Second Chance

Summary:

What if there was a second chance when Maggie was shot?

Work Text:

The question was always there: What if things were different? On this day, Maggie was going to experience the reality of the biggest what-if in her life. What if she hadn't broken up with P.J.? Even more importantly, what if she hadn't died? As she lay on the floor of the rail yard bleeding out, her heart called out to P.J. Even after the pain she'd caused him, he came. His heartfelt cries for help from someone, and he proved to her that she made the wrong decision. Now, it was too late to fix things.

With the last of her strength, she tried to lift her arm to his cheek. He felt her move slightly and leaned closer to her face.

"Mags" he croaked out. "Please don't give up, don't leave me."

"I will love you from this life to the next. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it." Maggie whispered in his ear." With the last word, her arm fell to the ground, and she was gone. P.J.'s heart broke, and he collapsed beside her. That was how the others found them a short while later, but that wasn't the end of the story. Someone heard their pleas and promises and decided to step in to right a wrong that should never have happened.

--

As dawn broke the next day, the couple woke in each other's arms in Maggie's bedroom. Their confusion is plain for each other to see. Maggie slid her hand down to her stomach and realized there was no indication she had been shot. Slowly, her eyes raised, and she realized that P.J. had been following her actions with his eyes.

"P.J., how is this possible? I remember dying in your arms." Maggie said. "Are we back to yesterday or further back? Does everyone know we're engaged? We are engaged, right? I didn't stuff it all up, did I?"

"I don't know Mags, but I am taking full advantage of it. I don't even care what day it is. And we are most definitely still engaged" P.J. said as he rolled them over and proceeded to kiss Maggie with every ounce of love in his heart.

Suddenly, they hear a banging at the front door and someone stomping down the hall. Breaking their embrace apart, they realize it's Pat Doyle making his entrance. The couple gazes at each other and roll apart to rise and dress.

Maggie slowly opened the bedroom door and walked towards the kitchen to meet her father. The door to the bedroom remains cracked open, so P.J. can hear the conversation.

"Hi Dad," she said, leaning in to hug him hello "What are you doing here?"

"Well, princess, I thought about what you said yesterday, and I decided you were right," Pat responded while starting the coffee. "Get your other half, definitely not your better half, and let's try to make a plan we can all live with."

Armed with the knowledge of where they stand on the calendar, P.J. emerges from the bedroom. "Good morning Pat, how's things?"

"All things considered, they could be a hell of a lot worse," Pat responds. "Let's have our coffee and talk. I'm worried someone is going to come after Maggie P.J., and that we will lose her forever."

"I agree Pat, we gave to act quickly though. I don't think we have much time to spare." P.J. agrees. With that, the two men almost forget Maggie is there, and they start throwing ideas around about what to do.

Having sat quietly listening to the two go on for over 10 minutes while savoring both her coffee and being unexpectedly alive, Maggie clears her throat to get their attention. "Boys," she said, interrupting their conversations. "I think I know who is behind everything."

At that moment, P.J. realized that even though the shooter was long gone by the time he arrived, Maggie had seen them and knew who had killed her to protect their secret.

"This kills me to even think, let alone say, but Barry didn't act alone. I think Mick is involved as well. It's the only thing that makes sense for them to get away with everything." With those words, the tears started to roll down her cheeks as she remembers facing Mick the previous night, his confession, and shooting her to protect his secret. Maggie also remembered that she didn't call P.J. to meet her, so they must have decided to set him up for her murder. 'Well, that's not happening again,' she thinks to herself.

Pat looks like she just slapped him and recoils in his chair. While P.J. leans back, grinding his teeth and clenching his fists. 'That bastard,' he thinks 'killed his own damn sister. That is definitely not happening again.'

As they stare at each other and let their thoughts settle into place, there is another knock on the door. All 3 heads turn on a swivel, just in time to see Tom Croydon come in saying, "Look who I found hovering at the station waiting for you." as Mick Doyle comes out from behind him. Immediately, Maggie and P.J.'s eyes meet across the table. with a subtle shake of her head, Maggie convinces P.J. not to tip their hand, as a plan slowly builds in her mind.

"Hiya sis" says Mick lightly, belying the seriousness of recent events. "Can we talk a minute?"

With that comment, Pat and P.J. realized that Maggie was right about Mick's involvement, and Pat was right that someone was out to kill Maggie.

--

'I'm making changes,' Maggie thought to herself, 'starting now. I'm not giving up my future with P.J.'

"Mick, anything that you want to say to me, you can say here. I have no secrets from my father, my boss, and my fiancé. I need all of their input to make the right choices in this mess."At the word fiancé, all heads turn suddenly to P.J., 2 in disbelief, one shaking with laughter at the delivery and with Maggie smirking at him getting caught unaware.

"Fiancé" screamed Mick.

"Fiancé. Well, it's about time. Congratulations you two, come to my office, and we'll figure things out. Does anyone else know yet?" asked Tom as he mentally started planning things out."Fiancé" huffs Pat.

"P.J. did you forget something?" as he continues shaking his head.

"Sir, Maggie is the only one who has the right to give consent to our marriage. But we would like your blessing." P.J. states calmly and clearly. "Sure Boss, that'll be our first stop."

"You have my blessing, treat her right." said Pat.

'I'm impressed' think the other men in the room.

'Damn that man.' thinks Maggie.

--

"Maggie, I really do need to speak with you alone," Mick states.

"NO. I told you, no more secrets." Maggie responds.

"Fine. I think you marrying this idiot is a mistake. Your life is in danger, and I need you to go into WPP alone immediately." There, that should get the point across Mick thinks, still under the assumption his involvement is unknown.

Everyone responds to his statement in utter disbelief.

"How dare you!" fumes Maggie. "This man would give up his life for me, and you want me to break his heart and leave him? When did you become so cruel? We're a family in Mount Thomas. Everyone would have our backs here. Strangers stand out. Instead, you want to take me away and leave me alone and vulnerable. Why Mick?"

'Damn, she was supposed to agree. Now, what do I do? 'thinks Mick.

"Mags isn't going anywhere alone. I agree she's at risk, but here's my suggestion. Tom, Maggie, and I arrange for an immediate, quiet wedding - I'm thinking today or tomorrow. Sorry Mags, I know we haven't talked about the size of the wedding yet, but I'm not letting you slip through my fingers. I'm thinking the station crew, Chris, and us here for now. When the threat is gone, we can have a big church wedding. Does that work for you Mags?" P.J. suggests. "Then we can go on our honeymoon and if necessary have an accident while away and join WPP if it's necessary. I have a friend in the AFP that could arrange it quietly. Then if there are any other coppers involved they won't know any details. That should keep us safe."

Maggie goes to respond when she notices P.J. isn't done.

"We could find a way to communicate with Pat that we're OK. As long as Pat's not panicking, Tom, you'd know we're OK. Pat, since you're not working, you could move here and keep Mags' place up for us. I can't imagine it will take long for all the snakes and worms to be identified and captured."

At the final comment, Mick begins to sweat. 'No, they can't know. My involvement is buried deep. Barry was the visible part.'

"I doubt the Victoria Police will agree to let the Feds protect one of their own, I think my option is better. There isn't time for a wedding, just let her go. I'll make sure Maggie comes back to you safely. I won't put her in the system, so no one but me will know where I've stashed her."

Maggie and P.J.'s eyes meet and they both rise from the table.

"Give us a couple of minutes please," Maggie said as they left the room.

As they enter the bedroom and shut the door, P.J. spins Maggie around and pulls her into his broad chest. "Mags, you're not doing it alone. Do not tell me you're thinking about his suggestion.

"Burrowing in, Maggie sighs. Lifting her tear-covered face, she shakes her head. "I tried that before and it killed me, literally. We're in this together. I love you, Patrick John Hashem. Every day of our future, however long it is going to be, will be spent together."

They both lean forward, bringing their lips together in a vow-affirming kiss.

"I love you too Doyley, and I agree completely. So what do we do."

They continue to stand in their embrace talking the options through when suddenly Maggie gasps at the realization of a forgotten item.

"P.J., I never told you everything Barry told me and what it led me to. He had a diskette containing proof of everyone involved in the scheme. He arranged for a copy to be provided to the Federal prosecutor if anything happens to him. But he also told me where he had another copy. I picked it up on the way from the jail. Call your friend in the AFP, get him here with support. Tell him we have documentation proving mass corruption in the Victoria Police, including IID. Let him know our lives have already been threatened by my brother who's also involved, and the threat to my life is imminent. Please make the call now before I change my mind."

With that, Maggie withdraws from their embrace and leans on the wall looking out the window.P.J. opens and closes his mouth several times, trying to wrap his mind around her disclosure.

"Mags, why didn't you tell me? That's why you broke off the engagement before, you were going with Mick's suggestion to go to WPP weren't you? But you didn't know he was involved. You found that out when he shot you. It was him, wasn't it? I'll kill the bastard."

Maggie turns suddenly and moves to grab his hands. Making eye contact, she states firmly. "No, you will not get revenge for something that will never happen. I will not lose you this time. Make the call. We won't leave this room until we have a plan we agree on and a time frame in place."

With that, she leans in and kisses him sweetly on the lips. "Make the call."

P.J. stands there in awe of Maggie's strength. "I love you Mags. Oh, just so you know, I think Senior Detective Hashem and Senior Constable Hashem will sound pretty good though. At least until you get promoted. I'll make that call now." With that comment, P.J. walks over to the nightstand and grabs his mobile phone, dialing a number from memory.

"Jimmy, P.J. here," he throws out quickly when the call connects. "I need your help urgently. Only people you trust 1000%. My life and that of my fiancée are at imminent risk from a bunch of corrupt cops. And by imminent, I mean they may try to kill her or us tonight. I need you man, I'm collecting."

There's silence on the line for so long P.J. thinks the call dropped. Then he hears shuffling as Jimmy changes to a secure location. What they don't know is as Jimmy moves, he points to his most trusted men and motions them into the observation room. When the door shuts, he stops any questions with a shake of his head.

"Ok P.J., I am putting you on speakerphone. I have 3 people in the Observation room with me. You have met them all - Mark Gantry, John Jones, and Del Comphrey. I need you to repeat what you said and I need to know if you have proof. Nothing will be written into the computer at this point."

The 3 newcomers look at each other, they all know and trust P.J., and all 3 realize this is serious.

