Luz’s hand shook as she hovered over the “confirm” button. She scanned all the information again. A limited-edition Good Witch Azura ring, based on Hecate, with dazzling diamonds on the band leading up to a beautiful and bright pearl, cut into the shape of a crescent moon, currently sat in her cart. The shipping address was right. The card number was right. She took a deep breath and clicked “confirm.”
“Ooooooh, mi bebé is growing up!” Camila squealed from over Luz’s shoulder as she pulled her daughter into a tight hug. She pulled back for a moment, looking at her daughter with a worried gaze. “Luz, why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”
Luz gazed into her mother’s eyes with a worry of her own, her face paler than normal. “This isn’t too soon, right?” She fiddled with her hands. “I mean, I love Amity. I know I want to spend the rest of my life with her, but…”
“Luz,” Camila said, sitting next to her daughter and picking up her hands. “This is a big step for any relationship. You and Amity might be long-distance, but you’ve been together for years. I’ve seen the looks on your faces when you’re together. You two love each other very much.” She ruffled Luz’s hair. “You can do this, mija.”
Luz nodded, color returning to her face as her worry transformed into confidence. “You’re right! We’ve been through so much already. I want to tackle the rest of my life with her by my side.” She stood up, pumping her fist in the air. “I’ve got this!”
—
“I don’t got this!”
Luz dropped her head to the table, pushing aside all of her scratched-out notes. After days of trying to figure out the perfect engagement plans, she still had nothing. She huffed as she looked at the restaurants she had listed. The fancy ones served food that Amity hated from how often her mother served them as a kid, and the non-fancy ones weren’t fancy enough!
She sighed, tabbing over to the shipping information for the ring and refreshing it. Expected Delivery: February 10th. She looked down at her calendar, the number eleven staring at her mockingly. No ring. No restaurant. No fiancée.
She dropped her head onto the table again, muttering something before an alarm went off. With a grunt, she peeled herself away from her planning, reluctantly making her way to class for the day.
Her focus was fleeting. She was either drawing doodles instead of taking notes, trying to balance her pencil on her nose instead of doing the assigned reading, or frantically refreshing the shipping information for the ring hoping to see “delivered” at the top.
It wasn't until she had left for home that the shipping information was finally updated. Luz’s eyes widened as she realized it finally said something different. As she took in the words, though, her world came crashing down around her. New estimated delivery: February 24th. She sighed, dropping into her car and driving home slowly. She stepped into the house, downtrodden as her mind swirled around the same implications: she wouldn’t have a good surprise for her girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. She had wanted nothing more than to make the day special for Amity. Her girlfriend was flying up to see her, and she had nothing. The delicious smells coming from the kitchen did little to help her mood. She walked past the food, past her mom, and directly into her room, where she collapsed onto her bed and started crying.
—
Later that night, Luz called Amity, hoping her girlfriend could help her sour mood. When Amity’s face filled her phone’s screen, she couldn’t help the smile that formed. She cleared her throat, her voice still a little scratchy from crying earlier that day. “Hey, Ams.”
“Hey, Luz. I missed you today.” Amity smiled at her girlfriend, though it quickly faded in favor of a frown. “Hey, are you okay? You look like you’ve been crying.”
Luz sighed, running her hand through her hair. “I just… I had this big surprise planned for you for Valentine’s day, but it all came crumbling down…”
Amity quirked an eyebrow at her for a moment before humming. “Well, that’s alright.”
Luz looked up, gazing at her phone. “What?”
Amity shrugged. “The only thing I want for Valentine’s day is to spend time with you. Besides, my flight doesn’t land until 6 anyway, we wouldn’t have much time for anything other than cuddles. We can just spend time at your place.” She smiled, a blush forming on her cheeks. “I just want to be there with you, Luz. I don’t need anything else.”
Luz felt a weight lift off her shoulders. “I love you so much, Amity.”
