Chapter 1: How It All Started

Chapter Text

Will tiredly got home that night, fumbling his keys into the lock. He took a long overdue sigh and ran his fingers through his short-ish brown hair before he opened the door, immediately being pulled into a hug. He looked up to the blonde haired man who had embraced him, who smiled back down at him.

"Hey babe." The man spoke.

Will smiled at his boyfriend, "Hey Nick."

Nick leaned in and gave him a kiss on the lips as the brunette closed the door with his foot. The blonde pulled away from the kiss, staring lovingly at his partner. "Do you wanna go on a date today?"

Now Will had to think about this one, his boyfriend wasn't really... out yet, and when he's in public, he gets a little...

Will smiled up at him, "Sure."

"Great, I already made the reservation, let's go!" Nick grabbed the other's hand and reopened the door, dragging him out. Will stumbled out of the house, shutting the door behind him. The brunette tripped over his feet, "Oh shit—Nicolas!" He squealed.

Nick turned around to face his boyfriend, "Sorry." He spoke as he gripped onto Will's hand and pulled him closer. Nick placed his hands on Will's sides as he kissed his lips. The blonde smiled. "Does that make you feel better?"

Will gave him a smug grin, "Almost... Maybe another one would help."

Nick chuckled softly, and pressed his lips against Will's.

Will smiled into the kiss, moving his lips with the others. The blonde flinched as he heard a neighbor close their door, quickly scrambling himself off of the other. "Shit." He whispered. Nick looked around, just to find out that there was nobody outside. Nick looked back at Will, "Let's go."

Nick sat in the driver's seat as Will walked over to the other side. Will sat beside the blonde, looking over at him in the process. "Where are we going?"

Nick smiled as he pulled out of the driveway, "Olive Garden."

Will hummed as he smiled, he loved Olive Garden.

They parked at the lot before Nick turned his head to look at the other. "I love you." Will smiled, but it slowly faltered.

Will didn't really believe it, mostly because of the way Nick acts towards him in public. Don't get him wrong, it sounded genuine, so genuine, he almost did.

Will looked at Nick, placing a smile back on his face. "Yeah. I love you too."

Nick smiled and kissed the others lips. "Let's go inside." He said as he opened the door to leave. Will did the same, closing the door then walking up to Nick. The brunette reached his hand over to grab the others, "Will!" Nick squealed, as he shook his hand off of his own.

"Right, sorry." Will apologized as he looked at his own two feet.

Nick responded with a simple eye roll, one that Will didn't notice.

"But you understand why we can't, right?" The blonde asked, trying not to let his aggravation show through his voice.

"Yeah..."

They walked in together, both of them already being in a mood; the two stepped up to the receptionist.

It was a woman, she had nice long black hair, and glasses.

"Hi, welcome," she started. "Did you guys make a reservation?"

"Uh, yeah, reservation for Nicolas Carson."

The woman eyed her list, "Yup there you guys are." She spoke pointing at, presumably his name. Then the woman looked back up at the two men in front of her, eyeing them. "And, are you guys on a date?"

Nick looked at Will, who was looking back at him, expectantly. Was he finally going to

"What, no. No, no, no, no, we are not a thing." He spoke as he looked back at the woman.

Her face lit up, Will rolled his eyes, he knew what was coming.

"Then-" she started as she leaned forward, pressing her arms together against her chest, clearly trying to show off some cleavage. The brunette's face scrunched in disgust.

"Can I have your number?" The woman asked.

"Oh? Yeah, sure—ouch!" Nick groaned as Will elbowed him. "No, nevermind." The blonde gripped at his side, he always forgot that Will was more muscular.

"Aww boo," she pouted before picking up the menus from the desk. "I'll just lead you guys to your table." She turned her back and started to walk; the couple followed.

"I told you to stop hitting me like that." Nick murmured.

"And I told you to stop getting numbers from random women." Will hissed.

Nick groaned while he rolled his eyes, "You're being dramatic—"

"So this is the table, you boys will be sat." She says interrupting their conversation. The woman places the menus on the table. "And your waiter will be here soon."

"Alright, thank you." Will speaks as the woman walks away. They sit down in their seats across from each other.

They slipped into conversation, but quickly into it Will started to get annoyed. There were two women across from them who kept taking glances at the two before giggling to themselves. Usually he would take it to flattery, but not while he was on a date...

Has he mentioned he's not attracted to women?

Eventually though, as Will expected, the women walked up to their table.

Will himself looked bored, but when he glanced at Nick, he looked almost... happy?

His eyebrows furrow.

One girl with shoulder length blonde hair looks at Will. "Heyy." She said as she dragged out her 'y', almost singing it.

"Hi." Will answered, trying his hardest not to sound impolite.

"So me and my friend, we're watching you two from afar, and we thought you two were kinda cute." She spoke looking in between them, her having the faintest British accent.

Her friend, on the other hand, stayed quiet. She rarely spoke. She had a pixie cut, curly brown hair.

Will smiled at the girl, "sorry, you guys seem sweet and all, but, I'm already seeing someone." He spoke in the nicest voice he was able to muster up.

The blonde girl frowned, but then turned to look at Nick. "What about you?"

Will looked at him, bored expression on his face as he already knew the answer.

"Uh, yeah I'll give you my number." He spoke, avoiding Will's gaze.

"I'm sorry, what's your name?" Nick asked.

The blonde girl smiled, "I'm Grace, and this is my friend, Charlotte." Grace pulled her phone out of her pocket, and opened up the keypad.

"Ok, I'm ready for the number."