--

Moving towards the corner of the bedroom furthest from the door P.J. pulls Maggie in close to his side.

"Jimmy, I need your help urgently. Only people you trust 1000%. My life and that of my fiancée are at imminent risk from a bunch of corrupt cops. And by imminent, I mean they may try to kill her or us tonight. I need you man, I'm collecting" P.J. reiterates.

The 4 men in the other room started trading looks. They had heard whispers of corruption, but no one had been willing to go on record, and they hadn't found proof.

"P.J., first off congratulations mate. I look forward to meeting the lady that tamed you. Second, I need you to answer yes or no only. Do you understand?"

"Yes"

"Are you alone?"

"No"

"Is it your fiancée in the room with you only?"

"Yes"

"Can anyone else overhear us?"

P.J. is silent for a second as he ponders that one. The 4 men hear him ask "Mags, do you think the others can hear us through the bedroom door or are we safe to talk quietly?"

Maggie thinks and responds, "My voice is softer and doesn't carry as far, if I talk we should be OK. Do you trust all of them?"

"With my life, and mom knows and loves Jimmy like her own," P.J. replies.

'Holy shit, she's met Helena' Jimmy thinks. 'I need to call her for details on this mystery woman.'

"Ok, hand me the phone P.J., but don't let go. This is breaking my heart." Maggie responds. Taking both the phone and a deep breath Maggie starts talking.

"Jimmy, my name is Senior Constable Maggie Doyle. I have in my possession a diskette containing proof of all the Victoria Police officers who are involved in this mess. The proof on the disk was gathered by Detective Barry Craig, and before his arrest, he arranged for a copy of this to be sent to the Federal Crown Prosecutor if anything happened to him. Yesterday Barry reached out through his lawyer and asked me to visit him in St. David's. He asked his lawyer to leave and then quietly told me about the proof. He also told me to be overly cautious, he had an additional copy made because he didn't trust his lawyer. Barry told me where he hid the extra copy and asked me to retrieve it. He asked me to get it to someone that could act rapidly." Maggie paused and lifted her eyes to P.J., gathering strength to get through the worst of the story.

"Maggie, is there more? Did you retrieve it?" Jimmy asks.

"On the way back from the jail I stopped and retrieved the diskette. But there's something you need to know, Barry also warned me that the cops involved would know I went to see him because of his lawyer. They knew I had been digging to find out what cops were involved in murdering my brother Robbie after getting him hooked on heroin. He said they would be coming for me, soon. He finished by saying they would send the person that I least expected. My only surviving sibling. My brother Mick, who was on loan to the drug squad from IID. Mick, who showed up here just before we called to try and convince me to break my engagement with P.J. and run to WPP with him." With those final words, Maggie breaks down sobbing into P.J.'s chest.

Jimmy, Mark, John, and Del are blown away by this information. While listening to the woman sobbing, they mute Jimmy's phone and start planning. Several minutes later, they hear knocking coming over the phone.

"Maggie, P.J. are you close to a decision? I think we need to get out of this house before troubles shows up." Mick says, silently laughing at his own joke.

"It's not an easy decision Mick, we'll take the time we need to," replies Maggie.

As they listen to the feet moving down the hall, P.J. brings the phone up to his ear.

"Well mate. Any comments, questions, or useful thoughts?" P.J. throws out.

Astounded at what Mick had said Jimmy takes the phone off mute, "We've been brainstorming while you got yourselves together. Pack a small overnight bag for each of you, a small bag with only 2 or 3 days' worth of clothing. Nothing personal or identifiable. We're heading for the helipad and will be to you in less than 3 hours. Is there a place you can get to unseen or where no one would be surprised to see you?"

In the background, they hear several doors slam and the helicopter powering up.

"I think we should go to the station with Tom, our Boss, he wants to talk about our engagement and we should be safe in his office with him. They wouldn't attack there, right? Maggie suggests.

"I agree, we ride with Tom. We tell Mick we want to have things appear normal. We each carry a backpack like we normally would. That won't raise any red flags. With nothing missing from either house, they shouldn't question it. We tell Mick that we will go into WPP together, and we will wait in Tom's office until the WPP team arrives to support him. That will either set him off immediately or give him time to plan something else." P.J. throws back.

"Ok, we're taking off now. Just the four of us are coming for now. Once the 2 of you and the proof are secured, we'll bring in more resources. Your lives take precedence at this point. We'll call you on this number when we're 15 minutes out. At that time, head to the Pub with Tom. Tell him everything, except Mick's involvement. For his own sake. Good luck mate, we'll see you soon." with that Jimmy hangs up and looks to the others in the helicopter. "I hope we make it in time."

Maggie and P.J.'s eyes meet again and they have a silent conversation. With a nod, they grab 2 backpacks and throw the basics in. When they're ready, they grab the other persons hand and open the door to meet their fate.

"We've made our decision. We will ride with Tom to the station. We wait in the office with him until you can get the WPP team here. I'm not leaving without P.J." states Maggie definitively. "We're in this together, so make the appropriate plans for 2. Dad, stay here, Mick will keep you informed I'm sure."

With that, P.J. catches Tom's eye and they head out the door to Tom's car.

--

In the car, Maggie fills Tom in on the conversation with Jimmy and the plans they already have in place. With a glance at P.J., she ends the story by telling Tom not to trust Mick, to only trust the 4 men that P.J. has reached out to.

P.J. isn't surprised by anything Maggie told Tom, including her warning about Mick. He knew she'd warn Tom if she found a way. He looks out the front window while they sit quietly and let Tom absorb the news."

Ok. We can work with that. No one will be at the station yet, we'll go in through the back door and right into P.J.'s office. We will know our next steps as soon as your mare contacts us. I'm going to miss having you both around. Is there anything else I can do while we wait?" asks Tom."

Actually, there is!" pipes up Maggie from the back seat.

As they arrive at the station, they see Chris waiting by the back door with Tom's priest standing beside her. They open the car doors and enter the station silently. All 5 stop suddenly when they see Ben sitting at his desk early already getting caught up on paperwork.

"Ben, you're in really early, What's wrong? " asks Tom.

While he turns and starts to answer, the rest of the group proceeds into the small office on their right. Ben is startled by the group but doesn't say anything when Tom holds his hand up. With a tilt of his head, Tom has Ben join the others. The office door is then firmly shut with Tom leaning back, arms crossed over his chest, holding the outside world to the other side of the door.

"Father, we're on a tight schedule. These two have to leave in less than 3 hours, and these 3 witnesses will see them married before they leave. The marriage license will be handled later, as will a proper church wedding, but for now, please, marry them" pleads Tom.

Chris and Ben are shocked by all this, then realize they are there as witnesses to ensure the wedding is legally binding. All 4 heads turn and take in the engaged couple. They are curled into each other and tucked in a corner, hidden for easy access and protected by file cabinets. Neither appears to be aware of the others in the room.

"Married, when did they get engaged? What's going on Tom?" snaps Ben. This isn't supposed to happen. They were drifting apart, his chance was coming.

An uncharacteristically quiet voice drifts from the corner. "P.J. proposed last night, we hadn't had a chance to appreciate it ourselves before the need to flee was made necessary. We just want to get married with our friends, or those that can be here, before we leave. Chris, please stand beside me?" Maggie pleads.

"Maggie, I'm honored you want me to be here. I will gladly witness something that's long overdue" replies Chris.

"Tom, I'd like you to stand beside me" says P.J.

"Gladly. Ben please guard the door. No one enters. NO ONE" replies Tom.

Ben moves into position while grumbling under his breath. As Tom trades places, he quietly addresses Ben. "I know you have feelings for her, but it was never going to happen. This marriage has been in the works for almost 7 years, since the first time he called her Mags and she blushed. Be happy for them, the next months, hell maybe years, will be a challenge and they desperately need each other to survive it."

Ben is shocked by that comment and the weight behind it. He silently nods his understanding to Tom and takes his place at the door with a very different mindset.

"Whenever you're ready Father."

With that subtle urging, everyone is moved into position and the hurried wedding proceeds.

--

Back at Maggie's house, an ongoing discussion is taking place. Pat as on the force for a long time and he's never heard of someone being put in WPP in this method. He's spent the entire conversation trying to get something useful out of Mick. He hasn't succeeded yet, but he's not out of tricks yet. He'll find out what he needs to know.

"Mick, what is really going on? I'm scared for you sister. I'm even scared for P.J. None of this makes sense" Pat throws his next volley.

Mick sighs, realizing he has to tell his father something or this can go on all day, and he needs to get to a phone and arrange appropriate support. "Dad, this is completely confidential. Maggie had a conversation with Barry and IID believes he gave her information about other corrupt cops. We haven't had a chance to get her alone and debrief her because P.J. won't leave her side. To be honest, the way he's acting I think he's involved somehow, but I can't prove that without talking to Maggie. Can you help me separate her from him so I can talk to her?"

'There you go Dad, take that. You want to pump me for information, I'll use you to get what I want.'

"P.J. involved, are you crazy? He's straighter than a 2x4 and he loves your sister something fierce. He's her strongest protector and support. Instead of trying to separate them, you should use him to keep her safe." Pat states confidently. 'You're pushing too hard boy. Where did I go wrong that you ended up on the take? Damn, I'd hoped your sister was wrong about you. I hope they get away from you.'

Mick sighs again, trying to come up with a new way to get to Maggie.

--

As the helicopter banks to land outside Mount Thomas, Jimmy sees a large ute sitting waiting for them, with a tall blond leaning against the side. 'Who the hell is that?'

Jimmy is the only one to exit upon landing, slowly making his way to the ute."Are you Jimmy? P.J. asked me to meet you and bring you to the station. My name's Ben, I'm the Sargeant out of Mount Thomas and I work with the newly married couple. I had to get out of the station, their happiness was making me sick" complains Ben.

"Married? They were barely engaged 2.5 hours ago!" replies Jimmy as he turns to wave the others off the helicopter.

"Yeah mate, they wanted to be married before leaving and have their 2 closest friends stand up with them. It was a small thing with only 6 of us there including the priest and yours truly, the cop manning the door. They got their wish. Tom said he'd take care of the paperwork while they're gone. You will bring home to us safely, right? They're an important part of the station" Ben relays.