“I love you too, dork. Now!” Amity shifted in her bed, propping her phone up as she pulled out her laptop. “I was reading this Azura fic, and you will not believe how wild this gets!”
The rest of the night passed quickly, Luz losing track of time as her girlfriend lifted all her woes away. It wasn’t until Amity had passed out on her bed, phone still on, that Luz realized how tired she was. She placed her phone so it was facing her when she laid down and blew a kiss to the sleeping girl on the other side.
“Goodnight, Ams. I love you.”
Soft snores were the only reply she received as she fell asleep.
—
The next day, Luz and her mom walked up to their house laughing, food from their favorite restaurant in bags as Luz told her mom about some of the things she and Amity had found the night before.
When they made it to the front door, Luz almost tripped over the small box sitting on their welcome mat.
Camila bent down to pick it up. “Mija, it’s for you.”
Luz looked at the box, dumbfounded. “I don’t think I have anything arriving today?” She traded her mom the food for the box, going to the kitchen table to open up the package. She let out a huge gasp, nearly dropping the box as she processed what she was seeing.
It was here. In her hands. The ring. Hecate’s ring. Soon to (hopefully) be Amity’s ring. The one that wasn’t supposed to arrive for another twelve days.
She looked up at her mom with wide eyes, holding the box with a death grip. “I gotta make a plan!”
Before she knew it, Sunday morning rolled around, and Luz was no closer to getting anything booked than she was anytime the week prior. Every restaurant was booked, and to top it off, Amity’s flight had been delayed by an hour. She dropped her head onto the table as she wracked her brain for ideas.
She needed something fast, but cute. Simple, but sweet. And, as much as she hated to admit it, cheap, but still nice (the ring had taken a larger toll on her bank account than she had realized). She chewed her lip for a few minutes before it hit her. It was so obvious now. How did she not realize sooner?
“I’m going out mom, I’ll be back later!”
—
Luz drummed her fingers on the steering wheel as she waited for Amity outside the airport. When she spotted her girlfriend’s lavender hair, she jumped out of her seat and rushed over, picking Amity up and spinning her around before peppering her face with kisses.
She planted one longer kiss on Amity’s cheek before nuzzling against her shoulder. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Ams.”
Amity threaded her fingers through Luz’s hair, humming happily. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Luz.” She slowly pushed her girlfriend away, looking at her with a teasing smirk. “Now, as much as I love you, I would absolutely love to get out of this Connecticut cold.” She suppressed a shiver as she made her way toward Luz’s car. “It’s the only thing that Bonesborough does right is the weather.”
“Oh, shit! Right, sorry I forgot. Your California blood isn’t used to real winter.” Luz tossed a wink Amity’s way, laughing as her girlfriend rolled her eyes.
After loading up Amity’s luggage and starting their way back to Luz’s house, Luz glanced at her out of the corner of her eye. She reached over, taking Amity’s hand, and smiling giddily. “I’ll never get over how much better it is when you’re actually here.”
Amity smiled, squeezing Luz’s hand. “Everything’s always better when I’m with you.”
Luz sighed happily, the moment ending abruptly as her stomach growled loudly. She blushed, looking over at Amity for a moment with an embarrassed smile. “So, uh, I wasn’t able to get anything fancy booked for dinner tonight. Is there anything you want to eat?”
Amity blushed, looking out the window. “It might not be the most romantic, but…” She looked at Luz sheepishly. “Can we get burgers?”
Luz laughed, already knowing where to go. “Your wish is my command, sweet potato.”
Not too long after, they were seated at a booth in the much-busier-than-expected restaurant where her friend Gus worked. Best burgers in town, hands down, Luz boasted. Gus brought their food swiftly and smiled at the two as he pulled out a candle for them.
He shrugged. “It’s not the fanciest, but it’s something!” Gus lit the candle, then left the couple to enjoy their meal.
Amity took a bite out of her burger, practically melting when it hit her tongue. “Yeah, yep.” She hummed happily as she swallowed her bite. “This was a great decision.”
