"No, Ei, the strap needs to be tighter," Katsuki said, a scowl deeply creasing his forehead. The alpha just frowned at Katsuki - well, maybe it was more of a pout - as he attempted to pull the carseat strap impossibly tighter. The straps were fine, deep down the omega knew they were, but he still needed to be sure. Fuck, Yua was only two days old and Katsuki was already worried as hell about every single thing that could possibly happen to her.
It was as if all of the perils of being heroes, with all of the innumerable dangers and risks to their safety, were dimmed compared to the instant and overwhelming fear that came along with being a parent. And it wasn't as if it had just started when the little girl was born, either. As soon as Katsuki took the multitude of positive pregnancy tests all those months ago, he became hyper-vigilant about everything imaginable.
How could he not? They'd tried so hard for so long to get pregnant, he wasn't going to do anything to fuck it up. He was the perfect pregnant omega, taking up yoga, making sure his already regimented sleep schedule remained as such, and fine-tuning his healthy eating habits even more, even introducing 'Meatless Monday' much to Eijiro's dismay.
And sex? Off. The. Table.
Eijiro had never pouted so much in his life.
The pregnancy was picture perfect. At every ultrasound, the baby measured just as she should - yes, she, they found out about halfway through. Katsuki, ever the over-planner, won that argument, though seeing how beautiful the blond looked in a pale blue maternity shirt that day, Eijiro didn't put up too much of a fight. Katsuki had said something about 'it's gonna be a boy, Ei, and he's gonna be strong as hell and be the number one hero just like I will be'.
Wrong. Even the blue shirt and 'boy vibes' lost out, and the ultrasound tech announced it was a girl. Katsuki beamed, heart growing impossibly bigger, and it didn't even matter that he'd hoped for a little boy. Eijiro and Katsuki's eyes met, both tear-glistened, and with a soft smile the redhead kissed his mate's forehead.
Katsuki fell even more in love that day, his mind instantly transitioning to soft little pink dresses and picking flowers. Then getting calls from the school that his daughter beat up a boy for saying she couldn't do something just because she was a girl. He smirked at himself, because he knew genders, or secondary genders for that matter, meant nothing in the realm of potential success. Their daughter was going to be a badass no matter her gender, primary or secondary.
Hell, look at him. An omega in the top ten hero ranks? Unheard of in days past. The country was progressing, albeit slowly, and Katsuki wondered what it would look like when their little girl was growing up.
Now, getting ready to take Yua home from the hospital, it was almost surreal. They'd given up hope of ever being able to conceive and thanks to all the gods above they were buckling their perfect little girl into her carseat, covered by a soft pastel blanket. She didn't mind, already snoozing with her little pink tongue poking out from between her lips every so often. It reminded Katsuki of Eijiro when he was trying to study or focusing on reading a report.
Eijiro snapped another picture on his phone, adding it to the hundreds he'd already taken in the last two days. Some of them were too intimate to share, those of Yua directly after being born, but their group chat with the BakuSquad was chock full of the Katsuki-approved snapshots, and the amounts of "Awwww" responses and heart emojis that follow every one was astronomical.
The Squad was just as in love with her as her parents. They were pack after all, always had been, always would be.
"M'surprised Mina didn't come again today," Katsuki said, zipping his overnight bag closed. He was sore as fuck, and for once he was happy to let Eijiro do most of the work for him, and that would include carrying the baby carrier and his bag when they left. His alpha was proud as fuck, chest puffed out as far as it could and a new-father grin spreading across his face. He'd looked that way for the last two days straight.
It was adorable.
"They're probably all already at the apartment waiting for us," Eijiro said with a chuckle, tucking the little blanket around Yua gently before running his thumb over her cheek.
The redhead stepped over to the bed and slipped his arms around his mate, scenting him with comfort and love. Katsuki practically melted into his hug, his chest rumbling with a quiet purr.
How did he get so lucky?
