Chapter Text

“Shit,” Ava thought, as she walked hurriedly down the street. She was focused on her phone, looking at the texts from the past few minutes.

JC <3: Ava, we need to talk.

Ava: Sure, what’s up?

JC <3: The past couple months have been the best in my life but…

Ava: JC, you’re scaring me

JC <3: But I think I need to take a break.

JC <3: Don’t be discouraged, Ava. You are an amazing person, and deserve the world.

JC <3: But I’m not sure that I’m the person who can give you that.

JC <3: I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. I just couldn’t hide it anymore.

JC <3: Ava?

Ava’s fingertips hovered over the keyboard, ready to write something, anything. She couldn’t find the words. Usually, she was talkative, but now she couldn’t even say “yes”. JC, the boy whom she loved, had broken up with her, and she didn’t know what to do.

Frantically, she pressed on his contact with her thumb, and pressed call.

CALLING: JC <3

She pressed the phone to her ear, trying to listen for the phone to pick up. It rang once, twice, then three times. Ava waited and waited, but JC never picked up. Sighing, she looked up at the skyscrapers next to her. New York was treating her well as an up and coming artist.

It all fell into place, being discovered in Spain after singing a cover of “Requiem” from Dear Evan Hansen . Her popularity grew so quickly, she barely had time to pack her bags to travel to New York to star in the Broadway revival of Dear Evan Hansen.

Sparks had flown between Ava and her new costar, JC, who played Evan Hansen. After rehearsing together, they realized that they were perfect for each other, or at least, that’s what Ava had thought. It had surprised her when JC had announced his departure from the show only five months into performing, for a supposed ‘work conflict’.

Now, Ava knew why he actually left.

Ava turned onto the street where she walked so many times before. She gripped her backpack strap, slung across one shoulder, attempting to make it home before she burst into tears. Ava’s gaze fell back down to her shoes. She was still listening to the ringing when it happened.

Suddenly, Ava’s body was flung across the intersection. A car had run into her, sending her flying into another car, rolling off its windshield. She hit the ground with a groan. Then, the car somehow ran over her.

It had all happened in a matter of seconds. 1 second, the car first hit her. 2 seconds, she landed on the second car’s windshield. 3 seconds, the second car rolled over her. At each impact, she had felt something crack. Her ribs, a leg, an arm. Ava laid on the ground, the horns of road rage roaring around her. She just looked up at the stars, inspecting how pretty and intricately designed each constellation was.

She heard JC’s voice vaguely next to her.

“Ava, Ava! Talk to me! I heard horns and brakes. Please talk to me, let me know you’re okay.”

She ignored him. Even if she wanted to talk, she couldn’t move. Shit, she couldn’t move! Ava started to panic, breathing faster and faster, trying to move her legs, arms, or even her pinky toe. She just wanted to move something.

Then, Ava felt a hand on her head.

“Sweetie, calm down,” a soothing voice said. The man it belonged to was middle-aged, with glasses. He had gray hair and a slightly receding hairline. He was wearing the thingy that Priests wore, black with the white tab in the collar.

The man looked up. “You, call 911, if they haven’t been called already. This girl needs to get to a hospital.”

His gaze fell back to Ava. “You’re going to be okay, young lady. We’ve got you. God has you in His hands.”

Ava knew he was lying. He had literally just told someone to call 911. If that’s not something wrong, then Ava didn’t know what was.  Ava’s head lolled to the side. She was tired, so tired. She just wanted to fall asleep. Yes, sleep sounded. Good.

Ava closed her eyes bit by bit, smiling softly that she was able to finally rest. She barely felt the man shaking her shoulder.

“Ava, come on, Ava, wake up!” someone was yelling. Ava’s eyes snapped open, and she tried to crane her neck to see what was happening, but something was restricting the motion. Above her, a woman with short, curly, dark brown hair smiled kindly at her. She wore a dark blue uniform, EMT and FDNY blazoned on her chest. A badge was displayed on her sleeve, but Ava did not know it. In fact, she didn’t know anything.

The woman looked up from her, and yelled, “Lilith, get the stretcher!”

The woman then removed her hands from Ava’s chest. Ava realized that her shirt had been ripped open, and her stomach felt the cold air. Ava heard wheels squeaking on the pavement, and another woman knelt next to her. Ava assumed it was Lilith. She had high cheekbones and long brown hair.

“Should we put her on the spinal?” Lilith asked.

The woman nodded. “Father here said Ava couldn’t move. Signs of a spinal injury.”

“Alright,” Lilith said. “Count of three. One, two, three.”