"Uh, yeah, ok, it's 555-01—"

Will brought his leg up and kicked him under the table; but Nick didn't even move. It was almost as if Will hadn't touched him. Will furrowed his eyebrows as he continued to stare at his boyfriend giving these girls his number.

After a while the girls walked away.

Nick turned his head, finally locking eyes with a very angry Will Byers.

"Why the hell would you do that?" Will hissed.

"Do what?"

That response only gave him an angrier look.

Nick threw his hands up in defense, "Look, I'm not actually going to text any of them. It's all a part of the act." He saw that none of this was convincing Will, so he reached his hands forward, and placed them on top of Will's, who were resting on the table. The brunette glanced down at the hands on his before raising his eyebrows, and looking back at the other, who continued.

"Ok, when we get home, I'll make it up to you. You can do whatever you want with me." Nick spoke in a suggestive tone.

"Tempting." Will said, sarcasm laced all over his voice.

"Come on, I'm being serious." Nick smiled softly.

God damnit, Nick always knew how to get to him. Will groaned, then rolled his eyes, giving in. "Fine, but this is the last time I'm letting this slide."

Sure... like last time was the last time.

Nick grinned as he finally looked down at his menu, and Will couldn't help but smile back.

***

Will got home late that night just to find another car in their driveway. "What the fuck?" He whispers to himself as he pulls into the driveway. He got out of his car and unlocked his door, Will walked in and softly closed it. The brunette walked down the dark hallway and into his shared bedroom.

It was dark, but he thought he saw two bodies on the bed. He quickly flicked on the lights. Yup, he was right.. two bodies.

"What the fuck!" He yelled, instantly waking up the two sleeping.

Nick sat up and rubbed his eyes, "...what?" He responded, tiredly. The other person also sat up, it was a girl; she had long brown hair with bangs. She looked at Will before turning to Nick, "Babe, who is that?"

"Babe?" Will tried not to show the hurt that he felt. "Who the hell are you!?" He asked the girl.

"Uhm, I'm his girlfriend, Vanessa? Who are you?"

Will scoffed. "Girlfriend? Yeah, get the fuck out." Will spoke as he walked over to his side of the bed, the side she was in fact, sleeping on. He grabbed her arm and forced her off the bed, Will dragged her out of the room. "Ew, get your hands off me, perv!"

Will rolled his eyes, "Trust me girl, I don't want you."

Vanessa let out an offended scoff as Will continued to drag her out of the house. He opened the front door as he finally let go of the girl. "Get out." He started walking forward as the girl walked backward,

"Hey I don't even know who you are—" she said as she fully stepped outside.

"Bye." Will spoke as he slammed the door.

He turned around and unnoticeably flinched as he saw his 'boyfriend' standing a few feet behind him; he looked angry, why was he angry?

"What the fuck!" Nick cursed at the other.

"Why are you mad!? You were the one who was cheating on me!"

Nick got closer to Will, "Cheating? We were never even a thing."

"...what?" He whispered.

"I was never a little faggot like you." He pushed Will, making the brunette stumble back. "What?" Will spoke, a little louder this time; he was confused, what was going on? Nick had this serious look on his face that told Will that he wasn't joking around.

Nick took a step forward as the other took one backwards; Will was scared, was he going to hurt him? This has never happened before.

And it was like a game they were playing because as Nick continued to step forward, Will continued to step back. Will stumbled into the kitchen, and noticed a knife resting on the counter.

He quickly grabbed it and pointed it towards the other, he wasn't planning on using it, but just so Nick won't try anything. Now Nick had stopped walking. Will took a step forward, to feel the room, to make sure Nick was actually scared. Nick took a step back.

Will smiled.

He smiled as the fear transferred to the other, leaving his own body completely; filling up with the feeling he loved the most.

Power. Having leverage in the situation. He felt something stir in his lower stomach. Something you're not supposed to feel while holding someone at knife point.

They played the game again as they ended back up in the living room. "What are you doing with that Byers?"

Will wasn't going to do anything with the knife, but Nick didn't know that.

"You know what, Carson—" Will mocked him, by saying his last name. "I'm tired of you doing this, flirting with other women."

"Oh yeah? What are you gonna do? Kill me?" Nick spoke, trying to sound intimidating, but failing because he did not have the upper hand.

Will took a look at the knife in his hand, "Maybe..." Will locked eyes with the other; Nick's eyes filled with fear, fear he didn't want to show. But it was clear to Will that he was scared of him. Oh how the tables have turned.

"Why? Are you scared?" Will asked. The man scoffed. "No."

Will jerked forward, just a sudden quick motion, not actually moving from his space. The movement scared Nick, making him step back. "Will this isn't funny—"

"Do you see me laughing?" Will responded in a very serious tone, even though he really did want to laugh.

The blonde put his foot behind him, about to take another step back, but that was quickly interrupted when he stepped on the TV remote that was placed on the floor. The control slipped from under his feet, taking his foot with it. He tried to catch himself but he failed as he fell back; his head hitting against the corner of the coffee table, before bouncing onto the floor.

Will watched in shock as blood rushed out of Nick's  head and onto the floor. But he wasn't ... freaking out like he thought he should be.

He watched fascinated as the red stain grew. Watched as the man's hand rested on the small table from his attempt to catch himself; Will stared into Nick's piercing green eyes that were kept wide open.

He felt that stirring feeling again. Will saw as Nick's face stayed the same, the fear still showing.

And that's what he loved.

Fear.

He waited another moment before taking his pulse, confirming his death before pulling his phone out of his back pocket and punching in 911.