Jimmy does his best impression of a smile under the circumstances "We will do our best. I've been friends with P.J. for over 30 years. We go back to year 5, and have had each other's backs since then. Good times and the worst. That's why he called me and my team. He knows we're the best, and that for selfish reasons I won't risk either his or Maggie's lives. He promised me first godfather, and I'm holding him to it."

Ben grins, "that makes me feel better about this mess. Thank you."

With that, the 5 men squeeze into the ute and make the 15-20 minute drive to the station.

--

"I'll see you when you return for a proper wedding with a reception at The Imperial. Thank you for including me. I'll miss you both." weeps Chris.

She reaches out and hugs them both tightly to her. Without waiting for a response she follows the priest out the side door. No one the wiser that they were there.

Tom comes back in the room and closes the door. "Pat just called, Mick just left your house and he doesn't know where he was heading."

As he finishes his statement, P.J.'s mobile phone starts ringing. ""Ya."

Laughing at his friends' response "Thanks for the lift, we're 15 minutes out according to the limo driver you sent. Everything still good there?"

"No, subject one just left Maggie's place, destination unknown. If he's heading this way, head's 10 minutes out from our current location." P.J. replies. "We need a fast suggestion. I do not want him seeing us with you."

Listening in, Maggie pipes up, "What if we take Tom's car to his place? It's on Ben's way, that will reduce the meet-up time and get us out of here before subject one arrives."

Before anyone can reply they hear noises in the office area. "Dammit" comes from 3 voices at once. P.J. and Maggie move back to the sheltered corner and each other's embrace. Tom waits for them to move, and he slowly opens the door, slipping out of the room.

"Jack" he exclaims loudly, knowing the couple will have heard him and relaxed slightly. "what are you doing here this early? You still have half an hour before your shift starts."

"Sorry Boss, didn't finish my paperwork yesterday so I came in before Maggie yells at me again" Jack replies sheepishly.

Tom shakes his head, "come into my office for a minute. I need to talk to you, I just forgot something on P.J.'s desk. Let me grab it and a coffee. You go ahead, I'll just be a minute."

"Sure thing Boss" with that, Jack turns and head's into Tom's office.

Tom turns to P.J. and Maggie and tosses them his keys. "Be safe you two. Come home safely. We have a wedding reception to arrange. Now go well you can."

Once again tearing up, Maggie separates from P.J. and grabs Tom in a tight hug kissing his cheek. "Thanks Boss. We'll miss you. Let's go hubby."

P.J. smiles contentedly then grabs Tom in thanks, "I don't have the words Tom. We'll be back when it's safe. You can work on your plan to have us keep working together. That is a must, for both of us."

"We'll talk. Now go!"

P.J. exits the station and they pull onto the road. Just as they make a left and turn the corner, they see Mick's car pulling up to the front of the station. While P.J. watches for a tail, Maggie takes the most direct route to Tom's house.

Confirming they aren't being followed, he pulls out his mobile phone "Hey, we're safely away from the station and driving to the Boss's house. We'll be there in 5 and should arrive at the same time as your car. Ben can take the Boss's car back and we take the ute wherever we're going."

"Sounds like a plan mate. See you in 5". Jimmy confirms. "Ben, they're meeting us at your Boss's place. We'll keep the ute for now and you'll head back to the station with Tom's car. Thank you for your help. We'll keep them safe."

Ben nods, but is thinking about Maggie and missed chances. Then he sees the Boss's car pulling up to the house, but leaving the driveway empty. He pulls in front of them, throwing the truck into park. The 7 people exit the 2 cars moving quickly.

"Bye Ben, thank you! " Maggie throws out with a quick hug, then not waiting for a reply she runs to the shelter of the dark windowed truck.

P.J. grabs his hand in thanks "I'll keep her safe, I love her with everything I have Ben. I'll make her happy."

Ben shakes his head "I know that Peej, that's all we ask. Be safe. Bye.

"With that he trots to the running car, climbs in, and drives off with a small wave.

Jimmy grabs P.J. in a tight hug. "Congratulations man, she's a beaut. You are punching above your weight class man. Let's get on the road, we can catch up on route."

P.J. smiles, "I definitely agree with you, but she's mine now legally, and I have no intention of letting her go." With that statement made, the 5 men squeeze into the truck with Maggie.

"I hope we aren't going far, I'm smaller than all of you, and I have no room to move. I can't imagine how you all feel. What's the plan? " Maggie asks.

While we were flying over, my contact confirmed an empty property owned by WPP about 30 kms from St. David's. We'll stop there to plan the next steps and grab lunch. I don't know if we will stay overnight or move on. I want you out of Victoria as soon as possible" Jimmy states.

They drive mostly in silence after the introductions are completed. Maggie holds tightly onto P.J., both in grounding herself away from freaking out and for confirmation that he's still with her. P.J. was having similar thoughts as he rubs his finger over her engagement ring. 'I have to get her wedding ring asap. Better find one for myself too' he thinks.

As they pull-up to the residence, Jimmy's phone rings. "Smith speaking"

"It's Ben. 7 cars just peeled out of town. Saw them on the way from the Boss's place. Looked to know where they're heading. Check their stuff, I think they are tracking you" with that he hangs up and saunters into the station.

--

"Hey Boss, here's your keys. Tanks full, here's your change. I don't know what's wrong with my car, but I couldn't wait for the groceries any longer. I used the last of my coffee this morning, I was going to borrow from the station for tomorrow." Ben throws the keys to Tom and then notices the other persons in the office. "I apologize for interrupting, I wasn’t expecting anyone this early.

"Inspector Ted Faulkner stands and faces Ben reaching out to shake his hand. "Good morning Sargeant, I'm glad you're here. Have you seen Doyle or Hashem today?"

"No sir, I haven't. I thought they were both off of rotation today?" Ben replied knowing the schedule would support his statement.

"Really, can you please bring in the schedule?"

"Yes sir, right away." Ben spins around to grab the schedule.

On turning he notices someone trying to sneak out off P.J.'s office. "Sr. Sargeant, please come out here."

Tom stands and rushes out to where Ben is standing.

"Boss, watch the door to P.J,.'s office."

As they stand there, the door to the other office opens and Mick Doyle comes out.

"Can I help you Doyle?" calls out Tom, knowing Faulkner can hear him. He hears the chair shift as Inspector Faulkner comes out of Tom's office.

Mick freezes realizing he's been caught. "I was looking for Maggie and figured she'd be with P.J., have you seen them?"

"No, neither one is on the schedule to work today. Did you check both of their houses?"

Knowing he can't push any harder without giving himself away, Mick replies "I checked Maggie's place, I guess I'll try P.J.'s place now."

With that, he spins and tries to get out of the station as quickly as possible. 'Dammit, they snuck away. Where could they have gotten to?'

Once in his car, he grabs the hidden mobile phone "They snuck out of the station before I got here, they're in the wind. Everyone else is accounted for."

"Meet us at the fork between Mount Thomas and St. David's, we'll regroup" responds the faceless voice.

--

Jack Lawson was assigned traffic duty on the road between Mount Thomas and St. David's, and he was expecting a quiet few hours on the rarely used shortcut (that was actually 5 kms longer), when he saw 7 cars in a group flying towards him. Assuming he won't be able to stop them, he starts his car and aims the radar gun toward the group. As they approach, the numbers keep increasing.

"Mount Thomas 308 to Mount Thomas Station"

"Mount Thomas station, go ahead 308"

"Sir, I have 7 cars coming up the sideroad. The radar has clocked the group at 30 kms over the limit. Please advise."

"Jack, do they look to be street racing or just in a hurry."

"Sir, they're rushing somewhere. I can see an eighth car in the distance catching up to the front group."

"308, try turning on your lights. Maybe they'll slow down. I do not want you chasing 8 cars on your own"

"Roger Mount Thomas station, trying that now...Sir, the first 7 cars did not react, the last car is slowing down, rego is all muddy I can't read it... Sir, driver is exiting the vehicle. His hand is on his hip and he appears armed...Sir, it's Mick Doyle...Detective, are you with that group that sped by? The radar clocked them at 40 kms over the limit when they went by and none of slowed down at the lights...Detective, why is your gun out? What's going on? Why are you apologizing?...

"BANG"

"Jack, Jack...Mount Thomas station to VKC"

"VKC, go ahead Mount Thomas station."

"I have an officer unresponsive after the sound of a gunshot over the radio. 10 kms outside Mount Thomas on Widgeree Road, near marker 79."

"VKC, attention all available units, we have an officer unresponsive after the sound of a gunshot. All available units to marker 79 on Widgeree Road."

Mick realizes that the mic button was pressed, 'I hope it wasn't down the whole time, I gotta catch up to the rest.' At that, he turns and leaves Jack laying in his car.

Back at Mount Thomas station, the men are shocked by what they heard. Inspector Faulkner is the first to recover after Tom calls for help. "Did that Constable just clearly identify his assailant as IID Detective Mick Doyle?"

Tom responds with a shaky voice "Yes sir, he did."

The 3 men head out to the scene, praying Jack is alright.

--

Before entering the house, the group starts searching. After searching their bags, Jimmy's team finds a tracker in the bottom of Maggie's purse, and a second one sewn into P.J.'s leather jacket. "Shit"

The trackers are thrown towards the empty house aiming for an open window, and the group of 6 peals out the back of the property. Not 5 minutes later, 8 cars turn down the front drive, sliding to a stop. "Search everywhere, the trackers are still here, find them."

As the men searching open the front door to the house, a massive explosion is triggered. The officers that have reached Jack and gotten him safely into the ambulance hear and see the explosion. Leaving the first officers on scene, the other officers head toward the explosion. The first car turning down the driveway is Ben's car, with Tom and Faulkner as his passengers.

In front of them is a ruined house, with 8 cars spread around the drive. There are bodies on the ground, and a few men staggering toward their cars. Tom recognizes the man closest to him as a Detective that has been in Mount Thomas on several occasions, and behind him, about to collapse, is Mick Doyle.

Without realizing these are all Melbourne cops, Faulkner takes on the role of Incident Commander and starts directing people to check the wounded and dead.

"Sir" Tom pulls him aside, "there's something I need to inform you of before any of the injured people are taken to hospital. It's the reason Doyle and Hashem aren't calling in, and why I called you."

"What's going on Tom?"

With that, Tom explains everything including calling for WPP off the books. As the 2 honest cops stand looking at the mess in front of them.

