s words were spoken with such love and sincerity that it made her want to cry. She couldn’t wait until they were alone tonight, so she could show her how much she meant to her. How truly and deeply she loved her. Juliette rubbed things, her palms brushing over the scratches Cal had left on her the night before. She subconsciously chewed on her lip at the memory. It had been a wild night, and Juliette felt like it brought the two even closer together. “Good,” she said finally. “Can we go to school now? We’re going to be late. I have a perfect attendance record to uphold, so….”
Sebastian smiled fondly and gestured for the girls to leave. “We’ll talk to you both tonight. Get to school now.” Deep down, he knew his eldest daughter was troubled, that she needed a significant amount of help. In part, he did blame himself. Before Juliette had been born, he had doted on his only daughter. Given her everything without question. Now it was apparent that she also took whatever she wanted. And it was time it came to an end. “Jack. Talia. Thank for you bringing this to our attention.” Turning to Oliver, he clasped a heavy hand on his son’s shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he apologized earnestly. “If you are open to it, I would like to begin to repair our relationship.”
"Well, Bash. Didn't think you had it in you. I'm... open to it." Oliver resisted the urge to rub at his eyes, feeling the faint start of a tear. This wasn't even close to enough for him, didn't make up for how he had been treated. But damn if hearing those words from Sebastian Fairmont hadn't been something he had dreamt about for years. Carmen could attest. And she used to tell him that there might be a chance, not spell-related, to mend things. Of course she was right. She pretty much always was. Oliver surged forward with a handshake, surprised when Sebastian instead held him in a hug.

Chapter Text
“God, your protective streak is so hot,” Juliette mumbled against Cal’s lips. The two had made it to school on time and were on their way to home room when Juliette had other ideas - she had hastily pulled Cal into the nearest empty room and shoved her against the wall, kissing her with all her might.
Cal chuckled against Juliette's eager lips. "Not that I'm complaining, but what about your perfect attendance record?"
“Who cares?” Juliette smirked, pushing harder against her as her arms snaked around her waist. She pulled back, glancing behind her shoulder when someone slammed a door out in the hallway. Crap. This wasn’t exactly the most private place… Juliette’s eyes landed on the classroom closet. Bingo. “Come on,” she giggled. She practically dragged Cal across the room and into the closest, locking the door behind them. “Remember the pantry?” Of course Cal remembered the pantry. Without waiting for an answer, Juliette surged forward and crashed their lips together.
Moving her lips against Julliette's was something Cal did now almost as muscle memory. But the taste, the softness, the very sensation of their lips colliding was as hot now as it had ever been. Actually hotter with all they had been through and from last night, reuniting and breaking a prop bed together. She pulled Juliette closer in the closet, their proximity a heady combination with their heartbeats getting faster. "Oh I remember the pantry. You were so eager. Do you remember when I showed up, sitting on that couch? The look you gave me was so confident. Like you knew we were inevitable. That was so hot by the way. But you know what? I knew how to wipe that smug look from your face." Cal said pulling away from Juliette to rake her eyes down her body, taking in the vision before her. "All I have to do is show you I want you too and you can't even breathe. Do I take your breath away, Baby? Do you want me to?"
Juliette smirked. Their back-and-forth was always so easy. So fun. And so hot. “All you have to do is look at me and I can’t breathe.” She dipped her fingers in the waistband of Cal’s jeans and slightly pushed them down her hips. “What I want is to fuck you.”
Cal tried to slow her heartbeat, entirely aware that Juliette knew exactly what was on her mind. "Who said monsters and monster hunters can't agree?" Cal responded, unzipping her jeans so that Juliette's nimble slender fingers could have better access.
Cal moaned loudly at Juliette's touch. "Fuck, Babe, I –" She interrupted her own thought with an even louder moan as Juliette's fingers trailed over her clit and slid into her. Her head falling into Juliette's neck at the sensation. Kissing and sucking on Juliette's neck while she was inside her was making her lose control already. She sunk her teeth into Juliette's pulse point and rolled her hips into Juliette's fingers, feeling hot and desired and thoroughly gone for this girl.
“Shh,” Juliette giggled. “This time, you really do have to be quiet,” she grinned. She worked her fingers in and out of Cal, titling her head back as Cal started to bite at her neck. “Fuck, this is hot.” She swiped her thumb over her girlfriend’s clit, shuddering as it throbbed under her touch. There was nothing Juliette loved more than feeling Cal’s body react to her every touch.