Luz laughed, taking a bite of her own food. “Wasn’t how I thought tonight’s dinner was going to go, but you’re right, I don’t think I’d rather be anywhere else than here with you right now.”
The two talked about their plans for Amity’s visit while they ate, though Luz had to bite her cheek every time she wanted to talk about the surprise she had planned. After they paid and left, Luz turned the car on but waited in their spot for a moment. The drive home would only be about ten minutes.
“So, Amity,” Luz started, turning to look at her girlfriend. “I know you said that it was alright if today was just us, and I’ve already had a blast just getting to see you and have dinner, but, um…” She blushed, eyes locked on to the bright amber that looked back at her. “I have a little surprise set up at home for you.”
Amity looked at her nervously. “I’m not going to cry, am I?”
Luz shook her head. “Nope. Not a single tear. It’s a sweet surprise, you’re going to love it!”
With that, they made their way back home, nervous excitement fluttering around in her stomach. As she parked in the driveway, she texted her mom that they made it. She got out of the car and helped Amity out before grabbing her girlfriend’s luggage. They made their way to the front door, and Luz stopped them.
She shuffled nervously from foot to foot for a moment. “So, uh, your surprise is in the living room, but I want to lead you in there.” She grinned mischievously at Amity. “Close your eyes?”
Amity rolled her eyes with a smirk before closing them. “This better be worth it, Noceda.”
Luz swallowed down her nerves as she opened the door. “I hope it is.”
She set Amity’s luggage to the side, guiding her girlfriend forward as she took a few steading breaths. She stepped behind Amity, looking around to make sure everything was in place. “Okay, open your eyes.”
So Amity did, and what she saw took her breath away. Draped around the room, giving it a magical feel, were strings of fairy lights, all highlighting a single banner draped across the wall. Will you be the Hecate to my Azura? Underneath the banner, Luz had gotten some of Amity’s favorite chocolates and a white cat stuffie that looked back at them with bright blue eyes.
Amity turned around, confused for a moment until she saw Luz kneeling down in front of her. As she realized what was happening, tears sprang to her eyes.
Luz cleared her throat, pulling out a small box. “Amity, these last few years have been the best of my life.” She smiled, opening the box up to reveal the ring. “I have no idea what my future holds, but it would be a dream come true to have you there with me. So,” Luz cleared her throat, “Amity Blight, will you marry me?”
“Oh my god, Luz!” Amity jumped forward, wrapping her arms around Luz and pulling her tight, sniffling as happy tears sprang from her eyes.
Luz squeezed back, unable to contain the smile that broke out across her face. “So is that a yes, or?”
Amity pulled back, rolling her eyes as she wiped away the tears that had spilled. “Yes, you dork.”
Luz beamed at her girlfriend, taking her hand and slowly sliding the ring onto Amity’s finger. Amity admired it for a moment before pulling Luz into a searing kiss, which Luz leaned into happily. They only pulled apart at the sound of a click, both turning to see Camila standing there with a camera and a smile, tears in her eyes before she pulled them both into a crushing hug.
Later that night, Luz and Amity lay next to each other in bed, both admiring the ring on her finger. Amity nudged her girlfriend lightly. “You said I wasn’t going to cry.”
Luz shrugged, her cheeks starting to hurt from smiling so much. “I may have lied.”
Amity scoffed, turning to her girlfriend with a laugh and kissing her cheek. “I love you so much, Luz.”
Luz leaned forward, kissing Amity tenderly. She gazed into her girlfriend’s beautiful eyes, the butterflies from when they first met still going just as crazy. “I love you too, Amity.” She ran her thumb over the ring. “Always and forever.” She leaned in for one last kiss before plopping back onto the bed, pulling Amity into a cuddle. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Amity snuggled up to Luz, her head resting in the crook of her neck as she hummed happily, looking down at the ring again. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