On three, Ava felt herself being rolled onto her side, and a hard board was placed against her back. Damn it, part of her thought. She’d really wanted to be on the comfy stretcher. Something was strapped against Ava’s forehead.

“Collar?” Lilith asked and the other woman nodded. Then, Ava felt something slip under her neck, and it supported her neck. The little mobility she had was then taken away, and the only things Ava could see were the stars and people’s faces flashing in and out of her vision.

“One, two, three,” Lilith counted again, and Ava was lifted up, and carried over to the stretcher. Ava was strapped down to the stretcher, and pushed into the back of an ambulance. It smelled like chemicals and the hospital. Ava wrinkled her nose at the smell.

When the doors shut, Ava heard the woman say, “Mary, step on it!”

“Got it Camila,” someone, who Ava assumed was Mary said, and the ambulance took off, heading toward the hospital.

“Okay, Ava, I’m just going to give you some oxygen and some morphine to help with the pain,” Camila said, nodding to Lilith to do something.

Ava tried to say, I’m fine, only a few scrapes, but Lilith slipped on an oxygen mask before she finished, and her speech was slurred, so it sounded more like, I ffffffnnnn ooooooolllllyyyy ewwwwww crrrrrepssss. Whatever Camila and Lilith heard, they did not have a reaction to it. Ava felt a needle slip into the crook of her arm, and a cold substance entered her bloodstream. Instantly, Ava felt better. She could’ve walked out of the ambulance if she wanted to. But, she didn’t.

The ambulance pulled to a stop, and Camila and Lilith stood and opened the doors. Suddenly, Ava was surrounded by doctors and nurses. As she was pulled out of the ambulance, more people grabbed the stretcher and helped pull it into the ER.

“Ava Silva, 22-year-old female, no past medical issues I could find,” Camila was explaining to a doctor. “Car accident. Eyewitnesses say she walked into oncoming traffic while looking at her phone. Potential spinal and multiple breaks. Lots of blood loss. We lost her heartbeat and I had to perform CPR.”

Ava was taken into the hospital. She watched the white ceiling pass by until she was parked in an open area. There was another countdown, and Ava was transferred onto yet another bed, but she was still on the uncomfortable board.

Then, Ava saw her. Hair tied back into a low bun, freckles and sun kissed skin, and mouth pulled into a thin line.

“Beatrice, what do you think?” a doctor asked.

“Multiple contusions, probably fractures, maybe internal bleeding, and collapsed lung, possibly, depending on how severe the crash was,” Beatrice said.

“Good,” the doctor said. “What should we do?”

“I’d recommend surgery to repair broken bones, and treatment for other issues.”

“Alright, let’s do that! The surgeon’s already prepped and ready.”

Ava felt another needle slip into her arm.

Ava didn’t know if this was her being crazy, but before she blacked out, she muttered, “You’re really pretty.”

DEAR EVAN HANSEN STAR IN CAR CRASH

By Jay Winn

January 19, 8:30 PM EST

Ava Silva, 22, the new star of Broadway’s revival of Dear Evan Hansen has reportedly been in a car crash. The young star rose to fame after performing “Requiem” in Global Got Talent and winning a golden buzzer. She was nearly immediately signed for a revival of the show on Broadway.

Silva was walking down 7th Avenue earlier this evening when she accidentally walked into oncoming traffic. The reason why Silva walked into the traffic is unknown, but witnesses claim she was looking at her phone beforehand, which could have played a role in her accident. After the crash took place, someone caught the aftermath on their phone camera.

WATCH IT HERE

As shown in the video, a man comes to help Silva, who has now been identified as Father Vincent Guetarra, a priest at a local church. His actions may have been the difference between life and death for Silva.

Later in the video, FDNY Paramedic and EMT Camila Rodriguez is shown performing CPR on Silva. At this point, some people decided to form a wall to prevent photographs and videos to be taken of Silva, and the video ends.

The Dear Evan Hansen show has posted about Silva. “We are receiving updates about our Zoe Murphy, Ava Silva, and so far, she is doing great. She is alive and currently in the hospital. We will keep you updated.” The show said via Instagram.

Everyone who is a fan of Silva should keep her in your hearts and prayers over the next few days. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery!

Notes:

Wow, first fanfiction out of the way! I have no clue how long this is going to be, but I *do* want it to be a slow burn. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
A few notes about this part:
- Yes, I did make Camila the lead EMT because I think she'd fit the part the best
- Yes, there will be a "news article" at the end of each part, describing in short what happened in the chapter.
- No, there is not a regular upload schedule. Right now is uploading whenever I want.
- Yes, I do plan to add more chapters so don't let the 1/1 fool you!
