Chapter 1: Prologue
Chapter Text
It was a lovely day in Primp Town. Cicadas chirped in the trees and a warm breeze gently rustled the grass. The sun shone down on Primp Magic School, where a group of students were preparing for the last day of school before the summer holidays.
Klug, as per usual, had his nose stuck in a book in the corner of the room. Sig was actually early to class for once, and was mesmerized by a line of ants crawling across the windowsill. Raffina was also present, having just dropped off some papers on Miss Accord's desk. It was a relatively peaceful morning. However, that wasn't going to last long.
"Guys, guys! Look what came in the mail!"
Amitie burst into the room in a flurry of colour and sound, waving an envelope wildly above her head.
"We'd be able to look if you'd stop waving it around!"
Raffina strolled over to Amitie and snatched the envelope from her, taking a peek at the letter inside. She began to read it aloud to herself, her voice growing more and more incredulous with every line she read.
"Congratulations, you are the lucky winner of our grand opening prize draw. You and three guests are formally invited to the Puyo Oaisis Hotel and Resort for a free, 5 day vacation with all expenses paid for by the hotel. We hope to see you soon. Amitie, what did you do?"
Amitie laughed and took her letter back from Raffina. "I saw an advert in the news for a chance to win a free vacation, so I entered, just for fun! I never thought I'd actually win!"
Klug rolled his eyes. "To this day, your dumb luck continues to surprise me."
"Puyo Oasis?" Asked Sig, who had apparently decided this was more interesting than the ants on the windowsill.
"Yeah! It's a new hotel that just opened up near Lemres' town. It's supposed to be really nice, and there's a huge pool, and I was thinking that we could all go together since it's nearly summer break!"
"Sure." Said Sig, nonchalant as ever.
"Well, it would be nice to work on my tan. And being waited on hand and foot at a fancy hotel wouldn't hurt either, la-ti-da!" Added Raffina.
"W-wait, you guys aren't even going to think about this first?" Butted in Klug. "I mean, we'll have to pack, arrange transport-"
"So, let's go tommorow! We'll meet outside the school at 10, okay?"
"Wait-"
"I'll have to buy some more suntan lotion, oh, and a new bathing suit…"
"Guys!"
But Klug couldn't get a word in edgeways, as the morning bell cut him off.

Chapter Text
"Yippee! We finally made it!"
The group stood outside a grand building adorned with a large sign identifying it as the 'Puyo Oasis Hotel and Resort'. Two marble columns supported the entrance to reception, on top of which sat a huge statue of a sun puyo.
"You're lucky that bus showed up when it did, or we could have been stuck out in the desert." Klug grumbled, muttering something under his breath about 'dumb luck' and 'plot convenience'.
"Yes, well, we're here now, so let's stop standing around and go inside!" Raffina had brought with her three massive bags, which she was carrying with ease even though all of them looked like they could explode at a moment's notice.
"What's all that stuff for anyways, Raffina? We're only staying for a couple days." Amitie only had one suitcase and a backpack, which were both sensibly sized.
"A proper lady must always be prepared for anything, Amitie! I've packed everything I could possibly need on this vacation!"
The group gave their luggage to the bellhops (the one who took Raffina's bags almost fell over, but managed to save themself) and then wandered into reception.
"Woah." Said Sig, looking around in wonder.
"Woah indeed!" Added Amitie. "This place is wicked cool!"
The reception was a massive room with vaulted ceilings that supported chandeliers made from a mixture of sea glass and crystals. The walls weren't actually walls but were instead open walkways supported by columns that let a refreshing summer breeze blow through the building. The centrepiece was a fountain shaped like two stone puyo which spewed water through the air in a majestic arc.
"The reception isn't that impressive." Klug said, trying hard and failing to hide the fact that he was also quite overwhelmed by the building. "You two can stand here all day and admire the architecture if you want, but I'd rather like to get checked into my room and out of this heat."
"Oh come off it, your four eyes are all over this place." Raffina nudged Klug in the shoulder, almost sending him tumbling to the ground. "I bet you're dying to tell everyone your nerdy knowledge on what kind of columns those are, or something." She gestured vaguely to the walkway and Klug adjusted his glasses like he was about to give a grand speech.
"Well, since you asked, those are Corinthian columns. You can tell because of-"
"Hey look, there's the check in desk! Let's go check in!" Amitie grabbed Klug's sleeve and dragged him off to the check in area before he could start his lecture on the joys of column design. Raffina and Sig followed after them, with Raffina making a snide comment to Klug about the fact that even Amitie didn't want to listen to his speech. Klug didn't have a good response.
At the check in counter, Amitie pulled out her letter and slid it across the table to the receptionist like it was top secret information. The receptionist raised an eyebrow, then decided to humor Amitie and read the letter. She scanned it quickly, then reached under her desk and pulled out four keys with wooden blocks attached.
"Your rooms are numbers 24, 25, 26 and 27. Please enjoy your stay, and if you need something don't hesitate to call." She said in a voice that made it seem like she would really rather they didn't call. Sig snagged a map from the counter and the group wandered out of reception and into the main hotel grounds. At that point, they started to realise exactly how big the hotel was.
