Christmas was usually Blaine’s favourite time of the year; even this year, with all the changes in his life, Christmas had still been mostly special. Something felt missing, someone, actually, felt missing to Blaine. Although he tried to deny it, and he wouldn’t admit it to anyone, or had been a lonely holiday season. Not just because he was single, but because it seemed like most people around him were coupled up and that meant his holiday plans often had him alone or third wheeling it.
Still, Blaine didn’t know how he’d ended up here. Here being a New Years Eve party, alone. Oh, and did he mention the party was at Sebastian Smythe’s? This would have been a good time to say he didn’t feel up to a party; it would have been understandable, all things considered. But if he was honest, he was curious. Curious about why he’d been invited. As he looked around Blaine could see many couples or potential couples of the night. Not necessarily for himself though. And not to mention Sebastian was the one hosting the party so surely there was someone, or multiple someone’s that had been invited to be his possible New Years midnight kiss; if not more.
After much dancing and extracting himself
from a conversation with his best friend Sam, Sam’s girlfriend, who happened to know Sebastian as well, Blaine headed to one of bar stations in the luxury penthouse. At least the food and drinks at the party were excellent, as he pointed out the food to a server, getting a small plate with finger foods and requested a fresh flute of champagne. The server/bartender was kind of cute and Blaine attempted to flirt with him. The servers eyes widened slightly as he looked past Blaine and at something behind him. Before he could turn around though, a voice broke through, and Blaine became aware why his flirting would go nowhere.
“Have you forgotten your Dalton training,” Sebastian teased lightly, “of engaging in polite conversation with your host? I didn’t even see you sneak in Killer.” He leaned back against the bar, turning his body towards Blaine, attention on him, but his position allowing him to see much of the space.
“Hello Sebastian,” Blaine acknowledged with a rueful smile. “How are you?”
“I can’t complain,” Sebastian replied. “Tonight’s going well, I think, so it should be a wonderful start to the new year. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.” He held out his own flute to be refilled.
Blaine looked around and nodded. “They do. A lot seem to be coupled up already,” he pointed out.
Sebastian seemed to consider this for a few moments; eyes scanning the room as he sipped his champagne. “I suppose they are. And you?”
Blaine laughed. “No. I’m not coupled up tonight. Single Pringle just mingling. Actually I’m sort of wondering why I’m here.”
Sebastian laughed as well. “No. No. I meant are you having a good time. I knew you were here alone. Or suspected you were. And you’re here because I invited you. In addition to many of our shared, and coupled, friends.”
Blaine smiled. “I’m having an okay time, considering. I thought maybe I was a pity invite. Since my couples friends are here and I am alone this holiday season.”
Sebastian stared at Blaine for a moment. “Better, worse, or the same as your holiday experiences this season?” He asked seriously. “And no. I’d never invite anyone, least of all you, out of pity. Besides why would I pity you?”
Blaine felt his cheeks flush slightly. “Ah, a bit better I guess. I suppose I could be completely alone tonight,” he admitted.
“Now that, I might pity,” Sebastian teased. “Or at the very least try and remedy.”
“So you did invite me out of pity,” Blaine replied.
Sebastian shook his head. “No. I invited you because it would be weird if I left my own party because you were free and not here.”
Blaine flushed more and ducked his head, shaking it slightly. “You’re still too much Sebastian. And so… out there.” He looked back up at Sebastian. “What about you? Big plans for midnight? Am I keeping you from someone?”
Sebastian laughed. “We will see what midnight brings, but I’m… optimistic which is kind of a first for me,” he admitted. “No, you’re not keeping me from anyone and even if you were, I wouldn’t care. Any guy in his right mind wouldn’t blame me for blowing him off when he saw you.”
“Sebastian, stop it.”
“Okay, so maybe he would blame me but I don’t care,” Sebastian admitted. He finished his champagne and held it out to be refilled. “I’m sorry; I have something else to take care of. Don’t leave without saying good bye alright?”
Blaine blinked at Sebastian and nodded his head, not quite understanding what had just happened. He watched as Sebastian crossed the room and approached a very good looking unfamiliar man. The shorter man turned back to the server with a shrug of his shoulders and shake of his head. “I’ll have another fill up please.”

The night was uneventful for Blaine after that. He tried not to keep tabs on Sebastian, tried not to obsess over this unknown man. He knew he wasn’t terribly successful when a tipsy Nick came up to him. And a very tipsy Nick was accompanied by a very drunk Jeff. Blaine couldn’t help but smile though at the way Nick took care of Jeff. And the way Jeff hung off Nick in his inebriated state as of Nick hung the moon. Which Blaine suspected Nick did, if you asked Jeff.
“Stop staring at him and just go over and ask him to dance or get a drink, or kiss him or something,” Nick said quietly as he nodded in Sebastian’s direction.
Sebastian was learning against the wall, mystery man more or less crowding him against it so Blaine shook his head. “Look at him. He doesn’t need me messing things up for him.”
Jeff drunkenly put his arm around Blaine and rested his head on top of Blaine’s. “Dancing is good. It’s fun. And Sebastian is a good dancer,” he slurred. “Kissing is fun too. I recommend it.” Then Jeff kissed Blaine’s cheek before turning to kiss Nick.
