Work Text:

“Sit.” Jo pointed to the chairs she’d pulled out and arranged carefully to form an equilateral triangle. Anna obeyed without question, settling into one of the chairs and folding her hands in her lap. Dean, on the other hand, crossed his arms and glared. Jo rolled her eyes and settled into the second chair, which left her with her back to her big brother. “Fine. Stand, then. Suit yourself.”

“Dean, Jo already seems somewhat upset,” Anna said calmly. “It’s probably for the best if we don’t antagonize her.”

Whether Anna was serious or just had noticed the way Dean had been looking at her and was using it to manipulate him, Jo really didn’t care. Heck, if it was the latter, that would help her make her case for what she wanted to talk to them about. Once Dean had taken his seat, Jo cleared her throat. “All right. Here’s what’s up. First off, I’ve been noticing things, and I want to talk about them.”

Anna stared down at her hands. “Jo, I…” She trailed off, and when Jo didn’t interrupt, glanced up in some surprise. “I’m sorry. You said you wanted to talk, so… you should talk.”

“Well, at some point, I do expect you and Dean to be part of the conversation. This isn’t meant to be me lecturing the two of you or not giving you a chance to get a word in edgewise.” Jo smiled at the soft look of confusion on Anna’s face. “I’ve noticed the way you two are drawn to each other. I wasn’t expecting it, but I can’t really say I’m surprised, either.”

Jo had met Anna Milton in her first-year writing class at Stanford. They’d discovered that they were in the same dorm, although not roommates, and by Christmas when Jo learned that Anna had nowhere to go after finals and would be staying in the dorm, the two were dating. “I know it’s a little soon for meeting the family, but do you want to come home with me anyway? I know they’ll love you.”

Other than the complication of there being an extra mom to introduce Anna to, meeting the parents had gone well. Sam, Anna had already met at school. Introducing Dean… well. Jo would have had to be blind not to see the look in her brother’s eyes when he first caught sight of them. The disappointment when she’d introduced Anna as her girlfriend was a lot easier to miss, but still, Jo caught it underneath his big brother joy that his little sister had found someone.

Aside from one comment about growing up with two terribly attractive brothers explaining so much about how Jo never noticed how hot she was, there hadn’t been anything overt from Anna. Jo paid attention, though, and she noticed all the little things. How if there were multiple seats available near Jo, Anna would gravitate to the one closer to Dean. Any time Dean came in or left, Anna noticed. She always laughed just a little harder at Dean’s jokes than anyone else’s. On their own, no big deal, but taken all together, it was quite obvious that Anna found Dean incredibly attractive.

Jo certainly didn’t blame her. Dean was her brother, but although it didn’t work on her, she was well aware of his charm. She knew Anna was pan. Like she’d said – it wasn’t expected, but it wasn’t a surprise, either.

“That said, I trust you both. That’s why we’re talking about this.” Jo glanced over at Dean, who was somewhat puzzled but otherwise just waiting to hear her out, as expected. She turned her focus to Anna. “You weren’t raised in the Harvelle-Winchester family. Your parents were monogamous. If that’s what you want and you want to leave it at that, I know you won’t change your mind without talking to me about it. But if you think you can handle being the pivot of a polyamorous relationship, being with both me and Dean, then I think it’s worth at least having the opening conversation about.”

Anna’s mouth fell open. When she recovered herself, she asked, “Wait, so… when you say that Mary is Mom and Ellen is Mama…”

“We mean just that,” Dean confirmed. “Medical history shit, I go to Mom or Dad and she goes to Mama, but other than that, for Jo and Sam, they literally don’t remember anything but having two moms and two dads. I remember only having one of each, but not well, and I remember how happy I was when Mom told me that Ellen and Bill were going to be Mama and Papa from now on.”

“And the two of you…”

Jo and Dean exchanged a glance. “Biologically, we’re third cousins,” Jo said. “I think. At any rate, far enough that only the most anti-incest people would give a shit if we hooked up, on the basis of biology. But we were raised together. I’m more Dean’s sister than Adam is his brother, despite him and Adam sharing a bio dad. So no, there are some lines we’re not willing to cross, no matter what you hear from idiots in the hunting community.” Dean nodded a hesitant agreement.

“All right. I’m… sure you understand that I’d like some time to think about this, figure out where my boundaries are,” Anna stammered. “Until something’s decided, Dean, I think it’s best if we continue to ignore the attraction between us other than acknowledging that yeah, it’s there, but we don’t have to act on it.”

“Fair enough,” Dean agreed. “And for the record, I’m not going to sit around waiting, and if I meet someone else who wants me all to herself, I’m not going to use you as an excuse not to go for it. So don’t feel like you’re keeping me in a holding pattern and rush yourself on my account.”
