Chapter Text

“You’ve been moping like a sad puppy all morning and it’s becoming irritable,” announced Wednesday in her signature deadpan tone. “So either resolve it or I’ll have you locked in my trunk and buried where no one will ever find you.”

Enid sighed. “Most people would ask their friend why they’re sad, but you’re not most people.”

“I’m an Addams.”

“And an Addams thinks kidnapping or murder is the way to resolve their friends dilemma, apparently.”

“That’s because it does. My uncle Fester taught me how to dispose of the corpses of those who murdered Nero and now they have yet to bother me.”

At this point, Enid was hardly phased by Wednesday’s casual confessions to murder. Brushing it aside she said, “Aren’t you going to ask?”

Wednesday thought about it for a moment. Enid was certain that she was going to reply with a simple no and resume tapping away at her typewriter. Instead she said, “So, why are you moping like a sad puppy?”

“It’s almost the end of the school year.”

“And? Isn’t that meant to be exciting for ‘most people’?” Wednesday held up her hands for the quotation marks. “But then I must admit you are not most people.”

“I can’t tell if that’s a compliment or not.”

“Most people do not look like my worst nightmare and indulge in burdening my existence with it.”

“Insult. Got it.”

“Why does it bother you that school is almost over?”

“Because!” Enid threw up her hands and started to pace up and down their shared dorm room, but strayed from entering Wednesday’s side. “That means going home and because I’ve finally shifted that means that’s all I’m going to hear all summer and it’s all my parents are going to care about and I won’t get to be anything other than a one time thing , like, what if I can’t shift again and then what? I have to hear about how I could have been such a good wolf and how I’ve flopped at potential and then my parents will obsess over the fact I could have been a great wolf and then I’ll just be the wolf that shifted once and no one but you witnessed it and -”

“Enid.”

She halted.

“Your rambling makes my ears bleed and quite frankly wasn’t needed. If I’m to die because my head explodes, your voice is not what I want to be the last thing I hear.”

“You’re really bad at this whole friend thing.”

“You don’t wish to be defined by a single action and wish to avoid it rather than confront it. Murder would resolve that but I know you’d probably take your own life by accident or your own guilt would drive you to it. Or the gore would be too much and your poor little heart would give out. Either way it means you would be dead before the next semester and, as much as you’re a nuisance, I’d rather chance your return than have a roommate who would most likely be twice as bad as you. The last thing I need is a Bianca Barkley wannabe breathing the same air as me.”

“I don’t see where you’re going here.”

“Spend the summer at Addams Manor.”

“Wait.” Enid’s mind ran a hundred miles an hour. “Did you just invite me to spend the summer with you? Wednesday, are you OK? Should I send you to the nurse and make sure you aren’t infected with some happy fungus gas or whatever?”

“I am perfectly fine, Enid. I just want you to stop moping.”

Enid couldn’t help herself. Excitement ran like a wolf through her veins. Going against her better judgement, she leapt into Wednesday and wrapped her arms around her. As expected, Wednesday stiffened.

“OMG thank you! You’re the absolute best!”

“Let go or I’ll dispose of you myself and risk the Bianca Barkley replacement.”

Despite knowing deep down it was most likely an empty threat, Enid withdrew, but the grin remained. “I cannot believe we’re going to spend the entire summer together!” She gasped. Her heart raced anxiously. “Wait, this I’m not going to be a sacrifice for some cult, am I?”

“Don’t worry we only sacrifice during a blood moon or the eclipse.”

Enid’s heart settled. “Noted.”

“But there is one due at the end of August.”

“Wait, what?”

Enid was sure she caught the faintest glimpse of a strained smile across Wednesday’s face. Was that her attempt at a joke?

“Your sacrifice would be insignificant; they want blood and a tortured soul, not a rainbow dusted labrador. Puppies are too pure.”

Enid frowned. “Do you make a habit of sending mixed signals to your friends?”

“More like a hobby.”

“Got it.”

“Now, I must inform my parents who will, no doubt, be overly excited at your presence. Thing is already overjoyed and it’s sickening.”

Without another word, Wednesday went to sit at her desk, typing rapidly. Enid looked over at Thing who was perched at the end of her bed. He gave her a thumbs up.
