Work Text:
Ranpo stared at the building. The Academy was enormous.
His father asked him to go to the Yokohama Police Academy if something ever happened to him and so he did.
The talk with Mori still disturbed him, but he couldn’t believe what he said.
“You’re smarter than most”
That was an understatement if what the doctor said was true.
Now he could do nothing if not give the Academy a shot.
He would see if Mori was right. He would see if his parents never told him.
The Academy accepted Ranpo immediately after he told them who his father was.
They were ecstatic to have him.
The dorms were strange. They seemed like a prison.
Ranpo never shared his room with anyone but he didn’t think it would be a bad experience.
It was, in fact, a bad experience.
His roommate - more like cellmate - was someone who introduced himself as Shouta.
He was insufferable.
He was too loud.
He talked too much without saying anything of relevance and with a too-loud voice.
He snored too loudly.
He bumped into everything making so much noise.
He was insufferable.
The lessons were stupid.
The teachers were stupid.
The students were stupid.
Ranpo was every day more inclined to believe in Mori’s words.
They had a ‘real investigation’ day.
A detective came with an old unsolved case and explained the details.
He asked the reasonings of the students and verified their knowledge of the behaviour they had to have on a crime scene.
He was an idiot.
They were idiots.
When Ranpo’s turn came he exposed the truth.
Who was the murderer.
How they killed the victim.
Why the police couldn’t catch them.
The detective was shocked.
Ranpo was right.
They gave him a prize.
They gave the Academy recognition.
The Academy was so good, they had students crack unsolved cases.
Shouta was expelled from the Academy about one month later than Ranpo joined.
Ranpo was relieved.
Until they gave him a new cellma- roommate. Until they gave him a new roommate.
Daisuke was quieter than Shouta.
Ranpo was glad.
The dress code was stupid.
The curfew was stupid.
The rules were stupid.
Ranpo.
Loathed.
This.
Place.
Ranpo argued with the dorm leader for the umpteen time.
They said it was enough.
He was expelled.
Ranpo believed Mori.
He had to be more intelligent than all of these people.
They were stupid.
Ranpo was happy.
Ranpo was relieved.
Ranpo walked away smiling.
Today Ranpo understood a little bit better the adult world.