"This is going to be bad. A black eye for the whole force. Dammit Tom, why didn't you tell me about this? We could have been prepared."

"Sir, I found out at 6 this morning. We got my people out safely, or thought we did, and I called you. My concern is how this group found them so quickly. Do you have a mobile phone on you?"

"Yes, here you go. Who are you calling?" queried Faulkner.

"Oi, Ben, come here. What have you found? I assume they were looking for our friends?" Tom asked, already knowing the answer.

Ben trots over. "Sirs, preliminary looks show 12 dead, I recognize a few - all Melbourne Drug Squad and CI detectives. We also have 7 injured at some level" pausing to glance at Faulkner, Ben takes a breath and says the hard part, "Sir, Mick Doyle is one of the wounded, but I expect he will survive. My former Sergeant is among the dead. No sign of the Hashem's and their friends, but I did find a tracking device next to Mick. It could be how they found them so quickly. I don't see the ute they were driving. So I suspect they located the devices and left them here."

"We will know in a minute. Stay here and watch for prying eyes and ears," Tom stares as he calls a number her recently memorized. "Please pick up" he pleads, not even realizing he's almost chanting it.

"Ya, who's there?" comes a heavy Lebanese-accented male voice.

Tom sighs, "P.J., it's Tom. Are you all ok? We are at a house with 8 cars of dead and wounded Melbourne cops. We found a tracking device on the ground."

"Hold on Tom, we're pulling over and I'm putting you on speakerphone." As the words are said, the driver follows through. At the same time, Tom, Ben, and their boss move and do the same in Ben's car.

"Ok Boss, on our way to our first stop Ben warned Jimmy he'd seen a group of cars heading out of town in a hurry and to check for a tracker. We got to the house and started searching. We found 2 devices, one in my jacket hem and the other in Maggie's purse. We threw them towards the house and an open window and took off." P.J. summarized, leaving out a possible concern of a leak from inside the WPP team. He receives a silent nod of thanks from his long-time friend.

Tom and the others are dismayed by this information. "Ok, looks like the group tracking you is out of the picture, for now at least. Get where you're going and be safe."

Before the calls can disconnect, Maggie can be heard quietly asking, "Boss, was Mick with them? Is he alive?"

'Dammit Maggie, I don't want to confirm your worst thoughts.' Tom's brief hesitation confirms Mick's presence at least.

"Is he alive then?" Maggie pushes.

"Yes he is, minor injuries only. I'm sorry Doyle. I wanted you to be wrong" Tom confirms, at least able to give some comfort her brother's not dead.

Hearing her start to cry, 7 of the men are at a complete loss as to what to say or do, when they hear a voice, "Mags, sweetheart, as much as I'd want to avoid a trial for your and Pat's sakes, it's better this way. We can bring the whole thing down with your proof. We will be safe to go home and be with our family."

Various versions of 'Good job mate' go through the other men's minds.

"You're right P.J., but this will kill dad...Ok, let's get this over with. We'll be in touch Sir. Thank you for your honesty. At least I know another person I can still trust." With that statement, the call disconnects.

With a throat-clearing cough to hide his dismay, Faulkner states "alright men, we don't know who outside of Mount Thomas we can trust, so we count on each other. I'll remain on site as IC. Tom, go back to the station and call Canberra, we need the AFP here immediately, no locals and no Melbourne. Ben, you accompany the dead and wounded to the hospital in Mount Thomas. All are to be searched and cuffed to their beds, regardless of their injury level. No one sees them except doctors and nurses you trust. Are we clear? Then let's deal with this mess. Generic messages over VKC only."

As they go to exit the car, Faulkner stops suddenly "Hold on, did you say the Hashem's with your first report Ben? Did P.J. call Maggie sweetheart? Tom, did you know they were together?"

"Sir, before this morning I was aware they were dating. It stayed out of the station, so I had no concerns. Their closure rate as a team is unmatched. As for them being married, I'm proud to say, I stood up for them this morning before they left. I don't see it changing anything when they come home." At that, Tom opens the door to move into the driver's seat. The other men follow suit because there's nothing they can add.

--

As P.J. pulls her close, Maggie slowly starts to get herself under control. She raises her eyes to her husband, expressing how grateful she is with just a look. She drops her head and burrows deeper into P.J.'s chest.

"Ok Jimmy, I really need some good news. Where do we go now? Who can we trust?" With those words, the men's hearts all break a little more. Maggie sounded so distraught.

Jimmy thinks for a minute, "I think we keep off the grid, we keep to the 6 of us. I have a place we can go. My mom's mom died 6 months back, we haven't finished with her Estate yet, but I will be inheriting her house. it's just outside Melbourne. We can be there in less than an hour. Me being in the area won't raise any red flags. I can drop you off. Then Mark and I will run to the store and stock up."

Everyone sits back in the car, thinking about the different options available to them, and realizing there were no other options. "Sounds good, my grams is not far off. Drop me there and I'll grab her spare car, that will give us additional options," Mark adds. "By the way, there is something we need to talk about. The 4 of us flew out of the office earlier with no warning, and none of us have checked in. I think we reach out to the Boss. We all know he's beyond reproach."

John adds his two cents worth, "Boss is definitely clean. I'll call now." He reaches into his pocket to pull out the phone, pressing speed dial 4, he waits for it to connect.

"Johnson speaking" is heard when the call is picked up.

"Jones here sir, I need to bring you up to speed on something. My whole team is with me, along with 2 unregistered protectees. We're concerned about leaks. We took them to the house outside Mount Thomas where we met them. Jimmy called in a request for somewhere free in that neighborhood, by the time we arrived the place was rigged to blow up. There are currently 12 dead dirty cops from Melbourne that were on the tail of our charges. We have with us proof of widespread corruption in the Victoria Police, especially the Drug, CI and IID divisions. The protected witnesses are 2 cops out of Mount Thomas. Sir, this is huge. We don't know who to trust. Our plan is to go off grid. We also know that a copy of the proof is set to be delivered to the Federal Crown Prosecutor, but we don't know when."

"Detective, I will take care of your team's absence. You 4 call no one but me. Give the witnesses my number as well, just in case. You will check in daily. 8-hour rotating check ins, based off this time. Keep them and the proof safe. I will prepare the documents, but nothing in the system until urgently needed. What are their names."

Looks are exchanged in the car, and 6 nods given. "Sr. Detective Patrick John Hashem and Sr. Constable Maggie Doyle-Hashem, Sir."

It's the first time they've heard that name. It makes them both smile, then Maggie's look changes. " Sir, it's just Maggie Hashem."

P.J. couldn't be prouder in that moment. The smile lights up his face. "Wait until my mom hears that one. She's going to smile bigger than I am. Then follow that up with a request for grandkids before she dies."

"We can talk about that later, dear" Maggie smirks back to him.

The others in the car, shake their heads and chuckle quietly.

--

Ben arrives at the hospital immediately following the ambulance. He goes right over to the Doctor. "Doc, everyone one of these 7 men is a dirty cop, they're aiming to kill Maggie and P.J. There are to be no visitors and they are to be handcuffed to the rail at all times. Is there somewhere they can be isolated but kept together? It will make access restrictions easier."

"Yeah, we can do that. Are Maggie and P.J. ok? I don't see them anywhere."

Ben smiles, despite the topic of conversation. "They're great actually. They're together, safe and in love."

"Good to hear, let me deal with these guys" and with that they move to take care of the wounded.

--

Tom is finally back at the station, curtains down and door locked. Sitting back in his seat, he sighs before picking up his phone and dialing his old friend.

"Johnson speaking"

"Henry, it's Tom Croydon calling. I need your help. I have 2 of my best in trouble and a dozen dead dirty cops at our hospital. We need the Feds on this and Melbourne kept out as long as possible."

"Tom, I was hoping to hear from you. I've been in contact with the team the Hashem's are with. They are beyond reproach and will keep them safe. You have to fill me in on all the details on this mess. I'm coming down myself with my second best team. The best is with your officers. The helicopter is waiting for me, I'll be there soon. I'll come right to the station, so stay put."

"Thanks Henry, that's very comforting. I know P.J. called someone he trusted, I'm glad you trust them as well."

"Damn, I didn't make the connection. Hashem is Jimmy's best friend, no wonder that team flew out without hesitation. I'll be there as soon as possible. I hate to say it, but trust no one you wouldn't personally vouch for."

"That goes without saying Henry, but I think Jimmy's been bumped down a notch. I'll be waiting. Bye." As Tom hangs up, there's a knock in his door. He gets up to go answer it. As hard as it is, he has a station to run and a town to protect.

--

Just outside Melbourne, the ute pulls up to the nondescript house. Everyone breathes more easily as they exit the car and enter the house.

"Ok, we have 6 bedrooms, so that is not an issue. P.J. why don't you two take the master. It's got an en suite and this is your honeymoon. It's the best we can do for now. We'll work out the rest of the arrangements and figure out how to get more clothes and things. Mark and I are leaving to get the groceries and second car. We'll be back soon." with that the 2 men leave.

P.J. and Maggie grab their bags and head off through the house. They find the correct room and close the door behind them. Both bags drop to the ground as they turn to each other. Knowing they are as alone as they are going to be for some time, they have decided to consummate their marriage immediately. "P.J., I don't want to wait for little Patrick or Margaret...do you mind?"

"Are you kidding me, I couldn't be happier with that idea. You're going to be a wonderful mother. I love you Mags. "

"You will be an amazing father you know, I couldn't have picked a better man. I love you too."

There are not a lot of clear words for some time after that. Eventually, the couple starts talking softly about their future plans.

Guessing what may be happening upstairs, John and Del decide to take a walk around the yard until Mark and Jimmy return.

--

Three hours later, the security team is back together and putting the groceries away. "Do we want to know where the newlyweds are?" Mark asks, tongue in cheek.

"We haven't seen or heard from them since you left. We high-tailed it outside as soon as you left. We kept an eye on the doors, but stayed out of hearing distance. It's their wedding night, we were not needing to hear them." John throws back.

All 4 start laughing at being locked in a house with newlyweds, a couple that have no secret about how they feel about each other. As they calm down, Jimmy gets a serious look on his face. "I've known P.J. for over 30 years. I've never seen him like this. She's good for him. We keep them both safe at all costs." The others nod in agreement and they get back to work.

