"I'm breaking up with you."
"What?" Artemis said, spinning her chair around so fast she almost gave herself whiplash. "Why?"
Bonney was leaning against the open window she had presumably just climbed in. "Moriah cheated on Perona again. She seems like she's really done with him this time."
"Oh." Artemis deflated. Bonney had been best friends with Perona since elementary school and had been in love with her since middle school. When Ro started dating Moriah, Artemis's longtime best friend and crush, Shirahoshi, had just gotten back together with her shit-ass boyfriend, Vander Decken. Bonney and Artemis had started dating as a sort of solidarity. That was nearly 6 months ago.
"Yeah."
"Okay." Artemis knew she couldn't compare to Perona. She'd accepted that a long time ago.
"Okay?" Bonney asked.
"Okay," Artemis nodded.
"That's it?" Bonney raised an eyebrow questioningly.
"What else do you want me to say, Bonney?"
"I dunno, Arty, but we've been dating for 6 months. I expected a little more than 'okay'."
"Alright. I've been falling in love with you since we met at the roller rink third-wheeling Perona and Shirahoshi. I keep the ticket stubs from the movie we saw on our first date in my wallet. I can't order Margherita pizza without thinking of you. I'm always gonna leave that window unlocked because for some ungodly reason you'd rather climb up the side of my house than use the front door. You're the reason I keep a mini-fridge and a microwave in my room. I'm not Perona and that kills me inside because it's meant you were gonna break up with me since day 1. I've been dreading this day but I always knew it was coming so I'm prepared for it. Later, I'm gonna eat a whole tub of Scooperman ice cream by myself and cry the whole time because it's your favorite and I'm probably not gonna go to school tomorrow because I'll be too tired from cryng all night. Is that what you want to hear?"
"You're in love with me?"
"For a couple of months now."
"What about Shirahoshi?"
"What about her?"
"You- I- She- You're in love with her."
"Astute observation, Sherlock."
"She's single."
"Uh-huh." Shirahoshi had broken up with Vander Decken two weeks before.
"You're not gonna ask her out?"
"Well maybe now that you've dumped me but no, I wasn't gonna ask her out because I was perfectly happy dating you, thank you."
"Me too."
"What?"
"I love you too."
"If I recall correctly, you just told me you were breaking up with me for Perona."
"No-" At the raise of Artemis's eyebrow she amended her statement. "Okay yeah, but only because I've been waiting for you to dump me for 2 weeks."
"Why would I-?"
"She's your Perona."
Artemis stared at Bonney. "We're both idiots."
"Clearly."
"Come here," Artemis said. Bonney crossed the room to where Artemis was sitting at her desk and stood between her open legs.
Artemis set her hands on Bonney's hips and stared up at her. "I love you."
"I love you too, Artemis." Bonney bent down and kissed her.
"You know, B, I've never told you this but you were my first kiss."
"Really?"
"Yeah." Artemis leaned her head against Bonney's stomach.
Bonney ran a hand through Artemis's hair. "What about everything else?"
"You were my first at pretty much everything, B."
Bonney stood there for a few more minutes, running her hands through Artemis's hair before she spoke. "You still love Shirahoshi."
It wasn't a question, but Artemis answered anyway. "Yeah, but I'm not gonnna do anything about it."
"You should."
Artemis looked up sharply. "Bonney we just talked about thi-"
"That's not what I meant. You don't have to break up with me. You can still ask her out."
"You're polyam?"
"You know what that is?"
"With the sheer amount of fanfiction I read it'd be a miracle if I didn't."
"So?"
"You should ask out Perona then too."
"Alright. You ask out Shirahoshi and I'll ask out Perona."
"Alright."
"Alright."
"I love you, B."
"I love you too, Arty."
"And if Shirahoshi says no, I don't want that to stop you from asking out Ro."
"Same to you. But like, switched. I don't want-"
"I know what you meant, babe."
"Good." Bonney leaned down and pressed a kiss to Artemis's lips.