Nick chuckled as he pulled back from Jeff’s kiss. “Yes we know what you’d recommend Jeff. They are both fun.” His eyes followed Blaine’s. “That’s one of his college friends. I can’t remember his name.”
“Friend or some sort of ex?” Blaine questioned.
“Probably both,” Jeff said with a nod. “They’re getting on well and are both that ridiculous kind of good looking.”
“Then he definitely doesn’t need me getting in the way,” Blaine said. “Besides it’s almost midnight and once that’s done I’m going to head home. As it is it seems like most people are all partnered up for a midnight kiss,” he said softly with a shrug.
“Awe Blaine, I’ll kiss you a midnight,” Jeff said, planting another sloppy kiss to the shorter man’s cheek.
Blaine laughed and pulled back. “Thanks Jeff but you don’t have to do that. Kiss someone you really want to kiss. Someone who wants to be kissed by you,” he said with a pointed look at his friends.
Nick coughed loudly and tilted his head towards where Sebastian and his friend were now watching them. “Speaking of people who want to be kissed by you at midnight…” he trailed off.
Blaine looked over at Sebastian and his friend. “You can’t possibly think…” he trailed off aa his eyes met Sebastian’s.
“I more than think,” Nick whispered. “Someone seems a little out out by the attention Jeff is showing you and it’s not me.”
Blaine watched as Sebastian’s friend grinned at them and then clapped Sebastian on the shoulder before he walked away. Then Sebastian started to make his way towards Blaine, Nick, and Jeff.
“That’s my signal to go and take Jeff with me,” Nick said, putting an arm around Jeff and pulling him away.
“On a scale of 1-10 how drunk is Jeff and should I cut him off or is Nick taking care of him; even with the impromptu make out session with you.”
Blaine spluttered out a laugh. “That was not a make out session. Jeff is probably near 10 and Nick is tipsy too but is taking care of Jeff.”
“So what was it then to you?” Sebastian asked. He nodded his head. “It’s cute. The two of them, still after all this time. And tomorrow they’ll act like they don’t remember a thing.”
Blaine shook his head. “It’s kind of sad though too; that neither of feels like they can be something unless alcohol is involved.”
“Do you think that’s what it is?” Sebastian asked. “Or the fear of losing the already great thing they already have.”
Blaine hummed, pondering that scenario. “It is hard. Losing something, someone, who means so much. Especially when you’re pushing for more.”
Sebastian nodded, shoving his hands in his pockets and rocking on his heels. “Sometimes you just can’t help wanting more. That’s when you know, this person is… special,” Sebastian said.
Blaine nodded. “I think they both know though, how special they are. And that makes them lucky.”
“Was that what the kissing was about? Showing Nick how lucky he is,” Sebastian asked.
“You are pretty concerned about the kissing,” Blaine said with a raised eyebrow. “I think Jeff just wanted me to know that I didn’t need to be worried about not having anyone to kiss tonight. And to make sure I didn’t leave before midnight because of it.”
“Hey, hey “ Sebastian said taking his hands out of his pockets and putting his hands on Blaine’s arms, “I said you couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”
Blaine tilted his head and looked at Sebastian. “I would have tried. If you weren’t busy with someone.”
“Busy with someone?” Sebastian parroted.
“That guy. Your friend that just left.”
Sebastian’s cheeks almost seemed to tint pink for a moment. “Oh. Oh. That’s no one. I mean he’s someone and a friend, but no one special. Maybe, maybe if there wasn’t someone…,” he trailed off.
“Oh,” Blaine swallowed. There was someone then. “I guess that makes sense.”
Sebastian’s phone dinged and he looked at Blaine apologetically. “I’ve got to announce it is almost midnight.”
“Alright,” Blaine nodded as Sebastian made his way to a mock stage to share the time. Blaine moved towards the small office that was housing coats and boots. He’d just found his when he heard Sebastian clear his throat.
“Planning on pulling a Cinderella and leaving before midnight? Or are you really concerned about not having someone to kiss?” Sebastian asked,
leaning against the door frame, legs crossed over each other and his arms crossed over his chest.
“I don’t really need to stick around and see everyone pair up,” Blaine countered. “Shouldn’t you be finding your someone?”
Sebastian stared at Blaine, eyes narrowing as he tilted his head. “Why do you think I haven’t ?”
Blaine watched as Sebastian moved slowly towards him. “Because you’re here with me.”
“Funny how that happened huh,” Sebastian nodded. “See you’re not the only one who doesn’t exactly want to see everyone else all paired up. I don’t have someone to kiss in sixty seconds either, but I do have someone I want to kiss.”
“You do?” Blaine swallowed.
“I told you it wasn’t a pity invite; kind of the opposite. You’re the one person I wanted to spend tonight with.” Sebastian took Blaine’s arms and wrapped them around his neck. He put his hands on Blaine’s waist. “I’ve kind of wanted this for a long time,” he said as people started counting down.
Blaine nodded. “Me too. But I was afraid and I couldn’t admit it.”
“Are you afraid now?”
Blaine shook his head no before pressing his lips against Sebastian’s. Neither really noticed the cheers from the rest of the penthouse as the new year descended upon them.
“What happens next?” Blaine asked once he pulled back from the kiss and caught his breath. His cheeks were flushed and that exciting rush of electricity that came with chemistry tingled under his skin.
“Whatever we want,” Sebastian grinned.