As they finish, the group flips several coins to decide who will cook first. Having done this routine before, all 4 are capable chefs. Losing round one, Del starts on dinner while the others scatter. Hearing a set of steps on the stairs, Del looks up and sees P.J. entering the room alone. "Where's the missus?"

"She's asleep. The part her brother has played in this is killing her. Add to that knowing he was involved in getting her brother hooked on heroin, kicked off the force, and ultimately in a position of dying because of it...it's too much for any person to handle. I don't know how she kept it together today. Knowing her big brother was sent to kill her, how do you deal with that?" P.J. throws out in frustration while scrubbing his face.

Del doesn't know how to respond, nothing seems to be an adequate response. As he settles on a response, a soft voice responds "Because I have you P.J., that's how I manage. I know what it would be like to die because of this. I know you wouldn't live without me, and your dying is unacceptable to me. So I focus on the next steps, our future and not letting you help cook any meals that aren't cereal."

With the last comment, Del and Maggie start laughing immediately, while P.J. looks hurt for about 2 seconds before he joins the laughter. "How can I help Del? Maggie asks.

"Tonight's dinner is very simple, if you want to prepare a salad that would be great."

As they work, the 3 chat amicably getting to know each other.

--

'I can't believe it's been less than a day since everything went to pot. What do I do tomorrow, I'm down 3 officers with no notice. At least Jack will be back in a week or so, but I have no Detective and I have no Maggie.' Tom ruminates over these issues while sitting in his office when there's a knock on his door. 'Again?' he thinks. "Enter."

"Tom" Henry responds, closing the door behind him, even though there's no one in the office.

"Henry, thank God you're here. I am way over my head. What do we do?"

"I brought 3 trusted officers who can take your Detective and Constables position. Officially, they are on loan because Jack was shot and Maggie and P.J. had a car accident in Melbourne on their day off. I assume everyone knew they were dating? Who else in town knows what's happening?" Henry responds, settling into the chair opposite Tom.

"Maggie's father is a retired Sargeant, he knows most of it. Just no details on the explosion. Sargeant Ben Stewart is at the hospital with the injured and Inspector Faulkner who's at the site of the explosion. No one else knows anything about this hot mess."

"Ok, we keep it to the 4 of you and the 4 of us. AFP will take over the explosion investigation, my team should already be there, or at least very close. Call Faulkner and confirm Sam Richards will be assuming IC and leading the AFP investigation. He can return here and we can talk. Also call Mr. Doyle in. Ask him to come in torn up about a phone call from Melbourne. He's setting the stage for the car accident. Then my 3 agents can step in tomorrow." Tom nods along and reaches for the phone.

"Faulkner here"

"Sir, Tom here. I've heard from the AFP, Sam Richards will be leading the AFP investigation and taking over as IC. He should be there any time." As Tom finishes his sentence, he hears 4 car doors. He nods their arrival to Henry.

"Sir, your presence is requested immediately at the station." Tom then hangs up to make an even harder call.

Hearing the unspoken message, Ted confirms he's on route.

"Doyle here"

"Pat, it's Tom. I need you to come to the station so I can update you. But I need you to set the stage for why are missing couple will be absent for a few days. Wait until 6ou see Parrish coming back, follow her in asking to speak with me urgently. I need you to be in tears, or close to it. Maggie and P.J. decided to go to Melbourne for their day off. They have been in a bad accident while there. You and I know it's not the truth, but we need the scene to be set. Also, there is something else you need to know. Mick was injured in an explosion today. He was with the dirty coppers chasing Maggie. He's dirty Pat. We have proof. I'm sorry."

"Tom, I think I knew that already. Maggie tried to warn me before she left. I didn't want to believe her. I should have known better. I assume no visitors at this time and that the AFP are here already? Do you trust who they sent?"

"Pat, Henry Johnson came himself. The team with Maggie are his best. The leader is P.J.'s best friend, before Maggie of course. The second best are investigating here. I'll see you soon."

"Ta, Tom. Makes it better for sure. Be there soon."

--

"Gentlemen, how can I help you?"

"My name is Sam Richards, I believe you are expecting my team? We're from the AFP."

"Yes, I was just advised to expect you. Will you be sending someone to the hospital to relieve our Sargeant?"

"Yes sir, 2 of my team members are heading that way now. They can drop you off on the way."

"Perfect, thank you. I need this wrapped up cleanly, correctly and legally as quickly as possible gentlemen. Are we clear?"

"Crystal sir"

"Good, then let me update you with what we have so far. Unfortunately, none of it leaves our officers in a positive light." On that note, the 5 men start walking the scene trading information quietly. The group returns to the cars and get to their assigned tasks.

--

Exhausted from the day's events, Jo enters the station. She notices the boss's door is still shut tight. Sitting down in her chair, she hears the front door of the station open. She sees Pat Doyle stagger in.

'Oh God, he knows about Mick.' "Mr. Doyle, what can I do for you? Your daughter is off today."

Pat digs deep, using the fear and anger over the mess of his son's making. "I need to see Tom urgently, there's been an accident. It's Maggie and P.J."

'He doesn't know about Mick, his day is about to get worse." Jo sighs, and knocks on Tom's door.

'Show time!' thinks Tom "Enter"

"Boss, Pat Doyle is here, apparently there's been an accident," Jo says and gets out of the way, but stays close enough to listen in to the conversation. 'Hey, you don't shut the door, I'm going to listen.

“Tom, they've been in a car crash. They're both in hospital and will be there for several days. I'm heading to Melbourne in the morning. The nurse that called said it was Maggie and her husband in the accident, they eloped on me Tom. I didn't get to give her away. How could they?"

'Nicely done Pat. Perfect.' "Actually Pat, P.J.'s mom is dying and they went to Melbourne to see her. They didn't want to lie to her, so my priest married them this morning. Chris and I stood up with them. They plan on a church wedding once they have time to plan it."

"WHAT???? They included you and not me!"

"I'm sorry Pat, they were in a hurry to get out of town."

Pat realizes that Tom just told the whole truth, but it doesn't make anything easier to accept.

"Pat, there's something else. There was an explosion earlier today. I don't know if you know Henry Johnson from the AFP, he's here to update me. Ted Faulkner has been at the scene all day. I'm sorry Pat, Mick was injured in the explosion."

"Mr. Doyle, I'm sorry to meet under these conditions. You need to know, those injured today appear to be dirty cops chasing 2 Federally protected witnesses. Your son is under arrest at the hospital, and cannot have visitors. I will personally keep you updated on the investigation."

Jo can see Pat deflate at this news. 'Damn, he has had a bad day hasn't he' thinks Jo as she goes back to work.

--

Tom escorts Pat to the door. Once outside he confirms Pat's thoughts. "Everything I said was the truth Pat. Just not the reason. Maggie was scared they would succeed in killing one of them. She was going to be Mrs. Hashem if that happened. It would guarantee they stay together and can make decisions if need be. They are planning a church wedding for when they return."

Pat nods and head's back to Maggie's to make plans. He's heading to Melbourne tomorrow to keep up the cover story.

Tom goes back into the station and looks at Jo. "We have replacements coming in to help tomorrow. Your shift is over, go home. I'll see you tomorrow."

Not needing to be told twice, she packs up and gets out of there.

Not 5 minutes later, Inspector Faulkner comes through the front door and Ben comes through the back.

"Gentlemen, good timing. Let's meet in my office. The AFP rep heading the investigation is in my office waiting for us."

The 3 men turn and head into Tom's office. The newcomers gasp when they realize that Tom has called the Director of the AFP Witness Protection division to help. Neither man having realized that Tom had those connections. "Ted, Ben, this is Henry Johnson. Former Mount Thomas resident, and one of my best friends growing up. We've kept in contact over the years, but kept the friendship quiet, just in case this situation ever arose. Unfortunately, those fears have come true."

"Ted, Ben, it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm just sorry about the circumstances." Henry pauses, then goes on. "I have spoken with the team protecting our witnesses and the proof of corruption, they are safe in an undisclosed location. My team will remain with them for the duration. The head of that team will be meeting me tomorrow morning at the Federal Crown Prosecutor's office. We will provide a copy of the proof to their office. The original will remain in Maggie's possession. This keeps the chain of custody in place, and if there is a leak during the investigation we don't lose the proof. Now let's plan our next steps."

--

After a wonderful dinner, Jimmy starts the conversation about the next steps, "Ok, here's what happening next. Tomorrow morning, I'm meeting our boss at the Federal Crown Prosecutor's office. We will provide a copy of the proof to their office. The original will remain in Maggie's possession. This keeps the chain of custody in place, and if there is a leak during the investigation we don't lose the proof. We will have a better idea of the timing for the remaining arrests once that meeting is over. Everyone else will remain here. Any questions?"

Maggie leans into P.J. 's side, drawing strength from him. "I need to go with you tomorrow. Before you all freak out on me, hear me out. Your plan is good, but just providing them with the diskette won't be enough. They won't act on that alone. They need proof there is a witness. They have to talk to me. The sooner, the better. You all know that I am right."

Jimmy is prepared to argue with her when P.J. speaks up, "I know you're right Mags, but I don't like it. Us being in two places doesn't ever work. So be sure about this. You go, I go. They already know we're together, I'm as much of a target as you are. Are you sure?"

"Yes, it's the only way. I want this done quickly. We have a life to live, and 4 roommates, as nice as they are, are not part of that plan long-term."

Jimmy realizes he has no choice and reaches for the phone. Dialing his boss, he puts it on speakerphone and lays UT on the table.

"Johnson speaking"

"Boss, change of plans, you and I will have company on our trip. Better make it a high level visit. We're throwing all the marbles in the first volley." Jimmy says, waiting for the explosion.

“Whose stupid idea is that? One minute." they hear the Boss moving into another room with others, then the phone going to speaker. "I asked you a question, whose idea was that?"

“It was mine Sir. Your plan is good, but just providing them with the diskette won't be enough. They won't act on that alone. They need proof there is a witness that will talk. They have to talk to me. The sooner, the better. There is no other reasonable option Sir."

"Maggie, are you sure? What's your opinion on this P.J.?" asks Tom.

"Yes sir, I'm positive."

"Boss, there is no other option. Without Maggie there to confirm everything on the record, the Crown won't go forward. It's why these cases rarely succeed. I'm with Maggie, both now and every other day. I don't like it, she's my wife. Every part of me screams to grab her and run with just the two of us. But at the same time, my wife is a damn good cop who would kick my ass if I tried to do that, so it's not an option. We go to the Crown together."

