Carter and Sadie had made their way through the duat and the land of demons to the sea of chaos to snatch the serpents shadow to execrate apophis and win the war.
As they approached the obelisk, a voice echoed in their minds. “Who is there? Why do you approach me?” A voice like a chain-smoking giant rattled through their heads.
“Who are you?” Carter asked.
“I am like the other larger snake, but not. I am Apophis, but weaker, different.”
“We will stop you” Sadie said.
“Stop me how? Stop me from what?”
“Destroying the world”
“I am not destroying the world”
“Didn’t you say you were Apophis?!?” Sadie asks, exasperated
“I am like him. We are chaos. The roaring sea and the howling storm. The water running down the mountain, the wind grinding down stone. We are separate, and inequal. We are similar, not the same. Again, why are you here”
“We’re here to take the shadow of Apophis.” Replied Sadie.
“Why?” The voice asks.
“Because Apophis wants to destroy the world”
“Why do you care?”
“We don’t want the world to end, duh” comes the irreverent reply.
“Why?” The voice asks again.
“Because we live in it!” Sadie says, offended.
“What do you do in this world?” the voice asks, sounding intrigued.
“We… live. Do things, talk to people, go places. Sadie says, sounding confused as to why he even asked.
“These things and people and places sounds interesting. Let me put a bit of me in you and I will let you have apophis’s shadow.” The voice replies.
“Letting something that claims to be like Apophis and which is speaking to us from the sea of chaos put a bit of itself in us sounds like a remarkably bad idea.” Carter speaks up
"We cannot trust anything from the Sea of Chaos." Zia agreed
“If you break it down far enough, everything is chaos. You are made from little bits of chaos, that has convinced itself that it is orderly. If the gods are like pyramids and statues, stones cut from mountains stacked and shaped into their forms, you mortals are like sandcastles. You look like something made to a coherent shape, but you will fall apart in an instant if the wind or waves strikes you.” The voice from the sea speaks again, sounding slightly lecturing and mildly amused.
“And after hearing that very charming metaphor, why would we be more inclined to let the entity of chaos put a bit of itself into us? ” Sadie injected, with customary lack of caution.
“The wind offers to divert it’s path to not strike the sandcastle that is you, offers to keep the waves from reaching you, offers to extend your amusing self-delusion of being orderly, why would any sand castle refuse?” the deep voice changes, sounding like a chorus of rattlesnakes the size of school busses teamed up to make words. “Why would you refuse the ability to swim unharmed in this sea which is Apophis and me, the skill to learn any discipline, the power to stand strong and unfaltering endlessly, to be endless and inexhaustible?
“Wait, this fragment of your will would give us what?” asked Sadie, sounding intrigued despite herself.
“All the powers I just mentioned. The presence of my power and will within your chaos which imagines it is order will force it further into shape, keeping it in order, for as long as I want it to be.” A pair of shadowy clouds shaped like cloaks floated out of the sea. “I want to know all these things you have mentioned about this world you live in. Put on the cloak, and I will let you have the shadow of Apophis.”
(one brief whispered conversation between Carter Sadie and Zia about the feasibility of finding the giant chaos death snake shadow while being actively attacked by another giant chaos death snake that’s pissed about being turned down later)
“Alright, I’ll do it” Sadie said firmly
“No, we need you to summon the shadow of Apophis” Carter countered. “I will do it”
“Making these are not taxing.” The voice sounded amused “You can all do it.”
“No!” Zia said, “We may need your help to find the shadow, but we do not trust you, snake.”
“I do desire more than one perspective, so I will not reveal Apophis’s shadow unless two or more of you are wearing the shroud.” Came the amused-sounding counter.
"You can't just change the terms like that!" Carter said, sounding irritated. "You said that only one of us needed to accept your power!"
"I said no such thing!" The voice sounded insulted. "and my terms will not change. Even if you search the shoreline until your feeble flesh rots, you will not find Aapophis's shadow without my revealing it to you"
After a brief silent conversation between the three, Carter puts his arms into the cloak which was floating in the air, and it wrapped around him, covering him for a brief amount of time before retracting and then vanishing. Sparks popped in his eyes. Sadie and Zia watched him warily.
After confirming that Carter had neither suddenly gained the urge to help Apophis destroy the world and convert everything into a formless chaos nor suddenly lost the ability to form memories, Sadie quickly donned the other cloud-cloak. The obelisk cast a writhing shadow onto the sea.
After Sadie had trapped the shadow of Apophis within the statue, a small, winged snake slithered out from her boots. A bit of screaming, cussing, and kicking later, it was determined that the snake was the voice from the sea, which wanted to come with them to see the world.
“Alright snake,” Sadie began. “we need a way out of the Duat, because otherwise Apophis will destroy the world.”
“No need. Here comes the sun barge now”
(meanwhile, setne got bound and sold off-screen, when he was skulking towards the trio)
