The Perfect Dare

Summary:

After helping a friend escape the clutches of an abusive spouse, you end up at the legal office of Nelson, Murdock and Page. You don’t expect to end up entangled with a certain blind superhero or being hunted down in Hells Kitchen by your Best Friend’s husband.

None of this is canon. This is strictly for my love of Matt Murdock and his cheeks.

Notes:

I know I haven’t finished my punisher story but I wrote this one first so …

Chapter 1: The Perfect Dare

Chapter Text

You thrummed your knuckles on the door.

Murdock, Nelson, and Page

Your friend Lillian stood behind you, mute from the damage of her own visceral screams she had let out the night before.

From the corner of your eye, you looked over at Lillian. You’d let her borrow an extra coat you’d had but she still looked cold. One of your arms wrapped around her cautiously. She’d only flinched before settling into your arms.

What she needed the most is a good meal and good lawyers. Lillian heard about the firm from a friend of a friend’s, but you questioned her source because there seemed to be no one in despite it being typical business hours. Annoyance slowly crept up from the base of your feet. “Looks like nobody’s home, let’s find someone else willing to take our case.” Lillian just nodded and turned in your arm to start the trek out of the shady building.

She took her time, dragging her injured leg down the stairs. Her normally bright ginger hair was dull and the whole world seemed blanched that day.

When both of you made it onto the street to leave, you heard a few voices. A group of three were walking towards the office you’d left. A light haired man engaged a woman and another man in what looked to be the funniest conversation ever. They looked the exact opposite of the mood of your duo.

The group skidded to a stop at the doors of the office. The other man had on red tinted sunglasses and spared you a glance as you climbed in the car.

“If you plan on going to the office,  no one is in right now.” You called out through the passenger window, saying more out of spite than anything else.

“We actually went on break.” The guy with the sunglasses called right back. You stared at him and mentally admonished him for having glasses on such a rainy day.

There was a pause from everyone involved.

“And more than willing to assist you. I’ll go ahead and open shop right now.” The light haired man disrupted the awkward silence and made a gesture to come inside again. He squeezed between the others and bolted to open the doors.

Lillian looked at you with a weak smile and you both got out of the car again. This time going up she allowed you to assist her which made it faster than the first time. The woman in the group held the door open for you and ushered you into two chairs.

The group quickly gathered behind a desk and gathered a notepad.

The office itself was pretty clean but cluttered. The desks were littered with Manila folders. They seemed to be a busy firm.

“I am Nelson.” The light haired man began, “this is Murdock and Page.” He pointed the two out and you exchanged pleasantries.

You quickly introduced yourself before continuing, “And this is Lillian. She needs your help.”

The trio gone silent as Lillian opened her mouth for the first time that day. “My husband tried to kill me last night. I’d found out some information about him and was packing to leave but he jumped me-“ Her voice was shaky and coarse but she continued on, “I’d tried to get me and my son out but he tied me down..” I could see her eyes glaze and Lillian looked like she was reliving it. She grabbed your hand tightly. You squeezed back, reaching over with your other hand in a calming motion. Lillian took a shuttered breath before  looking away from the group.

“Her eight year old son called me and I came and got them out.” You’d already recounted the story to the police and an emergency protective order put in place immediately.

“Are you two okay?” Page asked in a soft voice and you knew both of you looked bad.  You had a double shiner and Lillian was bruised badly. You could see out of your left better than your right and somehow still managed to drive with the swelling. Your gift would allow you to heal faster so in a day or so your face would be clear. Silently, you wished the same could be said for your friend.

“You should see the other guy.” You joked which earned a small smile from Lillian and it lessened the tension in the air.

“So what are you asking from us?” Murdock tilted his head towards us, awaiting a response.

“I need legal counsel for divorce proceedings and any help surrounding the incident. Knowing my husband , he is trying to cut me out of everything. I own a floral shop a few blocks from here and he’s probably trying to change the locks as we speak.” Lillian gripped your hand every time she spoke  throughout the meeting.  She’d explained how powerful her husband was and the lengths he would go to get what he wanted.

The ample guards that she hadn’t paid much attention to until the night she was attacked were worrying. They’d only spared her a sad glance as she was tied down to their kitchen table and been the standing force between you and your friend when you arrived.

“So how did she get you out with a house full of bodyguards?” Nelson pointed a pen at you. Lillian grew nervous and you could feel her pulse race from your wrists being so close. She didn’t know how much to tell them.

“I’m ex-military. “ You say simply. In a way, it was the truth. “I fought us out.”

A part of your mind knew that if it had been just her husband that night that you would have silenced him permanently and got rid of the evidence. Unfortunately there were droves of men when you showed up so you didn’t have time to strangle the life out of him. Instead you’d beat your way in and out of the house-turned-compound.

Lillian knew of the power you held. You’d told her before and she pinky promised to never a soul. The day before was the first time she had seen you in motion. Your crushing blows and how agile you looked countering blows scared her at first.

You offered to go back and kill him without a second thought.

She denied.

You knew the battle was more hers than yours but she was like a sister to you and out of all the places you’d been, Hell’s Kitchen is where you’d found your chosen family.

And you’d always fought for your people.

Murdock’s fingers trailed around the room. They went from the corner of the desk to a bookshelf and they danced from furniture to furniture until he located the coffee pot.

“Coffee for you.” Murdock held out a mug of coffee for you but as soon as your fingertips brushed, the ceramic cup slid out of his grip. The loud sound caused the other’s to look over. He froze in his spot before turning on his heel patting the closest wall.

“Mr Murdock, are you feeling alright?”

“I’m fine… just blind.” Large fingers point to his face and finally, he reaches a broom. Page runs to his side and assists him. She lets out an apology and pushes Murdock away.

More than ever, you felt like a dick for mocking his sunglasses earlier.