The place they'd walked out into was a path lined with puyo statues and fancy villas. The path stretched on for what seemed like miles and it had so many branches that just looking at it made your head spin. Sig held out the map and everyone else peered over his shoulders, trying to work out where on earth they were.
"So, if we're at reception," Klug pointed at a large rectangle on the map, "then our rooms would be… here. So, we should go that way!" He pointed triumphantly down one of the many branching paths.
"But why is there another reception here?" Amitie jabbed at another big rectangle on the map. "What kind of hotel has two receptions?"
"No, that's the restaurant, not another reception." Raffina sighed and rubbed her temples. "I hate to admit it, but Klug is right, we should go that way."
"Oh. Hang on." Sig paused, then turned the map upside down. "Had it the wrong way."
"SIG!" Came a collective yell from both Raffina and Klug.
"Yanno, why don't we just look at the signs?" Said Amitie, pointing at a nearby signpost. Raffina and Klug both mentally facepalmed for not thinking of that sooner.
------
They'd been walking down the path labelled 'rooms 1-100' for a while now and so far were not having any luck finding their rooms. What they had found was the spa, which Raffina was very pleased about, a fish pond, which Amitie had almost walked into, and the restaurant which everyone had taken note of. It was starting to get dark since they'd arrived quite late in the day, which meant it was even harder to see where they were supposed to be going.
There was a loud slapping noise, and everyone turned to look at Klug, who'd apparently just slapped himself in the arm.
"Uh, Klug? You good there?" Amitie asked in concern.
He scratched at his arm and grumbled under his breath. "A mosquito just bit me. Little menace…"
Sig narrowed his eyes at him. "You tried to squish it?"
"Well of course, it bit me!" It was then that Klug realised who he was talking to, and the fact that mosquitos were bugs. "Ah, I-I mean, I didn't actually squish it! It flew away, no bugs were harmed!"
Sig didn't say anything, but continued glaring daggers into Klug's back for the rest of the walk.
"Hey, have you ever wondered why vampires turn into bats and not mosquitos? Like, what's up with that?"
"Amitie, you need to go to bed." Raffina frowned, grabbing a very sleep deprived Amitie's wrist so she didn't stumble off of the path and into a bush.
"Mosquitos are nice, vampires aren't." Sig started, only to be interrupted by Klug coughing loudly. "So they don't turn into mosquitos."
"Maybe cause bats come out at night, like vampires? Mosquitos come out in the day as well as the night."
Klug groaned in annoyance. "Look, are we really going to have this conversation? There's no specific reason vampires turn into bats, or don't turn into any other creature, for that matter!"
Amitie frowned at him, but it looked like the conversation was over. Until a new idea popped into Amitie's head.
"What about leeches? They drink blood too."
Klug and Raffina both groaned.
------
In the time it had taken for the group to reach their rooms, the ever excitable Amitie had actually managed to run out of energy. Due to a combination of being too excited to sleep last night and failing so badly at finding their rooms that it was now almost evening, Amitie had fallen asleep in the middle of insisting that she wasn't tired in the slightest.
Now, she was being carried over Sig's shoulder like a sack of potatoes. He and Raffina were taking turns carrying her, and after finding out that piggybacks don't work very well when the person being carried is asleep, they opted for the potato sack option instead. That left Klug on navigation duty, and after looking at the map and figuring out the most optimal route to their rooms (looking at the signs and hoping he was going the right way) the group had finally arrived.
"Hope there's snacks." Said Sig as he gently sat Amitie down against the wall. She was still fast asleep, without a care in the world aside from whatever she was dreaming about.
Raffina huffed and took the key for room 25 from Klug. "I just hope our luggage made it here in one piece." She perked up as she opened the door to her room and saw her three suitcases piled up neatly in the corner. "Well, looks like it's time to catch up on my beauty sleep, la-ti-da!"
Klug chuckled under his breath. "Yeah, you need all the beauty sleep you can get."
Raffina scowled at him, punching her fist into her palm for added intimidation factor. Klug yelped and hid behind Sig, apparently unashamed at using him as a human shield.
Raffina blinked and took a breath, deciding that right now, arguing with Klug wasn't worth her time. "You're lucky I'm tired, else you'd be little more than a stain on the ground. I'm going to bed so I don't have to listen to your annoying voice anymore!" And with that, she turned and walked into her room, slamming the door (respectfully, so as to not disturb other guests) behind her.
Klug chuckled nervously, gesturing vaguely at his room. "I suppose I'll also be going-"
Sig cut him off. "Wait. What do we do…" He gestured to Amitie, who was slumped against the wall, snoring.
Klug hummed to himself. "Right, well, I suppose the proper thing to do would be to leave her in her room?"
Klug opened the door to room 24 and, after checking Amitie's stuff was neatly in the corner, the two boys awkwardly picked her up and placed her on the bed in a position that was hopefully more comfortable than where she'd been sleeping against the wall. Somehow, she hadn't stirred once despite the fact that Klug and Sig had definitely almost dropped her at least three times.
After checking that Amitie seemed at least somewhat comfortable, the two called it a night and disappeared into their own rooms.
Notes:
And now we've actually arrived at the hotel! Next chapter will have actual plot (if any of this can be called plot) I promise! I only have the next chapter half written, but hopefully it won't take too long to get it posted!! Have a nice day, everyone!