"Alright, I see we aren't changing their minds on this. Jimmy, the meeting is with the Crown Prosecutor, not a deputy. Be ready for immediate and decisive action. Pat Doyle has been told everything. He has helped us set some protection for you. You have both been in a serious car accident after eloping to make your mother happy P.J. As a result he's traveling to Melbourne tomorrow to be there for you. You're both expected to be in hospital for several days." Johnson states. "Everyone get a good night's sleep, we meet at 8 a.m."

With that, the conversation ends and the call is disconnected. "We leave here at 7:30 then, it gets us there in plenty of time. Del, Mark you have first watch. We rotate every 4 hours. Sleep while you can. John, you will remain here tomorrow to secure the house. Call if it's not safe to return. The abort code will be 'where did your grandmother hide the tablecloth?' Does everyone understand?" on receiving 4 nods Jimmy continues, "Maggie, tomorrow you have to follow our instructions to the letter. First rule, unless you're running or entering a vehicle, you are glued to P.J.'s side. He is your buffer to everything. His instincts are some of the best I've seen. I have no doubt how good a team you are in the field, now it's time to prove it. Got it?"

"I hear you. Is there anything else? If not, I'm going to bed, except for one or two points, today has sucked. Good night boys." Maggie states, then turn and walks to her room.

P.J. sighs, "I'm sorry guys, she's not usually that abrupt. All this has shaken her faith in cops., and her family. It's going to take some time. Goodnight." P.J. then follows his wife, hoping to provide her comfort.

"That is one strong-willed woman. Way out of P.J.'s league. Let's get to it team." confirm Jimmy. With his statement, he confirms what they were all thinking. “Del, let's hit the hay. See you in 4 hours" is directed at Mark and Del.

"Mags, please talk to me. Please, what can I do?" pleads P.J., "how can I help?"

"Just hold me tight, then I know I'm safe." They move to the bed, laying down fully dressed, but in a tight embrace. Both are asleep within minutes, knowing tomorrow will change everything.

--

The alarms go off at 6:30, stirring the group. Jimmy bangs on the door to wake the couple, only to be met with Maggie exiting the room in full uniform and P.J. in a suit.

"Ta, mate. We're ready. Maggie wants to take care of brecki, then we can go."

They join the others in the kitchen. By 7:00, they are done eating and are sitting clock-watching. At 7:15, they rise as a group to head out. John goes first to check the cars and perimeter. Seeing nothing, he waves them to the truck, Maggie tucked safely in the middle and pulled tight into P.J. side. They all know this is the beginning of the final attack. If everything goes as planned, the game will end in checkmate.

Driving cautiously to the Crown offices, Jimmy notices a possible tail. “Get ready, we're 3 blocks away. Looks like they're making their move. There has to be a leak in the Prosecutor's office, it's the only option. Call the Boss, Del."

Pulling out the phone, he makes the call. "Boss, we have a tail. There's a leak."

"Dammit, go to location 3, I'll bring the Crown. Keep them safe boys," and Johnson hangs up, smacking his hand on the desk. "Michael, you have a leak, Who here knew about the meeting? Do they not understand?"

"Henry, calm down. I told 4 people, all of whom will be assisting with the investigation and prosecution."

"Are any not here or left early yesterday?"

Michael thinks about it, "Yes Harvey Pesson is off suddenly. He said his sister was in hospital, I agreed immediately, I didn't even question him."

"I'll get my team to double-check. In the meantime who needs to be at this meeting? My team is being followed, so they're detouring to an alternate location. We need to go now. Who's going with us? Grab them now, and their stuff."

Michael nods and grabs his secretary, she can double as the stenographer and his 2 deputies. "Grab your bags, we have a road trip. Michelle, you will be acting as the official recorder of our meeting. Bring your dictaphone and plenty of pads. I also need you to bring an evidence bag. We are leaving 5 minutes ago. Let's go."

The group of 4 joins Henry in the garage. He has eyes on 3 cars that appear empty. "Michelle, we need to take your car. Two of those cars are registered to Victoria CI, and the 3rd to the Drug squad. I don't believe they are all here on police business. I’m sure they've placed a tracker on my car, and we have to leave now. Please take a photo of all three plates, we may need it later."

His companions are surprised. 'What have we gotten into?' they think as they cross the garage to a blue ute.

"Perfect, I'm driving. Get in." Henry throws out grabbing her keys. The group piles in the car, and is out of the parking lot before the drivers of the CI cars return.

The elevator bings and 4 dirty cops come out and see Henry's truck hadn't moved. "Dammit they took another car. We've lost them." He pulls out his phone to call the others, hopefully they have had more luck.

At the same time, Jimmy is using his years of training to lose their tail. Seeing a multi-story garage on the left, he turns in at the last moment. Hearing tires squealing behind them, he knows his tail has taken the bait. Seeing a spot on the second level, Jimmy quickly parks and moves to the back of the spot. The 4 passengers quickly duck down and wait. They see the tailing cars drive past, trying to catch up. As they clear the line of sight, Jimmy throws the car into gear and pulls out of the garage.

Having reached the top floor, the driver of the first tail car realizes they have lost the target. "Dammit. We've lost them." He pulls out his phone to call the others, hopefully, they have had more luck.

3 blocks away, Jimmy pulls into the underground parking area of a nondescript office building. As they exit and enter the elevator, they see another car pulling in beside them to park. As the doors close, Jimmy and Henry's eyes meet in relief. Step 1 complete.

Arriving at the third floor. Jimmy leads the couple to a small office. "Wait here, just in case."

As the door closes behind them, Maggie is once again pulled into the safety of P.J.'s chest. "You ok Mags?"

"No, not in the least."

Leaving them with Del guarding the door, Jimmy and John go and wait for the elevator, with their guns drawn.

BING

The doors open and both groups breathe a sigh of relief.

"Hey Boss. How did they find us so fast? We picked up our tail6 blocks from the building."

"I need John to check on a deputy prosecutor Harvey Pesson. Confirm if he has a sister in the hospital, and the reason for her admission if she is there. I'm hoping he isn't dirty, just threatened. Where's our guests?"

"Secured until we're ready for them." Jimmy responds, while John boots up the computer to start his search.

Jimmy leads the group to a conference room. In the corner is professional recording equipment, including a video camera. "We aren't taking any chances, everything will be recorded. A copy will go with you, along with the other proof. A second copy will remain with the witnesses, just in case."

The team from the Crown Prosecutor's office is impressed. "Where are we Henry? This office would be perfect for interviewing reluctant witnesses."

"Not happening Michael. This is for WPP purposes only. We use it sparingly when a witness has been compromised and we need to get their testimony on tape. Like today!" Henry fumes.

"Boss. Pesson has a sister. She was attacked yesterday morning on the way to school. She's in Year 11. It's bad. The file notes indicate both legs were broken and she was stabbed in the stomach. Boss, the police notes indicate no witnesses or leads, but the investigating officer is on the diskette. She may have permanent scars. These guys are bastards. We have to move quickly before this happens again." John shares with the team.

Everyone is shocked by the news. Also comforted by the extinguishing circumstances that made Harvey talk. "We get through everything today. Del, take Mark and go bring Judge Swanson here now. We need warrants to get charges laid immediately. She can do that. There are 10 bedrooms on the next floor. We all stay tonight. No discussion. We know there's the 7 injured in Mount Thomas, and at least another 8 involved today. Plus the 12 dead. This stops today. Get set up. Jimmy, go get them." Henry orders.

"Yes, Boss" echoes as his men move.

"Michael, before you argue hear the witnesses out. See the proof. If you disagree then, I won't fight you." Henry states as he collapses into a chair. 'I'm too old for this. Time to start my retirement plans. That farm near Tom is looking better every day.'

--

"Mark, you're with Del. Take a clean car. He'll fill you in. Go now, time's of the essence" Jimmy states walking up to the room holding Maggie and P.J.

Mark nods and walks back to the elevator. Jimmy pauses before opening the door. 'How did time get so bad?' he thinks. Then shakes his head, not the time for those thoughts. Reaching up he opens the door, looking in he says "seriously you two, time and place."

P.J. wipes off the lipstick and straightens his hair and clothes, while Maggie does the same." Mate, we're newlyweds why would you expect anything different?"

Jimmy can't even argue with them. Nodding they head to the conference room. Maggie doing as she was told, holding tightly onto P.J. "Let's do this, you ready?"

"No, but I'll do it anyway." Maggie replies.

With that, they enter the conference room appearing far more confident than they feel."Sr. Detective Patrick John Hashem and Sr. Constable Maggie Hashem, it's a pleasure to finally meet in person. My name is Henry Johnson, I'm Jimmy's immediate supervisor. Before I introduce the others, I want to say 2 things to you. First, congratulations on your wedding, I wish you many years together. Second, thank you for doing this. We understand the risks to you both. It takes strong people to do what you're doing. Ready?"

Maggie and P.J. lock eyes and have another silent conversation. They nod. "Yes, sir. We're ready. We have one condition. We don't leave each other's side at any time. Our evidence does not overlap until we called Jimmy. If you can accept that, we can start." P.J. replies.

"No problem, let's take our seats and start. Michael, your show now. Jimmy and I will be in the room, off camera by the door manning the equipment. You can identify us as such on the tapes."Michael nods. Jimmy starts the recording devices and moves beside his boss. Michelle also starts the dictaphone and has her pen at the ready in her steno pad."

This interview is starting at 8:30 am in Melbourne. Present are Federal Crown Prosecutor Michael Sears, Deputy Crown Prosecutor Lee Smith, Executive Assistant to Michael Sears Michelle Fox, Director Henry Johnson, Agent Jimmy Nichols, Sr. Detective Patrick John Hashem, and Sr. Constable Maggie Hashem. We are here to receive testimony on corruption in the Victoria Police force. Sr. Constable Hashem, please proceed. We will interrupt with questions as you go through the information."

"My name is Senior Constable Maggie Hashem. I have in my possession a diskette containing proof of all the Victoria Police officers who are involved in mass corruption. The proof on the disk was gathered by Detective Barry Craig, and before his arrest, he arranged for a copy of this to be sent to the Federal Crown Prosecutor if anything happened to him. I don't know if it has arrived yet. The other day, Barry reached out through his lawyer and asked me to visit him in St. David's. He asked his lawyer to leave and then quietly told me about the proof. He also told me to be overly cautious, he had an additional copy made because he didn't trust his lawyer. Barry told me where he hid the extra copy and asked me to retrieve it. He asked me to get it to someone that could act rapidly."

