Summary:

Kohaku's work gets in the way of a date with Aira.

Notes:

hey y'all! i'm here with another kohaai fic again! when i made the last fic, i was pretty new to enstars and didn't really know much about their lore and stuff, so there were some errors about the stuff i wrote there. hopefully this time will be a lot more accurate in terms of canon! this includes their roommates and whatnot. last time i made kohaai live together but for the sake of canon, they will be with their roommates here! ^^

also i was supposed to publish this on dec but i forgot so, apologies ;(

(also hiiro is only mentioned but i couldn't find the tag for that. and trans aira isn't actually mentioned in the fic but he is!)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It was a typically cold December night, and Kohaku had just finished doing some 'work'. Tired and exhausted with his body aching everywhere, he quietly walks into his shared dorm, slightly grimancing at the bright Christmas decorations outside other dorms he walked by. ‘Even now, I just can't get a rest, huh?’ He thinks to himself, slightly annoyed at the brightness as he opened the door.

As he enters the room and closes it behind him, he noticed his roommate, Jun, was nowhere to be seen. As he expected. He probably went out on a date with his boyfriend again. It is the 24th after all. But it was quite late, so maybe he ended up staying somewhere else. He guesses it's Christmas already too, since it's around 2 AM now. Kohaku was never really one to celebrate Christmas when he was younger, and has always disliked the idea of it. But now that he has grown more as a person and has more freedom than ever, he does think it's a lot more bearable now.

Especially with his growing list of friends, and he slowly finds himself getting oddly fond of seeing people and how they celebrate with their family, loved ones and partners. Kohaku sits down on the bottom bunk bed and looks out absentmindedly. Partners, huh...

”Ah!”

He suddenly gasps and frantically looks for his phone. He finds it under his pillow for some reason and he almost gets the urge to punch himself for forgetting his phone there. He opens the device and the lock screen of his boyfriend, Aira, shines on his grimacing face looking at the five missed calls and 20 messages from him. ”Shit, shit, shit.” He mumbles under breath, and he knows if Rinne was there, he would call out his 'fowl way of speaking'.

He and Aira were supposed to go out 2 hours ago to watch some fireworks together. But he completely got carried away with ‘work.’

Kohaku fumbles with his phone and calls Aira back immediately, putting the phone on his ear. After a few rings, his boyfriend finally picks up. “Rabu-han? Sorry for calling back so—”

“Kohakuchhiiii! Where were you?!” Aira's panicked voice rings through his ears and cuts him off, and before Kohaku could say something again, Aira speaks. “I-I was—”

“I was so worried about you! Are you back in your dorm now?”

“Rabu-han, I'm oka—”

“Don't say anything! I'm coming to your dorm right now!”

And with that, his boyfriend hung up. Kohaku has always loved everything about Aira, but he wasn't so sure about this pushy side of his. He appreciates the concern but he wasn't some baby that couldn't take care of himself. Like what most people see him as. He sighs and messages Aira a few times, explaining that he's okay. But guessing how he wasn't replying anymore, he must be on his way already.

Kohaku sighs again and closes his phone. He feels so tired suddenly. He feels so physically drained, and he gets the urge to just lay down and close his eyes. But he remembers he hasn't even changed clothes yet. He can't see Aira like this, not when he's still wearing the clothes he wore to do ‘work’. So he fights his sleepiness and stands up from the bed to change into fresh, clean clothes.

He decided to wear his casual winter attire, since it was also pretty cold. But as he was changing his top, he heard a knock on the door. ‘That was fast.’ He thought to himself as he pulls down the white turtleneck down his torso, but didn't put his beige jacket on and ran to the door to open it.

The door opened to a sad and worried looking Aira, and Kohaku immediately felt his cold heart melt at the sight and pulls him to a hug, not caring about the bright Christmas lights blinding him. He felt Aira's short arms wrap around his back too, reciprocating his warm hug. “I was so worried about you, y'know!” He scolds him on his chest.

Kohaku pulls away to look at his boyfriend's face but keeps his arms around him. “I know, I'm sorry.” He apologizes and kisses his forehead, a sweet and loving gesture he learned from him. Kohaku then pulls away completely much to Aira's dismay and leads him inside the dorm, a place much warmer than the cold hallway full of bright lights.

“Rabu-han. Sorry about our date.” Kohaku apologizes again after closing the door, watching as Aira sits on the bottom bunk bed and pats the space next to him, mentioning him to sit beside him, which he does so silently. “It's fine. I'm just glad you're okay. Where were you though?” Aira asks him, a lot calmer than their phone call earlier but still has a tone of worry.

Kohaku's eyes slightly darken, recalling what he was doing with Madara for the past few hours. And how gruesome he can really be. He could tell Aira knew where he was, guessing from his silence as it's quite a heavy topic for him, but he confirms it by answering.

“Just... work.”

They both know what this work is.

Aira stays silent from his answer until he speaks up again. “Ya don't need to be so worried everytime. I'm used to this.” He tries to comfort his boyfriend, but it unintentionally sounded like he was mad. He really should work on that.

But still Aira doesn't say anything. Suddenly, he felt him rest his head on his shoulder, which slightly startled him admittedly. “I get it. I mean, I don't get it. But I understand you can't always make time because of your work.” Aira fumbles with his words and Kohaku can tell he's trying not to sound disappointed about their date. “We can always go out later in the morning. Or even on New Year's Eve. So don't apologize too much, okay?”

“Mhm.” Kohaku smiles at the thought. Thought he didn't like Christmas too much, he did love New Year's. He loved the thought of celebrating a new year to come, despite back then he thought his situation will never get better. But he should've known better. And now he knows being with Aira like this is will forever be the happiest he'll ever feel. “I'm sure you're tired and hungry, though!” Aira suddenly pulls away from him with a bright smile.

“I can ask Hiiro to come here and bring us food, if you don't mind! I'm sure he wouldn't mind at least, hehe.” Aira giggles as he gets ready to call Hiiro. Ah, that redhead. Kohaku has always thought he was pretty. And as good as food sounded right now, he wanted to be alone with Aira. “He can come by tomorrow. I'm more tired than hungry.” He rubbed his eyes sleepily.

Kohaku takes Aira's phone from his hands and puts it aside, which he didn't seem to mind. Then he lays down on his bed and takes his boyfriend down with him, wrapping his arms around his neck and leading him to lay on top of him. “Tired, hmm? Alright then, we can talk more in the morning.” Aira fully lays down on top of Kohaku and brushes some of his pink hair away from his face with a smile. “Good night, Kohakucchi. Merry Christmas!” Aira gives him one last forehead kiss before resting his head on his chest.

“Mhm. Good night and merry christmas, Rabu-han.”
