North Dakota was resting by the window. He wore a thick turtleneck, with an NDSU hat. He wore dark blue jeans and gray slippers with red zig zags. His dark hair was tied into a braid that trailed down his back. He sat in his armchair from home.
His room in the statehouse was identical to all the others-meaning they all had huge windows. North had brought his favorite chair with him to the move and tucked it right under said windows. It was the perfect spot. He could sit and watch the birds fly or the snow fall.
His chair stood out like a Loon on a lake sunrise. It was made with thick material that grandparents always had for couches and chairs. It was faded brown with embroidered red flowers. He had brought the chairs mate and the matching foot rest with him. The best part about the chair though? It was big enough for two.
It also helped that despite North Dakota’s height- he was all limb and not a lot of muscle. He could tuck himself into himself just fine to fit another person beside him. There was a certain someone that he wished was in the chair with him right now.
North felt a soft ache in his chest. He wished Minnesota was there. North knew that he could call his fellow midwestern state and he would come with no questions asked. He’d cuddle him too, but it would be platonic.
Just hugging to keep warm dontcha know?
He wanted the extra warmth- and that special feeling ya get being in someone’s you loves arms. But North didn’t want friend cuddles. He wanted romantic cuddles from Minnesota. North squinted out at the snow. The sun had set; leaving the world in the blue hue of snow descending to the ground. It was peaceful. The snowflakes were thick as mommas home made cookies. The absolute perfect snow for making snowmen. North sighed, a soft smile coming to his face.
There was a knock at his door. North hummed and didn’t look away from the view.
“It’s open.” He called. He turned to see his new visitor.
Speak of the devil himself- Minnesota walked in with two steaming mugs. He wore a colorful Norwegian sweater with blue jeans. Him and North were wearing matching slippers. Minnesota had let his hair do whatever it pleased for the day- meaning his blond waves were out and laying down his shoulders.
“I brought you some hot chocolate to keep you warm.” Minnesota said. North felt himself melt internally. He slumped.
“Oh, you didn’t have to do that.” North stood up and took the gift. He took a deep inhale. Then he paused.
Oh-
He raised an eyebrow and smirked at Minnesota.
“There’s Irish whiskey in here, isn’t there?” He asked.
“Oh ya sure. I want only the best for ya North.” Minnesota replied.
He sipped his drink. North held his cup with both hands. He raised it and took a swig. That swirl of sweet chocolate with that burn of whisky? Oh that was straight heaven it was.
“Oh you are too good to me ‘Sota.” North moaned. He took another sip. Minnesota beamed. As the two drank together, they both turned to the windows and watched.
North wished they could stay like this forever.
Once the two had finished, Minnesota took their cups and put ‘em by the bedside table.
“Mind if I stay for a bit?” He asked.
“Oh for sure, I’d love that.” North replied. It was true, he would. Minnesota walked up to his friend, and took both hands in his own. North turned all shades of red and looked up at Minnesota.
Minnesota shrugged with a smile. He guided the two of them back to North’s favorite chair. Minni sat down first, and then pulled North into his side. He wrapped his arms around North's middle and nuzzled into his neck.
“I needed my North time.” Minnesota said. He gave North a soft squeeze. North’s heart fluttered at the phrase. It wasn’t the first nor the last he’d hear it.
His cheeks were burning at the cuddling. The peace it brought him being held by Minnesota was indescribable. Nothing could go wrong while he lay in his arms.
North rested his hands over Minnesotas and leaned back into the cubby state. Minnesota with his bear belly and tree trunk arms made the perfect pillow. He smelled of pine and oak.
“I’ll take all the Minnesota time I can get, Don’tcha know.”