~~~
Once back home, Katsuki desperately wanted his nest. Two too many days in the hospital made him anxious and homesick, so they brought Yua into the nest with them, letting their mixed scents envelop their family. Warm sugary caramel mixed with petrichor and summer days, and it smelled like home.
Mate. Love. Family.
Where there were two, now there were three, and their love grew exponentially to accommodate the new addition.
"Welcome home, baby," Eijiro said, kissing both his mate and his daughter after crawling into the nest with them.
As Katsuki and Yua napped, Eijiro watched over them, as an alpha, a mate, and a father, scenting them both with love and peace and protection.
It wasn't until a couple of hours later that a knock at the door awakened the blond, and while he made to get out of the nest to answer, Eijiro put his hand on his shoulder.
"I got it, babe," he said with a kiss to his cheek. But he was awake now, and didn't want to fuck up his sleep schedule too much, so when Yua woke just a few moments later hearing the voice from the genkan, Katsuki changed her and brought her out to the living room with him to see who was there.
"Ahh there he is." Mitsuki grinned at him, eyes dropping to the little bundle in his arms. Yua was awake, a rare occurrence in the last couple of days. She was a good sleeper, and even when awake she wasn't fussy and didn't cry a lot. "Hey, brat," she added onto the end, cupping his cheeks and kissing his forehead.
"Hag," the blond responded, but the grin on his face gave him away. He and his mother, while still crass to each other out of pure habit, had come a long way in their relationship. It wasn't until Katsuki had told her he was pregnant that she admitted that she and Masaru had also had trouble conceiving, not having him until they were older than most of their peers. Somehow, that brought the two of them even closer together. Sometimes common struggles have a way of doing that, he guessed.
With a smile, Eijiro excused himself to go make Yua a bottle since it wouldn't be long before she needed to eat.
"C'mon hag, you can hold her," Katsuki said as he led them to the living room. It wasn't until then that he noticed the large gift bag in her hand. "Oi, you didn't need to fucking bring anything."
"Shut up, brat, it's for my first grand baby," she said, setting the bag down next to the chair so she could take Yua into her arms.
Mitsuki cradled the little girl like the precious bundle she was. Their eyes connected and older alpha smiled, scenting the baby with her own grandmotherly smell. Seeing his mother looking down at his daughter made his eyes burn and he wiped them with the back of his hand just like he had the day he read the positive tests.
Damn allergies.
Without looking up at Katsuki, she nodded her head to the bag.
"Open it," she said, rocking Yua gently side to side. He didn't want to move, honestly. Watching the two of them bond seemed infinitely more important than what was probably a bag full of cute baby clothes or stuffed animals.
But inevitably, he was curious, so he pulled the bag toward him, resting it between his calves as he pulled out the tissue paper that covered the gift. Stifling a yawn, he peeked inside and paused. What the-
Pulling out the large blanket, he was in awe.
"Ei, c'mere and help me," he called into the kitchen and the redhead appeared only seconds later, handing the bottle to Mitsuki and draping a burp rag over her shoulder.
"What's this?" he asked, grabbing the corner of the blanket that Katsuki handed him and the two men pulled it open all the way.
It was a memory quilt. Black, red, and orange borders highlighted many pictures, some of Eijiro and Katsuki as babies, the two together at UA, with their friends, at their wedding. Yua's name was embroidered onto a section that had one of Katsuki at the baby shower and one with Eijiro's hand on Katsuki's baby belly. But within that area there were also blank spots. Squares that had a border but no picture, and Katsuki grazed his finger over one of them. "Why're some of them empty?"
The blond woman looked up at them. "Those are for Yua. Once you have some pictures of her and your family, I'll add them to the quilt."
Katsuki was stunned speechless. He hadn't expected this from his mother, but he couldn't think of a more perfect gift for Yua. It encompassed every part of their lives together, but still gave room for them to add to it as she grew up.
As would be expected, Eijiro was crying, fat tears rolling down his cheeks, but it was Katsuki who pulled his alpha into a hug this time, the blanket pressed between them.
For never wanting a family when he was young, he wasn't sure how he could live without one now.