Maggie paused and lifted her eyes to P.J., gathering strength to get through the worst of the story, again. "On the way back from the jail, I stopped and retrieved the diskette. Barry also warned me that the cops involved would know I went to see him because of his lawyer. Mick, showed up just before we called Jimmy to try and convince me to break my engagement with P.J. and run to WPP with him."

P.J. picked up the story at that point, "My name is Sr. Detective Patrick John Hashem, I'm often referred to as P.J. Once Mick made his suggestion, Maggie tore a strip off him for suggesting she leave me behind. We then moved to our bedroom to discuss our options. Maggie told me about the diskette and the warning Barry gave her about Mick. We decided that WPP was the right answer, but not with Mick. I grew up with Jimmy and knew he was working with WPP. So Maggie told me to call him. We decided to wait at the station with our Boss Tom Croydon. While driving from the house, we explained everything to Tom, we asked for his help to get another friend and his priest to the station before we left. We weren't going into this apart."

"Once we were married, Jimmy called to confirm where we'd meet and another Sargeant from our station Ben Stewart, drove us to the hand-off. We left for a protected location to gather our bearings. As we arrived, the mobile rang. Ben called to advise us that he'd seen a group of cars high-tailing it out of town. We decided to search everything for a tracking device. We found 2, one in Maggie's purse and the second in the hem of my jacket. We jumped back in the car and left the property via the back exit. From that point, we are unaware of anything that happened except through phone calls and third-hand information." Maggie wrapped up the story.

She reaches into her purse. "Here is a copy of the proof. I have the original secured, just in case." Maggie then finishes what she started by handing the diskette to the Crown Prosecutor.

"Thank you Sr. Constable Hashem. Sr. Detective Hashem, we understand this hasn't been easy for you. I think Lee and I have some additional questions. Let's go back to the start" and with that hours of back and forth filled in the gaps. They prepared the arrest warrants for everyone on the disk, and Judge Swanson signed off on all the search warrants for their homes and computers.

After an exhausting day, P.J. escorts Maggie to a bedroom on the next floor with Jimmy. "Jimmy, what happens next?"

Jimmy sighs not wanting to have to tell them. "It's about to get even more dangerous for you both. Tom, Ben, and your dad should be fine. We've buried their knowledge and they will not be called away witnesses. As soon as the Crown is satisfied nothing has been missed, you're going to be moved. Only 5 people will know where and 4 of us will be with you. I expect that to occur by mid-day tomorrow at the latest. Starting in about 15 minutes, the arrests will be made. We are grabbing as many as we can simultaneously to limit exposure. Unfortunately, there are 3 very highly-ranked officers on the list. We doubt they will go quietly. There are also a couple of AFP members that will be arrested by their peers. When they are booked, the media will get wind of this. I want us gone before that happens. That's why the arrests are happening tonight. It will delay the media finding out. We will know more when we see how many, if any, we miss snatching. Go to bed. We have you covered, depending on the next few hours, we could be leaving earlier than expected." With that, he closes the bedroom door and leaves Del standing across the hall giving them the illusion of privacy.

--

As Jimmy closes the door Maggie starts to collapse, causing P.J. to rush forward to catch her. "It'll be OK Mags, I've got you."

P.J. drops to his butt against the wall, pulling Maggie onto his lap. He holds her while she sobs.

In the hall, Del can hear her wailing. 'Damn, how did she hold all that in.'

Some time later, she lifts her head. "Thank you. I love you, but I'm sorry I dragged you into this."

"There was no other way it was going down sweetheart. You and me, and our 4 extra shadows, against the world. Let's get you out of this uniform and into the sweats John brought us. But I'm checking the hems and pockets first, just in case."

Out in the hall, Del suddenly hears a blast of laughter 'I don't want to know, but it's better to hear than the tears.'

--

Overnight throughout Victoria arrests are made, for the most part peacefully. Whether they think the 4 prosecutors and 2 judges that have been on their payroll will be able to help them, or they are just unaware of how big a net was cast, or just plain hubris, the team can't figure out. By midday, news stations are breaking in on daytime TV shows and reporting that 55 Victoria Police officers, 3 AFP officers, 4 prosecutors, and 2 judges have been arrested in the biggest police corruption case in Australian history.

All the arrestees are placed in solitary confinement, for their safety. Every station is affected by the arrests, except for one...Mount Thomas. While they are missing bodies, there is no corruption found. The town breathes a collective sigh of relief, and steps up to support their coppers. Amazingly, Mount Thomas sees a decrease in crime for several months. The only things missing through this time are Maggie and P.J., and no one knows what happened after the car accident. Pat hasn't been back in town, but someone is taking care of their houses.

Tom gets the occasional message from Henry confirming they are safe, and as happy as they can be under the circumstances. He only mentions these calls to Ben and Ted when there's no one else around.

Ten months after the arrests, 2 weeks after the last of the trials wrap up, and 1 week after all of the accused are convicted and sentenced to life in prison due to the number of charges, a long-awaited phone call is made "Jimmy, it's clear. Bring them home"

"Actually Boss, they'll be delayed a bit." Jimmy gladly responds.

"What's wrong, we got them all. The threats are gone. Why aren't you coming back?"

"Well, you see Boss, when a man and woman fall in love, and you send them to an isolated ranch with a beach and nothing else, they make their own entertainment," Jimmy says while smiling at the family of four snuggling on Maggie's hospital bed.

"We need to wait for the doctor to approve travel on a plane. We might consider a boat instead, we will see. The entertainment is only 6 hours old." Jimmy says. "Do you think we can get them moved into a 4-bedroom place before bringing them home? The team has also asked to be based out of Mount Thomas going forward, we like what we've heard. They sound like our kind of cops and citizens."

"To be honest Jimmy, I'm retiring and was hoping you'd take over my job." Henry replies. "I agree with your description of Mount Thomas. Actually, I bought some property out there. Trish is already there, just waiting on the wrap-up from this case to be completed."

"Congratulations sir. It's a well-earned retirement, but I think Mark or Del would be a better fit to step in for you. I'm godfather and I want be there."

"Are you telling me what they had, Trish can find a place, shop and decorate."

"Excuse me, Mrs. Johnson. I have someone on the phone for you." Jimmy reaches out to take one of the bundles from her and hands her the phone instead. "It's my Boss" Jimmy mouths.

"Hi Henry, it's been so long. Thank you for calling. I know Jimmy and the boys miss you."

"Very smooth Maggie. I called to give the okay to come home, but I understand my timing is off a bit. I hear congratulations are in order, but Jimmy was being very coy. Will you please share the details? "

Maggie laughs, sounding freer that any time in almost a year. "Coy was he. You should have seen all 4 of the faint when I went into labour at the ranch. P.J. actually took care of catching. Patrick James was born at 3:25 pm, 8.5 pounds and 21 inches long. Margaret Helena was born at 3:25 pm, 8 pounds and 20 inches long. Father and uncles are all recovering nicely." She gets a stink eye from the other adults in the room, and notices all 4 uncles are here. "I'm putting you on speakerphone, so you can share your news too."

Del reaches up and shuts the door, just in case.

"Gentlemen, I want to congratulate you on a job well done. That you were not only able to get them in to testify safely, more than once, but you were also able to hide a twin pregnancy from everyone at the same time, is almost unbelievable. You will be receiving commendations for this. I have Jimmy's request for relocation for your team and will meet you in Mount Thomas to discuss it further. Talk to the doctor and let me know timing. Maggie, P.J., congratulations again. You have permission to call your parents. Do you want to call Tom or do we want to surprise him too?"

The new parents share a look, "I'll call the Boss Henry, we don't want him having a heart attack when the 4 of us show up. What happened to our houses?" P.J. replies.

"We kept them in good shape and cleared your mortgages for you. If you would like, I can arrange the sale of both and find you a new home - 4 or 5 bedrooms I'd think? So the grandparents can visit to make up for the past year?

"Thank you Henry, that would be wonderful," sniffles Maggie. Wisely the men don't comment. They learned some hard lessons during her pregnancy that they won't forget any time soon.

A knock is heard over the phone and the doctor enters. "Mrs. Johnson, you are free to go home tomorrow morning with Dad. All 3 of you are doing very well. Gentlemen, the scans show low-grade concussions for all 4 of you. Please be careful, and if you ever have children I would recommend you stay out of the delivery room."

"Thank you Docter Peterman, if I can ask, what are the rules or recommendations about flying with newborns? We'd be flying to Melbourne."

"I would wait for one week if you can. If you have to fly tomorrow you can, but a few days to find your feet would be better."
Thank you, for everything."

"Hey, I only did clean up. Dad did the catching." With that the doctor leaves the room and closes the door.

A forgotten voice comes through the speaker. "Ok, take a week to wrap everything up there. I will meet at the airport on Sunday myself, I'll call Jimmy with your flight details," and the call disconnects without anything further being said.

"You know he just wants to see the babies first, right?" says John, as the whole group starts laughing.

--

The following Sunday, Henry is waiting in the arrivals area with two special guests.

"The plane is showing as arrived, but they'll be the last ones off I suspect."

"You're sure they're OK?" Pat asks. He's missed the couple horribly and looks like he's aged a decade. Mick being convicted hit him hard, especially when the charges of the attempted murder of his sister were read out.

"Pat, trust me. Tom don't you start!"

"There's Jimmy!" Tom calls out noticing the group entering the area. Both Maggie and P.J. area carrying a covered bundle, while the others have the carry-on bags. The flight attendant goes over and points at something out of sight, causing Del to break off from the group heading in that direction.

"Maggie. P.J." Pat xalls out.

Both head's turn and huge smiles cross their faces. With a quick question and nod on response from Jimmy, they both run, carefully, to him. As they get in arms reach, the stop. "Dad, there's someone we want you to meet. This past Saturday, Patrick James was born at 3:25 pm, 8.5 pounds and 21 inches long. Margaret Helena was born at 3:25 pm, 8 pounds and 20 inches long. Hi Grandpa." Both blankets are pulled back to introduce the twins.

Pat can't believe it. "Princess, they're gorgeous. Congratulations. May I?"

