Catra couldn’t breathe.
She just couldn’t.
How could Adora do this to her? Why? Was everyone just going to leave?
The tears didn’t stop flowing out. It was just so easy to give up now. No one wanted her. Maybe Catra should go down with a bang but what was the point? No one wanted her. It would be great if she died. The edge was right there, wasn’t it? It’s always been there.
The night sky was so beautiful. The stars shimmered in the sky. Not a soul was around. The ground so down below. It was inviting.
Brightmoon was beautiful. So bright, like its name. It really used to give her hope. Maybe things would change. But no, they never could. She had entered Brightmoon with a ray of hope in her heart. Adora was with her, the war was over, Prime was dead and it was peaceful. She was really fixing her mistakes. Until Adora decided to abandon her. Again. Seriously, why did the universe just love to make her suffer?
Maybe she just deserved it. Like Shadow Weaver always liked to say, she was a useless piece of trash. Nothing but a nuisance. No one needed her. She had no reason to keep living. Her claws looked inviting. She was on top of the Brightmoon tower, no one would stop her. The forest was down below. The surface of the tower was so slippery. Maybe they’d think it was an accident. Good.
The tears never stopped streaming out even then though. Would it really stop hurting if she died? Maybe she did deserve to hurt his bad. She was so angry. At herself. For being this way. For pushing everyone away. She growled and got her claws out. Very impulsively, she slashed them at her arms.
Catra winced as she saw the blood drip out. It was exactly what she deserved. Her vision was starting to blur out. She laid back down. So, this would be how it all ended? Everything she did was for nothing. Catra sobbed. She closed her blue and yellow eyes, not planning to open them ever again.
Everything is better this way.
She felt herself waver. She really was dying, wasn’t she? The pain was finally starting to numb out. So why did it feel so wrong?
Catra remembered all the times she’d been happy. Had fun. There was Adora, her sunshine. The warmth she brought. She remembered Adora’s soft touch. She remembered Adora’s ocean-like eyes. Wow, what a wonder. Adora was a great reason to live. Too bad she was gone now. Left.
“Catra?” Adora’s smooth, caramelly sweet voice called out. Catra opened her eyes. "Hey, listen, I'm sorry for yelling at you and...just being such an idiot! I really don't want to be leaving you, I'm so sorry."
“…A-Adora?” Catra asked to the wind.
Adora gasped. “…Catra?! What happened to you?”
Adora’s footsteps approached rapidly. “…Catra…you’re bleeding.”
Catra chuckled. “Yeah I am.”
Adora’s eyes widened in realization. “Why’d you do this to yourself?”
Catra chuckled again. “You really thought I could live without you? Well, surprise, I can’t.”
“Catra, please just hold on, alright? I’ll get you to the medic, please don’t give up, please,” Adora gently lifted her cat up. Catra groaned in dizziness.
“Keep your eyes open Catra, please…please…please,” Adora begged.
“You’re just better off without me,” Catra whispered and coughed as she let her eyes close.
Adora’s voice was faded out, but she was saying something. Something.
Catra didn’t want to know what it was. It was so much easier to give up. The entire world would be better off if she stopped existing. Who needed her? Not Adora, not her friends, not anyone.
So, she opened her eyes one last time, to be met with sparkling blue ones. Adora’s always had beautiful eyes. She wanted to remember them, forever. But there were tears streaming down both of their eyes. And the sight of seeing Adora hurt was something Catra couldn’t bear. Adora’s words were not blurred anymore.
“Gods Catra, we’re almost there, please hold on!” Adora said. “I love you, so please stay! Stay like I did for you back at the heart! I’m so sorry for what I said earlier! I do love you, and you being here is definitely good! I’m so sorry…”
Catra’s eyes opened wider. What the hell did she do? She couldn’t just give up! Adora still needed her!
“I’m so sorry, Adora…” Catra whispered weakly. “I’m sorry for trying to leave you.”
Catra tried to keep her eyes open but it was no good. The last thing she remembered before passing out was her being lowered onto a bed and Adora’s gentle hands holding hers. The warmth was leaking into her. It was a gentle ray of sunlight, telling her to keep going. She was almost there.
The next time Catra woke up, Adora was right beside her, sleeping. She smiled. The dumb blonde really was a loyal golden retriever. Catra had been foolish in thinking that Adora didn’t need her. She needed Catra just as much as Catra needed her. And Catra could finally understand that. She moved closer to her idiot and hugged Adora tight. Adora smelled like a breezy summer day and the vast ocean. So…life-giving. Catra was never going to try to let go again. She was finally happy.