Cal didn't want to be a vampire, she really didn't but damn did she understand biting a neck. The sultry sounds coming from the girl she loved as she sucked and bit and licked that delectable spot she loved were almost enough to make Cal come undone and beg Juliette to bite her again. But, Jules was right, they had to keep quiet. And that... That would be impossible if Juliette was fucking and biting her at the same time.
"Baby," Cal moved away from Juliette's neck just enough to whisper in her ear, taking it between her teeth and tugging gently, a low growl in her voice. She whispered trying desperately to keep her voice low "I am so fucking close. H-how the fuck do you do this to me?"
“Magic,” Juliette grinned. She dropped to her knees, dragging Cal’s jeans down with her as she did. “I love this view of you, babe.” She sighed and pulled down Cal’s underwear, removing her fingers and bringing her hand up to Cal’s mouth. “Suck,” she instructed, tracing her lips with her fingers. Juliette leaned in and linked a sloppy line up Cal’s inner thigh. “God. Your smell is intoxicating.” And then she drove her tongue deep into her girlfriend, using her free hand to work feverishly against Cal’s clit.
Cal moved her lips down Juliette's neck with feverish kisses and down to the proffered fingers, sucking them, hard. The taste of Juliette's fingers and her own arousal made her throw her head back in ecstasy. Being bare before Juliette on a school day in a closet was doing things to Cal and when she felt her tongue driving into her, Juliette's hands gripping her ass, desperate to taste every last drop of what Cal had for her, she nearly screamed with pleasure. But she looked down at Juliette hungry eyes as she voraciously ate her out and saw the challenge in them. Don't scream her eyes said, eyebrows raised as she closed her eyes and continued to makeout with Cal's clit. Cal gritted her teeth as she felt her orgasm building, working it's way through her body on to her core. She gasped with arousal at Juliette's tongue pushing deeper into her, licking at her walls while her fingers continued their work on her clit.
God, this was hot. Ben was going to lose his mind when she told him. Juliette ran her tongue through Cal’s slick folds, groaning with pleasure as Cal’s walls constricted around her tongue. Being here with Cal felt so right. Never in her wildest fantasies did she dream she would one day be eating Calliope Burns in a closet. On school grounds, no less. Juliette removed her tongue and replaced it with her fingers, kissing a trail back up Cal’s toned stomach. She kissed her hard, one hand pushing down her own underwear. She grabbed Cal’s hand and brought it between her legs, moving her mouth to lightly nip at Cal’s exposed neck, licking her way over to her ear. “If you touch me, I’ll really bite you,” she teased in a low, throaty whisper. “Remember how good that felt, baby?”
Oh she remembered "F-fuck!" Cal screamed with pleasure, muffling her words by biting into Juliette's neck as her orgasm overtook her, gushing onto Juliette's fingers. "I remember." Cal said drowsily, basking in the feeling of Juliette's fingers still inside her pulsing core. Slowly she brought her fingers to trail lazy circles on Juliette's clit, the smell of her arousal intoxicating. She knew she could absolutely never keep quiet as long as Juliette's fangs were in her neck. But she had an idea. There was a small shelf in the Janitor's closet that she could utilize to her advantage. She smirked at Juliette and crashed their lips together, lifting Juliette onto the shelf and pushing her fingers inside of her to a rhythm. With her free hand, she cleared the shelf so that Juliette could have the room she would need to absolutely writhe.
"Okay, you can bite me, Baby. But only if you do it while I go down on you." She nipped at her ear and whispered, working her way down Juliette's body, trailing kisses down her chest and licking at her underwear line, pulling down Juliette's pants and undies to taste what she craved.
“You’re kinky today, aren’t you?” Juliette rasped as Cal’s tongue dipped into her. Fuck, did that feel good. Cal’s warm, wet tongue against her hot center almost made Juliette cum then and there. “Fuck,” she gasped, rolling her hips forward. Her fangs peeked out from behind her lips and she leaned down, sinking them into the pulsing vein of her lover’s neck.
When Cal had challenged Juliette, she had of course known her stubborn kinky vampire would never say no. But when it happened, when Juliette's teeth slid into her skin again, and this time while Cal could taste what she was doing to Juliette, Cal had to muffle her orgasmic screams into Juliette as she desperately ate her out.