"Of course," Maggie replies handing over little Patrick. She then turns and hugs Tom, "Hi Boss" is quietly mentioned through her tears.

"Welcome home you 4. What a blessing to return with. May I hold your daughter?" With a nod, P.J. reluctantly hands her over.

"They are your spitting images!" Tom says.

Del joins them with a double stroller and responds to the unasked question "yep, they match personalities too!"

The large group collects the suitcases and make their way out of the terminal. 2 large SUVs sitting are waiting for them. "P.J., I have been to see your mom each week, the cancer has progressed, but she has held on for you. She needs to be your first stop." Tom says heading to one of the driver's seats. "Get in, the one has infant seats already installed. We'll see you there or back in Mount Thomas?"

"I'll debrief these four and then we'll meet you in Mount Thomas later today." Henry replies.

At that moment Maggie realizes she'll be without her 4 extra shadows, and she starts to cry. Having put the kids in the car P.J. puts his arm around her, "it's just a few hours. We'll catch up with mom, dad, and Tom. We'll see the in Mount Thomas tonight. ok?"

Maggie nods slowly, you promise you'll be there tonight?"

Four simultaneous "Yes ma'am's" are heard. With a small smile, Maggie climbs into the 2nd row of seats beside Patrick, P.J. climbs in behind her beside Margaret, and Pat gets into the passenger seat. With a wave, they pull out.

The 4 men released from duty for the first time in 10 months seem to be at a loss without their charges. "It'll get easier boys. Get in. We'll go to the office, run a quick debrief - shouldn't be longer than an hour, and we'll head to Mount Thomas." Henry says as they get in and head to the office.

"I had your cars brought to the garage, so you can drive yourselves out there. There is a piece of paper with an address in your car. I was able to get 5 houses together in a cul-de-sac. I didn't think you'd all want to be too far apart for a while. I had your possessions moved in and Trish did some shopping and decorating for you. Your fridges are stocked, as are your bars. As you can see, your relocation requests have been approved. I'm officially retired after this debrief, so you'll be seeing me around Mount Thomas all the time. You are being placed on 6 months of mandatory leave, in recognition of no time off on this assignment. Take the time to think, talk as a team, figure out what you want to do next." At that, he pulls into the garage and parks next to Jimmy's car. Here's your keys. Move your bags and we'll head up to 10. Ok, debrief done!"

Shocked speechless, the four men follow his instructions and they head to the elevator. When arrives on the 10th floor and the doors open, a massive cheer runs across the floor. All of their local teams are there to congratulate them on their part in the case and welcome them home.

--

Pulling into a care home parking lot, Tom explains "I think she's held on to see you two again. Take the kids, here's a camera. We'll head to the coffee shop and wait. You have as long as you need. She's in Room 8."

The doors open and they each grab an infant carrier and head in to reunite with Helena. Arriving at Room 8, P.J. knocks on the frame of the open door. "Come in," comes a soft voice.

Grabbing Maggie's free hand, P.J. leads them in, "Momma?"

"PATRICK, you better have that beautiful woman with you."

They come around the edge of the curtain and Helena sees the carriers, "You brought me grandbabies." As she starts crying.

"Hi mom," says Maggie. "We want you to meet Patrick James was born at 3:25 pm, 8.5 pounds and 21 inches long, and Margaret Helena was born at 3:25 pm, 8 pounds and 20 inches long. They're 8 days old today," as she hand Margaret to Helena after giving her a hug.

P.J. lifts young Patrick into his arms and head's over to his mother's side. "Hi momma. Have you also met my wife? We got married a few days before they hid us away. We wanted to wait and have the big church wedding when you could attend. Please come home with us, mom. We have a room for you, let us spend your remaining time together. Get to know your grandchildren."

Helena looks at the little ones, they remind her of P.J. as a baby. "I will come, got get Tom and Pat. We will plan." P.J. leaves the baby with Maggie and moves to the coffee shop to grab the others.

Helena looks at Maggie. "He has never been happier. Thank you. Are you sure you want your mother-in-law to live with you? I sleep heavily much of the time. They say I have hung on through sheer will alone. I needed to see you both again."

"We talked about this before we came back. My mom died years ago, also from cancer. I missed so many things with Hey, we aren't doing that again. We want you with us, for as long as you have, even if it's years."

"Ok. Now tell me, how was my Patrick during your labor? And you keep calling me mom, daughter. "

They both tear up in joy. "Our Patrick was wonderful and supportive. He delivered them both. My waters broke and I went into labor unexpectedly. Our house was over 2 hours out into the country. My first contraction was after my waters broke, from the first to little Patrick's arrival was only 45 minutes. Our 4 protective shadows all fainted and ended up with concussions. You would have been proud of him. I certainly am."

The men return as Maggie finishes her story. "It takes a strong man to not only see his wife in pain and not be able to help her, but to then help her remain calm and deliver the children. I am very proud of you Patrick. I will laugh at your shadows when we meet."

"Hi Helena," says Tom, giving her a kiss on her cheek. We figured out the logistics of moving you and got your doctors OK to go today. I'm going to take Pat to get his truck. We'll load all the luggage with him. You'll ride in the front seat with me. They can sit in the back with their kids. Since you're coming with us, we can leave when you're ready."

Small sounds are coming from the children., "I need to feed them before we go, do you mind if I do that here mom?"

"I'm honoured. Patrick, get the nurse to help me dress, you pack my things."

Everyone immediately moves to follow her orders.

45 minutes later, the cars are packed with things and people and the ride to Mount Thomas begins.

--

"We'll go right to your new house, You have 4 neighbours on your street, all of them are also moving in today. You also know them well. I suspect they will arrive first. No one else knows you're coming home, or even that you've been in WPP. Your reintroduction to Mount Thomas will be done on your terms." Tom supplies.

"Ta, Tom. We appreciate that. We have an idea of what to do. We had time to plan everything for our wedding. Since neither of us are returning to work right now, we thought we'd have invitations sent to show up at the church on Saturday. We'll leave the names of the bride and groom off the invitations. We expect the people we want there will show up out of curiosity alone. We would like you to call Chris over tonight, Maggie needs to see her. id like you to stand-up for me again. This time Jimmy will be beside you, where he belongs. Maggie is going to break tradition and have Del stand up with her and Chris. Maybe you can drop the invitations on Jack, Jo, and Ben's desks."

"What fun, I'll do the drop off when they aren't around. I'm honoured to stand-up with again." looking in the mirror, Tom says "your wife is asleep, can you adjust her head? There's a neck pillow in the seat back.

P.J. chuckles, "she's so excited to be home, but she's exhausted. Being with our things at home, without 4 male roommates but instead with mom and Pat is going to do so much for her mindset. That said, I'm glad the boys will be close. She's become very attached to her new, true brothers. She's already calling them uncles, even decided that Jimmy and Mark are little Patrick's godfathers, whole Del and John are Margaret's. She wants to ask Chris to be godmother to both. After this long together day in and day out, them separating from us today"

Tom smiles, "I did notice the promise she demanded. I guess she'll approve of your neighbour's then?"

They continue chatting quietly, while the women and children sleep.

--

Just outside Mount Thomas, a police car comes up behind them with lights and sirens. Tom quickly pulls over and gets out. Turning to face the cop, he sees it"s Ben. Leaning in the window he says, "do you want to see Ben now?" over the screaming infants.

P.J. looks over at a now awake Maggie, "It's up to you love. Do you want to say hi?"

With a small smile, she nods yes. "Ok, Tom the boss says yes."

Tom nods and waits for Ben binder the back door. "What is wrong Sargeant? "

"Boss, there's been moving vans at that new cul-de-sac, it's got people on the next street worried. There were no For Sale signs and they're worried about squatters. Also, I drove by P.J.'s place this morning and it's empty. There's a For Sale sign on the lawn, same with Maggie's place. Are they gone for good? Did something happen? We're they found?"

"Ben, breathe. I know the new residents, they're all moving in today. Nothing bad happened in WPP, they were not found. They asked for the houses to be sold. As for the rest, he opens the back door, while the door on the other side is shut.

Ben is shocked, there she is, and in her arms is a little blue bundle. Hearing footsteps behind him, Ben spins to see P.J. holding a pink bundle. "Hey mate, good to see you," P.J. says reaching out for a handshake. Ben still speechless, follows suit.

"Hi Ben" comes from the road behind him and he spins again, "Maggie, P.J., you're home? For good? Thank God," As he reaches towards Maggie for a gentle hug. "and you've multiplied. Congratulations, little Patrick and Margaret I assume?

"Thanks man, they're only a week only, so no one had missed much yet." P.J. supplies. "I'm sorry though, we have to get them home, it's almost snack time and we have mom in the car. I'd invite you over tonight, but I don't know our address."

"No problem man. Welcome home. They on the cul-de-sac Tom?"

Tom nods his confirmation as they all climb back into the car.

"Please stop by after 7 tonight, we want to catch up. Chris is invited too, but please don't say anything to anyone else. We need a few days first" says Maggie.

Ben nods and returns to his car with a bit of a pep in his step. They're home.

Fifteen minutes later, Tom turns onto a new residential area containing 5 houses. The middle one is slightly larger that the others, and that is the one Tom heads for. Pulling into the driveway, Tom turns and says "Welcome Home."

Maggie exits the car and notices her dad's car is already in the driveway. She turns and sees there are cars in the other driveways as well. Reaching in to grab little Patrick, Maggie waits for P.J. to join her. Grabbing his hand, Maggie looks up, "together?"

"Together."

They start walking towards the front door when it opens and she sees her dad standing there. 'It's really over, we're home' she thinks. Her smile widens "Hi Dad, we're home." She turns to Tom, "where are the others? is it far?"

As she finishes her question, the 4 front doors open. She spins and sees John and Del to her left and Jimmy and Mark to her right. That makes everything perfect. 'Hi Boys. We're home! You coming for dinner?"

Everything is perfect.

Later that night, Chris and Ben have joined that gathering. Maggie stands in the doorway to the living room basking in her families presence when P.J. comes up behind her and wraps his arms around her. "Mom and the babies are sleeping. I know you want visit, but we have all the time in the world now. You need sleep. Say goodnight and head upstairs. Please?"

Maggie nods and goes to say goodnight to everyone. She's asleep almost before her head hits the pillow her last thought was that she was grateful for the second chance.