“Goddamnit,” Juliette gasped against Cal’s neck. If she were mortal, she would absolutely be going to hell when she died. She rocked her hips back and forth, desperate to ride Cal’s mouth with as much as she could, “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” she panted. “Oh, Cal, I love you so much.” And then her orgasm hit her, hard, and Juliette’s hips slammed against the shelf and disappeared beneath her. If it weren’t for Cal’s quick reflexes, she would have fallen right on the splintered wood. As always, Cal was there to catch her, gently propping her up as Juliette rode out her orgasm.
When Juliette finally caught her breath, her forehead slick with sweat she leaned against Cal, taking her hands in her own. “N-not a word,” she deadpanned, gesturing toward the now-broken shelf with a sweep of their arms. “I swear to God.”
Cal laughed good naturedly, eyebrow raised, humming as she placed a chaste kiss on Juliette's lips. Even if that word is 'pantry'? Or 'cherries'? It's okay, Jules. You just are so damn passionate and I get you so hot that you break things sometimes." She smirked against her lips. "Or pretty much every time. You probably had something to do with those peaches falling off the tree when we fucked against a different one. Maybe breaking things during sex is just another of your special powers." She sucked gently on Juliette's bottom lip and gave her a quick peck before helping Juliette step over the broken shelf and out of the Janitor's closet.
“Cal!” Juliette hissed, yanking her back into the closet. “Is your brain still in post-sex fog? We’re naked.” She shook her head fondly, tossing her girlfriend her clothes, and scrambling into her own, as Cal did the same. When they were dressed, Juliette creaked the door open and stuck her head out. All clear. “Now, we go.”
The girls quickly grabbed their stuff and slipped out into the hallway, stopping by the girls’ restroom to fix their hair and reapply smudged make up. “Ben is going to lose his mind,” Juliette chuckled as she ran a brush through her hair. She washed her hands and leaned against the sink, checking out her reflection. “I really miss him,” she added softly. She met Cal’s gaze in the mirror and smirked. “When I told him about our night in the pantry, he asked if my life changed forever. And it has. That boy is too smart for his own good.”
Wow, Cal chuckled to herself, had she really been in such a daze that she had guided Juliette out of that closet while neither of them had clothes on? Into a classroom that anyone could have entered without warning? Cal, dabbed at her lips with a dark lipstick, listening to Juliette talk about Ben. She stared fondly at her as she told her he had teased her about the pantry. She was right, he really was going to lose his mind, especially if the prop bed was any indication.
The intercom rang with the morning announcements interrupting her thoughts. The drone of the voice blurred as Cal again became distracted by Juliette. She let her eyes settle on her form and in her face, tracing her contours, committing everything to memory. "I love you, Juliette." She said lovingly, hugging her from behind and gently placing light kisses on her neck.
"--also," the voice dragged on "if anyone has any information on what happened to the prop bed for the Romeo and Juliet performance, please report it to the office."
Cal was shaken out of the bliss of kissing Juliette's neck, her head thrown back in a sexy and downright distracting display of ecstasy. Cal was unsure if she had heard what she'd thought she did. She pulled back and looked into Juliette's eyes, hazy from Cal's touch and the afterglow of what they had done in the closet. "Did--did they just say–"
“—Shit,” Juliette cursed. A pregnant pause between them. Then she burst into giggles and leaned back into Cal’s touch. She hadn’t thought about the repercussions of their little rendezvous. Certainly not that an announcement would be broadcast to the whole school. It was probably going to be the topic of conversation for weeks. Last time someone had broken a prop for their school’s production of ‘Chicago,’ there had been what could only be described as interrogation on the whole student body. “Well,” she shrugged meekly, wrapping Cal’s arms around her waist and resting her hands atop hers. “It looks like we found a new tradition.” She tilted her head up to gaze into Cal’s eyes. “Band room next week?”
"It's a date, babe. Can't wait to see what I can get you to break next." Cal laughed as the two of them blended into the hallway full of students, holding hands and giggling as they listened to swell of gossip around them, settling into each other with a smirking shrug. The families reconciled, Elinor rendered inert, the girls finally had a chance to breathe and live their life together, the only thing broken between them anymore, the things Juliette broke in the ecstasy of loving Cal the way she always wanted to.
